ith the kick start of the college Rugby Season ahead, Oak Tree Retirement Village Armidale proudly salutes their support as major sponsors for the St Albert’s College Rugby Teams.

This weekend hosts the first of the matches between rival teams from Robb College and St Albert’s College at the annual Parents Weekend which sees some 500 parents gather to take part in a number of social and sporting events including Netball, Hockey and Rugby.

“It gives us great pleasure to support the community of St Albert’s and in particular their Rugby club with many of us at Oak Tree keen rugby fanatics,” said Managing Director Mark Bindon who grew up in Armidale and understands the local sporting culture.

“As major sponsors it is a great opportunity to give back to the community and connect to the people, places and events that help make Armidale the thriving and wonderful place it is.”

Coinciding with the Parents Weekend is the Oak Tree Retirement Village Open Day on the 1st and 2nd of April.

The village opens its doors to the public welcoming college supporters to inspect the homes and carefree lifestyle on offer.

“Our independent, affordable retirement village offers many benefits to seniors including companionship, social activities, a secure, gated environment and low maintenance living,” said Mr Bindon.

With so many families in town, Oak Tree wanted to be available to answer questions about retirement living and, in particular, support college families who may have senior family members considering a move to a retirement village.

“It is becoming increasingly common for family to become involved in the decision making process leading to “Mum and Dad” making a move to a village,” said Mr Bindon

“We consider it important to remain an open book and prove we have the best interests of our residents at heart, and that Mum and Dad’s needs will be looked after in the village.”

A major benefit of retirement living is the peace of mind it brings to the families.

“Families of our residents often breathe a sigh of relief when “Mum/Dad” are settled into their new home; they are supported by like-minded people and have endless company, their homes are step free and easier to manage, and all lawns and gardens are maintained for them which is a big thing as this means family no longer need to feel obliged to come over and mow lawns every other weekend,” he said.

Oak Tree’s Village Manager, Kate Pigram will be available at the Open Day and is hopeful to revisit many familiar faces, having a long history with the St Albert’s College herself as the former Dean of the College.

“Oak Tree Armidale would like to wish the St Albert’s teams good luck at the weekend,” said Mr Bindon.

Oak Tree will continue to sponsor more community events in the future as they become further integrated into the local community.

SHAKESPEARE’S Villains To celebrate the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare, Alex Robson from the Felt Tip Theatre Company has come up with something a little devious.

Shakespeare’s Villains: Everyone but Iago is a cheeky exploration of the darkest characters from the Bard’s plays.

Robson devised the play himself, and is no stranger to Shakespeare. In 2014 he wrote A Short Guide to Shakespeare to celebrate the 450th anniversary of the playwright’s birth. The play was listed as one of the top ten “must see” shows of the 2014 Sydney Fringe Festival, and went on to tour the state, with sell-out shows in Limbri, Narrabri and Port Macquarie.

Earlier this year he won a scholarship to study Shakespeare at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

“Whereas Short Guide was based heavily on biography, this focuses on certain characters with excerpts from the plays,” Robson said.

However, as the play’s subtitle suggest, not all villains are accounted for.

“Whenever I spoke with friends and colleagues about this show, they said ‘Oh, you must do Iago!’ It got to the point where I thought nothing could be more villainous than to cut him.”

Like his Short Guide, the play is a two-person show, this one featuring fellow UNE graduate Libby Jeisman, a professional actress based in Brisbane.

Shakespeare’s Villains will premiere in Armidale on 23rd April, the anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, at TAS Hoskins Centre, with two shows only. Tickets are available from Carr’s newsXpress and felttiptheatrecompany.com.

i Hayley. How does Live Live Cinema: Little Shop of Horrors differ from other theatrical performances of Little Shop that people may have seen?

Lots of people are confused by the idea to start with, because it's not the musical theatre production Little Shop of Horrors. It's actually the 1960 original Roger Corman film Little Shop of Horrors, which is what the musical was based on. So, it's completely different from anything anyone would have seen before! The movie plays with no sound, and we create all of the voices, sound effects and brand new score.

It's pretty awesome.

So, you won't hear any of the well-known musical numbers you might be expecting. But what you will hear is an incredibly rock 'n' rollin' score by Leon Radojkovic, hilarious sound effects created out of bizarre items and the best Mr Mushnik you have ever heard.

How did the idea of creating this unique concept come about?

It started with Leon Radojkovic (composer), the mad man. Then he joined with equally mad Oliver Driver (director) and the idea was born.

It's an insane amount of fun to perform, but while we were making it, all we could think was, “Is this actually going to work?”

It's the hardest show I've ever performed in terms of what I actually have to do: one minute I'm playing a complicated piano piece; two seconds later I'm on the other side of the stage voicing Audrey while making sure the door creaks and a bucket drops from the ceiling. It's insanity, basically. The cast have a lot of fun trying to make it harder for each other.

I'm surprised we still get on at all.

