With a background in psychology and a passion for helping people overcome barriers to opportunity, Carlie Comer has spent her career creating positive change in the lives of others. As CEO of Linked Community Services, she now leads one of the region’s most respected community organisations.

CARLIE COMER

LINKED COMMUNITY SERVICES

i Carlie. Congratulations on Linked Community Services’ recent success at the Port Macquarie Business Awards. What did that recognition mean to you, your staff and volunteers?

The recognition was incredibly meaningful because it acknowledged something we have been intentionally building for many years: a culture where people genuinely care about each other and the communities we support. Winning awards for Workplace Health & Wellbeing, and Outstanding Community Organisation was not simply recognition of our programs or initiatives, it was recognition of our people. Every day, our staff and volunteers go above and beyond to help people access healthcare, education, social opportunities and the support they need to live well and independently.

see. Something as simple as attending a birthday party, joining a sporting team or participating in a community activity could require enormous effort and planning. Yet the joy and pride that came from those moments was incredible.

For me personally, the awards were an opportunity to reflect on how far inked has come. Community services is not a sector where people seek recognition. Most of our team are motivated by the difference they make in someone’s life, whether that is helping an older person get to a medical appointment, supporting a family through a difficult time, or ensuring someone remains connected to their community.

Seeing that work acknowledged publicly was incredibly rewarding and gave our staff and volunteers a real sense of pride. Most importantly, these awards belong to them. They reflect the compassion, professionalism and commitment they bring to our communities every single day.

What struck me most was how much difference the right support could make. When barriers were removed, children flourished, families felt empowered and opportunities opened up. It taught me that inclusion is not about special treatment. It’s about creating access so people can participate in life in the same way everyone else does.

Those experiences gave me a deep appreciation for the role community services play in people’s lives and sparked a passion for creating opportunities for others. As my career progressed, I realised I could create an even greater impact by helping shape the organisations, services and systems that support communities.

medical appointment, supporting a young person to TAFE or reducing social isolation for an older person, our work is ultimately about ensuring people have the opportunity to live independently, remain connected and thrive.

r ani ati n a r n i nificantl from its humble beginnings as a volunteer driven transport service, what are you most proud of when you look at how far Linked has come?

What makes me most proud is that while inked has changed significantly over the past 40 years, we’ve never lost sight of why we were established in the first place.

The organisation was founded by a group of passionate volunteers who recognised that people were missing out on essential services simply because they could not get there. They saw a need and stepped up to help. That spirit of community, care and connection remains at the heart of everything we do today.

Community services is not a sector where people seek recognition. Most of our team are motivated by the difference they make in someone’s life, whether that is helping an older person get to a medical appointment, supporting a family through a difficult time, or ensuring someone remains connected to their community.

Can you tell us a bit about your ac r und and at fir t dr u t the community services sector?

My background is in psychology, and I began my career working with children with autism and their families. ooking back, those early years shaped everything that followed.

I remember working with families who were navigating challenges most people never

When joined inked, I saw an organisation with an incredible history and a powerful purpose. What started almost 40 years ago as a volunteer driven transport service has grown into an organisation helping people stay connected to healthcare, education, social opportunities and their communities.

Nearly eight years later, I still feel privileged to lead inked. Every day see the difference that connection makes in people’s lives. Whether it is helping someone get to a

Of course, the scale is very different now. We’ve grown from a local transport service in the Hastings region into an organisation supporting communities from South West Rocks to Port Stephens and every local government area in between. We now support more than 6,000 people each year, facilitate around 180,000 trips and have expanded our impact through programs such as the Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme, inky ittlies and inked earners.

What I’m most proud of, however, is not the growth itself, t’s the fact that growth has allowed us to help more people.

LINKED COMMUNITY SERVICES

I am also incredibly proud of our people. Today we have a dedicated team of staff, volunteers and leaders who continue to challenge themselves to find better ways of supporting our communities. They are building on the legacy of those original volunteers while helping shape the next chapter of Linked’s story.

When I look at how far we’ve come, I see an organisation that has remained true to its purpose while continuing to evolve to meet the changing needs of regional communities. That’s something everyone who has been part of Linked’s journey should be proud of.

As CEO, no two days are the same. What does a typical day look like for you, and what aspects do you enjoy most?

One of the things I love most about my role is that there really is no such thing as a typical day. I might start the morning reviewing strategy, budgets or new opportunities for growth; spend part of the day meeting with our team, partners or community stakeholders; and finish by discussing a new initiative designed to improve outcomes for the people we support. While the responsibilities of a CEO can be diverse, I try to stay connected to the purpose behind everything we do. Whether we’re developing a new service, supporting our staff and volunteers, or exploring ways to respond to emerging community needs, the focus is always on creating positive impact.

The aspect of the role I enjoy most is the opportunity to bring people together around a shared vision. I love seeing ideas turn into action and watching our team create meaningful change in the lives of others. There is something incredibly rewarding about knowing that decisions made today can help strengthen communities and improve opportunities for people well into the future.

When you’re not at work, what does your ideal day look like?

Whenever I can, I love being outdoors. We have horses, chickens, ducks and a very spoilt French bulldog who all keep us entertained, so spending time with our animals is one of my favourite ways to unwind. ere is something grounding about being outside, whether it’s with the horses, working around the property or simply enjoying time with family.

My life outside of work is wonderfully busy. My husband and I have three young children, so a lot of my time is spent on the sidelines of football fields, at gymnastics, on the boat, or enjoying whatever adventure the kids have planned for the day. Whenever I can, I love being outdoors. We have horses, chickens, ducks and a very spoilt French bulldog who all keep us entertained, so spending time with our animals is one of my favourite ways to unwind. There is something grounding about being outside, whether it’s with the horses, working around the property or simply enjoying time with family. For me, an ideal day is a simple one: being surrounded by the people and animals I love, watching the kids make memories, and enjoying the kind of connection and community that regional living does so well.

Linked will celebrate 40 years of service in 2026, as you look ahead to this anniversary and beyond, what is your vision for the organisation over the next decade?

Reaching 40 years is an incredible milestone and a testament to the vision, commitment and community spirit of everyone who has contributed to Linked’s journey over the past four decades.

As we look ahead, my vision is for Linked to continue evolving as a leading force in community service, creating connected communities where people can thrive. I want us to continue growing our impact, expanding our reach and embracing innovation while staying true to the values and purpose that have guided us since the beginning.

Over the next decade, I see Linked expanding its reach, diversifying its services and continuing to innovate in response to changing community needs. Whether that’s supporting people through transport, aged care, childcare, education or other community services, our focus will remain on helping people access opportunities, maintain independence and strengthen their connection to community.

I also want Linked to continue being recognised as an employer of choice, attracting passionate people who are committed to making a difference and creating opportunities for future leaders to grow within the organisation.

Most importantly, I want Linked to remain an organisation that communities trust. If, ten years from now, more people are connected, more communities are thriving and more lives have been positively impacted because of the work we do, then I believe we will have honoured both our history and our future.

Thanks Carlie.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT GUULABAA

Activities are based around Guulabaa Hub, a series of timber decks that allow visitors to relax and enjoy the forest canopy views. The Hub also provides access to Guulabaa’s visitor experiences.

Families looking for a day out can enjoy a picnic or visit the Bunyah Café (open weekends & school holidays) and meet The Big Koala, a 2.5m-high sculpture painted by Pauline Roods, part of the region’s Hello Koalas Sculpture trail. There are comfortable bushwalks nearby where visitors might see one of the region’s koalas. To guarantee seeing these amazing creatures, book a visit at Koala Conservation Australia’s Wild Koala Breeding Centre Visitor Experience. Here, visitors learn about these shy marsupials while viewing some of the resident koalas. They’ll also meet the carers who rehabilitate sick and injured koalas brought in for treatment.

For those seeking a more active experience, Wildnets Adventure Park offers Australia’s largest suspended playground. With rope- and net-based adventures scaled safely for the ages 3 and up, you can compete challenges, play in the treetops or ride a zipline.

For those just wishing to cool off on a hot day, there’s nothing better than the shaded Guulabaa Cathedral gathering space under the Hub. It’s a bookable function space too, with seating for 100 people (e: visit@fcnsw.com.au).

TEGAN JADE

For Port Macquarie photographer Tegan Jade, photography is about far more than taking beautiful pictures; it's about preserving the connections, emotions and milestones that make up life's most treasured moments. Specialising in families, couples, maternity sessions and intimate weddings, Tegan has built a reputation for creating timeless, heartfelt images that tell a story long a er the moment has passed.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Hi Tegan. What fir t ar d ur a i n f r t ra

My love for photography began at a young age.

My grandfather had an old camera that completely fascinated me, and I was always eager to borrow it when we visited and photograph whatever caught my eye.

While photography had always been an interest of mine, it wasn’t until my partner and I moved to Newcastle for a stint in 2022 that I discovered my true passion for it. Moving to a new town felt overwhelming at times, and I found myself searching for a creative outlet and a way to build connections. Joining several online photography groups allowed me to immerse myself in the photography community, meet like-minded people, and further develop my skills behind the camera. What began as a creative outlet soon evolved into something much more meaningful.

I just love capturing all things love. For me, photography is about preserving the moments that become part of a family's story. The seasons of life we are living in right now often pass by so quickly, and it's not until years later that we realise how valuable those memories are. Whether it's welcoming a new baby, celebrating a wedding or simply documenting a family as they are today, I love creating galleries that allow people to look back and remember exactly how that chapter felt.

uld u d cri ur t ra t l

For me, photography is such a beautiful art form. It’s about seeing emotion and connection in a way that transforms everyday moments into something beautiful.

I love to create images that tell a story, blending both guided moments with the natural in-between interactions that unfold throughout a session.

I would describe my style as timeless and emotive. Within a gallery, I love to create images that tell a story, blending both guided moments with the natural in-between interactions that unfold throughout a session. I work with gentle direction to help couples and families feel comfortable, while also capturing those unplanned, genuine moments that happen along the way. My aim is to create images that feel relaxed, authentic, and full of connection.

an l f l n r u in fr nt f t ca ra d u l ur cli nt f l c f rta l and r la d durin a i n Surprisingly, most people tell me they feel nervous before a photo session, which is completely normal. My goal is to create an experience that feels more like spending time together than being in front of a camera. During a photo session there’s no expectation for you to “perform” or get everything right. As your photographer, it’s my job to guide you through everything so you feel comfortable and supported from start to finish.

I’m also a big personality, and I use that to help people relax, have a laugh, and feel at ease. By focusing on love and connection rather than perfection, people quickly relax, and they usually leave the session feeling confident or full of giggles.

ntinu d r

As a photographer, you're often invited into very personal moments. What does it mean to be trusted with preserving those memories and what do you hope people feel when they look back on their images years later?

Gosh, it’s an incredible privilege. Clients are trusting me to capture some of their most treasured memories, and I don’t take that

responsibility lightly. I’m quite sentimental by nature, so I really feel the weight and meaning behind those moments as I’m capturing them. It’s never just about taking a beautiful image, it’s about preserving a feeling, a connection, and a point in time that will never happen in the same way

again, and that is truly something I hope can be relived and treasured for years to come. Are there particular locations around the Mid North Coast that you love photographing, and what makes them special?

We're fortunate to have so many beautiful venues and locations throughout the Mid North Coast. I especially love photographing along the beaches at sunset, as well as in the

region’s bushland and farmland. These natural landscapes provide such a beautiful, timeless backdrop that really complements the connection between people. I personally love outdoor photo sessions, but honestly wherever a family or couple feels most at home is my favourite. What advice would you give to families or couples preparing for a photo session to help them get the most out of the experience?

Having people believe in your ideas, celebrate your wins and remind you to keep going has meant so much, and I'm so grateful to have that kind of community around me.

In terms of preparing, the best thing you can do is keep things simple. Don’t overthink it or feel like you need to practise anything beforehand. Just come with an open mind and be ready to spend time together. After years of photographing families and couples, I’ve learned that the most beautiful images come when people feel relaxed, connected, and simply present with each other. I encourage you to laugh, play, hold each other close, and just enjoy the time together without worrying about the camera.

Leading up to your wedding day or photo

session, I’m always only one text away if families or couples have any questions, ideas or concerns.

Running a photography business involves wearing many hats. What have been some of the biggest lessons you've learned as a creative entrepreneur?

Running a photography business has taught me that creativity is only one part of the journey. But gosh, it is all exciting. I've been incredibly fortunate to have so much support from family and friends who have encouraged me from the very beginning. Having people believe in your ideas, celebrate your wins and remind you to keep going has meant so much, and I'm so grateful to have that kind of community around me.

I've also learned that you don't need to have everything figured out from the start. As a young business owner, some of the best experiences have come from simply saying yes

to opportunities, staying open to learning and trusting yourself to grow along the way. Most of all, I've learned how much fun it can be to build something you're passionate about. There have been plenty of lessons and challenges, but getting to do meaningful work, meet incredible people and watch both myself and my business evolve has been such a rewarding experience.

Looking ahead, what are your goals for your business, and what kinds of stories are you most excited to continue capturing?

Looking ahead, I hope to continue capturing photographs that feel honest, emotive and fun. My focus is on creating an experience where people feel seen, comfortable and free to simply enjoy the moment, knowing those memories are being preserved in a meaningful way.

As my business grows, I'm especially looking forward to capturing more weddings while continuing to celebrate the everyday moments that matter most.

Thanks Tegan.

Local artist Natalie Middleton, the creative behind Art By Peach, has built a loyal following through her unique blend of resin, acrylic and imagination. She creates distinctive handmade earrings inspired by nature, colour and the beauty of everyday life, bringing a li le extra joy and selfexpression to her customers with every pair.

Hi at at fir t dr u t r in it

r in and acr lic and at t u d n cr atin arrin

I've always loved creating. Before earrings, I spent my time painting, sculpting, lino cutting and trying just about every creative medium I could get my hands on. Art was always my favourite subject at school, and I was lucky to have a fantastic teacher, Ms Rowe at CHHS who encouraged me to keep exploring and creating. What began in 2020, fresh out of school, started on the kitchen table and slowly spread to every spare surface in the house before eventually evolving into a dedicated studio space in the spare room.

I never imagined that something I started after work and on weekends would connect with so many people. Being featured feels incredibly special because it's a reminder that creativity doesn't need to be your full-time job to have an impact.

I love that a favourite pair of earrings can make someone feel confident, empowered or simply brighten their day. My first customers and biggest fans were my Mum and sisters, and seeing them wear something I'd made was incredibly special. Not long after, attended my first market in Laurieton in 2021. It was a huge step for someone who is quite shy, but it opened the door to sharing my love of colour and creativity with the community.

My first customers and biggest fans were my Mum and sisters, and seeing them wear something I’d made was incredibly special. Not long a er, I a ended my first market in Laurieton in 2021.

animals, fruit, celestial elements and interesting colour combinations all find their way into my work. Living on the Mid North Coast provides endless inspiration, whether that's through our beaches, wildlife, bushland or simply noticing the colours around me.

uld u d cri ur arti tic t l and at t ar u t dra n t in ur r

I'd describe my style as colourful, playful and a little whimsical.

find inspiration everywhere - nature, flowers,

One of the things I hear most often at markets is that my work is colourful and unique, and I love that. I think colour has an incredible ability to create joy and spark emotion. I enjoy creating pieces that make an impression and encourage people to express their personality. At the heart of it all, I believe there is beauty everywhere if you take the time to notice it. My work is really about celebrating those little things and turning them into wearable art. ntinu d r

Walk us through your creative process. Ideas can come from anywhere. Sometimes it’s something I’ve seen while out exploring, and other times inspiration strikes while I’m sitting at my desk surrounded by materials and halffinished projects artists know the struggle of never ending half-finished ideas .

