he Manning-Great Lakes area never fails to inspire, impress and constantly remind us how lucky we are to live here. This month we were privileged to travel out to beautiful Gloucester, so we could showcase some of the hardworking business people, talented creatives and glorious scenery that the area is known for.

We hope our special “Get out to Gloucester” feature will inspire you to travel the Bucketts Way this April …

On the Cover Barbers have a special place within the hairdressing indusrty and with old school barbering coming back into fashion, we meet Patrick Calabria, owner of Elite Barber Crew in Taree.

Adele recently illustrated her best friend Chris Dean’s children’s book, Bruce the Bush Rat, and her charming illustrations are on display at the Gloucester Gallery throughout late April - May. Taree Film Society and Rotary on the Manning are excited to bring a special screening of the award-winning film Tanna to town on April 5th. This film looks amazing … Check out the photography stills on pages 10 and 11! One of the film’s Directors will be on hand to introduce the film and conduct a Q&A session after the screening and best of all, money raised on the night will go towards our combined local Rotary Clubs’ ongoing support and aid in Tanna, Vanuatu. “ ut of all the places in the world to live, what made you choose to make the ManningGreat Lakes home?

I was born in California and spent many years living and performing in Europe. I was lucky to discover the Mid North Coast 10 years ago and moved here not long after. The quality of life in this region really is second to none. From the coastal range to the crystal sea, we’ve got flowing rivers, beautiful lakes, diverse forests, endless beaches and abundant wildlife. It just doesn’t get much better than that.

It’s been a few magic tricks between chats; what are some of the highlights over the past few years?

Well, it certainly has been an adventure. In the past few years, I’ve toured the globe, from the bright lights of Las Vegas to the northern lights of Scandinavia. I’ve performed and lectured at dozens of top venues, from The Magic Castle in Hollywood to The Magic Circle in London. A list of highlights isn’t complete without mentioning the show I did at the 800th Venice Carnival. I was also honoured to be the Master of Ceremonies for the largest gathering of magicians ever at The Winter Gardens Opera House in Blackpool, England.

There have been countless presentations in mystical places like Glastonbury, Sedona and Woodstock, plus Magic Festivals from Melbourne to Helsinki.

How has your magic progressed or developed?

The nice thing about magic is that there’s always something new to learn or discover.

I’m constantly challenging myself by setting the bar ever higher. Before an original routine hits the stage, there are many hours of brainstorming, rehearsal and development. I often say to younger magicians that it doesn’t matter where you are on the ladder. What matters is that you’re always reaching for the next rung.

Tell us about the show you’re performing at the MEC …

I am happy to announce that on Saturday, April 9th, I’m bringing my full show to Taree!

This is a family friendly celebration of wonder, suitable for all ages. At 500 seats, The Manning Entertainment Centre is the perfect venue; small enough to be intimate, yet big enough for a true theatrical experience.

Do audiences ever try to guess how a trick is done, or do you find people usually enjoy the mystery more than the answer?

The magician is often perceived as a trickster, but the real goal is to cast a spell of wonder.

Some see it as a puzzle to be solved.

Others are content to enjoy the experience.

My job is to balance the two while making sure everyone has fun. Magic should appeal to the mind and the heart, the intellect and sentiments. Besides being fooled by how it’s done, magic should amaze, amuse and even inspire.

In your experience, what are the biggest challenges when presenting magic?

I find that the biggest challenge is to

minimise suspicions in order to maximise wonder. We all want to figure out how an effect is done. That’s just curiosity and human nature. But there’s a deeper magic beyond being fooled, and that’s always my objective.

The Once Upon a Time of childhood innocence is still there, deep inside all of us. The trick is finding our way back. The magician should light the way.

Interest in magic is at an all time high.

What are your thoughts on the growing appreciation for the art?

I think we can safely say that magic is alive and well. Worldwide, there is a renewed interest and growing respect for the art. More people are being exposed to close-up magic as well, which is often even more amazing because it takes place right before your eyes and sometimes in your own hands.

That said, most people’s only experience of magic is seeing it on TV. While there’s nothing wrong with that, magic hasn’t survived since the dawn of man because of television or YouTube. It has survived and thrived because it is meant to be seen live, with no camera tricks and no second chances.

What have been some of the greatest testimonials you’ve received?

That’s a very good question. Liberace apparently said he never read his reviews because, “If they’re good, they go to my head and if they’re bad they go to my stomach”.

With that in mind, I guess my favourite

testimonials are the ones that remind me why I do what I do, like when a five year old exclaims, “That was the funnest time ever!” or a grandparent thanks me for a magical experience they could share with their grandkids.

Do you have any advice for those interested in magic or up and coming illusionists/magicians?

The good news is that one can start learning magic at almost any age. I started when I was five, but some start at 65. There are books and DVDs for beginners and experts. This year I’ll be offering a series of beginners’ magic classes.

At Wayward Jerseys, they believe in the philosophies of free range kids, natural produce and being surrounded by lots of animals, and they wanted to give people the opportunity to experience this too.

ell us about yourself and your family ...

My name is Deb O’Brien, and I grew up in the local area. After ten years of travelling Australia, my husband and I realised that “home” was a pretty awesome place and made the decision to move back. I would describe myself as a unique blend of quirky and earthy, and I believe Wayward Jerseys Farmstay reflects that. Wayward Jerseys would not be, without the love and support of my husband, Lauri Pulkkinen. Lauri is the type of man who not only supports his wife to follow her crazy dreams, but also says, “Fine, you want to buy a milking cow … Well, let me build you a dairy”.

We also have three beautiful little girls, ranging in ages from six to eleven, who love their way of life and love sharing it with other people. I have always loved animals and am passionate about the New England area. I truly believe I have the best job in the world!

What prompted the beginning of Wayward Jerseys?

The name “The Home for Wayward Jerseys” (shortened to Wayward Jerseys for convenience) was initially a term that my husband jokingly used to describe my penchant for Jersey cows.

It also alludes to what we see as their unique personalities. Simply, we wanted to share with

others what we consider to be fortunate to Pop as well. I find our guests often come from have. Our guests are a pretty open minded lot and even if incredulous at the beginning, it is not long before they get into the spirit of things and are milking cows like a professional. Actually, one of my favourite things is being introduced to a child at the beginning of a stay who has their head down and focused on their favourite video game, and by the end of their stay they couldn’t even tell you where their gaming device is.

Do you think locals like us take for granted what’s in our own back yard in regards to primary produce?

Yes and no. Yes, because I think we are truly spoilt here in regards to our primary produce.

But just because we are spoilt, doesn’t mean that most people don’t know they are on a good thing by living here. It’s like this area is a wonderful secret, and all us locals are in on it. There is a lot of buzz around local food and produce at the moment - justifiably so - and there are also a lot of amazing and dynamic people starting to really do some incredible things. I would have to say that it is pretty exciting times here in New England.

Plans for the future?

Yes, yes and yes. At the moment my lips are sealed, but think tourism and think local produce, and watch this space!

W

hat’s your history in the barber industry? What was the defining moment that inspired you to choose that path, and how did you start out?

I started my apprenticeship in Manly in 1993 in men’s and ladies’ hairdressing. Through that four years of my apprenticeship I worked in the busiest and longest established salon and barber shop in the Northern Beaches, with great barbers and stylists.

