K, own up - who made New Year’s resolutions and has already stopped, or haven’t even started? Well, don’t stress - I have the answer! You see, I don’t look at January as the start of the year; I look at it as the “get yourself organised month”.

Plan, even enjoy some more downtime, and then you’re all ready to go in Feb … Let’s face it; even if you have some time off over Christmas and head back to work in January, are you really working properly? With kids still on their holidays, there is no normality to how we get through the month of January; however when the first of February hits - bang, it’s back into routine and the year begins. School, work, gym routines, play dates with mumma groups, the list goes on and on ... and holidays are now a very distant memory. So, it’s OK if those resolutions didn’t quite happen; you can start now.

We meet the beautiful Talia Kendall, and she lets us in on her special day, as well as showcasing what our gorgeous region offers when it comes to planning and putting your day together. RHEMA FM has been broadcasting in the region since 1996. What impact do you believe it has in the community?

Our logo is, "Changing lives for good", and that's nothing we can do - it's something that God does, and many lives have been changed through this community radio station.

Over the years we have had many people who have contacted us to share their stories. We had one lady who said, "I want to let you know that RHEMA FM literally saved my life. I was on the verge of committing suicide and turned on RHEMA FM. I don't know what happened but I didn't go through with it, and now I listen to RHEMA FM all the time".

Dennis Burns from Taree also shared that many older people in his congregation who were near the end of their life would ask him to tune their radio to RHEMA FM 106.5. So for the last weeks of their life they have RHEMA FM going next to their bed 24/7, and I thought, that's such a privilege. I can't imagine people wanting to tune in to John Laws or Alan Jones in the last days of their life.

We've always said that this is God's ministry, it's not ours, and the things that God has done over the years through RHEMA FM has just been amazing.

i Jo. Thank you so much for speaking with FOCUS. I love your tagline, “Every dog has a story, every dog needs love, every personality is a piece of art”. What is it about dogs that speak to your heart?

Our dogs are our world, our family. I’ve always had at least one dog in my life, and they radiate unconditional love. No matter what is going on, our dogs will always be elated see us.

They bring so much joy, and yet their lives are so short compared to ours.

My passion is to encourage people to make dogs integral to our lives. I know from personal experience just how fulfilling life can be when we simply open our door to a dog.

Tell us a little about your story, Jo and your approach to photography. I also understand you’ve received some impressive accolades throughout your career.

Last year, I escaped Sydney with my husband, Neal and moved to our beautiful farm in the Wootton Valley with our three rescued dogs, Daisy, Luna and Harvey. Since then we now have a fourth dog, Henry, whom we saved from a local pound by offering to foster him and subsequently adopted him.

Having been a keen photographer from my early teens, in 2011 I got serious and found myself an excellent mentor, who taught me to embrace manual photography and around the same time fell into animal rescue photography, 6 Manning-Great Lakes focus

after finding a lost dog late one afternoon. I’ve spent the last eight years volunteering at two of Sydney’s major animal shelters, where I’ve spent almost every weekend photographing, editing, writing and posting on social media, to help homeless animals find rescue or adoption.

I’ve helped match thousands of animals to their forever families through photography and storytelling.

Animals have always held a special place in my heart, so it was a natural progression to move into pet photography, specialising in dog photography.

I’ve been fortunate to have had many amazing experiences, including travelling overseas to the South of France and also to New Zealand on Barka retreats, to photograph dogs in out-of-this-world locations with a group of dog photography peers from all over the world, being coached by three of the world’s best dog photographers. These experiences, along with my time volunteering for animal shelters and rescue organisations, have helped develop me into the photographer I am today (pardon the pun!)

I’m known as the down-to-earth dogloving photographer; partly because I don’t mind getting dirty to get the shot, but mostly because of my whole-hearted approach to dog photography. For me, it isn’t simply about posing a dog and taking a photo. It’s about capturing their personality, finding those little nuances that make them unique and telling their story.

I am an accredited professional member

of the Australian Institute for Professional Photographers and also a member of HeARTsSpeak, an international organisation uniting art and advocacy to increase the visibility of shelter animals.

You have just released a visual, photographic book full of inspiring images, with funds raised going to a very worthy cause. How did you find this process, and what are your hopes for the publication?

Paws for Thought Rescue (PFT) is an amazing teeny tiny rescue group in Sydney I’ve been creating fundraising calendars for since 2012.

I felt it was time I challenged myself through a more significant project, and that’s where the idea for the book came to life. Teeny Tiny Dogs and Their Stories is my first self-published fundraising coffee table book, and the project started early last year. The aim of the book is to raise awareness and funds for PFT, who save and rehabilitate teeny tiny, frail old dogs from Sydney and NSW country pounds.

I photographed 59 teeny tiny dogs for the book, and each dog has a double-page spread with their photos and their unique story. All up there are over 150 pages of adorable cuteness, but also be prepared to shed some tears.

The book and calendar projects have raised thousands of dollars for PFT. But even more than that, my deepest hope for this book is that it might encourage more people to adopt.

A rescued animal seems to truly appreciate their new life, having experienced the old one, and made it through to a second chance.

I know you’re passionate about giving

back through your work, and I also love the link on your website that states “Advocacy first, always”. There a number of animal welfare groups you have collaborated with over the years, including Paws For Thought Rescue, Sutherland Shire Council Animal Shelter and Greyhound Rescue, to name a few. Tell us about the extraordinary work these organisations do and how we can help?

I am a voice for animals who’ve been abandoned. Animal rescue groups save animals from pounds, shelters and other various situations and rehabilitate and prepare them for their forever homes. Some groups have their own accommodation, whereas others use foster carers, who take the animals into their own homes and integrate them into family life to prepare them for adoption.

I encourage everyone to consider adopting their next pet. I also encourage people to volunteer if possible.

What is your vision for the year ahead?

My vision is to create unforgettable photography experiences on our farm for dogs and the people who love them, as well as continue to photograph local pets waiting to be adopted, and also native fauna. I am in the initial stages of planning my next book!

Local carpenter Tim Bayer had a taste for adventure, and in 2018 threw caution to the wind, bought a one-way ticket to Vietnam and headed off with only his backpack on an adventure … and what an adventure it’s been so far. We caught up with Tim, who was home briefly over Christmas, about where he’s been so far, and what the highlights have been.

You also spent some time on an island in Cambodia?

Yes, I have been to an island called Koh Rong and various other islands close by about four times now. The most recent time spent there was when I volunteered for one month to assist the English owner by doing bar work, and making wood fired pizzas in the evening. It was great, because in return for volunteering, I got free accommodation, meals and drinks (a dream come true), staying only metres away from an idyllic “Coconut Beach” in my own bungalow. In fact, I am going back there to volunteer for about a month on this next trip I’m about to head off on.