I usually start with a sketch, whether that’s on paper or in my notes app. From there ’ll refine the design on my iPad before turning it into a vector file in llustrator ready for laser cutting. spend a lot of time considering how the piece will sit and move when worn, often printing to-scale paper prototypes and holding them up to make sure the size and proportions feel right.

My favourite stage is prototyping. Seeing a design come to life for the first time is always exciting. There is plenty of trial and error involved, but that’s all part of the process. Some ideas never make it past the sketch stage, while others evolve unexpectedly. My recent Turtle Vacation earrings actually came from experimenting with pieces from different designs and discovering they worked beautifully together.

What do you enjoy most about resin, and

what challenges does it present? esin definitely requires patience. Temperature, humidity, mixing ratios and curing conditions all play a role in the final result, so there are lots of variables to consider.

I use resin in my gli ery studs, which are incredibly popular at markets. I love experimenting with different gli er combinations, colours and effects to create something special.

I've been working with resin for over six years now, and every mistake along the way has taught me something valuable. What I love most is the ability to create completely unique one of a kind pieces. No two resin pours are ever exactly the same, which means every piece has its own character. I use resin in my glittery studs, which are incredibly popular at markets. I love experimenting with different glitter combinations, colours and effects to create something special. People often tell me they resemble opals because of the way they catch and reflect the light. While the process can

be time-consuming, seeing the finished pieces come together makes it incredibly rewarding. What does it feel like seeing people wearing your creations?

It's one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

I often have customers return to markets wearing earrings they've purchased previously, and I absolutely love seeing that. It makes me so happy knowing that something I've created has become part of their collection and brings them joy.

especially enjoy seeing people step outside their comfort zone. Sometimes customers aren't sure if they can pull off bright colours

or whimsical designs, but when they put them on, their whole face lights up. Hearing about the compliments they've received or how much they love wearing them makes all the hard work very worthwhile.

More than anything, I hope my earrings help people feel confident, inspired and comfortable expressing themselves.

How has your artistic style evolved over the years?

When first started, worked mostly with resin using molds and simple shapes. Over time, I've developed my own design style, taught myself new skills and now work predominantly with laser-cut acrylic, creating original layered pieces that allow for much more detail and creativity.

I've become more confident experimenting with colour combinations, materials and techniques. I still use resin regularly, particularly in my stud collections, but I love combining different mediums to create unique pieces.

Lately

I’ve been exploring ways to combine acrylic, resin and stainless steel metal elements to add even more depth and detail to my designs.

My branding has evolved alongside my work too. I recently launched a new logo that better reflects the colourful, playful and slightly celestial nature of ArtByPeach. Looking back, it's exciting to see how both my work and confidence as an artist have grown over the years.

What are you excited to explore next?

I love to experiment and learn new things, this

is one of my favourite parts of being creative.

Lately I've been exploring ways to combine acrylic, resin and stainless steel metal elements to add even more depth and detail to my designs. I've also been asked to collaborate with another local artist on some necklace designs, which is something completely new and out of my comfort zone.

Beyond creating, I'm looking forward to attending more markets across the Mid North Coast and continuing to grow my online presence.

Meeting other artists and connecting with

new customers at different locations is always inspiring.

MoreThan Organising CreatingCalm, Suportive HomesThat Support YourLife

A home should feel calm, functional and supportive of the life you want to live. Yet for many people, clutter, disorganisation and major life transitions can leave them feeling overwhelmed, stressed and unsure where to begin.

At Living Happy, I work alongside clients to create practical, personalised systems that make everyday life easier. Whether you're downsizing, unpacking after a move, managing a busy family home, or simply feeling overwhelmed by clutter, my goal is to help you create spaces that truly work for you.

Organising is about far more than tidy cupboards and labelled containers. Research shows that organised environments can reduce stress, improve focus, support wellbeing and help people feel more in control of their daily lives.

I understand the emotional side of clutter too. Many possessions carry memories, responsibilities or difficult decisions. That’s why every session is approached with compassion, patience and without judgement.

Using practical organising strategies, gentle decluttering methods and principles inspired by Feng Shui, I help clients create homes that feel lighter, calmer and easier to maintain.

Because a well-organised home isn’t just about how it looks, it’s about how it makes you feel.

LIVING HAPPY

For many of us, our homes and workspaces are direct reflections of our inner worlds. When life gets overwhelming, schedulepacked, or upended by major transitions, our physical environments o en bear the brunt, leaving us feeling stuck in a cycle of visual clu er and mental exhaustion. Enter Sol, the compassionate and deeply intuitive force behind Living Happy Professional Organiser.

Hello, Sol. You are the owner and operator of Living Happy Professional Organiser, tell us about yourself and what inspired you to start Living Happy?

Living Happy Professional Organiser was born from my passion for helping people and a natural ability and love for having everything organised. By combining both, I help clients create homes and workspaces that truly support their wellbeing and everyday life. Originally from Brazil, I moved to Australia over 12 years ago and experienced firsthand how overwhelming major life transitions can be. One of the most challenging times for me was becoming a mum without family nearby or a strong support network. I remember feeling overwhelmed by the demands of motherhood, home life and everyday responsibilities, which gave me a deep understanding of how easily life can feel out of control during certain seasons. Over the years, I realised that many people aren’t struggling because they’re lazy or disorganised, they’re often juggling busy lives, family responsibilities, work pressures, health challenges or significant life changes. ’ve always loved creating order and practical systems, but what inspired me to start Living Happy was seeing

the impact an organised environment can have on someone’s wellbeing. I wanted to provide a service that was supportive, compassionate and free from judgement, helping people create spaces that feel calm, functional and easier to manage.

have invested significant time in professional training, completing multiple professional organising courses and continually expanding my knowledge through books and ongoing learning. This has strengthened my understanding that every client is different, and that creating personalised systems is key to helping clients maintain lasting results.

Today, I help clients declutter, organise, downsize, unpack and create spaces that genuinely support the way they want to live.

An organised space isn’t just visually pleasing, but it actually reduces stress and boosts mental clarity. How have you seen a ical tran f r ati n in a r ffic radically shift a client’s wellbeing? I’ve seen clients become emotional after finally walking into a room that no longer causes them stress or anxiety. When clutter is removed, and practical systems are put in place, people often experience a sense of relief, clarity and renewed energy. Many clients tell me they sleep better, feel less overwhelmed and are more productive because they’re no longer constantly confronted by visual

clutter or unfinished tasks. What often surprises them is the ripple effect. As their environment becomes calmer and more functional, they feel motivated and empowered to make positive changes in other areas of their home and life.

I’ve worked with clients who avoided certain rooms in their home because they felt too overwhelmed to deal with them. Once those spaces were transformed, they were able to enjoy and use their homes again. Seeing the shift from chaos and frustration to peace, calm and pride in their space is incredibly powerful. It’s incredibly rewarding to witness that emotional transformation and see people regain a sense of control, confidence and happiness in their environment.

How do you build trust so quickly and ensure your clients feel completely safe and judgement-free from day one?

Trust is at the heart of everything I do. Many people feel embarrassed about asking for help with their home or workspace, but I remind clients that everyone has different challenges and circumstances, and my role is never to judge, it’s to support.

I take the time to listen, understand their goals and work at a pace that feels comfortable for them. Every decision remains with the client, and I respect that belongings often carry memories, emotions and significant life stories. By

approaching each session with empathy, patience and genuine care, clients quickly realise they’re in a safe space where they can be honest and supported throughout the process. Your service offerings are beautifully holistic because you don’t just handle decluttering and downsizing; you also integrate Feng Shui and Business/Admin Support. How do these different skills complement each other to create harmony for your clients?

Decluttering and organising creates practical systems that make daily life easier, more efficient and less stressful. Feng Shui adds another layer by considering how the layout, energy and flow of a space can influence our wellbeing, helping create environments that feel more balanced, supportive and meaningful. I would often walk into a room and instinctively feel that a different furniture arrangement would improve the space's flow and functionality. Wanting to understand why, completed a Certificate in Feng hui and discovered there was much more to it than just furniture placement. My background in business, finance and administration also enables me to support workplaces and small businesses with the same focus on organisation and efficiency. My background in business, finance and administration also enables me to support workplaces and small businesses with the same focus on organisation and efficiency. Whether it’s streamlining processes, improving organisation or creating more effective systems, the goal is always to reduce stress and improve functionality.

You work with a lot of people undergoing major life transitions, what is the biggest hurdle people face when trying to let go of things, and how do you help them navigate it?

The biggest hurdle is rarely the item itself, it’s the emotion attached to it. Many possessions represent memories, relationships, achievements or aspirations. Letting go can feel like losing a part of your story.

Rather than focusing on what clients should get rid of, I help them focus on what they want to keep and how they want their home to function moving forward. We work through decisions together, breaking the process into manageable steps. My role is to guide and support clients in honouring their memories while creating space for the next chapter of their lives.

What is your secret to helping clients maintain that simplicity and functionality l n aft r u fini d r in together?

The secret is to create systems tailored to the individual rather than trying to force a one-sizefits-all solution.

Every home, family, and lifestyle is different, so I design practical, realistic, and easy-to-maintain systems tailored to each client. The goal isn’t perfection, it’s sustainability. I also focus on educating clients so they understand why a system works and feel confident maintaining it independently.

If there is just one core message or feeling you want people to associate with Living Happy, what would that be and what’s the best way to get in touch with you?

If there’s one feeling I want people to associate with Living Happy, it’s relief. Relief from overwhelm, relief from clutter, and relief from feeling like everything is resting on your shoulders.

Everyone deserves a home that feels calm, functional and supportive. Creating an organised home isn’t about perfection, it’s about creating a space that supports your wellbeing and makes everyday life easier.

My goals are to create a safe and supportive experience where my clients feel heard, understood and respected throughout the process and to know they are not alone, and that it’s okay to ask for help.

f you’re ready to simplify your home, office or business, and create systems that truly work for you, I’d love to help.

WOLFE THE BROTHERS

HA er an 18-month break from touring, Australia’s most awarded country rock group is back on the road with their Australian Made tour. Ahead of their upcoming show at Panthers Port Macquarie on August 8, we caught up with Nick Wolfe to talk about the band’s latest album, life on the road, and why staying true to their Australian roots has never been more important.

i Nick. The Wolfe Brothers are heading back on the road after an 18-month break from touring, you’ve said that being on stage is where you feel most alive, what is it about performing live that keeps drawing you back?

For me, it’s the final stage of the whole process. ou write the songs, go through the recording process, put so much into creating the album, and then eventually you get to play those songs live for people who might have had the album for a while and made it part of their lives. etting to share those moments with audiences is what it’s all about for us. We’ve always prided ourselves on being a great live band, and honestly, we just have so much fun doing it. t’s a bit ridiculous that we get to call this our job. We absolutely love it. This album celebrates Australian stories, landscapes and communities. Why was it important to create a record that feels distinctly Australian?

our reach, but we felt strongly about it. That’s who we are and where we’re from. We wanted to make a record about our lives, our communities and the places that mean something to us.

The response has been incredible. People really connect with songs about Australian experiences because they’re authentic. We’d rather sing about our real lives than try to write about places and experiences that aren’t ours.

We’ve always thought country music was cool, and now it feels like the rest of the world has caught up. You’re hearing country music on mainstream radio, stadiums are selling out, and the festivals are ge ing bigger every year.

Country music is having a real boom at the moment, which is fantastic. We’ve always thought country music was cool, and now it feels like the rest of the world has caught up. ou’re hearing country music on mainstream radio, stadiums are selling out, and the festivals are getting bigger every year.

A lot of that has been driven by international country music, particularly from America, which we’ve always loved. But for us, country music has always been about honesty and telling real stories about real life. Our real life is Australia.

We were actually advised against calling the album Australian Made. ome people thought it might limit

You and Tom have spent more than a decade building The Wolfe Brothers into one of Australia’s most successful country rock acts. Looking back, what moments stand out as major turning points in that journey?

Music is all we’ve ever done. We grew up in a musical family and were playing together from a young age, whether it was cover bands, original bands or whatever we could get involved in.

The biggest turning point was probably Australia’s ot Talent back in 20 2. We actually went on the show pretty reluctantly. We’d built a loyal following in Tasmania, but we were struggling to break through nationally.

The show gave us the chance to perform original songs to a national primetime audience, and for us it was a fantastic experience. From there we signed with ABC Music, connected with the management team we’re still with today, and ee ernaghan saw us on the show.

Continued over...

We ended up touring with ee for close to a decade, which was the best apprenticeship we could have asked for as an Australian country music act. We’ve worked very hard, but we’ve also had some good fortune along the way. We’re incredibly grateful for everything that’s happened.

B R O T H E R S

You remained busy throughout 2025 playing festivals while also writing and recording new music. How do you balance life on the road with the creative process?

t’s definitely a balancing act. find need to get myself into a writing frame of mind and almost force myself to sit down and write, whether the songs end up being any good or not.

Once you’re in that creative zone, though, you start hearing things differently. People say things every day that could be amazing song lyrics if you’re paying attention. t’s about being open, noticing those moments and writing them down.

We tend to collect ideas and let them sit for a while before developing them. also love co-writing. We’ve built relationships with some great songwriters over the years, and it’s amazing what can happen when you bring together different perspectives and life experiences around one idea.

The Wolfe Brothers have built a reputation for high-energy live shows. What can audiences in Port Macquarie expect when they see the Australian Made tour?

ots of energy and lots of fun

We know times are tough and the cost of living is affecting everyone. When people come to a show, we want it to be an escape. We want them to forget about the world for a couple of hours, let loose and have a great time.

One thing we’ve been doing on this tour that’s been really enjoyable is including a special segment where we play a deep cut from our catalogue. We’ve got seven albums now, so there are plenty of songs that we don’t usually get to perform.

We’ve been asking fans on social media which songs they’d love to hear, and we’ve challenged ourselves not to repeat the same song throughout the entire tour. We’re only a handful of shows in and we’ve already dusted off songs we haven’t played for years.

t’s been a challenge remembering some of the lyrics, but it’s also reminded us how much certain songs mean to people. t’s really special to give those songs another run.

Regional Australia has always embraced country music. What do you enjoy most about performing in communities like these along the Mid North Coast?

We’ve been asking fans on social media which songs they’d love to hear, and we’ve challenged ourselves not to repeat the same song throughout the entire tour. We’re only a handful of shows in and we’ve already dusted o songs we haven’t played for years.

We love it. A lot of tours these days focus on major cities, but country music belongs in regional Australia. t’s important to get out to those communities and play for people who don’t always get access to big concerts and events.

Don’t get me wrong, we love the big festivals and the big city shows, but we get just as much enjoyment playing in regional towns. That’s really what it’s all about for us.

After so many years performing together, what continues to motivate you to push forward and create new music, and what’s still on the horizon for The Wolfe

Brothers do you think?

t’s funny because after seven albums you start wondering whether you’ve covered every topic already.

Earlier this year we did a writing trip and came away with a collection of songs that we’re really excited about. onestly, we think we’ve already got the foundations of the next album. ow it’s about choosing the very best songs and getting into the studio to record them.

We’ve also got a new single coming out soon, which we’re excited about.

At the end of the day, we just love making music. We have an amazing team around us, and life on the road feels like being with family. t’s still pretty surreal that this is our job, travelling around the country with your mates, playing music you love and meeting great people along the way.

As long as we can keep doing it, we will. We absolutely love it.

Thanks guys.

