Issue 103 - December THE MEATING PLACE Can you believe it’s nearly Christmas again ... Is it just me, or does the festive season come around quicker every year? As always, this is a busy time of the year for us here at The Meating Place, as we are busy preparing all our oven baked hams, rolled pork and turduckens.

Our oven baked wood smoked hams have become quite the local delicacy over the last few years, as people realise that in comparison to the chemically smoked and boiled hams offered at below cost prices by the supermarkets, there really is no comparison - and when wanting something special for Christmas, then an oven baked ham from The Meating Place is the only option!

This year we are again preparing in store our turduckens, a boneless turkey stuffed with a boneless duck stuffed with a boneless chicken, all rolled around three different seasonings. These are the epitome of a festive season delicacy! Also this year we will have all the usual rolled pork

cuts with your choice of any of our extensive range of seasonings.

We will also have a selection of the award winning puddings and Christmas cakes from Pudding Lane. These puddings are the standard when it comes to indulgent desserts for your Christmas Day. Where do you source your produce?

Most of our produce is sourced locally.

We try to support out local wholesalers as much as we can. All of our fresh seafood comes from Dean Doolans Seafood at the Gold Coast.

What do you love most about your business?

First of all, the people I work with, and all of my customers. A lot of our customers have been coming for many years; as well as them, we enjoy our little conversations. Having been here for 10 years, you get to know your customers on a personal level. Having your own business can be very challenging at times, but also very rewarding.

What are your plans for the future?

Who knows what the future holds; we will just keep cooking fish and chips for now!

ow long have you lived in the area?

I have lived on a small farm of 12 acres just out of Uralla for 26 years. I love the seasons on the tablelands, and Uralla itself is an interesting and go ahead community with a diversity of people. I am sure it is a very pleasant place for travellers to take a break in, with its antiquarian bookshop, galleries, second hand shops and numerous cafés.

Describe the type of artwork you specialise in ...

I am a sculptor, although I would prefer to be called a found object artist.

I am a hoarder of all sorts of “junk” whatever captures my eye, really. I walk most days and often collect things from beside the road. The local tip used to be a good source of material, but scavenging is no longer allowed.

But I often pick up things from the tip shop.

Friends often ring me when they are having a cleanout. I have, for example, enjoyed making many pieces from the numerous interesting elements inside old pianos that I have been given.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

My inspiration comes from the material I collect. The material itself generally determines what I make. For that reason, most of my pieces are different.

I guess I have picked up ideas along the way from other artists’ work. Rosalie Gascoigne and Andy Goldsworthy are two artists that come to mind.

I think my upbringing in the bush has also been important. There was always rusty tin, wire and decaying wood lying around. Growing up in

a rather isolated area, I played a lot by myself.

I still see my art as play.

Just a big kid, really.

Other than your artworks, what are your other interests?

I am also a writer and photographer. I have had stories and photographs published in newspapers and magazines. I recently won the New England Award in the Thunderbolt Crime Writing Competition run by the New England Writers Centre. I contribute to ABC Open, and I am a regular contributor to Facebook. As an artist I find Facebook very important. I have artist friends from around the world who provide inspiration and give encouragement. I also find it a very good medium for “testing the waters” with my own artwork.

Travelling in rural Australia also gives me

plenty of inspiration. I recently spent a couple of weeks out west, including a few days in Lightning Ridge - a found object artist’s heaven.

When is your exhibition at Gallery 126, and what can people expect to see?

My exhibition at Gallery 126 opens on the 27th November at 5pm and runs through to 24th December. I will have an eclectic mix of artwork made from found objects - wall pieces, free standing sculptures and numerous small quirky pieces that I hope will be popular for the Christmas stocking.

For this exhibition I am also having a Friends Wall for other artists who have given me support along the way. In addition, two friends of mine will be providing a short segment of live music, playing as a duo. Elspeth Murphy is a singer and ukulele player and Barry McDonald, a noted researcher of Australian folk music, is a fiddler.

This will be at 5:45pm.

Formerly known as Armidale Community Church, the church has been operating in Armidale for over 30 years.

Tell us about the church and its mission ...

We recently changed the name of the church, simply to represent a heart for the city of Armidale and surrounding region. We believe that the church (not just our church, but all churches) mission is to impact the world with the love of Christ and to love and accept all people.

The mission that we hope to accomplish as a church is to love and serve our community and to love God, love people and love life.

Our desire is to provide a place where the church is no longer a separate entity to the city, but where people feel acceptance and love, and a place to belong and grow.

The heart of our church is to be a church for anyone and everyone. We have different age groups and people from different ethnic backgrounds in our church. We have professors from UNE, farmers, stay-home mums, families, singles … the list goes on and on.

How does Beyond Empathy work with the community?

BE uses art to influence change. The community arts and cultural development organisation creates arts projects that aim to give some of the more disadvantaged people in our community opportunities to participate in and create art – and develop skills that we all need like confidence, reliance, self-worth and self-knowledge. BE aims to generate new connections and opportunities that over-ride disadvantage.

Projects like No Shame Day bring artists, young people and the community together in a positive and creative environment – and we all get to see just what amazing talent is right here!

Nick, many of us know you as a well-known Australian hip hop artist and part of the group Spit Syndicate, in your role at Beyond Empathy what have you been doing in community?

Working in Armidale for the past 12 months has been an incredible experience for me; I’ve been working with and mentoring two local hip hop artists, Nate Weatherall (Koorified) and Liana Simmons (Sneaky El), as we’ve been running hip hop workshops with the very

talented young people of Armidale.