With an entire production cast of seven (and a cast of only four), which characters do you play?

I play Audrey, Hortense Fishtwanger, the prostitute Leonora Clyde, sometimes I play the plant Audrey Jnr, screaming children ... a sassy waitress whose accent I change each night just to keep it exciting!

It occurs to me that this type of production - with the original 1960 Roger Corman film playing in the background and actors not only performing in perfect lip synch to the original soundtrack BUT also playing a new score AND creating live foley (sound effects) - is potentially open to some very funny (and stressful!) moments. What have been some of the hilarious incidences

you've needed to cope with on stage?

There have been some really tense moments so far! The piano not working (the very first sound of the show), a guitar cutting out and Byron and Barnie having to swap it out for a new one while continuing to voice the characters, props breaking, buckets dropping at the wrong time.

But I think the worst/funniest moment was in Milton Keynes in the UK, when the movie started skipping. And kept skipping. We were trying to match our voices to the actors’ mouths while the movie was freezing and jumping back and forward. It made for some hilarious improv!

What are some of the more bizarre instruments/implements you use to create sound effects?

A wet towel on a string rigged in the roof combined with scratching the inside of a large box creates the sound of Audrey Jnr, an angle grinder sparking against a metal pole makes for a good dentist's drill and a piece of leather whipped against Laughton Kora's bum provides a satisfying sound that really makes no sense!

What have you enjoyed most about touring this production outside of New Zealand?

The company have a lot of fun on tour, and getting to see new parts of the world is an added bonus to what is already an enjoyable production. But we love seeing how each

audience responds to our mad show. We've had such great responses so far, and we love finding new ways to thrill our audiences.

If you were able to be a part of this production as an audience member (instead of an actor taking centre stage), what do you think the experience would be like?

I always wish I could watch it (but then I'd be jealous about not being in it). I would love to rock out to the music - it really is awesome and we've got some awesome musicians in our group. Screaming guitars, tricky piano, mean drums beats. We are a tight band, and the music is just awesome.

How much are you looking forward to visiting regional NSW with this show?

We are all really excited to get back together for this tour after a little break away from the show. I haven't travelled much around Australia, so I can't wait to see new parts of the country and share our awesome show with them. We love performing it, so any opportunity to do it is exciting to us!

I was born in Penrith, grew up in Tamworth and moved to Armidale in 2013 to be with my husband, Sam Rice. Since I moved here, I have fallen in love with Armidale and the surrounding areas, and I am definitely here to stay. Sam and I have some acreage out of town which is a lot of work, so this takes up most our weekends, unless we are away doing a couple of Campdrafts. The insurance industry was something that I stumbled into; however, looking back I wouldn’t have it any other way!

What is your role with Austbrokers NTIB, and what do you specialise in?

I am an Account Executive (Insurance Broker) - I successfully obtained my Diploma of Insurance Broking in 2015 and have been working here for over two years. I specialise in all insurance lines and will endeavour to come up with a tailored

insurance package to assist with any insurance needs. I find the most competitive premium and ensure the right coverage is offered, so that the cover will respond correctly in the event of a claim.

What do you love most about what you do?

Every day is different! I’m responsible for the cover of my clients’ assets, and I believe the most critical part of the job is assisting my client in achieving their desired outcome in the unfortunate scenario of a claim. I enjoy taking the time to talk with my clients to help understand their insurance needs better, meeting new people and providing the customer service people should expect.

Walcha will be the destination for two of Adelaide’s most successful theatre companies, The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of SA and Co-Opera, who are collaborating with a fabulous production of The Mikado on Easter Sunday at Langford.

Heading the project are three distinguished names in Australian theatre circles: Director Ric Trevaskis, Music Director Brian Chatterton and Designer David Lampard. Together they have assembled a cast of experienced performers, who will be accompanied by a quintet of excellent musicians.

Gilbert and Sullivan’s Mikado premiered at London’s Savoy Theatre in 1885 and is still one of the best loved comic operas. It is about the silliness of politics, and the English in particular, who at the time had a fascination for all things Japanese.

Director Ric Traveskis said of Gilbert and Sullivan: “They honed the art of having a laugh at the establishment with wit, irony and irreverence, while never compromising the inherently warm charm of their works. The frequency with which their operas are still performed by major companies around the world is testimony to the endearing and enduring nature of their legacy.”

ell the readers; what is the Celtic Festival?

Since 1992, crowds have descended on Glen Innes in New England High Country.

They come for the Australian Celtic Festival - the country’s hallmark event celebrating Celtic culture and history. They are attracted by the unique Celtic experience, the opportunity to meet with friends and to enjoy famous country hospitality. Don’t take our word for it ... Just ask the crowds of spectators, clans, artists and enthusiasts who flock from across Australia and overseas for the annual Australian Celtic Festival in Glen Innes on the first weekend in May, attracted by the unique Celtic experience.