What’s travelling taught you?

That you don’t need a lot of material possessions to be happy. I travel with my backpack which weighs 10 kg - that’s it …

I’ve learned not to take things too seriously

and just go with the flow. Nothing is really planned apart from my entry and exit dates - the rest is made up on the fly, and it has turned out to be an amazing way to travel.

The local people I’ve met in my travels have amazed me … they have so little in the way of material possessions, but they will more than happily invite you to a family dinner, give you a bed for the night, and try their best to communicate with travellers like me. It’s just been awesome to experience something like this.

One experience stands out for me - a mate and I went on a four day guided walk from Kalaw to Inle Lake in Myanmar, which took us through minority villages with absolutely no power, but they were more than happy to feed us, wanted to give us bamboo tattoos and share with us their locally made brew, “Dagon Red” (I didn’t get the bamboo tattoo, and the beer was not the best - ha ha).

Advice to other people thinking of backpacking through SE Asia?

Buy a backpack, fill it up and buy a ticket - the rest will come together … and if you really want to experience the culture, be spontaneous, don’t plan, just go with the flow.

W

hen did you first decide to get into the business of being on Airbnb?

We are your classic “empty nesters” who, over the years, made some large additions to our Taree West Federation style home to meet the needs of a growing family. A few years after the kids had left, we watched a program called The Minimalists and realised how much we had that we just didn’t use or need - in fact, the front part of our home was something we just walked through … We discussed selling and moving into a smaller home, but we really love where we are, as it’s just so centrally located.

So, we hatched a plan to utilise the parts of the house that we didn’t use and turn it into some sort of accommodation. Having travelled a lot, we knew what we liked and what we didn’t. So, with the help of our carpenter son, we added a second kitchen, repainted, and turned the front half into self-contained accommodation.

Tell us about your property.

Our home is in Taree West on a typical quarter acre block about 10 minutes’ stroll to the CBD. We live at the rear of the property, while the Airbnb utilises the main entry for access and takes up the front part of our home. It’s fully self-contained, air-conditioned, and very comfortable for a couple - we find the “homeliness” appeals to many travellers.

We also allow animals (as long as they’re well behaved). Guests can also check out our backyard egg factory (the chooks), and spoil our two already very spoiled cats - Stanley and Rosie.

We try REALLY hard to please our guests …

I really stress about the small things, and when it comes to providing a great accommodation venue, I think that really matters! We do things like providing enough in the fridge and cupboard for breakfasts, and even having a healthy instant dinner on hand for late arrivals. If it’s a hot day, we switch on the air conditioning, so they arrive to a cool space. Cleanliness is super important, and we work hard to keep the place spotless. We invest in good quality linen, and it really does make a difference! I believe being a Superhost comes down to thinking like a guest - what would you like to see and what would make your stay great - then DO IT! What do you like about this style of business?

Because we are both self-employed, it was the perfect business for us. We meet some amazing people AND get to supplement our income using our biggest investment (something not many people are able to do), and when we have family visiting or we are travelling, we simply block out the dates.

What are your tips for other locals who are considering this style of income?

I think the fact we are onsite makes a huge difference. There is no way that our home would be used for parties etc., and there is never any behaviour that would annoy our neighbours … In fact, most of them have no idea that we run an Airbnb.

Also, being a stickler for cleanliness and attention to detail is a huge benefit when it comes to being successful as an Airbnb host!

We always remember that even though we have hosted hundred of guests, and sometimes heading in to set up the rooms feels like Groundhog Day, this is a new experience for our guests and we welcome each group as though they are our first and treat them like they are the most important people in the world. We live in the house fulltime, so we are always here to greet them, show them around and tell them all we can about the area. I run the Visitor Centre, we have both been tour guides and have a wealth of local knowledge, which guests appreciate. We provide the studio with ingredients for a delicious breakfast of homemade and farm goodies, which is always commented on favourably. And we are very fussy about cleanliness and presentation.

What do you like about this style of business?

We meet delightful and interesting people from all over the world, hear their stories and learn as much about them as they do about us. We are self-employed and live onsite, so no commute. If we have other plans or need a break, we can simply block the calendar.

What are your tips for other locals who are considering this style of income?

Be there! Unfavourable experiences only seem to happen when the hosts are absent, and by making it clear that this is your home you avoid the “party house” syndrome and the lack of respect that I hear about on occasions from absentee hosts.

Keep it all within your own capabilities, don’t get carried away with being an entrepreneur! And, be respectful of cultures and background different from your own.

hen did you first decide to get into the business of being on Airbnb?

My desire to run a farm stay developed alongside my desire to farm - and, after having some wonderful experiences as a guest on other farms myself, I wanted to create a place where children and adults could come for a fun holiday whilst learning about farming and the impact they can make when they buy their food. I wanted to expand the impact that my little business could make, beyond just providing ethical and regeneratively-farmed meat to the local community - running a farm stay on Airbnb helps me to connect with more people, who will (hopefully!) go home and support small farms in their region.

Tell us about your property.

Our Airbnb cottage is on our 16 acre organicin-conversion ethical pig farm, tucked away in a tiny little village called Waitui (between Taree and Port Macquarie). Our property is the perfect mix of farm and forest, and there are some beautiful sights to explore in the forest around our farm. Guests can join in with farm activities, like feeding the pigs twice a day and collecting eggs from our ducks and chickens, and we will always offer a little bit of education (about pigs, or regenerative ag, or whatever our guests want to know) alongside the farming fun. The cottage is a cosy one bedroom cottage which can sleep up to five guests plus an infant.

What makes you a Superhost and getting great reviews consistently?

Our guests enjoy that we offer something beyond just a clean and comfy house. They love doing something different on their holiday, interacting with farm and farmer - we spend a lot of time answering guests' questions about

our animals and what we do here, and we love it as much as they do! We always make sure our guests are having a good time - left alone if they want to be left alone, or being involved in the farm chores if they want to. I reckon it's pretty rare to be able to pat pigs at most Airbnb places!

What do you like about this style of business?

It helps us to diversify our farm income and makes our business more secure, especially in tough times like the drought. I love seeing the joy on the faces of both kids and adults when they pat a pig for the first time. I love teaching kids and adults about rotational grazing, why pigs are actually clean animals even when they're covered in mud, what it means if their tail is curly or straight, and why we don't have pink pigs here! I love hearing people tell me they are never going to buy imported bacon again; better still, they are going to go home and find a local pastured pork farmer to buy from.