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY at Panthers Port Macquarie

ETHAN SMITH

There is something undeniably special about a traditional local butchery. In a world of pre-packaged supermarket shelves, Port Meat Centre in Port Macquarie stands out as a beacon of quality, community, and old-school service. We sat down with the owner to chat about his journey from a schoolaged wash-up kid to running one of the region’s favorite meat hubs, the secret to sourcing the perfect cut, and what you should be cooking this winter.

PORT MEAT CENTRE

How did your journey into the world of butchering begin?

Butchering for me started while I was still at school.

I was working weekends and afternoons as a wash-up kid, doing the heavy cleaning and learning the ropes from the ground up. Very quickly, I realised I was spending all my time at school thinking about the shop. I became far more interested in the craft of butchering, learning the cuts, and mastering the knife than I ever was with exams or homework. There was a tangible reward in working with your hands and learning a trade, and I knew early on that this was my calling.

How did Port Meat Centre come to be?

What made you decide to take the leap into ownership, and what was your vision for the shop?

This specific location has a rich history, it has actually been a functioning butchery for decades. When we noticed that the building was sitting empty, the spark for Port Macquarie Meat Centre was born. We looked at the space and saw immense potential. It is in an ideal location with plenty of parking, which is crucial to cater to the fast-growing population of Port Macquarie. People want convenience, but they don't want to sacrifice quality. My vision was to create a modern, spacious shop that could accommodate a massive, wide-ranging selection of premium products, while keeping that traditional, welcoming neighbourhood vibe alive.

You have a fantastic team working with you each day, can you introduce them to us?

A butcher shop is nothing without the energy behind the counter, and I’m incredibly lucky. Our team consists of Caleb, Ben, and Daniel. They are a great, fun group of guys who show up every day ready to work hard and keep the atmosphere lively. Whether they are prepping the display cases, helping customers with cooking tips, or having a laugh behind

the scenes, they make the shop a great place to be. We operate like a family, and that positive energy translates directly into how we treat our customers.

What does a typical day look like for you?

It’s a demanding routine, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. A typical day revolves around early starts and late finishes. We are up before the sun to receive fresh deliveries, break down carcasses, and ensure the display cabinets look immaculate before the first customer walks through the door. The days are long and physical, filled with constant movement and customer service. Because the week is so intense, Sundays are incredibly important to me, that’s my time for rest, family, and church on Sunday to reset for the week ahead. Sourcing is incredibly important to consumers today, how do you select the meat that makes it into your display cases?

In short, it’s a one-stop shop for all your meat and poultry needs. We really do have it all, from everyday staples to premium, specialty cuts.

What truly sets us apart is our environment and our attitude. We have fostered a fun, supportive, and encouraging work environment, which naturally flows over to the retail side. Our customer service is second to none, we greet people by name, offer custom cuts, and give genuine cooking advice. Pair that with a variety that has no limits, and you get an experience you just can't find at a major grocery chain.

We are up before the sun to receive fresh deliveries, break down carcasses, and ensure the display cabinets look immaculate before the first customer walks through the door.

We take sourcing very seriously because our customers trust us to put the best on their family tables.

Beef & Pork: We source all of our carcass meat locally. Supporting our local farmers is a core value of ours; it keeps the community strong and ensures the meat hasn't traveled thousands of kilometres.

Lamb: Our lamb comes from Cowra, which is widely renowned for producing some of the finest, most tender lamb in the country. When we are selecting our products, we look for three non-negotiables: colour, marbling, and texture. The meat has to have the right vibrant colour, excellent intramuscular fat marbling for maximum flavour and tenderness, and a firm, high-quality texture.

How would you describe Port Meat Centre, and what sets your service apart?

If someone has never stepped foot into Port Meat Centre before, what is the one signature item they absolutely u t tr fir t

Without a doubt, our sausages. We pride ourselves on our house-made sausages. We use high-quality ingredients, traditional techniques, and great flavour profiles. They’re a true crowdpleaser and the perfect benchmark for the quality of the rest of our shop.

July is prime time for comfort food. What are the ultimate go-to cuts you’re recommending to customers right now?

Winter is the best time of year for cooking, and right now we are steering customers towards hearty, slow-cooking classics. Our top three recommendations this July are:

Chuck Steak: Perfect for rich, slow-simmered beef stews where the meat just melts apart.

Osso Bucco: The marrow bone gives incredible depth to Italian-style braises.

Sunday Lamb Leg Roast: Nothing beats a classic, comforting roast lamb with the family on a cold weekend evening.

Thanks Ethan.

Osso Bucolassic

PREP TIME: 25 MINS

COOK TIME: 2.5 TO 3 HOURS

SERVINGS: 4

Ingredients

The Braise:

4 thick-cut Osso Buco shanks (sourced fresh from Port Meat Centre)

2 tbsp olive oil

50g unsalted butter

large yellow onion, finely diced

2 medium carrots, finely diced

2 celery stalks, finely diced

3 cloves garlic, minced

2 tbsp tomato paste

1 cup dry white wine (or dry red for a deeper, heavier sauce)

1 cup quality beef or veal stock

1 can (400g) crushed San Marzano tomatoes

2 bay leaves

3 sprigs fresh thyme

All-purpose flour for dredging

Salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste

The Gremolata (The Essential Finish):

2 cup fresh talian flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped

tbsp lemon zest, finely grated

1 clove garlic, minced

Method

Prep the Meat: Pat the shanks completely dry with paper towels. Season generously with salt and pepper on all sides. Lightly dredge each shank in flour, shaking off any excess.

Chef's Tip: Tie a piece of kitchen twine securely around the circumference of each shank. This stops the meat from falling off the bone during its long journey to tenderness.

The Sear: Heat the olive oil and butter in a large, heavy-bottomed Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the shanks and sear until a deep, goldenbrown crust forms (about 4–5 minutes per side). Do not rush this step; that crust equals pure flavour. emove the shanks and set them aside.

Build the Aromatics: Lower the heat to medium. Add the diced onion, carrots, and celery (your soffritto) to the same pot. Sauté for about 6–8 minutes until soft and translucent, scraping up the delicious browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Stir in the minced garlic and tomato paste, cooking for another 2 minutes until the paste darkens.

Deglaze: Pour in the white wine, using a wooden spoon to vigorously scrape the bottom of the pan. Let the wine simmer and reduce by half.

The Braise Begins: Pour in the crushed tomatoes and stock. Stir well, then nestle the seared shanks back into the liquid along with any resting juices. Add the bay leaves and thyme. The liquid should come about threequarters of the way up the meat. Bring to a gentle simmer.

Low and Slow: Cover the Dutch oven with a tight-fitting lid. Transfer to a preheated oven at 160°C (or leave it on the stovetop on a very low whisper of a simmer) for 2.5 to 3 hours.

The Gremolata: While the meat rests, toss the chopped parsley, lemon zest, and minced garlic together in a small bowl.

How to Serve: Serve the Osso Buco piping hot over a bed of creamy saffron risotto isotto alla Milanese or a decadent polenta. Spoon a generous amount of the rich pan sauce over the top, and finish with a bright sprinkle of the fresh gremolata.

Season

Mandarins

As winter settles in across Australia, there is one fruit that truly comes into its own. Bright, sweet, easy to peel and packed with flavour, mandarins are undoubtedly one of the highlights of the season. While summer may get all the attention with mangoes, cherries and stone fruit, many fruit lovers would argue that winter belongs to the humble mandarin.

Every year, as the temperatures drop, Australian mandarin growers begin harvesting some of the sweetest fruit of the year. Cool nights and sunny days create the perfect growing conditions, allowing the fruit to develop its characteristic sweetness while maintaining the refreshing citrus flavour that makes mandarins so popular.

One of the reasons mandarins remain a favourite among Australian families is their convenience. nlike many fruits, they require no preparation, no cutting and no washing when you're on the go. Simply peel and enjoy. They fit perfectly into lunchboxes, sports bags, work lunches or afternoon snacks, making them one of the easiest healthy options available.

Mandarins are often referred to as nature's perfect snack, and for good reason. They are naturally rich in vitamin C, contain dietary fibre and provide a sweet treat without the need

for processed sugars. During winter, when coughs, colds and flu become more common, many Australians naturally increase their intake of citrus fruits. While no fruit is a magic cure, the vitamin C found in mandarins certainly contributes to maintaining a healthy immune system.

Many shoppers are surprised to learn there is more than one variety of mandarin available throughout the season. Early in the season, mperial mandarins are often the first to arrive. Easily recognised by their loose skin and easypeeling nature, mperials have been a favourite for generations. As the season progresses, varieties such as Afourer, Murcott and oney Murcott begin appearing. These later varieties are often slightly firmer, incredibly sweet and contain excellent eating quality.

At Growers Market, we often hear customers asking how to choose the best mandarins. The answer is surprisingly simple. Look for fruit that feels heavy for its size, has bright colour and firm skin. A heavier mandarin generally contains more juice, which usually means better eating quality. Minor marks on the skin are often nothing to worry about and rarely affect the flavour inside.

Another benefit of mandarins is their versatility. While most people enjoy them fresh, they can also be used in a variety of recipes. Segments can be added to salads for a burst of sweetness, blended into smoothies, used

in desserts or even paired with roast meats to create delicious winter meals. Their natural sweetness complements both savoury and sweet dishes.

Australia produces some of the finest mandarins in the world. Growing regions across New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia all contribute to supplying quality fruit throughout winter. Thanks to these diverse growing regions, Australian consumers can enjoy fresh mandarins for many months of the year.

Perhaps the greatest appeal of mandarins is the simple enjoyment they bring. There is something nostalgic about peeling a mandarin on a cold winter morning. The fresh citrus aroma instantly fills the air and the bright orange colour provides a welcome reminder that warmer days are never too far away. For many Australians, winter simply wouldn't feel the same without them.

As we move through uly and into the heart of winter, now is the perfect time to make the most of mandarin season. Whether you're packing school lunches, looking for a healthy snack, boosting your fruit intake or simply enjoying some of Australia's best seasonal produce, mandarins deserve a place in your shopping basket.

Sweet, juicy, nutritious and proudly Australian, it's no surprise that mandarins have earned their reputation as Australia's winter gold.

GETTING CASUAL

Ever since the dawn of the restaurant, there has been a clear line in the sand when it comes to the concept of informal/formal dining.

Cue back to Ancient Rome and Greece, where the concept of what we now know as fine dining was already clearly underway in the form of elaborate banquets, multi-course tasting menus, fine wine service, highly performative food service and coveted luxury ingredients apparently flamingo tongue was highly regarded . Ordinary citizens back then ate quickly and simply, with rustic fare such as bread, cheese, olives and beans being central. Meals were often communal and there were basic restaurants serving up prepared hot food in an early version of the fast-food movement.

The elaborate rituals which are now still a hallmark of fine dining were way more powerfully linked to social hierarchy, status and power than they are today. Elite dining involved a level of excess beyond anything we know of currently and was a dramatic way of highlighting social divisions.

Since then, the concept of Fine Dining has evolved through the ages from a concept only available to those with considerable wealth, aristocratic status and political power to a

commercial market driven dining option. This shift occurred in th century France, opening up restaurants to the general public - and led to the development of Haute Cuisine, where the modern kitchen brigade of cheffing began, and still remains in place today.

Fashions and fads of cuisine, service and restaurant ambience have come and gone from then until now, but the basic premise that marks a clear delineation between formal and informal dining has remained constant.

Until now….

The past few years have no doubt taken their toll on the restaurant industry, particularly at the very top tier. Economic instability, CO D, rising costs, staff shortages, harsh reviews, and jaded diners spoilt for choice with restaurants battling for their share of bums on seats have made it harder and harder to keep afloat.

ence the past few years have seen a plethora of closures of fine dining restaurants around the world from world leaders in innovative cuisine - Noma, on to our doorstep earlier this year with the iconic Quay where chef for the past 2 years Peter ilmore cited economic pressure, changing dining preferences and a lower international patronage since CO D as central to the decision.

Does all of this signal the end of Fine Dining as we know it? Have the complexities and

Palate

challenges of our ever-changing world led to the demise of an institution that has existed for thousands of years

s it a side effect of our tech obsession that we no longer have the capacity, attention span or the sense of wonder required to immerse ourselves in such a grand gesture as fine dining After all we’ve seen it all on insta before. Let alone the coin in our purses… There’s one thing we want now and it’s not to be confined to a white clothed table for five hours being dictated to what to eat and how. As the legendary chef Marco Pierre White reflected recently don’t want to go to a restaurant where ’m having amount of course, no choice. ’m told what every dish is, how should eat it, then a minute later ’m asked if enjoy it. And this When open up menus now, can smell the accountant’s fingers. There’s no romance .

Whether you agree with this or not, there’s no denying that as the world changes and the pace of life gets ever faster, most of us are looking for version of flexibility when it comes to our leisure time, and also to the bottom line.

t’s time for our industry to get creative in this brave new world. As long as we can keep our doors open, celebrate great food and beverage we’re on the right track.

TIME

I realised relatively young that winemaking was something I wanted to pursue seriously.

At first, didn't think had what it took to be a good winemaker, but my parents helped me get work experience away from home and to learn from other winemakers. remember being interested in what my father was doing from a very young age, and he helped me get some incredible work experience opportunities both here in Australia and also in France.

You have to be quick on your feet as a winemaker because you’re dealing with a natural product and it’s situation can change quickly, and at any time.

My formal winemaking education began at urri urri TAFE, where studied an Advanced Diploma of iticulture. After several vintages in Tasmania at Tamar idge, completed a double degree in

iticulture and Oenology at the niversity of Adelaide in 20 . also got a lot of handson experience at Tyrrells in the unter alley, Chateau uiraud in France, and at Taransaud barrel cooperage in Cognac. oughly 0 of my learning was onthe-job experience, with the rest being theory. My on-the-job experience helped me learn what to do, whereas the formal training helped me learn what not to do, by giving the explanation and the science behind each step. earning the skill of winemaking is a mixture of instinct vs technique. consider instinct to make up around 0 of my approach. ronically, a skill had not anticipated would need to learn, was anticipation. My father's motto

of maintain a sense of urgency has stuck with me. ou have to be quick on your feet as a winemaker because you're dealing with a natural product and it's situation can change quickly, and at any time. There is no amount of planning or forward thinking that ever feels like 'enough.'

am not making wine all the time though. Outside of the main harvest period, such as this time of year, am regularly in contact with the farmers who grow our fruit, as plan for the next harvest, as well as prepping early bottling whites, analysing sales data, and forecasting based on popularity trends. My duties include overseeing the making and bottling of wine, the warehousing and stock management of our products, and the wineries gardens and facilities. love the variety these responsibilities give me, but my core passion is winemaking.

DAMON RUSSELL

e Port Macquarie Maroro Outrigger Canoe Club has been introducing locals to the unique sport of outrigger canoeing for more than 22 years. As the club prepares to launch its first sixweek beginner program this July, Vice President Damon Russell shares the story behind the club’s growth and why there’s never been a be er time to get out on the water and give paddling a try.

Hi Damon. The Port Macquarie Maroro Outrigger Canoe Club has been part of the local community for more than two decades now, can you tell us a little about the club’s journey since its beginnings in 2004?

The Port Macquarie Maroro Outrigger Canoe Club (PMMOCC) was established in 2004 with the support and guidance of the Coffs Coast Outrigger Canoe Club. The club started with just a handful of paddlers and a borrowed canoe, but a shared passion for the sport quickly laid the foundations for a club that has now been part of the Port Macquarie community for more than 22 years.

Over that time, hundreds of paddlers have found their way to Maroro; some through friends, some after spotting our canoes on the Hastings River, and others by simply turning up to a Sunday social paddle.

