also enjoyed working with woollen fibres and had contacts who sold me wholesale yarns. My inspiration grew further.

Maree Knows folded up and in its place I set up my own business, Mollydale Knits.

I had several women knitting for me while I dyed and felted the hats. For several years I exhibited at the Australian Craft Show and the Sydney Easter Show, selling felted hats and hand dyed yarns.

I was also supplying shops around the country.

Tell us about the process?

My method for dyeing the yarn is pretty basic. Water is brought to boiling point in electric vats, and the dye is ‘taken up’ by the yarn. Some skeins are dyed several times. It’s pretty time consuming but the results can be very pleasing.

What do you love most about what you do?

My workspace is on my veranda, recently set up as part of a renovation, to enable me to work at home, with vats bubbling away. And the view is wonderful! I’m somewhat hyperactive: I can have twenty jobs on the go about the place while I’m dyeing yarns. I’m pretty lucky. Creating colourways is what I love to do and this work has sustained me over the years — it’s not just about the income. To ‘loose oneself’ creating a wonderful, colourful product — and earning an income from it — yes I’m really lucky.

How is hand dying different to factory processing?

Hand dyeing gives a different quality to the yarn. My vats are not huge, therefore dye lots are not large, but they will be unique. This is why it’s important, when purchasing hand dyed yarns, to

buy more than you think you’ll need because repeating the colourway in the multi coloured range, to be exactly like another lot, is impossible. Often quirky colour combinations can result in a very interesting pattern when knitted, creating a beautiful effect. My yarns are sold at the Uralla Wool Room. I also sell the yarn wholesale to shops and craft groups around Australia.

You have owned the Uralla Wool Room for ten years now, tell us about this business?

In 2006, I purchased the Uralla Wool Room from Margot Fleming. The shop sells merino wool and natural fibre garments, and accessories. Much of what we sell is manufactured in Australia. I’ve extended the business by selling yarns, and running knitting classes at the shop.

Plans for the future?

Recently we have increased the range of yarns and patterns and I have more plans to extend the area at the back of the building for a display area for yarns, patterns and accessories. The hope is to have space to accommodate larger knitting and crochet groups as numbers are increasing.

The knitting and crochet groups have been meeting for several months now.

Many wonderful creations have been started and completed. We hope the word will spread and more people will take to opportunity to join the groups — it’s an opportunity to sit and create and discuss your projects with others who share your interests. It’s a time to enjoy a couple of hours away from what is often a hectic life for many us!

hen and why did you first get involved in yarn dying?

In the 70s I had an opportunity to work in a shearing shed as rouse-about and general shedhand. I helped out for three shearing seasons and loved it! The property grew superfine merino wool and at the end of the shearing I was given some of the coloured fleeces. This was a wonderful gift and opportunity — I immediately decided to learn how to spin.

At the time I was living in Sydney’s inner west and had found a shop in Crown Street Surrey Hills that sold spinning wheels, looms and all things associated with the craft. I purchased an Ashford spinning wheel. As it turned out, learning to spin with merino superfine was not easy — I was at the point of throwing the wheel out the window! However, I found a teacher who helped me get started. Much better to be shown the correct way by someone who knows. So, from there I was up and running.

My interest grew and a natural progression was to start dyeing the yarn.

This was work I could do at home while my children were young. During this time, I started a business with a friend, we called our label Maree Knows, and we made garments from hand spun, hand-dyed yarns. Fair isle patterns were mostly what we did. They looked great and we sold them at The Rocks in Sydney.

It was fortuitous that my aunt who was then living in Tasmania sent me a pattern to make knitted/felted hats. She

ippies vs hipsters, real life chat vs SnapChat; a lot has changed in the last couple of decades, but there’s one thing we can agree on - and it’s not the definition of LOL (it really doesn’t mean “lots of love”). For millennials it’s going to take more than “getting a good job with good money” to get into today’s housing market. But thanks anyway, Mr Hockey.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), the mean house price in NSW is approximately 21 per cent above the national average1.

Combined with the ever rising cost of living, this means it’s getting really hard for first home buyers to save for a deposit.

While there’s no denying earlier generations had it hard too, the following puts the current situation into perspective: ABC recently published an article2 based on Demographia’s Annual Survey, which found that Australia is second to Hong Kong for housing costs; the typical Australian house cost being 5.6 times the median household income.

This, according to the Australian Financial Review3 has pushed the Australian housing price to income ratio to almost double what it was around 1980, possibly when you were buying your first home. It is here we begin to understand why your child may be facing the seemingly impossible task of saving for a deposit in today’s housing market.

So, what can you do to help if you have loved ones struggling to get into the current housing market?

Familiar with the concept of a home loan guarantee? In today’s economic climate, the service is quite pertinent. Basically, it involves parents offering equity in their home as security for their child’s loan. Equity is the difference between the market value of your property and the amount you still owe on your home loan.

Historically, guarantees have held negative connotations due to the associated risk. You might have seen that recently the Sydney Morn-

ing Herald4 touched on this, along with other key factors to take into consideration when thinking about a guarantee.

But here’s something they didn’t mention and you might not have thought of.

hat is The Mikado?

The Mikado is one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s best known and loved collaborations. It has fabulous melodies all the way through, interesting tongue in cheek story lines and a cast of comic characters with some rather silly names.

Gilbert and Sullivan collaborated on fourteen operettas together, which are short, comic operas that usually included spoken dialogue, songs and dancing. They used their operettas as a way to poke fun at British life and period politics.

Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado, or The Town of Titipu, premiered in 1885. A Mikado was a Japanese emperor, while Titipu refers to a fictional Japanese town in which the story takes place.

The Mikado focuses upon a humorous romantic triangle that revolves around its three main characters: Ko-Ko: the Lord High Executioner, Nanki-Poo: Ko-Ko's friend, Yum-Yum: Ko-Ko's fiancé, who eventually marries Nanki-Poo. The 2016 Armidale Autumn Festival is fast approaching and planning is well underway.

Some of the highlights for the weekend include:

Friday Afternoon/ Evening

It’s shaping up to be a fun afternoon for all ages down by the Creeklands.

Lots of delicious food to tempt your taste buds, a variety of stalls to browse, live music and plenty of carnival rides to keep the kids and young at heart occupied. Live music will be provided by local group Rough Justice from 5.30pm - 8.30pm.

Saturday

Saturday begins early with the sound of the starter’s gun in the annual Campus to City Canter. Edwards Buses leave the Visitors Information Centre at 7.05am and 7.35am for the start line at Sport UNE at 8am. After a successful canter join the Armidale City Band and their famous Pancake Breakfast while taking in the sounds of the brass band.

The Mass Pipe Band in the Mall from 11am will send shivers down your spine before getting ready for the Grand Parade at 12.30pm and watching our community come together to celebrate Autumn and our diverse and colourful community. This year’s theme is ‘Armidale’s own Legends of Sport’ and the floats will be a blaze of colour and pride. The afternoon provides yet more entertainment in the Creeklands with market stalls, carnival rides, community displays and entertainment including X-Factor musician Michaela Baranov.