I was also taught by an Italian master barber in all the long lost arts of barbering, including cut throat shaving, stropping and sharpening the razor. As this was a field of perfection, I knew this was the path for me.

How did you come to call the ManningGreat Lakes home?

In the 23 years of working as a hairdresser and barber I owned two successful salon/barber shops in the Northern Beaches, one of which was the shop I did my apprenticeship in. After learning everything I could from my boss, he retired, I took over and also took it to the next level.

In that time I also taught hairdressers from Hairhouse Warehouse for competition. I married a girl from Gloucester and after having our first child, we thought a much better place to raise our kids would be in the Manning-Great Lakes.

So, we sold the shops and moved to Tuncurry and haven’t looked back.

Tell us a bit about your newly opened barber shop, “Elite Barber Crew”. What inspired

you to open in Taree, and how has your business been received?

What inspired me to open in Taree was the lack of barbering skills in the area. Having worked in a barber shop in Tuncurry from the time I moved there, I realised a lot of customers were travelling to Tuncurry to get great and modern haircuts from us, which no one else in the area could do.

So, I started looking for a shop and decided that I’d come to Taree to save you from bad haircuts! I’ve been warmly welcomed by the community and highly appreciated, with very happy customers and all return business.

What areas of barbering do you specialise in?

I like to say I specialise in all aspects of barbering. I’ve worked hard to perfect my skills in all aspects of barbering, because it’s an industry of perfection. You can’t just be good at one thing, because every customer is different and every customer deserves 100 percent. It’s a personal thing and when you walk out of a shop, you should feel great.

What’s your favourite technique and why?

I would have to say my favourite technique would be fading, because it’s highly precise with no room for error. Being a perfectionist, I love doing fades; the end results always put a big grin on the customer’s face.

What does barbering mean to you? And what is the experience you want to offer

your clients?

Barbering and the men’s fashion industry have come a long way. It’s great to see men put a lot more effort into grooming themselves, from looking after their beards with beard oils and beard balms, to men pampering themselves with a hot towel shave for a precise and super smooth finish that lasts longer than with your normal razor.

The experience I give is the total package, from stylish hair cuts to grooming your beards and pampering the customers with a cut throat shave. I believe if you are going to walk into a barber shop, the barber should be able to offer the whole package as I do.

How has the industry changed over the years, in your opinion? And how do you see its future?

I don’t believe the industry has changed that much at all. I’d say the new up and coming barbers have missed out on the real traditional stuff, so I’m going to put a course together for people in the industry to learn from. But as for hairstyles, they are all just variations of haircuts that we did years ago, just with a new age twist.

Do you have any tips for taking care of skin

and hair both pre and post shave/cut?

It’s definitely important when shaving, especially if you have thick stubble and sensitive skin, to use a hot towel, then rub in a pre shave cream, which helps soften the stubble more than just applying shaving cream over the top. After you finish shaving, a nice after shave soothing balm is excellent to calm any razor burn.

When styling hair, I recommend King Brown Pomades and Waxes, which are water soluble and great on the hair with no residue. For the person who is growing a beard, you will notice that the hair draws moisture from the skin, making it itchy, so I recommend using beard oils and beard balms, which I also stock. They eliminate the itch, leaving your beard feeling and smelling nice and without looking dry and wirey.

Yes, we are delighted to announce that we are about to double the size of our existing Tuncurry village!

We have entered into contracts to purchase the adjoining land next door, and we are currently preparing the application to Council.

What are you proposing for the expansion?

Well, we have listened to our residents and to people who come looking at our village, and we have designed the new section to cater exactly for what they are looking for. The new units will be larger and have more space around them. There will be a new Community Centre too, featuring a TV theatre and more communal lounge space.

How many new units are planned?

At this stage, we are proposing 21 large one bedroom units and 21 huge two bedroom units. All units will be finished to our usual high standards, with granite or Caesarstone benchtops, quality stainless steel appliances, polyurethane cabinets and beautifully appointed bathrooms. All units come fully equipped with all appliances installed, right down to the dishwasher, washing machine and clothes dryers.

What about couples?

Sunrise is ideal for couples, particularly if they have different care requirements. Usually, in the past, one partner would have to go into an Aged Care nursing home and the other would continue to live in the family home. This obviously led to the anguish of separation. Some of our residents have been married for over 60 years! If they are separated through illness this can lead to one, or both of them, going downhill physically and emotionally.

However, at Sunrise couples stay together in their own unit. The person that requires care can receive as many support services as they need, whilst the other partner can continue to support their partner and also join in the activities and the wonderful, supportive atmosphere of the village.

We have an Open Day on Saturday 2nd April from 10am to 3pm. We welcome everyone to come and have a look at the existing village and to look at the plans for the new units. They can register their interest on the day and secure their future.

A FILM BY BENTLEY DEAN AND MARTIN BUTLER Bentley Dean and Martin Butler have combined their creative talents to produce an amazing film - Tanna, which was filmed on location in Tanna, Vanuatu, under the watchful presence of the island’s active volcano, starring local actors, and telling local stories … Taree Film Society and Taree on Manning Rotary Club will present a special screening of Tanna at the MEC on April 5 - a not to be missed event …

H

ow did such an unusual film come to be made?

BENTLEY: Back in 2004 I found myself on the lip of Tanna’s very active volcano discussing geopolitics with the leader of the millenarian John Frum movement for SBS’ international current affairs program, Dateline. With deep concern, Chief Isaac explained how he was beginning to doubt whether the USA would fulfill the prophecy of returning to Tanna and questioned their recent invasion of Iraq. “In World War 2, they stopped the Japanese here. They did good. But why are they in Iraq? I think it’s for money.”

On cue, the volcano ejected lava and ash in an almighty eruption. Perhaps responding to my wide eyes, Chief Isaac reassured me: “Tanna is one special island”. He’s right. Just 50 km by 20 km, it contains dense rainforest, black and white sand beaches, brilliant coral and a stark ash plain. But it also contains one of the most diverse and unique set of belief systems in the world.

MARTIN: In mid 2013 we had just finished a landmark series on the Aboriginal history of Australia and were between projects. Bentley told me he wanted to live with his partner and two young children in a very different culture before they started school and proposed we

make a feature film on Tanna. Given that neither of us had made drama before and we had no money, I thought it a particularly ambitious plan, if not foolhardy. But, we knew we had a couple of strong advantages. Our two person crew using equipment we owned, enabled us to film for many months without huge expense and we had developed a successful way of filming with traditional people based on respect, patience and personal rapport.

We went to Tanna to test the waters.

The head of Tanna’s Culture Centre, Jacob Kapere, suggested visiting the village of Yakel to discuss the idea. We were welcomed warmly by the men, all dressed in nambas (penis sheaths), and invited to drink kava. The next morning we played Rolf De Heer’s Ten Canoes on a laptop to demonstrate the type of film we might make - a film based on their stories, with them as writers

and actors. They had never seen a feature film before.

But what they wanted to know was: “Can we start tomorrow?”