From those humble beginnings with a borrowed canoe, we've grown into a club with a diverse fleet and a strong paddling culture that welcomes everyone, from complete beginners to competitive racers. Today, we continue to provide opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy paddling for fitness, recreation,

friendship and competition.

While membership numbers have fluctuated over the years, we currently have more than 20 active members and are excited about the future. We're particularly looking forward to launching our first six-week ntroduction to Outrigger Canoeing program on 26 uly, which we hope will introduce a whole new generation of local paddlers to this unique sport and help continue the Maroro story for many years to come.

For readers who may never have seen an outrigger canoe race, how would you describe the sport and what makes it so unique?

Outrigger canoeing is a team paddling sport with its origins in the Polynesian cultures of the Pacific. The canoes are fitted with an outrigger float, known as an ama, which provides stability on the water.

What makes the sport unique is the combination of teamwork, fitness, culture and connection with the ocean. n a six-person canoe, every paddler has a role to play and success depends on working together in rhythm. Whether you're paddling on a calm river or racing in ocean conditions, there is a real sense of unity, achievement and respect for the traditions that have shaped the sport over thousands of years. The waters around Port Macquarie provide

a spectacular backdrop for paddling. What is it like training and competing on the Hastings River and along the local coastline?

We are incredibly fortunate to paddle in one of the most beautiful locations in Australia.

The Hastings River provides ideal conditions for learning and training, while the local coastline offers a completely different experience with ocean swells, sea breezes and stunning scenery.

One day you might be paddling alongside dolphins in the river, and the next you could be training in the open ocean. The variety of conditions keeps the sport exciting and gives our members a real appreciation for the natural environment we enjoy every week.

Many people are looking for ways to stay active without the impact of traditional sports, what makes outrigger canoeing such an acc i l fitn ti n

Outrigger canoeing is a low-impact, full-body workout that can be adapted to suit a wide range of fitness levels. nlike running or many field sports, there is minimal impact on the joints, making it suitable for people of all ages.

The sport improves cardiovascular fitness, strength, flexibility and balance while allowing participants to exercise in a supportive team environment. One of the great things about paddling is that you can work at your own level

PORT MACQUARIE MARORO OUTRIGGER CANOE CLUB

while still being part of a crew. Many people are surprised at how quickly they build fitness, confidence and friendships without feeling like they're stuck in a gym.

How would you describe the culture of the Port Macquarie Maroro Outrigger Canoe Club and the sense of community among members?

The culture of our club is built around friendship, teamwork, respect and inclusiveness. While some members enjoy competing at regattas and national events, many simply paddle for fitness, wellbeing and the enjoyment of being out on the water.

We often say that people join for the paddling but stay for the friendships. One of the things that makes our club special is that everyone supports each other, regardless of age, experience or ability. There is a genuine sense of community both on and off the water, and new members are always made to feel welcome. What would you say to someone who is curious about giving it a try but feels intimidated?

Don't be intimidated, we all started as beginners. ou don't need any previous paddling experience, and you certainly don't need to be super fit before you start. Our coaches and experienced paddlers will guide you through

everything you need to know in a safe and supportive environment. The hardest part is often just turning up for the first time, but once people get on the water they quickly realise how welcoming and enjoyable the sport can be.

Most people are surprised by how quickly they feel part of the team. Above all, we want people to have fun and discover why so many of us love being out on the water.

For anyone considering trying something new, what can they expect when they come al n t t ir fir t addl it t clu

New paddlers can expect a warm welcome and a relaxed introduction to the sport. We'll provide the equipment, explain the basics of paddling technique and safety, and pair them with experienced paddlers who can help them throughout the session.

Most people are surprised by how quickly they feel part of the team. Above all, we want people to have fun and discover why so many of us love being out on the water.

r can find ut r r t in touch?

Anyone interested in learning more about the club can visit our website at https outriggerclub.com.au where you'll find information about paddling, membership and

upcoming activities. You are also welcome to visit us at the Marina on a Sunday morning from 0am and have a chat with one of our paddlers. Our Sunday social paddles are a great opportunity to meet members, learn more about the sport and see what outrigger canoeing is all about.

This year, we're excited to launch our first ntroduction to Outrigger Canoeing program, a six-week beginner-friendly course commencing on Sunday 26 July. The program has been designed for people who are completely new to the sport, as well as those who may have paddled in the past and would like to get back on the water. Participants will learn the fundamentals of paddling, safety, teamwork and canoe handling in a supportive and welcoming environment.

Whether you're looking for fitness, friendship, adventure, or simply an opportunity to try something different, we'd love to welcome you to Maroro and share our passion for outrigger canoeing.

Thanks Damon.

PAULINE CHAPMAN

Recently, local icon Pauline Chapman was o cially recognised in Parliament by Member for Port Macquarie, Rob Dwyer, for her outstanding contribution to the community as our Local Citizen of the Year. We pulled up a stool with Pauline to chat about dairy farming history, a trailblazing career in banking, and the power of giving back.

As a long-time resident of beautiful Rawdon Island, did u fir t c t call it and at can you tell us about your family roots there? Rawdon Island is truly in my blood. I was born right there into a local dairy farming family back when getting onto the island meant navigating bumpy dirt roads, and the milk was still collected by boat because we didn’t have a bridge! I went to school in Wauchope and Port Macquarie, and after spending some time exploring the wider world the pull of the Hastings was too strong. I returned home to raise my two wonderful daughters, Lisa and Ellen, right where my own story began.

You spent an impressive 44 years in the banking industry, building deep roots in the c unit at did t at c a t r t ac u a ut runnin a ucc ful u in n the Mid North Coast? ooking back, my first three years travelling NSW on relief staff were incredibly exciting. I made lifelong friends along the way. In the early 1980s, I returned to the Mid North Coast after being appointed the youngest ANZ bank manager in regional NSW, eventually taking the reins of the Port Macquarie branch

and holding various management roles until my retirement a decade ago.

What did it teach me? Longevity in regional business comes down to a few core pillars: building rock solid relationships, mastering your budgets, deeply understanding both financials and human nature, and maintaining absolute consistency.

u ar incr di l a i nat a ut c a i nin all u in and r a a dri r f t auc a r f rc i t a r trac in these days? Retirement didn’t slow me down! I immediately launched my own ventures, running an Airbnb, producing hay and garden mulch on my property, and working as a small business training consultant. I absolutely love helping business owners unearth opportunities and ideas they might not have realised were there. As for the Wauchope Chamber, it is currently a powerhouse of proactive, passionate business people. We have a dedicated office in Wauchope’s main street, and it’s a joy to watch our collaborative ideas evolve into major local events that help our business community thrive. Your volunteer resume is remarkable, from t arl da f t l cal r n an t ur curr nt r it art alt at dri

t i i n a i n f r r ic I think I’ve always had a natural drive to volunteer! In 2019, I became the Inaugural Vice President of the Hastings Valley Amateur Bee Association, a role held for five years and am still closely involved with. On Tuesdays, you’ll find me at the Port Macquarie Base Hospital, assisting the nurses and physiotherapists with exercise classes for cardiac rehab patients. I’m also working with Equip, a fantastic new group helping locals hit by floods and fires build resilience before the next disaster strikes. Closer to home, I started the Rawdon Island Community Facebook page to keep neighbours connected. The Wauchope Chamber, where I’m incredibly proud to serve as Patron, also remains a massive passion of mine. To wrap things up, what is it that you l t a ut li in in t auc int rland I’ve gathered a lifetime of knowledge on this beautiful piece of earth, and I will be forever grateful for it. If I could leave readers with one final thought, it’s a gentle nudge to consider volunteering. Find a cause that speaks to you and give a little of your time. It’s a simple act, but having that extra purpose in life is incredibly rewarding. In fact, if you’re looking for your perfect volunteer match, come find me, ’d love to help you connect the dots

GROVE Dahlsford

Donna, can you share a bit about the history of the village and what drives your team to maintain such a high standard of presentation and care for your residents?

Dahlsford Grove was established in 1998, and almost thirty years on, our village is still owned and operated by the same local family. That continuity is rare in this industry, and it shows in the little things: established landscaping, longstanding residents, and a professional caring team who know you by name. Decisions about Dahlsford Grove are made here, on the ground, locally by people you’ll actually meet.

Residents often describe living at Dahlsford Grove as like being on a permanent holiday with incredible facilities like the heated indoor pool, bowling greens, tennis court and community centre. How do these

amenities shape the daily lives and social connections of the people who move here? Whether it’s water aerobics, tai chi, dancing, exercise classes, board games or snooker – just to name a few, our amenities and activities bring the community together. Neighbours who are there for each other, yet aren’t always knocking on your door, and activities or events you can join in on, but don’t have to.

The expectations of retirees and downsizers has evolved over the years, what are they looking for today and how are you able to meet those needs into the future?

The most common reaction when they come through the gate is…WOW – space and greenery! Then after a tour of the facilities and homes for sale, next comment is “when can we move in”? Expectations may have evolved over the years, but I think what most over-55’s still want is to be surrounded by kind, caring

respectful neighbours and to feel safe and secure. We provide access to services in our community centre including a visiting doctor, podiatrist, physiotherapist, and hairdresser. As you “age at home”, you can utilise these services or arrange your own in-home services.

Join us for our Open Day on Tuesday 21st July 10.00am to 2.00pm. St Agnes/Emmaus, Mid North Coast Legal, Hastings Physio & Health, Tender Funerals and the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing will also be set-up in our community centre for information and questions.

WHAT IF YOUR WORKPLACE HEALTH STRATEGY WAS COSTING YOU MORE THAN IT SAVES?

Most organisations spend thousands on wellness programs that don't work. Gym memberships nobody uses. EAP hotlines employees are too ashamed to call. Isolated health checks that catch nothing early. Meanwhile, burnout costs you 30% of your workforce's productivity. Hormonal transitions derail your best women. Unmanaged stress shows up as skin conditions, autoimmune flares, chronic illness and absences. You're investing in health theatre, not health transformation.

Here's what actually works: integration. Your people aren't fragmented beings. A stress response doesn't stay in their head - it shows up on their skin, in their hormones, in their relationships, in their work. Real workplace health addresses all of it simultaneously. A skin screening isn't just cancer detection.

t reveals inflammation, hormonal chaos, autoimmune markers, nutritional deficiencies - early warnings you'd normally miss until someone's gone on stress leave. That screening connects to mental health support that actually works, not a corporate referral. Women navigating perimenopause get genuine hormonal expertise, not well-meaning HR platitudes. Psychosocial audits don't just tick compliance boxes, they transform culture. Strengths coaching helps people thrive, not just manage. This is the Integrative Workplace Collective model: ethically aligned practitioners (dermatology nurses, mental health specialists, naturopaths, women's health experts, nurse practitioners, WHS auditors, strengths coaches) working together as a village, not as isolated vendors.

The result? Early intervention. Fewer absences. Better retention. Employees who feel genuinely

seen - and grateful that their organisation truly cares.

That's the difference between wellness theatre and real transformation. Your workplace doesn't need another wellness program. It needs integration. It needs authenticity. It needs the village.

WHY EVERY MUM DESERVES A 6-WEEK POSTNATAL PHYSIOTHERAPY CHECK

When a baby arrives, there are plenty of appointments scheduled to make sure they are feeding well, growing well and meeting all the important milestones. But what about Mum?

For many women, the only postnatal check they receive is a brief review with their GP around six weeks after birth. Whilst this appointment is important, it often doesn't include a detailed assessment of how the body is recovering from pregnancy and childbirth.

This is why more women are choosing to see a women's health physiotherapist following the birth of their baby.

In fact, the importance of postnatal pelvic health is becoming increasingly recognised worldwide. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines in the United Kingdom now recommend that women receive information and support regarding their pelvic floor health after birth.

This reflects a growing understanding that recovery after having a baby deserves attention, support, and when needed, rehabilitation.

Whether you have had a vaginal birth or a caesarean section, pregnancy and childbirth place enormous demands on the body. The

pelvic floor muscles support the bladder, bowel and uterus throughout pregnancy, whilst the abdominal wall stretches to accommodate your growing baby. Birth itself can place additional strain on the muscles, nerves and connective tissues within the pelvis.

Whilst some symptoms are common in the early postnatal period, that doesn't mean women simply have to put up with them.

A 6-week postnatal physiotherapy assessment is designed to check how your body is recovering and identify any concerns that may benefit from early intervention. This may include assessing pelvic floor muscle function, abdominal muscle separation, scar healing following a caesarean section or perineal tear, bladder and bowel function, and discussing your goals for returning to exercise.

Many women are surprised by what they consider "normal" after having a baby. Leaking urine when coughing, sneezing or running, feelings of heaviness or dragging within the pelvis, constipation, abdominal weakness, back pain or discomfort during intercourse are all concerns that women frequently mention during their appointments. Whilst these symptoms are common, they are not something you should simply accept as part of motherhood.

Equally important, not all pelvic floor issues cause symptoms. Some women feel completely

well but may have reduced pelvic floor strength, coordination or endurance following pregnancy and birth. Identifying these changes early allows for targeted advice and exercises that can support long-term pelvic health. For active mums, a postnatal review can also provide reassurance when returning to exercise. Many women are eager to get back to running, gym classes, sport or lifting heavier weights. A women's health physiotherapist can help determine whether your body is ready and provide guidance on how to safely progress your activity levels.

Perhaps one of the most valuable parts of a postnatal review is simply having the opportunity to ask questions. Many women leave feeling reassured that their recovery is progressing normally, whilst others gain answers to concerns they may have been unsure how to raise.

Motherhood brings enough uncertainty without having to wonder whether your body is recovering as it should.

Whether you're experiencing symptoms or simply want peace of mind, a 6-week postnatal physiotherapy check provides an opportunity to prioritise your own health and recovery. After all, whilst there are countless appointments dedicated to your baby's wellbeing, every mum deserves the same level of care and attention too.

COSMETIC Diagnosis Before Treatment MEDICINE

With over 15 years of plastic and reconstructive surgery in Brazil, Dr Laura Pattison combines advanced anatomical knowledge with a personalised approach to facial ageing and skin health. Many concerns commonly associated with ageing are not simply skin deep. Changes in bone support, collagen, fat compartments, ligaments and skin quality all contribute to how the face ages over time. Rather than focusing on a single

procedure, Dr Pattison takes the time to understand what is driving the changes each patient sees and develops an individualised treatment plan based on their anatomy, goals and stage of ageing.

A strong advocate for ageing well, she focuses on maintaining healthy skin, supporting facial structure and achieving natural looking results that preserve each patient's individuality. Treatment plans may incorporate regenerative approaches designed to support skin quality and stimulate the body's own collagen production, including biostimulators and other collagen stimulating treatments.

Creating a positive patient experience has always been a core focus of my leadership at Port miles. We understand that dental anxiety is very real, so we've built a culture centred on empathy, communication, and patient comfort. Our team takes the time to listen, explain treatments clearly, and ensure patients feel in control of their care. From the moment someone walks through the door, we aim to create a welcoming and relaxed environment that feels more like a supportive healthcare experience than a traditional dental visit. By focusing on

prevention, education, and long-term oral health, we help patients see dentistry as an important part of their overall wellbeing and lifestyle, rather than something to fear. As an inspiring business owner and clinician, how do you balance the technical precision required in dentistry with the empathetic, human-centric leadership needed to run a thriving local team?

Dentistry requires both precision and people skills, and I believe the two go hand in hand.

By combining modern technology with patient-centred care, we can deliver more comfortable, e cient, and predictable treatments that genuinely improve quality of life.