Super Saturday will finish in a blaze of colour and to say thank you to our community, with a fireworks display.

The only Bike Criterium left in Australia will commence from 8am – line the mall and cheer on the riders as they take on Armidale’s CBD. This year the Armidale Cycle Club is celebrating 12 years of the event. This is a wonderful spectacle with an estimated 100+ riders taking on the streets over various categories.

Michaela Baranov Michaela Baranov won our hearts earlier this year, performing Sia’s ‘My Love’ in her X-Factor Audition and continuing on to make the Top 7. But this incredibly talented woman has been wowing crowds for much, much longer.

Her list of accomplishments is long (going back to 2007) and filled with names and places that you would not expect from such a young artist.

She has performed shows in America, France, Greece and Dubai, where she secured a three-month contract at the Waldorf Astoria doing three 40-minute sets, six nights a week.

Her dedication and passion for performing is evident every time she takes the stage. There is no doubt in our minds that there are BIG things in store for this amazing starlet!

After winning the ACMF National Songwriting Competition in 2007, Michaela travelled overseas in her early 20’s to further her career. A six-week trip turned into three years.

ow long has framing been available at Gallery 126?

The framing was the original and only part of the business when Anne and Stuart Boggs first purchased it 17 years ago. Stuart had worked with the previous owners for six years prior to that. The full title of the business is Armidale Framing & Art Supplies - Gallery One Two Six. Rather a mouthful, which is why it is often shortened to Gallery 126, or sometimes Stuart’s Place - the latter not being reflective of the other two people who make up the “team”.

The matboard and any extra design element used, are assembled with the artwork.

The glass is then cleaned and the artwork is carefully placed into the frame, which is finally sealed with tape to keep all the dust and gremlins out. This part of the process can be the most frustrating, as the work is all assembled face down. There is nothing more annoying to a framer, than assembling it all together, turning it over, and finding a speck of something up against the inside of the glass! The turning over is also the most exciting, as you get the wow effect of seeing all the ideas coming together.

he Uralla sky is soon to be alive with the wonder of light, tell us about the history of the Uralla Lantern Parade. When - and how did it all begin?

The Uralla Lantern Parade was born on Australia Day 2007 when, as part of the celebrations in Uralla’s Alma Park, a small group of children and adults tried their hand at making decorative paper lanterns. While the results were sometimes far from perfectly formed, the resulting spectacle - when the lanterns were lit and paraded around the bandstand after dark - was truly enchanting. It seemed to evoke all our ancestral human affinity with light and fire.

It was so inspiring, in fact, that over the subsequent years - with the assistance of the Lismore-based lantern-makers Light’nUp - the annual Lantern Parade became a real Uralla phenomenon.

Does the Lantern Parade celebrate a different theme each year?

The underlying theme has always been the wonder of light, and we see that wonder reflected in the faces of the watching - and participating - children. In addition, the Parade has an environmental focus, and has always been scheduled to coincide with the global recognition of Earth Hour. That focus has been sharpened since our town’s selection in 2014 as the case study town for the Z-NET project, which could see Uralla become the first town in Australia to achieve the target of using 100 per cent renewable energy.

The Lantern Parade unites the Uralla community in a magical family event. The many facets of its preparation and presentation bring together people of all ages and from all sections of the community. It attracts spectators and participants from other towns in the region.

Held in collaboration this year with Seasons of New England, and in conjunction with Uralla’s annual Rotary Arts Exhibition, the Lantern Parade helps to highlight our town’s remarkable creative and cooperative vigour. It has attracted the generous and continued sponsorship of Phoenix Foundry and Uralla Shire Council, for which we’re very grateful.

The Family Fishing and Fun Day is the brainchild of Paula and Wayne Poss, who had been thinking about a fundraiser for the Cancer Council for some time and as they have now finished all their building and landscaping on their block of land on the outskirts of Uralla, they decided they were now sufficiently set up to host such a day.

When Paula and Wayne found out there was a Uralla branch of CAN ASSIST, they decided that they would direct the proceeds of the day to that organisation rather than directly to the Cancer Council, and they then approached the Uralla committee to virtually oversee the day, with Paula, Wayne, myself and members of The Baitwasters Fishing Club to organise the programme of events.

The 12th March was selected, because it did not clash with quite a few other local events that have been scheduled for March and early April - but having said that, we now find that it clashes with the first round of the Uralla Golf Club Championships. But, this should not detract from our event to any great extent, as anyone who wants to play golf can schedule an early start and then come out to this event.

ew England Tech Fest returns on the 31 March for three days at the Bowling Club, with over 30 exhibitors showcasing the latest in IT, including representatives from Microsoft, a gaming competition, and a myriad of other technology displays.

Music and theatre enthusiasts haven’t been forgotten, with performances such as Armidale Symphony Orchestra and Choir Concert, Bye Bye Birdie at the Hoskin Centre, and The Mikado performed at Langford Homestead.

Art exhibitions showing this month include the 39th Annual Rotary Arts Exhibition in Uralla, and NERAM has a variety of exhibitions this month, including Bimblebox-art-science-nature and an exhibition from a local painter Rosalie Rigby titled Our Threatened Land.

This year’s Autumn Festival has something for everyone. Friday night kicks off with the Twilight Festival, including Rough Justice performing from 5:30, markets and plenty of carnival rides. Saturday commences with the all popular Armidale City Band Pancake Breakfast and the Campus to City Canter. The festivities continue with the Massed Pipe Bands, the Autumn Festival Grand Parade and the Fun Fair and Street Market continuing ‘til 8pm. X Factor musician Michaela Baranov will be performing on Saturday night, followed by a massive fireworks display. On Sunday morning, come and see the Autumn Festival Criterion Bike Race and then wander over to the Armidale Farmers’ Markets in Curtis Park. The Armidale Cup will be held at the racecourse on Monday.

COEN’S CIRCLE AT NERAM

In an era when it was difficult for women artists to forge a career, Margaret Coen was able to create a large body of work which has stood the test of time.

N

ow you can discover the works of artist Margaret Coen (1909 - 1993) in the exhibition Coen’s Circle, currently on show at the New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM). Coen’s Circle has been made possible by the generosity of her daughter, author Meg Stewart, who donated a large body of her mother’s work to the New England Regional Art Museum in 2010.

Margaret was developing her reputation as a talented water colourist

and flower painter when her work came to the attention of art collector Howard Hinton in the late 1930s and early ‘40s, and he purchased and then donated eleven of her pictures to the Armidale Teachers’ College, which are now in the collection at NERAM. Margaret Coen was born in Yass in 1909 and studied at the Royal Art Society School in Sydney in the 1930s; artist Norman Lindsay was also a mentor, teacher and close personal friend and during her long career as an

artist, she won numerous awards.

The exhibition combines her paintings, watercolours, fabrics, drawings and sketchbooks with the poetry of her husband Douglas Stewart and a range of personal memorabilia.

