C

an you talk us through the challenging time of diagnosis of childhood cancer and the impact it had on you and your family?

Being diagnosed with cancer at just six years of age meant that for much of my childhood, cancer WAS my life.

Cancer stole so much from me. It stole a big chunk of my childhood and my chance to be a normal kid … my self-esteem … my freedom to do things … my early education … and to a great degree, my childhood innocence. I lost my connection to the real world.

My diagnosis and treatment interrupted my family’s life as well. I am just grateful that I had parents who were willing to put their own lives on hold to help me on my journey.

How did you become involved with CQ? My family knew little about Camp Quality before I was diagnosed. About seven months into my treatment, the local Manager in Coffs Harbour came to see us, and my journey and life took on a different trajectory from that point.

I went to my first camp while I was still on treatment - bald head and all - but off came my bandanna! Camp Quality quickly became my second family.

NIDHI MAHAJAN WAS A RECENT COMPETITOR ON MASTERCHEF AND WILL BE ATTENDING THIS YEAR’S CURRYFEST AT WOOLGOOLGA. FOCUS FOUND OUT ABOUT HER TV EXPERIENCE AND ALSO WHAT PEOPLE CAN EXPECT TO SEE HER CREATING AT THE EVENT ... ou recently competed on MasterChef. Can you tell us a bit about that experience?

Being a contestant in MasterChef Australia 2016 was a surreal experience. I never thought I would be doing something like that in my life. Being on MasterChef was living in a food world. What we did was only food, cook, eat, read, live, love, think, sleep and repeat.

What did you learn from the experience?

I learnt a lot from this experience, not only just about food, but also about my abilities and strengths as a person - time management and working with unique ingredients, and actually learning that I am more capable of doing things than I used to think beyond my capabilities.

When did you begin cooking?

I started cooking when I was 10 years old.

time I was 12, I could make proper meals and snacks for the family.

Do you have a favourite spice or flavour?

Yes, I love working with green cardamom, as it is a versatile spice. I use it for sweet and savoury dishes. It not only adds a depth to the dish, but a lingering aroma which tantalises the senses.

If you could work with any chef around the world, who would it be and why?

Actually, there are two. I want to work with Marco Pierre White, as he is a legend in the industry and I really look up to him for being a godfather of modern cooking.

Sanjeev Kapoor: he is one person who inspired my passion for food. I grew up watching his cooking shows and cooking from his cook books. He brought a revolution in the Indian food industry.

Are you excited about Curryfest?

Yes, I am very excited, as Woolgoolga was an early settlement for the Sikh migrants.

This gives us an insight into how they settled in the Australian culture and lifestyle. I have never been to such a big Curryfest, and I am pumped to be a part of this festival.

What can people expect to see you create?

I will be giving a demo of my favourite dishes in the kitchen, and how in a short time one can create restaurant quality food in the kitchen without any exotic ingredients. Simple and flavourful is what people can expect in the demo.

What advice would you give to someone who is interested in learning to cook Indian cuisine?

Indian cooking is very simple, as well as a

complex cuisine. The perfection comes with practice. Creating a balance of the flavours is the most important point and to strike a balance, add a little and taste and then repeat ‘til your palate appreciates it. One needs to know what spice will go with what vegetable/ meat/fruit.

What are your hopes for the future?

I am putting my heart and soul into my food, so that my dream will come true. I will be able to cook for people who love me and love my food. This is what I wanted to do when I was 13 years old; this wait has been worth the last 17 years. I hope to live each moment in food and with food.

ow long have you lived in the area?

We moved to Armidale with our young family from Melbourne in 1966, intending to stay for only two years - fifty years on, and we are still happily here! We purchased a home in O’Connor Road (which in those days was a gravel road on the edge of town and in the Dumaresq Shire) and last year moved to Newling Gardens Retirement Village.

Describe the type of work you specialise in.

I have been involved in art ever since we have been in Armidale, and initially undertook a course at TAFE, where I quickly found a fascination with prints and printmaking. I have been working with this medium ever since, concentrating on collagraphs, which in effect are printed collages. The designs on the printing plates are built up with many textures - fabric, lace, threads, grit, wood shavings, mesh - in short, anything which is printable and which will give an interesting effect. Printing is not a quick process and needs lots of stamina, patience and persistence - sometimes resulting in a degree of “spoilage”, which usually ends up being utilised to make collage for cards. I restrict my prints to

limited editions and they are usually embellished with chine colle, a process whereby papers, foils and fabric are introduced to the image during the printing process itself. I am fortunate to have my own etching press and use Italian paper made by a mill which was established in 1404. I have held ten one-person exhibitions and participated in many two-person and over fifty group shows over the years. As prints are so “transportable”, a large number have found new homes in many overseas countries, and they are also held in private and several public collections within Australia.