Delivering excellent clinical outcomes means maintaining high standards, investing in ongoing education, and embracing advances in technology. Equally important is creating a workplace culture built on trust, respect, and support. As a leader, I focus on empowering my team, encouraging open communication, and leading by example. When team members feel valued and motivated, they provide better care for our patients. Balancing technical excellence with genuine empathy allows us to achieve outstanding results while building lasting relationships with both our team and community.

What are some of the most exciting advancements or philosophies in modern dental care that you’ve brought to Port Macquarie to improve your patients' quality of life?

One of the most exciting developments in modern dentistry is the shift toward preventive, minimally invasive care. At Port Smiles, we have embraced advanced digital technology, including digital scanning and imaging, which improves accuracy, comfort, and treatment outcomes. We also focus on personalised treatment planning,

helping patients make informed decisions that support their long-term oral health. Beyond treating dental problems, we take a holistic approach, recognising the connection between oral health and overall wellbeing. By combining modern technology with patient-centred care, we can deliver more comfortable, efficient, and predictable treatments that genuinely improve quality of life.

We often talk about health in terms f fitn and di t ut ral alt i deeply connected to overall well-being, how do you educate the community on looking at a healthy smile as a vital part of a vibrant, healthy lifestyle?

Education is a key part of what we do at Port Smiles. We encourage patients to view oral health as an essential component of overall wellbeing, not just something that affects their teeth. Research continues to show strong links between oral health and conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and general health. Through regular check-ups, personalised advice, and community engagement, we help people

understand how healthy habits, nutrition, and preventive dental care contribute to a healthier lifestyle. A healthy smile supports confidence, comfort, and quality of life, making it an important foundation for longterm health and wellbeing.

Looking back at your journey with Port Smiles so far, is there a particular patient story or business milestone that stands out as a reminder of why you chose this path?

Looking back, one of the most meaningful milestones wasn’t a particular treatment or business achievement, but the decision to take the leap into business ownership. That step would not have been possible without the unwavering support of my family, especially my mother, who continually encouraged me to believe in myself and pursue my vision. er confidence in me gave me the courage to grow Port Smiles into what it is today. Every milestone we achieve, from expanding our team, opening custom modern facilities, to caring for more families in the community, reminds me of the importance of that support and why I chose this path.

Thank you Sagnik.

Healthy Smiles start with Trust

In a regional town, trust is not something you build overnight. It is earned through conversations, consistency, community involvement, and simply being there when people need you.

For generations in the Port Macquarie greater area, dentistry has been part of that story.

Long before modern technology, digital scanners, CBCT imaging and same-day crowns, local families placed their trust in respected clinicians who helped establish the foundations of dental care in our community. Practitioners such as Dr Vispi Davar and Dr Huxley Pohlmann played important roles in caring for local families and helping shape the culture of community-focused dentistry in our area.

At Sundial Dental, we are proud to carry that legacy forward.

Twenty years ago, Dr Peter Elfar and the Sundial team committed themselves to building a practice centred around modern dentistry, genuine relationships, and long-term patient care. While dentistry continues to evolve, the values that matter most remain unchanged.

Healthy smiles start with trust.

• Trust means taking the time to listen.

• Trust means explaining treatment options

clearly and honestly.

• Trust means helping nervous patients feel comfortable.

• Trust means treating every patient as an individual, not a number.

Twenty years ago, Dr Peter Elfar and the Sundial team commi ed themselves to building a practice centred around modern dentistry, genuine relationships, and longterm patient care.

Over the past two decades, Sundial Dental has had the privilege of caring for multiple generations of local families. We have celebrated milestones, watched children grow into adults, and welcomed new families into the region. Many patients who first sat in our chairs years ago now bring their own children and grandchildren to see us.

That continuity is something we are incredibly proud of.

Dentistry today is about far more than teeth alone. Oral health is closely connected to overall health, wellbeing, confidence and quality of life. Modern preventive dentistry allows us to focus on keeping people healthy rather than simply treating problems when they arise.

But no technology, no matter how advanced, can replace the importance of trust between a patient and their healthcare provider.

As Sundial Dental celebrates 20 years of caring for the communities of Port Macquarie, Wauchope, Laurieton, Taree and Kempsey we remain grateful for every patient who has entrusted us with their care or the care of their family.

We are proud of where we have come from, respectful of the clinicians who helped build dentistry in our region before us, and excited about the future of patient care in our community.

Because after all these years, one thing remains true:

Healthy smiles start with trust.

To celebrate 20 years of being part of the communities we live in, we are offering monthly give aways, information and events. RYAN JAMES

PODIATRY

For many years, Ryan James Podiatry has provided podiatry care to families throughout the Hastings region, with a longstanding focus on the assessment and management of foot and ankle conditions across all stages of life.

The practice is now entering a new phase, with Dr Ryan James, an AHPRA-registered specialist in podiatric surgery, expanding the clinic’s services to include podiatric surgical care. Podiatric surgery is the specialist branch of podiatry dedicated to the surgical management of foot and ankle conditions. While his qualifications and registration allow him to provide foot and ankle surgical treatment, Dr James emphasises that surgery is only considered when clinically appropriate, and after careful assessment of non-surgical treatment options.

strongly believe in a conservative-first approach,’ he says. ‘Many foot and ankle conditions can improve with appropriate nonsurgical management. I view surgery as an additional treatment option that should be used judiciously and only when considered clinically appropriate for the individual patient.’

This philosophy underpins the practice’s approach to patient care, with an emphasis on communication, informed consent and shared decision-making throughout the treatment process.

Dr Ryan James provides assessment and management for a range of foot and ankle

conditions. These include bunions and other big toe deformities, hammer toes and painful toe alignment issues, recurrent corns and pressurerelated lesions, as well as forefoot pain and structural deformity. The practice also provides assessment and management of midfoot arthritis, flatfoot and high-arch conditions, tendon injuries, ligament instability, and a range of reconstructive foot and ankle procedures where clinically indicated.

Ryan James Podiatry is currently accepting new patients and referrals are welcome.

Dr. Kristy, I notice my hands and chest show my age much more than my face. Why is that? Your hands and chest are "age-telling zones." They're exposed to sun constantly, but we apply sunscreen to faces and forget these areas. The skin on hands is thinner with fewer oil glands, making it drier and more vulnerable. Both areas lack the sebaceous glands that keep facial skin naturally moisturised. After years of unprotected sun exposure, you've got visible aging that screams your age. The hands are particularly telling because they're always visible, you can't hide them like you can hide other areas of the body.

What are the most common concerns? Sun damage and pigmentation top the list, age spots, brown spots, and uneven tone. Loss of volume and visible veins are common, as hands and chest naturally lose collagen and fat over time. Crepey, thin-looking skin and texture changes are frequent complaints. Many patients tell me their hands look 10 years older than their face. The chest often develops a leathery appearance from sun exposure, and brown spots become increasingly noticeable, especially in low necklines.

What's the at-home approach? Treat hands and chest like you treat your face. Apply SPF 50 daily, this is non-negotiable. This is the most important step you can take to prevent further damage. Use a rich hand cream with peptides and hyaluronic acid, and apply it multiple times daily, especially after washing. Extend your

Hands and Chest: Why These Areas Need Special Attention

evening skincare routine to your chest, apply your serums, vitamin A, B3, and treatment products to the chest area as well. Vitamin A is particularly effective on the chest for improving texture and stimulating collagen production. B3 (niacinamide) strengthens the skin barrier and improves overall resilience on both hands and chest. This simple addition takes seconds but makes a tremendous difference over time. Are there professional treatments available? Absolutely. Chemical peels work beautifully for pigmentation and texture, breaking down age spots and revealing fresher skin underneath. IPL targets brown spots and evens skin tone across the chest. Microneedling improves texture and stimulates collagen throughout the treated area. For more significant concerns, anofractional F provides excellent results, it tightens, resurfaces, and improves overall skin quality dramatically. We also have bioregenerative treatments and skin boosters that restore volume, hydration, and skin quality in these delicate areas. Skin boosters work by deeply hydrating the skin and improving overall texture and appearance from within, making them excellent for crepey hands and chest.

What about volume loss in the hands?

Volume loss is a common concern. We have doctor-only treatment options that address this and restore a more youthful appearance to hands. The specific approach depends on your individual concerns and goals. A consultation allows us to assess and recommend the best option for you.

Can treatments really make a difference? es, significantly. 've seen dramatic improvements with professional treatments. Pigmentation fades, texture improves, skin becomes tighter and more youthful-looking. Many patients are shocked at how much younger their hands look after targeted treatment. The key is consistency with at-home care combined with professional treatments when needed.

What's the biggest mistake people make? Ignoring these areas entirely. People invest in expensive facial serums but don't extend skincare to hands and chest. This creates a mismatch, a youthful-looking face with aged hands and chest. The fix is simple just extend your routine down. It takes seconds longer but transforms results.

Final advice? Start now. SPF 50 daily on hands and chest, rich hand creams, and extend your evening serums including vitamin A and B3 to your chest. f sun damage or aging is significant, book a consultation. Your hands and chest deserve the same attention as your face. i fi ld ircuit rt ac uari 0421 253 025

THE INVISIBLE BACKPACK

Every bloke I meet is carrying a backpack. It’s not hanging over his shoulder, but it’s there.

For most of us, it starts young - childhood setbacks, bullying, trauma, or simply being told to "harden up." Instead of dealing with it, we toss it in the backpack and keep moving. Then life accelerates: work, relationships, kids, mortgages, financial pressure, mistakes, and regrets.

Most men never stop to unpack. We just keep stacking weight on top of old, unresolved baggage until carrying that crushing weight becomes normal. We tell ourselves we’re fine, keep turning up, and keep pushing forward. Then, one day, we hit a wall. We find ourselves exhausted, angry, disconnected, turning to vices, or wondering why we feel so profoundly stuck. The backpack is simply too heavy. Tragically, this unaddressed pressure can lead to suicide.

I carried that backpack for a long time, and if I’m honest, I still throw things in there from time to time. I carried guilt, shame, addiction, gambling, and a lot of poor decisions. Like many men, I thought the answer was to work harder, stay busy, and ignore it. But what you bury always finds a way back up.

What changed my life wasn’t becoming tougher - it was finding a way to get better. t started with finding people could talk to without judgment, alongside building my own personal tool belt: weight training, journaling, breathwork, spending time with family, and coaching my kids' soccer teams. I am living proof

that there is a path forward.

The Tool Belt. The good news is that tools are available, and every bloke’s tool belt looks a little different. For some, it’s exercise or time in nature; for others, it’s therapy, breathwork, journaling, or meditation. Sometimes, it’s as simple as an honest conversation with a mate, joining a men’s circle, or calling a helpline.

Keep an open mind. I never thought I’d do breathwork, but it became a total game-changer for me. There is no one-size-fits-all solution. t’s about finding healthy ways to process what you’re carrying instead of adding more weight. Over time, these tools build the awareness, resilience, and connection needed to make the load lighter.

Self Seen: Local Port Macquarie Action

This is exactly why we created Self Seen. We wanted to build real spaces for men in Port Macquarie to drop their guards and be real.

Sunday Mornings (7:00 AM): We meet at Shelly Beach for the town's best bacon and egg rolls and a beach walk.

Weekly Men’s Circles: Hosted at our Men's Hub (alternating Tuesdays and Thursdays), providing a confidential, safe space to talk openly without fear of judgment.

Friday Mornings (5:30 AM): A weekly run/ walk at Town Beach. Year-Round Support: We run regular breathwork sessions, workshops, and community events.

The feedback we get is always the same: "I

focus contributor.

MEN’S Heh

thought I was the only one." The moment a man realises he isn't alone, everything changes.

Unstoppable Community & Breaking the Cycle. Through Unstoppable Community, I work with men who want more from life; men who want to raise their standards and become better fathers, partners, leaders, and mates.

This August, we are running our next Two-Night Men’s Retreat. It’s about getting comfortable with being uncomfortable, pushing limits, engaging in real conversations, and surrounding yourself with like-minded men who genuinely want to see each other win. We also run monthly Breathwork with Benny sessions, mindset workshops, and corporate teambuilding events.

So many blokes lack a trusted, non-judgmental space. They might have plenty of mates to drink with, but very few people they feel safe enough to be honest with. Breaking out of cycles that no longer serve you, like weekend drinking, unhealthy habits, or negative environments, is incredibly hard. Men often worry about letting their mates down or what people will think.

But growth requires making choices that might make others uncomfortable. Part of becoming a healthier man is learning to back yourself, stand by your values, and choose what serves your long-term future over short-term comfort. Having a community around you that supports your growth, rather than pulling you back into old habits, makes all the difference.

KRISTAL KINSELA

CONQUERING BREAST CANCER

Ahead of a special screening of Conquering Breast Cancer Australia at Majestic Cinemas Port Macquarie on July 26, local breast cancer survivor and advocate Kristal Kinsela is sharing her powerful story of resilience, recovery and hope. Following the documentary screening, Kristal will take part in a Q&A session, o ering audiences the opportunity to join an important conversation around breast cancer awareness and support.

Hi Kristal. You're one of the featured voices in the new Australian documentary Conquering Breast Cancer, what was it like sharing your story on screen, and why did you feel it was important to be involved in the project?

It was both surreal and incredibly emotional. Watching your own story unfold on a big screen is something you never really imagine happening to you. There were moments of pride, moments of sadness, and moments where I was reminded just how much had happened in such a short period of time. I chose to be involved because breast cancer doesn't just affect one person. It affects families, friendships, workplaces and entire communities. If sharing my experience helps even one person seek support earlier, ask questions, advocate for themselves or feel less alone, then it's worth it. I also wanted to bring visibility to the experiences of Aboriginal women navigating cancer, because representation matters and our stories deserve to be seen and heard. You were diagnosed with breast cancer

just months after trekking to Everest Base Camp. Can you take us back to that time and share a little about your journey and what helped you stay strong through such an intense period of your life?

The contrast was extraordinary. One moment I was standing at Everest Base Camp, feeling strong, healthy and capable of taking on the world. Just a few months later, I was sitting in a doctor's office hearing the words, ou have breast cancer.

Like many people, I was shocked. I was active and fit, and thought was in the best of health. Cancer wasn't on my radar. What followed was a whirlwind of appointments, chemotherapy, surgery, radiation and ongoing treatment.

What helped me stay strong was focusing on each milestone and staying dedicated to the things that I knew were in my control. I focused on going to the gym, eating good quality food, getting sleep and staying connected to my friends and family. I reminded myself daily that this was something I was going through, not who I was. My connection to country grounded me; connection to the beautiful Birpai country. I spent hours at the beach, and walking along

the coast gave me strength during some of the hardest days.

As a proud Jawoyn and Wiradjuri woman, you've become a passionate advocate for culturally safe cancer care. Why is this issue so important and what changes would you like to see?

Culturally safe care is essential. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people often experience poorer health outcomes and can face additional barriers when accessing treatment. When people don't feel culturally safe, respected or understood, it can impact whether they engage with healthcare services at all, and can affect whether they get any treatment at all.

I was very fortunate that we have an Aboriginal cancer worker at our cancer institute. The nurses out there are friendly and kind. I always felt nurtured and supported. I would like to see more Indigenous representation across the healthcare workforce, and some colour across the treatment spaces, it is very cold, white and clinical. I used to wear Indigenous designs to chemo to add some colour, and have my outfits as talking points across the staff. What kind of barriers do Indigenous

Australians still face when accessing cancer care and support?

The barriers can be practical, cultural and systemic. Many Aboriginal people live in regional and remote communities where access to specialist services requires extensive travel, time away from family and significant financial cost.

