Breanna McFayden started dancing at the age of three, as like many little girls she just loved to dance.

She was lucky enough to be trained by Colette Brazier, Principal of Australian Dance Enterprises, who fostered her love of dance. Breanna has also had the experience of learning from so many amazing teachers and choreographers, both in the North West District and Greater Sydney.

McFayden dancer ow long have you lived in Armidale? Tell us about your family ...

I was born and raised in Armidale. I attended two fantastic schools, Ben Venue for primary and Duval for high school. Both my mum and dad are locals and still work in Armidale. I have a younger brother and sister who both also reside in Armidale. I moved to Sydney in 2013 and currently reside in the lovely Sutherland Shire (it’s not as lovely as Armidale, though).

When and why did you first become involved with dancing?

I started dancing at the age of three, as like many little girls I just loved to dance. I was lucky enough to be trained by Colette Brazier, Principal of Australian Dance Enterprises, who fostered my love of dance. I have honestly been so lucky to have been able to learn from so many amazing teachers and choreographers, both in the North West District and Greater Sydney. I had the most amazing opportunities as a dancer growing up; I was a part of the NSW public schools dance ensemble, participated in the Schools Spectacular, participated in dance festivals at regional and state levels, choreographed for creative arts festivals and fashion parades, attended many workshops with professional choreographers

and amazing teachers around NSW, performed in numerous eisteddfods and met some amazing lifelong friends. Still today at uni I am experiencing amazing opportunities with dance, allowing me to network with some amazing mentors and choreographers in the hope to pass on these experiences to my future students.

How is dance as a subject in schools different to studio dance?

People often think dance is a bludge subject; however, this is not the case. Dance is available to students to select as an elective from Years 7 - 10. The syllabus is an integrated study of practices of performance, composition and appreciation. During the HSC there is also a major work. I guess you could say the main difference is that studio dance serves for recreational practices for fun, fitness and friendships; whereas, at school the study is purely dance as an artform. However, these days many studios including ADE offer exam work, where students are able attain certificates in dance. I was lucky enough to be able to study dance at school and complete my certificates in Jazz and Ballet. These experiences have definitely aided me in my studies at university.

How do students benefit from dance?

Dance is more than just a form of physical activity particularly in the school syllabus, where the focus is dance as an artform. Dance education provides countless benefits for students, such as developing physical fitness, appreciation of the body, coordination, flexibility, along with deeper appreciation of cultures and diversity. Students also have the opportunity to develop friendships, confidence, and the power of expression and creativity.

Who inspires you?

Colette - she has fostered my love for dance, but has taught and encouraged me to be the best teacher I can be. The students I am lucky enough to work with inspire me more and more each time; their dedication, passion and results inspire me to provide them with the best learning experiences and opportunities.

Who has been involved getting you to this level?

My mum and dad have not only funded all my tuition growing up, but have encouraged me to do everything and take every opportunity. My biggest supporters would be my grandparents; they have not missed a perfor-

mance, and growing up often took me away to Sydney to dance. But the biggest thank you needs to go to all my teachers I have had, both at school, particularly Jane Cullen and Bindy Hodgson, two of the most dedicated PE/ DANCE teachers ever, and at Australian Dance Enterprises.

What are your other interests?

When I am not studying or working, I love to bake and cook, and I love catching up with my friends near and far. I also love yoga! If I wasn’t finishing a degree, I would be travelling; I can’t wait to see the world. I also take every chance I get try to watch dance performances, whether it be the ballet, Sydney Dance Company, a musical, or an independent company.

Plans for the future?

My ultimate goal is to move back to the country, particularly the New England area, and create a programme that allows regional rural dance teachers and students both in schools and studios access to a wider range of resources. I sometimes feel that students in the country can be disadvantaged, and I feel that every student should have access to quality education, regardless of where they live and financial situation. Ultimately I hope to be the best teacher I can be, pass on my love of art of dance and provide as many opportunities to students living in regional areas.

Do you remember having the amazing adventures of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie read to you as a kid? Nicholas Hiatt plays Snugglepot in the fabulous stage adventure of May Gibb’s classic story, which drops into the Capitol Theatre, Tamworth, on August 12. The timeless magic of this classic Australian fairy tale will delight both children and their parents! i Nicholas. You've had a variety of experience with both on stage and screen performances since you graduated from NIDA in 2013.

What's been the most rewarding aspect of playing May Gibbs’ character, Snugglepot, in the stage adaptation of her wonderful books?

One of the most rewarding aspects of this role has been the sheer joy of playing a character that stimulated my own imagination as a kid. I first had the book read to me in school back in Perth when I was eight years old, and here I am in this new production bringing it to life for another whole generation of children. That’s something pretty special. I’d like to think that eight year old me would be really excited.

Also, the response from children is incredible. Many are attending the theatre for the first time in their lives. They’re really the most honest and appreciative of audiences and as a performer, that can be really invigorating.

It’s brought back a lot of my own cherished memories of going to the theatre as a child and reminded me of why I got into this career in the first place.

How would you describe your character?

Snugglepot is a gumnut who lives in the Australian bush on a high branch in a tree with his foster brother, Cuddlepie, who’s also his best friend. Snugglepot is definitely the bigger rascal of the two brothers. He’s courageous, adventurous, joyful and kind. He’s never afraid to jump in and try something new, although often it’s his impulsiveness that gets the brothers into trouble. He also loves to dance!

Cuddlepie. Without giving too much away, tell us a bit about the story that unfolds in this stage adaptation ...

This show follows the first book in the series. It all starts with Snugglepot deciding he desperately wants to see these incredible and mysterious things called “Humans”. He convinces a reluctant Cuddlepie to join him on an adventure through the Australian Bush and on the way, they team up with the outrageous Mr Lizard and get into a lot of trouble.

Many children (and adults) will be familiar with the "Big, Bad Banksia Man" character - the villain of May Gibbs’ stories. Will audiences get to see this villain in action ... and just how scary is he?

The Banksia Man is the scariest, most terrifying character in the whole show! Well, almost … Mrs Snake is even scarier! Then again, maybe I just find them scary because I’m a grown up … Children are much braver.

