Gurmesh Singh has spent decades living, working, and raising a family on the Coffs Coast, and now he’s stepped into one of the biggest roles in state politics as the newly elected Leader of the NSW Nationals. In this interview, he reflects on what the milestone means, how his local roots will guide his leadership, and the vision he holds for Regional NSW.

i Gurmesh. You’ve lived and worked in our region for a long time now, what was going through your mind when you realised you’d been chosen to lead the NSW Nationals?

A million things were going through my mind.

I felt the weight of the responsibility ahead, and at the same time I was wondering how I would balance it all with family life, keeping some time aside for exercise and the things that keep me grounded.

You’ve often talked about your love of 18 COFFS COAST focus

this community. How has growing up and raising a family here shaped the kind of leader you want to be?

The Coffs Coast is the best place in the world to raise a young family. It is small enough that you still feel that community connection, but big enough to enjoy facilities that many regional areas miss out on. Growing up here, and now raising my own kids here, has shaped my belief that every young person in Regional NSW deserves the same opportunities as someone in a capital city. Better jobs, better services, and a future they can build close to home.

People in the area know you as a farmer, a small business owner, and someone they bump into at local events. How do you plan to keep that grounded, approachable style now that you’re leading the party?

I am very lucky to have a strong circle of friends and a big family who make sure my feet stay on the ground. The part of the job I enjoy most is the informal side of public life. It is the chats at local events, the quick yarns at a coffee shop, and the chance meetings around town. I plan to keep that routine because it keeps me connected to what really matters.

Taking on such a visible leadership role is

The response from the Indian Australian community has been overwhelming and genuinely moving. People have told me they feel proud to see someone from a Sikh and Punjabi background in this role. I have always felt Australian first and that has sha ed my outlook and the way I serve. My heritage is part of who I am, but the most important thing to me is the belief that this country gives everyone a fair go.

It all came together very quickly, and there was not much time to sit down and weigh up every pro and con. It was more a conversation about whether we were ready to take on something bigger and whether we believed it was the right moment to step up. In the end, we did what families across our region often do. We backed each other. ou re now the rst erson o ikh Punjabi background to lead a major political party in Australia. How does that

government to deliver its fair share for the Coffs Coast and for Regional NSW.

The issues that hit closest to home are the ones our community feels most sharply.

Housing stress, whether it is high rents or impossible mortgages, is one of the biggest challenges we face. Rising crime, especially involving young offenders, is also worrying many locals. We need our health system to keep pace with an ageing population; but above all, the cost of living is the issue we hear about every day. With Christmas approaching and back to school just around the corner, families are really feeling the pressure.

People around here appreciate honesty and straight talk. What’s one thing you want locals to understand about your vision that might not come across in the

change. I will continue my focus on listening, on bringing people together and on fighting for practical outcomes that make daily life a little easier for families, small businesses and the villages, towns, and cities that hold Regional NSW together.

I want our community to know that I will always ut locals first that ll be honest about the challenges before us, and that I’ll push every level of government to deliver its fair share for the Coffs Coast and for Regional NSW. A few years from now, I hope people will be able to say that my leadership helped steady the shi in difficult times strengthened our region’s voice, and made space for unity rather than division. Above all, I hope they say we got things done - not for headlines, but for the homes, the livelihoods and the future of the place we all call home.

The North Coast Special Olympics started in 2012 in Coffs Harbour with a small group of athletes, and has now grown to over 60 athletes who train and play in competitions in Ten Pin Bowling, Swimming, Gymnastics and Golf.

This year North Coast Special Olympics are very proud to have seven athletes; Gymnasts Jen Klein, Tash Butcher, Tiana Legge, Annie Child and Bella Richmond, and two golfers James Robertson and Josh Ives, selected to represent our area as part of TEAM NSW at the 2026 Special Olympics National Games in Melbourne from 19 – 23 October 2026. We spoke to Jen and James about their journey and how we can get behind them in the lead up to the Games.

i en ongratulations on being selected for the 2026 National Games!