Other than artworks, what are your other interests?

As I love doing my art, it is my main preoccupation; however, I also enjoy knitting where I can also utilise design and colour by making squares for the Wrap with Love project to make into blankets to be sent overseas for those in need. As to outdoor activities, that would be classed as being quite sedate, with long walks - there are plenty of places to enjoy in the area, including the beautiful Mike O’Keefe reserve, which is right next door.

ow long have you lived in the area?

We moved to Armidale in 2003 from the Blue Mountains. We wanted to live in a regional community that still offered all the opportunities of a city without the commuting!

Describe the type of artwork you specialise in?

I’ve been specialising in encaustic wax painting for over 20 years, having learned the technique at art school. Encaustic wax painting was developed in Greece over 2,000 years ago. Originally beeswax was used by ship builders to caulk joints and for waterproofing; pigment was then added and patterns created on the hull of ships. Greek artists then used the technique for easel painting and 3D sculptural works. When the Greeks migrated to Egypt in the 2nd Century, the local population adopted some of the cultural practices, using encaustic to paint funerary portraits. Encaustic wax painting continued on until the 7th Century, where it fell out of favour, and the technique was lost in the Middle Ages.

Rediscovered in the early 20th Century, the method has grown in popularity with contemporary artists, who delight in its lush, translucent properties. It’s wonderful for collage, as you can paint it on any rigid surface. I then create layers of colour and texture, scratching back into the surface. It’s an innately organic medium and incredibly versatile.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Everywhere and anywhere! I love old books and magazines, found objects and used fabrics. Everything has a history and story to tell. I’m interested in using discarded objects that no longer have a purpose any more. It’s about capturing the history of everyday things and putting them together in a new form.

I’m also interested in looking at how cultural norms have evolved over the years and how beliefs have changed.

Other than your artworks, what are your other interests?

I love music and reading. I’m also into sewing and upcycling old clothes and fabrics into something new and functional again.

We’ve put together an orchestra of twelve talented musicians of both current students and alumni. I hope that this will pave the way for future opportunities, where both past and present students are able to work together both musically and creatively.

Melissa, what other opportunities will Annie bring to the students of O’Connor?

The opportunities for students extend beyond those who are performing on stage.

A Technical Crew has been established, led by former Armidale resident Anthony Carlon, who is currently working professionally as a lighting designer in Sydney. This crew will take care of the physical and technical running of the show, and these students will have the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of technical design and production management.

I’ll be leading a hair, makeup and costume team, who are busily creating an authentic late 1930s look, which includes over 150 individual costumes. A marketing and promotions team are already writing publicity releases, and are involved in documenting the development and process of the show through creating digital content that will be released online. Visual arts, hospitality and construction students are all eagerly preparing for the production and embracing their skills by helping to create set pieces, props and catering for the performances. It is such a huge undertaking for the entire college community. It’s something that this generation of O’Connor students has never experienced before; being able to give students this kind of opportunity on such a large scale is something very special. I believe this might see a welcome boost in student interest and participation in creative and performing arts in years ahead at O’Connor.

Saumarez spring garden fair 2016 To celebrate the spring re-opening of Saumarez Homestead after a short winter break, the Saumarez Spring Garden Fair will be held on 10th and 11th September 2016 from 10am to 4pm each day. Free entry to the gardens and grounds.

Landscape designers, gardeners and writers will be presenting special lectures from 2pm on Saturday 10th September and on Sunday 11th September from 11am.

M

y journey began in the mid 1950s, when I was just a teenager. My parents, with me and my sister, migrated to Australia, to Adelaide, in 1956. There was a great dollop of American culture, including Elvis Presley and a new phenomenon called Rock and Roll and American television as well, and I was just swept along with it and found out that I could singI I used to copy all the early ‘50s songs in my bedroom or my local school or youth centre, and stuff like that.

Fifty odd years later, I find myself still making my living as an entertainer. I am a very lucky man; I have had some good times, mixed with some good people and have lots of stories to tell. I must write a book one day.

You are coming to play at our day on the green this year at Petersons Winery. The line up is a group of artists that you must know well? Do you enjoy meeting up with everyone, and is there a good camaraderie throughout the festival?

Yes, I have done a few of these over the years on the bills of various artists and yes, I get on pretty well with everybody. Obviously Wendy Matthews is doing it again, and Richard Clapton, Thirsty Merc - I have been a fan of Ray Thistlethwayte for many years; I have a lot of respect for him, and Mick Skelton works with me. I work with lots of musicians around the

countryside, and good drummers are in demand.