There can also be a lack of trust in healthcare systems due to historical experiences and ongoing racism. Navigating a complex cancer journey is difficult enough without having to overcome additional barriers around communication, cultural understanding or access to support services.

Improving outcomes requires us to look beyond treatment alone and consider the whole patient experience.

Breast cancer awareness has come a long a ut a t fil i li t t r i still much work to be done. Where do you think the greatest opportunities for progress lie?

Awareness has improved significantly, and sadly people say that breast cancer is the good cancer to get. But it doesn’t acknowledge that there can be lifelong fear, and treatment to prevent reoccurrence. The biggest opportunities lie in early detection, equitable access to care and ongoing support beyond treatment.

We also need to continue investing in research, particularly around different breast cancer types, treatment side effects and

survivorship. More people are surviving breast cancer than ever before, but survivorship comes with its own challenges. We need to talk more openly about the physical, emotional and psychological impacts that continue long after treatment ends.

The screening hosted by Port Macquarie Pink Girls on July 26 will include a Q&A session with you. What are you most looking forward to about connecting with the local community on the day?

What I'm looking forward to most is the conversation. Breast cancer can be an incredibly isolating experience, but when people come together and share their stories, something powerful happens.

Port Macquarie has been such a supportive community throughout my journey, and I'm looking forward to meeting others who have been impacted by breast cancer, whether as patients, survivors, carers, family members or friends. These conversations remind us that none of us are alone.

Looking ahead, what are your hopes for the future of breast cancer care, awareness and support in Australia?

My hope is that every person diagnosed with breast cancer has access to world-class treatment, compassionate support and culturally safe care regardless of where they live, their background or their circumstances.

I hope we continue to improve survival rates while also recognising the importance of quality of life after treatment. I would love to see more support for survivorship, more investment in prevention and research, and greater equity in outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Ultimately, I hope fewer people hear the words "you have cancer", but for those who do, I hope they know they won't face it alone.

Finally, why would you encourage people to attend the screening of Conquering Breast Cancer Australia and be part of the conversation afterwards?

This film is about much more than breast cancer. It's about resilience, hope, courage and the power of human connection.

Whether you've been personally impacted by cancer or not, there is something in these stories that will resonate with you. The documentary is educational, informative and deeply moving, but most importantly, it starts conversations that matter.

I encourage people to come along, watch the film, ask questions and be part of the discussion afterwards. The more we talk about breast cancer, the more we learn, support one another and ultimately improve outcomes for future generations. Thanks Kristal.

SKIN Winter

LTHE IMPORTANCE OF A HEALTHY SKIN BARRIE R

Winter has a way of humbling even the most dedicated skincare lovers. One minute your skin is glowing, the next it’s feeling tight, flaky, sensitive, and questioning every life choice that led it to stand outside in a cold wind. Lower humidity, chilly weather, indoor heating, and seasonal stress can all take a toll on your skin barrier, the skin’s built-in bodyguard.

et’s be honest: when skin starts acting up, the temptation is often to throw every active ingredient at it and hope for the best. But winter skin usually isn’t asking for a bootcamp - it’s asking for support.

Your skin barrier plays a vital role in keeping moisture in and environmental aggressors out. When it becomes compromised, you may notice dehydration, redness, irritation, sensitivity, and inflammation. ather than pushing the skin harder during winter, this is the season to focus on nourishment, restoration, and protection.

A healthy skin barrier is made up of skin cells and lipids that work together like bricks and mortar. When this structure is intact, skin is better able to retain hydration, defend itself against environmental stressors, and maintain overall balance. When it becomes weakened, moisture escapes more easily and irritants can penetrate more readily, often leading to the cycle of dryness and sensitivity many people

experience during winter.

One of the biggest skincare myths I see is the belief that stronger always means better. In reality, healthy skin is rarely achieved by constantly challenging it. Sometimes the smartest thing you can do is support the skin’s natural functions and let it get on with the job it was designed to do.

This is one of the reasons I love skincare formulated with botanically active ingredients. There’s often an assumption that natural ingredients are somehow less effective, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Many of the most impressive skincare ingredients are plant-derived and packed with antioxidants, polyphenols, vitamins, essential fatty acids, and other bioactive compounds that deliver real results while working with the skin, and not against it.

Botanical ingredients such as calendula, chamomile, stone crop, camellia oil, and arnica have long been valued for their soothing, antioxidant, and skin-supportive properties. When thoughtfully formulated,

these ingredients can help strengthen the skin barrier while providing hydration, comfort, and protection against environmental stress, because great skin isn’t about bullying your barrier into submission, it’s about creating an environment where it can thrive.

While corrective treatments absolutely have their place, long-term skin health comes from balance. Botanically active ingredients can help calm inflammation, replenish essential lipids, provide antioxidant protection, and strengthen skin resilience without overwhelming the skin. That philosophy is especially important during winter, when skin often benefits most from comfort, nourishment, and a little extra kindness.

In addition to choosing supportive skincare, simple lifestyle habits can make a significant difference. sing a humidifier, avoiding excessively hot showers, staying hydrated, and protecting skin from harsh weather conditions can all help minimise barrier disruption during the colder months.

One range I consistently reach for during the cooler months is Eminence Organics.

Because great skin isn’t about bullying your barrier into submission, it’s about creating an environment where it can thrive.

Known for its nutrient-rich, botanically active formulations and holistic approach to skin health, Eminence focuses on supporting the skin while still delivering targeted results.

The Stone Crop Cleansing Oil is a winter favourite. It effortlessly removes makeup, sunscreen, and daily buildup while helping preserve the skin’s moisture levels. Instead of leaving skin feeling stripped and squeaky-clean which is rarely the compliment we think it is, it leaves it soft, comfortable, and beautifully nourished.

For clients experiencing dryness or environmental stress, Facial Recovery Oil is a gorgeous option. This blend of botanical oils helps replenish essential lipids and soothe skin that feels depleted, fragile, or sensitised by the colder weather.

The Camellia Glow Solid Face Oil is another standout for skin craving hydration and

Traditional transition lenses rely strictly on UV light to darken. The catch? Car windshields block UV rays, leaving standard lenses clear while you squint.

Drivewear lenses—a hands-down team favorite (especially for Max!)—solve this completely. Engineered specifically for the road, they react to both UV and visible light, meaning they actually darken behind the wheel to protect your vision where you need it most.

COUR’TARLOR KELLY-DALEY

At just 10 years old, Cour’Tarlor Kelly-Daley is proving that age is no barrier to making a di erence. Inspired by her own experiences and a desire to help other children facing health challenges, she has become a passionate fundraiser for Trek4Kidz and the Starlight Children’s Foundation, with a special community fundraiser coming up at Se lers Inn on July 11.

Hi Cour'Tarlor. You have already raised an incredible amount for Trek4Kidz and the Starlight Children's Foundation, can you tell us about these charities and what inspired you to start fundraising?

Trek4Kidz is my favourite charity organisation. What I love most is that every dollar raised goes directly to the Starlight Children's Foundation, helping sick kids and their families. Starlight has been a big part of my life from when I visited Westmead Children’s Hospital, so fundraising is my way of giving back.

Can you tell us a little about your own journey and the challenges you've faced since having your leg amputated as a baby?

I was only 10 months old when I had my leg amputated, so I don't remember life any differently. Everything I have learnt has been my normal. When other babies were learning to walk, I was learning to walk too, just with a

prosthetic leg.

One of the biggest challenges has been needing new prosthetic legs to keep up with me as I grow. I've also had to learn how to do some things differently and work through the discomfort that can sometimes come with wearing a prosthetic every day. From a very young age, I learnt how to put my prosthetic leg on and become independent.

There have been challenges along the way, but I've never wanted people to feel sorry for me. I just want people to accept me for who I am. My prosthetic leg is part of my story, but it doesn't define who am. love having a go at new challenges and proving that being different doesn't stop you from achieving your goals. If anything, my journey has made me stronger, more determined and grateful for every opportunity that comes my way.

You've been fundraising for the past two years. What kinds of events or activities have you been involved in to raise money?

I am so lucky to have so many people support

my fundraising journey. Over the past two years, 've sold raffle tickets, helped organise community fundraisers, spoken to people about Trek4Kidz and shared my story to encourage others to get involved.

The reason my fundraising has been so successful is because of the incredible support from my family, friends and community. They have backed me every step of the way. I couldn't have achieved any of this without them.

This month you're hosting a community fundraiser at Settlers Inn on July 11. Can you tell us about the event and what people can expect if they come along?

I'm really excited about the fundraiser. It's going to be a fun night with raffles, prizes and lots of laughs, but most importantly it's about bringing people together to support children and families who need a little extra help. Tickets will be available from 5.00 pm, and I would love for people to come along, have a yarn, and learn more about why Trek4Kidz and the Starlight Children's Foundation mean so much to me. Every person who attends

is helping make a difference, and I hope everyone enjoys a great night while supporting an amazing cause.

We have been incredibly lucky to receive donations from many organisations, local businesses and individuals. There are far too many generous supporters to mention individually, but I am so grateful for every single contribution.

Every li le bit truly counts, and no contribution is ever too small. Whether it’s donating a prize, a ending the night, or just cheering us on from afar, it all helps make a real di erence.

has already been incredible, and I’m hopeful we can add a few more special experiences to make the night unforgettable. If anyone has any contacts or knows how something like this could be made possible, please reach out to my family, we would be so grateful for any help or introductions.

such a big difference to other children and families? If you could send a message to children currently spending time in hospital, what would you like them to know?

It makes me feel really proud to know that I've been able to help other people. The biggest highlight for me was being in Port Macquarie when the Trek4Kidz convoy arrived after their incredible journey through the outback. Seeing all the vehicles come in and knowing how much money had been raised for Starlight was really special.

We hear there will be an auction on the night. Are there any exciting items or experiences that people can bid on?

We have already received some amazing items for the raffle that have been generously donated by businesses and community members, and I am still on the hunt for a few big-ticket donations for the auction.

When people say “aim big,” I would absolutely love to secure something like a family pass to a theme park with accommodation, a short cruise, or even a home office setup such as a computer and monitor package. Those kinds of dream items would make the auction even more exciting and help us raise even more for Trek4Kidz and the Starlight Children’s Foundation. The support from our community

How can the community get behind this event and your fundraising?

Get behind this event by coming along on the night, buying raffle tickets, bidding in the auction or making a donation. Even simply sharing the fundraiser with family, friends and on social media helps spread the word and brings more support to the cause.

Every little bit truly counts, and no contribution is ever too small. Whether it’s donating a prize, attending the night, or just cheering us on from afar, it all helps make a real difference. Most importantly, it’s about coming together as a community. When people show up, support each other and get behind something meaningful, it creates a ripple effect of kindness that goes far beyond just one night. How does it feel knowing you've made

Miss P has been a huge inspiration to me. Watching the trekkers give up their time, travel thousands of kilometres and work so hard to help children they have never met showed me how much kindness there is in the world. Hopefully one day, when I'm old enough, Miss P and I will be Trek4Kidz trekkers together and I'll be able to help raise money for Starlight from inside one of those vehicles.

To any child spending time in hospital, I want you to know that you're stronger than you think. There will be hard days, but there will also be good days. Keep believing in yourself and never let anyone tell you what you can't do. I had my leg amputated when I was a baby, and I have learnt that being different doesn't stop you from achieving amazing things. our challenges don't define you, it's your courage, determination and kindness that make you who you are.

JUDY SAUL

THE LILLI PILLI LADIES

What began as a small a ernoon tea organised by two recently retired women has grown into one of the Macleay Valley’s most impactful community fundraising groups. As the Lilli Pilli Ladies celebrate 10 years of friendship, advocacy and generosity, President Judy Saul reflects on the group’s remarkable journey, which has seen almost half a million dollars raised to support local cancer services and patients.

Hi Judy, congratulations on reaching such an incredible milestone with the Lilli Pilli Ladies. In 2026 you’re celebrating 10 years of fundraising, friendship and community spirit, looking back, what inspired the group to begin this journey?

The journey began with two ladies who had just retired and were pondering what to do in their retirement. It began with organising a small afternoon tea, with 50 ladies attending, with monies raised being donated to cancer research. As it was very successful, and with a few more ladies eager to join the group, it was decided to make it a yearly event. Cancer patients at that time had to travel to Port Macquarie, Newcastle or Sydney for treatment. The decision was made the following year that funds raised would be donated to our Local Area Health

Service covering both Kempsey and Port Macquarie, to purchase medical equipment/ furnishings to aid and assist cancer patients as much as possible.

Over the past decade, the Lilli Pilli Ladies have raised an extraordinary $474,000 for local oncology services.

n u r ct n t at fi ur at does it mean to you and the volunteers who have worked so hard behind the scenes?

To see the results and hear positive feedback from cancer patients and/ or their families is very rewarding and makes all the hard work extremely worthwhile.

It is extremely gratifying that we have been able to raise such an incredible amount which has been utilised in assisting local cancer patients. We are constantly

amazed by the generosity and support we receive from our local Kempsey/Macleay Valley community. To see the results and hear positive feedback from cancer patients and/ or their families is very rewarding and makes all the hard work extremely worthwhile. The fundraising has made a real difference to local health services, including the recent $70,740.83 donation that helped the MNC Cancer Institute’s Kempsey Outreach Clinic purchase a Sonosite LX ultrasound machine and training for 22 nurses. What does support like that mean for local patients

and families?

To be able to fund such vital medical equipment such as the Sonosite ultrasound and be able to have 22 nurses trained in the operation of the machine is a wonderful step forward in the treatment of local cancer patients. To have the ultrasound machine on site at all times enables doctors and nurses to perform an ultrasound on the patient as soon as the need is indicated and have a result very quickly which then enables prompt and correct care of the patient. What have you learned about the importance of investing in these resources within our local hospitals?

Government funding is very limited to regional health services which has resulted in country towns such as Kempsey losing a lot of medical services. This has resulted in Kempsey/Macleay Valley patients having to travel to Port Macquarie regularly, sometimes daily, for treatment. In 2022 the Lilli Pilli Ladies lost one of our beautiful ladies to cancer. We became very aware of how terribly draining it was on patients and carers, physically, emotionally and financially travelling over 0kms to receive cancer treatment. In 2023 we made the decision to put our time and energy into campaigning our Local Area Health Service for a local Outreach Cancer Unit at Kempsey Hospital to treat low risk cancer patients. We organised a public forum and with support and assistance from our state and federal MP’s, oncology representatives from Port Macquarie and the local community it was a huge success. On submission of our proposals to Mid North Coast Local Area Health Service we were successful. Kempsey Low Risk Outreach Cancer Unit began operating on 20th March, 2024 and is now treating a large volume of local cancer patients 3 days per week.

The Lilli Pilli Ladies are a wonderful example of community coming together for a shared purpose. What do you think has driven the incredible generosity and ongoing support from the Macleay Valley community? We feel the continued support and

Everyone who a ends our events has been touched by cancer themselves or have a family member or friend going through the cancer journey.

generosity we receive from local businesses, community groups and the local community is due to the fact that they are fully aware that all funds raised are utilised in purchasing equipment to aid local cancer patients receiving treatment in both Kempsey and Port Macquarie Oncology. Over 20 has been donated to empsey Outreach Cancer Unit, Kempsey Palliative Care and the Kempsey Lymphedema Clinic which all aids local patients.

Your upcoming Prostate Awareness event at The Stables, Gladstone Hotel on 25th July 2026 is another important opportunity to bring people together. Why do you think community events like this are so valuable when it comes to starting conversations around health, prevention and early detection?