Focal point for the festival is the dramatic setting of the Australian Standing Stones. The Australian Standing Stones are an array of granite monoliths on a hill on the eastern edge of town. The festival attracts clans, cultural groups, dancers and performers from around the world.

Entertainment includes a street parade, kirking of the tartan, massed pipe bands, strong man events, yard dog trials, children’s entertainment, a fun run, dancing, flag raising ceremonies, poet breakfasts, market stalls and Celtic foods.

How long has the festival been running?

The festival has been running for 24 years, since 1992, and was established to annually celebrate the unique significance of the Australian Standing Stones. The Australian Standing Stones began as an ambitious project by a small, dedicated group of citizens who wanted to mark Glen Innes’ Celtic heritage.

What can newcomers to the festival expect?

Ultimate BLUES & BBQ FESTIVAL FOCUS talks with locals Amy and Ben, who run Ultimate BBQ Catering, about their entry into the 2016 Blues and BBQ Festival held in Port Macquarie on the first weekend in April. This dynamic duo will compete against other entrants from around the world and hope to wear the crown at this year’s festival.

ow did you come to compete in BBQ Wars?

We attended the first Blues and BBQ Festival in Port Macquarie in 2014 as punters. We had already

started our barbecue catering business, Ultimate BBQ Catering in 2013, and we were interested in American style low and slow barbecue. We had a blast! Walking around the competition grounds, there was a real sense of excitement and community, even though the competition barbecue scene in Australia was (and really still is!) so young. We decided then and there that we would compete in the 2015 competition.

What was your experience of the festival?

Of course, we had no experience whatsoever! We spent some of the next year building some Ugly Drum smokers, researching recipes and techniques and purchasing some necessary equipment. We were able to buy our Pro Q smoker right here in Armidale at Barbecues Galore. However, with Ben working during the week, and much of our time on the weekends taken up with catering work, we inched closer and closer to the competition without getting as much practice as we needed. In fact, we only had about two months to really focus and trial recipes for the competition.

The barbecue industry is really taking off in Australia, and there has never been a better time to get involved. We now have both importers and local producers of U.S style offset smokers, as well as other types of barbecues from around the world. You may have been watching Food Safari Fire on SBS, which focuses on the way that fire is used to cook food around the world. Barbecue festivals and restaurants are popping up all over the place. We recently travelled to Sydney to attend Meatstock, a barbecue festival organised by those behind the Blues and BBQ Festival.

“ hen and why did the New England Bach Festival first begin in Armidale?

The first Bach Festival was organised in 2003, by organist and harpsichordist Terry Norman, who had an abiding interest in the music of Bach and felt that sharing this would be great for Armidale and the region. The second festival was a year later, and since then they’ve been every two years - which makes this year’s festival the eighth. That’s a pretty good track record of bringing some of the best Australian and a few international Baroque performers to Armidale.

What is your involvement with the festival?

I co-ordinated the performance of the Coffee Cantata in Hanna’s Arcade in the first festival and have been the Artistic Director of the festival since the third one in 2006. In the six festivals that I’ve directed, I’ve been concerned with a couple of important aspects. Firstly, to broaden the potential appeal of the festival by making it more than just historically informed performances of Baroque music, though that is always an important part of the festival. To this end, we’ve had jazz interpretations of Bach and the Baroque, new arrangements of Baroque works including the guitar duo version of the Goldberg Variations by EphenStephen, and

contemporary works influenced or related to Bach, including some written specially for the festival. The other aspect has been to create new links between performers including getting local performers to perform with some of our visitors. Both these aspects continue in this years festival.

What can we expect to see at the Bach Festival this year?

Lots of cantatas! More than 200 of Bach’s cantatas survive, and five of them (numbers 56, 170, 188, 210 and 211) are part of the festival, along with Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater (which Bach incidentally adapted towards the end of his life) and Handel’s German Arias.

We’ve got some really interesting visiting artists. Natural trumpeter John Foster (Artistic Director of Australian Baroque Brass who have been to three previous festivals) will give a bright and brilliant opening to the festival in a concert with organist David Drury. This will include a new work I’ve written specially for him. David will also do a solo concert, which will include improvising on themes by local students. When he did this in the last festival, it blew the audience’s minds. Bach was known as a master improviser, and David almost seems to channel his spirit.

David will also be part of the Armidale Organ Crawl. Brisbane Baroque group Arioso (Judit Molnar, Margaret Caley, Belinda Mainwaring and Janet Brewer) are coming to perform Bach’s

Wedding Cantata, the Handel German Arias and some violin sonatas. And finally there’s a fantastic cello and accordion duo (Rachel Scott and Anthony Schulz) who’ll give the Baroque a whole new sound world. Rachel will also be performing a solo cello suite.

