Ahead of their upcoming show at C.ex Coffs Harbour on July 17, we caught up with Nick Wolfe to talk about the band’s latest album, life on the road, and why staying true to their Australian roots has never been more important.

i Nick. The Wolfe Brothers are heading back on the road after an 18-month break from touring, you’ve said that being on stage is where you feel most alive, what is it about performing live that keeps

or me, it s the final stage of the whole process. ou write the songs, go through the recording process, put so much into creating the album, and then e entually you get to play those songs li e for people who might ha e had the album for a while and made it part of their li es.

our reach, but we felt strongly about it. That s who we are and where we re from. e wanted to make a record about our li es, our communities and the places that mean something to us.

The response has been incredible. eople really connect with songs about ustralian e periences because they re authentic. e d rather sing about our real li es than try to write about places and e periences that aren t ours.

You and Tom have spent more than a decade building The Wolfe Brothers into one of Australia’s most successful country rock acts. Looking back, what moments stand out as major turning points in that journey?

You remained busy throughout 2025 playing festivals while also writing and recording new music. How do you balance life on the road with the creative process? t s definitely a balancing act. find need to get myself into a writing frame of mind and almost force myself to sit down and write, whether the songs end up being any good or not. nce you re in that creati e one, though, you start hearing things differently. eople say things e ery day that could be ama ing song lyrics if you re paying attention. t s about being open, noticing those moments and writing them down. e tend to collect ideas and let them sit for a while before de eloping them. also lo e co writing. e e built relationships with some great songwriters o er the years, and it s ama ing what can happen when you bring together different perspecti es and life e periences around one idea.

The Wolfe Brothers have built a reputation for high-energy live shows.

What can audiences in Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie expect when they see the Australian Made tour? ots of energy and lots of fun e know times are tough and the cost of li ing is affecting e eryone. hen people come to a show, we want it to be an escape. e want them to forget about the world for a couple of hours, let loose and ha e a great time. ne thing we e been doing on this tour that s been really en oyable is including a special segment where we play a deep cut from our catalogue. e e got se en albums now, so there are plenty of songs that we don t usually get to perform. e e been asking fans on social media which songs they d lo e to hear, and we e challenged oursel es not to repeat the same song throughout the entire tour. e re only a handful of shows in and we e already dusted

off songs we ha en t played for years. t s been a challenge remembering some of the lyrics, but it s also reminded us how much certain songs mean to people. t s really special to gi e those songs another run.

We’ve been asking fans on social media which songs they’d love to hear, and we’ve challenged ourselves not to repeat the same song throughout the entire tour. We’re only a handful of shows in and we’ve already dusted off songs we haven’t played for years.

Regional Australia has always embraced country music. What do you enjoy most about performing in communities like these along the Mid North Coast?

e lo e it. lot of tours these days focus on ma or cities, but country music belongs in regional ustralia. t s important to get out to those communities and play for people who don t always get access to big concerts and e ents. on t get me wrong, we lo e the big festi als and the big city shows, but we get ust as much en oyment playing in regional towns.

That s really what it s all about for us.

After so many years performing together, what continues to motivate you to push forward and create new music, and

what’s still on the horizon for The Wolfe Brothers do you think? t s funny because after se en albums you start wondering whether you e co ered e ery topic already.

arlier this year we did a writing trip and came away with a collection of songs that we re really e cited about. onestly, we think we e already got the foundations of the ne t album. ow it s about choosing the ery best songs and getting into the studio to record them. e e also got a new single coming out soon, which we re e cited about. t the end of the day, we ust lo e making music. e ha e an ama ing team around us, and life on the road feels like being with family. t s still pretty surreal that this is our ob, tra elling around the country with your mates, playing music you lo e and meeting great people along the way. s long as we can keep doing it, we will. absolutely lo e it.

W

hen Thelma Plum steps onto the stage at Bellingen Memorial Hall on August 5, it won’t just be another stop on a national tour. In many ways, it will feel a little like coming home.

The ARIA Award-winning Gamilaraay singersongwriter has a long and deeply personal connection to the Mid North Coast. While audiences across Australia know her for her powerful songwriting, soaring vocals and heartfelt storytelling, few may realise that some of her fondest childhood memories were formed right here.

"I really spent my whole childhood, all my school holidays, in Coffs," she told us during a previous interview ahead of her last regional tour.

"My great granny lived there and all my family are from Dorrigo, up on the mountain, so it's just so special to go back there."

Those family ties are one of the reasons she's particularly excited about returning to the region. Last year, when discussing her Mid North Coast shows, she laughed that audiences could expect "half of my family" to be in attendance.

"I'm super excited about those shows because a lot of my family are from Dorrigo and Coffs Harbour," she said. "I really mean it."

That sense of connection and familiarity makes ellingen a fitting stop for what may be her most intimate tour to date.

This July and August, Plum is travelling around Australia on her I Don't Play That Song nymore Tour, her first e er national acoustic tour. Stripping away the full-band production and returning to the format where her career began, she'll perform alongside friend and collaborator Toby in a duo setting that places the focus firmly on the songs themsel es.

"When I started out playing shows it was just me and a guitar, but it's been a long time since I've performed like that," she said.

"It's been a big year, I am working on a new record, and it feels like the perfect time to pack up the songbook and play some intimate shows with my friend Toby and let the songs and the stories behind them breathe."

It's a concept that feels perfectly suited to regional venues like Bellingen Memorial Hall.

Having performed everywhere from major festivals to sold-out theatre shows, Plum says there's something uniquely special about smaller regional audiences.

There is something powerful about watching an artist return to a place that helped shape them. Throughout our conversation, Plum spoke warmly of childhood holidays spent in Coffs Harbour, laughing as she recalled recently rediscovering old family photographs taken at the former Pet Porpoise Pool.

Those memories are part of what makes returning to the region feel so meaningful.

When she visited last year, she deliberately scheduled time after the shows to spend with family and reconnect with the places she loves.

"I've made sure that after the shows I've got a couple of days off because I was like, 'I'm coming home, baby!'"

That sentiment feels especially fitting for this tour. t a time when Thelma lum is re ecting on her journey, revisiting old songs and reconnecting with audiences in a more personal way, a stop in Bellingen seems less like a concert booking and more like a homecoming.

For fans, it promises an evening of stories, laughter, memories and extraordinary music from one of Australia's most beloved artists.

For Plum, it may simply be another chance to share songs with the community that has always felt a little like family.

Local nurse, breast cancer survivor, and proud member of Dragons Abreast Coffs Coast, Lizzie Moloney is now preparing to represent the region on the world stage at the International Breast Cancer Paddlers’ Commission Dragon Boat Festival in France this August. We spoke with Lizzie about her cancer journey, the support she found through paddling, and what it means to stand alongside thousands of survivors from around the globe.

i Lizzie. You’re preparing to travel to France this August for the International Breast Cancer Paddlers’ Commission Dragon Boat Festival, what does the festival represent and what does it mean to you persona to e part o suc a si ni cant global event?

The International Breast Cancer Paddlers’ Commission Dragon Boat Festival occurs every 4 years and brings together survivors and their support crew from all over the world. There is a total of 4500 participants from 25 countries.

It highlights the bond that survivors have with each other no matter race or creed, through the exercise of dragon boating. It’s also an opportunity to live out the values of Dragons Abreast Australia (DAA) – Connect, Move, Live AND an opportunity to make new friends from all over the world. It’s an exciting adventure that I cannot wait to be a part of.