Coen’s Circle is on show at the New England Regional Art Museum until 1 May 2016 and is also part of the 2016 National Trust Heritage Festival.

URALLA ROTARY ART EXHIBITION Plans are well under way for the opening of the 39th Annual Uralla Rotary Art Exhibition, to be held at the Memorial Hall, Salisbury Street, Uralla.

The club expects to display near to 500 artworks, from artists across NSW and southern Queensland.

pening night, which is the social event of the year, is Friday 11th March at 6:30pm for Official Opening at 7:30pm by Uralla Mayor, Councillor Michael Pearce. Well known guest artist Yvonne Overton will be present on the night with an impressive display of her art, one of which she has donated to raffle.

an you give us a snapshot of how the day, and the evening, is coming together?

The Seasons Expo is a creative space like no other. We seek out those businesses with products to fall in love with, and this includes products across every imaginable category. As a fully licensed event, it includes access to some of the best “drinks” around, with craft beer, cool climate wines by the glass and cocktails at the bar all part of the mix.

The Expo is on Saturday 19th March, runs from 9am - 4pm, and you can choose from plenty of hearty and delicious gourmet fare to sample while shopping. The Altitude coffee cart will be onsite from 9am until late, and the Seasons Bar will operate from 10am - 10pm.

Throughout the Expo there will be demonstrations and information sessions, lantern decorating opportunities and, of course, great live music from 9am - 9pm.

Uralla Heritage Walks and experiences following the New England and Northwest Soundtrails Ap will be promoted and explained at the McCrossin’s Mill stall.

And the post Expo celebrations include?

From 4pm onwards we are serving up local Graze Plates, and from 5pm a Producer’s Plate (two courses, featuring local spit roast lamb). These dining options are

We have a dedicated children’s marquee, where there will be treasures to take home and plenty of creative fun to enjoy on the day. Our Little Lunch Plates provide a simple way to plan lunch for the little ones and include a sandwich from the Uralla CWA, fruit from Greenhill Orchards and a milk popper (water is freely available at a number of stalls).

There are lots of shady spaces, which will be gently lit at night, and plenty of seating both during the day and into the evening. Sunny spots too, with our signature outdoor pallet seating out for

Why is the Seasons Expo so important for the New England?

This is a day where people who have been dreaming big and working hard, get to show everyone what they are passionate about. The products are a reflection of bursts of creativity, of inspired decisions and often a little bit of luck. They are all the result of long hours and commitment. It can be infectious and definitely lends itself to a unique shopping experience. But more than that, rural communities are built by enterprises that start on the kitchen table or in the shed, and become successful and viable businesses. They often become much more than that, and the Seasons Expo provides an opportunity to discover some of the up and coming businesses from our region, as well as the more established. How have you created your own business opportunities? I focus on both community engagement and on business networking. What have been your biggest challenges?

When we launched, it quickly became clear that there was significant unmet demand. So rather than a gentle ramping up of demand over a period of time, I had to hit the ground running.

Fortunately, today’s clients are increasingly coming to see me to review their HR risk so we can head off problems before they become a serious issue. This is important, as ignorance isn’t a defence under the law and for too many businesses, their staff know more about their rights and obligations than they do.

What was your best investment when you first started up? A lot of start-ups wait for

a year or two before investing in professional services such as accounting, legal, HR and marketing. I wanted to have solid foundations for my business from the start. One of the more visible things I did was invest in brand strategy.

I wanted to have my business and its direction clearly articulated from the outset, and I wanted the business’ branding and communications to reflect that from day one. This has really supported my growth.

Which business women inspire you? Anita Roddick, founder of the Body Shop, because she began with a concern for community and advocated for ethical consumerism. She inspired me to think about how HR services could support growing and sustainable regionally-based businesses and communities.

And what’s your superpower? I’m a company’s best defence against inadvertently breaching their employment obligations.

ell us a bit about yourself ...

I grew up on the North Shore of Sydney and scratched my way up to management level in marketing and recruitment, mainly in the tourism sector. I have travelled the world and Australia extensively both with work and personally. If I were to revisit anywhere, it would be Petra, Jordan. That place took my breath away, and Italy is still firmly entrenched on my bucket list.

In 2005 I was stagnant, bored, and tired of suits and high heels. This, coupled with my lack of agreeable option to buy into the Sydney market, became my aha moment. So, I stopped and bought a ‘50s red brick home in Nowra and, bingo, in the same year I achieved my greatest honour and my son, Charlie emerged into the world.

In 2007 I opened my first business, which was a retail outlet called Melrose Parade, despite some negativity. This decision allowed me to pool together my work experience from the corporate world and successfully embark on my dream to own my own business, with the freedom to inject some creativity in my work life - which was what I always yearned to do more of. Art was my passion at school, and I was always at my best when I was creating something.

From Nowra I opened two more stores (both in Terrigal), which meant I had to rent an apartment there. This was where Love Bomb Designs was brought to life. As a very adamant landlord gave me strict instructions that nothing was to touch the walls of my rental, not even blue tack, I knew I had to find a way, as being an décor design addict this was not good news to my

ears. In 2013 I moved to Uralla NSW, bought a tiny 100 year old cottage that I renovated, well am still renovating (does it ever end?) and spend the majority of my time designing the range, developing the packaging and forecasting the strategies of Love Bomb moving forward.

At the end of 2014 I opened a pop up store with my friend Felicity Nivison, who owns Letto Bello Linen, and our little pop up store grew into Highland Living Uralla.

Tell us more about your first wall dot; what was the process for creating your first one, and what was the design?

Initially I designed two, which I keep in the range as my signature designs. I wanted a stag type one in neutrals for my lounge room and a sort of vintage floral that popped a bit of colour for my bedroom. It was not an easy process. It took about six months to find the images I could work with and how to edit like a pro, track down the adhesive fabric that worked, who could print them and what sizes would work best. When the day came to order, I added extra for my stores, and as I secretly expected, they were a bit of a hit.

When it comes to designing, where do you find inspiration?

I believe my travels and experiences fuel my designs, and my personal style drives them. I find inspiration in many ways, but a few of those would be when I take a break from the routine of life, when I read or watch a story of an inspirational person, or when I am in the company of creative driven friends and loved ones talking about our mutual goals in life.

What is the process for manufacturing the wall dots? Is it all completed here in Uralla?

Initially they were being printed in Melbourne, but after much collaboration with Thunder

Graphics I was able to move the entire process to little Uralla town, which I get great satisfaction out of. Production has increased, so now I am also using Armidale City Signs to do some of the printing, especially now with the canvas range.

You’ve introduced a series of canvases and wall hangings to your catalogue; what else is on the horizon?

OK, I have Wylde and Wyse, Uralla, who are the suppliers of the soaps I carry in Highland Living, making a range of high end soy candles that we are still at the table with. We are going to pour them into handmade cement tumblers, and they will be branded under the Love Bomb Designs umbrella. I have also designed a range of linen tea towels that will be released in mid 2016, and I aim to have my own range of cushions and throws in store ready for the Christmas rush. I know, I know who talks about Christmas in February, but we retailers have to plan ahead.