Nate, Liana and I collaborate in the development of new creative work - with a focus on their professional development.

Together, we have been working with young people in schools and community, working with them to use hip hop, poetry and performance to express themselves and tell their stories.

This project is a part of Beyond Empathy’s Maven project, which brings professional and emerging artists together with young people creating a space for the sharing of knowledge and skills, up and down. The Maven project is establishing a creative hub which offers arts education and employment opportunities.

In the week leading up to No Shame Day, there will be intensive school and community workshops led by professional and emerging artists including singer/songwriters David Leha (Radical Son), Ant Green and Matt Griffin (Terra Firma), Dancers Brad Harrison (Bboy Yogi), Carmel Vale and Steve Quinlan, fire and poi artist Brodie Loren and drummer Kai Tipping.

The other members of Spit Syndicate, Jimmy Nice and Joyride (Rowan Dix) will be working with Nate, Liana and myself to run a series of hip hop workshops.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the time I’ve spent in Armidale and this week will be no different, ending with an incredible performance in the Mall!

This year has been unreal for live music in Armidale, and I feel privileged to be able to report on all the upcoming events on our Armidale Live website and Facebook page. Last month we were well into spring, and it was clear that everyone had shaken off their winter blues, with most venues getting involved with the live music scene.

t was great to see the Wicklow kick start their Sunday Sessions in the Beer Garden and of course, the Armidale Club ramp things up with themed nights and importing key acts to keep us guessing. Favourite nights were the Burlesque night and Halloween, where the A-Team turned up the scarometer for their Halloween party, with vampires, ghosts and ghouls keeping the brews flowing. Josh St Ledger won best dressed for the evening, with extra points for staying in creepy character and drinking through a straw all night!

The Regional Business Chamber awards were held at the Armidale Town Hall in late September, with some of Armidale’s best

businesses taking home the trophies in categories such as innovation, sustainability and business ethics. Winners included Armidale Tourist Park, Whitehack, Hunting Haven, Invest Blue and Challenge Community Services, who will represent the New England North West region at the NSW Business Chamber State Awards in Sydney. A big congratulations to these businesses, who are trying new things and keeping on top of their digital game.

The Black Gully Festival was once again a hit in Armidale on October 25, showcasing the region’s sustainability groups and community initiatives in the beautiful surrounds of Black Gully and NERAM. Festival-goers were treated to workshops on scarecrow making,

composting, tree planting and vegie garden growing, with Josh St Ledger, the BopCatz, Georgia Smith, the Syncopaths and SoulSa, and lots more, finishing off with the night to electro beats.

The annual Jug competition was held at the Armidale Golf Club over two weekends in November. The ladies’ event was taken out by Mandy Richardson and Amanda Carr, pictured here with trophy donors Jim and Margie Hanlan. The ladies celebrated with a themed dinner on Saturday night.

The men’s Jug attracted golfers from all over, including Jim and Melville, who have been playing at the Jug for over 50 years!

Armidale definitely celebrated Halloween in

style, with The Giggle ball fundraiser, held at the Armidale City Bowling Club, raising funds for Cancer - with everyone dressed to the nines with a Halloween twist!

Excited to attend the upcoming day on the green in November, with musical greats John Farnham and Daryl Braithwaite killing it on stage, but even more so, the after parties planned in town.

as the description of a group of children who’d been given a very simple surprise present of numbered team T-shirts. Nothing whizz-bang, but simple joy. Sometimes, with the best intentions, we’ve made life too complicated for our children.

And maybe ourselves.

One of my early memories was of tremendous excitement in the Armidale Town Hall where I was taken to see Gilbert and Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore.

I don’t want to even try to remember the year!

It was probably performed by what we now call the ADMS, Armidale’s Drama & Musical Society.

The ADMS have a most professional approach

to providing something for everyone over their seasons. I loved the diversion of the recent ThirtyNine Steps. We take so many things for granted here, across the whole spectrum of activities available. And there are those who gain their joy from volunteering towards the end result, whether a cricket competition, an air show, a play, a choir performance or a special fundraiser. An appetite for life is a wonderful thing.

Our Central Mall should always stand as the social and recreational heart of Armidale - a Recreational Precinct that is now being shaken up by an energised group of its can-do retailers. The Business Chamber has facilitated the formation of this group, and it was exciting to hear their very doable plans. Watch this space - reaching full potential and meeting the market are the name of the game.

Last year’s Turning on the Christmas Lights was a wonderful community event. This year there are a string of events (check Council’s website) with a combined Switching on the Lights and Christmas in the Mall on Thursday, December 3 from 5 - 10pm.

Stephanie Kentish is the Council’s Events Coordinator.

One of the big issues in the Mall is meeting the need for all-weather comfort as one of the keys to making the area fizz. This has been achieved in other places, so the template is there.

We have some wonderful poets in our district, and Yve Louis is certainly one of our very best.

She is widely published and appreciated, and I got great pleasure from a work of hers that presented as working notes for a film script, referring back nostalgically to a beautiful woman followed by three romantic French singers from the past. Yve read the

poem at a Readers’ Companion poetry evening.

