MARGO SMITH KATIE MARTIN Baked by Katie ROD POWELL Hire Port Tell us about your business and its role in the wedding industry. Hire Port is a wedding and event hire company run by myself, my sister Jo and my son, Shane. We have owned the business coming up 22 years in April. We play a pretty important role in our couples’ wedding days, often being the first point of contact to get their wedding plans under way. We assist with hire items for the ceremony and then move on to making their reception one to remember. What to you enjoy most about weddings? We really enjoy being able to be involved in one of the most important days of a couple’s life. It is such a special and exciting day for them, and to know that we have played a small part in their special day gives us great satisfaction. Has much changed with weddings over the past five years? Over the past five years we have noticed that marquee weddings have certainly increased. The convenience of being able to host a wedding on a beautiful property owned by parents or friends is definitely very appealing to more and more couples these days. What advice do you have for future brides and grooms to make sure their day is special? Start planning as soon as you can. The sooner you can book the essentials in, the sooner you can start paying them off!
Tell us about your business and its role in the wedding industry. Baker of all things sweet and pretty! I enjoy designing cakes for my clients that they not only want to eat, but they also have a beautiful memory of a cake created just for their wedding. I have been around the wedding industry since I started in hospitality over 10 years ago and have worked behind the scenes in event management, styling and now creating tasty cakes. Being able to design a cake just for the couple is truly special and a rewarding experience each time. What do you enjoy most about weddings? Honestly, I love all moments about weddings! From the first time you start looking for a place to share your love with your closest family and friends ... down to the little details like place cards and flowers! Being a part of a wedding is very special, and I cherish the couples I’m lucky to work with when creating their cake. Has much changed with weddings over the past five years? It’s always changing in this industry - new styles, fashion, food. It’s got to keep moving with the times and stay fresh. However, the one thing I have noticed is couples really creating a joyful celebration for everyone involved - staying away from tradition if they feel it won’t work and making new ones with those closest to them. And, capturing moments shared on the day, with so much more love, tears and laughter. What advice do you have for future brides and grooms to make sure their day is special? I always like to remind them that the day is ultimately about both of them and the love they have built together. If they show that to all their family and friends ... all the other little things won’t matter!
Celebrant Tell us about your business and its role in the wedding industry. I’m Margo Smith, a busy marriage celebrant who performs 80 weddings a year. My role in a couple’s wedding day is to ensure the ceremony is heartfelt and memorable, surpassing their wedding dreams. What do you enjoy most about weddings? I like to meet my couples to chat about the type of ceremony they would like. I help them through every step of the process, from completing all the official paperwork to writing a ceremony that reflects who they are, and making their vision of their wedding become a reality. Has much changed with weddings over the past five years? Obviously the biggest change in the wedding industry has been the introduction of same-sex marriages, and I was so thrilled when Australia supported marriage equality. Since then I’ve been lucky enough to officiate many of these ceremonies, and I feel honoured to play an important part in these ceremonies, with people often having waited years to be lawfully wed. What advice do you have for future brides and grooms to make sure their day is special? I always advise my couples to relax and enjoy their day. I remind the bride to smile as she walks down the aisle - walking towards what will be one of the most amazing experiences of her and partner’s lives. People often comment just how fleeting their day was, so I ask the couples to pause to remember the moment - and let that feeling really register. Hopefully they’ll look back on their day, and it will be one of their greatest treasured memories.

80s Revised Who is 80s Revised? The name is new, but two members of the band have been playing all your favourite ‘80s Rock/Pop for the past three years as the duo ‘Chill Factor’. Now we have two new members to form 80s Revised. We are a four piece band: lead guitar, drums and vocals, with the assistance of other instruments in backing tracks when required - and we have a light show. How did you come up with the concept? We love ‘80s music, especially Rock songs. We realised that the majority of crowds dance and enjoy their night listening to this genre. Why choose the ‘80s? Did we accidentally give out our age? We grew up in the ‘80s listening to those songs riding on roller skates. ‘80s music is still currently popular amongst most crowds at most venues, and people enjoy dressing up. We enjoy creating a fun atmosphere; playing ‘80s music achieves this. Who are some of the artists you cover? AC/DC, Choirboys, Noiseworks, Mondo Rock, INXS, Dragon, Screaming Jets, Divinyls, The Angels, Baby Animals, Cold Chisel, Billy Idol, Whitney Houston, Madonna, Michael Jackson/Jacksons, Wham, The Proclaimers, Pat Benatar, Cyndi Lauper, Bryan Adams, Bon Jovi and many more. 80s Revised - available now for bookings - any private function, party, event or venue.