How did you feel when you rst heard the news? I felt excited

when our coach Marie told us we had been selected. It felt really big to me and it's something I hadn't done before. I was excited for my friends who were selected too.

What does representing NSW on a national stage mean to you personally?

It means I'm getting to do something I never thought I would ever do. I feel proud to represent NSW and my North Coast Gym Club.

How long have you been involved in

gymnastics with North Coast Special Olympics? It has been about 7 years since I started gymnastics. I can do so much more than when I started.

What do you love most about gymnastics as a sport? Everyone having fun and cheering each other on.

What does a typical training week look like for you? I train on Tuesdays with my coach arie and try to kee fit during the week by walking each day and making healthy food choices.

Who has supported you most on your journey to this point? Rhonda, my support worker, has been with me ever since I started gymnastics. She has always been very supportive of me and knows I can do this.

What are you most looking forward to about travelling to Melbourne for the Games? Seeing how big it is at the venue and seeing how many eo le are going to be there.

I am excited to travel to Melbourne with my team Is there one skill or routine you’re especially excited to showcase at Nationals? really love doing my oor routine and I hope I do it really well.

How can your community rally behind you through fundraising and support?

By attending fund-raisers. Stay tuned for two Trivia nights to be held in February at the C.ex Coffs Harbour!

i James. How did it feel to nd out you had been selected to re resent W in gol at the ational ames?

It felt great to get selected. I got sent an email from our selection team in Sydney and was very happy to be part of the NSW Team. Josh Ives, who is another golfer from here was also selected and that was good to hear. We feel proud to represent our town and region.

When did you rst start laying gol with orth oast ecial lym ics?

I started playing golf with Special Olympics six years ago with Brendan Barnes, our coach, at Sawtell Golf Club. We go every Tuesday 22 COFFS COAST focus

afternoon to our group golf lesson. It's great fun and I learn a lot.

What rst s arked your love o the game?

When I heard about Special Olympics Golf I was keen to join.

Golf is a good sport because you meet new people, you get outdoors and you get to play in a group. That's fun.

I tried golf at high school and thought it was fun. When I heard about Special Olympics Golf I was keen to join.

What s your avourite art o being out on the gol course?

Being with people, having fun with the other Special Olympic golfers. Every Tuesday, Brendan our coach teaches us how to play better, he makes it fun but we learn the rules. I like getting better at my game. ow do you usually prepare for a com etition mentally

I make sure I practice each week. I build up my ability to walk around the course by playing a game a few times a week. For a competition I

walk the course before if I can and then make sure I focus on where I want the ball to go.

Competing at a national level is a big step, what excites you most about the experience?

I am very excited to go to the Nationals. Two of us from Coffs Harbour have been selected for the NSW Special Olympics Golf Team for 2026. Josh and I both went to the Special Olympics Nationals in Tasmania in 2022. It's great we both get to go again this time.

It was great to attend as athletes come from around Australia and we get to play against each other. Last time I came second in my division nationally in golf. It was the best experience. I am really looking forward to going and playing with other golfers.

What else are you looking forward to about the trip to Melbourne?

I am looking forward to playing on a different golf course. I haven’t played in Melbourne.

Also being in the opening ceremony, we all march as a team, that’s pretty special.

How important has encouragement from your family, coaches and community been on your journey?

It has been really important, I don’t think I could have got to this level in my golf without everyone’s encouragement. Thanks to my family especially Mum and Dad, my coach Brendan, Kate our Golf Manager, Letitia my support worker, and the awesome committee as well as the other athletes at Special Olympics for helping me make it to the Nationals.

I hope I make them all proud.

The team is required to fundraise for the Games, how can we get behind you and show our support?