As a breast cancer survivor, can you share

a little about your journey and how it led you to Dragons Abreast Coffs Coast?

What has paddling given you in your own recovery and life beyond diagnosis?

I was diagnosed in 2022 following a routine mammogram. It hit me like a bolt out of the blue. I was totally not expecting cancer. A gamut of emotions rolled around my head. I was lucky I had a great support crew. One of my very best friends was diagnosed at the age of 39. She found dragon boating and went on to become one of the directors of Dragons Abreast Australia (DAA). I was introduced to dragon boating way before my own diagnosis but have now found a great love for the sport. I joined Dragons Abreast Coffs Coast not long after finishing my treatment.

The camaraderie, friendship and support we all give to each other is second to none. We paddle once a month on the beautiful Kalang River, a boat full of survivors and supporters.

We don’t tend to talk about our journey, we just know. It gives a real sense of belonging.

Physically empowering and emotional healing is spot on. Apart from the monthly paddle with DACC, I also paddle at least once a week with Kalang River Dragon Boat club.

It’s a fantastic workout with a great crew of paddlers. Working as a team and being one with the boat has increased my fitness immensely. Paddling our beautiful Kalang River, you get to see lots of wildlife. We have been followed by dolphins, amazing sea birds and turtles. How can that not instill peace and calm? Combining that with events that DAA hold, it gives you a sense that you are part of an amazing community of strong women and men. It’s very humbling, and the fun we have on DAA events is amazing. Highly recommended.

Many people describe dragon boating as something that is both physically empowering and emotionally healing.

You work as a nurse, caring for others in their most vulnerable moments. How has your own experience as a patient shaped the way you approach your work?

Being on the “other side” was a scary

experience. Even though I knew what would happen and had absolute faith and trust in my colleagues it still freaked me out. Going through a cancer journey, especially in the early stages, there are so many unanswered questions and your mind plays lots of tricks as well. I am sure this also resonates with many others fighting this horrible condition.

I have always been very empathetic towards my patients but I am more so now. I have been there through the anxiety so I can relate wholeheartedly to how they are feeling, especially those battling breast cancer. I try to spend some time with them to let them know they are safe, have the best medical professionals taking care of them and that there is so much support out there for them.

What does it mean to you personally to be representing Coffs Harbour at an international event?

This trip to France is not just a sporting event, but a major international gathering of survivors. What are you most looking forward to experiencing while you’re there?

It’s a great honour to be the only member from Coffs Harbour representing our beautiful coast in the Parade of Nations. I will be wearing my Dragons Abreast Coffs Coast shirt proudly. I have never been involved in an international event and I am so looking forward to it.

As the owner of Glenreagh Bakery, Brooke has combined international experience, a passion for quality craftsmanship and a love of country community to create a bakery that draws locals and visitors alike. We spoke with Brooke about her remarkable career journey, and the secret ingredients behind the bakery’s growing success.

i Brooke. Glenreagh Bakery has quickly become a favourite destination in the rara a e . at rst inspired you to make the move from city life to Glenreagh and open the bakery?

A family member who regularly visited the bakery told me it was for sale, so I thought I would check it out. We were also at the point where, as a family, we needed to move out of our small Sydney apartment.

I grew up in a small country town, so even though I spent many years working in big cities and internationally, I always loved the sense of community you only really find in regional areas. After years in busy kitchens, Glenreagh felt like an opportunity to build something meaningful with a strong focus on quality, people and handmade food.

What drew us in was the charm of the village and the potential to create a destination bakery in a place people might not expect. We

loved the idea of bringing high-level baking and pastry techniques into a relaxed country setting where people could stop for a pie, a loaf of sourdough or something sweet, and genuinely feel welcome.

You’ve had an incredible career journey, from a small French bakery apprenticeship to working at iconic venues like Claridge’s and The Ritz in London, looking back, what are some of the moments that stand out most?

Starting out in a small French bakery gave me such a strong foundation and introduced me to the food industry.

It wasn’t until I met my TAFE teacher, now a long-term friend, who saw something else in me and encouraged me to enter pastry competitions. Those experiences taught me discipline, respect for traditional techniques and the importance of consistency - lessons that still shape how I work today.

Working at places like Claridge’s and The Ritz was incredibly special because you’re surrounded by people operating at such a high

standard every day. There’s a level of precision and attention to detail in those kitchens that really stays with you.

My favourite memories though, are the people you meet. You work such long hours that you become incredibly close with your team; passionate chefs, bakers and hospitality staff from all over the world, constantly learning from each other.

Winning Bake Skills Australia at 20 was definitely a turning point. t ga e me confidence that really could build a career at that level and opened doors internationally that I never imagined possible growing up.

Winning Bake Skills Australia at just 20 was a huge achievement, how did that success s ape our con ence an open doors internationally? inning the competition ga e me confidence to back myself and pursue opportunities overseas that felt quite intimidating at the time. It opened doors internationally and gave me exposure to chefs and kitchens I may never have otherwise experienced. It also taught me

that hard work and consistency really matter in this industry. Sometimes you just have to put yourself out there and go for it.

Your work has taken you everywhere from London to some of Sydney’s top kitchens. How have those global experiences influence at ou create today at Glenreagh Bakery?

Every place I worked taught me something different. London taught me precision and high standards.

Working with the best of the best meant you had to constantly improve and push yourself.

itself, there’s something really satisfying about working with your hands and creating quality food from simple ingredients every day.

How important has local community support been in helping Glenreagh Bakery grow?

The community support has meant everything.

Small towns really rally behind local businesses, and we’ve felt incredibly supported from day one. The bakery has become more than just somewhere to buy bread or coffee, it’s become a meeting place and part of the community, which is really special to us.

At 6am every morning, the bakery becomes a little social hub. Everyone grabs a coffee and something to eat on their way to work, and there’s always plenty of banter while people wait. ina en peop e ea e enrea a er a ter t eir isit at experience do you hope they take with them?

I hope people leave feeling like they discovered something genuine. We’re very proud of the quality of the food, but just as importantly we want people to feel welcomed and connected to the town.

Glenreagh is such a beautiful little part of the world, and if people leave with good food, a good coffee and a nice memory of the experience, then we’ve done our job well.

For more than three decades, Linda Dalton has been helping people navigate some of life’s most significant moments. As both a respected solicitor and civil celebrant, she has guided local families through weddings, farewells, family transitions and new beginnings, building lasting connections throughout the Bellingen community along the way.

H

i Linda. You’ve been part of the Bellingen community for many years, supporting people through some of life’s biggest milestones, what do you love most about the work you do?

My friends joke that I’m a ‘cradle to grave’ service. As a celebrant, I get the absolute joy of weddings. They’re always about collaboration, about really getting to know what life and love mean to the couple and together crafting a way to share that with the world.

As I’ve grown older and lost people who’ve meant a lot to me, I’ve also come to appreciate the importance of funerals. Finding ways to elevate the rituals around death from a standard service to something unique to the person who died, and to those who loved them, is really gratifying work and getting it right makes a real difference to how people feel moving forward.

My legal work often involves meeting people at their lowest ebb. When they’re dealing with an estate or working through a separation, 28 COFFS COAST focus

people are coming to me at a vulnerable time and helping them chart a course through that is very rewarding.

