i Mark. You’re playing A Day On the Green, which is a much loved festival. Why do you like playing them, and why do you think the brand is so successful?

Well, I think the formula of finding great locations is a recipe for success; they’re pretty careful about the acts they put together ...

I’ve never seen one that I thought was a jumbo gumbo line up. The combination of well curated bills and the location just make it a really good experience and as an artist, it always feel really good driving up and turning up to work at those places. I can only wonder why people haven’t in the past, with all the wineries that have always existed - and noone has really thought of doing it.

It’s been 30 years sine you started Johnny Diesel and the Injectors in Perth. If you could talk to that young guy back then, what advice would you give him …

Yeah, 30 years this year since we kicked off what we were basically doing as a hobby at that point. It was a hobby band, because we all came from other bands. I’d tell him to hang in there - something’s coming down the pipe …

Take us back to 1986; what were you playing for, and what was your goal?

I’d been in another band with the guys I was playing with at the time; it was called the

Americana the tour is going well, and the album has been a success. Are you going to be doing any new writing any time soon, or sticking with this one for now?

I’ll probably tour this one for a while. I haven’t been to Tasmania or Alice Springs, North Queensland, places like that, which I generally try to ... well, not Tasmania, but I keep those northern ones for the winter.

Tasmania is always cold, no matter what time of the year you go down there!

I am starting to work on a new record, which I had actually already started to do before I did Americana. It kind of went out the window when the idea of Americana came to me from my agent, whom I’ve been with for 28 years - it’s pretty amazing.

LAND NEW ENG THE NEW ENGLAND LACE MAKERS AS A GROUP OF LIKE-MINDED PEOPLE BEGAN MEETING IN 1983. MANY OF THESE HAD BEGUN LEARNING LACE MAKING FROM ALMA PEARSON IN ARMIDALE, OR FROM VISITING TUTORS.

orma O’Keefe, Judith Falle and Jessie Russell taught classes at TAFE and elsewhere for the next 10 years. The New England Lace Group was formed in 1985, to prepare for a highly successful Country Lace Weekend held in April 1986 at UNE. From then on, many other activities and workshops were organised, with Bobbin and Needle Lace being included.

Grants were secured from the Craft Council to subsidise workshops and to help promote the activities of the group. Over the years the group has waxed and waned, but has always provided tutors for beginners and the old hands, with the NELG becoming a vibrant, enthusiastic body.

Since early in 2003, many overseas tutors have visited and conducted workshops in Uralla, and more recently at the newly named Lace Resource Centre at the Go Create studio at Kentucky.

Membership includes interstate lacemakers.

Some are new to bobbin lace making, or have returned to the art after a break of some years.

ancient art. With this in mind, members of NEL have taught lacemaking to Year 12 Textile and Design students, demonstrated at events and held exhibitions locally and overseas.

OUR AIMS ARE: • to promote lace making as an art and a leisure activity throughout the New England region; • to bring together people interested in all forms of lace and lace making; • to provide a forum for the exchange of information on lace and lace making; • to provide opportunities for personal and public education in lace and lace making; • to maintain a library of books, magazines and resource materials.

Our latest project has hit the streets of Uralla with a Lace Chase. The goal is to promote the great variety of lace styles and to educate people in the fascinating history of lace making over 700 years. Visitors to the town and locals will

be issued a challenge to find framed handmade lace worked by NELG members that have been placed discreetly in shops and businesses. The lace history includes information regarding Uralla’s long association with its Brass and Iron Lace Foundry and the iron lace seen on buildings in Uralla and Armidale.

This is an ongoing project, with many more laces to be included and more history and information to be accessed on a website through a barcode.

We plan on the Lace Resource Centre becoming a focus for lace makers far and wide. A National Lace Register is being considered, with assistance from Rosemary Shepherd, tutor and lace historian and one of our latest members.

She was former Curator of the Lace Centre at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney.

E

xactly the sentiments applying here for the whole Armidale Regional Council area. And like Sydney, we should be “in a hurry”. As the Herald says, “Decisions being made now will shape life in our homes, workplaces, schools and universities in the next decade”. And far beyond. We have long needed informed, forward thinking, pragmatic decisions to be taken and implemented. I think our region seems to be having one of those rarities - a time when all our local leaders are optimistic and stepping up to the mark and delivering.

I’m apolitical, but credit where credit’s due.