During those first few days on Tanna, we were taken to the other side of the island where a big meeting was taking place between all the tribes from the area. A young couple were in love but she had been promised to another tribe as part of an arranged marriage. We were fascinated. Passions flared, and in the end it was agreed that each side should exchange kava and pigs and that the couple could stay together and marry, as long as her tribe provided another woman in the future.

We were told after that these disputes were not resolved so easily in the past. Star crossed lovers, tribal disputes, challenge to the old ways - some powerful dramatic themes were emerging.

How did you do the casting?

There was a lot of life meeting art in the

process of casting. The Chief of Yakel plays the Chief of Yakel - Chief Charlie. The medicine man plays the Medicine Man. Everyone agreed that Mungau should play the leading man, Dain, because he was the most handsome. But he was petrified of showing physical affection with a woman in public - something that is strictly taboo. Collectively, we convinced him and by the end of the film he was quite comfortable …

Marie, who plays Wawa, was a one of a kind but took a long time to find. Every other girl we auditioned could barely look Mungau in the eye - light years from the feisty teenager the film called for. But the instant Martin saw Marie, he knew she was the one (Bentley could only see blurred shapes at the time due to severe viral conjunctivitis) - stunning, with an infectious laugh and great emotional depth in her eyes.

The Peacemaking Tribe and Witness Tribe were drawn from neighbouring tribes more or less in line with their traditional roles. Astonishingly, the men thought the enemy tribe, The Imedin, should be played by the tribe with whom Yakel were having a real-life bloody land dispute. They

Their chief flatly refused, calling Lingai a bastard - which is the worst possible thing you can say to a Tannese man, as it implies he has no right to his land. Lingai beat him up, and several other men when they tried to ambush him.

The film nearly ended before it began, but all was eventually resolved by a meeting where pigs and kava were exchanged. They decided it would be better to cast Supreme Chief Mikum and his people as The Imedin. With a real-life nickname, Tangalua (Snake), he couldn’t have been more menacing.

How did you work with the Yakel people to get their impressive performances?

Tanna was shot in an unusual way. None of the actors are literate or have had any experience acting. The story and dialogue were developed through workshopping and improvisation on location. At the start of filming each scene, we would ask everyone on location what would happen in real life. What do the tribe think of the film?

We promised the people of Yakel they would be the first in the world to see Tanna. But a few weeks before the scheduled cast and crew screening, Cyclone Pam devastated Vanuatu, and Yakel was not spared. Every house, except a specially built traditional cyclone proof hut, was destroyed. Thankfully, no one was killed.

Incredibly, they insisted we come to show the film as planned. Yakel was barely recognisable trees were flattened, crops destroyed, but already about a third of the huts had been rebuilt and they’d buried enough food before the cyclone to keep them going short term. Spirits were high as they erected a screen we had brought - two white sheets sewn together - lashed to a massive banyan tree that had survived the winds.

Tribes from all directions came to watch. It was an unforgettable experience … It was their first film and it starred them in their own language, telling their own story. There were whoops of joy and laughter, tut-tuts when the lovers did the wrong thing, teenage boys sniggering during the love scenes, while young girls at the front shouted at them to keep quiet. The following day, after much internal discussion, the chiefs

gave us what will be our best review. “We know you came here with your equipment and idea to make a film, but we want to inform you that we consider this our film.” They said the film reflected the truth and would help keep Kastom strong. They gave us a chicken and sacred kava root ...

i Belinda. Tell us a little about yourself ... What originally brought you to Wingham?

I moved to the Manning Valley from Sydney in 1998, and roughly three years ago my partner and I decided to purchase a house. We fell in love with the first we looked at located in Wingham and bought it. Wingham certainly lives up to its name, “The Friendly Town”, with people greeting you as you walk up and down the street, so it’s no wonder we love living here.

How did you come up with the concept for Not a Café ... and when did you first open the doors of the business?

My mum passed away, leaving me a small inheritance, so I decided to open my own business - something I’d always wanted to do.

I spent about 12 months trying to work out what Wingham didn’t have that had a chance of survival, would help others and also help bring people to our beautiful town.

I also wanted to ensure my dollars went as far as possible, so I invited creative people in our local region to place items in my shop for sale on consignment, to avoid outlaying money on stock.

I am, what I personally call multi-creative, lending my hand to writing, drawing, photography, music and other crafts and knew there were others like me in our local area.

I wanted to provide an outlet that focused solely on selling people’s creativity, with no distractions or huge mark ups. I placed a small advert in the local paper, stuck some flyers on the shop window, and then the phone started

The shop opened in May 2015 with 58 artisans, and I’m proud to say we now have nearly 200 people selling through the shop.

I am truly grateful to the first 58 who placed their trust in me and could see my vision, for without them Not a Café would not exist.

Introduce us to some of the wonderful artists, whose products you stock in store.

It was evident in the first few weeks that the shop was truly needed, as people from all walks of life, including pensioners and children, came to me. There were quite a few tears shed as some sat on the lounge and shared their stories with me as we booked in their items.

Some artisans had been selling for years, while others were just starting their journey, but no matter what their background, everyone was treated the same - we are all equal, and there are no favourites in the shop.

So many of them thought their items weren’t good enough ... How wrong they were!

Not a Café is not just about art and crafts.

We sell anything created in the local region (if it’ll fit in the shop) except food and drinks. Our range of products include books, photography, CDs, art and craft, lures, gaiters, toys, jewellery, clothing, small furniture items, soft furnishings and much more.

With new people joining the Not a Café family each week, I never know what new stock is around the corner, which is very exciting and also challenging in relation to shop layout. In fact, fitting out the shop at the beginning was one of the hardest things to do, as I had no idea what items I was going to stock.

Of the items you stock, what are some of your favourites at the moment?

I have no favourites in the shop, but we have some very exciting pieces at the moment - like a 1.7 m chainsaw carving of Ned Kelly, a 2 m goanna made from steel, amazing creations made from silver cutlery, stunning artwork in all price ranges, great CDs and books ... I could go on and on, because I love it all!

What types of special visitors does your store receive ... e.g. do musicians and/ or artisans ever give demonstrations in store?

Last year Not a Café had several events in the shop, including free live music, free children’s book readings, artists working in store, intuitive readings and one of my personal highlights ... a visit from Santa.

It would be remiss of me not to mention Big Bear at this point, as he has a huge Facebook following. Big Bear is a giant teddy bear made especially for Not a Café by one of our artisans to help promote the shop, and he arrived just in time for one of our children’s book readings.

The kids loved him!

The support received from both artisans and locals has been just amazing. The shop is manned by Karen (a volunteer) every Wednesday to allow me to spend the day seeing new artisans, eight volunteers helped on our stand at the Wingham Akoostik Festival and numerous volunteers helped out on our opening day, just to get the doors open.

What special events do you have coming up over the next few months?

Here are just some of the great events we have coming up in the shop:

25-27 March - Phil Cook exhibiting his artwork; 10 April - Kath Mears doing one on one Intuitive Wax Art Readings; 16 April - “Artists in April”, which includes Ron Hindmarsh, Christina Hall and Jo Ernst all working in the shop; 15 May - “Musicians in May”, with free live music from The Trapps, Sweet Nothin’, Jake Davey and Simon Morse; also, Robin Harrington will be pumping out some tunes on his funky guitars made from pots and pans.