I am acutely conscious that in all three areas, people are sharing some of their most significant and tender moments and relying on me to navigate their way. I deeply appreciate their trust.

You’re both a civil celebrant and a solicitor with 35 years experience, how do you think those two roles complement and inform each other?

I know it doesn’t sound very romantic but marriage is a legal institution and there are laws and rules to be complied with to make it valid. Most times that’s a straightforward process and sometimes it isn’t. At least 3 times over the years, the groom has discovered he’s not actually divorced and I’ve had to make urgent applications to the court to ensure that the marriage could proceed.

One of the most moving weddings I’ve conducted was at Bellingen Hospital for a man whose dying wish was to marry the woman he’d lived with for the past 40+ years. She’d

been divorced before 1975 when the Family Court took over such matters and pulling that together was a race against the clock involving the Prothonotary of the Supreme Court, the State Archives, the Local Court Registrar and the Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages. I used all my professional skills and called on connections I’d made over decades - without being a solicitor, I don’t think we would have got there. To be part of something like that never leaves you. It may not have been the most eloquent or sumptuous ceremony I’ve been part of but thinking about it still brings tears to my eyes.

When I meet with a family to prepare for a funeral, they often feel overwhelmed with how much they don’t know about what the future will hold. I think they appreciate that I can provide an overview of what the next few months will look like so that they can set that to one side and focus on the ceremony they want.

You’ve said that ceremonies are a chance to “look up from our busy lives and think about what really matters.” Why do you

think those pauses are so important in today’s world?

Do you know the story about the sand and the stones? If you put the big stones in a jar and pour sand in afterwards, the sand will fill all the gaps around the stones. f you fill the ar with sand first you won t be able to fit the stones in. The stones are all the big things in our li es health, family, friends, fulfilling dreams, fighting for what you belie e in .the sand, of course, is all the day to day stuff that so often leaves us exhausted at the end of the day e en though we can t actually remember what we did or why.

Ceremonies force us to think about the big things in our lives, we have to set aside time for them and we have to think about them. I think that s a good thing.

Have you noticed any changes in how people approach weddings, farewells, and life celebrations over the years you’ve been working in this space?

Yes! We all owe Lionel Murphy, the Attorney General in the Whitlam Government, a great debt. Thanks to him we have the civil celebrancy and as a result, couples have the autonomy to create ceremonies that re ect their values, ideas and sense of beauty. Part of the thrill for me is trying new things. I encourage people to draw inspiration from books, films, con ersations they e had,

What keeps you personally motivated to continue doing this work?

I feel incredibly fortunate to have work that enables me to earn a living doing things that find so fulfilling and allows me to forge enduring relationships with people throughout the local community.

I love Bello. In the mid 80s it took 10 hours to drive from Sydney and I still remember waking

at the post office that strangers put books in the street library we e set up at the office the working bees; the RFS; the community projects; the cake making for fund raisers; that people are valued more for what they contribute to the town than the work they do; and the numerous small kindnesses that happen every day in a small community. An unexpected delight of the celebrancy work has been that many of the couples e met and got to know, have stayed in touch and even brought their babies to meet me. t doesn t get much better than that!

For Trudy Kristensen, co-owner of CrossFit Woolgoolga, a dream has become reality as she’s earned her place at the 2026 CrossFit Games in San Jose, California, where she will compete against the world’s best athletes. We spoke with Trudy about her inspiring journey to reach the pinnacle of her sport, and the incredible community that has supported her every step of the way.

i Trudy. Congratulations on qualifying for the 2026 CrossFit Games in San Jose, California - the pinnacle of CrossFit competition worldwide. What was your reaction when you realised you’d secured your place on the world stage?

I was absolutely over the moon - it’s been a long process to get to this stage. It was a 4 part process that we started back in February and this was the 4th quailfying competition and the final step to get to the games. It’s been a long, exciting and hard start of the year but I’m super happy.

Not only for myself but for our community and CrossFit Woolgoolga, it’s totally been a team effort!

For those unfamiliar with the sport, can ou exp ain ust o si ni cant it is to qualify for the CrossFit Games and what it means to compete alongside the world’s best athletes?

CrossFit is such a huge and very competitive sport. The first step to qualify for the games is when over 250,000 athletes compete in the CrossFit open, then the top 25% go into the next stage which is the quarterfinals, then the top 300 in the world compete online and finally an in-person competition, where the top three athletes from Oceana make it through to the CrossFit Games.

Every elite athlete has a journey. Looking back, what have been some of the e nin moments t at e ou to t is achievement?

Being a mum and a wife led me to this achievement. Back in 2014 I gave birth to our beautiful baby girl however I unfortunately suffered postnatal depression. At the time I was living in Denmark and the only way I managed was with medication. After being medicated for a year I started to get side effects and I decided I needed to get healthy.

We moved back to Australia where I was surrounded by family and I started to do CrossFit with my husband, Lars. My husband is an exceptional athlete and I had the privilege of watching him compete at the 2023 CrossFit Games. I secretly wanted to do the same, so I went back home and I trained alongside my husband.

I ate, I recovered, and I repeated, and now I’m grateful and delighted to be following in my husband’s footprints.

Qualifying for the Games requires an extraordinary level of commitment, what does a typical training week look like for you?

It really is a juggling act! My husband and I own CrossFit Woolgoolga, we have two kids, are proud homeschooling parents and

we are both very dedicated athletes. Life gets very busy so we don’t have time for five hours of training a day, but when we are in the gym we give 100%. We train six days a week and on three of those days we do a double session. The rest of our time is balanced between business and home life.

That really is the hard part about this sport, you don’t know what’s going to be thrown at you. We train all modalities of fitness in preparation for anything!

Training consists of weight lifting, gymnastics, running, rowing, skiing, all sorts of agility, plyometrics and swimming really every aspect of fitness will be tested.

As co-owner of Woolgoolga CrossFit, I guess that’s what I love about the sport, you’re balancing your own athletic that you’ve always got your strengths ambitions as well as running the business but then you’re always humbled by your and supporting members, how do you weaknesses. My strengths are definitely juggle it all? gymnastics and engine work. Right now I have an amazing team behind me! My in preparation, I’m trying to work on parents, husband and kids are really the my weaknesses which are strongmen best and so supportive of my goals and movements and strength in general, just dreams. The team of trying to go into each coaches at Crossfit session with a positive Woolgoolga are mindset and enjoy the incredible and all Our in-house journey. the members are just great human beings.

The Mid North Coast has a strong and supporti e tness community, how important has that local support been in helping you reach this level?

The CrossFit Games are known for throwing athletes into the unknown with a huge variety of physical and mental challenges. What aspects of the competition are you most looking forward to and how are you preparing?

As someone who coaches and inspires others every day, what message do you hope your achievement sends to aspiring athletes in our region?

You’re never too old to have goals and dreams.

It doesn’t have to be the CrossFit Games or World Championships or a competition, just get out there, move, feel good and have big, crazy, scary dreams! Don’t be afraid to get uncomfortable and/or fail.

Winter is one of my favourite times of year on the Coffs Coast. The days are mild, the crowds are smaller, and it’s the perfect season to slow down, get outside and explore a little closer to home.

his year, it matters more than ever. It's no secret that times are a bit tough – for households, and for the small businesses that give our region its character.