We also have some great local performers, with Warwick Dunham playing the Poulenc Organ Concerto, making use of the new TAS organ, Ruth Strutt and Kylie Constantine singing the Pergolesi Stabat Mater, and being part of Cantata 188 with Greg McPhan and Elias Wilson, guitar duo EphenStephen (Steve Tafra and Steve Thorneycroft) and a wonderfully intriguing Baroque fusion concert called The Wondrous Machine (the title comes from a Purcell song which is included) featuring Ruth Strutt, Steve Thorneycroft, Steve Harris and Ash Hall. A special feature of this festival will be that every concert will be introduced with a Bach chorale sung by various groups.

We shouldn’t forget a number of free events in the festival. It is an important part of any festival to have events that reach out into the community and to broaden appeal and hellp build future audiences. The free events include our now traditional performance of the Coffee

Cantata in Hanna’s Arcade and the Festival Evensong (with Cantata 56) but we also have a couple of informal late night performances in the Armidale Club - the Baroque Bar which will feature many of the festival musicians and others. This is an opportunity for local and visiting musicians to interact and play together in a relaxed environment. We hope that this will give anyone in Armidale a chance to experience part of the festival, and discover the joys of the Baroque, without having to commit to a full formal concert.

Plans for the future?

The Museum of Printing at the New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM) will host a special artist-in-residence project in April 2016, with funding from the Country Arts Support Programme of Regional Arts NSW.

A

rtist, printer, writer, blogger and bookbinder Caren Florance is one of Australia’s leading exponents of the artform of letterpress and will spend a week as artist in residence at the Museum of Printing from 2 - 9 April, presenting a series of workshops and talks while she is in Armidale.

Caren has been printing with letterpress for over twenty years, working with writers and artists on projects ranging from zines and stickers to books and posters, and even installation work. She often prints under the imprint of Ampersand Duck and is currently studying a PhD at the

University of Canberra and teaches book arts at the ANU School of Art. “Letterpress is the traditional printing process used to make newspapers, books, pamphlets and posters and it is enjoying a major resurgence around the world, as artists, designers and craftspeople want to get back to the old ways of making beautiful things,” said Robert Heather, Director of NERAM. “We are extremely lucky to have the wonderful F.T. Wimble and Co. Collection of printing equipment, type and books here in the Museum of Printing at NERAM, one of the largest collections of its type in Australia, so there is a unique opportunity to

position Armidale as a local leader of the renaissance of this artform.”

Caren will present a two-day workshop at the Museum of Printing in partnership with the New England Writers Centre, that will cover how to make a small publication using hand-set letterpress. Participants will work with their own (or found) text to make an 8-page zine or chapbook and will learn how to set and print lead and wooden type, as well as the basics of book design and production.

No, we don’t sell products locally.

We send all of our milk to the Murray Goulburn factories in either Sydney or Brisbane.

What advice would you have for anyone considering a career as a dairy farmer?

I would say to anyone who is thinking about a dairy farming career that if you love working with animals and like a challenging career which is very satisfying at the end of each day, then this is the career for you.

here are you originally from, and what prompted you to choose dentistry as a career?

I’m a Sydney boy, but I’ve lived in a few different places. Dad’s work took us to Melbourne and Hong Kong for a few years. I studied dentistry at the University of Adelaide and so lived in South Australia for five years.

What brought you to Armidale?

This is a simple one: Colin Pateman’s Dental Surgery. I have very close friends who live in Armidale but when I came across Colin, quite by fluke, it was a simple decision for me. I feel honoured and privileged to work here and until Colin retires fully a little later in the year, I get to work alongside him. Colin has done an amazing job looking after this community for several decades! I’ve got some big shoes to fill.

I believe this practice has been in operation since 1943. It is my intention to keep it going long after I retire. Joanne and Wendy, whom many of you will know, do a fantastic job and have our patients’ best interests at heart. Bev, who had almost been at the practice as long as Colin, has taken the opportunity to retire - but hopefully she won’t be a stranger, because we’re missing her smiling, friendly face.

ell the readers about yourself …

I grew up all over the place, really. I was born in Wagga, moved to Sydney when I was four, stayed ‘til I was 12, then moved to Walgett. Then we moved to Armidale; my mum’s a teacher here in Armidale. Following this I went to Sydney to study exercise science.

I also worked with children with disabilities, which was my main focus at the time. However, the main reason I got into health and fitness is because I had knee injuries from basketball and football.

I was lucky enough to meet some really influential people, who showed me how to train in a effective way, which sparked my interest to further my education and go to university and obtain a degree in Exercise Science. While I was at uni, I volunteered in disability services, which got me interested in working with youth.

So, fitness is a large part of your life. What gave you the idea to start your own barbell group?

The dream started in Sydney, when my college roommate and I came up with the idea to have

So, it’s a win-win in that regard.

Not only do we train at the gym; we want to train and teach our kids of the future positive life and social skills. None of this would be possible without the continued input and support from my brother, Zeb Marks and father Stephen Marks, co-owners of New England Barbell and Becky Smouha (my partner); without her help and support, I wouldn’t be able to do the youth programme.

Pathfinders aims to improve the quality of life and wellbeing for each individual who comes in contact with one of our services, whilst also benefitting the larger communities we work within.