Published in the Australian Poetry Journal, I hope she won’t mind me quoting some fragments about “a sunny spring day in the Third City of the Arts, NSW, Australia, fronting the new shoetique” ...”and now the smell of coffee, wafting, narcotic from the Paris end of town … and right on cue a busker on accordion …” (YL). I don’t know about you, but I just melt into the possibilities of this magic image - and why not? Thank you, Yve; I hope you don’t mind me sharing my small borrowing …

We have so many ingredients for optimism and the good life in our district. Armidale Mayor, Herman Beyersdorf, has spoken of cutting red tape and his desire for co-operation and negotiation. If this does happen, pooling of efforts and mindset should make us all better off.

I personally always prefer a Do Tank to a Think Tank. It’s a joke to contemplate that a public sculpture of The Big Argument can ever have been suggested for Armidale and its strong-willed citizens!

Robin Jones’ and Steve Widders’ initiative of the YOU + ME = US forum of Armidale people sharing the commonalities of their different faiths I found heartwarming.

Let’s agree to bottle some community happiness in this Christmas season, folding in different people in our common shared humanity, based on the joys of simply being human and together in a great place. Hope, simplicity and yes, tolerance, are surely basic messages in the Christmas story.

Take care of each other - and do enjoy some cake.

With dedicated and careful attention to basic scientific research principles, most issues and techniques were sorted out in the first year of having our licence.

Susie and David met at UNE, and Susie worked as David’s research assistant. Susie started the winery in Bellingen in 2000 and her extraordinary over developed olfactory senses are invaluable in the whole process.

We continue to undertake research in the development of new and exciting products. For example, we are currently working on a range of rhubarb based products using rhubarb from Fernbrook, just outside of Dorrigo.

Do you use local ingredients?

All the base material is made using local ingredients, whether it is potatoes, limes, oranges, ginger, or rhubarb, to name a few.

Some of the spices we use are imported, because they are not produced in Australia.

For example, Juniper berries, used in the production of our Gins and liqueurs, are not readily available in Australia in quantities that we require. We only use an "outside" ingredient when we can’t source a local, regional or Australian ingredient.

The Old School Café 12 months on ...

Opening the café was the culmination of a two year renovation project on the 100 year old Wongwibinda Public School. These projects are never really finished though, as Karyn and I spent most of our free time building new gardens, finishing all those little half completed pieces and thinking up new follies.

The first season of trading has been a huge surprise. Firstly, that over 3,000 people visited our café, which we had thought of calling “The Café at The End of the Universe”. We want to thank everyone who made the effort, as we are lucky enough to have the best and friendliest customers in the universe! Another, repeated, surprise is just how beautiful this part of the country actually is. This spring is stunning! In town it is so easy to forget how glorious the New England is, and I’m sure anyone who takes a drive just to visit or re-visit this area will be glad they did - be sure to drop in and say hello

Christmas CHRISTMAS IS ROLLING AND ROLLICKING TOWARDS US AGAIN. IT’S A TIME OF GENEROSITY, GOODWILL AND GIVING, AS WELL AS FESTIVE FUN, REVELRY AND MY OWN FAVE - A BIT OF NAUGHTY INDULGENCE.

F

rom the outset, I must confess I’m quite partial to a fella dressed in a uniform, especially fire truck red in colour, who’s jovial in nature and travels a lot. With the yuletide celebrations approaching, it’s about preparing your garden and home for entertaining and the purchasing of Xmas gifts. The following suggestions may assist. All are available at Cedar Nursery.

An instant display of traditional festive red, and my personal favourite are “Big Red” geraniums. Each year I plant en masse these tough little beauties - the more the merrier.

Roses ... well, you can really never have enough. They are simply magic for summer colour and to dress up indoors with exquisitely scented cut blooms. Cedar have a huge selection of quality roses, the best in town, hundreds in number, including Old World, David Austin’s, floribundas, hybrid teas, standards and climbers.

Other plants which are guaranteed great summer flowering performers and which I call “just don’t shut up,” are Californian poppies, gauras, penstemons, salvias, lavenders, hydrangeas, agapanthus, shasta, marguerite, and African daisies, and groundcovers convolvulus, verbenas, pig face and cat mints.

New and exclusive to Cedar is the “Rare Antique Perennial Collection”. If you think a gardener may have everything, well he/she will be shaking and salivating over this range. These perennials are stars of English garden magazines, rarely available in Australia, plants to covet and dream about. The range includes anthricus, aruncas, asters, epimediums, monardas, phytuemas, podophyllums, pulsatillas, rudbeckias, sanguisorbias and thalictrums. Most of these gems have already found happy homes in my own garden and rapidly expanding potager.

Thinking of plants of produce, ideal candidates are citrus, olives, figs, blue berries, raspberries, grapes and currants. A quick visit to the grocer to buy a sample bag of the plant’s future fruit harvest is great to accompany the plant.

Art in the garden is an essential and integral element of good garden design. It provides great visual interest, scale, structure, and “you can’t kill it with neglect” beauty. Garden art can include sculptures, water features and fountains, pots and urns, and metal wall, fence and screen art, all available in either traditional or contemporary designs. Also in stock are all weather outdoor furniture settings, perfect for outdoor entertaining.

Lastly, available at Cedar, is Liz Chappell’s latest garden book, Celebrate the Seasons - Garden Memoirs of New England. The book has received brilliant reviews from the Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian and The Land. The book chronicles over 20 years of gardening in her large country garden near Glen Innes, relating her tales and experiences with severe frosts and droughts, her failures and successes, and the subsequent lessons learnt and the accumulated wisdom very well earnt. In her own words, “It’s like having a chat over the kitchen table with a dear friend”. The accompanying photos are sensational. I have had a copy on my coffee table for near a month and have read it cover to cover countless times. It’s the definitive book for gardening in the New England region. A perfect gift for yourself and for others. Please note, I am not presently or have ever been in a personal or bonded relationship with the author, and no money has changed hands. More’s the pity.

