Welcome to the October 2013 edition of Manning-Great Lakes FOCUS! know it’s clichéd, but I truly can’t believe it’s October already. I keep seeing reminders on social networking sites that there are only ‘X’ number of shopping days or weekends until Christmas – and that’s really starting to hit home!

I know I need to get organised, but I must admit it’s a bit hard to get motivated because there are always so many other things to see and do and so many people to meet with fabulous stories to tell. Christmas shopping ... I think I’ll procrastinate just a little longer.

ON THE COVER One of the amazing shows you can get out to see very soon is Taree Art Council’s production of Cabaret. The talented cast of 16 includes Jeremy Miller from the MEC, Stacey Sedlen, Chris Alcock and Krystle Molloy-Louis.

Read our interview with Cabaret’s Director, Gayle Cameron, to find out full details of the production – it’s going to be a stunning spectacle!

The Great Lakes area is also hosting a spectacular new event in John Wright Park, Tuncurry on November 2 – the Lakeside Festival.

The festival will showcase local food, wine, music and artists.

The Taree Arts Council presents Cabaret – a stunning production that showcases an absolute wealth of local theatre talent! Director Gayle Cameron says the show has a modern, edgy feel – and the ability to transport audiences back into that unforgettable period in history – the rise of Nazi Germany …

i Gayle. What’s your background locally and in the performing arts sector? I come from a dance and theatre background and have always been involved in performing arts. I was fortunate when younger to have a range of diverse opportunities, appearing in a classical ballet company, theatre restaurants and nightclubs (none like the Kit Kat Klub from Cabaret, I must stress!)

How did you become involved with the Taree Art Council’s production of Cabaret – and why was Cabaret specifically chosen as a performance piece? After recently directing Cats and Miss Saigon, I was looking for a musical that had an edgy, modern feel to it. Even though Cabaret was first performed many decades ago, the multi-award winning, newly revised version of the show really captured my interest. This exciting version has a glittering, modern twist and is staged quite differently to the original version, but contains the familiar songs audiences love. I knew we had the talent in our area to perfectly suit the characters in the show, so I put forward a proposal to Taree Arts Council to produce Cabaret in 2013. It was time to bring this hit musical to a new generation of theatre- goers.

Please provide us with a brief synopsis of 4

Cabaret ... what’s the story about? Cabaret tells the story of a young American author, Cliff Bradshaw, who arrives in Berlin at the dawn of the Nazi era. He becomes infatuated with the giddy, gaudy decadence of the city epitomised by the sexy, seedy nightclub called the Kit Kat Klub and its charming but dangerous Emcee. He falls in love with the club’s leading lady, the flighty, madcap Sally Bowles.

While they drift in this amoral atmosphere, life outside turns ugly. As the play reaches its climax, Cliff and Sally’s landlady, Fraulein Schneider, decides to break off her intended engagement to a Jewish fruiterer, Herr Schultz, because she fears the repercussions if the Nazis come to power.

Cliff decides to leave Berlin, but Sally, believing “life is a cabaret”, stays behind. The final scene has been called the most spine-tingling, chilling, thought provoking conclusion of any musical.

Who are the various cast members, and what characters are they playing? Cabaret has a cast of sixteen. They are: Stacey Sedlen, who plays Sally Bowles; Chris Alcock, who plays Clifford Bradshaw; Jeremy Miller is the Emcee; Kate Dunn and John Dooley, who play Fraulein Schneider and Herr Schultz respectively; Paul Eade plays Ernst Ludwig; and Krystle Molloy-Louis is Fraulein Kost. The Kit Kat Klub girls are Mikayla Atkins, Victoria Bell, Amy Crozier, Lauren Green, Liz Hall, and Mikaela Norris. Playing several different supporting roles are Alex Blenkin, Zac Rayson and Alex Wilson.

What have been some of the highlights for you working with the cast on this produc-

tion? Have there been any challenges? I have such a talented, hardworking cast and creative team, that rehearsals have been a joy. I’ve gained great satisfaction from watching the cast grow into their roles and develop strong characterisations. For me as a director, the greatest challenge is to not only tell the story of the cabaret that pretends that “life is beautiful” and trouble free, but also create the atmosphere of crackling tension and simmering undertones of a country on the brink of catastrophe. The cast would probably say one of the most difficult tasks is remembering an authentic German accent while singing, dancing and maintaining character. Vocal coach Helen Monckton, is doing a great job developing accurate accents.

We have a live stage band, dressed as members of the Kit Kat Klub, on the top floor of the two level set, under the talented direction of Don Secomb. Hit Musical Cabaret TAREE Arts Council’s production of the hit musical Cabaret opens at the Manning Entertainment Centre on November 1, starring Stacey Sedlen in the iconic role of Sally Bowles (made famous by Liza Minnelli in the 1972 film).

Full of musical numbers, great dancing, and a storyline revolving around relationships, the audience will be transported to the dawn of the 1930s in Berlin, Germany.

The Kit Kat Klub is a place of theatrical and decadent celebration and, throughout the show, serves as a constant metaphor for the tenuous and threatening state of the late Weimar Republic.

NSW Police Force will loan the authentic Norman Lindsay oil painting titled ‘Woman and Satyr’ to the community of Greater Taree for a period of 12 months.

After the re-discovery of the painting in 2010, the NSW Police Force established Operation Matisse – a search to try to locate the owner of the artwork. To date the owner remains a mystery.

Manning Great Lakes Local Area Commander, Superintendent Peter Thurtell, said the painting was most likely seized by police decades ago.

i Scott. What’s your school/ work/family background in the local area? I was born in Forster and have spent my whole life up until now here. I don’t really think there’s any better place to grow up − especially having all of your family and friends there.

Currently I’m on the Gold Coast, and I really love it up here. I miss all my family and friends back home and especially the uncrowded waves, but I think everyone needs to leave Forster at some stage. The world’s a big place, and I think you shouldn’t be restricted to just one town. But in saying that, I am always going to go back there … it’s magnetic.

What was the very first camera you ever owned ... and just to challenge your memory, can you remember what the first subject was you ever set out to intentionally capture on film? Ahh … my very first camera! I think it all started out with a Pentax.

I can’t remember which model, but I remember buying it off eBay, and I was super stoked when I got home from school and I had a parcel with my name on it.