For our yearly afternoon tea fundraising event, which is held in October each year, we focus on a different theme drawing attention to various forms of cancer. These events draw attention to the need of early detection and start important discussions. Everyone who attends our events has been touched by cancer themselves or have a family member or friend going through the cancer journey. Prostate Cancer is a common

cancer affecting men of all ages. By holding an event focusing on this particular cancer, we feel it is a good platform to get men discussing it, and to learn the importance of having a PSA blood test and be aware of early symptoms. We have a community speaker from Port Macquarie Prostate Cancer Support Group attending to present much needed information.

What can people expect from the Prostate Awareness fundraiser and how can the community get involved?

The community can get involved by purchasing tickets online through the link on Lilli Pilli Ladies FaceBook page, or by purchasing at Lifestyle Real Estate, Smith Street, Kempsey.

t will be a fun filled night with canapes BBQ, raffles, 00 clubs, a wonderful lucky door prize and amazing auction items donated by local businesses and also privately.

Entertainment will be provided by ‘’The Roys”, a very popular, well known local group beginning at . 0 pm.

Please support this wonderful cause and help raise funds for your local community as well as having a great time.

Thanks Judy.

i Josie. You have made history at the Youth Olympics, and your senior career has been a whirlwind of World Cup podiums and Olympic success. Looking back at the t na r fir t ad a in what is the biggest piece of lifestyle advice you’d give your younger self about balancing elite success and can you share with us a little about your journey?

Honestly, looking back at my teenage self, I wouldn’t say much more than: “Do what you love and always give it 100% effort.” I really credit my parents for shaping that mindset because growing up, fun was always the priority. Even as my snowboarding progressed, never felt like was sacrificing much because I genuinely enjoyed what I was doing. Sure, there were times where balancing school, friendships, and elite sport meant making decisions, but I never wanted to put all my eggs in one basket. I chose the opportunities that excited me most, and I think that balance and variety not only improved my skill set as an athlete, but also shaped me into the person I am today.

Snowboard cross is famously unpredictable. Collisions are common,

and the stakes are massive. You've mentioned before that you use nerves and risk to fuel your ambition, can you pull back the curtain on how you mentally prepare for that pressure, and how we can adopt a similar mindset?

Pressure is definitely an interesting part of performance, especially in sport. For me, most of the pressure I feel is internal and comes from the expectations I place on myself, but I’ve learned that those expectations usually stem from belief. The best way I’ve found to manage pressure is through confidence and preparation. I focus on where I am today, where I want to get to, and what needs to change to make those goals a reality. When you leave no stone unturned, you trust the work you’ve already done and the noise quietens. I also believe that pressure to perform is mostly result oriented so by forming goals around personal performance instead takes away some of those factors

OLYMPIC SNOWBOARDING CHAMPION

Career success, resilience and the mindset of a champion, Olympic Snowboarding athlete and gold medalist Josie Ba looks forward to returning to Port Macquarie to open this year’s 2026 Luminosity Youth Summit to inspire the next generation through her journey.

particularly in such an unpredictable sport. As far as nerves and risk go, I think they are fun! You get to do something you do so much of, but with a different challenge. When you overcome that its very satisfying! Josie, you have childhood links to the Port Macquarie region, but your career has taken you to the world’s most elite n fi ld at d it mean to you to come back to the Mid North Coast, swap the snow for the sea, and stand on the Glasshouse stage to open the Luminosity Youth Summit this month?

I’m thrilled to come back to Port Macquarie and speak at Luminosity, especially knowing my Nan who lives in North Haven will be in the audience. She’s my number one supporter and hasn’t had the chance to see me compete on the world stage in person yet, so I feel like the Glasshouse stage is the next best thing! As I travel so much, I don’t get up to Port as often as I’d like, but every time I do, I feel such a

strong connection to the environment and lifestyle there. Swapping the snow for the sea is always refreshing, and being back on the Mid North Coast scratches an itch.

This year’s Luminosity Youth Summit theme is 'Limitless.' As someone who lit rall i r i d u and ar c rn r f r a li in d u d fin in li itl in r da lif and can un l fr r i nal ar a ad t t at act a ind t would define being limitless as never believing something is beyond your capability. I think we dream and aspire to things for a reason, because somewhere within us, we already have the desire and potential to achieve them. Big goals don’t happen overnight, but by moving towards them little by little, they slowly start to feel possible. When I was seven or eight and dreamed of winning the Olympics, I don’t think I truly thought that would happen, but day by day that belief came. But come race day, I woke with no doubt in my mind that I could win that race. Being limitless applies to more than just goals and aspirations, it applies to the variety of things you can achieve and the multitude of personas one body and one mind can facilitate. We are so much more than one version.

Growing up in Jindabyne was such a privilege, and I’m incredibly grateful for the lifestyle and values it gave me. Living in a regional town meant I spent my childhood outdoors, being creative. I was building treehouses and pulley systems which meant Mum could deliver us food from the house with my friends. Of course you can do this in a city, but looking back many of the qualities that helped me succeed as an athlete were shaped by growing up in a small community and by turning random ideas into our normal weekend activity. The biggest thing I want young people to take away from my story is that your postcode does not dictate your potential and it can be a competitive edge when it comes to success in any field. Where you come from will shape you, but it should never limit how big your dreams and future are.

Success to me looks like happiness, balance, and most importantly, growth. I love being challenged and learning new things, not just on snow but in life in general, and I want to keep evolving rather than being confined by where I think I “should” be. Despite achieving one of the sport’s biggest milestones, I still have a lot of ambition, including becoming world champion and winning a crystal globe (season rank #1).

More importantly, success for me isn’t only result-based. I’m fortunate to be in a relatively young sport where we’re still pushing boundaries, especially as women, and I want to be at the forefront of that progression. Off the mountain, success is being able to enjoy life with balance, stay grounded, keep learning and hopefully in doing so show women and young girls that you really can achieve anything.

IESHA APTHORPE

Qualifying for the 2026 Australian Swimming Trials and racing alongside Australia's elite swimmers is an achievement most young athletes only dream of, but for local swimmer Iesha Apthorpe, it is the result of years of dedication, determination and resilience.

i Iesha. Congratulations on qualifying for the 2026 Australian Swimming Trials and competing alongside the country's best swimmers. What events did you race in, and how did it feel to step onto the blocks at such a prestigious competition?

Thank you so much! It was honestly surreal. Competing at the Trials with the Olympians was an incredible experience. I tried to focus on my race plan and treat it like any other swim, but the atmosphere and the crowd made it feel electric. I felt really blessed that my Mum, Dad and both of my brothers could come and cheer me on at the Trials. My grandparents and other family and friends were watching on the live stream. competed in the 0m Butterfly and 50m Freestyle. I was particularly happy with

my 0m Butterfly as was on PB, and felt quite smooth throughout the race.

The Trials brought together athletes all chasing the dream of representing Australia at the Commonwealth Games, what was it like competing in that environment and being surrounded by the nation's top swimmers?

It was so inspiring to be surrounded by ‘the best of the best’ in Australian swimming. Being on the pool deck with athletes I've looked up to was amazing, they were really approachable, very grounded and happy to chat. I felt very grateful just to be there.

did u fir t t in l d in i in and at what point did you realise it was something you wanted to pursue seriously and competitively?

I actually started swimming because I suffered a traumatic brain injury as a baby. Swimming

focus interview

lessons were recommended as a form of physical therapy, and it continues to help improve my balance, coordination and strength. Over time, what began as rehabilitation turned into something I genuinely loved.

I was also really fortunate to have some amazing older swimmers at my club who took me under their wing. They encouraged me, made me feel valued and inspired me to keep improving. As I started progressing through regional and state competitions, I realised I wanted to see how far I could take my sport. I love the challenge of continually improving and the discipline that swimming has taught me, so pursuing it competitively became a natural next step. What does a typical training week look like for you? We hear your brother also competed at the 2026 National Age Swimming Championships, what's it like training together?

As I live with the longterm e ects of a traumatic brain injury and also have a heart condition, managing my health is just as important for me, as the training itself.

A typical training week involves multiple pool sessions, along with making sure I'm looking after my nutrition, sleep and overall wellbeing outside of training. There's a lot that goes into preparing for training and racing due to my health, beyond just the time spent in the pool. As I live with the long-term effects of a traumatic brain injury and also have a heart condition, managing my health is just as important for me, as the training itself. I have some amazing health practitioners that treat me weekly, and I’m incredibly grateful for their wisdom, expertise and support. Everyday, I have to work around my symptoms, so I've learnt to listen to my body and adapt when needed. struggle with significant weakness, balance and coordination, dizziness etc. It is a constant challenge, but it's also taught me resilience, patience and the importance of making the

most of every training session and everyday in general.

My younger brother, Flynn, is also a national-level swimmer and we train in the same squad, so we spend a lot of time together in and out of the pool. While we compete in our own events, we're always cheering each other on and celebrating each other's successes. It's something we're both really grateful for, and I think having that support within our family has played a big role in helping us both pursue our goals. Not many siblings have the opportunity to share experiences like competing at national championships, so it's something we definitely cherish.

What have been some personal highlights of your swimming career so far?

Competing at the 2026 Australian Commonwealth ames Trials is definitely the biggest highlight so far! Other highlights are competing in ational finals, swimming consistent PBs in North Coast, NSW and National meets, setting records at Uni Nationals, and the steady progress despite the daily health

obstacles I face. Every time I drop even a small amount of time, it feels rewarding because I know how much work goes into it.

Now that you've experienced competition at the highest domestic level, have you set your sights on any new goals for the future?

Absolutely! I will be competing at the 2026 Australian Short Course Championships later this year, and I would like to broaden my competition experiences moving forward. Longterm, I’m excited to be on the journey to see how far swimming can take me. Short-term, it's about making continual improvements in my times and enjoying the process, whilst managing my health.

Finally, after such an exciting year in the pool, what are you most looking forward to in the year ahead, in and out of the pool?

In the pool, I'm excited for more racing, dropping more time, continuing to improve my technique and chasing my aspirations. Outside of swimming, I'm looking forward to balancing life, sharing amazing experiences with my family and friends, and just recharging after a big season. Swimming has taught me so much about resilience, and I feel blessed for the experiences that I’ve had and the incredible people that I’ve met.

Thanks Iesha.

FSelf-Employed and Planning to Borrow? Tax Time Ma ers More an You ink

or many self-employed Australians, tax time is about one thing: paying as little tax as legally possible. But if you’re planning to apply for a home loan, investment loan or business finance in the next 2 months, there is another consideration that often gets overlooked. The way you prepare your tax return can have a significant impact on your ability to borrow money.

Across the Mid orth Coast, many business owners, tradies, contractors and sole traders are enjoying strong demand. However, when it comes time to apply for finance, some are surprised to discover their taxable income doesn’t reflect the cash flow they actually earn. Lenders don’t assess borrowers based on how busy they are or what they believe they can afford. They rely heavily on documented income, and for self-employed applicants that usually means historical tax returns and financial statements. This creates a balancing act. Self-employment is a major part of the Australian economy. According to data based on Australian Bureau of tatistics figures, around . million Australian businesses are self-employed and operate without employees, representing almost two-thirds of all businesses in the country. From tradies and consultants to farmers and tourism operators, many business owners across the Mid orth Coast rely on their own enterprise to generate income, making taxtime preparation particularly important when

planning to borrow.

Many business owners claim legitimate business deductions available under tax law, however, it’s important to understand that taxable income is one of the factors lenders considered when assessing a loan application. While legitimate deductions may reduce the tax bill, it can also reduce the income a lender uses when assessing a loan application. The result Someone with a healthy business and strong cash flow may qualify to borrow less than they expected. f you expect to apply for finance in the coming year, its worth discussing your plans with your accountant and mortgage broker early. Understanding how lenders assess selfemployed income can help avoid surprises later in the process. The goal isn’t to pay more tax or less tax. t’s to understand how your financial position may be assessed if you plan to seek finance in the future.

An accountant can help ensure your tax affairs are accurate and compliant while explaining the impact of deductions on your taxable income. A mortgage broker can help you understand how different lenders assess self-employed income and what documentation will be required. Every lender has different policies. ome may consider add-backs for certain non-cash expenses such as depreciation, while others may assess income differently depending on the structure of the business and year on year fluctuations in income.

Preparation is often the key and business owners

who keep clean financial records, separate personal and business expenses, lodge returns on time and maintain up-to-date financial statements are generally in a stronger position when seeking finance.

t is also important to remember that lenders often want to see consistency. arge fluctuations in income from year to year can lead to additional questions during the assessment process.

For those planning a major purchase in the next six to twelve months, do not wait until you have found a property or a contract is signed before seeking advice. A quick discussion with your accountant and broker before shopping for your next property may provide valuable insights into how your financial position will appear to a lender and give you a realistic picture of your borrowing capacity. etting the right advice gives you the power to make informed decisions that align with your broader financial objectives. Tax time is often viewed as the end of the financial year. For self-employed Australians considering borrowing, it may be more useful to see it as the beginning of the next one. A little planning today could make the difference between getting the loan you need and finding out too late that your paperwork tells a different story from your business success.

MICHAEL WARD

For more than two decades, Michael Ward has dedicated countless hours to helping communities through some of Australia's most challenging emergencies and was recently awarded the Emergency Services Medal in recognition of his outstanding service with the NSW SES.

Hi Michael, congratulations on receiving the Emergency Services Medal which recognises more than two decades of service!

in ac t n u fir t in d t NSW SES in 2002, what inspired you to become a volunteer?

t was an unexpected honour to find out that I was nominated and ultimately approved for the Emergency ervices Medal. t is definitely something that I wasn’t thinking about when I joined the SES back in 2002.

After graduating from Newcastle University, (I am a Chartered Professional Engineer (Civil) and Registered Land Surveyor) and working for several years in Sydney, I began thinking about what I could do to contribute back to the community and get out and do something different. Whilst I joined initially from a desire to help others, over time I realised I’ve gained just as much from being a member of SES as I’ve given.

I moved to Port Macquarie in 2005 and transferred my membership to the Port Macquarie Unit. The initial commitment

soon grew into leadership as over the years I progressed through the SES ranks; becoming a training officer, Deputy nit Commander, and served six years as Unit Commander with the Port Macquarie Hastings Unit before stepping down (as Unit Commander) to spend more time with my family.

I maintain my active membership as a Leading Senior Operator and Lead Trainer and Assessor.

What does the ESM recognition mean to you personally?

I think the most humbling aspect is that other members thought I was worthy enough that they put in the time and effort to prepare and submit the application and provide support to the application. Personally, I have never undertaken roles or rescues for the recognition, however it is always appreciated when it is given.

I still remember receiving a card from a lady that we rescued from a motor vehicle accident on the old highway. I spent a protracted time lying on the pavement talking to her and reassuring her whilst the vehicle was on its side, as the team around me cut and removed various parts of the vehicle to release her.

You've been involved in some of u tralia t i nificant r c nt emergency events, including the Northern i r d cl n a i and t lac u r u fir r t r an nt that have stayed with you throughout your career?

I have been fortunate over the years to be able to attend several significant events and provide assistance to communities in need, and grow and share experiences along the way. There have been several notable experiences however. I look back at some of the “once in a generation” events that I was Unit Commander for, including 200+ days of bushfire only put out by a minor flood , leading the unit through the CO D years, the major flooding in 202 and a microburst that hit the CBD in 202 .

Notwithstanding this, the moments that stay are those spent side by side with fellow members supporting our community in times of need and the life long friendships that are forged during these times.

During the 2022 Northern Rivers d u r r c ni d it t i i n r ndati n f r

Courage. What do you remember most about that deployment and the challenges responders faced?