hat does Love Bus Kombis specialise in? Weddings are our main focus, along with formals, but we do special occasions like wedding anniversaries and birthdays visiting our local breweries and wineries. We also provide a special package, offering a ride in the Kombi to one of the many special spots our area has to offer, where a gourmet picnic by “Huddle and Graze” will be beautifully set up. It could be a wedding proposal or a group of girlfriends getting together! Introduce us to “Magnolia”. She has a very interesting backstory! How and where did you find her ... and how did she end up in Australia? I had been looking for a 15 window Kombi, which is the rarest of all Kombis, so my search included other right hand drive countries. I found a VW forum online and located the Kombi in Johannesburg, which resulted in negotiations and the decision to purchase. The Kombi was previously used by a South African orphanage to ferry children to and from school each day. It had been personalised with hand painted flowers and hand prints by the children of the orphanage. It also came with padlocks and chains on the doors!

COMMUNICATION! Behind the scenes my wife has established very efficient booking processes, to ensure the bride and groom are across everything BEFORE the day. We incorporate things like communicating with the photographer about the agreed time frames with the Kombis. We have written documents that are filled out, so there is no room for any errors, and this makes the couple feel confident that everything will run smoothly. We also offer to pick up any drinks before the day and have them on ice, so they have one less thing to think about on the day. We supply golf umbrellas and clear umbrellas for any weather. We have been driving brides and grooms around for five years now and have never had any problems - everyone is relaxed and happy! How did you come up with the name “Love Bus Kombis”? We wanted the Kombi to provide a service that continues to support and connect people through happy occasions, while honouring the history of what Magnolia was used for in South Africa with the orphaned children. It is also a reference to the old “love bug”. Where can we contact you/find more info? Web www.lovebuskombis.com.au Email mitchell@lovebuskombis.com.au Mobile 0413 277 563. Thanks Mitchell. lease introduce yourself and describe what you do. I’m Margo Smith, and I’m a Commonwealth registered marriage celebrant who’s had the privilege to perform close to 600 weddings in the past decade. I believe I have the best job in the world - no one beats me for job satisfaction! Where did the inspiration come from to become a celebrant? I always knew that one day I would be a celebrant, as I’d listened to my mum perform weddings for years prior to me training. I saw firsthand that Mum’s role as a celebrant was vital to the couples’ happiness on their day, and how important that role was. I feel honoured to now have that role in ensuring my couples always have a memorable ceremony to cherish for their lifetime. It doesn’t matter where you’re from, or what your budget is - I believe everyone deserves a beautiful wedding. I’ve been lucky enough to perform an elegant ceremony at the Packer estate, Ellerston, one week, and the following week I married a couple at a rehabilitation centre. Both were equally special. Weddings are a beautiful celebration. Can you tell us about some of your most memorable? The ceremonies I remember the most are the heartfelt ones - and that has more to do with the happiness of our couple, and nothing to do with age of the marriage partners or money spent, for example. My oldest bride was 89, and she cried with joy - as did all their family and friends! In fact, most of my couples shed a tear or two - usually the grooms, who assured me prior that that would never happen! Guests
are often overwhelmed with happiness and comment to me later that they could “feel the love” - and I know I’ve done well! The fact that I love my job shows and is reaffirmed when guests contact me later to ask me to perform their impending ceremony, knowing they’re in good hands. You have a busy year planned with your weddings. How do you keep your presentations fresh? Every wedding I perform is personal and unique to my couple, to ensure the ceremony reflects who the marriage partners are. I encourage couples to write their own vows if they would like - but it doesn’t matter if that’s not their style. I respect all choices, and I’m open to any suggestions my couples may have. I offer them many options, from how they would like to walk down the aisle, to how they would like to be announced at the end of the ceremony. I have a lengthy questionnaire to ensure the ceremony is tailor made for that particular couple. I’m always researching and updating my words to reflect each individual couple and their personality. You also do same sex marriage ceremonies. Are there any differences between them and men/women marriages? I was thrilled with the introduction of same sex ceremonies and have performed many since that memorable day. I actively campaigned to ensure marriage equality was granted in Australia, and there were many tears when the yes vote came in. It was me that had to be consoled during the first same sex ceremony I officiated at - I was so very pleased for the lovely gentlemen, who had patiently waited 45