My photography all started out with my love for the beach. I used to run down to Burgess Beach every afternoon to surf, and one day it just clicked to me that I wanted to take photos of this beautiful place. Ever since then, I’ve just been in love with photography … not just surf photography, but all aspects. It’s no longer a hobby to me; it’s something I want to do for the rest of my life.

What types of images do you most like to shoot – and why? That’s a pretty tough question.

As I said before, there’s just so many different types of photography! if I had to narrow it down to one, I would have to go with my passion and say surf photography; there’s nothing better than just hanging in the sun at the beach taking photos of something

you love, especially on the Gold Coast, with the talent and the quality of the waves.

During the course I have started, I’m doing a lot more fashion photography. It’s really interesting and is definitely an industry I could also see myself working in.

What type of camera and lenses are your preferred tools? I currently use a Canon 7D, and I have a few lenses.

My favourite would have to be my Canon 1.4 50 mm, just because it’s so sharp. But I’m saving up for new gear all the time; it’s just so expensive − especially when you’re studying!

What training/courses/special experiences have you had to help you learn your photography skills? I am currently studying my Diploma of PhotoImaging 3 days a week at the Australian Institute of Creative Design on the Gold Coast. Prior to this I was still in school, so I’ve basically taught myself through YouTube and online tutorials. Photoshop is a major module of my course, and it’s practically the darkroom of today’s world. There’s so much to learn! It’s such an awesome program, but frustrating at times too!

What do you think is the single most important element for photographers when it comes to getting an amazing shot? Definitely lighting is the biggest role in taking a good photograph. If your lighting and exposures are off, then you’re not going to get an amazing shot … it’s as simple as that. The best time to take photos would have to be early morning or late afternoon; the colours from the sunrise and sunset

are just amazing and always make for good photographs.

But close behind lighting I would say creativity plays the next big role; anyone can pick up their iPhone and take a pretty good photo. It takes creativity to make your photography different to everyone else’s in the world.

Where’s somewhere you’d like to take your camera that you’ve never been? Why would you like to go there? There are so many places I want to go, I don’t think I could even pick one place. But, one of the many places that has always interested me is Iceland and the Nordic countries, purely because they are so untouched; it is what it was like thousands of years ago there.

What would you ultimately like to achieve with your photography? My dream job would have to be to travel the world taking photos, seeing things and places that I normally wouldn’t see and capturing this for the world. That’s what I would like to achieve.

Dear Alan, I am 64 years old and between my wife and I we have $500,000 in superannuation in a managed fund and my accountant suggested a self managed fund is a cheaper option and that I might get better performance.

I am about to retire and my wife, who is 3 years younger, will work for about a year.

What are your views? JD Dear JD, I’ll state from the outset that I have clients that I assist in management of self-managed funds, but they are all in that arrangement because they have a desire to actively manage the portfolio themselves and they also enjoy doing it.

There are a number of questions for you to satisfy yourself before you consider the selfmanaged fund option.

One is whether you want the responsibility of being a trustee of your own fund and how you would feel about relinquishing control in years to come if you are not capable of managing your affairs.

I see far too often self-managed funds being established and the member/ trustees then place the proceeds into managed funds because they do not have the confidence to select and manage their own investment portfolio.

In that case, the costs in a self-managed fund

directly and literally self-manage either part or all of the superannuation assets, then a self -managed fund may not be the best option for you.

The consequences of a non-compliant fund can be severe, and it is crucial that a strong relationship is maintained with the accountant, financial adviser and the member of the fund.

Successes Some clients love the involvement of managing part of the portfolio themselves and seeing if they can outperform the fund managers particular where there is a clear partnership with the trustee, me as adviser and their accountant.

JD, it all comes down to how you value your time in retirement and if you would enjoy having a hands on role managing your money.

If it is a chore or a worry, then you need to think carefully if a SMF is really for you.

If the SMF option ticks the boxes, then having a well constructed investment strategy with the assistance of a Financial Planner who can work with you and your accountant, is an important step in the process.

Phil Bourke creates beautiful objects from timber. A true artist, Phil allows the piece of timber he’s crafting dictate what the finished item will be – a painstaking process that can often take many weeks.

hat first sparked your interest in working with timber, Phil?

I’ve been working with timber since I was young. I was always making things out of timber, which I found enjoyable.

In the ’80s I purchased my first lathe, a small McMillan lathe, to make toys and started experimenting making weed pots, vases, bowls and boxes and realised that I enjoyed turning.

In the ’90s I went with my wife to visit a friend and noticed he was burning burl on an open fire; we salvaged these and took them home [burl are the lumpy or knotty outgrowths found on trees; they usually have an interesting grain or pattern]. This is when I really started to develop my style. I soon realised the colour was more vibrant in burl than timber; these pieces were the first work that was accepted at Gannon House Gallery − the Rocks.

What training have you had?

I’ve never had formal lessons. I spent time watching former peer and woodturner Ted Watt and read a lot of magazines and articles to help me understand the craft. I’ve spent hundreds of hours on the lathe, and I’m still learning and amazed at what can be created. Every piece is individual and a one off.

I do not copy and try not to use other people’s ideas; I let the timber tell me how it should be turned.

How long has your business, Alturnate Timbers, been established, and what does it specialise in?

I’ve just recently completed a small business course with Compass in Taree, so my business Alturnate Timbers has only been open for about six weeks and I am in the process of designing a web page, setting up networks and approaching more galleries.

The business involves woodturning, providing turned bowls, wall shields, vases, jewellery boxes, commissioned pieces, ornate and traditional turning ranging from 100 mm to 1.8 m that are contemporary to artistic high quality and functional pieces using Australian recycled timber.

Describe some of the more large scale, complicated works you’ve created recently ...

Some of my work is put into series for collectors; this includes the Mayan Series smaller River Red Gum burl, 250 mm deep by 250 mm diameter. This piece is turned from solid burl, bark intact, which is then removed to reveal the beautiful pimply texture.

The pieces I create are based on past cultures to sea creatures − such as the Oceania Series. I recently completed a bowl using Western Australian Jarrah burl, 180 mm deep by 600 mm diameter for the series. The piece represents a jellyfish floating in the ocean, leaving the natural edge intact, turning the outer rim downwards to give the illusion of the shape of the jellyfish and keeping the natural features of the timber.