The costumes in the show look gorgeous.

Who was responsible for their creation?

Credit there goes to our costume designer, Matthew Aberline, who has worked in everything from opera to feature film. He told me a lot of his inspiration came from 1920s fashion. He has created a very grungy, tactile feel for all the costumes, grounded in a sense of elegance and nostalgia whilst still conjuring a sense of May Gibbs’ beautiful illustrations.

I should mention that apart from looking fantastic, they’re also practical. With the cast doing so much climbing and tumbling all over the stage during such a long tour, these costumes are built to last! My gumnut hat is very cute but after a three-show day, I sure am grateful for those kneepads.

around 1918. Why do you think these stories are still so popular today?

I think these stories are still popular because kids love the idea of magical creatures and fairies living in the garden, and May Gibbs managed to tap into that.

All the fairy tales she grew up with were set in Europe and even a hundred years on, a lot of the stories Australians grow up with don’t necessarily take place in a world they recognise. But May Gibbs put that fantasy world into our own backyard.

It’s also a generational thing. My grandparents grew up with these books and read them to my mother before she introduced them to me. They’re the perfect books to read to very young children.

What age group do you feel would get the most enjoyment out of the show?

The show is pitched towards children aged 5 to 10, but we’ve had children even younger come along and really love it. But many parents and grandparents experienced these stories as children, so I think this show really connects to entire families.

Travelling more in Australia is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. A few years ago I returned home after nearly a year in Europe singing on a cruise ship and realised just how little of my own country I’d seen.

I can’t think of a better way to do it than by touring a show based on such an iconic Australian book.

Who of you hasn't been in the city and gone to order a basic round of beers, and one minute you’re standing in line wondering why you’ve doubledup on a shout, and the next you’re smacked in the face by the judging eyes of a hipster bartender who is anticipating a prompt transaction?

You’re paralysed. Your order immediately changes from four lagers and a pack of plain crisps to the panic purchase of four vodka Red-Bulls, a pack of Tally-Hos and a brochure for the best tattoo artist in the inner-west.

We reckon there are a few buzz words to help you navigate the murky underworld of skinny jeans, pencil thin moustaches, manicured beards and craft beer that will make your experience that little more enjoyable and potentially save you from an expensive tattoo removal.

THE DICK FAMILY SETTLED IN PORT MACQUARIE IN 1841

ell us a bit about yourself and how you came to call the New England area home.

1952 - that’s when I was “hatched”. I retain vivid memories of my early childhood, when we lived in a small cottage in Sth Horton Street, (long gone, like the rest of the old Port Macquarie).

I hated my “bib and brace” duds that my mother decked me out in, so I used to un-hitch them and take off up the main street, baring my ar*e to all at four years. My mum threatened me with the strap, but she couldn’t catch me ... but I had to go home sometime. My family nicknamed me “barea*se” (the original Port streaker).

I have an innate sense of belonging to a once beautiful coastal town where very little now remains. The ‘60s changed so much.

Our family moved from town to Windmill Hill in approximately 1957; my new playground became the beaches and headlands, discovering old mine shafts, fishing boats and sheds. That’s when I started to let my mind wander back to how the old Port began.

Listening to my dad and his brothers and sisters (11 of them) talking about their experiences of growing up in this decrepit old town ... Talk of convicts then wasn’t discussed 12 new england focus.

After my schooling years, I started out as an apprentice sign-writer and artist.

After four years I took off to Sydney, at the end of 1971. I left for a journey of some two years overseas in the mid ‘70s, travelling overland through 40 countries, mainly Africa, Europe, The Middle East and Asia and being a surfer all my life, I surfed at Jefferys Bay and Sri Lanka. I was away from my old town for approximately seven years.

When I returned, I became a student of Graeme Inson’s in Sussex Street, Sydney. He was a wonderful teacher and brilliant tonal painter of the Max Meldrum technique.

How has your art progressed from the early days to now?

In the middle ‘80s, my work started to change with the use of distortion and a more vibrant palate - “expressionism”. Come the late ‘90s, and my themes had changed to a more broader scope. I work with acrylics mainly, which allows for re-work almost instantaneously. I was painting mostly landscapes, the ocean, then moved on to

figurative themes, then narratives circling around historic elements.

In the ‘80s I was a finalist in both the Archibald and the Moran National Portrait Prize, the only time I have entered competitions; the Archibald was a “circus”. The self portrait that I completed for the Moran was purchased, and it forms part of the Tweed Regional Gallery collection.

What is the theme of your latest exhibition?

This is the second exhibition I have done at the Armidale Gallery, the last being in 2009.

They are a voluntary run organisation, friendly and obliging.

The theme of this collection of works painted over the last 10 to 15 years is basically an Introspective.

At least 12 of the 22 pieces have been reworked to achieve a more intense outlook on the subjectivity.

THE ABC STAFF PARTY is a take on a raucous party; everyone is completely “out of it” - make of it what you will. It was painted about 15 years ago and always gets a laugh - probably reminds the viewer of old friends and old times etc. I painted it in the early

hours of the morning in my studio at Red Hill, where we lived for approximately 19 years.

Like a lot of my work, it was done without reference (straight from “the melon”).

When and where will the exhibition be held?

The Armidale Gallery is in the Mall, Beardy Street (upstairs). I will be occupying two rooms. It commences on Saturday 30th July, runs to the 25th of August, Monday to Friday, 10am to 5pm, and Saturday 10am to 1pm.

Like all previous shows that I have done, it is self-funded.

Can you give us an insight into the stories behind some of your works that will be showcased?

THE FAMILY PORTRAIT is one of my works painted in a night time session. I am dancing with the demon, personified as the demon drink; the empties are at my feet and the rest of the family are startled onlookers. The moon is shining, representing the lunatic in us all, and our cottage at Red Hill is in the background ... A most humorous piece, don’t you think?

What is your favoured subject to work with?

Any future projects in the pipeline?