This past year, with my sometimes addled and subjective memory, I believe I have been a relatively good and well behaved boy. Thus, with great anticipation I await the annual visit of Santa. I can only hope my trusty dog, Sly, the sometime guard dog, doesn’t mistake Santa for an unwelcome night intruder or a dastardly robber and chase him right back up the chimney.

H

ow long has Meals on Wheels been operating in Armidale?

Meals on Wheels has been operating in Armidale and servicing Armidale and Uralla since 1966. Next year is our big 50 year anniversary.

Why is this service so important to our communities?

From its inception over sixty years ago, Meals on Wheels has grown to become a driving force of care in the community. In the course of a year, over 14.8 million meals are delivered by more than 78,700 volunteers to about 53,000 recipients Australia wide in cities, regional and rural areas. Of these, about 4.5 million meals are delivered by 35,000 volunteers in NSW each year. Whilst age and disability may reduce some people’s capacity to get out and about, Meals on Wheels help make it possible for them to stay in their homes, where most are happiest, and maintain their independence. Delivery of nutritious meals, social interaction and a friendly check of a client’s wellbeing by Meals on Wheels volunteers can help people live the

lives they choose. We currently deliver over 22,000 meals in our Armidale and Uralla region every year, and this number has grown from 13,000 meals just 18 months ago.

Tell us about the recent changes to the Armidale service?

Last year we moved the organisation to its own production kitchen in partnership at the Armidale Showgrounds.

It’s a wonderful facility, and we have also continued to accommodate showground users for their individual annual events. Our meals are now cooked fresh every day, and we use as much local produce from local businesses as possible. We also produce a range of frozen meals that can be purchased during business hours. We have partnerships with a number of organisations to further support our local community.

PUDDING

INGREDIENTS 500 g butter 1 kg mixed fruit 500 g brown sugar 3 cups of chopped dates 1 cup of bread crumbs 6 eggs 2 tbsp all spice

2 tbsp nutmeg 2 tbsp ginger powder 2 tbsp cinnamon 2 tbsp bicarb soda 2 cups plain flour 1 cup SR flour

METHOD Cream butter and sugar.

Add eggs one at a time.

Add all of the dry ingredients, and then mix together really well.

Put boiler on the stove and have the water boiling.

Wet calico and lay cloth (½ metre). Cover cloth with extra flour and rub in really well.

Place cloth over a large bowl and add the mixture; tie firmly with string.

Place an old dinner plate upside down in the pot to stop the calico from touching the bottom and burning. Lower slowly into the boiling water and cook covered for five hours. Let cool for about an hour; take calico off and pop on a plate. Let cool for a few hours and wrap in plastic; pop in the fridge until Christmas.

Since 2012, No Shame Day has used public performances, including poetry, music, dance and song, to help create pride. Professional artists are working with emerging artists and young people in schools and in community - developing the creative and personal skills of the young people through a series of arts-based workshops.

After years of quietly attempting to overcome the concept, Beyond Empathy decided to “out” shame to the broader community. It is hoped that No Shame Day acts as a catalyst in enabling young people to step up in pride and have an opportunity to show off their many and diverse talents - shame free.

Since it began, No Shame Day has showcased remarkable and inspiring performances by young people - sharing positive youth culture, reflecting on personal experiences, and creating performance works that acknowledge their capacity to influence their future.

Pathfinders National Aboriginal Birth Certificate Programme is an Indigenous Programme which aims to redress this issue by conducting sign-up days in towns and areas where there are significant numbers of Aboriginal people who don’t have birth certificates. Since the programme’s inception, more than 6,000 people have gained access to their birth certificates.

Unregistered births of Indigenous Australians are higher than in the wider community, and applications for Birth Certificates are noticeably lower. A grant from the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet under the Indigenous Advancement Strategy (IAS) to Pathfinders to tackle this issue will enable more sign up days, cover the costs of birth certificates, and allow more people to fully participate in society and address the areas of focus of the IAS. Recently the Pathfinders team conducted sign up days in Taree, Kempsey and Bowraville, with close to 500 people eligible and applying for a birth certificate. From this simple process, these applicants will now be able to enrol at preschool or primary school, transition from school to higher education or enter the workforce. These young people will be contributing members of our communities.

Pathfinders will continue to advocate and lobby for additional funding, to make the process simpler and more affordable for all Australians. ow long have Moxon’s Bakeries been in Armidale, and where did you first start?

Moxon’s Bakery was originally opened by Pat and Arthur Moxon in a small township outside Wellington known as Stewart Town in 1954.

After a successful eight years in Stewart Town, Pat and Arthur moved the bakery and their family to Binnaway in 1962, after the birth of their third child, Ann. Moxon’s Bakery was a booming business in the small town and in 1976 saw a young Roger Bourke join their team as the apprentice baker, ready to learn all the tricks of the trade.

As railway movements started to decline and the number of people and visitors in Binnaway began to reduce, Pat and Arthur decided it was time to move to

another town and bring the bakery aglow in a new surrounding. This then found Moxon’s Bakery relocated to a small hot bread shop on Faulkner Street in Armidale, owned by Ken and Estelle Krammer.