Pathfinders is passionate about working towards ensuring every individual is given the right opportunities to become a valued and contributing member of our society.

Pathfinders has always played a key role in our communities. We support and empower the disadvantaged. We help to build a more sane, just and equitable society. We provide safety and refuge where there is risk and harm, not only for those in our direct care, but for everyone in our society, from the most downtrodden, to the most well-to-do.

At Pathfinders, we provide a spectrum of care and support services which meet the needs of families, children and young people. Our aim is to provide entry points which meet our clients “where they are” and at whatever level of need.

How does Pathfinders assist youth?

Pathfinders has a suite of programmes that offer youth options when they think there is nowhere else to turn. Pathways Out of Home Care and Tilbuster Working Farm will embark on their Annual Pumpkin Run to Sydney, stopping in Tamworth and Newcastle. The week long adventure will see 4 tonnes of pumpkins grown and harvested by the young people from Tilbuster Station, turned into hundreds of cups of soup for the homeless. Approximately eight young people with support workers and staff will travel to Tamworth, Newcastle and Sydney with the pumpkins to cook soup to feed the homeless and disadvantaged.

The donation is an act of compassion and adds a synergy to the Pathfinders’ programme at Tilbuster Station, where disadvantaged youth in the country are lending a helping hand to homeless youth in the city. It is also about the generosity of our young people who wanted to assist other young people doing it tough in other regions. Our dedicated staff, young people and volunteers ban together to muster up resources to make it happen.

YARAANDOO. PATHFINDERS TILBUSTER STATION WORKING FARM IS RECOGNISED AS ONE OF THE REGION’S ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION FACILITIES AND PLAYS A KEY ROLE IN MANY YOUNG PEOPLE’S LIVES.

T

ilbuster facilitates practical application for a wide range of vocational and social learning, personal growth and a sense of achievement for participants in a safe and nurturing environment. Tilbuster Station also offers young people a safe place to stay and belong and be supported, where they can learn life and work skills.

To expand upon the work Tilbuster Station currently does with disadvantaged and disengaged youth, Pathfinders has entered a pilot programme with Yaraandoo cattle farm at Ebor. Three young people already engaged with the Tilbuster Station programme will embark on an eight week work ready programme with Yaraandoo Station. This will also complement their learning and enrolment in a Certificate III in Agriculture at TAFE. Owners Lorraine and Jack Gordon are generously sharing their working cattle farm and agricultural knowledge to further boost the skills

of the young participants. The programme will enable the young people to be hands on and gain knowledge of a full working cattle farm. They will learn skills in cattle handling, management and other farm activities, including fencing. By gaining these rural skills on a larger scale property, the young people can then apply for employment on local farms.

Partnering with Yaraandoo will give on the job training and knowledge from other agricultural mentors.

After being released from Juvenile Justice, Pathfinders began assisting Nathanial by supporting him on his pathway to rehabilitation and reconnection with his community.

Nathanial has re-engaged with school and is currently completing Year 12, has gained casual employment locally, stayed engaged in TAFE and has also gained a number of welding qualifications through opportunities with Tilbuster Station.

ow long have you lived in Armidale? Tell us about your family ...

I was born in Armidale and have lived here my whole life. I attended St Mary’s Primary School, Duval High School and am now in Year 11 at Armidale High School.

I am the fifth of six children in my family. My dad works at Ducats, and my mum is a Dental Assistant.

When and why did you first become involved with dancing?

I began dancing at the age of six at Australian Dance Enterprises with Colette Brazier. Popular TV shows such as Hi-5 began my interest and love for dance, and I began taking recreational Jazz classes. At the age of nine I began taking ballet classes, as my love for dance grew. When 11 years old, I met Scottish ballet dancer, Tama Barry, who further inspired me to continue dancing and introduced me to the viable option of becoming a professional dancer.

Through this contact I started travelling to Sydney to attend Ecole Ballet and Dance Theatre, with whom I have continued to attend classes and workshops on a casual basis whilst still attending Australian Dance Enterprises (ADE).

that I hope to dance to one day. My youngest brother, Sam, pushes me with acrobatics. My mum and dad work really hard to support my dance dream and my employers, Kmart and Armidale Community Preschool, allow me to juggle paid employment with dance commitments.

My friends are my greatest support and my costume maker, Pat Nield, is my biggest fan (next to Mum). My grandma has also given me a lot support over the years. She would always walk me to dance class and still sews the elastics on my ballet shoes.

What are your other interests?

Other interests include: spending time with family, going to the gym with my oldest sister and hanging out with the best friendship group that I have ever had at Armidale High School. I am also interested in the Apple Company and their products and I have several pets. I also enjoy assistant teaching baby ballet with Miss Colette.

Plans for the future?

I plan to complete my HSC at Armidale High school whilst travelling to Sydney to prepare for an audition for the pre professional year at Sydney Dance Company. I ultimately aim to become a professional dancer based in a company.