I’m still in the throes of setting up my studio here in Walcha. We chose to come and live in a small historic town, not far from our children who live in Port Macquarie, Newcastle and Sydney. Heritage has been a strong key to my life; I was the main initiator in two large heritage projects in Port Macquarie - the Mid North Coast Maritime Museum project and the Douglas Vale Historic Vineyard, which took up 10 years of my time as a volunteer organiser. Life membership was bestowed upon me by both organisations.

My great-grandfather, John Suart Dick, established a tannery here in Walcha back in the late 1870s. Two of my great-uncles and a great-aunt, including Thomas Dick the renowned photographer, were born here.

John Dick supplied leather to the railway contractors at that time. My grandfather, Charles, was born in Tamworth. John’s family grew as he moved to Armidale and subsequently Glen Innes (11 children); his wife died after giving birth to their youngest

daughter, Jessie, who died in infancy, and both are buried in the cemetery at Glen Innes.

He witnessed his eldest daughte, Lizzie, marry Daniel McLaren in Armidale, then boarded the train with all his children to Sydney and then by steamer back to Port Macquarie, where he established the oyster industry, later remarrying and having another four sons ... A real saga, if ever there was one.

I will be completing new works in the future based on the New England territory, where I have been seeking out all the gravelled back-roads for inspiration.

hat was the catalyst for moving to Armidale?

For work and the city.

I fell in love looking at pictures of Armidale! My wife, Nancy, and I also made a decision that we needed change for the family. Our sole purpose is to give a better life to the children in education and in an environment which is clean and safe. I am grateful that I found this job and great city.

Where were you born and living before moving to Armidale?

In Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia - formerly known as Jesselton, North Borneo.

REGIONAL SCHOOLS A new generation of artists are exhibiting their work in this year’s University of New England Student Acquisitive Art Prize (UNESAP) in the annual Let’s Hang It! exhibition at the New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM), from Friday 29 July to Sunday 14 August.

he competition, which has provided recognition and exposure for emerging artists since 2004, is a great opportunity for young people,” said NERAM’s Director Robert Heather. “This competition inspires students by offering the chance to present their work in a fabulous public art space, where it can hang alongside that of recognised professional artists.”

“There have been a number of studies which have shown the ongoing benefits to school students of being involved in creative pursuits like visual arts,” said Mr Heather. “This programme provides schools around the region with an opportunity to display the work of their students in an art

museum and come to see the results here in Armidale.”

The success of UNESAP has built steadily over the past twelve years, with a fantastic and overwhelming response from schools.

UNESAP and the annual Let’s Hang It! exhibition has become an exciting part of the annual calendar for many schools throughout regional NSW. A panel of experts selected the works to be shown at the Let’s Hang It! Exhibition in Armidale, and award-winning guest artist Leah Bullen is making the final selection of winners.

“Any school can submit art works to UNESAP on behalf of its students, and the number of entries from each school is not limited,” said Mr Heather. “This year there

were over 643 individual entries from 46 schools across regional New South Wales, including local schools in Armidale, Uralla, Walcha, Kentucky, Glen Innes, Dorrigo and all over New England.”

“UNESAP is also a great opportunity for NERAM to work closely with the staff and students at the University of New England, the leading tertiary educational body in regional New South Wales. The four first prize winning artworks then become part of the UNE’s permanent art collection and will be on display throughout the university campus.”

hat brought you to Armidale, and what do you love most about living here?

Armidale is a unique town as far as the population mix and the location is concerned. At the time when I was looking for a job as a staff specialist at the local hospital, there was a dire need for a physician with different skills who could offer services in the area of Geriatrics and General Medicine. When I contacted the then General Manager of the hospital, she was quite keen for me to fly in and have a look around.

What do you love most about Armidale?

The people, with the multicultural set up - a mix of very unique nationalities because of the university. The Medical School, which has opportunities for education and research. As I said, people who are very understanding and receptive to anything which is innovative and also tend to honour people who are quite committed to their work.

What do you specialise in?

Basic qualifications are in General Medicine.

I have specialised training in Geriatrics and Endocrinology, but in a rural set up like Armidale you have to be multi skilled and it is need of the hour, where you could turn into a Cardiologist, Nephrologist or a Neurologist based on the type of cases which come through the emergency department.

My inspiration is a long list of people right from the time I entered medical school, but to thank a few from the recent part of my professional career, I would say, the late Dr Michael Price, who was a Geriatrician at the Westmead Hospital; Professor Susan Kurrle, who was an inspiration and a great pleasure to work with in Hornsby Kuringgai Health Service; Dr John Flynn, my colleague at the Armidale Hospital; and Dr Gary Baker, my mentor and guide in Armidale.

When not being a busy physician, what would we find you doing?

That is an interesting question. I love travelling, which is actually not good for a busy doctor, but I sneak in opportunities to travel both in Australia and worldwide and also to my home country, India. I love cooking, which gives me an opportunity to deliver dinners to friends. I love outdoor activities, which include bushwalking and also 4WD tours.

Plans for the future?

At the moment after an extended medical leave, with the amount of love and concern shown by the community, I plan to dedicate the greater part of the rest of my professional life to Armidale for the betterment of health in the community and also be part of hopefully a better structure which would befit the needs of the community in this vast ranging area.

Food for Men No. 1: Oysters Could there be something to the legend that oysters are the food of love? Well, it’s true that just a few oysters each day will deliver a full day’s supply of the antioxidant mineral zinc. Zinc is involved in hundreds of body processes, from producing DNA to repairing cells.

You can also get your daily recommended dose of 11 milligrams a day by eating other shellfish,

1. Drink water. One for one. This is a sure fire way to avoid a hangover the next day. It’s no secret that drinking water can help deflect that pounding AM headache (pretty much the opposite of a good morning).

2. Chow down. Just because beer has calories, doesn’t mean it counts as dinner.

Drinking on an empty stomach will allow alcohol to absorb faster, so try getting in a good meal with lots of protein before breaking out the bottle.

8. Grab some potassium. When dehydrated, we lose not only water, but electrolytes, too.

Gain ‘em back by snacking on potassium-rich foods like bananas or spinach.

9. Scramble eggs. Eggs contain taurine, which has been shown to reverse liver damage caused by a night of heavy boozing. Scramble them up with lots of veggies for added antioxidant power!