The move to Armidale may never have happened if Pat and Arthur’s eldest child, Neville, wasn’t studying at the University of New England and came across the small local shop for sale. The move to Armidale saw Pat and Arthur lose their apprentice, Roger, who decided it was time to go back to farming. However, he couldn’t stay away.

Not only was he dating their youngest daughter, Ann, but Pat and Arthur felt the bakery was at a stage of needing another baker, so Roger received the call and relocated to Armidale a mere two months later.

Meanwhile, Ann and Roger’s relationship was still going strong, even though Ann had just finished school and made the move to Sydney to work her dream job at CBC Bank. It quickly became evident to Ann after a short six month stint in the city that maybe that life wasn't meant for her. As Roger would say, Ann couldn’t stand to be apart from him, so she made the move to Armidale. However, Ann never informed her parents of the decision to leave Sydney, so when she turned up on their doorstep with her luggage in hand, she promptly explained that they either give her a job or she’d go on the dole. It was from that point on that both Ann and Roger were working alongside Pat and Arthur.

into a well known and reputable business, Pat and Arthur made the call to retire. By this stage, Roger had been baking alongside Arthur for 16 years, which saw him acquire many skills and create a lasting friendship with a great mate, who then became his father-in-law. In 1992, Ann and Roger were then given the opportunity to purchase the bakery and take it on to new and exciting things. Once the business was taken over, Moxon’s remained in the small Faulkner Street store for 12 months, before relocating to the

well known bakehouse located on Marsh Street.

This move saw the ability for Roger and Ann to introduce new baking equipment, which allowed a higher turnover of product and in return, saw the group of staff at Moxon’s grow as the business itself was doing. It soon became evident that the business was going to keep on growing and perhaps at a rate that the somewhat small bakehouse could not handle. After a successful 10 years of baking in Marsh Street, the call was made to move to a larger premises, which is now located on

Mann Street. With the help of Nick Rice, Roger and Ann were able to build the bakehouse purposely for what they needed. This ensured they could continue growing their business and keep up with their local and wholesale production.

Although all baking was moved to Mann Street, Marsh Street remained just as successful as it was prior to the move, and is just as successful today as it was all those years ago.

Moxon’s Bakery has continued to grow every year and due to an increase in demand across Armidale, two more smaller scale bakeries were opened up in town in the past couple of years.

Over the years, Moxon’s Bakery has grown from a small team of five to a strong group of 38 staff, who aim to produce quality products and

How has the baking equipment and systems changed over the years?

The Bourkes have supported the growth of the business through purchasing the latest baking technology. Some of the most recent purchases include the Edhard RVO depositor, the Simple Simon Pie Maker Junior, Pie Marking Systems, a new Provers, a mini rex bread roll plant and a Simple Simon Pie glossing machine. These were purchased specifically to increase outputs from the bake house, along with providing a consistent high quality product for the customer.

Roger and Ann have a close working relationship with staff. They are not managers who manage from an office. Roger and Ann together work on

the growth of the business. They employ Trent Rush as the overall business manager for Moxon’s, while Tracy does HR and admin along with supervising in all shops. Staff are therefore able to speak with management as they need, and Roger and Ann make it clear to staff that they are always willing to listen.

An essential part of ensuring high quality products is the training systems employed by Moxon's Bakery. All staff undergo induction training specific to their job description, including training in the safe operation procedures for all equipment they will use. All staff undergo food safety training with annual updates, and all staff are supported in formal training linked with the National Training Framework.

Currently we have eight bake staff (including a Head Baker and specialist pastry cook) along with four new apprentices, three packing staff, two distribution staff, thirteen retail staff, and two clerical staff. Moxon's Bakery is fortunate to have a stable staff, with a number of key staff having been employed with the business for over ten years.

What's new in the Centre Mall?

There were a number of factors which made us decide on the new location. With having the basics like the large fridge and storage, we made the decision to renovate and have a lovely new shop front called GRAB & GO, MOXON’S BAKERY. This shop has the convenience of the Mall, with people walking by all the time. It’s a real pick up and go

As business owners, Roger and Ann Bourke are generous in their supporting of local charity and school fundraising events, as they believe in supporting and upholding the local community. With great regularity they donate

items as requested to assist local schools, clubs and charities.

In particular, every year the bakery assists schools and clubs with fundraising through pie drives. The pie drive allows schools and clubs to sell both meat and fruit pies and use the profits to raise the funds they need.

What intrests do you have as a family ?

We live on a small property just outside of Armidale. As Megan was growing up,

we travelled regularly to keep up with her equestrian dreams and tried to travel as much as well could. When we weren’t sleeping in horse floats or walking cross country courses, we were always planning trips away to catch up with family and friends.

Now that Megan has completed her schooling, we spend our time travelling as much as we can, whether it be overseas or in our caravan and still try to see our family as much as possible.

Whether in Armidale or somewhere overseas - we love to explore new and exciting places.

There is always something to do fiddling around at home with the cows and sheep,

feeding, fences to fix, dams and troughs to look at. And the local rodeo! We love to support the local horse events; our daughter is a keen rider.

Plans for the future?

More travelling, of course. On a serious note, Moxon’s Bakery prides itself on commitment to excellence and ensuring that the items are always produced to the highest standard. he Christmas school holidays present a great opportunity to take the children and explore some of the unique experiences in the region. The National Parks offer some wonderful family friendly walks, and one of the best is the Weeping Rock Walk in New England National Park.