Talented Year 12 student Billy Watkins recently found herself in the national spotlight after receiving an Honourable Mention in the prestigious Young Archie 2026 competition. With her striking portrait of her grandmother Rosemary, now hanging in Sydney’s SH Ervin Gallery, Billy is earning recognition for her remarkable skill in hyperrealistic pencil portraiture.

Your portrait was originally created as part of a Year 11 Visual Arts assessment task, what inspired the artwork and the person you chose to portray?

Thank you! I chose to draw my Nanna, Rosemary. She helped raise me and we have 42 COFFS COAST focus

a strong bond and she has always been a solid and constant presence in my life. I en oyed capturing the fine detail of her face using pencil and shading, showing every line and spot, which marks her agestrength and wisdom.

With more than 4,300 entries submitted and only a small number recognised, what does this achievement mean to you personally?

I was really surprised that this happened to

me. It feels good hearing that people noticed my art, and that they think I’m talented. My family has been really excited and supportive about it all too. It was their idea to enter me into the Young Archie competition, but I didn’t think I’d hear back about it. When I did it felt really unexpected. Lots of people have commented on how they like my art, even people I don’t know!

Can you tell us about the creative process behind the drawing, from the initial

I use a range of lead pencils, and I experiment with using different pressure and leads to get the effects I want.

I concentrate on the fine lines and marks on the subject, and look I concentrate at how the light and on the fine shadows hit what I’m lines and marks on drawing. I decided to do art as a major in Year 11, and I talked to my teacher about what medium and subjects would suit my style. I always liked noticing detail, and pencils are the best for me to do this kind of work.

Once I decided my theme and what I wanted to draw, I take a series of initial photos of each subject, and then print which one I want to capture.

First I sketch a rough outline using a light box, to capture the general dimensions of each face I’m drawing. Then I just sit with the photo and try to capture it, which takes many hours to do. I start on the main features like eyes, nose and mouth. Then for the skin I use

I realised I could do this style of drawing, so I just started doing it to see where it could take me. I like seeing how close to the photo I can get my drawings to be. I like to capture people’s emotions through the details on their face and their expressions.

Seeing your artwork displayed at the SH Ervin Gallery, one of Sydney’s leading public art institutions, must be incredibly special. What do you hope people feel or take away when they view your portrait?

We’re going as a family to Sydney soon, to visit the gallery where my art is hanging.

Nanna is coming too so we can see her portrait together, up and framed. I hope she I don’t really enjoys that - I don’t think about know what I’ll feel like my future as an when I see it! artist. I’m focusing I hope people like my work, which is about the beauty of aging and the process of time. I’d like it if people can get a sense of her eyes being a window into her soul.

It’s been really nice to know people think my artwork is good.

Are there other themes, subjects or mediums you enjoy exploring in your artwork?

I’ve been looking at the aging process, and themes comparing young and old. I like the contrast between old and young skin.

I’ve branched out from portraiture into drawing all the different spectrum of ages, as well as drawing hands too.

I’ve tried using paint to do portraits, but I really prefer lead pencils so much more.

Has receiving recognition through the Young Archie competition changed the way you think about your future as an artist?

through Year 12 right now. It’s been really nice to know people think my artwork is good. It’s made me feel more confident in my abilities and skills, and that I can try new things.

Looking ahead, what are your goals after Year 12, and where would you like your artistic journey to take you next?

I’m really not sure what will happen next, or if I’ll be an artist when I’m older. I want to keep trying to do art as a hobby, and develop my skills more as I go. I want to go to Uni and travel. I guess I’ll just see what happens, and where it all takes me!

he Coffs Coast is one of regional NSW’s great success stories. t is a region defined by strong population growth, a thriving visitor economy and a business community that continues to demonstrate resilience and ambition.

But growth does not happen by chance.

It depends on infrastructure, the essential systems that enable businesses to invest, communities to thrive, and economies to perform.

housing, businesses cannot attract or retain workers, and workforce shortages begin to limit growth.

At the same time, we must broaden how we think about housing supply. Mediumdensity housing, such as townhouses, dual occupancies and low-rise developments, will be essential to improving affordability and supporting a diverse workforce. Current regulatory settings often make these developments unviable in regional markets, and that needs to change.

However, housing is only part of the picture.

Right now, business across the Mid North Coast is facing a clear constraint: infrastructure is not keeping pace with demand.

Regional connectivity, particularly through aviation, is equally critical to the long-term competitiveness of the Coffs Coast.

Housing is the most immediate pressure point.

At our recent Mid North Coast Housing Now! Summit held in Coffs Harbour, there was strong alignment across councils, industry and community leaders that enabling infrastructure is the single biggest barrier to delivering new homes. Without investment in water, sewer, transport and utilities, even approved developments cannot proceed.

Coffs Harbour Airport is a key economic asset, connecting the region to major domestic markets and supporting tourism, business travel and freight. It currently services around 260,000 passengers annually and has already demonstrated how targeted investment can unlock growth through its recent terminal and airfield upgrades.

For the Coffs Coast, this means critical pro ects, such as infill water and sewer upgrades, and enabling infrastructure to support growth areas like the Jetty Foreshore, must be prioritised. These are not just planning issues; they are economic issues. Without 46 COFFS COAST focus

More broadly, regional airports across NSW support approximately 3.5 million passenger movements each year and play a vital role in connecting businesses to customers, supply chains and services.

Yet this system is under strain. Ageing infrastructure, limited airline competition

and constrained access to Sydney slots are increasing costs and reducing reliability for regional businesses. When connectivity is disrupted, the impact is immediate - higher travel costs, longer travel times and lost economic opportunity.

For a region like the Coffs Coast, which relies heavily on tourism and service-based industries, this is a critical issue.

The solution requires coordinated, long-term investment. Business NSW has called for a dedicated Regional Aviation Infrastructure Fund, alongside reforms to improve service reliability, affordability and access to key routes.

There is also a significant opportunity on the horizon. The opening of Western Sydney International Airport presents a chance to improve regional access to domestic and global markets, but only if regional connectivity is built into its operating model from day one.

What is clear is this: infrastructure is not just about physical assets, it is about enabling opportunity.

For the Coffs Coast to reach its full potential, we must align housing, transport and connectivity investment with the needs of business and the realities of regional growth.

The region is ready. The question now is whether infrastructure will keep up.

i Sharon. You founded the original Fresh Dental Care practice in Urunga in 2004, now known as Welcome Dental, can you tell us a bit about your journey?

The first practice was a bit of an e periment. had ery little e perience in business apart from running a small dental locum agency. urprisingly it put me in good stead for running a dental surgery and one of my biggest regrets is that didn t continue with it for long after opening the first surgery.

The first surgery was in the tiniest room in runga. didn t know much at all so when saw that a near new practice in Tasmania was selling all its equipment and stock, had it shipped up. The dentist ew up to help us set up. There was so much luck in ol ed. o many people came together and helped in so many ways and m really grateful for that. e opened ecember . ate a dentist d pre iously worked with contacted saying she wanted to sell her practice. t ust happened from there. a ing more rooms meant that there was capacity for working with other dentists and hygienists which is so much more fun because you all get 48 COFFS COAST focus

We are most privileged and excited to have Dr Russell Ho join us after closing his practice of 36 years in the centre of Coffs.

Welcome Dental has built a reputation for providing warm, patient-focused gentle care. Many people experience anxiety about visiting the dentist, how do you help nervous or phobic patients feel comfortable and supported?