3. Keep it light. Darker drinks like red wine or rum contain congeners (substances produced during fermentation), which may contribute to causing hangovers. Skip the whiskey in favour of vodka or a glass of white wine!

10. Sip ginger tea. Hangovers can sometimes come with a side of upset stomach. To settle that tummy, brew a warm mug of ginger tea. Ginger has been shown to help combat nausea.

4. Stay classy. More expensive liquors contain less filler congeners - a cause for headaches. So pass on the well liquor and take it up a notch with some top-shelf booze.

AND THE SPECTACULAR WATERFALLS WAS AN ADDED BONUS.

T

ourism figures for the year end 2015 have been recently released

by Destination NSW. These figures show a very healthy growth, with accommodation revenue up 14.9% for Armidale when compared to 2014.

This is significant when compared to the growth in the New England North West region of just 2.8%. With this in mind, it is therefore exciting that the New England High Country has recently signed a partnership with Bauer Media, who will continue to assist us in the production and distribution of our New England High Country Tourism marketing campaigns.

The next campaign, due to commence in spring, is an Adventure Touring campaign, targeting a younger/active caravanning and camping market who are looking for excitement such as mountain biking and bushwalking, whilst enjoying the wineries, museums and excellent local produce our region has to offer. To capture the beautiful autumnal colours, Bauer Media were in region to film the videos in autumn. We hope to share these with you once we have a finished product. Who is the Expo targeted at?

People with disability and their networks, family and carers. The aim of the Expo is to provide information about increasing independence and having the best possible quality of life.

For those unfamiliar with the Disability Expo, what’s it all about?

The “My Future, My Choice” Community Links Expo has been an annual event on the Armidale calendar for nearly ten years. The expo offers a place to showcase organisations that provide services to increase independence and quality of life for people of all ages. The expo is called a “Community Links” expo and as the title says, aims to link people in the community to a wide array of products, services and innovative technology to enhance a person’s life.

Is it just held in Armidale?

This particular expo is. There is another disability expo in Tamworth - this one is Armidale and the surrounding districts, Guyra, Glen Innes, and surrounding towns.

What can people expect?

There will be over fifty stalls this year.

CAREVAN IS A SPECTACULAR NEW INITIATIVE, JUST ABOUT TO LAUNCH IN ARMIDALE. FOCUS

TALKS WITH CHRIS COLE, WHO TELLS US ALL ABOUT THIS GREAT NEW ADDITION TO THE NEW ENGLAND … or those of us who don’t know, what is “Carevan”?

Carevan is a community run “soup kitchen” that supplies meals to the homeless, needy and less fortunate people in our community. It is run by volunteers, who on several nights a week take their “van” out into the community. The van will be set up in various locations in Armidale, depending on need.

Meals are then served to whoever turns up at the van.

Chairs and trestle tables are set up, and everyone and anyone is invited to join in for the meal.

We are attempting to (as similar to Carevan Albury) get schools involved in preparing and supplying the meals. Then once each term, these students are invited to come out with the van and witness “the fruits of their generosity” by serving and enjoying a meal with the Carevan guests.

This acts as a very compelling sense of community for these school students and is an introduction to the act of volunteering.

How did the idea come about?

Dr John Brabant is an orthodontist in Albury and saw the need in that city for feeding the homeless and needy. He is a good friend of local dentist Chris Cole.

After a public meeting in 2015, there was a bit of hiatus, but the drive from Liz Williams continued the impetus and now a committee has been formed and a van has been purchased. It is on its way, and Carevan 32 new england focus.

What benefit does Carevan have for the community?

This is manyfold. The primary effect is that many people and families have a solid, wholesome meal provided for them. Naturally, that is of great benefit. An increased sense of community on different levels; first for the people who are being provided the meals is the fact that, “Hey, somebody cares”. For the volunteers, it is the satisfaction of helping, but on a more subtle level it is the fact that the community is pulling together. As I said before, high schools are involved, and all of them have shown a positive commitment.

Their year nine home economic students prepare the meals, and once a term get out and witness some real life and see for the most part that they are not that badly off in their own lives. From John Brabant’s experience, this can have quite a profound, positive effect ... Again, building the sense of community for Armidale.

How can people get involved? Volunteer?

Volunteers - we love them. We are truly looking for helpers for the many tasks that are carried out. There are the team leaders for the designated night drivers and people helping with the serving and cleaning

up. For those who think they could not commit to a physical job, they may want to donate some funds, because naturally in any enterprise there are always ongoing costs. We have already had some great and generous sponsors come forward with money and equipment.

Tell us about the new equipment and how you acquired it?

Well as I said, John Brabant commenced his operation in Albury, which is a twin city to Wodonga.

They originally purchased a van for each, but found they didn’t need the second van, so we were able to purchase the virtually fully fitted van from them.

We will only need a few larger items, like a generator, fridge, dishwasher, etc. for the van. John has also been in commercial talks with IGA as to what they can do in order to become more involved with the community. This is great timing, because they announced that they will put forward the monies for our van, “Carevan Armidale”. This is fabulous news and a great impetus to our programme. Grant McCarroll Ford is generously providing a tow vehicle and towbar. So we are away.

NO STEPS THE NATIONAL DISABILITY INSURANCE SCHEME (NDIS) RECENTLY LAUNCHED IN THE NEW ENGLAND REGION ON 1 JULY 2016. IT’S AN EXCITING TIME, AS LOCAL PEOPLE WITH A DISABILITY BEGIN THEIR MEETINGS WITH THE NATIONAL DISABILITY INSURANCE AGENCY (NDIA) PLANNERS AND START TO TRANSITION THEIR FUNDING.

f you don’t have your NDIS plan yet, House with No Steps can help guide you through the application process.

Then once your application is approved, they can also provide a whole range of disability services under the scheme.

House with No Steps already have extensive experience as a registered NDIS service provider in the launch and early roll-out sites in NSW, Qld and the ACT. So far they have supported over 500 people to transition to the NDIS. One of these people is Nick.

Nick is a fun loving 18 year old man from Canberra who has a great sense of humour, loves rugby, and is a huge Brumbies supporter.