As a business woman and a mother, how do you keep a work/life balance?

A big part of my decision to move here was so that I could maintain a balance. Up until my move to Uralla, Charlie was such a patient little off-sider, spending so much time in the stores, or on the road with me. I tried to spend quality time with him, but it wasn't happening. By moving here, I knew I could structure a life where I could give Charlie more time, but still set a good work ethic example for him. I also moved here so that Charlie could go to a good school and enrolled him in The Armidale School. I would not have opened Highland Living if I didn't have Felicity as a business partner. We manage the working relationship seamlessly, allowing each other the flexibility to tend to family commitments and our businesses’ needs. As we share

a passion for creativity and interior design, we really bounce well off each other as our individual businesses grow. We also love that we can showcase other designers and artists from the region in Highland Living.

I think you have to keep in the back of your mind that your hard work needs reward, and take some down time. My partner and I both have our own businesses and kids, and have worked hard all our lives, so we decided this year to take five weeks off and travel up to Darwin, camping in the National Parks (I just have to figure out how to operate my hair dryer on the road). I feel that this time will allow us the head space to reflect, forward plan and return to the table with renewed passion and energy.

Do you have any advice to give other women aiming to reach their goals?

Ignore at all costs negativity, tackle obstacles head on (they are a lesson) and under no circumstances listen to self doubt. Value your creative expression, happiness and strength (especially in transitional times), move forward gracefully, and remember we are all a work in progress.

What do you think the key to success is?

Be saddened by greed, validate your passions and dreams, acknowledge your successes in family and life as well as in business, don’t get overwhelmed by your to do list; instead, reflect on your achievements, cultivate the habit of being grateful, and hold the vision and trust the process.

Providing an environment where children can learn with joy is something I truly believe in. Our motto is “Playing is learning for life”, and our learning experiences are designed so that our children can most effectively learn through play, meet the required educational standards, and simply have great fun in a loving and supportive environment. One of our Uralla mums, Amanda Adams, described it best: “FUN! How have you created your own business opportunities? Firstly, in child care reputation

What have been your biggest challenges?

Eighteen months ago our business was shaky, not because we weren’t doing well, but because we were growing so fast we didn’t have the systems in place to support our

growth. We’d grown very quickly from one centre to two and then three and four. Thank goodness we found the professional support we needed in Armidale. We realised we needed to learn how to run a multi-site business so that it was sustainable and replicable, and we worked with our business coach, Diane Gray from Grayheart, who helped us work on systems and culture, and how to build great teams so that we can ensure that all of our centres have the same high quality standards and nurturing environment.

Which businesswoman inspires you and why? It’s surprisingly difficult to pick just one.

I started participating actively in a business networking group around 18 months ago, and the professional women I have found in that group have been tremendously inspiring, both professionally and personally.

Which superhero would you be? Captain Feathersword! He’s energetic and playful. He has a crew that all have bright and cheerful personalities, and he has a feather-sword for fun and spreading magic.

What’s your superpower? Building relationships and understanding the gifts each of our team and children have to give and helping them reach their fullest potential.

What’s ahead in 2016? We are focusing on updating our Uralla centre with an amazing new room for 0 - 2-year-olds, playground upgrades and bathroom facilities. In addition, we will be opening new services in Glen Innes, Tamworth and Port Macquarie. Our centres are custom designed and built, with natural landscapes designed to facilitate imaginative play, so it’s going to be a very big year - and, of course, an exciting one!

How have you created your own business opportunities? By realising that a family owned company based in a regional area must offer quality

product, innovation and service at an international level. Never compromise and always strive to improve. Technology and social media are both game changers in our industry.

I am most inspired by Sara Blakely, the founder of Spanx. She went from selling an undergarment that nobody would buy to having one of the largest underwear companies in America in just 15 years.

W

hen and why did you first get involved in yarn dyeing?

In the ‘70s I had an opportunity to work in a shearing shed as rouse-about and general shedhand. I helped out for three shearing seasons and loved it! The property grew superfine Merino wool and at the end of the shearing, I was given some of the coloured fleeces. This was a wonderful gift and opportunity - I immediately decided to learn how to spin.

At the time I was living in Sydney’s inner west and had found a shop in Crown Street Surrey Hills that sold spinning wheels, looms and all things associated with the craft. I purchased an Ashford spinning wheel. As it turned out, learning to spin with Merino superfine was not easy - I was at the point of throwing the wheel out the window! However, I found a teacher who helped me get started.

Much better to be shown the correct way by someone who knows. So, from there I was up and running.

My interest grew and a natural progression was to start dyeing the yarn.

This was work I could do at home while my children were young. During this time, I started a business with a friend; we called our label Maree Knows, and we made garments from hand spun, hand-dyed yarns. Fair isle patterns were mostly what we did. They looked great, and we sold them at The Rocks in Sydney.

It was fortuitous that my aunt, who was then living in Tasmania, sent me a pattern to make knitted/felted hats. She

also enjoyed working with woollen fibres and had contacts who sold me wholesale yarns. My inspiration grew further. Maree Knows folded up and in its place I set up my own business, Mollydale Knits.

I had several women knitting for me while I dyed and felted the hats. For several years I exhibited at the Australian Craft Show and the Sydney Easter Show, selling felted hats and hand dyed yarns.

I was also supplying shops around the country.

Tell us about the process ...

My method for dyeing the yarn is pretty basic. Water is brought to boiling point in electric vats, and the dye is “taken up” by the yarn. Some skeins are dyed several times. It’s pretty time consuming, but the results can be very pleasing.

What do you love most about what you do?

My workspace is on my verandah, recently set up as part of a renovation, to enable me to work at home, with vats bubbling away. And the view is wonderful! I’m somewhat hyperactive: I can have twenty jobs on the go about the place while I’m dyeing yarns. I’m pretty lucky.

Creating colourways is what I love to do, and this work has sustained me over the years - it’s not just about the income. To “lose oneself” creating a wonderful, colourful product - and earning an income from it - yes, I’m really lucky.

How is hand dyeing different to factory processing?

Hand dyeing gives a different quality to the yarn. My vats are not huge, therefore dye lots are not large - but they will be unique. This is why it’s important, when purchasing hand dyed yarns, to buy more than you think you’ll need, because

repeating the colourway in the multi coloured range to be exactly like another lot is impossible. Often quirky colour combinations can result in a very interesting pattern when knitted, creating a beautiful effect. My yarns are sold at the Uralla Wool Room. I also sell the yarn wholesale to shops and craft groups around Australia.

You have owned the Uralla Wool Room for ten years now; tell us about this business ...

In 2006 I purchased the Uralla Wool Room from Margot Fleming. The shop sells Merino wool and natural fibre garments and accessories. Much of what we sell is manufactured in Australia. I’ve extended the business by selling yarns, and running knitting classes at the shop.

Plans for the future?