Coming to the dentist is a bit intimidating for some so we wanted our environments to be warm and welcoming, not cold and clinical. We try to make sure people know they are heard and well looked after.

In a nutshell we tailor our approach to the needs of the individual. To do this you need to ask where the anxiety came from. Nearly e eryone can point to a specific e perience and it may not be dental. Then you need to ask

what their triggers are and what will help.

There are a multitude of things you can do and avoid doing from here. Then you need to write it down so you don’t need to ask and bring it all up for them again.

Children should come in as young as possible. ometimes the first few times we can’t even look in their mouth and that s fine. arents and caregi ers can be educated and it’s important that the kids keep coming to the same place where they can feel safe. f we can build their confidence so they can at least have their teeth polished then in the event of emergency, we’re much more likely to be able to help them. Our aim is to minimise the work required because nothing is as good as a healthy tooth and baby teeth are important.

Of course we also have the happy gas for those who need it. t s especially good for people with gagging problems.

As a business owner, what have been some of the biggest lessons you've learned along the way?

Toughen up; surround yourself with people better and smarter than you; treat people well

and make sure they know it. Be too busy to be afraid. Trust your instincts but test them and don’t be greedy.

Looking ahead, what excites you most about the future of Welcome Dental and continuing to care for the local community?

We’re super excited that in less than 12 months after opening the second surgery we have had all 8 chairs working across both locations.

Starting a new site from scratch we didn’t think that would be possible just yet. We hope to be working to capacity within six months. For this we have to thank our wonderful staff and our fantastic patients. Many of whom have been with me since 2004 and because nice people refer nice people it’s a pleasure to come to work. Most of our new patients come on recommendation from another.

We’re starting our tooth fairy program again soon this year. Every year we’ve sent our tooth fairy out to give oral health education to kids at schools and preschools. Last year she visited about 45 which equated to about 1500 kids and a lot of toothbrushes! My eldest daughter’s godfather once told me he ne er knew he had to brush his teeth or had a toothbrush until someone visited his school when he was eight years old. I’m glad we can reach some of those kids.

or those who may not have seen one of your shows before, tell us a little about yourself and what audiences can expect when they walk through the doors of the Jetty

Theatre?

I’m Krystal Brown, a comedy hypnotist, and my favourite thing is giving people a night where they can switch off, laugh hard and just have fun. My show is a 90-minute comedy hypnosis experience where the audience becomes the star of the show. It’s fast, funny, surprising and family-friendly. You can bring your 9-year-old, your teenager, your mum or your nanna, everyone can enjoy it. When people walk into the Jetty Theatre, they can expect a proper night out with big laughs, great energy and those “did that really just happen?” moments.

Hypnosis has fascinated people for eca es. at rst spar e our interest in the art of hypnosis, and how did you turn it into a career?

I’ve always been fascinated by the mind and how powerful it really is. Hypnosis

grabbed me because it shows how much we are capable of when we relax, let go and allow ourselves to have an experience. For me, it started with curiosity, then training, then performing, and I realised this was exactly where I was meant to be. I love entertainment, I love people, and I love creating moments where the whole room is laughing together. Turning it into a career has been a passion, hard work, lots of shows and learning how to really connect with an audience.

There are still plenty of misconceptions about hypnosis. What's the biggest myth you hear, and what would you like people to understand about the experience?

The biggest myth is definitely, re you going to make me cluck like a chicken?” I hear that one all the time.

The truth is, I can’t make anyone do anything they don’t want to do. Hypnosis isn’t mind control, you are not asleep, unconscious or powerless. It’s more like a focused, relaxed state where your imagination is switched on and you allow yourself to have fun with it.

The people who come up on stage still know who they are and they still have choice. They are just more relaxed, more playful and more open to the experience, that’s what makes it funny. It’s not about making anyone look silly in a nasty way, it’s about creating a safe space where people can let go, have a laugh and surprise themselves.

Your live shows are known for being both entertaining and interactive. What makes a stage hypnosis show such a unique form of live entertainment?

No two shows are ever the same, and that’s what makes it so exciting. With a comedy hypnosis show, the funniest moments come from real people in the audience. It’s not scripted like a normal performance. I guide the show, but the volunteers bring their own personalities, reactions and surprises.

That’s the magic of it. The audience isn’t just

watching a show, they’re part of it. Their friends, family, workmates or locals could end up on stage becoming the highlight of the night.

You've performed for audiences across Australia. What do you love most about bringing your show to regional communities like the Coffs Coast?

Without giving too much away, are there any highlights or audience-favourite moments we can look forward to in the July performance?

Regional communities are my favourite, and Coffs is extra special because this is home for us now. e ha e tra elled all o er ustralia, performed in so many places, and when we found the Coffs Coast we fell in love with it.

There are definitely a few crowd fa ourites, but I don’t want to give too much away There is something about this area, the because the surprise is half the fun. What people, the beaches, the community feel, I can say is people can expect big laughs, it really does feel like home. upporting children’s mental health is a critical aspect of fostering their overall wellbeing and development.

It begins with creating safe and nurturing environments where children feel secure and valued.

Establishing safety, both physically and emotionally, is the foundation for trust and engagement. When children feel safe, they are more likely to express themselves, explore their emotions, and build meaningful connections with others.

Understanding children’s behaviour is another essential component of supporting their mental health. Behaviour often serves as a form of communication, particularly for younger children who may not yet have the words to express their feelings. or busy schedules. I also offer appointments from my home-based clinic for those who prefer a dedicated treatment environment.

What are some of the most common issues you help clients manage? I regularly assist clients with lower back pain, sciatica, neck and shoulder tension, headaches, migraines, sports injuries and postural issues. Massage therapy can help reduce pain, improve mobility, support recovery and enhance overall wellbeing.

What sets Whole Body Health & Healing apart from other massage providers in the region? I focus on identifying and treating the underlying causes of pain, not just the symptoms. s a qualified remedial massage therapist, personal trainer and sports trainer, I take a broader approach to injury management.

ow do your skills support patients with musculoskeletal (MSK) injuries such as hip, knee, ankle, shoulder, elbow or wrist conditions? Following my specialist training in New Zealand, I completed further fellowship training in musculoskeletal MRI under world-renowned radiologist Dr Stephen Pomeranz in the United States. This advanced training allowed me to bring internationally recognised expertise back to the Coffs Harbour community, and to establish I-MED, Coffs Harbour’s first radiofrequency ablation clinic for local patients experiencing chronic pain.

What do you want local patients to know about radiology in Coffs Harbour? Our team includes radiologists who are also 62 COFFS COAST focus

part of the Base Hospital service in Coffs Harbour, which creates a strong connection with both the community and referring clinicians.

Together, we actively participate in multidisciplinary care across a range of specialties to ensure each patient receives the most appropriate management plan.

In addition to my MSK Fellowship, I have also undertaken an Abdominal Imaging Fellowship in Canada at the University of Ottawa with a strong liver and oncology focus which enables me to provide a valuable contribution to our local oncology services.

We are also involved in teaching and ongoing education across the region. Collectively, we cover all major subspecialties in radiology, and I also serve as an External Clinical Advisor for the Healthcare Complaints Commission.

How do your skills support patients in the local community?

My skill set is slightly different to the other radiologists locally.