EMILY Hickson I’m a creative and adventurous lady from the Port Macquarie region. I perform weddings from Forster to South West Rocks, including respective inland areas. I remember the moment I decided to do my Certificate in Celebrancy vividly - I overheard a conversation between two women about an upcoming wedding. They were speaking about the difficulty of finding a celebrant, as their first choice was booked out. So I thought, "That’s it, this area needs an enthusiastic, savvy, relatable celebrant" - so I did it, and I’ve loved every iconic wedding since! It’s important to me that no two ceremonies I deliver are the same. Why? Because no two couples are the same. I love all there is about love stories. I take the time to learn about you as a couple, your life together, the reasons you love each other and proudly craft a ceremony that brings your love story to life. Booking me means booking a celebrant who brings a creative, fresh and professional vibe to your wedding ceremony. I will ensure that you can relax and enjoy your wedding day, knowing that it will be performed with nothing but a deep respect for you both - showcasing your love on your special day.

ffering wedding and reception styling, a vintage caravan bar/ coffee cart, a huge range of items for hire and so much more … Kelly shares her passion for the events industry and the story behind August and Lucy … Hi Kelly. When was your business established - and what’s the meaning behind the name? August & Lucy was actually first established in 2015 by two lovely ladies from Brisbane; I purchased the business in 2016. The meaning behind the name pays tribute to the original owners, as August is one of their birth months and Lucy is the other’s nickname. I’m a sucker for sentiment, so I think the name fits. My family and I recently moved to Port Macquarie, and I just had my second child, and I always wanted to get into the wedding and events industry after getting married myself. With what I thought was so much time on my hands, I found Gilbert and decided to take the leap. At the time, my husband thought I was totally crazy. I think he still kind of does! Your caravan, Gilbert, sounds like an interesting character! What’s his story? Gilbert is a mid ’60s vintage plywood caravan, all original - except for the windows, of course - which were made in Grafton. ure, your style and your personal taste are very important when it comes to buying a suit, but to choose the right suit for your wedding you need to consider some factors, such as season, time, formal or informal, and the location of the ceremony.
Both the Essence and Discovery 2 offer a personal and intimate venue for either a beautiful wedding or the perfect venue for your buck’s or hen’s party! This year’s wedding suit trends. Light grey and blues are still the front runner this year, but we are starting to see hues of pink coming through in the wedding suit scene. For a beach wedding, it’s obviously important to stay cool while still looking smart, but you need to have the right balance. Linen suits - casual styles in light tones with softer constructions are still a strong choice for a beach wedding. To achieve a more casual look, forget the jacket and opt for a matching linen vest. Country style weddings are very popular. Suits in blue tones look particularly good in these settings. The blue colour finds a balance between the formality of ceremonies at the wedding and the formality of rituals. The navy suit is very versatile and flatters most complexions. It will also contrast with most surroundings, giving you a more defined silhouette. Garden or vintage weddings - consider an entirely different alternative to the traditional suit. You can try out just a vest and roll up sleeves, or add braces and a bow tie for a rustic, vintage look. Black wedding suits - black is a high-formality colour, mostly suited to formal and black tie weddings. Ultimately, whatever you choose, regardless of colour or style, wear it with purpose and confidence - and remember that the best accessory a gentleman can have is a smile. 59 Greater Port Macquarie focus