“Nick’s a good natured, caring young man, and he just happens to have a disability,” said Tanya, Nick’s mum.

Nick started his preplanning with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in November 2014. He chose House with No Steps to be his disability service provider and hasn’t looked back

since.

C

he practice of producing art, whether it be painting, drawing or colouring is a powerful therapeutic tool in the treatment of mental illness. This is amply shown by the recent success of colouring books. It may also take the form of singing, playing guitar, or even the beating of an African drum. Its practice is calming and meditative, yet still one of concentration - a non-threatening practice in which to express your feelings ... One of being in the zone. It’s a vehicle in which to re-establish confidence, reignite imagination, re-instill self-worth and an opportunity to enjoy life again. Art at its best is a commentary, a critique, and challenging of contemporary life and society. Art is also a perfect platform in which to raise awareness, education, discussion and understanding about the disability of mental illness.

In response to this, an artist run Initiative called “Run With It” has been established in Armidale, one of eight state wide. The project is directed by Accessible Arts, a peak art and disability organisation, in partnership with Beyond Empathy and Arts North West and funded by the Lifetime Care Support Authority.

The initiative supports a creative art group for people with either a physical or mental health disability. Carers, family or friends who support people living with a disability are also included in the project.

How long have you owned your own business?

Electair New England has been up and running since May 2015.

Tell us about your services?

We offer a wide variety of services here. Kris and I are both licensed electricians, and I also have an A/C licence.

We do all A/C installs and repairs, gas central heating, heat transfer kits, also everything electrical can be catered for, including renovations, re-wires, switchboard upgrades, stoves, hot water systems, heat transfer kits, LED lighting upgrades, just to name a few - pretty much the lot!

What do you love most about what you do?

There are a lot of things I like about what I do. You get to meet a wide variety of people for one, and I generally like walking away from a job knowing that, for example, I have repaired a fault or installed a light and have a satisfied customer.

Plans for the future?

As for future plans, I would like to see the business grow a bit larger and expand into different trades.

With this, I can offer a wider array of trade options for all of my customers.

Previous to Harvey Norman, I have worked in many retail businesses over the last 25 years.

What is the most satisfying part of your job?

What's the most satisfying part of your role? The most satisfying part of my role is assisting my staff to find the right solutions for our customers’ needs, rather than purely focusing on “what is the cheapest price“. We like to focus on what is the best solution at the best price.

Every Saturday morning at Harvey Norman Armidale, we have a charity barbecue where myself and the other two franchisees provide all the sausages and bread for the organisation involved. The organisation provides the manpower and keeps the profits for the day to help them with their fundraising.

Super Moto has been in business in one form or another for almost 40 years, and there have been some massive changes over those years not only in the business structure, but also how business is now conducted and the array of models and machines available.

I think the most satisfying part of the business is getting to know our customers and being able to satisfy their machinery needs with the right machine or part for the right job. And the return business; we are now dealing in some cases with third generations of farmers right down from the grandparents to the grandchildren, and it’s great strong.

How does Super Moto support the community?

Super Moto has always supported many sporting clubs and schools, as well as the many good causes that you get asked to help out with - like raising money for sick or injured loved ones or friends. We always try to help in some way, and it is a nice thing to do to help someone in need. hen did Dooners first begin as a business, and why?

My dad (Eris), if you have not heard of him, came to Armidale from Sydney in 1956 as a relief manager of a furniture store. He worked for the shop’s parent company in Sydney.

- OWEN’S EARTHMOVING NEW ENGLAND How long have you owned your own business, and what prompted you to do so?

Owen’s Earthmoving New England was founded in the beginning of 2009 and has been operating for approximately eight years. My involvement in the earthmoving and land improvement industry, however, began many years prior to this, when I was just seven years of age. In my youth I can recall various experiences of spending time in and around machinery and also became proficient at driving a Caterpillar D7 bulldozer in the vicinity of the Uralla shire. This learned skill led to managing and working in a full-time capacity for my family around southern Queensland and western New South Wales.

My engagement in earthworks has varied, from building roads to subdivisions, cleaning dams to building new ones for the duration of approximately 20 years. I have also been fortunate

enough to work in and around the New England area and have thoroughly enjoyed liaising with clientele to achieve their visions for land improvement. After a while it was suggested from clientele that I should start operating my own business. This prompted my decision to take the next step, thus leading to the start of Owen’s Earthmoving New England.

Initially, I was contracting to local farmers, operating their earthmoving machinery. As the demand for work grew, the opportunity then presented to own and operate the machinery that I was working with at local job sites.

Tell us about your services ...

Several areas that Owen’s Earthmoving New England specialises in include: New earth wall constructed dams for domestic and rural use; Dam de-silting;

Dam enlargements and reconstruction; Erosion control; Fence line clearing and stick raking; Access trails.

What do you love most about what you do?

I would have to say not many people get the chance to change their office every day. It is one of the aspects of earthmoving I love. Every day your surroundings vary. You are given the opportunity to look out over the wondrous scenery New England has to offer. This never fails to surprise me.

Meeting many different people and helping clients to achieve the desired outcome that they require also gives me great personal satisfaction.

I gain great satisfaction from seeing the work completed for the clients of my business.

Who inspires you and why?

My clients, my father and previous work colleagues all inspire me. One specifically, whom I

worked alongside for many years and who trained and helped me refine the required skills needed in the earthmoving industry. My clients inspire me mostly, as I am helping them achieve their needs.

My father is a great source of inspiration, as I have watched him over the years be successful in the industry. My mentor, Ross Oxenbridge, has taught me most of my earthworks skills, and I continue to hold him in high esteem.

Plans for the future?

My plans for the future include the continual operation of the business in and around the New England area. Expansion beyond this area has been considered if the need presents. The hiring of further, experienced staff and the addition of machinery will also be a consideration that coincides with the growth of the business and the expansion into new areas.

emind us when the company first began and the journey ‘til now? After leaving Australia Post in the early 1980s, I bought a service station and at that time also became involved with Budget Rent A Car, which took us to the airport on a daily basis.