I believe there’s a place for Not a Café in many regional areas, and I’m pleased to announce that a new Not a Café is scheduled to open in May in Wauchope, which will cater to artisans in that local region. Ash and Indy will own and run the shop under a licence, and we’re all very excited to see what that region has to offer.

That was the message that came from last month’s seminar presentation with Dr Chris Caton.

It is with regularity that I hear retiree investors struggle with low interest rates and their need for alternatives.

It is important to note, however, that the plain old bank account or fixed term deposit has a role to play as when held together, they provide security, ready access, and some income that at least gets close to current inflation.

However, the dilemma facing many is that when expenses exceed income, capital gets drawn on and a spiral of diminishing capital and sources of income follows, unless there is a more robust strategy in place that can reverse that trend.

Measures such as indices don’t tell full story.

According to MorningStar Bloomberg, since 1993 the January to December performance of investment asset classes tells us that in 1994 short term cash deposits was the best performer, with the broad asset class of fixed interest holding the flag in 2008 and 2011.

This means that in the remaining 18 years, shares both overseas and domestic and listed property provided the best performance.

Where indices such as the all ordinaries index do not give the full story, is that the income that is paid from Australian shares is not included.

When judging the performance of Australian Shares and Listed Property Trusts, the income dividends need to be considered as a comparison with other asset classes.

I am not going to name individual shares or managed funds, because I simply can’t imply any specific recommendations in this column,

but I will say that the income paid by most leading shares and listed property funds more than doubles what is on offer with current fixed interest investments.

Where an index also doesn’t tell the full story is the impact of stock selection.

For example, while there was a profound fall in the value of blue chip type stocks such as banks and resources the past year, the mid cap and smaller cap sector made appreciable gains.

Residential property verses shares.

When the cost of maintaining residential property and utilities is accounted for, the income from shares is also generally superior to residential property.

Listed or commercial property has consistently produced better longer term performance than residential property.

While purchasing at the right time might excite property investors and they will claim that they have done well, it always comes back to the question of how well an investor has fared in comparison to another asset class.

Taree Film Society and Taree On Mannning Rotary Club hold a very special screening of Tanna (M) on Tuesday evening 5th April at the Manning Entertainment Centre. Tanna is set in the South Pacific, where Wawa, a young girl from one of the last traditional tribes, falls inlove with her chief’s grandson, Dain. When an inter-tribal war escalates, Wawa is unknowingly betrothed as part of a peace deal. The young lovers run away, but are pursued by enemy warriors intent on killing them.

They must choose between their hearts and the future of the tribe ... Tanna is based on a true story and performed by the people of Yakel in Vanuatu.

For seven months Martin and co-director Bentley Dean lived with the villagers. Working closely with

SPINACH IS AN OLD TIME FAVOURITE VEGETABLE AND IS PART OF OUR GARDEN HERITAGE. “Popeye the Sailor Man” popularised spinach in the 60s and 70s and is still one of the most common vegetables grown and used fresh or cooked. Various spinach types come into the picture, such as English, Warrigal Greens/ New Zealand/Malabar, Ceylon, baby and large leafy varieties. Silverbeet is often referred to as spinach, and has a distinctive white stem with large dark green leaves. Be on the lookout for the highly decorative varieties that have yellow or red stems and adds colour in the garden.

Spinach is a nutritious vegetable that is high in minerals, calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium. If acid foods are an issue, there are some varieties that contain less oxalic acid such as Ceylon. Planting is best carried out in the cooler months and enjoys a mostly sunny position. Tolerates frost but prefers some shade from the hot afternoon sun in spring time. If planting in the ground, provide fertile

soil by adding broken down animal manure, compost or organic fertilizer prior to planting.

Plants enjoy deep watering during dry periods, with a thick mulch to retain soil moisture and suppress any weeds. The leafy upright growth is well suited to container gardening.

Seeds can be sown direct where they are to grow. Thin out any extra plants. A seaweed fertilizer will help plants during the growing season. Harvest leaves weekly to encourage new growth and a regular supply. Leaf Spot is a fungal disease and can be a problem during the warmer months by damaging the leaf with round black spots. It may help to avoid splashing the leaves and watering from underneath the plant. Snails and slugs can be controlled with ducks and chooks, use of beer traps, coffee grounds or pet friendly snail pellets.

Popular Chaplaincy Service Faces Big Cuts ...

ids in high school face a range of challenging issues.

For 15 years, Great Lakes College has enjoyed the services of school chaplains to support and care for kids. Since 2015, this role has been ably carried out by Jose Vergara, who has a degree in Pastoral Ministry and over ten years’ experience. You might see him chatting to that student finding it hard to focus on work because of stress at home, or encouraging a little group of young men thinking about faith and asking the big questions. He hangs out with kids at recess, and finds time to listen to staff

too, offering support when the pressure is on.

Twice a week, with support of volunteers drawn mainly from local churches, you might see him at the “Chill Out” breakfast programme at the Forster campus, feeding hungry teens and helping build their resilience for the day ahead.

For many years, government funding has helped support this work, supplementing the contributions from local churches. This year, the NSW Government funding has been slashed by two thirds. Disappointingly, this will mean that there will no longer

be a chaplain on the Tuncurry Junior Campus.

To offset the severe cutback in the government grant, the GLECCA* Committee is keen to raise funds locally so that students in all three campuses can have access to a chaplain.

On the 11th February, I (Jasmine Farlow) competed in the State Finals of Miss Galaxy Australia, placing in the top four. I will now head to the National Finals to be held at the Mariott Resort and Spa in Surfers Paradise between the 13th - 16th April.

uring my time there I will take part in activities such as fitness days, photoshoots and rehearsals, where I will prepare for the big event. Competing against girls from all accross the country, I will be judged in four sections: interview, fashionwear, swimwear and evening gown. What are we being marked on? Our poise, grace, community work, overall look, our walk, our speech and our conversational skills, just to name a few. This is the third overall year I have competed for the title, and I have my fingers crossed it’s third time lucky for me. Over the past months I have worked tirelessly preparing and getting out and about in my community, volunteering, hosting fundraisers for my chosen charity, the Australia Zoo Wildlife

Warriors (I have raised a total of $3,000 so far) all which has been leading up to this one exciting evening, where only one lady will be chosen to represent Australia at the World Finals in Orlando, Florida, in August. I know I have prepared best I can; but I won’t be putting away my pageant heels just yet! With only four weeks to go, now is the time to press the booster button and go full speed ahead. I believe we have to work if we really want something. e are so lucky to have a wonderful gallery that attracts such fabulous exhibitions.

We were thrilled to be invited back to cater for the Gloucester Food and Wine Society’s seafood extravaganza at one of our favourite venues, Blackhead Surf Club. Our Head Chef Simon Livingston was assisted by another of our chefs, Matt Marshall, to create an 11 course seafood dinner that included Manning Point rock oysters with seaweed salad and wasabi mayonnaise, salt and pepper prawns with miso and sesame, crispy skinned salmon on smoky eggplant, zucchini noodles and basil oil, with so much more. The Food and Wine Club chose a range of wines to specifically match our menu, and 80 people attended this prestigious event. Canapes began on the balcony overlooking the beautiful Blackhead Beach and baths, followed by dinner in the club house.