Having a disability can sometimes be challenging, but with our services and support, we can make things a little easier for young people and their families. We’ll work in partnership with you and your child or young person to understand their personal goals and support them in working towards the life they want to lead.

We are able to provide before and after school support, as well as on weekends. You can choose what your support looks like and how often you need support, depending on what would best meet your family’s needs and what funding

is available. That might mean support in your family home, out in the community or based at the House with No Steps Armidale hub.

We are also able to assist families in getting ready for the roll out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in the New England region from July 2016. We can help you and your child to: • Understand the NDIS and how it works • Find out if you’re eligible • Identify goals and aspirations that the NDIS may fund • Guide you through the application process • Gather the documents you’ll need to complete your application.

More than 57 years ago, a group of parents from Tamworth got together to establish a working group to provide support for their children and young people with a disability.

Today, Challenge Community Services continues this legacy and vision to support people of all ages and backgrounds across multiple programmes and locations.

Challenge Choices recently expanded its Armidale footprint, officially opening the Connexions Tech Hub and Café in November last year. This space has been created for young people with a disability to learn new skills and socialise with one another in a supportive environment. Connexions is designed especially for younger people between the ages of 18 and 30 to deliver an independent, participantfocused and outcome driven programme.

Activities provided through Connexions are based on individual needs, goals and aspirations.

Imagination is the only limitation!

In 2013, Challenge Children’s Services was established to provide residential support, foster care and respite services to young people living in the Armidale community. Currently, Challenge supports more than 37 foster children and 18 carers across the region.

Challenge CEO Barry Murphy said the organisation was proud to uphold a strong reputation of disability leadership and advocacy in the Armidale area and with the National Disability Insurance Scheme to roll out in the region in July, it is important locals have a familiar face to turn to.

“Through a variety of different programmes within the Armidale area, we hope to continue to provide a quality and supportive service to people with a disability, foster children, their carers and families for many years to come,” he said.

D

o you go it alone, rock up in the country of your dreams and plan from there? Or do you pre-plan a little bit, book a couple of things for when you arrive, but still travel solo (or with your partner of choice) and do your own thing and drive where and when the feeling takes you?

Or do you choose a tour, sit back and let the driver and the tour guide lead you through each country?

“Tours” these days are a lot different to “tours” of say 10 or 15 years ago. No longer, when you choose to travel with a tour company, do you have to sit on the one large 50 seater coach with 40 or so other people, stopping for a night here and a night there before being whisked off to the next amazing city.

Tours have developed and adapted as travellers’ needs have developed and changed.

Don’t get me wrong, you can still do the 11 countries in 22 days, and people who choose this option generally have a ball and come home with all the boxes ticked.

But the great thing about tours these days is the vast choice you have. ell us about your fast paced life before making your tree change to the New England…

I was born and raised in the inner suburbs of Sydney and was a typical “career woman”. I spent much of my career in hospitality, moving into training for a large corporation. I juggled work and family, raising two children, and spending a significant time as a single parent, moving to the Central Coast commuting four days a week as a manager of a call centre. A mortgage and two children meant I worked shift work while my husband commuted to Sydney for his day job, picking up the children from Family Day Care each night while I was at work. We juggled nappies, bottles and packed lunches for a lot of years, weathering the mortgage interest rates which soared to 18%! It was hectic!

At what moment did you come to the conclusion that living in the corporate world was no longer for you?

After having my second child, I started work part-time at the call centre for some extra money. After six months I was approached by the State Operations Manager, who asked if I would consider managing the call centre full-time. It was an easy decision, as not working full-time had significantly cut into our budget (and I also had background with the operations).

At the time, the call centre was turning over around $12m a year. In the first six months

THE NATIONAL DISABILITY INSURANCE SCHEME (THE NDIS)... A NEW WAY OF FUNDING DISABILITY SERVICES AND SUPPORTS IN AUSTRALIA.

T

he Ascent Group has been preparing for the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme, ensuring we are able to continue to provide quality support to people with disability. The national roll out of the scheme is now only three months away, with the New England region beginning the transition from 1st July 2016.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme is a ground-breaking change to the way disability services are funded and delivered.

The targeted individual support and early intervention approach of the NDIS means people with disability will be able to participate and learn more at school, go to TAFE and university and get jobs that use their skills and enable them to contribute productively.

Enabling more people with disabilities to enter paid employment will have a positive flow-on effect and relieve the need to rely on a lifetime of unpaid support by families. More family carers will then also be able to re-enter the workforce.

What’s it all about?

The NDIS supports people with significant and permanent disability that adversely affects how they can take part in everyday activities.

By developing individualised and personal support plans with NDIS participants, the Scheme takes into account the circumstances of families and carers, as well as the person with disability.

The greatest strength of the NDIS is that it puts choice and control over the support received into the hands of the person with disability.

The NDIS will improve the lives of people with disability and their families through personal, individualised planning and co-ordination of the information, access and support the person with disability needs to live the life they want.