The three tiers of government seem to be doing their best to perform for us and have finished 2016 with some big ticket items, in which the NBN has an undoubted influence. Federally, Barnaby Joyce has persevered with bringing the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority here from Canberra. People who have a knee jerk problem with this haven’t read the knowledgeable professional arguments for this logical and sensible move to join the cluster of relevant facilities we have on tap here. This is forward looking for Australia’s booming agricultural sector, particularly while currently other sectors can be said to be struggling. [Incidentally, has anyone explained to those apparently horrified at the idea of such a move that Armidale is far from an urban backwater? Lucky to come, I’d say.]

State-wise, Adam Marshall has also been beavering away for his constituents, and TAFE’s recently announced new digital hub here is another winner. He has been using his incredible energy on such important fronts as the airport industrial development, hospital, old Court House and, importantly, renewable energy. The long overdue $60,000 facelift for the NE Regional Art Gallery through a State Government grant is another result for the district. Adam is a great believer in positioning for value-adding.

The new Armidale Regional Council,

currently led by Administrator Dr. Ian Tiley, seems to be clearing the decks in many directions and setting in place plans to point us to tighter performance in the future.

He has a lot of big announcements in the pipeline.

Someone asked me recently why I was so annoyingly positive and optimistic and didn’t talk about the bad things I saw locally. Well, this column is called the Icing on the Cake, and I’d certainly rather see the glass half full and still have room to plan on topping it up! [My friend Jenny suggested that I could perhaps flag bad things by calling the column “the Frosting on the Cake”. Not!] Young people should think about the sort of region they want to live in in the future, speaking up and working towards the facilities they want to add to the local lifestyle. We’re all in this together and everyone has a contribution to make, as well as a responsibility for the future.

Cynthia Briggs, who’s finishing her PhD at Sydney University, is one wife and mother who is already stepping up to play her public part in the community: she’s now Creative Producer at the Aboriginal Cultural Centre, is putting her hand up for the New Library Committee and among others things has had The Cynthia Briggs Empowerment through Education Award by the Australian Council for Educational Leaders named after her. Go girl!

It’s good to hear that Locals for Locals and both the Armidale and Guyra Business Chambers have come to a logical agreement to work together on projects - a sensible way to maximise their resources for impact.

And Steve McMillan, tireless Chair of the Armidale Sports Council, tells me he estimates the economic benefit to the region from sporting events in 2016 was approximately $16.4 million. What a present from something that brings so much happiness and health to so very many people!

Four local artists experienced the iconic artist’s camps of Sydney Harbour. The NERAM exhibition Bush to Bay: Hinton and the artist’s camp presents new works created by New England based artists in response to Sydney’s artist camps of the nineteenth century and the art works which depict them.

T

he young Howard Hinton arrived in Sydney in the late nineteenth century and spent a lot of time staying in the artists’ camps around Cremorne and present day Mosman, where he met artists such as Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton and Julian Ashton,” said Robert Heather, Art Museum Director at NERAM. “The paintings by these artists that he collected and donated to the Armidale Teachers’ College are some of the finest works in the Howard Hinton Collection, such as Tom Robert’s iconic painting Mosman’s Bay.” Encouraged by the public enthusiasm for plein-air painting in the 1880s and ‘90s, artist camps flourished around Sydney Harbour, mainly in the Mosman area (then known as Mosman’s Bay). One of the

best known was the Curlew Camp on Little Sirius Cove (beneath present day Taronga Zoo) where Tom Roberts and Arthur Streeton painted some of their most spectacular images of Sydney Harbour.

In 2015, the artists Angus Nivison, Gabrielle Collins, Elouise Roberts and Michelle Hungerford travelled to Sydney with guest curator Sandra McMahon to visit the artist camp sites in Mosman and Cremorne, stay on the Harbour at Cockatoo Island and explore the archives at the Art Gallery of New South Wales Library.

“The artists’ camps were a place where likeminded artists could converse and create, inspired by their surroundings they ate, drank, talked, argued and constructed paintings that have become some of the most significant examples of landscape

painting in Australian art,” said Sandra McMahon, guest curator.

“The tranquil setting that Tom Roberts gazed upon is now a very busy and bustling place and the addition of high rise apartments, parking lots and new wharf made it hard to establish a reference point for the original paintings; the only building still remaining is the sandstone Whaler’s Building, which Roberts depicts in his painting Mosman’s Bay.” The exhibition Bush to Bay: Hinton and the artist’s camp brings together these paintings from different eras and will be on display at New England Regional Art Museum until Sunday 19 March 2017. The exhibition is being presented with support from the Friends of NERAM Inc.