Recently we have increased the range of yarns and patterns, and I have more plans to extend the area at the back of the building for a display area for yarns, patterns and accessories. The hope is to have space to accommodate larger knitting and crochet groups as numbers are increasing.

The knitting and crochet groups have been meeting for several months now.

Many wonderful creations have been started and completed. We hope the word will spread and more people will take the opportunity to join the groups it’s an opportunity to sit and create and discuss your projects with others who share your interests. It’s a time to enjoy a couple of hours away from what is often a hectic life for many us!

After school I commenced working for Elders Insurance in 2006. I have a gorgeous daughter, Imogen, who’s nearly 4. She has just started Pre-Kinder at PLC and loves going to the school that Mummy went to.

Tell us about your last 10 years at Elders Insurance: I started on a two year work based traineeship and studied a Certificate 3 in Financial Services/General Insurance.

After my traineeship, I became a Sales Support Officer responsible for general enquiries and office duties. Later when the business grew, I moved into processing insurance claims and product sales, which I found very interesting. The business then expanded in 2013 when we purchased Elders Insurance Tamworth and Gunnedah. This gave me the opportunity for promotion and to become the Group Insurance Services Manager and Armidale Office Manager. My role now is managing staff in all three offices, ensuring the standard we offer our clients remains nothing short of exceptional, debtors, and renewal management for the group.

What do you like about your job? Honestly, everything! What do I enjoy doing when not at work?

People looking to move, or who have recently relocated to Armidale, frequently visit the centre to gather information, and have a chat to a “local”. Welcome to Armidale packs have been established containing a wide variety of information to assist people in settling in, or alternatively, assist them in making a decision to relocate to our region. The favourite part of my role is having the opportunity to take visiting journalists on familiarisation trips of the region. This occasionally includes 4WD adventures through the beautiful New England High Country wilderness. It is a wonderful experience to be there when journalists witness the wonder of our gorges, national parks and waterfalls.

Business Vision for 2016 Our ultimate goal is for the New England High Country to be as well known and recognised as the Blue Mountains. We will continue to work collaboratively with the seven Councils that make up New England High Country and build on our current marketing campaigns; My Favourite Corner is a marketing campaign that is targeting motorbike riders, and this year we will commence our Outdoor Adventures marketing campaign.

The restoration and refurbishment of the Visitor Information Centre and transforming it from drab and daggy to a beautiful space that showcases our region was the first highlight of my role. The new centre enables visitors to readily find information, as well as beautiful imagery to entice visitors to explore the region.

What is my role at the Visitor Information Centre? As Co-Ordinator of the Visitor Information Centre, I am responsible for the day to day operation and management of 32 volunteers and staff. We look after on average 60,000 visitors per year, and these include visitors to Armidale, UNE students, new residents, local businesses, accommodation providers and Armidale locals. The Armidale Visitor Information Centre provides a wide range of information services, predominantly for visitors to the region as well as locals, businesses and people looking to relocate to the area. The information provided covers a range of topics and can be loosely classified as anything a visitor to the area (whether on business or pleasure) may require.

What do you specialise in? I am a physiotherapist with a special interest in treating patients with complex conditions. As a physiotherapist, I see a lot of preventable injuries and conditions. As a result, I saw the need for programmes focused on workplace assessment, risk prevention and wellbeing services. And so, Workhealth Australia was born. And it is not just about worker wellbeing. We help business improve their bottom line by reducing business risk and insurance costs and improving employee productivity.

What’s your role? I am owner/manager of Travel & Adventure 195 with my husband Neal - he looks after the Outdoor Adventure gear side, and I look after the travel side of things.

How long have you been in the industry? Too long! I started in Brisbane back in 1991, so I guess that makes it a silver jubilee year for me this year! I can’t really believe it’s been 25 years - they say time flies when you’re having fun, and most of the time this job is fun.

What do you love about your job? I really love the diversity of the job - no two clients want exactly the same thing, so it’s interesting and fun helping people realise their dreams. It’s not only people wanting to visit different places; people also have vastly different needs when it comes to what they want to do when they get to where they are going.

Who inspires you and why? Miles Franklin; she was born in 1879 in rural Australia, making a significant impact for woman against the odds - being both rural and a woman. She achieved this through hard work, tenacity, and a sharp intellect, underscored by obvious talent.

What lies ahead in 2016? I’m focused on building Workhealth Australia into a successful business and intend to expand in the Coffs Coast and New England North West areas and further afield.

How have you seen your industry change over the years? Like everything else and every other industry, it would have to be the internet that’s had the most impact, but I have to say all of it has been positive. I love that people go online to have a look at “what’s out there”, and then they come in and get me to put it all together for them. The internet is useful in a broad sense, but as most travellers know, if you book online, you’re on your own.

Know your Product, but First Know your Skin. As no two skins are alike, we always encourage our clients to seek a skin diagnosis in salon before considering a new cleanser. Someone who assumes they have oily skin may actually have a balanced combination skin; it’s important to understand your skin condition, so you can find the appropriate products to meet your individual needs. Having a skin diagnosis can help identify the condition of your skin i.e. pigmentation, dehydration, fine lines and the skincare solutions available to correct your concerns.

Cleanse Once in the Morning and Twice at

Night. We recommend clients to cleanse once in the morning and twice in the evening. Cleansing in the morning will help to regulate oil flow and improve the performance of your makeup. In the evening, your first cleanse will dissolve makeup and help wash away pollutants, whilst the second cleanse will regulate oil flow and balance your skin.

Cleansing Tips: When cleansing, move your hands in circular motion upwards as gently as possible. Cleanse section by section. Use a face cloth and a sponge that dries hard to prevent bacteria build up.

Post Cleansing Once your skin is dry, you should follow immediately with your prescribed skincare.

Throw almonds into the food processor with cinnamon, protein powder, a little orange zest and naked chocolate, then process until the mix looks crumbly.

Add dates, vanilla extract then process again until the mix starts to come together.

Add the juice of ½ orange if needed, so that mixture is soft and forms a soft ball.

Form into 14 decent sized balls.

Roll in coconut or any other of the suggested coatings and store in the fridge until you feel like a snack or quick meal on the run.

Store in the fridge for up to four weeks - if they last that long.

My dentist has informed me I need to have a front tooth extracted. I hate the thought of wearing a denture; what are my other options? The best way to replace a missing tooth is by dental implants. Implants have a 99% success rate and implant placement preserves bone and gum in the area, so it will look like a natural tooth.

Q. What is a provisional crown? Traditionally a crown could not be placed on an implant until the bone around the implant was fully integrated; this usually takes about 6 months. But now with careful planning and skill, a provisional crown can be placed.

A provisional crown will look like a natural tooth, but will initially be made so that it does not contact the opposing teeth.

This is to ensure ideal integration of the implant in the bone. If

you imagine a star picket in a bucket of setting cement, if you are moving the picket around, the cement will not set, and the picket will continue to move.