STYLING with LAUREN VESTEY
From modern upstyles to romantic waves and detailed braids, we are sharing the most on trend styles to help you find a look that is bride worthy, yet still feels like “you.” Even if you’re not entirely sure how you want to wear your hair on the big day, you probably have a general idea of whether you’d like to have it up or down, extensions or on the shorter side. Living Doll is here to get you started … CHIGNONS Brides are opting for a more effortless vibe with upstyles that are asymmetrical or have a softer, almost messy finish. If you have layers, leave them out to create an even softer look around the face.
BR AIDS Braided wedding hairstyles are hotter than ever - and it’s no coincidence when you take into account the surge of rustic-themed wedding affairs. However, when styled the right way, they can also be used for more formal settings as well. Halo braids, French plaits, undercut braids, braided buns, and fishtail plaits; however you want to wear them, this is one long-lasting trend that’s not going anywhere.
WAVES The trick to amazing waves is longevity - they need to be able to stand up to hours of posing for photos, embracing loved ones and busting a move on the dance floor - so don’t be shy when applying product, and bring hairspray to the reception for touch-ups. Balanced with some subtle sombré highlights to add definition and appeal, this look will last a life time.
RETRO-GLAM If you’re inspired by vintage wedding details, 38 Coast focus 24 Coffs Special Edition focus
borrow your hairstyle from a different decade, too, with curls and twists that would make any pin-up starlet jealous.
PONYTAIL Love wearing your hair up but a traditional chignon is just too formal for you? Dress up a basic ponytail with intricate curls and twists.
SHORT So long extensions are not you - minimalist pixies never looked so good. We’re psyched to see more brides embracing them on their wedding day as well!
HAIR ACCESSORIES From traditional veils, small tiaras, to gorgeous diamanté accessories, there is a look right for everyone. But if it is simply not your style, the ever-awesome flower crown isn’t going anywhere. We’ve used big blooms in hair for a while now, but it’s time for the pretty little ones. From dainty daisy crowns and tiny wildflowers dotted through your halo braid, to baby’s breath plaits, this is an easy trend to carry off, and a cool new twist on the muchloved fresh flower hairstyle. Hope this has given you some inspiration for one of the most special day of your life. XO Doll.s

KIM PIPER Celebrant As a Celebrant, the greatest reward is being part of such a magical day ... A part of the memories a couple are making and collecting in their life together. I love that people I have married along the way still keep in touch years afterwards. They send me photos of the babies they have had, stop me in the supermarket to tell me the latest news, and in general they often continue to make me part of their families and lives. They share me with their friends and family members when a celebrant is needed. I have even received flowers from a bride on her anniversary, because she was so happy! It doesn’t get better than that! My ceremonies are written for each individual couple, so no two are the same. They are unique, just like the couple and their love story.

Lucy Williams met her dream man whilst living and working overseas; he was from Milford Haven in Wales and she was from Coffs Harbour, Australia.
T
hey didn’t let distance get in their way though, navigating stints of living in different countries and ultimately coming together here in Coffs to tie the knot surrounded by their loved ones. We got Lucy to tell us all about their love story and their beautiful beachfront wedding. Hi Lucy. You got married recently; congratulations! Can you tell us about how you and your hubby met? Thank you so much! Answering these questions has brought back so many amazing memories. Matty and I actually met at work. I had transferred to Malaysia in January 2015. A few weeks after my arrival, Matty and I were first introduced at an Australia Day BBQ. Matty was the token Welsh guy invited to the BBQ! It wasn’t until later that year, a group of us from work met in Singapore for the F1, and that’s where it all began. Was there a moment in your relationship that you realised he was “the one”? We went on our first holiday to Bali in December of 2015. Not only was our relationship new, and long-distance, I was working in Western Australia and Matty was still working in Malaysia. We were meeting at Bali airport, and the nerves and excitement to see him after seven weeks was out of this world. We had the most incredible eight nights in Seminyak! That’s when I thought, life doesn’t get better than this - I had met the absolute man of my dreams! While our families were from opposite sides of the world, mine from Coffs Harbour and Matty’s from Milford Haven in Wales and we were working in different countries, we just knew that no