We all need to pay our own costs to go to the Nationals so we are starting to do fundraisers to help us all make it. ARTISTS of the MONTH

Two talented young local artists, Zoe McDonald and Delenn Croaker, have been selected for ARTEXPRESS 2026! Their deeply personal and beautifully executed bodies of work not only showcase exceptional skill, but also offer powerful reflections on womanhood, identity, place and belonging, marking them as emerging creatives to watch.

H

i Delenn. Being selected for ARTEXPRESS 2026 is a huge honour, how did you feel when you found out the news?

I think I was, and still am shocked and in a state of disbelief. I remember searching up last year’s ARTEXPRESS Exhibition and being blown away by the skill and talent of the artists, so to be selected feels absolutely surreal and such a blessing.

Your Body of Work, ‘Drawn to the Shore’, explores the ocean as a place of peace and belonging. What inspired this theme?

In my early childhood I grew up in Tamworth, and if anyone knows anything about Tamworth it’s a dry, inland town with not much escape besides the muddy river down the road. During primary school we moved to Coffs Harbour and this move felt like an absolute dream. Every day was spent down at the beach with my siblings and friends snorkelling surfing and swimming However, as I got older the ocean shifted from merely a place of leisure to a sense of beautiful escapism. I could take every worry and stressed out thought to the beach, and as soon as I dived into the water it felt like it was washing not just salt water over me, but a profound sense of peace. The ocean has become a lifeline for me, a place where I can just sit with every demanding thought and feel it wash away with the tides as I admire God’s creation. I wanted to incorporate this beautiful 24 COFFS COAST focus

sense of peace and belonging in my body of work, allowing the audience to visually see the freedom that a life by the ocean can offer; while introspectively understanding the deeper sense of identity it plays within my life.

Why did you choose graphite as your primary medium for this series?

In my senior years of school, I experimented with a really large range of mediums to figure out what suited my skillset most. One of the first lessons in ear we had to do was a small realistic drawing with graphite pencil of an elderly man. I was very apprehensive and doubted that I could replicate the photograph, but as I started to work with the medium, I realised that using graphite wasn’t scary at all. It was all about taking time on the small details to allow the bigger picture to form.

That sparked my love for graphite, and from there I began developing my skills, working out the dos and don’ts of graphite pencils and eventually reaching a ow state where could disconnect and draw for hours without realising the time that had gone by.

What do you love most about working in black and white rather than colour?

The scenes and reference images I used for my body of work were all very colourful and bright photographs, so by taking out the element of colour imagery I allow the audience a space where they can cognitively think and draw creative conclusions from their own imagination. One person might view a drawing as a sunset and another a blue skied

DELENN CROAKER scene, and that’s truly the beauty behind it; it gives the audience the autonomy to relate their personal experiences with my drawings.

What do you hope viewers will feel when they experience your work in the ARTEXPRESS Exhibition space?

Through my body of work, I present my personal experience and connection with the ocean, but I want it to become a collection that invites the audience to introspectively question what role nature plays within their personal lifestyle. I want viewers to feel a sense of peace and happiness not only portrayed within the drawings but related back to their experiences at the ocean.

What does this selection mean to you personally as an emerging artist?

Art and drawing for me has only ever been a hobby and something for my own personal enjoyment. However, through the selection of ARTEXPRESS and increased media publicity, my projects have become artworks that people are seeking to enjoy within their own personal lives. y first reaction was definitely a big sigh of relief ince receiving the notification for the nomination was nervously waiting to hear the final selection t s such a nerve racking feeling having that achievement feel so close yet so far hen got the message from N A that had been selected was so shocked it was an incredible feeling Your Body of Work, ‘The Disjunction of Collective Properties’, explores the personal, private and public personas of women. the use of handbags in the lives of women and e lore the idea of re resentational drawing and how ones belonging can communicate so much about themselves and their lives You've used handbags and their contents as powerful visual symbols, why did you choose these everyday objects? y body of work utilises the handbag as a symbol acknowledging the dichotomy between the curated e terior that is resented to the world and the interior that is a rivate s ace ooking into a woman s handbag is an unwritten rule that is taught societally y entering this rivate s ace the viewer automatically understands a level of intimacy between the artwork and themselves n overly dis laying the contents of a handbag the audience is drawn into the lives of the bag s owner and recognises the different lives being dis layed How would you describe your style and what was your medium of choice? wouldn t say have a articular style for my art yet as ve focused on e erimentation in a wide variety of mediums and styles rather than develo ing a singular style t is definitely a goal of mine now that have the time to create more freely after graduation to curate a style and delve into that decided on realism for my body of work as a way to develo my skills and e lore a