The Atlantean Series include ribbed bowls using Red Male burl; pieces are carved and textured to enhance the beauty and colour. I also recently completed a large River Red Gum burl; this piece is approx 400 mm deep by 500 mm diameter and was turned out of raw burl weighing thirty kilograms. It’s part of a series called Gifts from the Forest Series II, and represents the inherent beauty in timber.

A Red Cedar burl, which was challenging; the piece was very chaotic because of the shape and because of the rarity of cedar burl, I wanted to keep as much timber as possible.

I managed to keep its features by turning a bowl within the chaos.

What kinds of timber do you most commonly use for your pieces?

The Lakeside Festival is a not for profit event run by volunteers with the intention of creating an annual event for the community. Funds raised from admission will be put toward the 2014 festival. Tug Boat 'BJ' will be part of the on water exhibits. The boat was built in John Wright Park in 1949 by Alf Jahnsen and used as the punt before the Forster-Tuncurry bridge was built. It then served as the smallest Tug Boat in Sydney harbour for 21 years. BJ is now privately owned and being restored and will soon be returning by sea voyage to Wallis Lake. Also on show by the water’s edge will be the Marine Rescue vessel 'Amanda Lani' and an exhibition of historical and locally built boats. Through various funding initiatives, teacher Brian Jones has worked with students at North Coast TAFE to build 25

Patrick Friesen, Ms G’s (Asian) Hailing from Canada, Patrick leads the daily charge in the popular Ms G’s kitchen at Sydney’s Potts Point, to bring diners an anarchic, twisted take on Asian fusion food. Who knew that Beards could be such a serious topic of conversation? As Louise Beaumont found out, despite the quirkiness of this band and their chosen theme, beards are no laughing matter.

Nathaniel Beard fills us in ...

H

ow many of you are in the band – and who has the best beard? There are four of us in the band. And as for who has the best beard? Well, I don't want to toot my own horn, but I would say … that I have the best beard.

Describe your beard then. My beard is like, just a big bush ranger beard that comes down to my chest … it's pretty impressive.

So there are four of you in the band. Tell us how you got together and how 'The Beards' was born ... Some of us met at university, where we joined a Beards Club. We would just get together and meet and talk about beards.

(Laughs.)

We'd stroke each other's beards. And we would try and get more people to join, but there were only three of us in the group. (Laughs.)

And beards weren't very popular back then – this was in the early part of last decade. In the early 2000s, beards were not popular at all; we copped a lot of flak, and we didn't think that was really fair. So we would stick together in solidarity and eventually we met our fourth member, whom we saw busking on campus and singing songs about beards. We thought we could join forces with him and use music as a vehicle to promote beards. So we did ... and ever since that day, we haven't looked back.

So musically, what are your foundations – are you a Rock band? Yeah, we think Rock is pretty fair description – that's a pretty beardy genre. But really we don't like to limit ourselves to any musical style, because like beards, music is

And how many different beard topics are there? Well, I like to think there are limitless topics in the field of beard related songs.

We have currently written 40 songs about beards and released 3 albums. And we are currently working on our fourth beard related album.

Ok, so what are the stereotypical things that go with beards? Everything goes with beards; that is the thing. For example, you can wear any type of clothing ... think of any kind of clothing and add a beard to it; it's an improvement.

Likewise with music; add any type of beardedness to it, and it will instantly become better.

I see there is a comedy element to what you do. We like to entertain. If people find our lyrics funny, it is merely a coincidence. We are actually quite serious about beards.

I thought you might have had someone who wrote your material for you and added in comedy? No, we write all our own material and sort of use our own beards as inspiration.

So you are very serious about it; it's not funny? It's not funny to us. (Laughs.)

Have you been touring the world far and wide the past year? Yes, we have been inspiring lots of people to have a

beard, and we are not going to stop until everyone has a beard.

This December you will hit the stage at FOTSUN in Port Macquarie, yes?

Yes, that will be our first festival and show back in Australia after we tour North America. It's going to be great to perform at the start of the Australian summer festival season, as that is normally shaving season. So we want to remind people that having a beard is not just for the winter months – it is an all year round thing. And also to remind people of the many benefits of having a beard.

So what are your keys tips for maintaining and looking after a beard? The most important tip for anyone who wants to maintain or grow a large beard is to not shave. That is really important.

In terms of maintenance, you have to treat it like you treat hair. You have to wash it, condition it, treat it. Most importantly – be proud of your beard.

ecently the Winemakers Federation of Australia published a very useful Responsible Winery Initiative publication that lists a variety of these health issues, providing the facts around how wine does or doesn’t impact a variety of these conditions. I thought it might be useful to share some of these facts with you. The following is directly from the Winemakers Federation publication, Wine & Health Information.

Yeast allergy/intolerance All wine is produced from the fermentation of grape juice by yeast (whether naturally present in the juice or added).

However, the vast majority of yeast is removed prior to bottling, and generally wine can be consumed without risk of an allergic reaction.

Drinking when pregnant There is no definitive evidence on what is a ‘no-effect’ level of wine consumption. For that reason, the NHMRC* now recommends it is safest not to drink while pregnant or breast feeding. Pregnant women certainly should not get intoxicated, as the alcohol component passes quickly into an unborn child’s body. Alcohol also passes quickly into breast milk.

Coeliac’s disease Additives containing gluten cannot be used in still and dessert wines in Australia or overseas, so these can safely be consumed. Australian sparkling and fortified wines also do not contain gluten, Drinking wine but some imported wines without food may do. ur

Asthma If your asthma is not triggered by sulphur dioxide, then any kind of wine can be consumed with minimal risk of inducing an asthma attack. If you are ‘sulphitesensitive’, however, wines that contain a lower concentration of sulphur dioxide are recommended. For example, those wines labelled as ‘organic’ contain approximately 50% less sulphur dioxide. Cask wines, which can contain a higher concentration of sulphur dioxide, should not be consumed. No wine is sulphur dioxide free, however, as 10 - 50 mg/L of sulphur dioxide is produced naturally during the fermentation by yeast cells.

Diabetes Diabetics can consume wine, but preferably with food. Drinking wine without food can cause your blood sugar level to fall unexpectedly, particularly if you are insulin or medication dependent. Diabetics should not drink more than a moderate amount, as the alcohol can react with many prescribed medications and worsen the effects of diabetes (e.g. increasing blood pressure).