We have a good band with us up there: Gordon Richmister on drums, Jack Harrison on guitar, and a few other people from here in Sydney.

I see that there is a final tribute to Stevie Wright? Is everyone going to be involved in that tribute?

Yes, we do Evie. I will be there to do the middle part. I also do a duet with Wendy Matthews … an old Dusty Springfield song.

These shows only happen because you have released so many songs and are so well known. Do you still enjoy playing all these songs and find it satisfying that all these people are coming because these songs have stood the test of time?

Yes, that's part of my life now and going back and revisiting my body of work from the ‘60s, The Twilights, and the ‘70s, beginning with Axium, Brian Cadd, Little Ray of Sunshine and those sort of songs and on through Little River Band. Obviously while being in those bands, I was making machinery - trying to sell those songs as lead singer of a band and as a songwriter. Now I have some songs that people have taken notice of, some of which have become classics. I live off my children, as it were - they are my children.

I love to get up on stage and sing good material that has come my way over the years.

I am not a heavy metal man, I am not a crash, bang, bang, thump, thump man. I like good melodies, good lyrics, good harmonies, and

good playing. Hopefully quality music!

You actually have a brand new solo album coming out in September.

The first single, Hear My Voice is all about recent troubles and legal battles that were going on with LRB. Was that something you particularly wanted to write about, or did it just happen?

Well, last year or the year before, that whole LRB thing came up again. The current LRB in America were going to go on the Jimmy Fallon Show and celebrate their 40th year. I took umbrage to it and managed to stop them doing that, but it is a thorn in the original members’ sides - but it doesn't stop me at all.

How would you describe the music on Rise Again, and did you enjoy being back in the studio?

I haven't recorded an album for some time and my profile is probably not as prominent as it should be, and that's one of the reasons why I wanted to write some songs ... Just to say, "Hey, look - it's me still around". The plan was to put out five or six tracks by social media, and then other people started giving me songs.

My old colleague from back in the ‘60s, Terry Britten, the grammy award winning songwriter in London had a couple of songs, and all of a sudden I had an album. I will promote it later

on this year.

Shall we be expecting to see a Rise Again tour?

Not as such; I am not going to go out there and just sing that material, because people want to hear my old material. If Rise Again gets noticed, then I will concentrate on the new material as much as the old material. I am just going to see how the album goes first.

With all the hits you've had, is it hard to pick the songs you will be performing at a day on the green?

Yes, it is a bit awkward for me, because I have so much material; I just have to be careful about what I perform. If I leave out some songs, like Help is on its Way, Reminiscing or Cool Change, people can be disappointed. I sing the hits; the people are there to hear the music. For those shows I mainly do the LRB songs. The old songs are the ones people want to hear.

The Walcha farmers’ markets Spring to the Walcha Farmers’ Markets this September.

The Walcha Farmers’ Markets are re-commencing again Saturday 17th September, starting at 8:30am, after breaking during winter.

The markets are set to yet again include a diverse and exciting range of stalls and entertainment in the picturesque grounds of McHattan Park in Walcha. McHattan Park is a safe and very well maintained park, including beautiful gardens and sculptures throughout and a great play area for children, all within short walking distance to the town centre.

Market goers can look forward to fresh produce, gourmet food, espresso coffee, home-made milkshakes and lemonade, BBQ breakfast and lunch, plants, and health and wellbeing stalls, including massage and natural skin products, whilst being serenaded by live music.

WELL, THE OLD SAYING "GONE TO HELL IN A HAND BASKET" (OBSCURE NOW ANYWAY) SEEMS TO BE SUPERCEDED EVERYWHERE LATELY BY THE SENSATION OF BEING ON FULL SPIN IN A WASHING MACHINE!

've had plenty of time for reflection while having a back operation in Sydney, and increasingly seeing the multiple advantages of living where we do. Balancing the pluses and minuses periodically keeps our life accounting up to date. The noise of information on different platforms can get very out of hand and end with us staring at a screen and rather losing the plot if we don't lift our eyes and engage with the realities of the immediate world around us. And the eyes of the people in front of us.

Being connected though, did remind me of some of the things I was missing: “Tommy” at the Hoskins, events at the Armidale Art Gallery and NERAM, the Opera Australia performance of The Marriage of Figaro at Lazenby with our own children's choir. I’ve also missed the first meeting of our new Council Arts & Cultural Advisory Committee, which hopefully will bring together the range of talents in our district in ways that enhance them all.

That's one of the skills our district has to exploit to support the confident health, growth and life of our community, and demonstrate them in ways that ensure we get our rightful share of the national attention and cake.

There are lessons from the Olympics about building teams through trust and commitment, accountability and the enjoyment that comes with satisfaction.