Things with a Difference is a gift and homewares shop that originally opened as a temporary Christmas Pop up Shop. It was such a successful and well-loved shop, that Jane Hannon, the owner of the business, decided to keep it open as a permanent shop. Jane chose the mall as the destination for her new shop, as she is passionate about adding life and vibrancy into the Armidale Mall. My recommendation is to allow half a day to begin to understand how a hundred and eighty year old pastoral property once worked and to allow time to explore the multifaceted, multi layered treasure that is Saumarez Homestead.

How has Saumarez now become a popular destination for locals and visitors alike?

When the National Trust first opened Saumarez Homestead to the public, conservation of the amazing collection of buildings, gardens, farm area, homestead and over 10,000 items that the White Family left for all to enjoy was the main focus, as well as providing the opportunity for visitors to be taken on guided tours of the main homestead and learn about the contents and the one nuclear family members who lived there for almost a century. Over the past 30 years, Saumarez Homestead has developed to be much more than a historic site.

Recently, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources, Barnaby Joyce, visited Saumarez Homestead with the German Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries and his delegation after going to the UNE Smart Farm and touring Saumarez Station, to give his visitors the opportunity to experience Australia’s pastoral heritage.

On a lighter note, we recently had Frank Vagnone and Johnny Yeagley, from Twisted Preservation, New York, USA, experience Saumarez Homestead on a “One Night Stand” to understand the homestead as only an inhabitant can. What other attractions can we find at the Homestead?

One of many exciting developments at Saumarez Homestead has been the establishment of the Heritage Rose Garden Saumarez Homestead by the Northern branch of the Australian Garden History Society, using over 450 roses bred pre 1930 and mainly donated by Miss Catherine MacLean.

In 2017 we will be carrying out major works in the Farm Area at Saumarez Homestead using a very generous grant from the Copland Foundation of $50,000. We will also approach our local supporters and the Armidale and Uralla businesses, who benefit from the thousands of people who come to Saumarez Homestead each year, for additional funds to allow all the work needed to be done. This will enable us to save some of the seriously degraded elements of the Farm Area, including the stables, blacksmith’s shop, wagon shed, hay shed, slaughter house, store and the Thomas House.

Hopefully, we will be able to attract even more people to join our industrious and committed group of volunteers, without whom Saumarez Homestead would not survive, let alone prosper. As the Armidale Regional Airport precinct develops, we are looking forward to exciting times at Saumarez Homestead. Hopefully, we might get a much shorter and easier to drive entrance road and cross promote with a motor museum, air museum, tourism promotion kiosk and even (possibly) an Aviation Hall of Fame.

As you are new to the New England, how have you found the response to SAMA Studio? It’s been great! Class sizes are building, and our first workshop booked out. The space has evolved into something quite social, which I like.

There’s been room for a bit of funny banter in between more concentrated aspects of practice, as well as some really lovely sharing and deep conversation too.

What’s happening at SAMA Studio for January?

We reopen 3rd January, with more classes across the timetable.

We’ve added guided relaxation to Tuesday, Yin to Thursday, and a Beginner/General class to Saturday. We will start up again with workshops on the 21st; this day retreat will be focused on releasing old patterning and creating space for the new - a pretty nourishing way to welcome in the New Year. H

ow long have you and your family called the New England home, and why did you choose this part of the world to live in?

I moved to the Walcha district when I married my husband, Hugh, in 1994. His family moved here from Scotland when his great, great grandfather arrived in 1840.

Introduce us to your label, “Letto Bello Linen”. What was the inspiration behind this?

As a child growing up in western Queensland, one of my earliest memories is of my grandmother’s beautiful pure cotton sheets, often with hand embroidered monograms.

Post school I studied Interior Design and have always had a love of quality fabrics and design.

After sketching a design, I email it through to my women in Vietnam. After the designs are hand embroidered, the panels are then sewn together to make sheets, pillowcases or doona sets. What does it mean to you personally to be able to give back to a community and also produce a beautiful product?

I have been lucky enough to visit my women in their village homes and share meals with their families. They have shown me their skills of embroidery passed down over generations.