An NDIS planner will help to bring it all together. It is the planner’s job to assist people with disability to put in place the disability support arrangements needed to live a better life.

With a planner’s help, a person with disability can think about what the current and future needs and goals are. A plan can be made for the immediate and longer term needs and as circumstances change over time, the planner can help to make the changes that suit each 52 new england focus.

ome hot news from the UK last month was that a particular supermarket chain is now to sell only straight croissants.

Curved ones are apparently “too hard to fit jam on easily”. As “croissant” means “crescent”, it seems to rather undercut the whole principle and history of the thing. Well, whatevs, as they say.

Of course, most EU member states had already committed to only selling straight bananas and vegetables; the others were seen as “imperfect” and maybe harder to pack.

But what a curious rule, Alice would have thought, with offenders even unable to be sold as seconds, so simply thrown away. Now it seems that with world shortages of food, such rules for fruit and vegetables are considered inappropriate and a majority of EU states have voted for reform. Such bureaucratic regulations should surely all be subject to review with a big red pencil and the stern eyes of common sense.

A curious thought occurred to me recently, when gravitational waves were discovered.

To my untrained ear they sounded just like whale song - perhaps an echo of the ending of that marvellous series The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, when the dolphins disappeared into space leaving the cryptic message, “So long, and thanks for all the fish”? (That was just before Earth was demolished to make way for a hyperspace bypass … ) Perhaps, as Dame Edna would say, those gravitational wave sounds are “sort of kind of spooky… !”

The curious television series Ultimate Airport Dubai shows us that in a world of shrinking jobs, this airport employs 60,000 people. Roll on the Armidale airport redevelopment.

Again curiously, as we’ve been conscientiously buying up our low fat items in the supermarket, we are now told that this can lead to weight gain, rather than the reverse.

This is Alice Through the Looking Glass stuff, as apparently the sugar is piled in for taste, plus people eat or drink so much more because

they feel emptier. Oh yes, it’s hard to win in this curious world!

English columnist Rory Sutherland recently pointed out that “5% of people get to decide everything”. If that sounds curious, consider an example: if one dinner guest has a food intolerance, it usually affects everyone’s menu.

And of course, this is thoughtful and sensitive and not really a problem, but if you take the same example philosophically into other fields such as political policies, then it can start to get much more complex. Well of course, politics world-wide couldn’t get curiouser and curiouser than it seems at the moment.

In a world that is absolutely dependent on clean water, it’s hardly curious that the US financial guru Warren Buffett is buying up water options. It’s just worrying. And as I’ve been writing this, someone on the radio is talking about “surveillance capitalism”, where your phone knows where you are and tries to profit from it. Your phone is very curious about you. And when an SMH Businessday Opinion is headlined Banking on ethics is risky business, is it just me - or is that a curious headline?

It has to be good for us to be curious about the way things happen around us. Perhaps it will make us content with what we have, or perhaps it will make us alarmed about things we should be aware of. Perhaps it will make us braver, and think more about the “whys” and what we can do to improve them. Chapter 2, where Alice cried, “Curiouser and curiouser”, was titled The Pool of Tears.

But never forget that the book took place in Wonderland, as overall we count our blessings here. I really mean it.

What are some of your big challenges?

Maintaining employment for our ever growing business is always going to be a challenge.

Unfortunately, we cannot rely on the local population to sustain our growth. So we must look further than just moving people in and out of the Armidale area. With everyone now accessing the internet, our competitors are not just local people, but every other removal company in Australia.

But, this also works to our advantage. We have access to more opportunities.

The majority of our office staff members are also experienced in every facet of the business, including the packing of fragiles, loading furniture and even the driving of the semi trailers.

We now employ a qualified mechanic who is also an experienced removalist and driver, giving us plenty of backup should any situation arise.

We provide motel accommodation for all our drivers and off siders, and this enables them to be well rested when away from their homes and loved ones.

It is important to us for our workers to look clean and fresh for the benefit of our customers.

What is your specialty?

That’s a hard question, as we don’t really have one specialty. We offer a few services that we specialise in - one being our Sydney pickup and

delivery service, that we do all over Sydney every week. Some weeks we have three to four trucks running around picking up small items, from one chair to full house lots.

Our Brisbane run starts in Sydney, collecting and delivering items back through Armidale then on to Brisbane and surrounding areas, usually returning home via the coast.

Our Melbourne run is increasing all the time, and plans for a weekly trip is in the foreseeable future.

Another area we specialise in is the North West, collecting new furniture from Sydney and Brisbane, mainly from manufacturers and retailers, and delivering to houses as well as offices and business around Gunnedah, Narrabri Moree and Inverell.

We have had special equipment manufactured wholly for these items, as some of the pianos we have relocated cost more than your average car!

What inspires you?

Seeing our children and family working with great motivation is very encouraging.