2 chorizo, sliced 2 slices bacon, diced 1 onion, sliced 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 tsp thyme 1 tsp oregano ½ a chilli, seeded and finely diced ½ red capsicum, diced 1 carrot, peeled and diced 2 tbsp smoked paprika 1 tbsp ground cumin 1 tbsp tomato paste 2 x 250 g tins white beans 1 x 250 g tin crushed tomatoes 1 bunch of fresh coriander, chopped Salt and pepper 250 ml chicken stock

method In a saucepan over low heat, fry onions and garlic until soft. Add chorizo and bacon and cook for a few minutes. Add the herbs and spices, and continue to cook for two minutes. Add the capsicum, carrot, chilli and cook for six - seven minutes. Add tomato paste, cook for a few minutes, then add the tomatoes and chicken stock. Season with salt and pepper, add the beans and simmer over a low heat for 10 minutes. Sprinkle with coriander before serving.

his new exhibition at the New England Regional Art Museum is an opportunity to discover the work of the photographer Rennie Ellis (1940 - 2003), a key figure in Australian visual culture. Ellis is best remembered for his effervescent observations of Australian life during the 1970s - 90s, including his now iconic book Life is a beach. Although invariably inflected with his own personality and wit, the thousands of social documentary photographs taken by Ellis during this period now form an important

historical record.

This exhibition of photographs provides a personal account of what Ellis termed “a great period of change”. His photographs explore the cultures and subcultures of the period, and provide a strong sense of a place that now seems worlds away, a world free of risk, of affordable inner city housing, of social protest, of disco and pub rock, of youth and exuberance.

hat is the Schools Spectacular?

The 2016 Schools Spectacular is Australia’s most popular annual variety show, and this year will feature four Armidale Public Schools in the largest production in the 33-year history of the event. The Public Schools extravaganza will be held on Friday and Saturday 25 and 26 November at a brand new venue, Qudos Bank Arena, Sydney Olympic Park. It has recently been announced that the show will feature a 2,700 strong choir, 2,300 dancers and 80 piece symphony orchestra, a world class stage band, along with a number of outstanding solo performers.

For students Jaynaha Brown, Kiara French and Joanne Morgan, this will be their second appearance at the spectacular. They will be joined by other AHS students from Years 7-11, who will perform with the Aboriginal dance ensemble. The ensemble are taught dances by world renowned choreographers from the Bangarra Dance Theatre during a dance workshop in Sydney. The students then return to their own schools and rehearse under the guidance of teacher Louise Drielsma.

Duval High School has over 25 students participating in a range of performances, including the Combined Choir, Aboriginal Dance Ensemble and Combined Dance. Patrick Ferris (PJ) and Elanya Moens were selected

NEW ENGLAND SINGS! 2016

NECOM PRESENTS ITS BIENNIAL CHORAL CONCERTS ON SUNDAY 16 OCTOBER. STAND BY FOR ANOTHER AWARD WINNING CHORAL SPECTACULAR THAT WILL PUT ARMIDALE IN THE NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT.

magine hearing 800 K - Year 12 students from 26 regional schools and an 80-piece orchestra performing a breathtaking programme of Australian music, including two specially written commissions from composers Luke Byrne and Paul Jarman.

Sound like a huge undertaking? Not for the New England Conservatorium and AMTA (Armidale Music Teachers Association), who have been presenting this choral spectacular every two years since 2010, each one bigger and better than the last.

Preparations for New England Sings! are now in full swing, and it’s already looking to exceed the high bar that was set by New England Sings! when it won the national APRA/AMCOS Awards for Excellence in Music Education in 2012 and Excellence in Regional Music in 2014.

New England Sings! will present two concerts on Sunday 16 October at 11am and 2:30pm. The concert features many well-known songs, as well

as the new commissions for Combined Primary Schools Choirs and for the Combined Secondary Choir and Orchestra.

Luke Byrne’s commission for primary choirs pays homage to Armidale’s unique history and region.

Luke writes: “I came to Armidale to focus in on what I wanted to write for the Primary Choirs, and came away with vast amounts of material on the culture and geography of the New England - the dramatic landscapes of gorges and waterfalls, unique characters of individual towns, and life stories only hinted at on headstones in historic cemeteries.”

Luke’s commission captures the essence of the region in the three songs he composed Remarkable tells the story of Signor Vertelli’s amazing tightrope walk across Dangar Falls, Gostwyck touches on the history of the little chapel at Gostwyk outside Uralla, and Nightfires celebrates the stunning sunsets and our starry night skies.

Composer Paul Jarman was a very popular choice to write for the Combined Secondary Choir and Orchestra, and his choice of lyrics has already left a powerful impression on the students as he selected the inspirational poem Invictus, written

by William Ernest Henley in 1875.