It is great knowing they can work from their village environment earning a wage, living at home with their families, without having to travel to large cities to find work. Sometimes they are involved in planting or harvest, so the embroidery has to wait. Believe me, it’s worth waiting for. Their work and attention to detail is beautiful. I also work with a group who look after some very disabled and disadvantaged children. Their gorgeous drawings are printed onto my pure cotton panels, with some details highlighted by hand embroidery and then it is made into colourful Bambino range of bedlinen only available through Letto Bello. It’s great to visit these children and to know I am helping to contribute to their care and welfare.

We opened a pop up shop to test the market and then moved into our beautiful shop over the road from the NAB, almost two years ago. gaining huge admiration.

Our homewares shop also offers an interior design service, with window treatments and soft furnishings to full fitouts.

I take Letto Bello Linen to various Fairs in New South Wales and Queensland, so customers can see and feel the quality and then when they jump online to order, they know what it’s like.

Lastly, what to you is one of New Englands Best Kept Secrets and why?

I feel our little towns of Walcha and Uralla with their artistic communities are some of the New England’s best kept secrets. Such incredible scenery with the National Parks, and the individual character of the shops, and products available within. Promoting quality and something different is the key to retail these days.

hen was Invergowrie Store established?

The store is pretty unique in that it has only had four owners in its existence. It was built back in 1977, when the area of Invergowrie began to build as a place that people wanted to live and there were smaller property blocks available.

It was the basic shape it is still today, and each owner has put their individual stamp on it, with the addition of petrol station, gas filling facilities, and the cooking of takeaway food.

When and why did you both decide to take it over?

We took over back in July 2005. We decided to take it over, as Barney had lived in this area most of his life, and his family used to get the paper here every day. I was pregnant with our first daughter, Ashley, and was approaching maternity leave, so we took the plunge - and

Plans for the future?

The Armidale Road Rider Motorcycle Group do night rides out for pizza nights, community bus groups come from other towns for a drive with the elderly, we have a lovely group who come every Tuesday for coffee and a yarn.

January is the perfect time to visit Guyra. With its mild summer temperatures, spectacular natural attractions, and family friendly events and activities, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Migratory Birds are in the area. The Mother of Ducks Lagoon is one of Guyra’s most important landmarks. Mother of Ducks Lagoon is situated at the south-western edge of the Guyra township. Come face-to-face with a huge variety of birds, including endangered and threatened species. See if you can glimpse the renowned Japanese Snipe, which lives here from August to April, before returning to Japan, and keep an eye out for other migratory birds, including common greenshanks and white-throated needletails.

Only a short (25 km) drive away you can also visit Little Llangothlin Lagoon - a birdwatcher’s haven. This is one of only a few high altitude wetlands in the country and is an important breeding and feeding area for migratory birds such as the Japanese Snipe.

Trout fishing season is open.

In our high country, Rainbow and Brown Trout thrive in lightly fished streams and can be fished between October and May. On the western side of Guyra, trout can be found in a number of streams: Laura, Ollera, Moredun, and Limestone creeks. Trout can also be found in eastern streams: Booralong, Rockvale, and streams in the Ebor area. There are a number of fishing farm stays surrounding Guyra, some providing dam fishing and creek fishing. The tomato farm employs more than 600 staff across the two sites and is the most modern of its kind in Australia.

Arts North West is the Regional Arts Development Organisation for the New England North West.

Put simply, our brief is to assist in getting arts and cultural activity happening in our region. We are one of 14 organisations across NSW that are part funded by State Government and by contributions from local councils. We have been working in this region for 20 years, and we look after eleven council areas - Tenterfield, Glen Innes, Moree, Gwydir, Narrabri, Gunnedah, Liverpool Plains, Tamworth, Walcha, Uralla and of course Armidale. Our small staff of four covers 95,000 square kilometres!

What does Arts North West do?

Our role is very broad. Our core business includes a multitude of day to day enquiries, providing immediate and quality advice, information and professional support to artists and organisations, as well as the research, promotion and advocacy we oversee to promote arts and culture in our region.

We also provide an opportunity to forge key partnerships and networks across our region - we put people together so we have networks for literature, visual arts, theatre and key cultural leaders. Here in the New England North West we are lucky to have so many arts activities to choose from - theatre, music, visual arts, museums and galleries, dance, literature - it doesn’t take much to find something to do.

What are your plans for 2017?