Q. What is involved with the planning? A 3D X-ray is taken to assess the amount of bone. Then the implant is planned using the software to the desired position. This data is collaborated with a CEREC scan of the patient’s mouth, so a crown can be designed and milled in-house. Once this planning has been completed, a surgical guide is constructed which will allow for key hole placement of the implant to within 500 um.

Q. What can I expect from the procedure? The procedure takes about 1 - 2 hours. With the use of the surgical guide, it is a mimimally invasive procedure with a short healing time.

During the procedure the tooth will be extracted, the titanium implant placed through the surgical guide and if initial stability is achieved, the provisional crown placed.

PATHFINDERS The annual Tilbuster Pumpkin Run will be held again in 2016 and with the assistance of many community organisations and benefactors, Pathfinders are ready to make it bigger than previous years.

Planning is well under way, with over 1,000 pumpkin seeds in the ground, and with the generous support of the Northern Tablelands Local Land Services, Tankworks and the Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation, an irrigation system and tank has been acquired, built and installed.

The aim of the Pumpkin Run has always been to give back to the community, growing and supplying fresh vegetables, especially pumpkins, to refuges, nursing homes and to feed those less fortunate.

The Pumpkin Run departs Armidale on Tuesday 12th April and will finish in the middle of Sydney’s CBD at Government House on Friday 15th April, where His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley generously invited Pathfinders.

Stops will be made in Newcastle and Sydney.

STEVE MCMILLAN 2AD ARMIDALE IS CELEBRATING 80 YEARS IN BUSINESS. WE CAUGHT UP WITH STEVE MCMILLAN TO FIND OUT HOW FAR THE BUSINESS HAS COME.

W

hen and why did 2AD first begin?

A licence for 2AD was first commissioned on the 31st May 1935, but it was not until February 5th 1936, that 2AD was able to start the broadcast.

The then Manager, John Creighton, was the first person to speak. Also on the first few minutes was the then Armidale Mayor O’Connor and member for Parliament D H Drummond.

The first broadcast was in a house that was located adjacent to the North Armidale Apex Lookout and was the home for 2AD until the current Broadcast House in Rusden was fitted out in 1957.

How has broadcasting and the technology changed over the years?

Over the years the technology has changed, from transmitters to the actual in studio consoles; they have all evolved over 80 years.

Back in 1936, records were the way music got played, and what was called carts; they contained all sorts of content for broadcast.

Then as it evolved, and with the computers, it went from vinyl records, to CDs, to downloads, to nowadays, 98 % is all on computers - the songs, the ads, the news service comes via satellite links. It is a lot easier nowadays to operate.

The 2AD console in the studio is very old, put in way back in the early 1970s, but still does the job.

Tell us about some of the personalities who have worked at 2AD over the years?

QUARTET ONE OF AUSTRALIA’S MOST ADMIRED STRING QUARTETS, THE FLINDERS, RETURNS ON SUNDAY 20 MARCH WITH A CONCERT FULL OF GOOD HUMOUR AND GREAT BEAUTY.

M

usica Viva Armidale’s 2016 concert series kicks off on Sunday 20th March, with the acclaimed Flinders Quartet performing Beethoven, Mozart and Haydn’s joyous string quartet, The Joke.

Audiences may remember that the Flinders Quartet last performed in Armidale in 2012.

Cellist Zoe Knighton, founding member of the quartet, can’t wait to return as Armidale, as it holds special memories for her.

“When we were here last time, we were struck by the cultural vibrancy of Armidale - and how receptive your students are. There is a wealth of culture and joy in the music community here that is to be envied. My son remembers Armidale from last time and wanted to come with me! We are thrilled to be coming back.”

NECOM Director Susanne Jamesrecently spoke with Zoe about their upcoming concert: SJ: How did FQ come about?

ZK: During my Masters degree in 2000, I wanted to learn more about chamber music so

called up a few friends, and we got together to play. We had such a good time, and we worked so well together, that we naturally fell into a career as a string quartet.

SJ: What inspired the name “Flinders”?

ZK: We were sitting in a café across from Flinders Street Station, discussing possible names for the group, when one of us pointed it out. We all loved it, and FQ was formed.

SJ: You have a new line-up since the Quartet last performed here in 2012 - tell me about it.

ZK: After performing together for ten years, two of our players moved on to start families. Helen (Ireland) and I wanted to see where we could take FQ if we continued with new members, and they have brought new perspectives and dynamics into the Quartet.

Shane (Chen) was an accountant, but decided his heart lay with his music. He is graduate of the Australian National Academy of Music and an exceptionally gifted and virtuosic violinist. Nick (Waters), our newest member is a young gun in Australian violin playing and has really opened

our eyes to new ideas. It is so invigorating playing with younger players - there is an element of freshness that they bring to a familiar and loved repertoire.

SJ: What can audiences expect when they come to see your concert?

ZK: We have chosen works at the heart of the repertoire - very accessible and engaging. We are looking at this music in a fresh way to gain new insight into these compositions and to find new layers within the music. We are seeking the essence within the music - the conversation that goes beyond our instruments.

SJ: You describe yourself as a “chamber music junkie” - what do you mean by that?

ZK: Chamber music is incredibly addictive and string quartets are my first love - it is a magical combination of four instruments. And chamber music concerts give you that rare opportunity to hear a full piece of music without interruption.

I love going to concerts - I can enjoy the music with my full attention. Our concert will give our audience that same rare chance.

WHEN THE SCIENCE FACILITIES WERE FIRST BUILT AT PLC ARMIDALE, THERE WERE FEW STUDENTS STUDYING SCIENCE, NOR IN 1887 WHEN THE COLLEGE WAS FIRST OPENED (ON ANOTHER SITE). TODAY, IT’S A DIFFERENT STORY.

LC Armidale is ahead of the national trend and the demand to study sciences has increased considerably, with over 40% of graduates progressing to tertiary studies in science related fields.

In order to continue to foster this passion for the sciences, the College has upgraded its facilities. Following an injection of funds from both the federal government as well as a combined fundraising effort called IGNiTE, from the College’s Foundation, P&F, Old Girls’ Union and other members of the community, PLC Armidale opened its four refurbished science labs to classes last month.

We chat with Science Coordinator, Mr Jonathon Shumack, about the new development.

Tell us about the exciting new building development in the science area and how this will benefit the students and staff.

Over the past two years, members of the PLC Armidale Staff, our architects and builders have been consulting to create flexible learning spaces that cater for the “here and now” and can adapt over the coming years to the exciting innovations that science and technology will no doubt experience. Q&A: Director of Boarding & Girls’ Education Director With the move to co-education at The Armidale School and the accompanying growth in enrolments, TAS has created two new positions.

We speak to Girls’ Education Director Alexandra Pollitt and the Director of Boarding Michael Holland about their roles.

lex, you’ve got an exciting position at the school as Girls’ Education Director and Head of the girls’ boarding house ...

It certainly is exciting being one of the new girls, starting something together! I see my role as multi-faceted - we’re on a journey to creating a co-educational environment that promotes positive interactions between all students.