Nelson Mandela carried this poem in his pocket throughout his 27 years of incarceration in South African prisons. Its stirring text: “I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul” is now universally recognised from the 2009 film Invictus, starring Morgan Freeman.

Paul writes, “I have wanted to set this poem to music for many years, but have never found the right project until the New England Sings! commission came along.”

Secondary students and teachers had an unforgettable first rehearsal in July when Paul introduced his new work, hot off the press. From the start, they loved the work and were the first to bring the notes on the page to life - their

performance will touch the heart and soul of all audience members.

Corinne Arter, Artistic Director for New England Sings! says, “Both composers have really captured the spirit of our community, and the students have responded so enthusiastically towards both works already.”

The weekly Transition to School programme at Newling Public School delivers an opportunity for a sustained early childhood experience at school and provides the best possible start to a child’s formal education.

his year Newling “Little Stars” Transition programme has been operating since April, and the students are now attending two full school days.

“Our Transition programme aims to make school, including the environment and the expectations, comfortable and familiar for incoming Kindergarten children,” states Newling School Principal Mr Murray Cox. “The Transition to School programme offers professionally planned school learning experiences over an extended period of time, unlike the traditional one or two Orientation days.”

The programme is specifically designed for preschool children and is based on the playbased philosophy of early childhood education.

The national curriculum framework Belonging, Being and Becoming: The Early Years Learning Framework for Australia has guided the design of the learning experiences provided.

hen did you first become interested in riding?

I suppose it was difficult for me not to become interested in motorcycle racing, as motorcycles and racing have been part of my family for as long as I can remember. When I was about five years old, my dad bought me a little motorbike and I used to ride on our farm with my brother, Lachie. I was amazed at his ability to ride a motorcycle and hoped that one day I could do what he was doing. We would spend hours riding around, and he would teach me what he knew.

What is your current ranking with the Superbikes, and where do you compete?

I am currently racing in two championships, the Swann Insurance Australasian Superbike Championship, and the Queensland Raceways FX Series, both promoted by Terry O’Neill. My first race meeting was at Sydney Motorsport

It’s an awesome bike to ride with plenty of power, and its riding position is one that reflects that of my dirt bike, which I ride at home (high handlebars and similar

Unforgettable moments in your racing career?

The most unforgettable moment in my short racing career would have to be, without a doubt, my first race at Sydney Motorsport Park. I was so nervous - it seemed like I was too young to be sitting on the grid with experienced motorcycle racers. I’ve been lucky enough to be mentored by some of Australia’s best riders, such as Mark Willis (500 cc Grand Prix motorcycle racer and Factory Suzuki rider), Russell Holland (from Australian

hat first encouraged your awareness of MND ... and tell us a bit more about the disease?

I first became aware of Motor Neurone Disease when a family member was diagnosed with it. When this opportunity became available, I decided it would be good to jump on board and see what we could do to assist in research for this disease. In the years since I first became aware of MND, the changes have been remarkable, and it would be wonderful if Armidale 205 could play a small part in continuing funding the research.

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a progressive, terminal neurological disease which does not discriminate; it does not matter who you are or how old you are - you can get this disease. There is no known cure or treatment. MND is the name given to a group of diseases in which the nerve cells (neurones) controlling the muscles that enable us to move, speak, breathe and swallow undergo degeneration and eventually die. A person’s senses and intellect are not affected. MND is a progressive, terminal neurological disease. There is no known treatment or cure.

Each day, in Australia, more than two people die from MND, and each day more than two people are diagnosed with MND. More alarmingly, the death rate for MND in Australia has risen 250%. In 1985, MND killed one in 500 Australians. In 2011, it killed one in 180 Australians.

ell us about Can Assist. How long you have been involved?

The Armidale Branch of Can Assist was formed in 1998 by a group of business and community people who had family members and friends with cancer, or had been on the journey themselves and knew the challenges facing country patients with a cancer diagnosis. Can Assist was formed in Sydney in 1955, to provide accommodation and support to country cancer patients who had to travel to the city for treatment.

This was initially provided through the Jean Colvin Hospital in Potts Point, where many of our local patients received wonderful care and support. This support has expanded to provide grass roots financial help, including transport, and household utility expenses such as power, gas and telephone.

We are not able to give direct money to patients, so we are responsible for organising the patients’ payments, i.e. paying their electricity accounts, gas bills, food vouchers, fuel vouchers, paying airfares, transport and whatever else is required. It is a very busy job for our Treasurer, Kerrie, and our executive who authorise each request; however, we do have a wonderful supportive team, and there is always a member on hand to help when necessary.