OUTPOST Hair Outpost Hair is a luxury Aveda salon situated in Bellingen, with a team of talented hairdressers and makeup artists, some who have been specialising in weddings for over 15 years and have had the pleasure of working on weddings, in the salon and on location, for many brides in Bellingen and on the North Coast. The Outpost wedding team is able to work with any bridal party, big or small, and can create the perfect look to suit any style of wedding. Hanna and the Outpost team were not only a delight to have around on our wedding day, but saved the day when all of our floral headpieces froze overnight. Hanna handpicked flowers from the garden to match the bridesmaids’ dresses and created new headpieces on the spot! Her creativity saved our flower crisis, and her relaxed attitude kept us all cool, calm and collected. We loved our hair and had a beautiful morning getting ready - Ellie Pierotti. Hanna did a fantastic job on my hair for our wedding. We did a trial on my hen’s night, which helped me work out exactly what I wanted on the big day. She listened to what I wanted and executed it beautifully. I loved that Outpost came to us, so we had photos in our family home. My hairstyle was relaxed and not too formal, yet beautiful and elegant; I couldn’t recommended Hanna and Outpost more - Milli Divola.

Guests are encouraged to share, chat and feast, with couples able to customise their own menu and enjoy a wine tasting prior to select their drinks list for the big day. destination for loved up couples in the Coffs Harbour hinterland. We spoke to owners, Judy and Stuart, about the scenic outdoor venue that everyone’s talking about.
hanks for joining us, guys! Tell us why couples are seeking out Friday Creek Retreat for their destination wedding? Couples who are looking for an intimate venue with a laid back vibe and scenic backdrop love Friday Creek Retreat. They want to have exclusive use of the property, so they can have their reception and ceremony all in one location. Couples also get excited when we share that we provide accommodation and luxury amenities
as part of the package, which makes their wedding celebration a holiday getaway for all their guests. Describe for us the ceremony locations and reception options. Since couples have access to the entire property for their ceremony, many choose a location that feels special to them. Several of the couples have exchanged vows in front of the picturesque lily-adorned lake, and others have had beautiful ceremonies amongst the gum trees and on the island on the lake.

We sat down for a main meal and formal proceedings at 7pm and were all finished and ready for the fun to begin at 9pm, where those that wanted dessert could help themselves and the dancing would begin. Tell us about the location of your ceremony - why is this place special to you both? Having our wedding at Forster was our chosen location, as it has always been a spot for both families to holiday. Specifically, my family came every year to visit my grandma, who lives on One Mile Beach, which happened to be very convenient for my 87 year old grandmother, as she could nearly walk home from the reception at Cape Hawke Life Saving Club. For Ryan, his family always holidayed at Pacific Palms, so it was quite special for him as well. It was also special to me to have the ceremony at the Catholic Church, as I had completed all other sacraments - also, to get one up on the sisters and be in Grandma’s good books, as the other two didn’t get married in a Catholic Church! Whereabouts was your reception, and who did all the decorating? Our reception was at Cape Hawke Function Centre. We had a blank canvas with the most perfect back drop, being One Mile Beach. Most of the decorating was DIY jobs by me (with a lot of tips from Pinterest), my father, who made the photo booth backdrop himself and the table seating chart, Rosita’s flowers for the centrepieces, and family friends Janice and Ross, who made plant stands and the most beautiful flower arrangements for the church and bridal table. I had an army of help, especially my maid of honour and family, with my uncle and Ryan’s parents putting up lights and setting tables. I did have a few pieces hired from White Palms Wedding Hire to finish the look! Who were your bridesmaids and groomsmen? My bridesmaids included my older sisters, Helen and Louise, and my maid of honour was
my best friend from uni, Sally Buchanan. Ryan’s groomsmen were his two best friends from uni (Angus McVey and Matt Svarc), whom he couldn’t really split, so both were considered his best men (even though he made them go through a series of tests/games to deem a winner - Angus McVey). What was on the menu for guests to enjoy? We were very lucky to have the ladies from Mums on the Run catering, who did a superb job. We had a tray of antipasto platters to begin, six canapés to start, including Peking duck crepes, salt and pepper squid, mini beef wellingtons, satay chicken skewers, arancini balls, and coconut crumbed prawns. For mains we had alternate chicken topped with basil, sundried tomato, bocconcini and steamed greens with a kalamata sauce, or an eye fillet served on chive and garlic mash with peppercorn sauce. For dessert it was a dessert bar with my mother’s famous slices, Grandma’s biscuits, a Candi B cake and donuts. How far in advance did you start planning? Any hot tips for brides-to-be? I started a few weeks from the engagement. We actually originally wanted to get married in Mudgee, as it was equal distance between Port Macquarie (Ryan’s home town), West Wyalong (where I’m from) and Moree (where we resided). However, we made a weekend trip there and decided the prices just were not going to fit our budget, so we decided to go with Forster. Once we had set a date and confirmed the place, we started booking all the major things first - the photographer, venue and caterers. I also had to get on to local businesses that hire things early. Some of this proved difficult being away; however, White Palms were great to deal with and were happy even if you only wanted to hire a few bits and pieces. Sibella was I had an army of help, a dream to help put