What are your tips for other locals who are considering this style of income?

Stay at a few different Airbnbs and find out what annoys you - like not having certain things in the kitchen, for example. Then make sure you provide those things for your guests!

Also, decide whether you want to accept one night bookings or not - then accept them anyway, in the beginning. I didn't love one night bookings, because I would be cleaning the same cottage six days in a row some weeks, which will quickly drive you crazy, but the one night bookings are a great way to build reviews until you become more established on the Airbnb site.

We stopped taking one night bookings after we had 40 or so reviews, a five star rating, and Superhost status; we haven't seen a big drop in bookings, but my workload is much less.

an you tell us how long Rainbow Bricks has been running for, about its history and how it originated?

Rainbow Bricks is returning to the MidCoast for our fifth annual MidCoast Brickfest, a LEGO fan event. The exhibitors are excited to be returning to this beautiful part of the world and for many of the exhibitors, this is one of their favourite events of the years.

Rainbow Bricks is an adult group of exhibitors which was formed in August 2013 and became an official LUG [LEGO User Group] in January 2014. The group was formed as we wanted a group that was interested in all the colours in the LEGO palette. Since forming, Rainbow Bricks has organised over 50 Brickfest events. Rainbow Brick is a not for profit group, with all the profits from the Brickfest events we run going to the charities the group supports.

Our exhibitors are all volunteers, who give up their time to build and create their amazing creations and collections, plus the time displaying at the Brickfest events.

What are some of the exhibits and modules on show this year?

The group has a wide range of exhibitors, ranging in age from their teens to their 60s and from many parts of NSW, most being from the Hunter Valley and Central Coast areas. We do

have a couple of exhibitors traveling up from the Southwest area of Sydney to display at MidCoast Brickfest. The students of Hallidays Point Public School will also have two tables of LEGO creations for the public to vote on.

The exhibitors come from far and wide.

Can you tell us a bit about these master builders?

Some of our master builders have been displaying for over 10 years, while for some other exhibitors this will be their first event.

Many of our exhibitors display as a family, with everyone in the family creating something for their display. The themes on exhibit range from Star Wars to LEGO Movie 2 and from the ‘80s through to some of the latest sets. Our always popular nine table Rainbow City layout features working trains, and lots of new buildings will be back.

What benefits do you think LEGO bring to the minds of young children?

Imagination plays a big part in the enjoyment of LEGO. Even when a child builds the set, it can still be played with in so many other ways. You can play with it as it was intended, or play with it in conjunction with other sets.

They can combine the sets into something bigger or more creative, and then of course you can take all those parts and create something totally new from scratch. LEGO can teach children and adults alike many other

Sarah Baker speaks with successful online children’s lifestyle boutique owner Holly Newton, as she launches her first retail space in Forster.

i Holly. Your eye for detail tells a cohesive story. Each collection has a distinct flow and connection.

Tell us about your highly successful brand, Darlings of August.

I started Darlings of August two years ago as my very own online brand and boutique.

As a Christian, it was important to me that I had a name which really encompassed the beauty and innocence of children. August is a synonym of majesty, and having a name which converted means “Darlings of Majesty”, I knew straight away that this was the right fit.

I was on maternity leave with my daughter and had only just moved to this stunning beachside suburb. Being at home every day with a little bub is wonderful, but as most mums can sympathise with, these days can be some of the longest we can experience (am I right!?) They leave you alone with your thoughts quite a lot of the time.

I’ve always been pretty creative, so with all of this extra “time” I decided I would start my own children’s line - one that could be treasured, loved and handed down from generation to generation. It was extremely important to me that I created this sustainable, heirloom type of quality for my customers. My first collection, Chapter One Hidden Treasures included pieces in the form of room decor and children’s clothing, tied together in a whimsical book that I wrote.

Each collection that continues to be released is a new chapter in the Darlings of August story. It is the story that lies within each book that is the heart of the brand.

Since then I have worked with some of the world’s biggest influencers and have had Darlings of August become a household name. Recently I was able to expand and

become a children’s boutique (along with my own pieces), featuring some of the best home grown and international brands.

Looking at this stunning children’s boutique in Forster, your creativity is clear to see; offering a beautiful insight into how a child’s room can look and feel. You are clearly passionate about children. Where do you draw your inspiration?

When I finished school in 2006, the only jobs I was interested in pursuing involved helping children. I studied social work for a year but upon reflection, knew that primary school teaching would be the best fit - a job where I could bring my creative flair and passion for helping children together in a setting where education, fun, independence, individuality, growth and safety could be fostered.

I have also always loved interior design and seem to always find myself losing track of time restyling my home or helping others with any styling queries they might have. In 2017, my husband, Dan and I welcomed our beautiful daughter, Vahli to the world, and

by June 2020 we will welcome another little male addition to the family. We couldn’t be more excited to continue growing our little tribe. Having my own little muses has really helped grow my love for styling both in the areas of children’s fashion and room decor.

I understand you are very particular about items stocked, with a conscious effort to use eco-friendly, recycled cotton and other fabrics. I also understand the material used in the children’s swimwear range is sourced from recycled plastic bottles. Why is this important for you as a retailer and a busy mum yourself?

to me that I curate brands that are ethically made, environmentally conscious and promote sustainability. We have an obligation as business owners, consumers and community members to encourage and participate in fair trade practices. As a busy mum and shop owner, I want to know that when I spend money on my little treasures that the products are not only eco-friendly, but will last the distance of time. INGREDIENTS For the base ½ cup walnuts ½ cup almonds 2 tbsp cacao powder 10 dates, pitted For the cheesecake (white layer) 2 cups cashews, soaked 2 tbsp vanilla extract

6 tbsp cocoa butter ½ cup coconut milk ¼ cup organic maple syrup ½ cup coconut oil Lemon juice For the cheesecake (pink layer) Same ingredients and method as white layer, but just add raspberries and blend.

METHOD 1. Soak the cashews in hot water for 1 hour.

2. Place the base ingredients into a blender and blend until the mixture is a soft consistency and no large pieces remain. You may have to stop the blender and scrape the ingredients from the sides, then blend again until you reach the desired consistency.

3. Set the base mix aside and rinse out the blender.

4. Place cheesecake ingredients into the blender and blend until smooth.

5. Grease a loaf tin with coconut or olive oil, then line all four sides with parchment paper.

6. Pour the base mixture into the loaf tin and level the mixture using the back of a spoon.

7. Pour the cheesecake mixture over the base and tap the tin for an even top layer.

8. Place the loaf tin in the freezer for 2 hours.

9. Remove the loaf tin from the freezer, turn out the cheesecake, and cut it into roughly 18 even squares (depending on the size and shape of your loaf tin).