I joined Can Assist the year after it was formed, having been asked to join the organisation because of my workplace. At the time I was working in a medical practice and 36 new england focus.

seeing first-hand the difficulties patients were experiencing with the costs associated with having cancer in a country area. Since then, we do have more services available in our area, but many patients still have to travel to bigger centres for surgery and treatment.

How do you raise your money, and what is it used for?

We are a registered charity and operate under the guidelines of The Australian Charities and Not for Profit Commission, with a very hardworking committee who meet monthly.

We receive no government funding, so fundraising is our main avenue of funds.

We have been very blessed in the last couple of years to receive funding from many sporting bodies and service organisations, who have organised car rallies, golf days and charity auctions for us. Tour de Rocks has also been a wonderful support to our organisation and has helped with funding major costs involved with chemotherapy and medications not available on the PBS. Can Assist is extremely grateful to our wonderful business and community friends for their continued support of our Organisation.

he group of ten meets at the House with No Steps Armidale Hub from 10am - 2pm each Wednesday and Thursday.

The Life Skills group is currently focusing on topics such as travel training, relationships and money management, just to name a few. For the participants, it’s all about learning how to use these newly acquired skills in their day-to-day lives. The group sometimes splits into two to ensure everyone can maximise their learning. There is also an opportunity for individuals to get in touch with their creative side through art and crafts.

Life Skills is more than just learning. It’s also a great way to meet people and make new friends. Members regularly get together for

a night out at the pub, games nights, movie nights, swimming, and table tennis matches every Friday afternoon at the UNE. These friendships are really important to many of the individuals, as for some it’s the first time they’ve socialised with others in a group.

Jodi, one of the members in the group, loves going to Life Skills. She said, “House with No Steps is a fun place to be, and it is good for me to be out and about and meeting other people. I also like learning new things with the group.”

Recently, the group participated in an adapted Basic First Aid Training given by Jamie Day from New England North West First Aid & Defibrillation Training. The participants had a great time and also learnt some valuable First

Pathfinders will officially open Foster Care Week on 13th September, with a public event featuring international author and foster care advocate, Daryl Brougham.

Playing with Melbourne Tigers was amazing. I learned a lot from guys like Dmack, Anstey, Rashad Tucker, Corey Williams and Julius Hodge, Matt Burston and my favourite, coach Al Westover.

What is the training regime like?

I go to the gym about three times a week and also workout on the basketball court about four times a week, to stay sharp.

Weekends usually include a beach session with sprints and parachute workout. I try to do something every day. No days off!

You are also the captain of the Somali National Team. Do you travel back to Somalia often, and how is the level of playing there?

No, we don't actually go back to Somalia; we meet about four days before tournaments at the location of the tournament and train.

We don't have the funds to travel back, and I help pay my way with some support from the Somali community in Melbourne.

Is it an honour to be the captain of your nation’s team?

The position of captain, for my country is a great responsibility and a great honour, one that I take very seriously.

What makes a good captain?

The role of captain has its challenges, because you’re dealing with a lot of egos and personalities, and it requires a lot of patience and listening. You must be able to solve conflict on the fly and keep everyone on the same page.

On top of all that, you can’t take things people say personally and need to try not to be too sensitive.

Lead by example: that’s what Nathan Buckley told me at my time with Collingwood F.C, right before I played for my national team in 2014.

Homestead Saumarez Homestead has had a very busy winter this year, with several weddings, family celebrations and functions as well. Now that we are open all year round for grounds and garden visitors, we have also had a pleasing number of visitors during July and August.

he Saumarez Café reopens on Saturday 3rd September, and that is also when our guided tours of the house recommence on weekends and public holidays at 10:30am, 2pm and 3:30pm.

We also have some very special events coming up over the next few months.

30th Anniversary of Official Handover of Saumarez Homestead to the National Trust from the White Family This will be celebrated on Friday 2nd September at a private function for Saumarez volunteers and friends, as well as official guests and, of course, the White family.

Saumarez Homestead Volunteer Information Day 9:30am to 3:30pm, Saturday 3rd September. Several speakers will provide interesting information about Saumarez Homestead and its people. A highlight will be a talk by Anne Philp, granddaughter of F J White, titled “Saumarez Multi Generation Employee Families”. Anne will talk about families who worked at Saumarez for many years.

Opportunities for volunteering at Saumarez Homestead will also be outlined.

It will be followed by a delicious brunch of fruit, coffee, toast and croissants.

Early tour starts at 9am, with Brunch at 10:30am. Those who prefer a later tour can begin with brunch at 10:30am, before joining the second tour.

Heritage Rose Garden Saumarez Homestead guided tours and activities will be held in conjunction with the Australian Garden History Society on the weekend of 29th and 30th October.