We have a very busy and exciting year ahead with a number of key projects.

In our Aboriginal Cultural Support Program we have an exciting project that has been funded by the Federal Government. Rivers to Ridges and the stories in between will use the traditional concept of songlines in a contemporary form of multimedia to share and document stories of Elders, artists and areas of Aboriginal significance in our region.

We are also working with young people on a number of projects - from working with remote primary schools on commemorating the Charge of Beersheba in 1917, to creating a collection of digital stories with writers and museums in the Stuff of Tales.

Our special arts and disability project Putting the Pieces Together will go on exhibition in Moree, Armidale and Tamworth - this is an art installation of 16 cubes made from 96 individual puzzle pieces, representative of building blocks of an inclusive arts sector.

And finally we are running Table Talk, a series of pottery workshops for refugees and new migrants to the New England North West of NSW which combine conversational English, making pottery bowls and adding traditional designs from their own cultures.

These projects have been made possible from funding support from Arts NSW, Accessible Arts, Multicultural NSW respectively.

ADFAS is all about the arts. Members subscribe to a series of enjoyable lectures across a broad spectrum of fine, decorative, contemporary and creative art forms.

Anyone with an interest in the arts or who wishes to develop an interest in the arts is very welcome to join.

ADFAS lectures are enjoyable social events where international and local speakers share their enthusiasm for the arts. ADFAS Armidale Lectures are held in a convivial environment starting at 6pm, mostly on Thursdays, in the TAS Hoskins Centre and are followed by light refreshments.

Pharmacist Caroline Sevil has had quite a journey from her birthplace in Northern Ireland to owning the Uralla Pharmacy, where she fell in love with the local community.

W

here are you originally from, and why did you decide to become a pharmacist?

I am originally from a village called Ballykelly in County Derry, Northern Ireland. I went to Termoncanice Primary school in the nearby town of Limavady and then on to grammar school at Loreto College, Coleraine. My father was a farmer, and I have three older brothers. I always enjoyed science subjects and art at school and originally wanted to study dentistry, but my love of art finally won over and I attended art college in Manchester after leaving school. Following this, I had the opportunity to travel to Australia on a holiday/work visa for a year, and it was at the end of this trip that I met my future husband, Angus.

When I came to Australia, I decided to pursue a career in the health industry. Pharmacy was appealing to me, as it was science based and was a career I could continue in rural Australia, which was important to me. I attended Sydney University and completed a bachelor of Pharmacy in 2000. I then did my internship at Sel Brown’s pharmacy in Quirindi.

Following this I managed another of Sel Brown’s pharmacies at Werris Creek for a few years.

I purchased my first pharmacy at Murrurundi in 2008. After five years I decided to sell and had the opportunity to buy Uralla Pharmacy in 2013. Uralla was appealing, as it is a bustling country town with an interesting mix of people.

Tell us about your family.

When not being a pharmacist, what would we find you doing?

On the weekend I would probably be taking my son, Gus, to Saturday sport - which is cricket at the moment - or attending one of Annabel’s violin performances. I go for a power walk with my husband most mornings for half an hour, but I love to cycle, which can be a bit daunting sometimes on the rough country roads. I like to play chess with Gus, reading, swimming, sketching, playing the piano and tennis. I am also involved with the Willow Tree Primary school P & C and organise the canteen and take photos at school events. I also help my husband on the property with cattle or sheep work, or anything that requires a hand.

Plans for the future?

I would like to take on a pharmacy graduate for their intern year and provide mentoring for them.

I am interested in expanding a pharmacy service within the pharmacy which links the GP, diabetes educator and pharmacy to provide healthcare for diabetic patients.

I hope to continue to provide the Uralla community with the optimum healthcare and advice that they deserve for many years to come.

ou may have come across the term “Software as a Service” (SaaS). We can see it in our use of cloud-based tools, including Microsoft Office 365 and Mailchimp. SaaS allows us to work (and play) anywhere, anytime - if we have internet access.

Let me introduce Scott Hamey of New England Avionics, whose start-up is based on a completely new offering: DaaS or “Drones as a Service”. New England Avionics has just completed the SproutX Pre-Accelerator program.

With investors already on board, New England Avionics will officially launch its operations in January 2017.

What does New England Avionics do?

Our focus is on providing training and traineeships in DaaS. We find the work, manage the apprenticeship, place them in the workforce and provide training. It is a NSW traineeship that can be delivered as a HSC course. The UAVAir pilot program has seen four schools set up in the New England area.