It’s about making every girl feel she belongs - whether that be in cadets, her sporting House or in student clubs - that she feels loved, valued, and seen, and is excited about being part of something we are all starting together.

This doesn’t mean neglecting the boys, of course, who need to know they are valued as much as they have ever been!

You have also had extensive experience with Round Square schools, I believe.

TAS will be the third Round Square school I’ve worked at. In fact, I was a student at St

Philip’s College Alice Springs when it became a member, so the philosophy of Round Square founder Kurt Hahn with its strong emphasis on internationalism, student democracy, environmental stewardship, adventure, leadership and service has really informed the type of educator I wanted to be. Working at St Philip’s while I studied to be a teacher then gave me the opportunity to work at St Cyprian’s in Cape Town South Africa for three years, which was an incredible experience.

It’s also a philosophy that took you out of the education sector for a period.

Yes - after Camberwell Girls’ Grammar, I worked with High Resolves, an organisation with a focus on equipping young people with the skills and capacity to become agents of change. I ran programmes in various states, before returning to teaching at Flinders Christian College and now, TAS. It’s an exciting time to be at TAS, and I’m thrilled to be part of it.

Michael, what does your role involve?

The Director of Boarding encompasses strategic development of all aspects of boarding, as well as providing practical support for all of the Heads of House. One of my priorities will be getting to know the boarders and their families and forging positive, productive relationships. At TAS it is important that all our are boarders feel a sense of community and connected-ness - that their life in the boarding house is homely, happy and meaningful, no matter what House they are in.

Tell us about your extensive experience in boarding.

My own boarding journey began at St Joseph’s Nudgee Junior College as a Year 7 boarder. It was a long way from my home in Coppabella, Central Queensland, and the school population was twice that of the town! I commenced work as a boarding supervisor at Nudgee while at university, and then went to Whitsunday Anglican School in Mackay, a co-ed school similar in size to TAS,

where I was Head of Trinity House. Following that I spent eight years in Perth, as Director of Gibney House at Aquinas College and Director of Boarding at Guildford Grammar. I have come to TAS from the same role at Brisbane Boys’ College.

You’ve had time in both single sex and co-ed schools, then?

Yes. I very much enjoyed the co-ed aspect at Whitsunday Anglican School. It was lovely to see boys and girls interacting after school; it’s just a more natural environment - the real world is co-ed, after all.

What are your other passions?

I love rugby and am looking forward to coaching here at TAS. And my family, of course!

We’re living on campus; my wife, Julianne Holland, is a registered nurse, and our daughter, Lucy, has just started in Year 2 at TAS. She’s very excited to be at the same school as Dad! Good luck, and thank you both.

ow long have you lived in the area? Tell us about your family ...

My wife, Tracy, and I have lived in the New England for over 25 years, after relocating from Sydney. Previous to that we were in Southern NSW and Melbourne, taking on career opportunities. We then decided a more stable environment would be beneficial with a young family, so we relocated back to Tracy’s home town of Uralla, raising three wonderful sons along the way - and we have not looked back. It was one of the best decisions we have made.

What do you love most about the New England area?

Certainly the more relaxed lifestyle, the four seasons are great, and we’re only a couple of hours to the coast - so we enjoy the best of both worlds.

There is so much to do locally; family and friends from other parts of NSW and interstate are always amazed when visiting the area.

When you’re not at work, where would we find you?

My wife, Tracy, and I love weekends away at the coast, also visiting two of our sons, Myles and his wife, Anne, in Newcastle and Ben, in Sydney. We are also fortunate to have our youngest son, Eric, partner Emma and our two beautiful grandchildren, Poppy and Ryder living only two blocks away, so time with them is very special. We have made some wonderful lifelong friends here, whom we have also adopted as our extended family.

I love a few rounds of golf; however, I have found that I am my own handicap in that area.

Plans for the future?

Build the Regional Finance Solutions business locally, with the opportunity to assist more clients in the Armidale area with finance options, whilst also continuing to enjoy the New England lifestyle. And, I’ve been saying this for many years ... To also improve my golf!

•I HATE PINK•

The UNHUMBLE GARDNER There, I’ve said it. Three little words. Done and in print.

And while I’m at it, a few more ... Pull the pink, reef it out, and throw it on the compost. Good riddance, I say.

I

immediately realise this declaration may not make me many new friends.

If a hostile lynching mob surrounds my house, I have hurriedly hidden all ropes and materials necessary for the construction of a scaffold. But it’s the old tar and feathering I am most anxious about.

Why my seeming hatred of pink? Firstly, I believe it’s due to our long, hot Aussie summers, where the harsh heat seems to bleach and wash away the true pigment colour properties of the majority of pinks. Secondly, pink is planted far too often. Invariably, it’s the same shade of pink, blanketing all garden beds, leading to its total reign and dominance - a deadening sea of colour.

I’m still uncertain what makes folks go crazy, mad and bonkers with their obsessive collection of the colour. En route to the nursery, all rudimentary colour design principles are just chucked right out the car window. An irrational demon takes possession; it’s pink they seek and pink they shall have, and quickly, once again, the shopping trolley is chockers full of it.

Imagine a house with painted pink exterior and interior walls. Inside, throw in wall to wall pink carpets, pink lounges dressed up with a few puffed up pink cushions, pink tables, chairs and cupboards, add some lovely pink curtains, and to finish it all off, some gorgeous pink ornaments, just so as to bring it all happily together. Oh and I forgot, a pink mail box in the front garden to perfectly complement the garden’s pink perimeter fences. Beginning to get the picture? Yet when it comes to gardens, it’s all about the flower of pink.

Why this colour’s attraction? Pink represents the qualities of compassion, nurturing, tenderness and sweetness, intimacy, romance and the feminine. Girls from the get go are socialised to identify with the attributes of pink, and the

majority of nursery customers are female, so here may possibly lie some of the answer. Just lost more friends.

In psychology, pink is seen as a sign of hope, inspiring warmth and soothing feelings. Studies have confirmed that exposure to pink can have calming effects on the nerves. Violent and aggressive prisoners have been successfully calmed by placing them in a pink room for a specified length of time. However, exposure for too long can have the opposite effect. Yep, hit the nail on the head.

To solve the pink predicament? Just don’t buy more pink. If the uncontrollable urge still haunts you, go for the extremes from the pink colour spectrum, the softest pearls through to the hottest fuchsias.

Have some real fun by choosing other flower colours. A rich, robust red, a buttercup yellow or palest lemon, a buzzy orange or a subtle salmon, and blues and purples of any hue.

Most important of all is white and cream. The use of these colours, their compatibility and contrast with existing pinks, will instantly transform and enliven them.

It’s been quite some time since I bought a pink flowering plant. However, a survey of my back garden potager illustrates that the pink pendulum has swung back to the other extreme. Little to no pink. I need a quick fix.

Still reluctant to go against my own Nazi colour pink advice, the solution I thought was simple.

My trusty dog, Sly, is now sporting a new, highly fashionable collar, of the hottest lipstick pink.

I just have to convince Sly to obediently lounge in the garden wherever the colour is missing.