I specialised as an Interventional Radiologist; which essentially means that spend most of my time doing procedures that require CT, ultrasound or angiograms to guide my surgical approach. I divide this work between the hospitals and I-Med. A large portion of this work involves helping people with their journeys through cancer, from biopsies through to palliative procedures when necessary.

What do you want local patients to know about radiology in Coffs Harbour? As a team, we have been providing radiology services to the local community now for many years, and as radiologists consider ourselves locals. Our team of radiographers, nurses and clerical staff, are also part of the local community, many of whom have been here their whole lives.

hat inspired you to start Skin Bliss?

Skin Bliss recently celebrated 16 years in business. With a background in science, naturopathy and bodywork, I recognised an opportunity to offer something different, an approach that connects skin health with overall wellbeing.

I wanted to create a space where advanced skin treatments, healing touch and a holistic philosophy worked together to deliver both results and wellness.

What skin concerns do you treat most often?

We commonly work with mature skin, rosacea, acne, sensitivity and impaired skin barrier function. Many clients come to us feeling o erwhelmed by con icting ad ice and products that haven't delivered results.

Our focus is on simplifying skincare and creating personalised treatment plans that

support long-term skin health. We also consider factors such as stress, nervous system regulation and gut health, as these can ha e a significant impact on the skin.

What treatments are your clients loving right now?

Our Bello Bliss Out treatment continues to be a client favourite, combining a holistic facial with therapeutic bodywork to promote deep relaxation and healing. Customised facials, buccal massage and skin revision programs are also extremely popular, as clients are increasingly looking for treatments that deliver visible results while supporting overall wellbeing. During winter, many clients progress to advanced treatments such as skin needling.

Toormina High School L AUNCHES BIG PIC TURE

Learning Program

Toormina High School will launch the internationally recognised Big Picture Learning program in Term 4, 2026, providing students with a highly personalised approach to education that connects learning with individual interests, strengths and future aspirations.

C

ommunity interest in the program has exceeded expectations, with 31 students applying for just 17 places in the inaugural Year 9 cohort. The strong response re ects growing demand for alternative learning pathways that engage students through real-world experiences and meaningful relationships.

Big Picture Learning is built on the philosophy of “one student at a time in a community of learners”. Students work within small advisory groups and develop personalised learning plans based on their passions and goals. Learning extends beyond the classroom through community partnerships, mentorships, internships and

authentic projects that connect education to life beyond school.

The program aims to develop independent, motivated learners equipped with the communication, problem-solving and employability skills needed for future success. Students regularly present exhibitions of their learning to families, staff and community members, creating a culture of accountability, re ection and achievement.

To support the implementation of the program, several Toormina High School staff members have completed specialist Big Picture Learning training, with further professional learning continuing throughout 2026. A dedicated Big Picture learning space has also been established, featuring

contemporary furniture and e ible learning areas designed to foster collaboration, creativity and independent learning.

The launch of the program is part of a carefully planned staged implementation.

The inaugural Year 9 cohort will progress into Year 10 in 2027, while a Year 8 cohort will commence in 2028. By 2029, Big Picture will operate across Years 8 to 12, providing students with a continuous pathway through their secondary education.

The introduction of Big Picture represents a significant in estment in inno ati e learning at Toormina High School and further strengthens the school’s commitment to ensuring every student has access to an educational pathway that is engaging, relevant and designed to help them thrive.

Toormina High School’s Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) Showcase Evening was a tremendous success, drawing a full audience of parents, carers and community members who gathered to celebrate the creativity and talent of our students.

he evening featured a diverse program of musical performances, with many of our junior music students taking to the stage to showcase the skills they have developed throughout the year. Their confidence, enthusiasm and musical ability were on full display as they performed a variety of pieces across different styles and genres.

Adding to the occasion, several senior students presented performances that form part of their bodies of work.

Their dedication, technical skill and artistic expression highlighted the high standard of achie ement being demonstrated by our senior CAPA students and provided younger students with an inspiring glimpse of what can be achie ed through continued commitment to the arts.

A highlight of the evening was the professional production quality achieved through the efforts of Toormina High School’s VET Entertainment students, who were responsible for engineering the sound and lighting throughout the event. Their behind the scenes e pertise ensured each

performance was presented at its ery best and provided an authentic opportunity for students to apply their industry skills in a live production setting.

The evening was a wonderful celebration of student achie ement and re ected the strength of the Creative and Performing Arts programs at Toormina High School. It also highlighted the important role the arts play in fostering creati ity, confidence, collaboration and self-expression among young people.

Toormina High School extends its congratulations to all students who participated and thanks the CAPA staff for their dedication in preparing such a memorable e ent for our school community.

ell us a little about your role at Toormina High School and what inspired your passion for dance education?

I'm a Dance, Drama and English teacher at Toormina High School and love that I'm able to share my passion for the performing arts with our students. I teach elective dance, performance dance groups as well as mentoring some of our Toormina HS students as they choreograph and teach routines to Crossmaglen PS and Toormina PS dance ensembles.

I grew up in a single parent family so money was always tight but I was fortunate enough that my Mum was able to create a contra deal with my dance teacher, Julie Ross, so that I was able to access dance lessons. Julie Ross Dance Studio nurtured my love for dance and provided me with a place to feel truly authentic as I grew and developed as a dancer. This formed the inspiration for me to take dance into public schools and provide opportunities for all students, no matter their background, to access the joy that I felt when dancing and performing on stage.

What was your vision when you introduced 70 COFFS COAST focus

Performance Dance to THS?

I like to think that our students will leave school being confident, creative and collaborative individuals who are willing to step outside their comfort zone and contribute positively to their community.

I wanted to provide a space that was safe and inclusive, where all students could have access to the gift of dance. Over the years, I've taught students from all walks of life, with a huge range of skills. I've had students in our dance ensembles that have never set foot in a dance class right through to those that dance 20 hours or more a week. I've taught refugee students, I've mentored students from low SES backgrounds, I've had students from the LGBTQI+ community share their gifts in our ensembles and one thing that every student has in common, is a passion for dance that has only grown and developed through our different dance offerings. Dance in a school context is special and unique to the outside competitive world and I love that we are able to create an inclusive environment for all students to thrive.

How has the annual Flourish concert grown since it rst e an

ast year was our first Flourish event, and it was incredible to see our Bongil Bongil Community of Schools come together to share their dance, music and choral talents with our community. This year we have over 450 performers involved with another 60 students from our VET Entertainment and VET Hospitality courses running the backstage elements of the production as well as catering and serving our cafe and VIP canapes event.

This year I have created the Bongil Bongil Dance Academy which is made up of gifted dancers from our Bongil Bongil Community of Schools (Boambee PS, Bonville PS, Crossmaglen PS, Sawtell PS, Toormina PS and William Bayldon PS). They have had a routine choreographed by two of our talented year 10 dance students and they will share their piece at Flourish this year. at s i s an con ence o stu ents gain through participating in dance and performance?

Students gain so much from the performing arts. side from the physical benefits of dance, they gain everything from commitment and self-expression to leadership and communication skills. I like to think that our students will lea e school being confident, creative and collaborative individuals who are willing to step outside their comfort zone and contribute positively to their community - along with a bundle of core memories made whilst dancing on stage with their friends.

What does it mean to have students from across the Bongil Bongil schools working together through the arts?