You photograph everything from weddings, families, couples to even businesses, what do all of these genres have in common for you at their core?

At their core, it’s the people. Just people doing cute people things. Whether it’s a couple so in love they want to celebrate it with friends and family, siblings recreating a photo stance from 35 years ago (now with a baby on one hip and Mum with grey hair on the other) or someone wanting a quiet moment with their partner to frame on the TV stand, it’s people connecting and wanting to freeze that connection in an image. Even in candid business shoots, it’s still about the people - one idea from one person has grown into something tangible that brings community and talent together. What an honour to capture!

How do you help your clients feel relaxed and truly themselves during a shoot, especially those who feel awkward in front of the camera?

Firstly, I try to leave the house looking pretty average. This works for me because it means I can be in comfortable loungewear, and it makes the client feel way more put together ;) I usually preface a session with “I’m really bad at posing so let’s get those ones over 30 COFFS COAST focus

and done with and then you can just relax”.

Little do they know, it’s in the relaxing stage that I get the best candid images! I’m always surprised (and so are my clients) by how many images end up in the gallery that come I’m always from those seemingly surprised (and “uncapturable” so are my clients) by moments. It’s really how many images nice, most clients say end up in the gallery at the end “that was that come from pretty fun!” Or “that those seemingly wasn’t nearly as bad as “uncapturable” I thought it was going moments. to be!”.

What’s involved in your creative rocess rom the rst en uiry through to the nal delivery o images?

My creative process usually starts with a phone call, text, or email, where we chat about your photoshoot needs and wants and lock in a date and location. On the day of the shoot, I like to arrive about 20 minutes early to quietly scope the area and gather ideas without adhering too rigidly to a plan.

Typically, I’ll spend 30 minutes to an hour with my clients (longer for weddings), capturing a variety of moments.

After the shoot, I’ll send a few edited sneak peeks to get clients excited for the full gallery.

Then, I spend a few days culling and editing all the images. Once everything is polished, the final images are delivered via a rivate online gallery, ready to be downloaded, shared, printed, and framed. I try and keep my process as simple as possible!

When someone looks back at a gallery you’ve created for them years from now, what do you hope they feel?

I hope they feel transported back to that very moment - the tiny I’ve been the button and how weight of their baby’s exploring to edit. feet cradled in their commercial video Do you have any hands; how nervous work for local exciting projects, they felt waiting to businesses, which collaborations or propose; how much could turn into creative directions fun they had playing in something solid you’re exploring down the track. the backyard with their next? healthy, happy kids. Is it weird to say “my eyes”? I’m totally selftaught when it comes to my camera and I’ve never been particularly interested in learning more about it (that does feel wrong to say).

For me, it’s all about what I can see; the moment, the lighting, the composition, the style I bring in editing. The camera itself is just a tool; it’s my eyes that tell me when to click

other local creatives. Lately, I’ve been exploring commercial video work for local businesses, which could turn into something solid down the track. I’m interested in studying Film & TV, with a focus on cinematography (we’ll see). On a special note, I recently completed two hugely successful “Pup Portrait” days at Gowings Coffs Central! Such a cute project that I plan on expanding. The best thing about photography is that the scope doesn’t have boundaries and there’s not a lot of rules; you can capture quite literally anything!