10. Whip the coconut cream until light and fluffy, and pipe or spoon a little on to each cheesecake, then top each cheesecake with a strawberry.

FOOD I am running a bit late this month with a deadline upon me. I spent all day working in the café with food - baking, cleaning up and baking again. My grandmother always said that a good cook cleans up their mess. I am not sure they teach this at chef school, but it works for me. I get overwhelmed when I am surrounded by dirty dishes. I am overwhelmed by lots of things these days, and trying to stay a little organised keeps me sane in these crazy times.

After the recent rains, the countryside has quickly moved into recovery mode; plants, animals and insects are awakening from a semi dormant state to a wonderful, refreshing environment to be in again.

N

ow is a great time to start back on some garden maintenance; plants will respond well to some extra maintenance.

Small perennials and shrubs will need a general prune, cutting back into green, healthy wood. Remove any brown or damaged leaves, dead branches, and a light trim can be carried out where needed to stimulate healthy new growth. A top dressing of fertiliser and mulching around plants will promote new growth.

No doubt there will be plants that have succumbed to the dry spell, which is a great opportunity to plant something different.

Remove the dead plant and rejuvenate the patch with compost or manure, letting the soil fallow for a few weeks before planting.

The vegetable garden might need a bit of TLC as well. Remove and compost any remains of summer plantings; add a layer of compost or animal manure to a depth of 10 cm, forked in and mulched. This is then ready to plant with some fast summer growers or early autumn seedlings.

Soil recovery is critical after the long dry spell and fires. Soil microbes are essential for healthy plant growth and are found throughout your patch working with your plants. A liquid bio stimulant or vermicast will be beneficial to increase healthy soil microbe numbers.

Now is the time to start preparing for autumn planting. Planning early will help create a successful cool weather growing season. Starting seeds early will enable early harvesting of those fresh greens and prolongs

the season before plants bolt to flower in early spring.

If beds are unused, then they are perfect for the sowing of a cover crop or a green manure during the next two months. Lightly fork the soil, then simply broadcast a grain and legume seed mix into the area and rake in lightly, just covering the seed with soil. Eight weeks later, it can be dug in just before the flowering stage. A cover crop will help improve soil structure, increase organic matter and increase soil fertility.

Early vegetable sowings can be carried out by starting seeds in containers sheltered from heavy downpours and summer heat; a small greenhouse or a spot on the verandah with morning sun and afternoon shade is ideal.

Check daily that the seeds are kept moist; when planting seedlings, protect by covering with shade cloth or other similar materials until established.

The next few months there’s likely to be a hive of insect activity, so being observant is a key to plant pest management. Most insects are fairly harmless in small numbers, many species are also beneficial, but when numbers are high and plants are being attacked, there are a number of organic sprays to assist. ongratulations on your upcoming regional tour. You must be really excited.

Thank you. Yes, I’m touring regionally, so it's going to be great. I love getting out into those areas and seeing everyone and all of the people who have come to my shows before. It's always nice to go for long drives in regional parts of Australia. I really enjoy it.

You’ve been performing since the age of eight. Did you ever imagine that your career would span four decades in Australian entertainment?

I didn't ever think about it, really. You’re always in the moment of where you are, and you don't really think that far ahead. I guess I’m not surprised, because I’ve grown up in a show business family and my mum has been performing since she was a little kid and is still making records now at 85 years of age. It's just in my genes, and I’m very lucky.

Your current tour, A Farewell to Doris Day is a nostalgic celebration of a woman's remarkable life. What is it about Doris that inspired you to perform her life's work on stage?

I love Doris and have always loved her since I was about eight and saw her on Calamity Jane - Saturday afternoon movies. I just fell in love with her spirit and her voice and her beautiful face and her comedic skills. She was funny, she was a beautiful singer, she could dance so well, was a great actor and all of

those things, but I think above all of that it so well written, that everyone knows and was her spirit I connected with. The other one would be going on the Howard Stern Show in New York with my mum, which was quite a few years ago - about 20 years ago, actually; I just love Howard Stern, so that was a huge highlight for me.

What does 2020 hold for you?

I'm releasing a new album, which is an album for women and the people who love them. I’m launching a new record label as well, which is all about me taking my power back and doing things the way I want to do them. My aim is more freedom and authenticity from me; we tend to do that in our late 40s.

SCOTTY MAKES STUFF

Initially working out of his home in Taree, self-confessed “chronic inventor” Scott (Scotty) McPherson has built his startup business “Scotty Makes Stuff ” into something that outgrew his home, and it has become a very successful venture. Scotty shared his story with us, and it’s nothing short of inspirational!

H

i Scotty - thanks for your time. How long have you been living in the Manning-Great Lakes area?

I grew up in Taree and then moved to Sydney for uni and work. After 22 years there, I came back to Taree to be closer to my family and have been back here for seven years now.

Tell us about your startup business venture, Scotty Makes Stuff - which, by the way, is an awesome business name, and it’s fairly obvious that you make stuff!

What exactly do you make, and how did it all come about?

As you can imagine, that’s not an uncommon question, but the answer takes a few turns to get there. Around three years ago, I had been working on a kick-starter campaign with a good friend. Differences of opinion on the direction of the project stymied the campaign, such that we decided to sadly call it quits. It was a great product, and I do hope to get back to it one day soon. The industrial design work I did for the project gave me the confidence to get back into product design after being away for over 15 years.

I started small by designing products and sharing them for free on 3D model websites, where people with 3D printers would download my designs and print them on their home 3D printers. And that’s where the name “Scotty Makes Stuff” came from. I think I maybe spent a minute or two thinking about the name, but for better or worse, it’s stayed with me.

After a while, my free designs became so popular, that I had people without 3D printers asking me to build and sell my designs to them. In the space of just a few months, this grew into a full-time business, and my single 3D printer had grown into five printers in the back bedroom that were working 24/7 to keep up with demand. A few months after that, I

increased my printers to 25, and in 2018 when I’d finally monopolised six rooms in our house, I decided to move into commercial premises in Taree. I now have 80 printers with eight staff.

The design that really kicked it all off was a video camera stabiliser that used a mechanical “McPherson Strut” arrangement to smooth out the vertical bumps from the footsteps when people walk while taking a video.

This stabiliser is what most of our products are based around, and we now have many stabilisers available for use with cameras such as the tiny GoPros, all the way up to professional camera rigs.

I understand that you export approximately 95% of your goods offshore. What would you say the key hurdles were in getting set up to export?