us in contact with other businesses, as we were out of towners, as was the information centre in town - which have little wedding packs that proved useful. A major tip was researching hair and makeup artists in the area, as a lot of hairdressers in Forster don’t open on a Saturday. We were lucky Ryan’s brother lived in Smiths Lake, and we met Helen there. Did you find it easy to source everything you needed for your wedding locally? Read above, but it is very easy with most businesses being online, which helps - or in the know with their own contacts to help
guide you on to the right people. Again, the Information Centre that gave out the Forster packs was very helpful. What was your favourite part of your wedding day? There were a few! We had my nephew walk up the aisle, who only started walking two weeks prior, so we were a little worried he wouldn’t be able to perform on the day - but he definitely did his job to a tee. Another was just spending those intimate times during the photos, where you could relax as a couple and have fun with the wedding party. Another would have to be Ryan’s speech. He was really funny and heartfelt at the same time. Thanks Kathryn. Special Edition 47 Manning-Great Lakes focus 27

hen it comes to choosing a wedding photographer, there are a few really important points to consider. Below I’ve outlined our recommendations for dos and don’ts when it comes to choosing your wedding photographer - this isn’t necessarily specific to a wedding photographer; these tips should be spanned across your entire wedding. DO: First and foremost, choose a photographer who has your best interests at heart. Choose a photographer who wants you to have a fun and memorable day. Choose a photographer who is technically skilled, with backup equipment and a sound knowledge of how the day will run from start to finish. Choose a photographer who will cover the day based on the events of the day, not a time limit. Choose a photographer with a portfolio you absolutely love don’t settle for cheap, poor quality images. Ask friends and family for advice - ask what they thought was good and bad about their photographer, and take that into account when planning and booking. Ask your photographer if you can view more works than what are advertised on their website or Facebook page.
DON’T: Don’t choose a photographer based on price - you get what you pay for. Don’t necessarily take the first recommendation you receive find what you love and work with that photographer to ensure you get the best. Don’t ask friends and family to take your photos for you. Let them enjoy the day with you and leave the photos to a professional. 30 Special Manning-Great Lakes focus 50 Edition focus