Restaurant Profile

With so many people having a variety of health issues, it can be a minefield trying to determine what you can and can’t eat and drink without having some form of reaction specific to your particular health issue.

Alcohol affects the reproductive system and may make it more difficult to become pregnant. Any adverse effects, however, quickly abate when consumption stops or reduces. *National Health & Medical Research Council.

Vegetarians Whether vegetarians can drink wine depends on the person and wine in question.

Some wines are clarified with egg albumin (egg protein), casein (milk protein), gelatin (Australian beef tissue) or isinglass (fish tissue), all of which are derived from animals – although the clarifying agent is removed prior to bottling and hence does not remain in the finished wine.

Wine that is labelled as ‘organic’ may still have been clarified with casein or gelatin.

So hopefully that helps clarify some of the questions many of us have relating to modern day intolerances/conditions and wine drinking.

I have a little secret! Yes, it is rather contradictory to my role as writer of this column ... but I often enjoy staying home! o ometimes people think I go to the o opening of a lunchbox, but I am n not actually out every night. I love a quiet night on the farm with a g glass or two of wine, or a quick trip up to the neighbour’s place for a cheese platter and a glass of sparkles. I always seem to get more than one invitation for events that fall on the same night and then I have to make the dreaded decision (not easy for a Libran) on which one to attend. This past month I have been out a lot, and to birthday parties rather than the more formal events that I often attend. So I have let my hair down a bit in readiness for this month’s big birthday; I can’t believe that I am almost 50, but thankfully I am not the only one of my friends with the big 50 this year.

On Saturday 21 September, Grahame and I and round 70 others attended the lovely Amanda Tate’s 50th birthday, held at the newly opened Martine’s Riverview Wine Bar. We enjoyed tasty canapés, bubbly and birthday cake with some lovely speeches from Amanda’s family. I especially liked the speech from her mum who told us a few home truths, and we heard a few more stories from her old Sydney friends. There was plenty of dancing with music by the lovely Stacey Lee, who can sing just about anything. Happy 50th, Amanda; it is obvious by the love shared at your party that you are a special lady, but I already suspected that!

On Friday, September 13, I attended and catered for a luncheon to celebrate the dual launch of the Legendary Pacific Coast Touring Guide and new graphic design business Well Creative. This new business is located in my

old café in Bent Street, Wingham and gives the cookery school a very cool neighbour. The Well Creative team has done an excellent job of fitting out the building, complete with a log wall and funky retro furniture; the stylish fit out reflects their very talented design style.

The guide is just one of the many wonderful publications that these guys have produced, and we are very excited to have them in Wingham, with all the more reason to visit our lovely town.

That same afternoon, I dashed out to an important engagement at the studio of 'Photography by Linda', where a group of lovely ladies had booked a ladies afternoon, complete with makeup by Tahlara's Skin Care & Beauty, hair by Split Enz Hair studio, and evening wear by 2 Love & 2 Honour Bridal & Formal Wear. We had fabulous fun: a few glasses of wine, some nibblies and lots of photos later, I headed back to the Well Creative studio, where their party was still going; it was a great way to spend a Friday. The next day I woke to see stunning photos of all the ladies already uploaded to Facebook. Then I went back to the school to teach a Vietnamese cookery class for 9 people. We had a lovely day cooking and sharing lunch out under the awning in the sunshine. Vietnamese rolls, prawn salad and beef pho were on the menu, with yep ... you guessed it, a glass of wine.

That night, Saturday 14 September, we took the trek to Elands to attend Paul Kelly’s birthday party. I think he was actually celebrating turning 40, which was last year, but as he was away in New Zealand for the big one, he decided to have a party this year. The party was at The Mill, which is a simply amazing structure

that made an excellent venue for a party, complete with lounges, a stage, sculptures and art, lots of food and some fabulous local sounds, along with one very different band headed up by Paul Kelly, which was actually very entertaining. I witnessed all that I wrote about last month and had a fabulous time, even though my fear of heights was intensified on the trip down the mountain in the dark.

Locals would say that I am just a wuss, but we all have a fear of something. Happy birthday, Paul.

On Tuesday 10 September, a few Chamber members and I attended a lovely dinner prepared by the students and staff at Wingham High School, held by Wingham Rotary to raise funds towards the Wingham High School bus.

The bus is vitally important for small excursions, the shared curriculum program with other Taree schools and is also used to take the students to events such as sporting tournaments.

They raised over $1,600 on the night and the students did a fabulous job of preparing the food and delivering it to the tables, always with a smile. Guest speaker was Daniel Hender, who was a student at the school in 1997 and has since worked as a masseuse with the Australian cricket team, beach volley ball and ballet.

Tinonee Cottages held a glorious high tea in their grounds on the afternoon of Sunday 22 September. We partook in tea served in beautiful china and fabulous cupcakes from Cupcakes on the Manning, in a lovely garden setting. We all had the opportunity to look around the accommodation on offer and I must say it is very beautiful, a touch retro, a little vintage, all put together very tastefully. Tinonee is such a beautiful town with great views down

to the river, and these cottages look like the perfect getaway.

Talking of gardens, I think every garden should have fairies, so I wanted to write a little about a lovely event that happened a couple of months ago. Fairy Day is celebrated on June 24 each year and this year marked the first fairy party for Cappara fairy lover Lyn Heher. All the visitors to this fairy party wore very special fairy outfits. Guests started off the day with homemade sweets and tea served in china cups: high tea for fairies!

The games began with a competition to see who could find the first four leaf clover, then it was down to the creek to find beautiful natural love heart rocks, with the best one chosen as the winner. Guests then enjoyed a wander through Lyn's fairy gardens before heading in to sit by the fires and enjoy a beautiful home cooked fairy lunch. Fairy competitions were held all day, with lovely hand-made prizes awarded to the winners.

Lyn’s daughter, Blossom, was christened with her first pair of fairy wings on the day, and Lyn was such a proud fairy mother to see her wearing them. I think Fairy Day sounds perfect; don’t forget my invite next year, Lyn. Lots on this month: Old Bar Beach Festival on the long weekend and Wingham Akoostik Festival on October 19 and 20 are two major events to put on the calendar. Oh, and I turn 50!