We are currently working on expanding the pilot to include Armidale and in talks with UNE in relation to offering third year agricultural students the opportunity to do the Cert III. Our training, delivered in partnership with CASA-certified and government-accredited training provider UAVAir, upskills business owners and staff in the use of UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles). We offer a range of managed services to assist their day-to-day use of UAVs in their business or organisation, including: UAV technology and CASA regulation consulting; equipment servicing; fleet management 38 new england focus.

As exciting as drones are, essentially you are starting up a training organisation; what led you to this particular concept?

My passion is tackling youth unemployment.

Armidale struggles to provide opportunities for many young people. Focusing on a growth sector will provide opportunity for employment. The sector has largely been unregulated; however, this is changing and the need for qualified, well-trained drone operators who understand the unique needs of business in the agricultural and environmental sector will quickly become a priority. This endeavour takes advantage of my interest and experience in IT&T and addresses my personal social mission.

What are your credentials for setting up a drone training organisation?

I have been in the industry since 2011 and was in the telecommunications industry for ten years. My two other shareholders are a data scientist and a software electrical engineer.

While there are a lot of training providers, UAVAir is the only RTO provider that offers a Certificate III or a Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) Certification Course that is offered in conjunction with a Certificate III Aviation (Remote Pilot - Visual Line of Sight), which is a nationally recognised qualification.

Aren’t drones simply a flying camera that takes real estate videos and beautiful landscapes?

Drones are a piece of equipment in the same way that a tractor is. Their value is in what they are used for. Previously, they could only fly for a few minutes and were commercially

The industry is currently working on hybrid power for drones that will increase flight times up to three hours.

Another factor is the development of software that works at the farm’s (cloud) edge. Information can be processed on a laptop or tablet locally and when connectivity is available can be backed up to the cloud. There are no limits on its potential commercial use.

From a business perspective, who benefits from the use of drones?

By 2020, drones will be a 40-billion-dollar industry.

They are useful for: crop scouting; asset and infrastructure audits and management - for example, fence lines. Drones are also very useful after a disaster; water asset management (e.g. pipelines/dams); mustering (e.g. hunting down lost livestock); vegetation control (e.g. weeds) and ways we haven’t invented yet!

Drones in the renewable sector, for example, in wind farms, allow you to conduct a safety or maintenance inspection without shutting down the wind turbines.

Our traineeships will be focused on the agricultural and renewables sector with training focused on the specific needs of these industries.

On 29 September 2016, CASA lifted regulations on remote licences. Sub 2 kg drones (and sub 25 kg for farmers) will not require a licence. However, you will not be able to get

insurance. UAVAir has created a 2-day course that enables drone operators to qualify for insurance. However, there is a significant need for highly qualified pilots to work in industry, and New England Avionics will address that need.

Why Armidale?

The New England presents opportunity for the expansion of large-scale renewable energy projects, precision farming research and development (e.g. the UNE Smart Farm), expansion of potential mining activities, ongoing broad-acre agricultural innovation etc. All these represent real opportunities for future local UAV applications, and especially for local UAV training.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Our biggest challenge has been establishing the right partnerships and identifying the right software solutions to suit current connectivity conditions.

What does the future hold?

We will be working with our R&D pilot sites to refine the traineeship program, and we are at an interesting commercial-in-confidence stage with a potential pilot participant. We will also be speaking to local businesses with an interest in the agricultural or renewable sector.

Our intention is to employ 10 to 15 staff in the next 2 - 3 years, and in 4 - 5 years we plan to expand to other regional areas of Australia.

2017 is a significant milestone in the life of Presbyterian Ladies’ College, Armidale and the community is celebrating. In 2017, the prominent regional all-girls’ school will turn 130 years old, having been governed by the Presbyterian Church for seventy-five of those years.

LC Armidale has experienced six different physical locations within Armidale and had numerous name and governance changes.

In its milestone year, PLC Armidale will embark upon a new global initiative, opening its doors to the first cohort of girls enrolled in the newly created one-year, residential, intensive English language (ELICOS) centre and cultural familiarization program.

Entitled, PLC Pathways, the new program officially opens its doors on February 6, heralding a new chapter in the colourful history of the College.