For my business, there’s no “magic sauce” on how I started exporting. It was really quite easy.

I promote my products on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram, and this naturally brings a worldwide audience to my website.

It helped that I was already well versed in marketing, as my previous two roles were as a Marketing Manager and Head of Marketing.

Although I find the video production side a painful part of my job, the videos we produce always ramp up sales. It also helps that we’re bypassing the traditional distributor/retail outlets in the supply chain and exporting directly to the customer (manufacturer to Ccustomer). Removing the typical markup of these middlemen allows our products to be priced competitively in the marketplace against goods manufactured in the tens of thousands.

The biggest issue we have is our geographic isolation, which means shipping takes much longer and costs are much more than what North American and European customers are used to paying. The next big step for us will be using centralised US and European distribution centres to cut down on shipping costs and times.

With a background in industrial design and marketing, was the business an easy transition for you?

Absolutely; the new business felt as comfortable to get up and running as slipping on an old pair of tracky-dacks. But the downside of being able to do it all has meant that my workload had become even heavier, and I’ve often felt like the old “one-manband” straining under the load.

I’ve been very lucky to have some great staff working for me, and they’ve really stepped up over time. This has allowed me to focus more on the side of the business that directly relates to increasing turnover - new product development, video promotions and marketing. Thanks to them, I can already envisage a time this year when I’m not so “hands-on” with operations. I may even be able to take a holiday!

How do you spend your downtime (do you have any)?

Being a start-up, it’s hard to find time to switch off, but thanks to my wonderful staff I’m slowly but surely finding more time freeing up. I was a keen bushwalker, paddler and mountain biker until a touch footy injury stopped all that a few years ago. I always found these activities were great for recharging my mental batteries and more often than not, I’d also come up with a great design idea during the quiet times when my mind was most still. I plan to have a knee reconstruction this year, so hopefully it will give me the mobility to get back to the things I love.

Vision for the future?

Oh, dear, my answer could fill all these pages, but I’ll try to give you just the broad strokes.

My short to medium-term goals are to grow the business and staff to a level that can be self-sustainable. We have some exciting new products that are in the pipeline over this coming year, so we expect to see some significant leaps and bounds coming up for the

business.

As for the long term, I have some big ideas waiting in the background. For one, there are 3D printed and potentially fire-resistant homes.

But that needs a lot of time and money to get into seriously, so I imagine it’s a number of years down the track.

Very broadly, I call what we’re doing “micro manufacturing”, and I firmly believe this will be the future of manufacturing in Australia and many other countries. We don’t have the tooling overheads that those big manufacturers in China have, so we can be far more responsive to market demands. As 3D printers become more sophisticated, we’ll see the traditional manufacturing powerhouses diminish, as locally made products with smaller ecological product footprints will become more and more common. This will democratise manufacturing, so that once again Australia will no longer be reliant on such large volumes of imports.

The other huge benefit that we’ll see from 3D printing is mass personalisation. For example, our feet are often slightly different sizes, with one shoe being slightly tighter than the other. Most of us also have one leg longer than the other.

Imagine shoes that fit both feet differently, but perfectly, and also raise the footbed on one shoe up 4.6 mm to match your longer leg. Having a perfectly balanced stride may not sound like such a significant example, but consider the long term health benefits, such as reduced hip and knee issues in later life. With 3D printing, the cost to make customised products can be virtually the same as if they were all made identically, as in mass production.

irstly, congratulations on your very recent wedding. Take us back to where it all began ... How did you two meet?

Shayne and I first met when I was 16.

He was friends with my sister and her group of friends. We lost touch over the years, and I had a daughter in a relationship that broke down in early 2018. By the end of 2018, Shayne had found me on Instagram and we became friends and began talking and getting to know one another again.

We decided to catch up in January 2019 and shortly after that, I introduced Shayne to my family; he instantly hit it off with my mum and dad, and my two year old daughter very quickly loved Shayne as much as I did.

We were inseparable and would talk about spending the rest of our lives together; we both have a great love for fishing and camping and packing up and going on BBQ dinner trips.

We got engaged on the 25th June 2019 and set our date for the 30th November 2019; we had a short five months to organise everything.

What was the overall theme of your wedding?

We chose a theme of rustic, but also modern and elegant. I planned our big day, and with Shayne we worked together to create everything we ever wanted for our big day. Shayne and a few family members built all the dining tables for our reception, along with also building seats for the lawn and our bar, which all looked 32 Manning-Great Lakes focus

amazing on the day. We also recycled an old fridge and painted it in chalkboard paint and had all our wedding guests sign it. I did the buying of all our decorations and tableware and sourced the best options for flowers, which can prove to be one of the more expensive items needed for a wedding, so I ordered them through Valley Fresh Wholesale in Newcastle and made my own bouquets for my four bridesmaids, my two flower girls, the three button holes, my bridal bouquet and my toss bouquet, the two pieces for my circle arbour, as well as the flowers for the vases in the reception.

Take us through your wedding day; did it go fast, or did you get to enjoy and savour every moment?

The morning of our big day very quickly was upon us, and the five months of planning all came together perfectly. We held our whole wedding at Mansfield on the Manning and stayed in the accommodation the night before the wedding with all our wedding party. I had a great morning, enjoying breakfast with my girls and having our hair and makeup done in our cottage.

The nerves settled in as the time became closer, and our photographer arrived to capture us getting ready; 3:30pm arrived, and we made our way down to the ceremony, where I stood before the love of my life and before I knew it, we were married and the celebrations began. We went around the property of Mansfield on the Manning and captured all our wedding photos; we made it back to the barn for our reception, right before a huge rain storm hit! and started off the reception; we then grabbed our first drinks of the evening and had dinner served to us. The rain cleared at the perfect time, and guests were free to roam and relax as they wished. We had our speeches and were heading out to have our first dance, which was the highlight of our day, as there was a storm rolling in from behind us - and Jase was able to capture a stunning shot of the dance floor and lightning behind us, while we danced in the rain under our festoon lighting. We finished the night off with our wedding cake and drinks and said our farewells to all our guests.

It was truly a day never to be forgotten, and all our DIY and hard work paid off perfectly.

Tell us about the location of your ceremony why is this place special to you both?

We chose Mansfield on the Manning, because we wanted an outdoor wedding on the water and to be close to home for all our friends and family to enjoy with us, and Mansfield is just perfect if that’s what you’re looking for. Owner Jane is so easy to work with and allows your dreams to be a reality.

Did you find it easy to source everything you needed for your wedding locally?

