What can the NBN do for you? The NBN has the potential to transform many aspects t off our lives including home internet and telephone services in areas such as education, business, entertainment and access to online health services. Phone Once built, the NBN will also deliver your telephone service. The technology may be new, but using your phone will essentially be the same. Teleworking The NBN makes working from home easier by enabling you to access services like video-conferencing, and giving you the ability to upload large files from the comfort of your home office. By 2020 it is expected that at least 12 per cent of Australian employees will have a teleworking arrangement with their employers. Education Services delivered over the NBN have the potential to change the way we learn and teach. Imagine students linking in with a teacher hundreds of kilometres away via an online classroom, learning subjects never previously offered. For kids in a small remote classroom, a single parent studying from home, or a student with limited mobility, that's a brighter future.

eHealth One of the most exciting aspects of the NBN is the opportunity for advancements in internet-based medical technologies. Access to care through interactive internet consultations and “telemedicine” can help to bridge the medical gap between urban and regional Australians. In the future, regional patients could have the ability to consult with their specialist and local doctor, simultaneously, via video conference, greatly easing the burden of accessing the healthcare they need. Entertainment The NBN could be used by service providers to offer you a broad range of entertainment choices including: internet connected television streaming video-on-demand services, super fast online gaming and high quality video calling from your lounge room. Of course, you will also need the right software, equipment and in-premises connection to access these services. Business Solutions Once built, the NBN has the potential to change the way we do business by helping companies overcome the barriers of distance. Access to high speed broadband will provide many businesses with opportunities to save time and money, and compete in a much wider marketplace. The services provided over the NBN may open up opportunities for businesses to hold virtual meetings or liaise with suppliers across Australia online, saving time and costs associated with travelling.

Vision for Life at Port Macquarie Base Hospital

Plugging into Young Creativity

Port Macquarie is the latest regional centre to become part of an important development in the Vision for Life (VFL) Program, which is a jointly funded initiative by NSW Health and Variety - the Children’s Charity.

The peak regional body for arts and cultural development, Arts Mid North Coast, sees a big future for creative industries in the Region. According to AMNC executive officer Rod Howard, it is local young people who are already harnessing the power of the digital revolution and reaping its benefits. “With this in mind, our organisation has been investing in a region-wide youth digital arts program called Genwire Artspace. The program uses a project focused web portal to deliver skills development programs

and showcase young talent in areas such as photo-journalism, video documentary making and music,” Howard says. AMNC partners with schools, creative industry professionals and ABC Open to facilitate skills intensive workshops through the Genwire program. More information can be found at www.genwire.net.au

The program, launched in Port Macquarie recently, focuses on introducing videoconferencing technology to the consultation and retrieval process for sick and injured babies and children. Port Macquarie Base Hospital has received the potentially life-saving Telehealth system as part of the VFL program which links local hospital staff with specialists from the Sydney Children’s Hospitals’ Network and the Newborn and paediatric Emergency Transport Service (NETS).

The Digital Hub at the Coffs Coast Community College is providing group workshops and 1-on-1 sessions to show the Coffs Coast community how to get the most out of the NBN. The program of workshops and 1-on-1 sessions changes monthly (refer website for current program coffscoastdigitalhub. com and covers such diverse topics as “All about Facebook and Twitter”, “What you can do with your NBN”, “All about Emails”, “Your Health”, “Telling Your Story”, “Social Media” “Going Mobile with Tablets

and Smartphones”, “Gumtree and Ebay Shopping” and “Computers for the Totally Terrified”. The information sessions are suitable for the novice computer user but also demonstrate the potential of the NBN for more experienced operators. Call us on 66525378 for more information.

A number of local fund raising efforts contribute to the VFL Program, including the efforts of the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation which have been key to providing VFL to Port Macquarie Base Hospital and to other hospitals in the Region.

The future looks ‘appy’ for Aussie broadband connected homes

Feros Care My Health Clinic At Home Pilot for Coffs Harbour

You’ve heard of the Ice Age but have you heard of the ‘App Age’? A new report compiled by CSIRO’s Australian Centre for Broadband Innovation (ACBI) has revealed the next generation of broadband-enabled applications will be more about connecting households to new sensors and cloud services than checking emails and social media invites.