A er the huge success of the Awake Is The New Sleep 20th Anniversary Tour, Ben Lee is hitting the road once again, this time for a 40-date regional tour that brings him back to the grassroots spirit he loves most about performing. Ahead of his Bellingen Memorial Hall show on Wednesday 7th January, Ben chats with us about the freedom of touring without a plan, the magic of regional audiences, and why making music still feels as exciting as ever.

here s no logic mean there are a handful of songs that I play every night - the “hits” so to speak, but then there is a lot of room to play and evolve and explore because I have such a big catalogue built over 3 and a bit decades After so many years of touring, has your relationship with life on the road changed?

ou’re bringing the Starlights Tour to Coffs Harbour this summer, what can fans expect from this show compared to past tours?

having been part of their lives is just such a great shot to the heart. You often don’t see it as people are consuming music in their homes and personal lives so when we play, we get to see that connection in real time and it doesn’t get old…it’s getting more and more powerful.

We are just going all in on a big show. It’s a huge setlist and the set has some great dynamics and unique moments and we fully appreciate that a lot of the audience might not have seen us for a very long time so we want to bring something that really delivers. We haven’t done a run where there are multiple shows a week for a very long time so we are looking forward to having the live machine really dialled and when that happens the shows are pretty electric. You can expect to see some very energised birds on stage.

How does the energy of regional audiences compare to capital city crowds, and what do you most look forward to about playing the Mid North Coast?

Your music has evolved so much over the years. How do you strike the balance between celebrating the classics and showcasing the newer material on tour?

Good question as that is one thing we still struggle with after all these years and to be honest that’s always the challenge with putting a set together. We are always wanting to put new or older deep cuts in to change this up but it’s not always well received. There is always going to be a hardcore smaller group of folks who want those songs but it can often go over the heads of the casual fans who just want the known quantities. I think it really depends on the type of show and venues too.

Sometimes you think you’ve got it right putting in some more challenging works but then on the night the vibe is just a bit of a party so we are always ready to pivot and play to that energy.

After so many years of touring together, what excites you most about stepping on stage as Birds Of Tokyo in 2026?

It just becomes a deeper appreciation of what a privilege it is to still be doing this after so many years. We take nothing for granted anymore. Watching how deeply some of this music resonates with people as

their own parents is a real stoke. Bands like Birds can only exist for as long as we have, which is about 23 years now, because of the support of this audience. Everything we have achieved we owe to these people and thank them dearly for this.

Looking back on your journey so far, what moments still stand out as career highlights?

itchell, take us back to the beginning. What rst ins ired you to ursue a career in ood and how did that ath eventually ue era?

I started cooking when I was 16 in Port Stephens, so coming back to the east coast feels a bit like a homecoming. I spent a big part of my career in New Zealand and London and those years were paramount in shaping how I cook and who I am. After so much time away, it felt like the right moment to build something personal. With Bar Que Sera, and my partnership with Jason and Duane, I’ve had the chance to channel my experience into a beautiful coastal restaurant. ar ue era has built a strong re utation or elevated coastal dining ow would you describe your ersonal ood hiloso hy and the style you bring to the menu?

Simply put: I cook the food I like to eat.

berries, tomatoes, stone fruit. Everything feels lighter, brighter, and more expressive. It’s a great time to cook, and a great time to dine.

Great food comes from a great team. Tell us about your kitchen crew.

We’re unique in that it’s just myself and one other chef, Nick who I’ve worked with before.

I actually pulled him straight out of high school, and he did his apprenticeship under me. In a small team, trust and understanding are everything. When we reopened Bar Que Sera, I needed someone with passion, curiosity, and enthusiasm equal to my own.

Nick fits that erfectly e communicate intuitively, which is essential when you’re working in such an intimate space.

As Head Chef, how do you balance creativity with consistency, delivering dishes that evolve while still meeting guest expectations?