At first I was finding it so hard to work out exactly what I wanted and how I wanted our big day to look, and hiring items to do a whole

wedding honestly can be so expensive and never exactly what you want! This is why I purchased everything I wanted online, mostly from Etsy, which is people from all over who make and sell almost anything; it was my saving grace for all my wedding stationery and wedding gifts for guests and our bridal party. I also looked around for ways to DIY, which helped us save money on a lot of items and was so much more fun. There is not one thing we would change about our big day.

Did you have a honeymoon? If so, where and how was it?

We departed Sydney on the Monday after the wedding and went to Cairns for our honeymoon, which we found to be an absolutely amazing part of Australia we had never seen. We had no idea just how humid it was going to be and that there really is no place to swim right off the beach at Cairns. It was not what we expected, but it truly was the most amazing destination and we would recommend everyone to go some day.

The Great Barrier Reef is so incredibly beautiful to see, and to be able to swim with turtles in the wild and see so many different fish and coral is just breathtaking. We were in walking distance to everything we needed for the entire trip and can not wait to go back for an anniversary.

FUNGUS gourmet We chat to Stu and Adele Hartley about the business of growing mushrooms.

S

tu and Adele Hartley are the proud owners of Mother Fungus Gourmet Mushrooms.

They operate from their property in Old Bar and have been selling their mushrooms at farmers’ markets and a number of local restaurants since April 2019. They moved back from WA to NSW in 2014 to be closer to family and as luck would have it, they purchased a twenty acre property at Old Bar. Stu’s mum grew up in Tinonee, so Stu knew the area well.

They did twelve months of various jobs, whilst planning ways to improve their property and create an income stream from it.

Permaculture was their original idea and while Adele focused on her school teaching, Stu was busy improving the property and growing mushrooms as a hobby. They loved the mushrooms so much, that they decided to take this hobby to the next level. With a massive amount of help from their friends, they built a shed and cool-rooms to start their gourmet mushroom business. The rest is history.

You specialise in gourmet mushrooms. Can you tell us about the varieties you grow?

We mainly grow oyster mushrooms, which come in a number of varieties, including king brown, pink, white, yellow, grey and pearl.

Oyster mushrooms grow in the wild on fallen logs and decomposing wood. We mimic this by growing them on organic cane straw and locally sourced hardwood sawdust.

We specialise in the winter varieties of king, white and grey, which we believe have a better flavour and longer shelf life. We are also trialling shitakes, lion’s mane (medicinal mushroom) and pioppino an Italian style brown mushroom.

Do mushrooms have any special nutritional or medicinal value?

Where do we start; mushrooms are just generally amazing.They contain high protein, low fat and a number of B group vitamins.

They also contain bioactive polysaccharides such as beta-glucans, which have been shown to have anti-tumour effects, as well as boosting the immune system. Oyster mushrooms can also lower cholesterol, since they contain a compound called statins.

On top of all that, eating mushrooms three times per week has been shown to reduce cognitive degeneration as we age.

What area and or climate are best suited for mushrooms?

Mushrooms grow in all temperatures, from almost freezing up to thirty degrees. They would normally appear in the wild after an autumn rain storm. We grow the winter variety in a coolroom at around fifteen degrees and 90% humidity. Our mushrooms actually need light, so our lighting is automated for a twelve hour on, twelve hour off daily cycle.

Has the recent drought affected your ability to produce?

We try to run our business as low impact to the environment as possible. We use tank water collected from our house and sheds. As there are no chemicals used, the water can be pumped back onto our paddocks.

How long does it take for mushrooms to mature and be ready for eating?

Most varieties take around one month.

Once the straw or sawdust logs have been inoculated with mushroom spawn, they go into in the incubation cool-room at a temperature of twenty-two degrees for two weeks. Then they’re moved to the fruiting room. Once they start to fruit, the mushrooms

double in size every day. Fruiting runs for around four days.

What dishes are your mushrooms best suited for?

Oyster mushrooms are incredibly versatile.

They’re great just fried in the pan with some butter, salt and pepper, but where they really shine is when they are cooked in with some sauce. They have a beautiful silky mouth feel and an amazing texture. They can be slow cooked for hours and not fall apart, so we love using them in pasta sauces, green chicken curries, risotto, mushroom gravy and they’re also great on a pizza.

How easy is it to grow mushrooms in our own homes, and what are the best varieties?

I’d love to say that growing mushrooms is easy and everyone should try it, and while it can be fairly easily done at home, results will vary. Oyster mushrooms are one of the easiest varieties to grow and if you pick seasonal ones, they should grow pretty well in a shaded place out of the wind.

We need to create an environment just like after an autumn rain storm in our coolrooms - high humidity, cold temperatures (around thirteen to sixteen degrees) and lots of fresh air. They also need twelve hour light/dark cycle.

Trying to balance all these things at once when the temperature is thirty plus outside makes it quite challenging.

Is all your produce organic and sustainable?

We have an ethos based around permaculture and regenerative agriculture principles. To this end, we are trying to grow our mushrooms in an advanced controlled system, but with as little impact on the environment as possible. We have a 5 Kw

solar system that offsets a lot of our power usage; we use mostly tank water, with both our house and sheds having water tanks. We use steam sterilisation and hydrated lime for cold pasteurisation. All the water used in the operation can be pumped straight back on to our trees and garden beds.

For mushroom substrate we use organic cane straw or hardwood sawdust from our local sawmill. Once the substrate has been mostly broken down by the mushrooms, it is turned into compost or used as mulch around our property.

So while we don’t claim organic status, we are doing everything we can to work to organic and sustainable principles.

Death Tax by Another Name I am frequently asked about death tax and if it still applies, and the answer is no. However, we still have death duty by another name, where superannuation or superannuation pensions are involved.

eath benefit tax applies at the rate of 15% plus applicable Medicare levy, on the concessional component of superannuation that passes to a non-financial dependent on death of the superannuant or annuitant.

The tax also applies to a pension or an annuity that was established with money rolled from a superannuation fund.

What is a concessional component?

Superannuation is made up of concessional (taxable) and non-concessional (tax free) components.

The taxable amount is made up of anything that was taxed at the concessional rate of 15%, such as employer contributions, tax deductible personal contributions or the fund earnings.

Importantly, it also includes any life insurance proceeds held within superannuation that passes to a non-financial dependent on death.

Dependency may extend beyond these two examples, but a spouse or minor child are the most common and indisputable financial dependent, that is not liable to death benefit tax on receipt of superannuation payments from a deceased member.

What are the practical considerations in estate planning to avoid or minimise this tax?

For retirees who have an allocated or accountbased pension, I encourage that you enquire with your fund provider or financial planner, to determine how much of the proceeds are taxable.