he time limit for ordering a wedding cake: most DIY guides will tell you to order your wedding cake just two - three months in advance. Depending on your selected decorator, this is way too short notice. When you pick your venue, lock in your cake and caterer. * Copying other cakes - while pictures on Pinterest are lovely, a lot of these photos are of cakes made in the USA. The buttercream is different; the flowers are different. While we all give you a cake you absolutely love, cake decorating is an art, and plagiarism is real. Talk to your cake artist about creating something unique to you. * It’s a naked cake, so it must be way cheaper - a naked cake actually requires a lot of work. To make sure the crumbs don’t come off in the icing, refrigeration and a special baking technique is required, which is more time consuming. While not as time consuming as hand piping, sugar flowers, or edible lace, it is still a special skill to get it right. * She works from home, so she must be cheaper - WRONG. I still pay a special insurance for cake decorators, I buy quality ingredients, and I need to cover expenses. You are getting a quality cake for the right price. * Wedding cakes must be fruit: WRONG! Your wedding cake can be whatever flavour you like! I do recommend that if you’re having a two or three tier or more, that the bottom be mud to support the weight. I offer five different types of mud cake and 10 different fillings, so you can enjoy your wedding cake. * Your wedding cake should be white: Wrong! It’s 2019, people! Why not have a coloured wedding cake! You can have any decoration you like on your special day. It is about you and your partner. Why not choose something to represent your relationship? Not only are you not limited by design, why not have a rainbow inside? Now, that’s fun. * It’s cheaper to make the cake yourself: maybe. It may be cheaper, but it may not. Unless you are well equipped with tins, scrapers, ingredients, baking paper, levels, dowels, boards, icing and a box, then making your own cake can be a disaster. And no professional will be able to fit in a three tier cake two days before a wedding. Not to mention, who wants to be decorating and delivering a cake on their own wedding day?

ure, your style and your personal taste are very important when it comes to buying a suit, but to choose the right suit for your wedding you need to consider some factors, such as season, time, formal or informal, and the location of the ceremony. Ultimately, whatever you choose, regardless of colour or style, wear it with purpose and confidence - and remember that the best accessory a gentleman can have is a smile.

ou specialise in weddings and events; how did you get started? My partner and I were married at Wallamba Downs in September 2017. Following this, we did some research and launched our business with an Open Day last April. We were thrilled with over 100 people passing through the gates. You had your own wedding on the property; did this inspire you to start the business? Absolutely it did. We had not thought about a wedding and event business prior to our wedding. But after several guests encouraged us to share the stunning location and relaxed, rustic vibe, we decided to do some research. Wallamba Downs is located on an 168 acre property; tell us a bit about it? My parents own the property and have done for just over a decade. They are house proud and hardworking, putting all their spare time into maintaining the property and cottage gardens. It is pristine! Wallamba Downs is a working cattle farm situated 20 minutes inland from Forster/
Tuncurry on the NSW Mid North Coast. The property offers a combination of rolling paddocks with immaculate riverflats that flow into the Wallamba River. Tree covered hills surround the property, with Talawahl mountain appearing in the distance. The main farm house gardens complement the rustic surrounds. The PERFECT place for a wedding. You’re a relatively new business; what have been some of the challenges you’ve faced? Beginning any business has its challenges. From designing a website to gaining approval from local council - these are just two of the behind the scenes hurdles that needed to be completed before we could further promote the business and offer the location to the public. You’re a busy mum of two. How do you juggle work and family life? I have a wonderful support network. My husband and parents are second to none. I am infinitely grateful, as they have allowed me time to turn my passions into a reality. Most office work is completed during the early hours of the morning or evening when the girls are in bed. celebrant is not the run-ofthe-mill profession. Why did you choose this career path? I considered the idea of being a celebrant for years. Always the romantic and having a love of ceremony, I felt that being a celebrant would be a wonderful way to connect a couple and to tell their love story. It was a comment by my now daughter-in-law after my grandson’s baby naming 11 years ago; she suggested that I should become a celebrant. I began thinking more seriously about idea. I have an inherent interest in people and the power of the spoken word. As a humanist, I am passionate about ceremony and the impact ceremony has had on our lives throughout the ages. It takes a special person to be part of couples’ intimate moments. What personal qualities are essential to perform this vocation? Marriage Celebrants were first appointed in 1973, by the then Attorney General Lionel Murphy. When it came to the selection of Celebrants, “He looked for disciplined professionals who were aware of punctuality and who were efficient in record keeping and legal procedures. They were also to have sufficient poise and capacity in public speaking and delivery skills and needed to be conscious of people’s needs. They should be well presented at all times as befits the dignity of the profession”. It’s necessary to be genuine and authentic, warm, open and friendly, to actively listen to the couples, giving them a safe space to share their dreams and expectations and have the ability to guide them, to ensure the ceremony you create together allows their individuality