Our son, Greg, and his wife Shari are doing a remarkable job in the office, and Andrew, who is the first driver chosen for a large or delicate move, is also doing a remarkable job.

Personally, customer appreciation of your hard work is what inspires me. As moving can be stressful and a laborious chore, it is fulfilling to know you have achieved your goal: to make your customer happy.

How long have you been in the industry?

As my dad, Alan Cameron (or Camo as he was better known) was a furniture removalist, I was destined to follow in his footsteps. Dad and I did many trips together as I was growing up, starting very young, probably only seven or eight. School holidays and weekends were exciting times for a young lad moving all over Australia.

I left school to work full-time with dad in 1977 and have not ventured away from this industry since.

What are some of the highlights of your job?

The big trips are the most exciting!

I have been to Cairns and Cooktown a few times on long trips, but just recently took a load to Perth and also to Darwin. There are a lot of memorable places like Wentworth near Mildura, at the junction of the Darling and Murray Rivers.

The sun coming up at Eucla on the Nullarbor is a sight to behold. We once put a truck on a barge at Airlie Beach and delivered to Hayman Island (we were arooned on the island for two days; horrible!)

Trips to Tasmania on the boat. We have also delivered to “Wrothan Park”, a 59,600 Hectare property in Cape York.

We also have a client in the same exclusive harbourside units that Russell Crowe and John Laws reside in; I guess these are highlights.

Plans for the future?

Short term plans are to keep building this business to prosper and improve. Long term is to keep it sustainable, so I can hand over the management and operations to my sons.

At the moment we have remarkable staff; our sons are invaluable to the business. But we also have the fortune of having John Allingham here to help with the management, as his knowledge in this business is immense.

So plans for the future are looking very good.

Thinking Building Disputes with Morgan Quaife (Solicitor)

BUILDING DISPUTES Building a new home or having extensions or renovations carried out on an existing home can be an exciting prospect.

I

f you are a builder, contractor or tradesperson chances are private residential building work will consume most of if not all of your time and labour and contribute a vast proportion of your income. Given the amount time, money and resources put into the planning and construction of a project it is not surprising that the process can often be stressful and turn out to be more expensive than originally intended.

Unfortunately disputes can arise between home owner and builder in which case you may have initiate proceedings in the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT) or defend a claim against you.

Ways to help prevent building disputes Home owners and builders can reduce the chances of a building dispute arising by taking a number of preventative steps and measures.

Some things you can do include: • Ensure that any prospective builder or tradesperson is qualified to carry out the desired work. You can conduct a licence check on the Fair Trading website or by calling 13 32 20. A tradesperson must be licenced for all residential building work valued at more than $5,000 in labour and materials and all specialist work such as electrical and plumbing work regardless of its cost.

• Always check with Council to see if Development Application approval is needed prior to commencing building work. It may be the case that the proposed work is exempt from DA approval because the scope of work is only minor. It is prudent that you check the zoning, locations, restrictions and heritage status of the land.

• For any work to be carried out over the value $20,000, It is essential that builders ensure that they obtain a Certificate of Insurance from the Home Building Compensation Fund.

Under the Home Building Act 1989, it is an offence for any builder to commence work on a property or demand payments for work over $20,000 without first obtaining Home Warranty Insurance. Homeowners should ask their builder for as copy of the Certificate of Insurance before any work is commenced or a deposit is paid.

• The contract should always be set in writing.

The NSW Fair Trading Website provides free

contract templates for both small and large jobs.

It is highly advisable to use these contracts as they provide for and contain provisions relating to specifications, plans and descriptions of the work, quality of contractions clauses, clauses stipulating that the work must comply with Building Codes and Australian Standards, a statement relating to a cooling-off period, statutory warranties, termination clauses, contract prices and progress payment plans.

What should you do if a building dispute arises?

If matters cannot be resolved between the parties themselves, NSW Fair Trading should be contacted. NSW Fair Trading can carry out investigations and assist in finding a compromise between the parties. If the parties are still in disagreement, you may have to file a claim with NCAT. Preparing such application requires careful attention, skill and expertise. Legal proceedings are often very complex and while individuals may represent themselves, it may be in your best interest to retain a solicitor to process and prepare the great number of forms such as Affidavits and Scott Schedules, retain and brief expert building experts, research case law and legislation, brief barristers (if required) and ensure compliance with Tribunal procedures to be adhered to.

Seeking Legal Representation If you believe you have suffered a wrong or loss, or if a building dispute or claim is being made against you that cannot be resolved, you should contact your solicitor as soon as possible.

Statutory time limits apply for all claims. To assist your solicitor in preparing and presenting your case to the Tribunal you should prepare a statement of your version of event containing a timeline of key events, quotes as to what was said during important conversations and greater detail about what you saw, heard or experienced. You should also collect all relevant documents and names and contact details of any witnesses to the incident(s) or events.

Such action may reduce the time involved for a solicitor and lead to savings in costs as well as increase the likelihood of achieving your desired outcome.