If there is a spouse who is to inherit the proceeds, however, then the issue of tax may not arise until the death of the beneficiary spouse.

There is also a benefit with pre- 1/1/2015 pension funds, when the means tested fee for aged care is determined and the income assessment for age pension.

The future cost of death benefit tax on an estate should be weighed up against those benefits.

Death benefit tax can be avoided if the account is closed prior to death.

A case in point is a person who was terminally ill or whose age and deteriorating health becomes obvious. Closing the pension fund or superannuation ought to be a consideration in those circumstances.

This also applies when there is life cover attached to a superannuation fund.

Generally, there is the capacity for a life company to pay a terminal benefit, prior to actual death, where it is established that due to the nature of the medical condition, death is expected within 12 months.

By making application for the terminal benefit, the proceeds are first paid to the superannuation fund.

That enables the member of the fund or their appointee under Power of Attorney, to make application to the superannuation fund trustees for release of proceeds of superannuation prior to their death, thus avoiding the death benefit tax that might otherwise arise when the intended beneficiaries are not financially dependent.

The value of an ongoing relationship with a financial planner or accountant, where an annual conversation and review takes place, should cover a review of circumstances and appropriate action to address issues such as the potential for death benefit tax.

DELIVERING FOR THE BUSHFIRES

Federal funding grants of $1-million have been to MidCoast Council, Port Macquarie-Hastings Council and Kempsey Council on the Mid-North Coast as part of the Natural Disaster Category “C” declaration to further support the bushfire recovery.

Since the Prime Minister’s visit to the region late last year when the bushfires across the region were at their worst, a significant recovery effort had begun with ongoing announcements of support from local, state and federal government, along with support from nongovernment organisations.

I have spoken to a significant number of people in our community affected by the bushfires since September and I have been continuing to advocate across all levels of government, and even with the insurance companies, to ensure we continue to secure as much support to help us get back on our feet.

At the time of the fires, the Prime Minister announced the Australian Defence Force would provide logistical and other assistance to the firefighting operations and offered further support to the Premier.

Within days after the Prime Minister’s visit I was pleased he announced a direct financial support package for households and businesses impacted by the fires and since that time I understand there have been a significant number of payments processed from across our region.

All funds will be drawn from the $2 billion allocated to the National Bushfire Recovery Agency and this is in addition to funding that is automatically available to councils through other disaster recovery arrangements.

Councils will be able to spend their $1 million payments on projects and activities that they deem essential for the recovery and renewal of their communities.

A further $18 million will be set aside to provide additional support to larger council areas which have experienced the most significant damage, with the National Bushfire Recovery Coordinator Andrew Colvin working with state governments and impacted local councils on determining this additional allocation.

FORSTER TUNCURRY RSL Ex-service and community organisations, veteran groups and private organisations play a crucial role in supporting the health and welfare of the veteran community. Congratulations Forster-Tuncurry RSL Sub-Branch on securing $4,102 in Federal funding to continue to support our veterans.

This payment is on top of the jointly funded Disaster Recovery Allowance which includes access to 13 weeks of income support payments to help those who have lost their business or work get back on their feet.

Applicants can call DHS on 180 22 66, visit www.humanservices.gov.au or visit a DHS Service Centre.

Volunteer firefighters will also receive financial support from the Federal Coalition Government for loss of income, where they have been called out for extended periods of service.

Rural Fire Service Volunteers in NSW who are selfemployed or work for small and medium businesses, and who have been called out for more than 10 days this fire season, will be able to apply for the payments.

The payments will provide for lost income of up to $300 per day up to a total of up to $6,000 per person.

Farm, fish and forestry businesses in fire-affected regions will get the help they need to rebuild with an initial $100 million in emergency bushfire funding providing grants of up to $75,000.

The path to recovery over the next two years would include 60 more rural financial counsellors and support workers, with an injection of $15 million in additional funding to the Rural Financial Counselling Service (RFCS).

An initial $76 million has also been announced to fund free counselling sessions, extra Medicare and tele-health consultations, an expansion of headspace services for young Australians, and community recovery initiatives.

There are also a range of environmental measures including $50 million as an initial contribution to protecting our wildlife and restoring the habitat.

TWIN TOWNS TENNIS CLUB

This funding will help our local centres to cover their day-to-day costs, offer transport assistance to isolated families and create additional places, ensuring families in the Manning Valley could access child care services.

The Twin Towns Tennis Club – Tuncurry has secured $14,700 in Federal funding towards the resurfacing of tennis courts at a cost of $49,700. Well done to everyone involved with the application.

MidCoast Council provides us with an update on our local water supply, future plans, and how we can help conserve water in our homes and businesses.

A

t the time of print, the local area is currently on water restrictions.

What does this actually mean, and what is our current situation?

The situation can change rapidly if rainfall occurs in the catchment, so we recommend you keep an eye on our web page at midcoast.nsw.gov.au/waterrestrictions to check the current level applicable to your residence. There are fact sheets available on our website which provide a lot of detail on the restrictions.

During the summer in the Manning/ Great Lakes we experienced severe water shortages due to the prolonged drought.

The water that supplies this area is drawn from the Manning River, and stored in Bootawa Dam, and extracted from an underground water source in Nabiac. Over the last few months we have undertaken a number of modifications to increase the amount of water we are able to extract from the Nabiac borefield. This has reduced the demand on Bootawa Dam. New production bores are being drilled now, with a plan to increase the supply from Nabiac to 13 - 14 million litres per day by the end of February. Rain in January in the catchment has eased the situation, and allowed Bootawa Dam to be replenished.

The new capacity from Nabiac will continue to supplement our water supply.

Future rainfall remains uncertain - and it’s too early to call off restrictions just yet.

It takes some time for river flows after drought to be clean enough to use for drinking water - and there will need to be further good rainfall events before we can refill the Bootawa water storage.

We thank all our residents for their efforts to reduce water use during the highest level restrictions we have ever experienced in our region.

RECYCLING RIGHT ON THE

MIDCOAST Here on the MidCoast we think recycling is a good thing to do, WITH OVER 70% OF LOCAL HOUSEHOLDERS REGULARLY RECYCLING through their yellow-lidded kerbside bins.

ur recycling habits see 1,800 tonnes of paper, 265 tonnes of plastic and 2,700 tonnes of glass recycled in our region every year.

But even the most avid recyclers can sometimes send the wrong things off for recycling, meaning all your good-intentioned efforts are wasted. Research shows there are some common themes when it comes to contaminating recyclables.