Gloucester Sustainable Living Festival Gloucester Council in conjunction with community groups and supported by the Gloucester Project and Godwins energy, are holding the Gloucester Sustainable Living Festival on October 12, 2013. The Festival incorporates the three pillars of sustainability – the environment, community and local business. The Festival aims to demonstrate the sustainability of Gloucester and to highlight the community spirit and economic viability of the area.

The Festival will be held on Saturday, October 12 from 8.30am to 3pm in conjunction with the Farmers Market. Graham Sait, a leading educator and international speaker on soil, animal and human health, is the ambassador for the festival, opening the festival at 9am. There will be workshops on soap and cheese making, seed saving, information stalls on solar energy, a CD swap, 2nd hand retro and vintage quality clothes, worm farming, and entertainment from local musicians. Learn how to make an earth wall, try some tai chi, or have a massage

and then interact with the MidCoast Water catchment model. A Fisheries touch tank and Waterwatch will also be there with bugs from the river, to get up close and personal with river life. Characters Whizzy the Waterdrop and Platypus Pete will also be making an appearance.

Further, a 60 minute Newcastle University Science Challenge will challenge competitors to build the most sustainable house and use water effectively, with a prize for the winning team!

Adopt a tree while you are at the festival to reduce your carbon footprint and be one of the first people through the festival to ensure your free sustainable shopping bag. Tim Silverwood from Take 3 will be launching Gloucester’s 'No Plastic Bag' campaign, and hosting a showing of the film ‘Bag it’ on the Friday night before the festival.

The Sustainability Festival is part of the Gloucester Glorious Garden Ramble incorporating outstanding gardens and sustainable homes and gardens on November 2 and 3. We hope to see you there!

athy, please describe your job and what’s involved with the role ...

I’m a Senior Travel Consultant with over 30 years’ experience – arranging holidays for the leisure market, trips for business travellers and arranging special interest group journeys.

Tell us a bit about the amazing Bauhinia Tree in Gloucester – where is it located, and what do you know about when and why it was planted?

The Bauhinia Tree was spotted at the Tugwood Winery, 450 Mograni Creek Road, on the outskirts of Gloucester. This tree prefers a subtropical, humid climate, but at Tugwood it is sheltered by a barn and seems to be hanging on despite the lack of rain in our region.

How has this beautiful tree inspired you to organise a trip to China in 2014?

This tree was discovered in the 1880s and widely planted in Hong Kong in the early 20th century, thus the name ‘Hong Kong Orchid’.

It became so identified with Hong Kong that it was selected as the peaceful emblem for Hong Kong's flag when the British returned the colony to China in 1997. On the flag, the flower is stylised as a 5-petal white design on a red background, while most flowers in nature are dark purple and have a lovely perfume.

Sue and Craig have been in business in the local area for over 25 years. They have made Taree Pet Barn BIGGER and BETTER, with the large range of marine, goldfish and tropical fish. hat’s the history behind the KinSPIRIT Iris and Daylily Farm – how long has it been in your family and operated as a flower farm? I always wanted to live on a farm. My husband, John, and I moved from Sydney to the magic of the Manning Valley in the spring of 2001. KinSPIRIT began.

I started my Horticulturist Certificate in 2003 and was trade certified by 2005. The business name, KinSPIRIT, was registered in 2002, but the first few years we were busy buying and growing Iris to create decent stock levels, so initially I was only selling minimally at local markets.

Describe the property for us – where exactly is it located, and how many acres do you have planted? The farm is located on The Bucketts Way between Krambach and Burrell Creek. The locals call our beautiful spot “the top of the Krambach cutting”, and most of our land is dedicated to nature and wildlife, as we only use about 3 acres for growing Iris, Daylilies and many other foliage and flowering trees and plants.

Where did the property’s name, KinSPIRIT, come from? The property name of KinSPIRIT was the paper name of a German Shepherd Dog we had in Sydney, who died too young to come to the country. I have always had a Shepherd or two my whole life. In Sydney, John and I bred G.S. dogs and we knew the female, Tara, we had would make it to the farm, but our male, Viper, did not. So, his paper name seemed an appropriate name for this magic mountain.

What types of flowers do you grow on the farm – and what was the rationale behind choosing these particular species? At KinSPIRIT we specialise in two species of frost hardy, evergreen Iris plants – Tall Bearded, which are drought tolerant, and Louisianas, which are water-loving.

We are primarily a mail order business, also selling Daylilies (Hemerocallis) which are edible and contain Vitamins A, C and minerals.

We also sell to landscapers and wholesale nurseries. Because I have always been a ‘plant freak’, we grow many different plants, enabling us to sell quality fresh cut seasonal flowers all year round.

How (and where) do you market your flowers to the public? Do you sell your stock as cut flowers, whole plants, or bulbs? I regularly attend Farmers Markets at Gloucester (2nd Saturday) and Nabiac (last Saturday each month), unless I have an annual event away from home. I also have a successful stall at the HUB market (3rd Saturday) at the Taree Showground.

Selling seasonal variations of bare-rooted and potted plants, besides Iris and Daylilies and Succulents, I often receive orders for other plants because of the cut flowers I am selling, such as Grevillea majestic.

We also have an outlet for our fresh flowers at the Farmers Patch in Lake Street, Forster, but the main focus is still the mail order business.

You’re holding a flower show in October. What date/times can people come to visit, and what activities do you have planned for the day? As the farm is not yet open to the public, except by strict appointment, we annually host the ACCENT ON IRIS FLOWER SHOW the third Saturday in October, which is the

19th in 2013, from 10am to 3pm at the BURRELL CREEK HALL on the Bucketts Way, in between Tinonee and Krambach.

The public are invited and encouraged to enter flowers and photography. The photography is judged by world-renowned, award winning cinematographer, artist Jim Frazier.

And although I am an Iris judge (Iris Society of Australia – N.S.W. region) horticulturist, florist, floraculturist and author Del Thomas judges the floral entries.

The show hosts a small number of specialty stalls, including of course KinSPIRIT and local Manning Valley Artist Louise Green.

I am a committee member and the Newsletter Editor for the Iris Society of Australia – N.S.W. region. The N.S.W. This annual event is usually a 2 day show, but this year the ISA-NSW is hosting a National Iris Conventionn, so the NSW Iris show is only one day in 2013, being Sat 26 October.