The recently appointed Director of PLC Pathways, Mr Christopher Spencer, is known to many in the diverse educational community as a well-respected educator, with exceptional experience in both independent and government schools. Chris shares his story with FOCUS, as the College prepares to embrace its new opportunity.

How have you settled in to your new role at PLC Armidale?

I’ll let you know when I have! I’m really relishing this opportunity to utilise a broad range of my experiences in teaching and leading to build a program from a philosophical foundation right through to classroom practice.

I have been familiar with PLC and many of the staff for a long time. That’s been really helpful, as schools are busy and intense places.

After some major investment in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics)

in 2016, students at Uralla Central School are all set to enhance their critical thinking, communication, collaboration, connectivity, creativity and cultural skills, which are all seen as critical for the ever-changing future world of work. FOCUS speaks with Bill Platts, a Science teacher helping to lead the charge.

i Bill. Tell us what’s happening at Uralla Central School?

Well, it’s all very exciting and fairly exhausting at the same time. I’m sure most of your readers would be aware of the impact of technologies on the world of work and by definition, the future world of work. Our principal, Michael Rathborne, has really been passionately committed to the moral imperative that all of the staff must have towards helping prepare our students not for our today, but their tomorrow. So this year we have invested close to $40,000 in Beebots, Bluebots, Probots, mBots, Spheros, tablets and Lego Mindstorms EV3; to coincide with this, our reorganised school structures - a Junior (K-4), Middle (5-8) and Senior School (9-Academy II) - have allowed the introduction of a whole series of new elective subjects from the Middle School up - Coding, Code Academy, STEM, and STEM Video games. Head of Middle School, Dan Williams, has developed the CAPaBLE (Curiosity And Passion Based Learning Experiences) model which incorporates a lot of projectbased learning opportunities for students and is increasingly turning STEAM into STEAMED (STEAM + Entrepreneurship and Design).

Wow, sounds like a lot going on! How has it changed what you do?

That’s an excellent question. At first it was quite frightening to let go of what might be best described as my traditional teacher role and more importantly, the old style classroom, but I wouldn’t go back to that now. On some days it might seem from the outside looking in to be chaos, but when you actually walk around and watch and listen to students really engaging with their learning, it’s empowering for everyone.

What I quickly learned was that my job is so much more exciting when one is the “lead learner” in a group of learners, as opposed to the teacher at the front dictating to students with fairly tedious text books. We’re all about building a positive culture of learning and everyone having a growth mindset, rather than a fixed mindset. I established pretty early on that many of the students knew much more than I did and that instead of repressing that, we had to set it free.

How did you do that?

Well, our first lot of “bot” purchases was

meant to be “it”, partly because we weren’t certain where our students were at.

What I quickly realised was that not only was I behind them, but they were way ahead of the fairly simple “bots” we had purchased. So the end result was that we had to purchase a whole lot more with higher specifications.

The nice thing about this was that we were then able to implement the more simple “bots” into the learning of students in our Junior School, often with students from the Senior School leading that learning. This is significant, because it is estimated that within the next two - five years at least 90% of the workforce will need a basic level of digital literacy and that one in two Australians will need higher tech skills such as programming and software development. These figures can be a bit scary, but as a staff I know we feel that we are now better equipped to really prepare our students for their world which, whilst it might see many of the jobs that we know disappear, will see far more develop that we’ve never even considered.

So, where to from here?

When we started on this journey at the

beginning of 2016, a lot of the projects that students got involved in were fairly whimsical; for example, building chariots for “bots” and designing and building obstacle courses to code them around. Now however, things are developing to higher or more technical levels, especially more sophisticated coding. There is a group of students who have been building a Minecraft replica of the school, a mirror image if you will, underneath the actual school. We also have students working collaboratively to develop and road-test learning spaces and then deliver recommendations to the principal about school improvement. We are all about getting students to learn with technology, not for technology. A recent case study of Uralla carried out by the Regional Australia Institute posed a couple of really pertinent questions. “Uralla is well placed to provide kids with a good education - but are kids given the opportunity to develop their hard and soft skills? Do teachers in Uralla have access to the skills and tools they need to use digital technology to help students build essential skills?” We believe the answer is, yes, and it’s just full STEAM ahead!