The aim of this Commonwealth funded pilot is to remotely monitor seniors’ chronic conditions and wellbeing from their own homes using Telehealth technology.

The ‘Broadband Connected Homes’ report describes the changing environment of Australian homes, the technologies that are affecting it, and its capacity to support new applications and services. “When considering over 3.5 million Australians now a use smart device to access the internet and app downloads are predicted to rise above 40 billion globally in 2013, it’s very clear our love affair with apps has come a long way in a few short years. We are now looking at the next era of development by experimenting with what our homes will look like when broadband-enabled apps connect data with multiple sensors and new business services,” said Colin Griffith, Director of CSIRO’s ACBI. “These apps will provide new ways for people to access health, energy, education, retail, security, entertainment and many more services. They will allow people to access, discover, share and contribute to media content personalised for us. Broadband apps will also allow us to do old things in new ways such as managing our home energy use through a centralised communications hub as well as enabling non-invasive monitoring and support systems which allow elderly people to live independently in their own homes,” he said.

The computer provided in their home will also link them with health professionals, community support, family and friends using video conferencing. The pilot will include • In-home monitoring of health vital signs and general wellness • Self-management education about their health condition • In-home video conferencing with health care staff, doctor, friends and family Potential participants to be 65 years old with a health condition • Computer, health equipment and professional advice provided free. • Personal health status is monitored daily from the home over the internet • It is FREE to participate during the term of the Pilot from Apr 2013 to end June 2014 Call 1300 851 771 at Feros Care to register interest or any related enquiries.

The Fibre network

High Speed Broadband – what can it do for you? NBN Co is delivering the leading edge broadband service to all Australians by leveraging the three types of technology available fibre, fixed wireless and satellite, depending on location. Fibre network As new devices and applications continue to rapidly drive bandwidth demand and usage growth, NBN Co is developing the future-proof solution that will enable access to superfast broadband regardless of where you live. Our network will also enable Australia to catch up with the rest of the world and prepare itself for future technological advances. More and more people are using the Internet as a part of their daily lives. The average per user monthly volume of traffic downloaded on a fixed broadband connection increased 21% to 9.2GB in the six months to June 2010*. This continues the long-term trend of circa 50% annual growth in internet traffic, a trend consistent with international online behaviour. *(According to the ABS' Internet Activity Study) The technology we utilised 5 years ago, that delivered speeds of around 256kbps, is no longer viable today. Consequently, we cannot assume that what we use today will be adequate in the next few years. We expect that fibre will allow for growth and development in the future.

Hear what others say

93% of Australian premises will be connected by fibre and will receive a high-speed broadband network that will provide superfast speeds. Fixed wireless Because of the size of our country, we will need to use fixed wireless and satellite technology to connect those premises that do not fall into the fibre footprint. We will utilise fixed wireless technology because we can develop a reliable service by building a network for a more predictable number of users in a given area. The antennas used are generally fixed and installed so that they are directed towards the fixed wireless base station. With mobile wireless the number of users in a cell can vary widely, and the strength of the signal change as you move closer or further away from base station. This technology will be available in specific areas as part of our suite of technologies to ensure we can provide high-speed broadband to all Australians. Satellite People in homes, small businesses and

Coffs Harbour Conservatorium Video Conferencing Music Education for Remote Schools using the NBN In 2012, the Coffs Harbour Regional Conservatorium piloted the delivery of music teaching into Bowraville Central School using video conferencing technology provided to us by the NSW Department of Education and Communities.

“Because of the remoteness of Bowraville Central School it isn’t feasible to bring all of their students to our Conservatorium to attend a drumming workshop, nor is it cost-effective to travel to Bowraville with all of the equipment necessary to deliver a workshop. The online solution provided by video conferencing means that we could showcase instruments those students wouldn’t otherwise have access to. Thanks to the NBN we will be able to better reach schools and students in remote areas.” says the conservatorium.