Keep your items loose. You’ve done the hard yards and sorted your recyclables, but don’t fall into the trap of putting them inside a bag or box before placing them in the yellow bin.

Machinery can’t open and empty the contents, which means all the items you sorted for recycling end up in landfill.

No soft plastics. The trouble with plastic bags, chip packets, bread bags, cling film and other soft plastics is that they’re so light they usually end up in the paper-stream - and even the smallest amount of plastic can ruin the

whole lot. Soft plastic belongs in your redlidded bin, or look out for REDcycle bins at participating supermarkets.

The drought, coupled with the recent bushfires, has meant that there are people out there doing it really tough at the moment. Our club is ready to lend a hand wherever we can.

Tell us a bit about the history of Wingham Rotary and other projects they have contributed and helped towards.

The Rotary Club of Wingham was chartered on 24th January, 1945. It was sponsored by Taree Club and began with 19 members. The club has a proud history in the town and is now the only remaining service club in Wingham.

Over the years the club has undertaken numerous local, national and international projects to help others. Rotary’s motto, “Service Above Self” has always been in the forefront of our club’s intentions. Just some of the local organisations that have been helped by our club includes Wingham Hospital and Hydrotherapy Pool, Dundaloo Hostels, Wingham ,Wingham Court and local schools. As well, numerous projects have been carried out in Wingham Central Park. The club has always supported international Rotary programs such as Youth Exchange, Group Study, Rotary Australia World Community Service projects and Polio Plus.

Would Rotary welcome new members?

Most definitely. All clubs are eager to increase their membership. Wingham club meets formally on the first and third Tuesday of each month, and informally on alternate Tuesdays. We meet at Wingham Services Club at 6pm for 6:30pm. We currently have 22 enthusiastic members and are most grateful for the assistance and support given to us by the Wingham people.

If you tend to zone out when people talk about property zoning, you’re not alone. But given zoning regulates what you can and can’t do on your land, it’s important as a property owner to have a basic understanding of the controls in place in your neighbourhood.

Z

ones within our region determine what types of development and activities can take place in what areas, and set out criteria within each area, such as lot size, building type, and height. While some people consider them a regulatory barrier, a closer look shows they make good common sense.

The process starts by identifying geographic pockets and labelling them according to what they are either currently used for, what potential they offer to meet the needs of our people, visitors and businesses in the future, or in some cases where land is not yet developed, an appropriate future land use.

Zoning helps protect our environment, preventing over-development in areas that support native vegetation, wildlife habitat, agriculture, and waterways. It also improves liveability and amenity by locating similar types of land use together, in turn ensuring services and facilities can be delivered effectively. For example, houses within

residential zones benefit from common services like power and garbage collections, local shops and childcare centres. And grouping retail shops together provides for shopper convenience, and supports delivery of services like public transport, street bins and parking.

Effective zoning also avoids mixing incompatible land uses, like a preschool next door to a pub, and maintains local character by ensuring consistency of building structures.

In the MidCoast region, three different zoning frameworks remain in place, a legacy of the three former local government areas.

Proposed changes to the zones applied across the region are currently being considered, which is the first step in developing a consistent and contemporary approach to local planning.

Let’s talk about hearing loss Losing the ability to hear is more common than people think and is a frightening situation.

It can also be hard to acknowledge your hearing loss as the onset can be gradual, or perhaps you may not wish to admit to family and friends that you are struggling. Research suggests people wait an average of ten years before seeking medical help for their hearing issues.

While it might seem easier to deny the deterioration of your hearing, when it comes to hearing loss, the sooner you can get treatment, the higher your chances of maintaining a reasonable level of audible recognition. There are some tell-tale signs that point to the problem; these may be more obvious to friends and family than the person with the hearing problem.

Some of the signs others may notice include: asking you to repeat yourself, not hearing the doorbell or phone ring, listening to the radio or television at high volumes, not hearing when being called from another room, thinking people are mumbling and not joining in conversations in social situations or group settings.

If you or your loved one are showing signs of hearing loss, don’t put it off. Speak to your doctor about organising a hearing test, or call a local hearing clinic such as Hearing Australia.

An initial hearing test runs for around twenty minutes - all you have to do is press a button each time you hear a sound.

If you are feeling nervous, ask your spouse or friend to book in a hearing test too and support one another.

The Good News is Gum Disease can be Treated!

Treatment for gum disease depends on the severity of the case. Visiting your dentist and having a full periodontal chart and X-rays, with your dentist, oral health therapist or your hygienist is a great way to assess your current periodontal health.

For years it was thought that bacteria linked gum disease to other disease in the body.

Current research now demonstrates that inflammation may be responsible for the association. Therefore, treating gum disease and the inflammation will not only help manage periodontal diseases, but may also help with the management of other chronic inflammatory conditions.

ow did you come to be a resident at Evermore?

I had just sold my house on the Central Coast, and I was looking for a change. I decided to visit my cousin living in Forster and brought my little dog, Skippy with me. I was considering where I would next settle, when my cousin suggested I go and take a look at Evermore, just to see what it was like. My first visit impressed me so much, I wanted to move in.

It was 2017, and I bought an apartment and lived there for two really happy years.

As it turned out, I was invited to take a trip around Australia with my brother, so I put my apartment up for sale, and it was snapped up. Unfortunately I broke my leg, so I reached back out to the management at Evermore and asked if they could sort something out for me, and they took care of it all for me.

It was great to catch up with all the great people, and it really made me feel at home.

Now, I just love it. I couldn’t find a better place to live. All my friends are here. There’s support if you ever need it, and I love the garden here. It gives me a lot of pleasure.

That’s why I’m so happy now. I couldn’t be happier. It’s my family. I’ve got no one else locally. I’ve got a son in Newcastle and brothers in Sydney.

What caught your attention when you first visited Evermore?

I remember when I first walked into the foyer at Evermore; I honestly felt like I was stepping into a five star hotel. It just opened my heart. It just feels quality and all the facilities - they’re amazing, and it’s actually quite affordable. You’re close to the beach, the medical precinct, you’re close to town, you’re close to everything.

And you can do as much or as little as you like. If you want to get involved, you can. If you want to have a rest, you can. It’s up to you. I love the freedom that you’ve got, all the options and so much choice of things to do. I just love it!

How do you like to spend your time at Evermore?

I spend a lot of time in the garden, trimming and looking after all the plants. It’s just a great place for me to relax and enjoy and stay connected with nature.

I really get a lot of pleasure out of helping other people, so I often get in and lend a hand to some of the residents who need a bit of help, which is really rewarding. I get invites to people’s apartments all the time, and I like the fact they let dogs in. I just really love having dogs around. In truth, I