THE NEW NATIONAL DISABILITY INSURANCE SCHEME (NDIS) IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR PEOPLE WITH A DISABILITY TO IMPROVE THEIR LIVES, AND A CHALLENGE TO SERVICE PROVIDERS, WHOSE SUCCESS WILL BE MEASURED ON HOW WELL THEY SUPPORT THEIR DISABLED CLIENTS.

he quality of the service delivered by providers comes down to the skill of frontline staff - which is why the University of New England (UNE) has developed two new courses to help people working in the disability services sector develop their skills. Course coordinator Dr Mary McMillan tells us about about UNE’s Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma in Disability Management, which are being launched in 2017, to prepare graduates for the roll-out of the NDIS and the demand for new, client-driven services and support.

Why has UNE introduced these courses?

The NDIS shakes up the world of disability service provision, and everyone who works in that environment is experiencing change. One of the outcomes of focus group discussions at UNE was that the implementation of the NDIS has created a real demand for employees with specialist education and training in disability. We have responded to this increasing need with the introduction of these courses for 2017. The aim of these courses is to provide essential skills in understanding the scientific basis of disability, while also focusing on organisational management and transformation.

Who are the new courses they aimed at?

These courses are aimed at anyone who has an interest in, or is already working in, areas of service provision, such as disability support, human services, rehabilitation, or other health services. People already working in the industry

How long does it take to complete the courses?

The Graduate Certificate can be completed in one or two years of part-time study, while the Graduate Diploma can be completed in two to four years of part-time study.

Do students have to attend the campus to do the courses?

We want to make study as accessible and flexible as possible. We have designed these courses so that they can be completed online, without ever setting foot on campus. Students can study in their own time, wherever they live, while they manage other work and family commitments.

eing part of a club or team can offer countless hours of recreational fun and enjoyment with friends and teammates. Given the emotive nature of competitive sport and the high level of physical exertion required, you may find yourself in the unfortunate predicament of exploring your legal options in order to be compensated for an injury or to appeal an adverse decision or suspension handed down against you.

In regional Australia we are seldom confronted with the sports law issues that frequent the major professional sporting codes such as doping, underpayment of athletes, match-mixing and live betting. Instead the sports law issues commonly encountered in amateur sports are those concerning: 1. Mandatory bans, suspensions and sanctions.

2. Deductions of competition points.

3. Fines.

4. Disciplinary hearings.

5. Grievance resolutions and appeals processes.

6. Claiming insurance for injuries.

All sports have their own rules, codes of conduct, laws, disciplinary procedures and processes.

In most instances the on-field referee or umpire has authority to adjudicate a match at their discretion. An accumulation of cautions throughout the season or a citation for serious misconduct will normally attract a mandatory suspension that will vary depending on the gravity of the alleged offence(s) and the player’s disciplinary history.

Most of the time referees and umpires get it right, however sometimes they don’t. In situations where the wrong player has been cited it is possible to appeal on the grounds of mistaken identity. In reality, when it comes to revoking or downgrading mandatory sanctions sporting judicial bodies are reluctant to overturn on-field decisions. This unfortunately means the principles of procedural fairness that should otherwise be implemented, and upheld are often forfeited for a streamlined method of dealing with disciplinary matters.

Some tribunals and disciplinary panels will not consider evidence regardless of how clear and convincing that evidence may be. Legal representatives and advocates are often unable to represent players at hearings unless in exceptional circumstances and where leave has been granted.

The lack of transparency in some decision-making processes can often lead to bias and impartiality. Avenues for appealing a tribunal’s decision are limited, expensive and not available in circumstances where regulations and by-laws have expressly removed the right to further appeals and recourse to the courts. A solicitor will be able to assist in explaining the steps of a disciplinary process and how to lodge an appeal to a governing body. A solicitor can also help you prepare for a hearing and represent you in some circumstances.

Many sporting clubs, bodies and organisations include insurance covers with registration. It is important to check the terms and conditions of your policy so you know exactly where you stand and what you are covered for. If an insurance policy is not offered or included, you may want to consider taking out private health insurance to cover any medical expenses such as hospital and ambulance charges that can be incurred in the event of a serious injury. If you have suffered a sporting injury which has left you out-of-pocket or unable to work, you may be entitled to make a claim on your policy. If you are unsure about how to make a claim of or are having difficulties with your insurer, it may be a good idea to speak to a solicitor to ensure you receive the maximum benefits you are entitled to.

Whether you train and compete on a regular basis, play for leisure, exercise to stay in shape, coach, manage, spectate or are involved in the administration of your local sports club or association, it is important to know your rights and options from the outset.