Creativity drives you forward, but consistency builds trust. For me, the two go hand in hand: creativity isn’t about constantly reinventing the wheel it s about refining and elevating what we do. Sometimes the most meaningful change is a small tweak, a better oil, a new herb, a small shift in acidity. Those

adjustments keep the menu alive without losing the essence of the dish, and because we print our menus in-house, we can make those changes as soon as inspiration strikes.

Since becoming Head Chef, what has been one of your proudest moments?

Our reopening, without a doubt. Working with Jason and Duane on a project that genuinely re ects our shared vision for dining and hospitality has been incredibly rewarding.

Seeing the dining room full and buzzing, watching guests connect with the food, the wine, and the atmosphere, that’s the moment you realise all the long days were worth it.

The Coffs Coast dining scene is evolving quickly. How do you stay inspired and keep the menu fresh for returning guests?

It truly is evolving, and we’re proud to be a part of that. Inspiration comes from everywhere, the produce, other chefs, travel, even just walking through the market, but staying inspired is really about staying curious.

Because our menu changes frequently, often weekly, guests always have something new to look forward to. And the wine list evolves alongside it, which keeps things exciting for both the kitchen and the dining room.

Running a regional restaurant comes with

unique opportunities and challenges.

What do you enjoy most about cooking on the Coffs Coast?

There’s a genuine sense of community here.

People care about food, and they care about the people making it. That connection motivates us, and the access to beautiful produce, from seafood to vegetables to fruit, is an absolute gift. For a chef, that’s heaven.

Looking ahead, what can diners expect from you and Bar Que Sera in 2026?

We’re always brainstorming, about food, wine, how we deliver hospitality. We want Bar Que Sera to continue evolving, and we want to keep contributing to the local dining culture ou ll definitely see more of our monthly wine events, and we have a few ideas simmering away that we’re excited to bring to life. or rst time visitors what s the one dish they absolutely must try?

Its charm lies in its chameleon nature. Rosé can be made from almost any red grape, each variety offering its own accent. osh, King Tide Brewing has become known for brewing beers with local businesses and creatives.

What drives your interest in collaboration?

Collaboration allows us to build connection with the people and the businesses around us. Every time we start a new collab project, we learn, grow and make new friends.

Our team brings a wealth of experience to brewing beers, but there are so many rich and diverse ideas that emerge when we work with people outside of the brewing world. This keeps us from getting stuck in our own rhythm and helps us stay part of the broader community.

You have done a collab beer with Hope Road Espresso for three years running.

What has made that collaboration last?

TripleM listeners called in their ideas on the beer style the avour and the name, and we created the Coffs Easy Ale, for the people of Coffs. The thing I am most proud of is that we raised enough money from the roceeds of that beer for ink ilks rust to buy a new defibrillator for Defib ero which is now located at the oambee ervo In addition to collab beers, you have also been doing custom beer cans for locals. Tell us about that?

We saw an opportunity to get customised beer cans into the hands of locals for corporate gifts or special occasions. We

ince the release of their seminal debut Conditions in 2009, the band’s sound has transcended generations, with its cinematic, emotionally-charged songwriting leaving a lasting imprint on global music culture.

oss Stomp has exploded onto the Mid and North Coast music scene in a matter of months, did you ever expect this project to move as fast as it has?

Skotty; Not expected it, but we did speak openly that when the window of opportunity presented itself, we’d kick it wide open; say yes to everything once and promise that everything we did say yes to was done well.

The band formed after you guys reconnected back in your now hometown of Woolgoolga, what made you go “we should start something” at this time?

Greg; hen we first started laying together again it was supposed to be just a casual jam for old times sake while our kids had a play-date, but it didn’t take long for that old chemistry to take over. Skotty’s always been a 110% guy, so, once it started getting legs he’d already run halfway down the road! ow would you describe oss tom in your own words?

Skotty; the bite size catch-phrase we’ve labelled our own sound is “ Swamp Stomp Garage Rock”; but I think some of the descriptives we’ve been called this year are pretty funny if not comically accurate; “Ash Grunwald on Acid..” “.. Grunge band of the blues..” “the epitome of

fuzz-drenched resonator rock” and my personal favourite “ two metal-heads playing blues and roots”…

The live shows are a huge part of your reputation; chaotic, funny, loud and full of energy. What do you hope people take away rom a oss tom gig?