Animal Welfare League Victoria and Paige Schumann are foster carers for the local branch of the Animal Welfare League. The League is always on the lookout for people willing to devote some of their time to looking after surrendered dogs and cats, and Victoria and Paige say that becoming a carer is a heart-warming and rewarding experience … ell us a bit about yourselves – how long have you lived in the Manning-Great Lakes area, and what’s your day job? We ha havee both lived in the Manning-Great Lakes area since a young age and since leaving school, have both obtained jobs in Childcare. Paige has also recently begun assisting with teaching Puppy Preschool classes at Wingham and Valley Vet every Saturday morning.

Where did you first hear about the Animal Welfare League, and what can you tell us about the local arm of the organisation? We are unsure about when where and when we first heard about the Animal Welfare League. This branch of the Animal Welfare league is located in the Manning-Great Lakes area i.e. Forster, Tuncurry, Taree, Wingham, Old Bar etc. and aims to rehome surrendered domestic animals to suitable loving homes.

What made you decide you’d like to become involved as foster carers? After volunteering for over ten years to rescue and rehabilitate native animals, we decided that it would be beneficial to provide Paige’s newfound knowledge of behaviour and training to those who need it.

So, in practical terms – what does being a foster carer for the Animal Welfare League involve? What kinds of animals do you look after, and how long do they generally remain in your care?

What’s been the most rewarding thing for you about being a foster carer? We have enjoyed being able to socialise our dogs with many different breeds, and it’s always a heart-warming feeling when a previously surrendered dog finds a new loving home.

Why would you encourage other people to become carers? We personally think it is great for those who aren’t able to permanently care for an animal due to their financial circumstances. It’s also great to socialise kids and pets around the different kinds of breeds and sizes that come into care. The more carers, the more animals this organisation can help save and rehome.

How do people register their interest, and what’s the process involved with becoming a carer? Some of the requirements to become a foster carer include a secure yard, cats need to be kept inside at all times, and your own animals must be desexed and up to date with vaccinations … and of course, a loving home environment with lots of cuddles and TLC. How do I get started?

When starting out, you should plan a routine that is easy to follow and maintain. As the program becomes more routine, you can vary your exercise times and activities.

Choose an activity you enjoy. Exercising should be fun, not a chore. Schedule regular exercise into your daily routine. Add a variety of exercises so that you don’t get bored. Look into scheduled exercise classes at your local community centre.

Exercise does not have to put a strain on your wallet. Avoid buying expensive equipment or health club memberships unless you are certain you will use them regularly. Stick with it. If you exercise regularly, it will soon become part of your lifestyle.

Focus on Health with Dr Simon Holiday

On Grief & Loss Grief and loss are stresses which come to us all. Doctors regularly help people grappling with distressing changes. A young person with genital herpes may be dealing with their first incurable disease. They may feel their hopedfor future is lost and that they may never be able to have another partner. For others, dealing with a relationship break-down or being forced out from a job is traumatic. For those doctors who walk alongside them on this journey, it can be taxing too. A doctor may strive to be empathetic and to put themselves in their patient's shoes. Yet the doctor must try and maintain personal and professional boundaries so they can keep going on looking after all their next patients waiting to be seen. One of my colleagues recently confided in me how exhausting it had become being responsible for seven patients receiving terminal care.

Dr Elisabeth K端bler-Ross was a US psychiatrist who worked in hospices for the dying. She noticed that in one wing of her hospital all her dying patients seemed to be coping better.

She realised the cleaning lady in this wing had been listening to the patients and their families, supporting them through their loss.

Dr Ross wrote a book, On Death and Dying, where she described five stages in this grieving process: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance: an emotional roller-coaster.

However, there is no single way to grieve, so most people progress in twists and turns and can be at more than one emotional stage at the same time. For instance, someone may feel angry that they have cancer, yet others who do not live such a healthy life, do not. At the same time, they may be unable to believe it is really happening to them.

Loving relationships provide a sense of emotional security and safety. The death of a loved one may cause trauma and loneliness

and make people withdraw from their prev previous activities and relationships. The caregiver of the deceased may blame themselves and feel guilty that they are still alive while the significant other is gone. Over about 6 - 12 months, most people move through a natural mourning process. While the deceased is never forgotten, gradually the longing and sadness dwindle, relapsing at significant times such as birthdays or Christmas. Most people slowly learn to live again, to make plans and return to meaningful activities.

Almost one in ten bereaved people do not regain normal functioning in this time-frame. It may be the death was sudden or unexpected in nature, such as a suicide. It may be the death made them dwell on their own personal past traumas. Some try and cope by using drugs and alcohol or are left with persistent guilt and fears.

If you know someone like this, advise them to see a doctor in whom they can trust. They should not seek nerve or sleeping pills. These damage memory and our ability to learn to adapt to loss, as well as becoming habitforming. Anti-depressants on occasions may have a minor role. Their doctor will hopefully help them understand what is happening to them. Some techniques that assist may include a discussion of memories of the deceased, both the positive ones and the negative. The patient may be encouraged to tell the story of the death or even to write a letter to the deceased as if to express the things they never were able to say when the person was alive. Their doctor may help them try and come to a new understanding of their own life story. These treatments should help the bereaved person to find healing.

Don’t suffer in silence Mental Health Month in the spotlight Mental illness can affect people of all ages and from all walks of life. It’s natural to feel sad or moody sometimes and to feel the pressure of daily stresses. However occasionally the burdens don’t lift and the pressures seem overwhelming – and many people suffer in silence. With one in five Australian adults experiencing mental illness each year, it can have a profound impact on individuals, their families, friendships and workplaces.

Mayo Private offers the most comprehensive mental health service on the mid north coast of NSW. The Mental Health Unit specialises in treating people suffering from a range of anxiety-based and depressive disorders, including acute and chronic anxiety disorders, phobic disorders and extended grief reactions.

Participation in Mayo’s mental health programs is voluntary, and can involve a short stay in hospital or attending day programs. Once people are on the road to recovery, Mayo’s mental health team works through a comprehensive plan with clients so they can be confident support networks are in place to help them remain well in the community. Mayo Private links with many local organisations involved in mental health, employment services, sports and recreation, skills training, and creative outlets –

to help people stay involved in their community in a supported way.