On March 3rd my beautiful sister, Andre, turned 50. The girls in the family enjoyed a few days in Port Macquarie, with a tasty dinner at Fusion Seven, and then we got together for a special family dinner on the weekend. It is always nice to bring family together, and this was a great way to celebrate a special birthday 22

I love local business and enjoy success stories from local people who do well with their business ideas. One lady who has been extremely successful in a very short time is Yvette Furner from Yvette’s Raw Kitchen. We were the very first stockist of these delicious sweets, and in one year Yvette and her husband Ian, along with their team, have managed to expand to 11 stockists and create a range of sweets to die for. Yvette thought a great place to hold a first birthday is at the venue of her first stockist, so on Friday 19th March we gathered to congratulate her and her team, with a few drinks and some lovely canapes, finished off with some of Yvette’s tasty morsels. A fabulous new website, created by the talented people at Well Creative, was launched and Yvette thanked her stockists, her team and her customers. Happy first birthday!

Last year Grahame, Simon and I travelled to Meals in the Fields up at Near River in Hollisdale, just the other side of Wauchope to enjoy a fantastic meal cooked by our friend Clayton Donovan. We were keen to go again this year, but this time we donned our aprons, took Millie (our new vintage caravan) out of the driveway and headed up to help out.

us with a range of produce, including ethically raised pork that we use in our Cuban rolls.

They are mates of ours and we love anything to do with local produce, and we also knew a few mates would be there, including Beth and Hayden from Burrawong Gaian Poultry, Kim Honan from ABC radio, Bernadette O’Sullivan, (a Wingham girl now living in Kempsey) and many more local food supporters. We had a fabulous time. I looked after the front of house with a great bunch of waitstaff, Millie made an awesome looking bar, serving Byron Bay Wild Cider, Little Brewing Company Beer and Tamburlaine Wines. Simon worked with Clayton and his team in the kitchen to produce the most amazing local menu that was totally well received by all the lovely guests. And Grahame? Every time I saw him, he was eating! The scene was stunning, and we awoke the next day to a beautiful sunrise coupled with perfectly poached local eggs and bacon. Clayton conducted a masterclass on the Sunday, and I ran into my old school friend David Weller from Nabiac, as he was gaining a few tips on smoking.

Black Duck Brewery was our next stop, where we ran into no less than 350 motorcyclists on the Black Dog Ride. This annual one day event is a nationwide project

to raise awareness of depression and suicide prevention. A great cause and an excellent way to raise awareness!

On Monday 14th March, we hosted the Charity Car Clubs Beyond Bitumen ride, with 56 drivers popping by for lunch as the finale to the event. They were one of the friendliest bunches of people, with enormous hearts.

Over four days they managed to raise $68,000 for Beyond Blue, a hugely significant amount of money raised whilst having a great time.

Artisans on the Hill held their annual Artisans Expo at the end of February, and I joined in for a few days to demonstrate my favourite product - Chalk Paint™ by Annie Sloan. I spent the weekend with Millie as a backdrop, upcycling a few pieces and taking a look at some of the other fantastic craft on display.

Peter Calabria demonstrated woodturning, while Christine Calabria showed us how to work with precious metal clay. Guitar maker Warren Targett was there, along with many other talented artisans. It was a lovely weekend that I would thoroughly recommend next year.

ife’s looking a little fairer for lone travellers next year with passengers on a slew of European river cruises no longer facing the discriminatory “single person supplement” that so often effectively bars solo adventurers from the majority of package tours.

With our longer western lifespan, increasing numbers of older voyagers are left without partners; even the high marriage separation rate sees more middle-aged singles wanting to strike out on their own. IT’S ALL IN THE NAME ... YOUNG BOOMERANG BEACH LOCAL LEILA SALT IS GOING TO BE ONE TO WATCH IN THE SPORT OF SURFING, HAVING TAKEN OUT MANY HIGH CALIBRE COMPETITIONS AT THE YOUNG AGE OF 9. LEILA CHATTED WITH FOCUS ABOUT HER LOVE FOR THE OCEAN AND HER DREAMS FOR THE FUTURE ... ow long have you been surfing?

I have been surfing now for about 4½ years, starting when I was about 5 years old. I always wanted to get out and surf with my dad and big brother, Oscar.

Where did you learn to surf?

I started surfing around the Pacific Palms area at Elizabeth Beach, which is usually protected and small for beginners, although on its day it can get big and heavy! From there I progressed to the more challenging waves of Boomerang and Blueys Beach.

You won the Under 10s title at Wahu Surfer Grom Comp series at the Gold Coast in January. Tell us about the competition and how you took it out?

The Wahu Surfer Grom Comps are a national junior series with 10 events held around the country over summer. I competed in three events in the series: the Northern Beaches, which I won; Cronulla, where I finished 3rd; and lastly the Gold Coast, which I also won.

It was great to travel to another state to surf to experience new waves, meet new people and challenge myself against QLD surfers. The conditions for the event were really challenging, with a big swell running and 24 manning-great lakes focus.

strong winds. I managed to win all of my heats and advance through to the Final.

The Final was exciting, but also scary, with some big heavy waves breaking on a shallow sand bar. I got some good early waves in the heat but also got rag dolled on a big set (that I also claimed “wipe out of the comp” award for). Towards the back end of the heat, I managed to get a great wave and I was stoked when the commentator announced my score, and I realised it was enough to put me in the lead and win the Final.

It felt great to win, and I was lucky to have my brother and a group of friends there to lift me out of the water and chair me up the beach, just like the pro surfers do.

What are some of the other competitions you’ve competed in, and which ones have you won?

I have competed in BL'S Blast Off for the past three years. Blast Off is one of the biggest junior competitions in the world and is run by former World Tour surfer Barton Lynch and held on Sydney's Northern Beaches. I placed 2nd 2013, 3rd 2014 and last year I was able to win the event.

I have also competed in and won the Mid North Coast Girls Surf Rider Classic, which is held every year at Bonny Hills, and the Billabong Oz Grom Cup at Coffs Harbour, in which I finished 3rd, as well as wins in the

Do you have a favourite location to surf, and who do you like to surf with?

My favourite place to surf is home at Boomerang Beach; it has to be one of the best beaches in the world! I also like to surfing at Narrawalle on the South Coast, Kirra on the Gold Coast and Keramas in Bali.

I love surfing with my dad and brothers and also all the local Palms Groms around home.

How many times a week do you get out in the water?

I usually surf every day except Monday, when I have swim squad training. I try to surf as much as I can, whenever I can!

What type of board do you ride?

I ride a custom Webster Surfboard 4' 3" Sabre model. Wayne Webster, who made my board, said it was the smallest board he has ever shaped.

Who’s your favourite pro surfer?

Stephanie Gilmore is my favourite female surfer, and Julian Wilson is my favorite male.

Biggest and scariest wave you’ve ever surfed?

Some of the biggest waves I have ridden

have been here at home at South Boomerang.

The waves were bigger than a two storey house and really scary, but exciting at the same time.

I took a lot of beatings, but managed to get a few really good ones too. I have also surfed some really big but perfect waves at Kirra on the Gold Coast.

How do you prepare yourself for surf contests?