Native wildlife, especially echidna, are out and about, and Gara Gorge is a fabulous area for paddling in the fresh water, having a picnic or BBQ and if you are lucky, maybe experience platypus playing in the water.

The Armidale Visitor Information Centre has a comprehensive list of bushwalks in the region, detailing distance, difficulty level and expected completion time.

The New England High Country region has some wonderful natural swimming holes to escape the summer heat. Some of these include The Blue Hole at Gara Gorge, Georges Junction on the Old Kempsey Road, Dumaresq Dam, Mount Yarrowyck, Wooldridge Recreation Reserve near Uralla and Wattle Flat in the Styx River State Forest.

The Dutton Trout Hatchery has aquarium displays, guided tours, fish feeding, educational tours and an audio visual show.

They are located on Point Look Out road near the New England National Park.

Greenhill Orchard in Arding produce luscious summer fruits such as cherries, apricots, peaches, plums and nectarines, followed by a large harvest of apples and pears in autumn. They offer a farm gate experience with an opportunity to source the fruit directly from the grower, and visit a working family orchard. The farm gate is open Monday to Saturday, 9am - 5pm.

Fossicking for gold is a great activity for children (and adults) of all ages. Fossicking pans can be hired from the Uralla Visitor Information Centre, and from there you can visit either Rocky River or the Wooldridge Recreation Reserve. Additionally, these areas also provide natural swimming holes for children to enjoy in the warmer weather.

All Armidale households need a copy of Out and About with Kids, so please drop into the Visitor Information Centre to collect any information on these activities and find out about the many other treasures in New England High Country.

Whilst many businesses choose to have a holiday between Christmas and New Year, the Visitor Information Centre, Heritage Bus Tour and Saumarez Homestead will be very busy looking after our visitors (except Christmas Day). This month we kick off the Christmas festivities, with the Christmas in the Mall on Thursday 3rd December. The fun will commence at 4:30pm, with markets, food and music until 9:30pm. The Welders Dog will be setting up a pop-up-bar with locally brewed and boutique beers. Come and celebrate Christmas and do a little Christmas shopping at one of our local boutiques.

Wednesday 9th December, Carols by Candlelight will be held in Central Park from 6pm until 9:30pm. Entertainment from the Armidale Pipe Band, Armidale City Band, St Peter’s Bell Ringers, and of course, Christmas Carols and a visit from Santa.

he Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal is Australia's largest Christmas gift appeal, having collected more than six million gifts since its inception in 1988. We are proud that the Appeal is now a Christmas tradition - not only for Kmart and The Salvation Army, but for thousands of Australians who donate each year. Toys, personal items, gifts cards and alike are some of the popular items that are given to The Salvation Army through the Kmart wishing tree to provide Christmas to those who are less fortunate in our community.

As we did last year, The Salvation Army will spend over $4,000 on food items and food cards that will be distributed into the community over the month of December, that will bring much needed relief to those who find themselves in hard times.

Tell us about the Hardman family ...

The Hardman family have lived in the New England area since the mid 19th Century. My parents, Ernie and Olive, had five children, twenty grand-children, thirty eight great grandchildren and ten great great-grandchildren and four guide dogs, many of whom still live in the New England area. My sons, Phil, David and Richard have all learned various trades within the motor industry. After 60 years I retired, and I’m very proud to say that there is a third generation of Hardmans in the motor vehicle trade.

How has the company changed over the past 85 years?

Hardman’s has expanded from a humble

backyard set up to the multi franchise company that it is today, surviving the Depression, a World War and numerous economic downturns.

In the beginning there were two staff, and over the years we have employed many people, started many careers, trained many great apprentices and adapted to many changes. From employees and technology to franchises and location, we now employ 20 full-time great local people in five departments. The franchises represented motor vehicles, farm machinery and motor cycles over the past 85 years, with brands like: Austin, Studebaker, Willys, Overland, McCormack, Allis-Charmers, International, Graham, Norton, BSA, Triumph, Sunbeam, James, Panther, Waratah, Douglas, General Motors, Chrysler, Toyota, Mercedes Benz, David Brown, Field Marshall, Daewoo, Polaris, Nissan and Honda.

Tell us about your services ...

We are the local representative for New Nissan and Honda vehicles and stock a large range of quality used vehicles also. We have a state of the art service centre that can service all makes and models, and a parts department that can source any part/accessory for any vehicle. We are local agents for Ironman 4x4 accessories and qualified fitters and stockists of Britax baby seats. We provide vehicle detailing, vehicle finance and CTP green slips.

Tell us about your team ...

They are great! Quite a number of the team have been with us for years; they range from employees who have been with us for thirty plus years to a new recruit who has only been

with us for a month, who keeps saying she “loves her job”. On my way through the workshop/service and parts department, everyone stops to chat, and the office staff couldn’t be more helpful. The sales team have many years of experience between them and can provide the perfect vehicle match for you and your family.

How has the motor vehicle evolved over the last 85 years?

When my dad first started the business, vehicles averaged $640, with 25 - 30 horse power, 3 - 4 gears … sometimes the gears were outside the car. By the ‘50s when I started, the average cost was $1,500 and there was the introduction of the first V8 engines. The modern vehicle averages $33,000, has up to six gears, some with automatic transmissions with manual modes. Vehicles are much more complicated, but they are safer, smarter and more diverse. From crumple zones, intelligent park assist, lane keep assist, collision mitigation systems, blind spot monitoring, satellite navigation, and around view monitoring, it is no wonder they are talking about autonomous vehicles.