The 2022 Northern Rivers Floods was a significant event.

Originally was contacted as Flood escue Coverage was required at Macksville and ambucca for a 2 hour period over the high tide. Mark Anderson and myself packed our bags and travelled north expecting to be back late the following afternoon.

The following day after hearing the widespread flooding and rescues around the ismore area, we headed north to provide flood rescue response for what we thought was another 2 hours. We found ourselves deployed to Mullumbimby and the deployment quickly turned into a week. ome nights we were wading through waist-deep water at midnight helping people get to safety.

ome of the challenges included power and communications failing mobile phone towers don’t operate without power and then the isolation due to flood water. We attempted to get home on the second day, however with the highway flooded we returned to Mullumbimby and got to work assisting where we could. aving experienced the flooding in Port Macquarie 202 we were able to apply lessons learnt to the orthern ivers Floods.

e experiences and connections formed throughout this journey have been invaluable. I even met my wife Serena through SES volunteering, and we now have two young children.

You've often spoken about the friendships and sense of purpose that come from volunteering. How important has the SES family been throughout your journey?

ou cannot work alone. look back at lots of things that have undertaken and there are people that have been with me all the way. t is humbling that was singled out for the E M given the commitment that is also shown by many members. The experiences and connections formed throughout this journey have been invaluable. even met my wife erena through E volunteering, and we now have two young children.

Beyond frontline operations, you've played a major role in developing rescue capabilities and mentoring other volunteers, what do you enjoy most about helping others build their skills and c nfid nc

nowledge is power shared knowledge is all powerful. There is no point in holding on to all the information and training and not sharing it with others. have always felt that the best thing you can do is make yourself redundant; not so you have to leave, but so there is always options.

With training and professional development there are more people that have the skills and

confidence to undertake the many roles that are within the E , and therefore the burden doesn’t always fall on the same people.

have had the pleasure of watching many of our members grow into roles and undertake more responsibility that has ultimately provided the stepping stone in their professional lives outside E and enabled them to gain roles that otherwise they wouldn’t have.

Finally, after more than 20 years of service, what continues to inspire you to put on the orange overalls and answer the call when your community needs help?

Port Macquarie E is a rescue unit. This means that in addition to our core roles of floods, storms and tsunamis we are the rescue unit for Port Macquarie covering eneral and escue which includes motor vehicle accidents, industrial and domestic rescue, large and companion animal rescue , flood rescue and vertical rescue. We have a wide and weird variety of jobs and that works to keep members motivated.

enjoy working side by side with fellow members assisting people in their times of need. recently attended a rescue challenge and one of the ideas that they discussed was to Be the rescuer you want to see . This resonated with the professionalism that we have always strived for to ensure that we are there for our community.

Thanks Michael.

THE GUTS, GRIT AND GROUNDWORK OF REMARKABLE REGIONAL ENTREPRENEURS, INNOVATORS, LEADERS AND GAME CHANGERS.

When adversity struck close to home, Danny Schouten chose action over helplessness. What began as a simple e ort to protect his local community has grown into a national movement with Shark Bite Kits now installed on beaches across Australia. Ahead of his appearance at Luminosity Youth Summit, Danny shares how one person’s decision to step up can create lasting change; and why looking a er your mates might just save a life.

What started as a way to help your local community has now seen Shark Bite Kits installed on beaches across Australia. Did you ever imagine your idea would grow to this scale, and what has surprised you most about the journey?

When installed that first kit at orth Wall with ai and some of his close mates, never imagined it would be anything more than a few kits in our local area. ow there’s over 2 0 installed around Australia.

From the conversations ’ve had with hundreds of people from coastal communities, many unfortunately have similar stories of lost loved ones or close calls with sharks. All of these

people are just as passionate as am to make a change and put these kits in place to protect their friends, families and community. t’s been surreal to see how quickly the project has grown, but really not surprising, considering our Aussie nature of wanting to look after your mates’.

Kai’s survival depended on quick-thinking people and a fair amount of luck. Your mission is to make sure survival is never left to chance again. What drives you to keep pushing this message forward?

That’s the goal. A tourniquet applied within the first few minutes can drastically increase someone’s chance of survival before emergency services arrive. didn’t invent the tourniquet, ’m just making sure the right resources are in the right place, at any time of

day, so that anyone, regardless of training, can be the difference in saving someone’s life. What drives me… honestly, if all the time, energy and work that goes into these kits can save even just one person, then it’s 100% worth it. After what happened at Coogee recently, it already is.

This recent shark attack in Coogee once again highlighted the importance of immediate access to life-saving equipment. When you hear stories of your kits being used in real emergencies, what goes through your mind?

This is the first time one of my kits has been used to help save someone’s life. I’m glad it was there and used to help save Leah, but my heart completely sank for her and her family. The last thing I ever want to hear is that a kit has to be used - I’d rather they sit there untouched forever. But over the last few weeks, I’ve just felt incredibly grateful for everyone involved in saving her life. Grateful for the lifeguard who rescued her, the doctor and nurse who were on the beach and used the kit to control the bleeding, the Coogee community supporting her and her family, and Matt Lawson, who took the initiative to install the shark bite kit for his community.

Your Luminosity keynote focuses on how adversity can become a catalyst for meaningful action. What advice would

you give young people who are facing challenges and wondering how they can turn a difficult experience into something positive?

You don’t need to do something massive to make a difference. It usually starts small, just stepping up when something needs doing. A lot of the time, the difficult moments are exactly what show you where something is missing or what needs to change.

A er what happened to my mates Kai and Toby, it made me realise how much survival can come down to timing, people, and luck. at’s what pushed me to do something about it.

After what happened to my mates Kai and Toby, it made me realise how much survival can come down to timing, people, and luck. That’s what pushed me to do something about it. Surviving on sheer luck isn’t good enough. I want people in the future to have better odds, not just leave it to chance. From there, it wasn’t about trying to fix everything to do with sharks, it was just about making sure I'm doing what I can to help with the knowledge and skills I have. Shift the focus from what the world can do for you, to what you can do for the people around you. For the young people attending

Luminosity Youth Summit this July, what do you hope they take away from your story about leadership, community, and the impact one person can have when they choose to step up and make a difference?

Community is so important. Take a good look around you and appreciate where you live and the people in your community. We’re blessed to live in such a beautiful place, but what really matters is looking out for the people around you. If something needs doing, step up and do it. That’s where leadership starts.

One of the greatest examples of how one person can make a difference is captured in Paul Kelly’s song ‘From Little Things Big Things Grow’. Vincent Lingiari stood up for what he believed in and helped create lasting change for his people. If you’re passionate about something, and you know in your heart it’s the right thing to do, don’t stop until you succeed and the world is a better place because of it.

Thanks Danny.

CLARITY CHECKLIST FOR THE NEW FINANCIAL YEAR

Every year, around this time, I find myself wishing clients a happy new financial year’. get some funny looks, but genuinely think uly deserves more credit than it gets.

We mark birthdays, we mark ew ear’s Eve, but uly offers a unique opportunity to stop and check in on your money, your plans, and whether they still match where you’re at. encourage you to pour yourself a cup of tea and work through our Clarity Checklist.

Check your super contributions

From uly, the amount you can contribute to super before tax, your concessional contributions’, rises to 2, 00 a year. f you’ve paid off the mortgage, the kids have moved out, or your income has settled into a more predictable rhythm, this is worth a second look. Many people set their super contributions years ago and never revisit them. A higher cap might mean an opportunity to put more away and reduce your tax at the same time.

t's also worth checking whether you have unused cap amounts available from previous years. f your super balance is under 00,000, you may be able to carry forward unused concessional cap amounts from up to five years ago, on top of this year's 2, 00. For some people, that adds up to a much bigger contribution window than they realise.

Review your insurance

f you’re debt-free, congratulations, that’s no small thing. But it could be also worth checking whether the insurance you still hold, inside or outside your super, still earns its keep.

Premiums tend to climb as we get older. f the original reason for that policy a mortgage, dependent children, a particular risk no longer applies, it might be costing you more than it’s protecting.

Take stock of your net position

Once a year, recommend to clients that they sit down and look at the full picture everything they own, everything they owe, and how that’s shifted since last year.

Has your position improved? Stayed steady? lipped a little Whatever the answer, it tells you what to do next, whether that’s increasing your contributions, paying down debt faster, or simply confirming you’re on track.

If you’re drawing a pension, your minimum changes

f you receive an income stream from your super, known as an account-based pension, your minimum payment is recalculated every uly, based on your balance on that date and your age.

f you turned 6 this financial year, your minimum jumps from to of your balance. The same step-up happens again at 6 and 0 . t's a detail that's easy

to miss, but getting it wrong can have tax consequences, so it's worth confirming with your fund or adviser.

Keep an eye on the Age Pension thresholds

For anyone close to the Centrelink asset test limits, there are other dates worth knowing. The lower asset threshold is indexed on uly, and the cut-off limits are indexed three times a year 20 March, uly and 20 eptember.

f you’re near the Centrelink thresholds, even a small change in your assets, or the indexed figures themselves, can affect what you receive. Before making any decisions, check the updated thresholds for this financial year on our website at www.directadvisers.com.au

When lawyers refer to ‘common law’, in essence that means the law based on the myriad of legal cases that have been decided in the jurisdiction, as distinct from legislation.

The common law is wonderfully grey. There are no hard and fast absolute principles with which to absolutely predict any judicial outcome, even where supported by a precedent, and there are precedents on both sides of almost any common law dispute. Statute is, by and large, intended to be unambiguous - black and white.

The diminishing dominance of common law in favour of legislation is a continuing trend in the Australian Courts. The Hon Justice Michael Kirby AC CMG (as he then was) in an article published in the Statute Law Review in 2003 wrote:

The world of common law principle is in retreat. It now circles in the orbit of statute. Where statute speaks there is no escaping the duty to give meaning to its words. That is what I, and every other judge in the countries of the world that observe the rule of law, spend most of our time doing.

Whilst more modern statutory interpretation cases are largely unsurprising (and dare I say somewhat boring , one can find entertaining examples of interpretation arguments from the 19th and 20th century from other jurisdictions. The Official ecrets Act 20, made it an

BLACK AND WHITE MAKES GREY

offence to obstruct a member of His Majesty's forces “in the vicinity of” a prohibited place. The defendant in this case protested near a military base (a prohibited place) but was arrested while inside the base, actively obstructing a guard. The defendant argued he wasn't "in the vicinity of" the base, but rather "in" it, claiming the law did not apply to him. He lost.

US Federal Law increases penalties for anyone who uses... a firearm during a drug-trafficking crime”. In Smith v United States (1993), Smith was tried for buying cocaine by trading a MAC10 machine gun. The Supreme Court ruled that because the defendant traded the gun for drugs, he legally used the firearm. The judges could not agree, with one Judge pointing out that in normal English, trading a gun for drugs means using it as a medium of exchange, not "using a firearm in the criminal sense. e lost.

In McBoyle v United States (1931), Mr. McBoyle was charged under the National Motor Vehicle Theft Act for flying a stolen airplane across state lines. The law defined motor vehicle as “including an automobile, automobile truck, motor cycle, or any other self-propelled vehicle not designed for running on rails." The Supreme Court determined that a plane is not a motor vehicle, and that the statute did not apply to flying machines. e won

Under the UK's Street Offences Act 1959, it was a crime to solicit "in a street or public place" so prostitutes would stand inside on private ground

and tap on their windows to solicit men walking down the street. In Smith v Hughes (1960), the judges reasoned that the purpose of the Act was to stop prostitutes bothering people on the street. Even though the women were indoors, they were held liable because their solicitations were aimed at the public outside. They lost.

In an Australian example, R v Wilson; ex parte Kisch (High Court of Australia, 1934), Egon Kisch, a Czech journalist and anti-fascist activist, arrived in Australia and was subjected to a dictation test. The dictation test was an infamous legal loophole introduced in the Immigration Restriction Act 1901 to enforce the White Australia policy. Migrants could be excluded by forcing them to transcribe a 50-word passage in a European language. If an immigrant failed the test, they would be refused entry. Kisch was fluent in many languages, but failed the dictation test because the officer gave it to him in Scottish Gaelic, ensuring that he failed. The High Court ultimately ruled that Scottish Gaelic was not a "European language". He won.

There are literally thousands of current statutory instruments applicable in NSW, and the Commonwealth jurisdictions, and parliament passes more every year. Despite seeming ‘black and white’, specific sections, subsections, and regulations in legislative instruments may not actually say what they purport to (or mean to), and may be subject to challenge on literal or purposive interpretations.

FROM ZEN-YA DESIGNS FOR LIFE

CHOOSING A SOFA THAT TRULY FITS THE WAY WE LIVE

Asofa is never just a sofa. It is where we stretch out at the end of the day, where friends and family gather with coffee in hand, where children bounce in from the beach, and where everyday life unfolds in the most comfortable way possible. As a local interior decorator, I often tell clients that choosing the right lounge is one of the most important decisions they will make for their home. It sets the tone for the room, shapes the way the space functions and has to work hard for years to come.

When people begin shopping for a new sofa, they often start with style. While appearance is certainly important, it’s better to take a slightly broader view. A beautiful lounge needs to suit the scale of the room, complement the architecture of the home and also support the way the household actually lives. A family of five with dogs, sandy feet, and weekend visitors will need something very different from a couple downsizing or creating a quiet coastal retreat. The best sofa is the one that feels as if it was tailor-made for the home it lives in.

In coastal homes especially, I love pieces that feel relaxed but polished. Soft lines, generous proportions, and natural textures often work beautifully in this part of the world. But equally important is durability. Life near the

coast has its own rhythm: open windows, salty air, sandy shoes, and a constant flow of people moving in and out. That is why I am such a strong advocate for Australianmade lounges, particularly those that can be customised in one of the stunning Warwick fabrics available. The ability to tailor a piece to both the home and the lifestyle is invaluable, and it allows you to create something that feels personal rather than generic or mass produced.

There is also something very reassuring about choosing Australian-made furniture.

These pieces are built to a high standard, with an emphasis on craftsmanship that can be felt in every detail. Frames are made with care, cushions are designed for comfort, and the overall construction is intended to last. For homeowners, that means fewer compromises and better long-term value.

Comfort is another area where quality really shows. Pay close attention to what is inside the sofa, not just the outside. Durable Dunlop foam is one of those details that makes a genuine difference in everyday use. It provides the kind of support that holds its shape while still feeling comfortable and welcoming. That balance matters. No one wants to sink into a sofa that loses its form too quickly, and no one wants cushions that feel flat and lifeless. Good foam helps a lounge remain inviting, structured, and dependable.

Fabric selection, of course, is just as important. This is where Warwick fabrics offer such a wonderful advantage. The range is broad, beautiful, and practical, which makes it easier to find something that complements the rest of the home while also standing up to real life. In busy households, commercial-grade fabrics are worth their weight in gold. They are designed to resist sagging and pilling, which means the lounge keeps its fresh appearance for much longer.

I like to remind clients that a sofa should never be chosen in isolation. It needs to sit comfortably within the broader scheme of the room. Consider the rug beneath it, the coffee table in front of it, the lighting around it, and the artwork or cabinetry nearby. If the room is large, a generous sectional may create a sense of ease and connection. In a more compact space, a streamlined design can offer the same sense of comfort without overwhelming the room. And don’t forget…it needs to be able to fit through your front door

A sofa should invite you in, hold its shape, and suit the way you live. When all those elements come together, the result is more than a furnishing, it becomes the heart of the home. If you’d like more advice or help choosing your next sofa, drop into the showroom at 164 Lake Road (opposite Repco) and try a few out for yourself.