NSW Reconciliation Council Exhibition Artworks from the annual Schools Reconciliation Challenge will be held in the Thomas House at Saumarez Homestead in November and December 2016.

L

et’s get a bit of history first. How long have you been designing, and where did you start?

I have been in the industry for nearly 18 years, and I studied and spent the first five years in inner city Brisbane, QLD. I worked for a small firm that focused on residential design, with some shop-fit design thrown in. I ended up second in charge in the office and worked there nearly five years. It was during that time that I discovered my passion for compact building design. About 10 years ago, I moved back to Armidale and started my own business.

We’ve heard you have some exciting plans for the future, and we’ll come to that in a minute. For now, tell us about Art Houses.

The Art House was a concept I came up with about seven - eight years ago. I’d been looking for a way to combine my passion for compact sustainable architecture with my love for visual arts. The Art House is a result of that. The Art House is a compact, sustainable art work that you can live in.

What that means is that it is a compact building - all wasted space is eliminated - that is designed around a single visual arts theme. And this theme comes from a painting I have created. The art theme flows through everything! Not only the external appearance, but the internal finishes, the murals on the walls, the linen, and even the crockery! I wanted people to live, eat and breathe visual arts, while experiencing the comfort of a compact sustainable home.

Now Art House One wasn’t a one-off project, was it? What else is happening in Armidale?

I’m glad you asked. There are very exciting things in store for Art Houses.

the next couple of months! Now the idea of Art Houses is that everyone is different! Every layout is different, and every art theme is different! Art House Two is very different to Art House One, but they share the same principles in that they are compact, sustainable art works you can live in.

Art House Two is a three bedroom - each with walk-in robes - two bathroom, open plan living area home. It also has a theatre room, walk-in pantry, parents’ retreat and office! The visual arts theme is based on soft fawns, greens, blues and oranges.

AND, the icing on the cake is … it’s made of shipping containers!!!

The construction of Art House Two will be followed heavily on Facebook, and it will be opened to the public again once it’s finished. And product manufacturers are getting excited about it too, with Blum, Cemintel and Bradford all coming on board to support the project. These companies make great products, and folks will be able to see how they are used.

All this will be happening on the western end of Erskine Street, on the northern side.

Signs will go up as we get closer to the build starting.

You said that exciting things are in store for Art Houses. What else is happening?

Art House One was never intended to be a one-off project. It was a prototype for a whole range of Art Houses that I wanted to design and build across Australia. The whole project will be called The National Art House Trail and will be a tourist trail across Australia that both Australian and international tourists can stay in. Each Art House will also have an art studio

attached that local and travelling artists can rent for one month at a time, with the agreement that the people staying in the Art House will be able to view a

working art studio in action and have the opportunity to buy art works from the artist.

This will give people a unique holiday experience, and there is currently nothing like in Australia. It is ultimate immersion in compact sustainable architecture and visual arts. And each location will offer a different experience.

The building of Art House Two will be used as a platform for The National Art House Trail and the crowd funding that will take place to help develop the trail. Art House Two will most likely be sold after the open houses to help fund the trail, and crowd funding will be taking place later in the year. This funding will go towards buying land in the Port Macquarie area, to make the official start for the trail.

Contributors will get the opportunity to get in early for holidays in Art House Three, get their names in Art House Three or even get themselves a copy of the painting that will be the theme for Art House Three.

So as you can see, there are some very exciting times ahead for Art Houses, and it started in Armidale!

Twenty years on, tell the readers about how it all started … In September 1996 we purchased Armidale Mower and Chainsaw Centre. We soon recognised we had to change the direction of the business and search for different products to enable the business to move forward.

We redesigned the workshop, cleaned the premises up, and bit by bit have grown our business to where it is today.

Our objective when we went into business was to provide a high standard of customer service in all areas of our business - spares, sales and repairs and at the same time, we had a focus on bettering our own future and our three daughters’, who were aged 10 and four (twins). Now 20 years on, our daughters have all grown up.

Over the years, the girls have worked and helped within our business.

Julie owned her own business, a secretarial/bookkeeping service for over 15 years and worked for a number of local businesses during this time. When we purchased Armidale Mower and Chainsaw Centre, Kevin Kingdom was employed; we continued to employ Kevin, and he has been a very loyal staff member for the last 20 years.