I don't really have a set routine yet; I just try to surf as much as I can and go and get to enjoy new waves, places and meeting new friends. Maybe in the next couple of years I will start to do some heat specific training.

What are your goals and dreams for surfing?

My main thing at the moment is to enjoy surfing and learn new things every time I surf.

I enjoy competing and hope to keep getting some good results along the way.

I would love to one day compete on the World Tour travelling the globe, and it could be my job to surf. Hopefully I can just keep surfing and see where it will take me - see and surf the world and meet and visit awesome people and places.

Billabong Zoo Billabong Zoo is delighted to announce the much anticipated arrival of our two cheetah brothers, Warrior and Vongani (the name means “to give thanks”). These brothers have travelled all the way from Cheetah Outreach in Cape Town, South Africa, and they’ve come with an important message. The cheetah is well known for being the fastest land mammal, capable of reaching speeds of 100 km per hour - but they are losing their greatest race of all - the race of survival.

Since the turn of the century, their population numbers have dramatically declined from 100,000 animals down to as few as 10,000 today. They are rapidly losing their habitat and natural food sources, and this leads to regular conflict with farmers as the cheetahs are forced to hunt domestic prey. Warrior and Vongani are here to raise awareness and support for the conservation efforts being undertaken by Cheetah Outreach and their livestock guardian programme. A special thank you to our friends at Mogo Zoo, who quarantined our boys in Australia.

i Adele. What's your association with the Gloucester area... How long have you lived there?

I have lived in the Gloucester district all my life and have had the honour to live on the family farm, which has been home for six generations, including for my three children.

Gloucester is an important part of my identity.

The familiar picturesque landscape and our wonderful community are my driving forces.

I have been so incredibly supported by many people in the district, who are a constant source of inspiration and encouragement for my art.

Where did your passion for art and creativity begin?

Living on the flats of the Barrington River, I am surrounded by wonderful shapes and textures, and lots of little creatures that are a part of my own magical wonderland. They spark off my daily thoughts of, “What will I make today?”

I have always been creative, I am blessed with a strong imagination, and a sketchpad is never too far away. My joy for creativity has intensified with the years, and my art has become freer and has broadened across many more mediums than ever before.

You're a woman of many talents.

What are some other items you most like to create?

I am very tactile. I have fallen into the spell of felt making, and I am constantly discovering new and exciting ways to play with this colourful medium.

Well, there is a bit of a story to this. Chris, my best friend, knows me so well. I think that larrikin has written the book about me … Or perhaps I have turned into Bruce.

I know Bruce very well, as you can imagine.

He likes to please, he is adventurous, colourful, and kind. He loves to explore, to travel, and yet he loves the place called home. He loves other rats, he cares and admires other rats’ activities, but best of all, he loves himself with a genuine happiness and warmth.

What other artistic projects do you have in the pipeline?

Puppet making is bubbling. But I really do just live in the moment and let the art do the talking.

I have a great deal of inspirational friends and activities in my life. These influences are constantly spurring me on in different directions.

CUSTOMER SERVICE CONSISTENCY THE THORNTON FAMILY HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF TAKING ITS FIRST FAMILY VACATION - EVER - OVER THE PAST MONTH.

N

ik and I do get away to conferences for a couple of days a year, but in the 10 years since our eldest daughter was born, we haven’t had an opportunity to take a real vacation. So we spent nearly three weeks in the USA visiting Disneyland, Universal Studios, Las Vegas and a lazy few days in Hawaii on the way home.

Some elements in the US really opened our eyes. Yes, tipping is weird, food is not the same, I hated the coffee, cars are on the wrong side of the road and a two hour 80 km traffic jam in LA is normal. We even had an American driver taking us to LAX who was very open about his country and the downfalls and issues it has. I won’t go into detail on these, but one of the big positives we noticed was the customer service ethos.

From major theme parks like Disneyland to the corner store, the level of consistency on customer service was astounding! It is something we here could learn a lesson or two about. The American people are genuinely some of the friendliest you will meet and once they realise you are Australian, they go to a new level. To be greeted with a big smile and, “Hello Sir, how are you?” every time without fail was magic. To then be walked around stores and when you present your goods at the checkout be asked, “Did you find everything OK today, Sir?” without fail was amazing. Again, this was from the smallest of local retailer or grocer to the big resorts! Yes, we expected it from Disneyland, but small shops and even bus drivers to the letter all said and did the same

thing.

I don’t profess to know whether there is customer service coaching or training, but it couldn’t have been a fluke. Even in Las Vegas where “anything goes”, we had the same.

For a country whose people in general earn considerably less than we do, they put on a service persona that cannot be beat. Ironically, when returning home, the first place we stopped in town was a petrol station, and I was greeted with “Hi Darl,” and left with “thanks Luv.” Don’t get me wrong: plenty of businesses in The Manning-Great Lakes provide exceptional customer service, but it’s hard not to compare after being in a nation who were so consistent in delivery and so willing to do anything to help.

We know Forster Tuncurry Chamber has had a service drive for some time, but what this opened my eyes to was the need for better training at a grass roots level. Imagine having our region known for consistency in service delivery. This is not robotic, by the way; it was done in a genuine manner. For tourists to leave an area with memories of how they were treated leads to more referrals and more return business. I would love to see The ManningGreat Lakes recognised in such a way. Here I am spruiking the service of a country to up to 50,000 potential readers; imagine if others did the same for The Manning-Great Lakes!

What can your Chamber do to help with this?

Well, let’s talk about some training opportunities which may even have grants attached to them, reducing your costs. First impressions always last. If those impressions are continually repeated, the flow on effect is enormous.

ast year’s inaugural DMDO event was met with an abundance of gratitude and enthusiasm expressed by business owners and marketing professionals alike. In fact our post event survey indicated that 94% of our survey respondents planned to attend the event again in 2016.

Life line LIFELINE MID COAST HAS A LONG HISTORY OF SUPPORTING PEOPLE BEREAVED BY SUICIDE.

ollowing the Christmas Memorial Service, held in Tinonee, there was a definite need identified in the Manning-Great Lakes area to support

people who have been impacted by the suicide of a loved one. Now Lifeline is able to offer a Support After Suicide group in Taree that will meet on the third Wednesday of each month at 6pm at 250 Victoria Street, Taree.

When you lose someone to suicide, there are often extra issues faced by those left behind. We can feel that we don’t want to burden our friends with our grief anymore. Often however, we still need to talk about our loss. In the Support After Suicide group there is the opportunity to talk

about these extra issues. You can find others who understand what you’re experiencing and can’t bring up with family and friends. Sometimes we can’t speak at all, for there are no words to express the feelings we’re going through. The group may help you to sort through your grief and process your thoughts. It helps to know you’re not alone.