Plans for the future ...

Hardman’s has also been a proud supporter of the local community over this time, sponsoring all codes of sports, community events, educational awards etc. and will continue to do so. With the support of New England, we look forward to celebrating 100 years in business.

When I first started Policing at Pennant Hills, I was one of two females performing duty there.

Being male orientated, there was a culture entrenched back then. The NSW Police has continued to recruit and support women in Policing and have taken great steps into dealing with equal opportunity and equality in the workplace. In my opinion, the organisation has done a great job.

What would you say to any female considering joining the NSW Police?

NSW Police is a very challenging and rewarding job. It offers long term career prospects. It is not for everyone, due to the sometimes confronting issues that have to be dealt with long term and on a daily basis, along with a large amount of shift work. In saying that, I work with a great bunch of dedicated officers whose camaraderie is second to none. I still enjoy coming to work and seeing the community’s problems being fixed. I like the country aspect of Policing. By living in Armidale, I am able to build a rapport with the community and take ownership to ensure we all live in a safer city. I give this advice to both males and females considering a career in the NSW Police Force.

e have seen a new group of island visitors in Armidale. Where were they from, and why were they here?

Many Armidale residents noticed some new faces in our community from the Republic of Nauru. For five weeks the University of New England (UNE) and the Armidale community hosted 19 Nauruan UNE students as part of the larger Nauru Teacher Education Project (NTEP).

NTEP is a capacity building project that is a partnership between UNE and the Department of Education, Nauru Government. It is funded by DFAT Australia and started in July 2013. We currently have 37 students enrolled in an Associate Degree in Teaching (Pacific Focus), and a subset

of nineteen Nauruan pre-service and in-service teachers elected to do a 20-day professional experience (also known as practicum) in Armidale.

During the visit, two officials from the Department of Education, Nauru, also visited Armidale for one week, to gain a first-hand perspective on what the students were experiencing in Australia.

How did the project come about?

As a result of UNE working alongside the Nauruan People through curriculum design and teacher professional development, discussions emerged concerning the need for a different approach to teacher education in Nauru. Dr Maria Gaiyabu, Secretary of Education in Nauru, made the strategic move to consider innovative study options for the Department of Education. The Government of Nauru decided to tender an in-

ternational provider to deliver teacher education qualifications in Nauru.

Nauru has had a long history of employing expatriate teachers, and this project targets increasing the number of local teachers in Nauru. There is much to be gained in communities where local people are the teachers and role models for their own children.

How long has UNE been working in partnership with Nauru?

The School of Education at UNE has worked collaboratively with Nauru on improving outcomes for school children for the past five years.

It began with the development and implementation of a Mathematics Curriculum that was specifically designed for the Nauruan context.

The syllabus provided a pathway for Nauruan

students to achieve the Queensland Certificate of Education in Year 12.

Why did Nauru Government choose UNE to deliver teacher education?

UNE was chosen to deliver the teacher education due to the flexible approach we offered and the sustained relationship that had been built over a long period of time. We had the advantage of hitting the ground running, as we have a core of academics who have experience working in Pacific Island contexts similar to Nauru.

What sets the UNE model apart from previous study experienced in Nauru?

In many remote locations, such as Pacific Island countries, education providers often reduce an extended programme of study (say three months) into a short intensive (often two weeks). UNE

Why are the students in Armidale?

The Associate Degree in Teaching (Pacific Focus) includes the opportunity to complete a 20-day professional experience placement in Armidale. If they are unable to be away from home for this extended period, the students can complete this component of study in Nauruan schools.

Our project team was delighted with the response from the Armidale schools. These schools

already devote a significant amount of time to mentoring and supporting local pre-service teachers annually.

Despite the increased workload, six schools in Armidale have provided a supportive professional learning environment for the Nauruan students. These schools are Armidale Community Preschool, Adventure Land Preschool, St Peter’s Preschool, St Mary’s Primary School, and O’Connor Catholic College.

How diverse are the teaching backgrounds

of the Nauruan students in the course?

Most of the students are enrolled in the Associate Degree in Teaching (Pacific Focus). This course is unique to UNE, and was developed as part of the NTEP project. Within the Associate Degree there are three pathways - early childhood education, primary education, and secondary education.

Beyond the Associate Degree, UNE offers a pathway to further study to achieve a Bachelor of Education (Pacific Focus), and the opportunity for students to specialise in inclusive education.

During this visit, two of our Nauruan students

have been inspired by the inclusive ethos at Sandon Primary School, and they have plans to initiate similar strategies in Nauru.

How are the students benefiting from the programme?

Apart from benefitting from UNE’s education expertise, this project has come closer to achieving equity in access to teacher education in Nauru. The students are able to achieve an Australian Quality Framework compliant qualification, whilst remaining with their families in their own community. They are not separated from the social side of their life and they have the opportunity to balance family, work, social, and religious aspects. Some of our students in Nauru have six

items that ranged from hulas, beautiful island singing, male dances, a moving speech about Angam Day delivered by Mrs Jeva Jose, and video trip around the island. Charlie Serow provided a medley of Australian songs at the end of the evening.

Did the group venture beyond Armidale?

During the five weeks, the group had one weekend in Coffs Harbour. The highlights in Coffs were the opportunity for more shopping and a visit to the Big Banana. The water slide antics were a “real hoot”. Most memorable for myself was the night at the Coffs Harbour Bowling Club, where at the completion of the meal the students provided more dancing, back-up singing, and enthusiasm than the one-man band playing covers had ever seen. You know it was a good night when the staff thank the guests for providing the entertainment for the night and finish with the question, “When are you all coming back?”