We then became involved with a number of airlines as their Ground Handling Agents and as a result, started doing Eastern United Airfreight through East Coast Airlines, East West Cargo then came on the scene and from there became Ansett Airfreight and today TNT Priority and Startrack road Freight. We also handle Metrostate Security Couriers, Qantas Freight and Greyhound Bus Freight.

How has the company changed over this time, and tell us about your services?

We started off delivering in a Mini Minor Station Wagon, but that very quickly changed as the volume of freight grew, and we now have a fleet of Vans and Trucks.

Nifty’s Courier Service was registered in 1988 and we have services to Guyra, Glen Innes, Bundarra, Inverell, Delungra, Bingara, Tamworth with onforwarding Agents to Deepwater, Tenterfield, Gunnedah, Moree and Coffs Harbour.

We now have two Depots, one at Acacia Park (Myrtle Drive) and the other at the

Armidale Airport, where whether it be general freight, animals, same day or next flight, freight can be lodged.

Tell us about the team at Nifty’s ...

We have a great team working with us; some have been with us for years, and some are new. Originally we started with myself, my wife Diane, and our daughters, Danielle and Simone - we now have a team of 10.

Danielle left to work and travel overseas and now lives in Brisbane with her husband, Richard and two children, Jade and Drew, while Simone is back with us after several years running a small business with her husband, Jason.

Outside of work what would we find the Northey family up to? We live on a small acreage just outside of Armidale, so weekends are spent looking after all of our animals, renovating our house, restoring an old caravan and soon we hope to start restoring an old Valiant car with my grandson, Nathan.

Nearly every Saturday night we have a family BBQ as Simone, Jason and their three children, Nathan, Makayla and Breanna live on the same property in a separate house.

Plans for the future?

A few years ago, we bought a motorhome and eventually down the track we would love to travel around Australia.

Tell us about Jamie and his role in the business ... Jamie is instrumental in our business. He is our showroom salesman and also the manager of our blinds division. He is extremely knowledgeable on all aspects of window furnishings and floor coverings.

Jamie has been with Hunts Carpets and Blinds since 2004.

He knows our suppliers very well and has a great relationship with them. This gives us the opportunity to be competitive on pricing.

Who inspires you and why? I am inspired by anyone that has a go. Business is tough and competing with the internet is becoming harder, so anyone who is getting up every day trying to make a living for their family, providing opportunities for their employees, staying up to date with the market, and generally working hard, is what inspires me.

How do you encourage a positive working environment?

The team at J&K are a great bunch of people. We have 28 employees who all have different personalities and some clash, but at the end of the day everyone gets on well and has a beer together at the day’s end. We try to make it a fun place to work as much as we can, because I am sure they wouldn’t like to be a part of the team if it wasn’t a fun place to be each day. They all have a big job to do each day and they do it well; we are lucky that each employee knows their job and most of the time there are no problems. At J&K we try to make it as fun as we can; it is a stressful job some days to try and get everything out and delivered all in about half a day by the time we get our freight, but the guys and girls do a fantastic job to keep our customers happy.

Plans for the future? We don’t have any big plans in the immediate future; we are working on our own delivery scanning and sign on glass system, which will help our freight business keep control of what is coming in and going out.

We would like to upgrade our Niagara St shop at some stage and make it more inviting and more known to the community what we sell there.

How long have you been with New England FOCUS? I have been with FOCUS for almost two years now. It’s an exciting position, in which I get to meet people from all walks of life.

What background do you bring to your current role?

Hospitality, retail, photography and sales are my background. I mesh them all together and take parts from one role or another to mould into my role at FOCUS. As it is not your typical job, I have had to redefine my previous experience to suit my current role. I feel that you must always keep evolving to keep up with such an industry.

What is the most satisfying part of your job?

I think when the month’s hard work builds up and explodes into a beautiful publication that is seen by thousands of people over the New England. I get to meet all kinds of characters too; you get to know what’s happening in the community and abroad.

How do you balance your work/lifestyle?

Well balance, that’s a bit of a hard one, as I run a business with my beautiful partner Shannan Bourke (Superbooth Australia - Photo Booth Hire) and without her I’d probably be well and truly lost! I also do photography for businesses, clubs, and weddings as well as study part-time - so getting some spare time is rare, but wonderful.

On days off, movies and some well needed couch time is generally on the cards.

Plans for the future?

So many plans - finish course, continue to work hard at FOCUS and generally live and love life.

ndrew was a much loved senior lecturer in Theatre Studies at the University of New England from the early eighties to 2009, when he retired. He was also a highly talented writer, musician and performer, well known for the cabarets he co-wrote with John McCallum in the eighties and nineties. An initial selection of these songs have been recorded on the album, Aspiring to Failure with his sister, Penelope McCue, and local musicians.

The landscape of Diggers Camp featured in the exhibition was common ground for Andrew McCue and Arthur Chaffey as a place of retreat - a place for families to gather and enjoy the renewal of the ocean, the bush and the sun.

These works are done from memory and often feature the red road that runs to and from

Diggers, bending through the heath lands and the forest of Yuraygir National Park that encircles it.

In the paintings, the road becomes both a perspective to experience the landscape and an avenue for the memory, remembered places and people, the way holiday retreats can simplify lives and relationships, nourish togetherness and slow time.

It’s the lake and the stands of casuarina, wattle and bloodwood that greet you the moment you turn off the bitumen of the Wooli Road, then the way Lake Hiawatha further opens up on your left. The road kicks the suspension of your vehicle around, and the red dust rises as you make your way east to the ocean.

Somewhere along that road you start to surrender yourself to the place. In a way you are picking up from the last time, tying two temporal

strings of experience together, the past and the present. The bush looks familiar but never the same.

The place smells of dust and eucalypts, sun stained memories and the sweat from being in the car too long, the salt through the window from the ocean you can’t yet see, but it’s telling you it’s waiting.

These are emotive paintings. They come from beneath the skin, from the memory: the red ochres of the road; Indian yellow wattle, bloodwood reds and hot greens that hold the coastal heat; night skies with the heath far below illumined by moon and starlight.