New mental health facilities During Mayo Private’s $10 million upgrade in 2012, a new mental health wing opened with 20 inpatient beds – the majority being private, ensuite rooms. “We have friendly, professional staff providing care in a respectful, private and discrete environment,” says Paul. “Our inpatient and day programs include cognitive behavioural therapy, anger management, sleep management, mindfulness training, and dialectical behaviour therapy.”

25th Anniversary

Chrissy Jones had the pleasure of attending the festivities to join Kerry and Les Eakin to thank Diane ffor her 25 y years of loyal yal service to the local company.

iane’s day started as normal at the showroom, then a little twist with Kerry taking her to a salon for a little pampering, hair and makeup; Kerry had told Diane that she was to be given the treatments, and after a little luxury they would go for lunch before going back to work.

Diane was none the wiser and happily went along.

Imagine her surprise when she walked into Cooee BBQ Café and sitting around a table was husband Gary, who had kept the secret expertly, and her fellow employees.

A beautiful bunch of flowers and a 25 year silver medal were presented, a few formal speeches, and a lovely meal infused with friendly banter celebrated Diane’s milestone.

Many stories and the odd photo were passed around, evoking smiles and laughter around the table. Changing hair styles, fashion and shop locations, promotional days and happy times gave a healthy feeling of work/life balance for the entire team.

For Diane it has been a case of being a part of the family. She has seen the pool company grow from a shovel and truck small business, which was started back in the late ‘70s by Les and his father, to grow to the thriving business it is today.

From Diane: how did you come to work for Kerry and Les? A chance meeting between my husband and Les, who was looking for someone to work in the pool shop for them. One thing led to another, and here I am 25 years later.

We have a great customer base; a lot of them have been coming in to the shop for a number of years, and we are continually getting new customers through the door, so there is always something different every day. There is always something to learn, and I work with and for great people; this makes it easy to go to work every day.

What gives you job satisfaction? Helping people with their pools, whether they are having problems or just wanting to know that their pool is ready and safe for their family and friends to swim. Knowing that you are doing your best to help your customer have a pleasant experience when they are in our shop and giving them the benefit of my years of experience.

THOMAS DUTTON & JOSHUA EMERTON Most of the local children in the area would be familiar with Thomas Dutton and Joshua Emerton. They are the energetic characters who have applied their natural passion, dedication and education to creating a thriving before and after school and vacation care service in the Manning-Great Lakes: Manning Valley OOSH. Having had her children experience first hand their expertise, Jasmine McQuillan decided to delve a little deeper!

o Josh and Tom, you guys have been in business since 2008 ... Give us a run down on your career so far? How did you get to where you are now?

Josh: I am 29 years of age and born and bred in Taree. I attended Chatham Public School in my early years then progressed onto Chatham High School, where I developed my passion to move into the teaching profession after finishing my HSC. I was fortunate enough to receive a Sporting Scholarship for cricket at the University of New England and also gained automatic admission into a Bachelor of Education Primary degree. After 4 years of study, I graduated with my Bachelor of Education degree and began to step into the big teaching world. At the beginning of 2007 I commenced casual and temporary teaching in the Taree area, obtaining constant work within all the local schools.

At the conclusion of 2007, Tom Dutton and I began working as teachers at Chatham Public School and soon became the best of mates. We soon discussed the idea of commencing a Vacation Care program to commence in January 2008.

The service was an instant success, with the local community being in full support of the new program which assisted all working families with our stimulating and exciting programs. Following the commencement of our first centre, we then continued

What’s the key to your success?

Tom: I think there are a few different reasons for our popularity with children and families in the local area. Firstly, Josh and I throw 100% of our energy into the program and into the day’s activities; we would go home with nothing left in the tank each day! We let the children choose what they would like to do during the day.

We would offer several different organised activities during the day and if any of the children didn’t want to take part in an activity, that was okay.

Having an energetic staff who enjoy what they’re doing and can keep up with the kids is another key to our success. While it’s important to have a lot of fun we also have the children’s respect, as they know us as teachers.

What are your plans for the future?

Josh and Tom: We both plan to continually improve our local services, to challenge ourselves to keep the programs we offer exciting for the children and staff.

lthough Australia has countless fascinating locations and sights, we’ve precious few true icons: the Great Barrier Reef, of course; Ayers Rock-Uluru; Kakadu; Port Arthur; Margaret River among them ... and Broome, arguably the most remote destination of them all. Yet we travelled there last month in what seemed the blink of an eye, leaving Port Macquarie at 7am and crossing the continent to arrive in Broome at 6pm, in ample time for a dip and dinner, and to shrug off a cold-weather mindset and bask in Broome’s eternal summertime.

The pearling capital of Australia is a genuinely

unique destination with a history – and present day culture – that every Aussie should experience, yet such a lucky few do. It’s a 10,000km round trip, yet comfortably achieved on the forward journey in a day, overnight (3hrs 40mins from Perth to Sydney) on the return. If you fly the main leg in Business Class as we did, it’s a snack.

Not only is Broome itself a special locality, the town’s own iconic spot is Cable Beach, widely recognised for its images of camel trains strolling the sand, silhouetted against the horizon. And the icon within the icon is Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa, whose spectacular Sunset Bar right

The resort, spread over and mingled via winding pathways throughout acres of glorious exotic gardens (home to wallabies and cute desert lizards), was built by British visionary Lord Alistair McAlpine 35 years ago, when tourism was essentially unknown along the vast northwestern Kimberley coast. In tribute to the town’s heritage its architecture is a charming blend of Chinese influences with Outback corrugated iron. It sounds incongruous, but works perfectly – and in part is the reason a stay at Cable Beach Club is so relaxing: it is totally unlike anywhere else in the world. From work experience to school-based traineeships Year 10 students from high schools in the Manning have been engaged by Big W Taree for work experience as part of the Retail Industry Partnership Program.

Seven students from Chatham High School and St Clare’s High School were provided with an orientation to the Retail Industry

by Big W. They were then exposed to various department operations throughout the program where they worked as part of the team. Store department staff assisted the students throughout the program and offered mentoring and support.

Students attended their local store one day a week over the six week period. On conclusion, those students interested in casual work within the store were able to apply for available positions.

School-based traineeships may also be offered to those students who displayed the right attitude and skills during the program.

Assistant Store Manager Sally Hile said "Big W welcomed the opportunity to encourage the next generation of retail merchants to expand their knowledge and experience with us.