Another highlight for the group was a weekend trip to Leconfield Farm for a taste test

of a Jackaroo and Jillaroo school. They had a wonderful time working with sheep, collecting bush-tucker, horse-riding, whip-cracking, and lassooing. Again, the lament was, “Can we stay longer?”

Is there a graduation coming up?

On 14th May 2016, UNE will be celebrating the successful completion of the first cohort of students in the Associate Degree in Nauru. It will be time to celebrate the achievements of a pioneer group of teachers in Nauru who will help shape Nauru’s future education. We have decided to host the event in Nauru, where friends and family of the students who have played an important role in their studies can attend.

Are there opportunities for students from Australia to do professional experience in Nauru?

Yes! In 2014 we had two UNE pre-service primary education students put their hand up to complete an additional professional experience session in Nauru.

Aaron Kennewell and Renee Watts travelled to

Nauru and taught alongside Nauruan teachers for three weeks. This was a win-win for the teachers in Nauru and our domestic students from UNE, who benefited from the cultural and educational exchanges.

Aaron and Renee were warmly welcomed into the Nauruan community. In addition to working in schools, they enjoyed an island wedding, beach picnics, swimming at boat harbour, motorbike riding around the island and deep-sea fishing with Kenneth from Equatorial Fishing Charters in Nauru. It is a wonderful feeling to be deep-sea fishing when you are 100 m from the sand.

What is next in the UNE/Nauru partnership?

We have two exciting new ventures in 2016.

One project focuses on enhancing creativity and inclusiveness in Nauruan schools. This will include the collaborative design of a Nauruan Creative Arts Curriculum and a strategy to enhance inclusive education in Nauru. The second project is a health education initiative that empowers local Nauruans through participation in a flexibly

delivered Diploma in Community Health and Wellbeing.

How did the students enjoy Armidale?

The greatest indicators of the levels of enjoyment are witnessed in the smiles, the laughter, and the desire to come back to Armidale to study at UNE or holiday with family.

The NTEP team has been overwhelmed with the level of support provided by the Armidale community to the Nauruan students. Everywhere they ventured, the Nauruan group was warmly welcomed and assisted.

We also wish to thank each of the Armidale schools involved for the commitment they have shown to building teaching capacity in Nauru.

The students leave with a multitude of teaching ideas and resources to take back to their nation. Some of the students have conveyed that this opportunity to work alongside teachers in Armidale has enabled them to experience what it really means to have a student-centred approach to teaching.

REPUTATION

A

person or small company (“the aggrieved”) may be defamed when someone (“the publisher”) publicly makes or publishes untrue statements that malign the reputation of the aggrieved. An apology and retraction by the publisher of an untrue statement is usually the first step to resolving a dispute particularly where the publisher has made the statement in error. When a publisher does not properly retract an untrue or malicious statement the law of defamation may be invoked to protect the aggrieved party’s reputation.

Impact of Defamation Stating or publishing comments without proper enquiry combined with reckless allegations about an individual may be considered as malicious and defamatory ultimately causing a negative impact on a person’s reputation and self esteem disrupting and maligning their achievements in business, social, sporting, political and cultural associations that may have been built up over several years. The emotional impact on the aggrieved person can be overwhelming causing anxiety, hurt feelings, financial loss and depression. Individuals and companies may suffer both economic and non-economic loss. If the publisher is reluctant or refuses to withdraw untrue statements or published material, an aggrieved person may proceed to take action against the publisher.

Resolving Matters Without Going to Court In NSW the Defamation Act 2005 (‘the Act”) provides the steps involved in taking action against a publisher of defamatory material or statements. The objects of the Act however, provide that law of defamation is not intended to place unreasonable limits on freedom of expression and, in particular, on the publication and discussion of matters of public interest and importance.

Such action may be at common law or may follow statutory provisions. Defamatory material does not have to be in writing and includes slander. The Act also provides for the circumstances in which a defence may be available to the publisher such as where the statement is substantially true or where a publisher may have parliamentary 59 new england focus.

or other privilege. Under provisions of the Act, not only are individuals entitled to take action in defamation but also not-for-profit organisations and companies that employ less than 10 full time equivalent staff.

The first step to resolve defamation matters in accordance with the Act is for an aggrieved person to provide a concerns notice to the publisher. The concerns notice must be in writing and inform the publisher of the false and defamatory allegations that they have attributed to the aggrieved person. This is referred to as the imputations.

The publisher then has 28 days in which it may make an offer to make amends either in relation to the matter generally or limited to part of the defamatory imputations. An offer to make amends must be in writing and include an offer to publish in writing a correction or retraction or to tell people that the published or stated material was incorrect and defamatory. The offer to make amends must include, among other things, an offer to pay the expenses reasonably incurred by the aggrieved before the offer was made (such as legal costs).

Going to Court If an offer is not provided or does not satisfy statutory requirements, the aggrieved may take formal action to sue the publisher through either the District or Supreme Court of NSW or, in some cases, through the Federal Court system. Defamation matters cannot be filed in the Local Court. An action must be filed by way of a Statement of Claim within 12 months of the defamatory material being published. Apart from any economic loss, the aggrieved may claim compensation up to $250,000.00. The level of compensation however, if any, is ultimately determined by the Court. In addition to compensation the losing party will be usually be liable to pay the winning parties legal costs.