The group is conducted by trained facilitators who have also lost family members or friends to suicide and is held on the third Wednesday of each month commencing 17th February, 6pm - 8pm at 250 Victoria Street, Taree. Given how personal this issue can be for both parents and kids, a little common sense needs to prevail. I firmly believe that behaviours not how much kids weigh - should be the standard that we measure. If you’re unsure about the healthy behaviours of your kids, see how your family stacks up against this healthy lifestyle checklist: • Do your kids have any active games or sports that they enjoy? For some kids this isn’t hard, but for others this might be challenging. Whatever you try, it’s crucial that it’s matched to your child’s motor development so they can experience some mastery over the activity. A child’s movement confidence is a vital predictor of

• Are your children involved in food preparation? Having your kids in the kitchen during meal preparation can be a great way to combat fussy eating. Kids thrive in situations where they feel empowered, so giving them a little choice at mealtime might diffuse some conflict. Try growing the odd herb or vegetable together to cook with later on.

• Do you and your kids know how to read a food label? Steer away from packaged and processed foods if you can to combat the potential deception of some food marketing strategies. When this isn’t possible, knowing how to read a food label is vital. Don’t take the shortcut of judging a food product on appearance or advertising claims. The nutrition panel is where you’ll really find out

whether the product is worth feeding to your family.

• Do your kids get a chance to see you being physically active? Kids learn best by imitation. Countless research tells us children who have inactive parents with poor dietary habits are much more likely to struggle with health issues like Diabetes and heart disease when they reach adulthood. • Does your child get at least eight hours’ sleep a night? Enforcing bedtime routines at any age can be a recipe for conflict. One big issue is the use of tech devices into the evening. My dentist has informed me I need to have a front tooth extracted. I hate the thought of wearing a denture; what are my other options?

The best way to replace a missing tooth is by dental implants. Implants have a 99% success rate and implant placement preserves bone and gum in the area, so it will look like a natural tooth.

Q. What is a provisional crown?

Traditionally a crown could not be placed on an implant until the bone around the implant was fully integrated; this usually takes about 6 months. But now with careful planning and skill, a provisional crown can be placed.

A provisional crown will look like a natural tooth, but will initially be made so that it does not contact the opposing teeth. This is to ensure ideal integration of the implant in the bone. If you imagine a star picket in a bucket

of setting cement, if you are moving the picket around, the cement will not set, and the picket will continue to move.

Q. What is involved with the planning?

A 3D X-ray is taken to assess the amount of bone. Then the implant is planned using the software to the desired position. This data is collaborated with a CEREC scan of the patient’s mouth, so a crown can be designed and milled in-house. Once this planning has been completed, a surgical guide is constructed which will allow for key hole placement of the implant to within 500 um.

Q. What can I expect from the procedure?

The procedure takes about 1 - 2 hours.

With the use of the surgical guide, it is a mimimally invasive procedure with a short healing time. During the procedure the tooth will be extracted, the titanium implant placed through the surgical guide and if initial stability is achieved, the provisional crown placed.

i Kate. Introduce us to Alesco Senior College, Tuncurry. Why was this college established locally, and where is it located?

Alesco Senior College is an independent school that caters for students who have previously struggled to find success in a mainstream education setting. Alesco allows students to learn in an adult-like environment while studying Board of Studies curriculum and therefore be eligible to receive their Record of School Achievement (RoSA).

Alesco Senior College was first established in 2002 in Newcastle as an initiative of WEA Hunter. When WEA Hunter expanded to Forster/ Tuncurry as WEA Coast, it opened up the opportunity for the successful Alesco model to also operate here. We are located diagonally across the road from the movie theatre in the WEA Coast building.

Alesco was established in the area, as there was a need for students who didn’t fit the traditional model of education to still be provided with the opportunity to complete their education. We enrol any student who experiences difficulty in being successful in their mainstream school. This difficulty is different for each student; for some it will be anxiety, depression or disengagement, for others it may be living in out of home care, lack of family support, unstable home situation or any other “road block” in the young person’s education.

We recognise these issues exist, we don’t ignore them; instead, we accept them, support them and nurture the needs of the student in order to take back control of their life and complete their education.

How do you help students become ready for employment or further studies?

Students follow Board of Studies syllabuses and meet all the relevant requirements to be able to receive their RoSA if they choose to leave school at the end of Year 10 or to go on and complete their HSC. Employability skills are really important to us, and we make every effort to prepare students for employment because we recognise how important employment is and how difficult it can be to secure. As well as Work Experience, we teach students how to write a resume, dress for an interview and apply for a job, and sometimes we play out a mock interview situation. We recognise the industries in the local area that are able to provide employment opportunities, and we help students build a little portfolio of work ready skills, like their First Aid Certificate, Barista Certificate and Hospitality safe food skills.

What is the fee structure for students?

We have an annual school fee of $50. Part of our educational philosophy is that we believe a young person’s circumstances (including financial hardship) should not negatively impact their educational success.

Fortunately, we are in a position where we are able to supply students with everything they need to learn - books, pens, calculators etc. Local business have been very supportive of Alesco, and this has allowed us to run a breakfast and lunch programme where students can use the kitchen and make breakfast and lunch.

Essentially, a student can turn up with nothing and still have a productive day at school.

hat were some turning points in your life that led to your passion for helping people?

At the age of eleven I had a shocker of a motorbike accident, resulting in a massive fracture and three months in hospital. I really missed school and got behind academically. It was a major blow, and I felt isolated. A Physiotherapist helped me with rehabilitation. In my teens I developed back pain that almost stopped me playing my beloved football and cricket. Chiropractors came into my health picture and helped me maintain my body and be my best. At 53, I am fit enough to be surfing, dancing with Annika and running on the beach. I love helping people, so Chiropractic and Applied Kinesiology are great vehicles for that.

What health issue is of special interest to you at Spectrum Natural Family Health Care?

Nine years ago I began learning about and realising the potential of this amazing, gentle technique called Retained Neonatal Reflexes (RNR) to help especially young kids. It hit me like a bolt out of the blue that this was my thing, so I plunged into developing these skills and studying post graduate paediatrics as well.

I am a leader in helping parents and interested health professionals explore the likely causes of learning and behaviour problems.

Please give us a hint of your discussion topics and who should attend?

Manning valley anglican college I enjoy having a diverse group in the room and always learn a lot from what is shared in that space. The subjects we explore are: • What is a Retained Neonatal Reflex (RNR) and what are the known likely causes?

• Then versus now - the new challenges that today’s children face • The importance of purposeful movement for healthy development • The right foods for best health, function and concentration.

• How can a retained reflex interfere with a child’s learning and behavior?

The mark of a successful education is seeing your child grow and develop each and every day. At Manning Valley Anglican College, our goal is to assist each student in building upon their strengths and their talents to move beyond what they believe is possible for themselves.

New programmes introduced in 2016 are seeing students learn in new ways both academically and socially. Our Carpe Diem Gifted and Talented Programme is working with participants from Years 3 to 10 in small focus groups, challenging them to become effective, critical and independent thinkers.

The programme has thus far focused on what makes a great mind unique, and students will display their knowledge at the upcoming

“Night of Notables”, an interactive exhibit focusing on the greatest thinkers and doers in human history. Carpe Diem is underpinned by an individual focus on every student’s academic progress across the school.

Students from Years 7 to 12 have also been taking part in The CREATE Project, which sees them participating in a club or society on a regular basis. Through this programme they build new friendships with their peers based on mutual interests, allowing them to express themselves creatively in a variety of ways, from music and dance to multimedia and design. The CREATE Project is but one part of a broad focus on student wellbeing, in the understanding that positivity is key to success.