It creates such a special and unique bond between our students. Our primary school students are inspired by the older students and the high school students are provided with leadership opportunities as they mentor and guide the younger students during the course of rehearsals and across the performance. Every student feels valued and they are connected through their love of the performing arts as we celebrate every student. The community response to Flourish last year was incredible with everyone from parents to teachers and students asking whether or not we would

be making it an annual event! It's clearly something special we are creating through the arts.

How did it feel to be recognised with an Excellence Award and to be named a na ist or ustra ian eac er o t e ear

I hope dance at THS continues to grow and ourish so that e ery student knows there is a place for them to belong, create and perform. I would love to see more students involved, more pathways for young dancers to develop their skills and leadership and stronger connections with our wider community through performances and events. Most of all, I look forward to watching our students build confidence, creati ity and lifelong memories as they showcase their talents year after year at events such as Flourish.

I was very surprised to hear that I was even nominated. It is a very humbling experience knowing that my school community values me enough to even nominate me, let alone being recognised with an excellence award and named as a finalist. There are so many incredible educators shaping our future generation, so it's pretty surreal to be recognised for doing something I love.

What are your hopes for the future of Per ormance ance at

What has been your proudest moment as a dance educator?

You would think that it's the eisteddfod placings, or the students being selected for regional and state dance ensembles, but it's actually the small moments that make me proudest. When I see someone helping another student with choreography on the side of the room, or adjusting a part of their friend's costume before they go on stage so that everyone looks amazing, that's what makes me smile, that's what makes me proud as I know

ith almost nine years e perience in education, journalism and communications, Viktoriia helped develop Ukraine’s current school reform. She enjoys travelling and is an enthusiastic animal lover, especially of cats.

Yuliia lives with her family of four, enjoys gardening, traditional Ukrainian foods such as dumplings and borsch, listening to music and watching Turkish television. Due to the invasion and safety concerns, she has taught online for the past four years. This was her first international trip.

For someone living in regional Australia, getting mental health support can be as challenging as the condition itself. Long waiting lists. Hours of travel. Limited specialist services. For many people, accessing timely mental health care depends largely on where they live.

A

manda Butt believes it shouldn't.

An endorsed Nurse Practitioner, Credentialed Mental Health Nurse and Health Technology Leader, Amanda is on a mission to make specialist mental health care more accessible, regardless of postcode.

As founder and CEO of NPathy, Australia's first irtual nurse led mental health clinic, she is helping reshape how mental health care is delivered.

Amanda’s work is driven by a simple question: How can technology help connect more people with high quality, person centred care

witnessed people cycling through emergency departments and receiving fragmented care before eventually falling through the cracks.

"I wanted to create a model where mental health care could be delivered directly, virtually and consistently," said Amanda.

"It became impossible to ignore the disconnect between need and access," Amanda says.

Seeing the gaps in the system

The need is particularly acute in regional and rural Australia.

Amanda's path into mental health nursing was driven by a desire to understand the whole person, not just their diagnosis.

"I quickly realised that mental health presentations were rarely just mental health.

They were deeply intertwined with physical health, trauma, social context and system gaps," she said.

Working across Australia's health system, she

This leaves rural and remote communities more vulnerable to psychological distress and suicide.

Amanda Butt is the founder of NPathy, Australia’s first virtual nurse-led mental health clinic.

Rather than viewing these challenges as insurmountable, Amanda saw an opportunity to rethink how care could be delivered.

A new model of care

A mental health nurse practitioner is an ad anced masters qualified nurse who can assess, diagnose and treat mental health conditions. They can prescribe medication, provide psychotherapy and coordinate care, delivering a holistic approach to both mental and physical health.

“We can assess a patient holistically, treat across psychological, biological and social domains, and adjust care in real time,” said Amanda.

The virtual advantage ar from being a simplified ersion of face to-face care, Amanda says virtual care can offer the same quality of care while removing many of the barriers that prevent people from seeking help.

“It’s not lighter care because it’s virtual. In fact, it can be more responsive and consistent because it reduces barriers to follow-up,” she said.

This holistic approach can uncover underlying health issues that may be contributing to a person's mental health challenges.

She has seen how quickly people engage when access barriers are removed. “Many patients don’t need persuasion, they need availability, clarity and consistency,” she said.

Amanda has seen cases where symptoms initially attributed to anxiety or depression were linked to previously undiagnosed conditions such as thyroid dysfunction,

“Some patients feel more comfortable opening up in their own environment, which can help build trust more quickly and support earlier engagement.”

Leading the change Amanda’s impact extends beyond clinical practice. She has held leadership roles across the healthcare sector, including serving as Vice President and Acting President of the Australian College of Nurse Practitioners.

Her leadership was recently recognised with the 2026 Bonnie Boezeman AO Leadership in Nursing Scholarship, which will support her studies in Southern Cross University’s Master of Healthcare Leadership.

The scholarship, awarded in partnership with hief ecuti e omen, re ects her contribution to advancing nursing leadership and healthcare innovation.

Her goal is simple: a healthcare system where access to quality mental health care is not determined by geography, financial circumstances or a person’s ability to navigate a complex system.

“I hope every Australian can access the support they need, when they need it, regardless of where they live.”

Founded by Coffs Harbour local and professional groomer Jazz Fitzgerald, The Pup Cup Dog Grooming Competition brings together competitors, educators, industry leaders and dog lovers from across Australia and beyond. Ahead of this year’s event, we spoke with Jazz and James about the inspiration behind The Pup Cup, the evolution of the competition, and why it’s about so much more than just giving dogs a haircut.

What inspired you to create The Pup Cup, and how did the idea rst come a out The Pup Cup was established in 2017 and has successfully taken place in Coffs Harbour, Brisbane, and Cairns.

The concept emerged for several reasons.

Jazz is a born local of Coffs Harbour and owner and operator of Jazz’s Dog Grooming established in 2014. After entering grooming competitions in major cities, Jazz wanted to introduce a grooming event in her hometown.

With valuable input from fellow groomers, Jazz developed a schedule and guidelines that catered to all experience levels, ensuring a more relaxed atmosphere compared to traditional grooming competitions. She

We have some of the rarest breeds in the world attending as well, such as the Sealyham Terrier and Dandie Dinmont Terrier.

Our creative class is one of our major attractions, where imagination and artistic e pression ourish n this e citing segment, dogs are safely and colourfully dyed and sculpted into various themes or characters, allowing the minds of creative groomers to run wild.

That’s absolutely correct! Grooming encompasses much more than merely giving a dog a haircut or bath. It involves a blend of science, welfare, history, art, and fashion whilst displaying humanity.

o i ou rst et in o e in sna e catc in an re ocation or I’ve always had an interest in reptiles, largely because my father, Steve McEwan, kept and worked with them throughout my childhood as part of his Reptile World awareness displays.

Growing up around reptiles gave me a genuine appreciation for these animals and an understanding of their behaviour. Over time, that passion developed into snake catching and relocation work, allowing me to help both the local community and native wildlife when their paths cross. at are t e most common sna e species ou are ca e out to re ocate in our re ion The most common species we encounter are Red-bellied Black Snakes, Carpet Pythons and common Tree Snakes. A lot of people assume that any brown-coloured snake is an Eastern Brown Snake, which is often not the case, and in the Coffs Harbour area we typically don t find them within the city itself.