Andrew and Al Heeney arrive at my tent at the Borkoum campground on dusk. We sit and drink tea by the campfire as the night draws around. They take turns playing Beatle songs, harmonising, Andrew playing the guitar upside

down, as he’s always done.

Later I hear their voices as they walk back along the beach, laughing, still harmonising.

Above it’s all stars, from time immemorial, blinking back to our time.

I make ready to leave. The reluctance and sadness is undermined by the thought of the next visit. There’s the photos and drawings to remember the trip, the sand in the car, along with the odd leaves of banksia. The place wants to come with you, owns you in a way.

The paintings draw on the work of Aboriginal painters, as well as those from the western landscape tradition. There’s perspective and horizon lines, brooding or bustling foregrounds.

Yet there are also the ochres and earth textures from aboriginal painting, dots that hint at territory and country, a place that still joins the past with the present.

A-TO-Z OF HIKING AND BIKING IT’S ALL ABOUT HIKING AND BIKING THIS MONTH. WHY? PROBABLY BECAUSE I FIND THE THOUGHT OF ANY TYPE OF EXERCISE AT THIS TIME OF THE YEAR WHEN IT’S COLD AND DARK, DEFINITELY NOT AT THE TOP OF MY “TO DO” LIST.

ctually, if I was REALLY honest with myself, the thought of exercise isn’t on my radar at ANY time of the year! BUT, for some people, walking, hiking or biking is their idea of a perfect holiday, so for them I have put together an A Z of walking or cycling the world.

A - Appalachian Trail on the east coast of the US is a little different to a lot of other trails, as the exact length of the trail changes over time as tracks are modified or added. The total length is approximately 3,500 km, and it passes through 14 states, from Georgia in the south to Maine in the north. You can pick it up wherever you like. It’s best to either head to the area closest to you, or really do your research and pick out the parts of the trail that will satisfy what it is that you are looking for out of a good hike. Another oddity: the majority of the trail is in wilderness, although some portions traverse towns, roads and cross rivers.

B - Bibbulmun Track - is one of the world’s great long distance walking trails, stretching 1000 km from Kalamunda, a suburb on the outskirts of Perth, to the historic town of Albany on the south coast of WA. The track can be done in sections or as a whole and passes through some of WA’s most beautiful National Parks.

C - The Camino de Santiago - is possibly the world’s oldest trekking route, which follows an ancient pilgrimage route for 800 km from France, over the Pyrenees and then traversing northern Spain through wheat fields, past cathedrals, monasteries and convents to the

Tomb of St James. Everyone on the Camino has a Pilgrim Passport, which can be stamped en route at bars, hotels and churches.

D - Dolomites - the white limestone pinnacles, mountains and valleys that make up the Dolomites are home to some of Europe’s most scenic walks and bike rides. From relatively easy walks through the picturesque valleys to the more challenging Via Ferrate using cables that cling to the side of the mountain, the Dolomites will get your heart racing.

E - Everest Basecamp - the highest mountain on earth, Everest and the Himalayas is the pinnacle of base camp treks and is on every trekker’s bucket list. Pass between towering icy peaks, visit colourful Buddhist monasteries and experience Sherpa culture at local villages as you conquer this iconic trek.

F - Freycinet - the 4 day trek along Tassie’s east coast takes you along deserted beaches, past pink granite monoliths, through Freycinet National Park including Wineglass Bay, and each night is spent in comfortable lodge accommodation.

G - Glacier National Park, Montana, is a regular hiker’s heaven, with more than 1200 km of marked trails. Named for the huge glaciers that helped to shape its rock formations 10,000 years ago, it once had 150 glaciers, but today there are only 26 left - so you’d better hurry.

Three players from that Grand Final went on to play NRL: Dean Widders and Justin Doyle from Armidale and Preston Campbell from Inverell. Dennis Moran, who played for Uralla in reserve grade, that day also went on to play in the NRL. Four young players from the bush - a great achievement.

The reserve grade side, coached by Jake Widders, were beaten by Uralla that day, which was disappointing, as they had a great year and faltered at the final game. Ben Edwards, Billy Gash, Steve Sewell, Dave Widders, Craig Mcleroy all played in the A grade during the year.

A special reunion is being held in September for the Galloping Greens of 1995 and all the old and present players, supporters, sponsors and Rugby Leauge fans.

Tell us about the event, and how FOCUS readers get involved?

It has been 21 years since we were club champions and won A Grade and Juniors. Time gets away, and I think we should celebrate our achievements, as everyone is busy and before long our time is up. We have to make time and celebrate. We have lost a

few of our football family since ‘95, so let’s make the most of the 21 years celebration and as we sung in our team song, “The more we are together the happier we will be”.

On September 3rd at the Ex Services Club from 6:30 7pm in the auditorium. We invite any supporter or player who would like to come and have a catch up with a beer, wine, meal and some live music. Woolgoolga Curryfest As if the lure of sun, sand and beautiful beaches wasn’t enough, there’s another reason the little coastal town of Woolgoolga is garnering more and more attention from residents all over Australia.

Just 15 minutes north of Coffs Harbour, a cultural extravaganza is brewing.

WHEN I USE A WORD...

“WHEN I USE A WORD”, HUMPTY DUMPTY SAID TO ALICE, “IT MEANS JUST WHAT I CHOOSE IT TO MEAN …”

D

oes it matter how we use words?

For example, do we live in The New England or New England?

As a friend - grinding her teeth - said, “We don’t say that we’re going to The England, do we?”

Which reminds me of that very-big-little made-up word “Brexit”, which is shaking world history. Lately the word “election” has come to hold more resonance than usual for us, wherever we live. This is not a political column, so I’ll stick to discussing words and their meanings e.g. the word “launch” seems to have altered, as it now comes at the end of a campaign instead of at the beginning. And a policy “announcement” is released before it is made. Oh, Alice … Then of course, there was when “cool” became “hot” or vice-versa - I forget …

Then there’s the “Pre-Spring” fashion - would that be Winter? And the “Vegan Butcher” I saw in Sydney. Oh, and “glamping” is now in the OED - a tourism business I often wonder about for here. And you may have picked up that “quirky” is a word that often points to my interests.