How do you identify with your patients in terms of looking after their needs?

My primary school experience of feeling left behind and left out gave me insights into how I would think most kids can feel in that situation.

I make it a priority to connect well with a family who is going through difficult times and try to see what their world is like. So while I have a programme that is well thought through and effective, the key is that it can be individually tailored to fit with each family’s current situation.

hat's your current role on the Can Assist Manning Valley committee, and how long have you held this

position?

I am the current President of Can Assist Manning Valley (CAMV), a position I took on in July 2015. CAMV formed in November 2012.

We have a strong, passionate and hardworking committee consisting of Sue Allport, Dyana Brown, Michelle Cole, Leanne Eakin, Bonita Lindfield, Leanne Newman (Treasurer), Melinda Oirbans (Secretary), Sue Pitman, Tracey Rushworth, Sharon Smyth and Lee Walters.

It's been a little while since we caught up with Can Assist at FOCUS. Could you refresh our memories and explain the aims of the organisation?

CAMV is a grass roots organisation, offering practical support and financial assistance to local cancer patients and their families. CAMV is a completely voluntary organisation, and our key component is that funds raised locally are distributed locally. CAMV is one of 50 Can Assist branches state-wide, supported by a head office in Sydney covering administration costs such as auditing, insurance and marketing ensuring that funds raised locally stay local.

CAMV supports residents in the Manning Valley, through to Moorland in the north, Gloucester in the west and Buladelah in the south and also includes the Great Lakes.

Let’s meet Rob Hurley of Rob Hurley’s Pro Shops Forster and Tuncurry.

Rob, you’re a relatively new local, starting the business in just 2014. Tell us how you came to be the Pro at Forster and Tuncurry?

After working as the Operations Manager at Parkwood International Golf Complex, I was looking for an opportunity to start my own business and get back to my roots as a Golf Professional. I’m passionate about the growth of the game and directly helping people by providing services to enhance their golfing experience. I’ve been very fortunate to have the Forster Tuncurry club provide me with a platform to be directly involved with the community and work in an industry that I love.

Family is such a common denominator in our area. Who makes up the Hurley household, and how do you juggle time between work and life?

I haven’t found the secret to this challenge yet, but I’m certainly in pursuit of that balance.

My wife has been so supportive of the move here and starting this new adventure together.

I am very privileged to be apart of the TJL Ronald McDonald House Charity Golf Day. What Ronald McDonald House provides for families locally and nationally is astonishing, and to be a part of it in a small way is very rewarding.

Growth in this area would be great for us all. I have noticed a lot of the traditional corporate days have evolved and partnered up with charities to provide a great experience for the customers and give back to their communities through charities.

What’s your history in the Manning … Are you born and bred locals, or did you move here?

We both grew up and were educated in Newcastle. Coming from early careers in banking and teaching, we then owned and operated newsagencies and a motel together and wanting a change from seven days a week, looked for a business that was family friendly with reduced hours.

With relatives living at Black Head, we decided a business in the area could be a good thing, as we liked the semi-coastal lifestyle for our young family. When the Cundletown Post Office came on the market, we jumped at the chance for a more settled lifestyle with a good viable business.

When did you purchase the Cundletown Post Office?

We purchased the business and moved in on 5th January 1990.

The Post Office building has quite a bit of history attached to it. What can you tell us about this beautiful building; has it always been a Post Office?

The Cundletown Post and Telegraph Office had been in a number of buildings attached to other businesses around town since 1855.

In the 1880s a petition to move the Post Office out of one of the hotels into a separate building was sent to the Postmaster Generals Dept.

A portion of crown land was obtained near the Court House, and in Sept 1890 the Department of Works accepted a tender from Mr J Healy for £1,739 ($3,478) to erect a brick Post and Telegraph office. This building was opened for business on 3rd Feb 1893, with Mr John Nunn as its first postmaster. It was only

Serving the community and enjoying the social contact with so many people has been particularly satisfying. The opportunity to grow the business into a strong, viable and expanding operation was helped by the support of our many loyal customers.

The Post Office, only being open Monday to Friday and able to be operated by us as husband and wife, gave us the time to spend with our four children as they grew through many years of sports, music, dance and education.

You’ve now decided it’s time to move on, and the business is on the market. What is included with the sale?

APRIL MARKET UPDATE IT HAS BEEN AN INTERESTING COUPLE OF MONTHS IN REAL ESTATE IN THE GREAT LAKES/MANNING VALLEY, WITH DEMAND STILL OUTWEIGHING SUPPLY. I BELIEVE OUR COASTAL AREAS HAVE EXPERIENCED SUCH A HUGE NUMBER OF SALES IN THE PAST TWO YEARS, THAT PROPERTY TURNOVER HAS SLOWED AS PEOPLE SETTLE INTO THEIR NEW HOMES.

ith fewer properties on the market, pressure has been placed on pricing, with quality properties achieving premium prices in very short time frames. This leads me to the question that if a property sells in the first couple of weeks prior to being advertised, one should query whether a real market price had been established with the sale price. In a market like our current market, why are we not seeing more properties being put to auction?

As real estate professionals, we know that an auction is the best way to sell a property at a true market value, especially in this current rising market.

We are still seeing higher end sales, with $1.2 million being achieved for a lifestyle property on 2.5 acres in Darawank and in contrast, $1.2 million for a beautiful five bedroom home on the golf course at Tallwoods. The $600,000 range of lifestyle properties is still proving most popular across Failford, Nabiac, Cedar Party and Wingham. $990,000 bought one lucky buyer 89 acres at Dyers Crossing, with a magnificent four bedroom home built with no expense spared.

Unit sales are still strong, with $860,000 paid for a penthouse at the Pinnacle in Forster with uninterrupted views of the Pacific Ocean.

Still plenty of bargains are apparent, with a unit at the Meridian at Old Bar selling as low as $200,000 fully furnished and currently rented for $450 per week. The cheapest unit sale was in Taree at a bargain price of $89,000, with a current lease at $170 per week.

Land sales still appear strong, mainly in the coastal towns, with sales averaging between $140,000 to $165,000. A unique block of land on the water at Harrington sold for $275,000, with the cheapest block award going to Coomba Park for a mere $42,500 for 619 m².

Not far away, still at Coomba Park, a beautiful five bedroom home on eight manicured acres sold for $895,000.

Other bargains include a two bedroom cottage at Tuncurry for $280,000 on a small 355 m² block, and a horse property on 40 hectares at Rainbow Flat featuring a four bedroom home, manager’s quarters plus stables and sheds for $775,000. It is obvious why our Sydney neighbours are selling up in the big smoke and heading in our direction to settle down on beautiful acreage properties.

With the commercial sector, a couple of coffee shops have changed hands and a few long term vacancies have finally leased, bringing the busy vibe back to the CBD. Hopefully new families moving to the area will continue to create new businesses in our area, with new ideas and a passion to improve our communities.

The residential rental market still continues to thrive, with quick turnovers, low vacancies and strong rents being achieved. With first home buyers back in the market, this has put pressure on vacancies and in turn causing rent increases, with demand still outweighing supply. Overall, a positive couple of months in all aspects of real estate. If we can get anything out of this current market, it is the fact that investing in property is still a safe bet.