Most snakes are simply following food sources or looking for a new living place after their environment has been cleared due to urban sprawl. If an area has an abundance of rodents, frogs or lizards, it can naturally attract snakes into the space. These food sources are often encouraged around homes without people realising through things like overgrown foliage, dense garden areas, or materials left low-lying to the ground that provide ideal habitat for rodents and other small animals. at s ou peop e o i t e isco er a sna e on t eir propert The most important thing is to stay calm and keep a safe distance. Keep children and pets away from the area and avoid attempting to catch or move the snake yourself. Most bites occur when people attempt to handle a snake themselves.

STANDING UP FOR SMALL BUSINESS

alk down the main street of any community in regional NSW today and count the shops.

Then count the empty shopfronts and the ones that have closed in the past 12 months.

Look at the empty windows where there used to be a bakery, orist or clothes shop run by someone whose name the locals know. ecently, business confidence in 14 per cent.

Think about that. Out of every 100 businesses in our community, 86 have said they do not believe things are going to get better. Half expect their revenue to fall this year. That is not just a slow economic quarter. All of their costs are rising energy, insurance, wages and fuel.

Everything is becoming more expensive.

Unfortunately, there are some people who see a business turn over $1 million and automatically assume the owner is rich. They do not see the expenses like wages, rent and the costs of keeping the doors open. They do not see the suppliers who need paying on Friday whether any customers came in or not, the insurance that has doubled and the bank that wants its money right now.

There is an assumption in certain quarters of politics that small business owners are all rich people who need more regulation and red tape to keep them in check.

That assumption is lazy and wrong.

The local plumber working out of his ute, the young mum who runs the cafe and is there at fi e in the morning to open up, and the tradie with three apprentices and a workshop out the back are not millionaires.

They are people who took a risk on themselves.

To see how out of touch the people in charge have become, take a look at Labor’s Federal Budget. The Treasurer has decided that trusts are loopholes instead of business structures, that distributing income to one’s spouse and kids who work in the business is some kind of rort, and that Labor is entitled to take 30 per cent of profits before a single dollar is put on the business owner’s table.

There is a reason that memes have been calling the Prime Minister a silent shareholder in every small business on the Coffs Coast and across Australia.

He did not put up a cent. He did not take any of the risk. e did not open the doors at fi e in the morning or work on weekends, but he waltzes in and wants his half-share anyway.

When small business owners said this was going to hurt, the response from Labor was that those owners should all have a Bex and a good lie down. That is the level of contempt that Labor has for the small businesses who keep this country and the Coffs Coast running.

Chris Minns and Anthony Albanese are failing NSW businesses. They have contempt for aspiration. That word, aspiration, is these days

met with suspicion. As if wanting to build something of your own, be your own boss, have your kids work alongside you and maybe take over the business one day is somehow greedy.

That is not greedy.

Aspiration is one of the oldest and most decent ambitions a person can have.

To make and own something, to contribute something to our society, and to leave it better than you found it.

Every small business in NSW is a vote of confidence in the future. omeone signed a lease, someone borrowed money and someone ga e a young person their first ob. hen businesses lose confidence and close, something in our society breaks - something that cannot be replaced with a government program.

The Liberals and Nationals understand that. It is in our DNA because a lot of us were in small business, or our parents were, or our neighbour still is.

Our message to businesses is clear: we’re going to back you and get out of your way. We will cut the red tape because we trust owners to know their business better than any politician can.

To any small business operator wondering whether it is worth it, I say that it is worth it.

Business owners work hard; that work is often lonely, seven days a week and thankless.

But their work matters. Our community and our economy needs them.

Guulabaa – Place of Koala was conceived in direct response to the catastrophic 2019–20 lack ummer bushfires, which impacted koala habitat across the region. A unique partnership between Forestry Corporation of NSW, Koala Conservation Australia, Wildnets Adventure Park, Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail, and Bunyah Local Aboriginal Land Council saw the development of a Guulabaa Master Plan via a process facilitated by Gensler Australia. This document still guides Guulabaa’s management today.

Guulabaa is grounded in deep collaboration with First Nations communities, from integrating traditional cool burning practices to reduce bushfire risk and restore forest health, to sharing of culture and language.

This approach also enabled the use of local sustainably sourced native hardwoods in construction, with the support of the North Coast timber industry. Guulabaa sets a benchmark for ecologically responsible and culturally informed design with Caring for Country in mind.

For two decades, Chris Hines and the team at UNREALestate have been helping locals buy, sell and invest in property across the region.

What began as a business born out of necessity has grown into one of the Coffs Coast’s most respected independent boutique agencies, built on honesty, community spirit and a genuine commitment to people.

As UNREALestate celebrates its 20th anniversary, Chris reflects on the challenges, triumphs and lessons that have shaped the business over the past two decades.

wenty years in business is an incredible achievement.

How does it feel to reach this milestone, and what inspired you to establish UNREALestate?

“If you had told me 20 years ago that we’d still be going, I would have been shocked,” Chris laughs. “When you start a business, there’s never any guarantee of success, and the reality is that many businesses fail. Those first few months are absolutely critical, and it took grit, determination and a great deal of hard work to keep everything moving forward.”

The agency’s beginnings were driven by circumstance.

“My wife Kerry and I were working for another agency and, to cut a long story short, we suddenly found ourselves without jobs. With six children to support, those were very tough times. Out of that necessity, UNREALestate was born.”

What were some of the biggest challenges in those early years, and what achievements stand out most?

“Nearly eight years ago we lost my wife Kerry to cancer. t was an incredibly difficult time while I cared for her and tried to keep the business running. Many people thought her passing would be the beginning of the end for UNREALestate, but our team rallied. We sur i ed, and then we ourished again. en today we’re consistently rated among the Top 5 agencies on the Coffs Coast by RateMyAgent.”

How has the real estate industry evolved over the past 20 years?

Chris recalls long days and even longer nights.

“Without question, honesty has always been our guiding principle,” Chris says.

“There’s no point sugar-coating things for sellers, buyers, landlords or tenants. People need clear, accurate and honest information to make important decisions.”

He also credits the agency’s people for its success.

“Our team, in all its forms over the years, has been a huge part of the business. We’ve been fortunate to work with some wonderful people, many of whom have gone on to become successful business owners themselves.”

What advice would you give someone considering a career in real estate today?

Chris encourages newcomers to invest in education first.

“Nothing makes you more attractive as a potential employee than already working towards your real estate licence, or even better, having it before applying for a job.”

He also believes it’s important to understand the reality of the profession.

“Real estate isn’t just about dressing well and

walking through beautiful homes. It’s about talking to people, understanding their needs and helping them. Resilience is essential because every day is different. Some days are fantastic and others are incredibly challenging, but you need to turn up every day and do your best for every client.”

What excites you about the future of UNREALestate?

“The industry is always evolving, and that’s what makes it exciting,” Chris says. “No matter what governments or banks do, people will always need homes.”

Finally, how will you celebrate this incredible milestone?

Chris says the occasion will likely be marked with quiet re ection.

“I’ll spend some time thinking about where we’ve been, where we are now and what the future holds, and who knows, perhaps a couple of quiet, or maybe We’re local, we not-so-quiet, celebratory live local and drinks.”

He’s also excited about a very personal new chapter.

“I’m very much looking forward to the future with a very special lady, Kim, who has agreed to marry me. What started as a friendship has evolved into so much more, and fittingly, she also happens to be the longest-serving employee I’ve ever had.”