Sly’s response? With his pink collar, he is revelling in his role as the neighbourhood’s new total love magnet, attracting boys and girls from near and far. I’m off to buy a pink shirt.

BEING A TRAVEL AGENT MY HUSBAND AND I HAVE A BIT OF A COMPETITION RUNNING BETWEEN US AS TO WHO HAS VISITED THE MOST COUNTRIES.

A

t the moment, I’m leading just. But what he hasn’t worked out (well, not until he reads this column) is that I make sure whenever we plan a holiday together I choose somewhere he’s been before but I haven’t been to, so my numbers increase and his stay static! That’s why I’m the Travel Agent!

And there are many countries I haven’t been to yet that I would dearly love to visit, and on the other hand there are probably some countries that really don’t hold much interest for me but which are hugely popular with a lot of travellers. That’s the trick about being a Travel Agent - you have to put your own preferences and likes and dislikes away when you are planning someone else’s holiday.

Mind you, most of the time I am exceedingly jealous when I’m organising holidays for other people and often I wish it was me heading off instead of my client! And I can’t understand why no-one’s offered to pack me in their bag and take me along for the journey - I promise I would be very quiet; you’d hardly know I was there with you!

Anyway, there are a few places that clients are heading off to this year that I really do wish I was packing my bags and heading off to as well. One of them is Cuba (which I mentioned in last month’s column) - I just think it would be fascinating to visit this country, which is kind of stuck in a time warp of the 1960s. And to visit now is a good idea before, dare I say it, it gets overrun by American tourists! But if I do get there this year, I’ll have to go alone, because hubby hasn’t been there either - so it would be one more to my list and none to his!

I have a number of clients cruising different parts of the world this year and even though in the past cruising hasn’t been high on my list of holidays, I wouldn’t mind doing a cruise sometime soon - I’ve cruised the Inside Passage (both on a cruise ship and also many years ago by car ferry) and I’ve also visited Antarctica, but that’s a bit different to your usual “cruise”. And cruising really is becoming one of the most popular

holiday options for Australians.

My choice would be to cruise either up around the Baltic Sea and Arctic Circle around Norway, Finland and Iceland, or along the Dalmatian/Croatian coast, or if time permitted around Central and South America including the Panama Canal - but I think that one might have to be put on the back burner for a while.

And then of course there’s Africa - but which country or countries do you choose? A lot of people assume that one African safari is the same as the next one, and what you get to see in South Africa will be the same in Botswana or Namibia or Tanzania - but each of these countries have unique experiences of their own, and choosing between them really comes down to what you want to see or do. If I could squeeze a visit to Africa in this year, then I think I would choose Namibia with a side trip to Zanzibar for a bit of R&R! Looking closer to home, there are also many places in Asia I wouldn’t mind visiting sometime soon - Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Laos are three countries in Asia which offer travellers unique and unforgettable experiences. And the great thing about visiting Asia is that compared to other parts of the world, getting there from Australia is relatively cheap and once there, most Asian countries are really good value for money.

Really close to home, the Ghan and Indian Pacific are both proving very popular among travellers this year. Both these rail journeys stand tall among the other great train journeys of the world and give you the opportunity to see our vast land from the comfort of a truly first class train.

Anyway, all I’ve got to do is make sure when hubby suggests somewhere for a holiday, it’s not already on my list of countries visited, although, I must admit, if he suggested Morocco (which I visited a couple of years ago on my own), I’d have to bite the bullet and let him add one to his list while my list stayed the same!

AS A CHILD, I ALWAYS THOUGHT HENNY PENNY WAS SUCH A FEATHER-BRAINED (!) CHOOK. SHE CREATED AN ENORMOUS FUSS WHEN AN ACORN FELL ON HER HEAD, RUNNING AROUND THE FARMYARD SHRIEKING THAT THE SKY WAS FALLING.

eople often run around panicking when, if there are truly serious threats, we should think very clearly, consulting together to hammer out solutions.

Henny Penny commentators can create all sorts of fears, when more sober experts like the Reserve Bank see things as holding steady.

Locally we need the creation of new businesses and employment opportunities. We are all instrumental in the successes and failures of our home.

Greg, my local friendly pharmacist, chatted as he took my blood pressure. He said neuroscience showed that when people have face-to-face conversations and contact with others, their blood pressure is good - even if the conversations are very intense and animated, good chemicals are released.

Social interaction is vital for health: being solo and lonely is bad for your health. Here it’s easy to chat to people and build networks - another big tick for us. All sorts of things can open out, and if you make an effort, there really is something to interest everyone.

Thank goodness our amateur sport doesn’t have the taint of sports corruption we hear about elsewhere. Countless people, for love of their games, volunteer to enable teams and events to function in a multitude of sports.

An example, Evan Quaife has given 40+ years to football in various roles and tells me we have about 1,200 kids playing in junior football teams here. Dedication is repeated across all the sports, and we owe a collective debt to all those passionate people. The Sports Council’s Steve McMillan says last year a whopping $16,204,581 came into our economy through sporting events.

Estimates for January were $2,652,015. Volunteers across communities are a hallmark in the bush.

The Hospital volunteers are solid gold. Music is another stream threading its way through the community. Our marvellous long-established Symphony Orchestra, Youth Orchestra and all the other local and visiting groups give us a feast of opportunities. The Conservatorium’s success promoting self-expression, intelligence and creativity

in the region has been publicly recognised. And so it should be.

And its dedicated teams have gone out to tiny hamlets, giving school children live music for the first time. The central hub is NECOM, steered by Director Suzanne James, who sees boundaries there to be pushed. The indefatigable Peta Bligh is bringing Opera in the Paddock to Lazenby this year on April 1, and to the paddock at Mimosa, Delungra, the next day. Teddy Tahu Rhodes is back (after his unforgettable trip last year!) as well as a great cast from major companies. These are special experiences.

We are regularly spoilt by the Belgrave Cinema’s first releases and with special showings from the UK’s National Theatre and New York Metropolitan productions, plus their Film Club. Locally, ADMS has supplemented their terrific live shows with some excellent play-readings. The schools are no slouches either.

Meanwhile, NERAM’s new director Robert Heather is settling in and gathering people behind him as he takes the gallery into the future. I recommend a regular outing to check the happenings, to have a coffee and one of those blood pressure lowering conversations.

The Business Chamber and Business Enterprise Centre are scheduling some serious activities for business in the district and its future directions.

Ultimately it’s always for the stakeholders to brush aside any falling acorns and make their future happen.

In quite close succession, the city has hosted two Vice-Regal visits: firstly NSW Governor David Hurley and his wife, and then Governor-General Peter Cosgrove and his wife. I cannot imagine they would be anything but impressed with the realities on offer here. And three cheers for Kath Wray OAM. What would I say to Henny Penny? Keep calm, and stop carrying on. We can work our way through any inevitable problems if we work together. Finally, Barnaby Joyce, our Federal MP, is now Deputy Prime Minister. I wonder how that will affect us?