68 and stillYears going strong It’s quite an achievement to make 68 years! WE TALK TO BERYL AND BRUCE STEBER about what makes a long and happy marriage.
C
an you tell us how you first met? Beryl: We were both just kids when we first met during my family’s holidays at Narrabeen Beach. Bruce buddied up with my older brother John, and many hours were spent playing on the beach with the local kids. I was the tormenting and annoying little sister. Then came the war, and it was some years before my family spent much time again holidaying in Narrabeen (fuel was rationed, so travel was minimised and access to the beach was restricted) - Bruce had always lived in Narrabeen. After the war, now teenagers, for sport we played tennis and John introduced us to ballroom dancing, so we started going to dances. Bruce needed a partner, so the friendship blossomed. We were the first of the “kids on the beach” to marry. Was it love at first sight? Bruce: I was pretty certain Beryl was the “right one”. Looking back, I know she was. I’ve been very lucky to have her in my life. We’ve had a very happy and fulfilling life together. We are a team; we are buddies, as well as a married couple. When you said “I do,” did you imagine you’d still be married 68 years later? Do you think you fully comprehended what it meant? Beryl and Bruce: Sixty-eight years together was probably the last thing we were thinking about. Learning to trust each other, support each other and listening to each other, creating a home, becoming parents and raising a family, being partners in business and trying our best to make each other happy was more important than how many wedding anniversaries we would share. T
he setting, as Lucy explains, was also extra special … the couple couldn’t have travelled any further north, without Dan’s knees getting very wet! Hi Lucy. What part of the New England do you call home ... and how long have you lived there? I have lived in Armidale all of my life, apart from a four month stint in Longreach, Queensland, where I worked as a nanny. When and where did you and Dan first meet? I first met Dan about four years ago, when I joined some friends at a camp fire gettogether out of town. What were your first impressions? My first impression of Dan was that he seemed like a nice chap and that he had a lot of knowledge about four wheel driving, bikes and cars! What interests do you both have in common/what activities do you enjoy doing together? We both really enjoy camping and spending time together with our children in the outdoors. Dan taught me how to drive his manual 4WD vehicle, as we had plans to drive to Cape York many, many months before we headed off on our adventure - and

What wedding pans have you made already (if any)? We haven’t made any wedding plans yet, but we have talked about what we like and dislike in regards to weddings. We both agree that a simplistic wedding is what will suit us best. What are your biggest hopes/dreams for the future? Our plans for the future are to continue to enjoy each other’s company every minute of every day and to ensure that we build a truly wonderful, happy, loving and fun-filled life together for our beautiful children. Hopefully we will buy a house on a few acres in the future for our little family and continue to have many more adventures with our children. Thanks Lucy. Interview: Jo Robinson. The touching ceremony was performed by Belluca Civil Celebrant and the couple’s dear friend Jobi Strike in the quaint CWA Hall adjacent to the reception. The music began with the dreamy acoustic melodies of “Yhan Leal Music”, followed by the first dance to the effervescent “Matt, Dave and the Other Guy”, transitioning to the smooth and oh-so-funky sounds of “The Gravy”. Guests were treated to a live art installation by “Silly Pear”, who created an epic triptych from scratch for the day (and now for James and Shannans’ home). A good time had by all was captured by the incredible photography of Rachel Deane, who pulled out all the stops for every angle. The couple also has to give a shout out to Sam from Loose Lighting for all his hard work. Advice for those planning right now: Prioritise the things you love and question the status quo. James and Shannan love music and art, therefore their budget leant heavily towards those parts of the day. They were not so much into traditional formal meals or cakes; therefore, the food was casual and the dessert table was handmade by friends and family. Be true to yourself and your guests and most of all … have fun! To quote anyone ever married: “It all goes so quickly!”