I believe we have both benefited from the opportunity and the fresh outlook, these willing students provided. I hope we have been able to encourage their thirst for retail, and look forward to continue this with the next applicants. Not only have we had a chance to expand their experience, but we have gained an opportunity to recruit some of these keen young adults. It is a win-win situation."

The aim of the Retail Industry Partnership Program is for local young people to participate in a flexible learning opportunity and gain access to career pathway information within the Retail Industry; specifically BIG W. The program provides opportunities for students and teachers to learn about current and emerging skills within the Retail Industry and the required qualifications for retail employment.

Future Ambition There is a 24% Indigenous unemployment rate on the Mid North Coast, vs. 7.6% for non-Indigenous*.

Future Ambition, in partnership with the Arthur Beetson Foundation, are aiming to reduce this gap and are calling on local employers to fill 31 Indigenous jobs in the 31 days of October.

We will work together with employers to run 'Day in the Life' courses at no cost to find the best Indigenous person for the job.

In addition, the Arthur Beetson Foundation, with their strong connection to Indigenous communities Australia wide, can provide great mentors to help the new recruits settle into their new jobs found via the 'Day in the Life' course.

Award Winning Pools Local pool business Essential Pools has been recognised for the outstanding achievements in creativity, innovation and design Excellence in pools and spas in the 2013 Swimming Pool and Spa (SPASA) Awards.

The prestigious SPASA Awards of Excellence are the pinnacle of the pool and spa industry awards calendar. Les Eakin, owner of the Local pool company Essential Pools recently returned from the awards held in August, with a couple of awards in hand.

Through this practical experience students can then make an informed decision when considering subject choices for their further education. The program allows students the opportunity to gain workplace exposure in the retail field, to understand what it feels like to be part of a working team and to better understand the employment opportunities offered by BIG W. Partnership arrangements such as this improve young people’s level of engagement with education and increase the retention rate of students through to Year 12 or equivalent. They assist to develop pathway opportunities through Vocational Education and Training; School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships, part time and full time employment. The program has been a major success with all seven students graduating and receiving a certificate for all their hard work.

OK guys: tell us a bit about yourselves ... where are you from and what roles do you each play in Well Creative?

Well Creative is made up of Chris Fagerstrom, Tim Clift and Aaron Cuneo. We are all designers and partners in the business.

How we came together is a fateful story of random events ...

Nine months after graduating from Design College and over 200 job applications later, Aaron's prospects of breaking into the industry looked bleak.

A random conversation between Aaron's flatmate and a gym acquaintance unearthed an opportunity to work with Tim, who was running his own studio in Surry Hills. He was flat out on a large advertising campaign for Nikon. With portfolio in hand, Aaron met Tim and we are still not sure whether his work was amazing or Tim was just really desperate, but after a lengthy late afternoon interview of about 3 minutes, Tim said, "Can you start right now?' Aaron, who was probably as desperate, was taken aback. "Well, I'm kind of in interview mode at the moment, but I can start tomorrow at 9?" So began a good working relationship and a good friendship.

Many years later, Aaron decided to spread his wings and worked as a freelance designer, and Tim moved on to an opportunity to work for international design agency 'Corlette'… but fate was not done with Aaron and Tim. On his third placement with a freelance agency, Aaron was randomly placed at 'Corlette' with Tim. The full-time job offer followed, and Aaron and Tim were working together again.

"It's like we have our own centre of gravity."

Aaron eventually left Corlette and worked at various other design and advertising agencies in Sydney, before making the move to Hannam Vale. "I had no idea that I would be able to keep doing what I loved but I really wanted to leave Sydney and live on the coast, so decided to roll the dice." It was not an easy move. There was some work from home which eventually dried up, and many months of unemployment followed. Once again in the doldrums, Aaron decided to go into the Job Find Centre to source work of any kind. Life for

Kylar Duffy, Lynn Duffy, Terry McDermott and Sally McRobert have been a part of the Relay for Life event in Forster for varying lengths of time. They all have their own personal experiences with cancer, but what brings them together is their desire to remember those they’ve lost, to heighten awareness, and raise money for cancer research. This year’s Relay will kick off on October 26 …

hat are your personal histories with cancer?

Kylar: I was only 4 years old when I did my first Relay.

My mum was on the committee. At that Relay I had a lot of fun and got to make my first candle bag for the candlelight ceremony in memory of my grandma, who had died from cancer. My mum still has that bag, and on it I wrote, “I hope you are having fun up above. I think you will come and read my message. Love Kylar”. Since then I’ve been in all of the Great Lakes Relays; this one will be my fifth one.

Lynn: My life changed dramatically when I lost my beautiful mum to cancer in 2001, a year after my daughter was born. She wanted to be remembered as a guiding light for her family and friends, so when the opportunity came to be part of the Relay, I couldn’t resist.

By volunteering for the Cancer Council I feel like I am doing what I can towards fighting back against a disease that touches us all in one way or another. One of my closest friends has also been through successful treatment for cancer, and I am thankful for each day of our friendship.

Terry: Sally is a Cancer survivor and got involved in the Relay about 10 years ago.

Being her husband, I went along to have a look, and the next thing got roped into being the MC … this is my third Relay. I have since become a community speaker for the NSW Cancer Council and recently was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer myself, so I have an even more important message to get out there to all of our male population.

Sally: Fifteen years ago I had my best friend (from school days) battle cancer for

When and where will the Relay for Life

Will there be any special guests or entertainment?

Sally: Dr Livshin, Oncologist at the Manning Rural Referral Hospital, will be our special guest to open the Relay, and during the day there will be continual entertainment by local artists.

How much money do you hope to raise this year?

Sally/Terry: We would love to exceed our last Relay total of $103,000 and with the community behind us, we should be able to do this. The money would be well spent on research to beat this dreadful disease, as well as help any sufferers in the area that are having hard times financially.

How can locals help support the Relay?

Terry: From a business perspective, the locals are great in donating to charities; however, they are doing it tough at present as well. The good thing about the Relay for Life from their perspective is they get something for their money in Advertising and Promotion and can put up signage or marquees etc. at the Relay to let the community at large know they support such a great cause.

Lynn: As individuals, the best way to support the Relay is to take part! Get a team together ahead of time, or come along with your family and friends on the day.