The Eighties word “Foodie” sounds derisory now. “Innovation” in the digital world, according to Tim Rayner of UTS, means “entrepreneurship, self-organising teams, fast ideas and cheap customer experiments”, rather than invention and careful - probably slow - development.

A serious discussion can be had over using the word “indigenous”. Many Aboriginal people I know don’t like its use, as it can arguably stretch to those generationally born here, (e.g. like me?)

Margaret Walford prefers “Aboriginal”- from the original - and she has told the Governor-General so. I rather agree with her.

One “scientifically justifiable” but “typo” word in a proof of a Melbourne University paper on increased Australian temperatures set off a storm among climate sceptics that resulted in a four-year delay in publication and checking, but ended with the original conclusion.

Political and economic times in the world are currently undergoing “seismic” change. When

times are changing, that’s when opportunities arise, I was always told. In this region we need to use our words better to both sell ourselves and to maximise the strength of our position. Using our conspicuous advantages and differences to the full is surely the way to go. Presenting ourselves “energetically” with “infectious” enthusiasm - can help market us. And telling some of our quirkier stories doesn’t go amiss.

The launch of the new Fly Corporate air service to Brisbane is a step in the right direction, but of course we need to use all our Qantas and Rex services to Sydney, as well as welcoming the new Brisbane opportunities. They are all only “viable” if we give them our custom.

The Armidale Business Chamber and the UNE Business School together report that more than half local businesses are “holding steady” or growing and that key challenges are around transport, labour and access to like-minded business people. Drawing people together, talking and collaborating strengthens impact.

“Collaborator” was a word with unfortunate implications in WW II - now it seems vital.

Dr. Ian Tiley, Administrator of the Armidale Regional Council, is certainly taking his job by the scruff of the neck and sees the “arts” as a vital ingredient of local culture, well-being and identity.

Watch this space!

“Olympic” is a word with new local meanings, as Georgina Morgan, Hockeyroo, and Katie Kelly, paralympian triathlete, compete in the Rio games. It is fitting that these mountain girls are competing in the games first held as early as 776BC and called Olympic after Mount Olympus, fabled home of the Greek gods. Go girls!

Lastly, Dr. Suzanne Robertson has been bringing the symbolism of the word “Vegemite” to our overseas students. Words are important!

And with everything that’s happening in the world, “balance” sounds like a good word to me.

“Optimism” should be a prime ingredient in the work of icing our particular cake.

Woolgoolga Curryfest is celebrating 11 years of culture, cuisine and good community fun and as things heat up towards the September festival, organisers are promising one of the biggest and best events to date.

The event, which is one of Destination NSW’s celebrated flagship events, has seen as many as 13,000 people flock to the seaside village, and this year it is expected that more than 15,000 will come and help celebrate their 11th anniversary.

On the northern reaches of the Coffs Coast, the town of Woolgoolga is home to the biggest Australian Punjabi Sikh population outside

of capital cities. This year the fun begins with the “Flavours of Curryfest” restaurant experiences. Starting on Saturday the 3rd of September at the Seaview Tavern. The flavours event has grown from the original “Tastes of Woolgoolga” into a full calendar of dining events from Grafton to Coffs Harbour, for all the details on the Flavours, Bollywood Movies, and Festival events follow us on facebook @ Woolgoolga Curryfest. On September 24, the whole town celebrates its unique heritage with Curryfest, a food and cultural festival that has grown into a flagship event.

If you are an employer, you should adhere to the correct and current legislation to protect both your business and your staff.

There is over 120 industry and occupation awards in Australia. Classifying the correct award is not always straightforward. Employees will often have a range of different roles and several awards can apply to a business. Employees should check to make sure they are being paid the correct pay rate for their hours worked. Pay rates can be determined by an award, enterprise agreement or with reference to the national minimum wage which is currently $17.70 per hour before tax. Certain employees such as junior employees, trainees or apprentices will have different pay entitlements.

It is also important to know your industry penalty rates and allowances. This may be applicable if you work weekends, public holidays or overtime or if you undertake supervisory roles, use your own tools, have any specific skills or work in dangerous environments.

Equally important is knowing your rights or obligations when it comes to taking or approving leave. Leave is generally available if you are sick, need to care for someone, are grieving, have been injured at work, have worked continuously for the same employer for an extended period of time or you have accrued it annually. In certain circumstances, some of these entitlements can be paid out when ending employment.

Employees must also make sure that they understand and are familiar with redundancy and superannuation guarantee entitlements.

Employers have an obligation to provide payslips and keep records. It is important to keep pay-slips, and maintain records of all contracts, agreements, awards, employment policies and any other relevant documents. If a dispute does arise, quick and easy access can facilitate an

early outcome and minimise costs. If you are consulting with a solicitor, you should have these records available for your first appointment.

If you have been dismissed from your job and believe it was harsh, unjust or unreasonable there are avenues you can pursue. Always remember to act quickly. Strict limitations apply as applications are generally not accepted after 21 days of your dismissal taking effect.

Employers must be sure that there are sufficient grounds to dismiss an employee or terminate a contract. Small businesses have different rules surrounding dismissal and an employer should consider obtaining professional advice if they have any doubt about the proper procedures to be applied to considering the dismissal of an employee.

In the event that you have to file proceedings, the award you are covered by may determine what jurisdiction in which your matter will be heard. Most people are covered by a federal award which means their matter will usually be dealt with in the Fair Work Commission. If you are employed by the state public sector or local government, it is likely that the Industrial Relations Commission will be the appropriate jurisdiction. In some circumstances, such as recovering statutory and award entitlements, it may be appropriate to commence proceeding in the Federal Circuit Court or the Local Court.

It is always preferable to resolve any concerns or disputes you may have by talking any grievance with your employee or employer to avoid the cost and imposition of formal proceedings. It is also usually an award or contractual requirement to participate in mediation or other alternative dispute resolution before commencing any legal action. The Fair Work Ombudsmen may also be able to offer some assistance. Employees might consider obtaining advice from their union and employers might consult a relevant employer group or their local business chamber.