We thank him for this. Mark O’Brien joined our business in 2003; Mark has also brought extensive knowledge to our business, as he previously worked at LW Burgess. Mark has been a very

Tell us how you have seen the industry change over the years. When we first purchased Armidale Mowers in 1996, there were six businesses doing similar trade in town; over the years, the numbers have halved. The industry has changed so much over the years. With our suppliers - some have gone, and some are going from strength to strength. Online shopping, cheaper products on the market, bulk stores, products changing due to emission laws, cordless products have become quite popular in our industry particularly those not having to mix fuel, with no emissions, and quiet to use. In 2006 we became the local Stihl dealer; we have just celebrated 10

years with STIHL. For those who haven’t visited your store, besides quality mowers and chainsaws, what other services to do you offer? At Armidale Mower and Chainsaw Centre we only specialise in Outdoor Power Equipment (OPE) and providing service in this industry and not dabbling in other areas not relevant to our industry. We have highly qualified and experienced staff with a combined experience of 123 years, extensive workshop and mechanical expertise for repairing chainsaws, mowers, ride ons, pumps, generators, and all other outdoor equipment. We all have extensive product knowledge, and provide quality brands - STIHL, Masport Mowers, Greenfield Ride Ons, Cox Ride Ons, Bob-Cat Mowers. Tell us about why you have decided to move? We really needed more space. As a growing business, we are continually taking on more work; the more work you do, the more space is needed for fabrication within the factory. It’s a great chance to spread our wings, to allow for more state of the art machinery, workspaces and storage, which meets our ever growing needs.

Sounds like a much bigger place. Will you incorporate a new showroom? Yes, we sure will. It’s the plan to have a showroom displaying all of our large range of products. Hopefully by the end of the year we will find time to set it up and have it open for our customers to select styles and features. Sometimes it can be hard to

visualise what a product will look like built, so we feel that it is a vital part of the experience. We have painted and have new flooring in preparation for the fit out.

Will you be offering any new services? We will be offering the same business and services.

However, we will be looking abroad to bring more work in, and we will be reaching out further to out of town builders to take on what they have to offer.

Thinking Employment & Discrimination – with Navneet Mullee (Solicitor)

EMPLOYMENT AND DISCRIMINATION

I

n recent months the Australian community has been faced with the prevalence of anti-Islamic beliefs causing some Australian citizens to think and act antagonistically towards Muslims and the Islamic faith. Often the attitude taken is born out of ignorance. It is necessary for the Australian community to consider our hegemonic values and current laws that condemn racial discrimination and harassment as abhorrent and unlawful in Australia.

The following scenarios illustrate matters that may constitute unlawful discrimination in the workplace: Scenario 1: Miss Z is a Chinese woman who applied for the position of retail assistant. The potential employer was impressed with her communication skills during a phone interview and she consequently progressed to the next round of face-to-face interviews.

When arriving at the interview the employer observed that Miss Z was Chinese and immediately informed Miss Z that the position had already been filed. He asked her to leave without interviewing her.

Scenario 2: Mr Singh is a Sikh. As a part of his religion he is required to keep and maintain a beard. He works at a fruit packing plant and is informed by his employer that beards are banned for health and safety reasons and is told he must shave off his beard or lose his job. It is however company policy that a facemask may be used to address safety and health concerns.

Both scenarios are examples of unlawful discrimination, albeit one is direct and the other indirect. It is unlawful to discriminate against an individual on the basis of their race or religion.

It is necessary to ensure that all employees are treated equally; that the same rules and policies apply for all employees; and, that racially abusive comments are avoided in the workplace at all times.

In addition to provisions contained in the Fair Work Act 2009, there are various laws that operate on both a State and Federal level that specifically focus on matters concerning unlawful discrimination both within and outside of employment. The Australian Human Rights Commission Act 1986 prevents unlawful

discrimination on the basis of race, colour, sex, religion, political opinion and nationality (amongst other things).

In New South Wales the Discrimination Act 1991 generally overlaps and prohibits the same type of discrimination. Despite the overlap there may be gaps in the protections offered on Federal and State levels and as such the exemptions and exceptions afforded must be carefully considered given there are no uniform laws.

Outside of the workplace the Racial Discrimination Act applies preventing harassment and racial hatred. “Racial hatred” includes but is not limited to racially offensive: 1. material on the internet.

2. material, comments or images in print media or other publication.

3. speeches or abusive comments in a public place, including shops, the workplace, parks, transport, schools and sporting events.

This Act gives effect to Australia’s obligations under the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.

Current legislation aims to balance the right to freedom of speech with the right to live free from racial harassment or vilification.

Accordingly, under the Act the following things that may cause offence are lawful provided it is done “reasonably” and “in good faith”: a. an artistic work or performance (i.e. a play including reflective attitudes by a character) b. a statement, publication, discussion or debate made for genuine academic or scientific purposes c. making a fair and accurate report on a matter of public interest (i.e. a fair report in a newspaper about racially offensive conduct).