Greg; We genuinely want people to have as much fun as we are having up there and give them something they’re going away to talk about.

Skotty; Yeah, I think Fun is the objective here. As either participants or as spectators, I hope people take away the feeling of having had fun. I don’t

ever want a Boss show to be boring for the people in the room.

We wrote, recorded, mixed, and produced the record, then concepted and created the promotional artworks that adorn it. It’s all us. As artists, that’s bucket-list stuff.

You’ve known each other for more than 30 years, how does that long friendship translate on stage and in the studio?

Greg; I think the chemistry within Boss is a big part of its appeal. We’re genuine and people can relate to that. The two blokes joking with each other between songs is no act, that’s us 365 days a year doing what we’ve always naturally done.

Skotty; I think after all the time we’ve spent together on and off stages, it’s just home to us these days. We’re a little more professional than the garage days but still very much the same two kids writing a musical adventure together whilst goofing off between takes

res onse meant or your con dence as artists?

Skotty; Yes, I agree with that. It’s been a year I'll never forget that’s for sure. From playing the Big Banana to interstate travels and everything between; just mindblowing.

Greg; It’s a nod in our general direction that what we’re doing is a great thing. Musically speaking, we’re a bit of a black sheep; not really this, and not really that either. There’s no obvious genre we fit into and with that comes a little uncertainty as to how we’ll be received.

Your debut record DUST KICKER has been central to this whirlwind year, what does that album represent for you at this point in your life?

Skotty; Well I think Dust Kicker has been the “Carrot and the Stick” in moving us forward.

We set the goal to have an extended release out in our first year and that s been a huge motivator in so far as grown family men forging the personal time to pursue our own creative potential.

From open mic nights to the main stage at the Airlie Beach Music Festival in just eight months is an incredible leap, what was that like for you personally?

Greg; t s significant for us in that this is the first project where we backed ourselves and created 100% of the product! We wrote, recorded, mixed, and produced the record, then concepted and created the promotional artworks that adorn it. It’s all us. As artists, that’s bucket-list stuff.

Skotty; Yep, bigger supports on offer, mix bill invites and we’ve also been approached by a number of festivals after our Airlie appearances, so fingers crossed that all lays out well and the momentum keeps rolling.

year. Varroa management involves a regular schedule of monitoring and treatments to keep my hives healthy and productive. I like to get going early and finish u in the field before it gets hot. Everything depends on the elements, so beekeepers need to know their country and plan ahead, taking into account the weather. Afternoons and evenings are used for bottling and labelling honey. There is always some bookwork and maintenance to do.

You also run beekeeping workshops and mentoring programs. What can people expect from attending one of your sessions?

My beekeeping workshops involve one-on-one mentoring. I concentrate on the basics with an emphasis on non-adversarial beekeeping.

Beekeeping at the recreational level should be fun and safe. Disease recognition and Varroa management are also important skills to learn.

I can equip beginners with the skills necessary for success.

You’ve also given a lot back to the community through your role as Captain of the Nana Glen RFS Brigade and as a trainer. How do you balance your passion

or re ghting and beekeeping? They’re both such demanding roles!

While beekeeping is a solo activity for me, I am fortunate to have a great team to work with in the Coffs Coast team, and my fellow firefighters at Nana Glen and the Orara Valley always have my back. It is a great privilege to volunteer in the RFS.

It is a balance. Family and work come first but if the pager goes off and I’m close to the shed, I stop what I am doing and take off.

While beekeeping is a solo activity for me, I am fortunate to have a great team to work with in the Coffs Coast team and my fellow firefighters at Nana len and the Orara Valley always have my back. The next few years will be all about learning how to manage Varroa. While other countries have had it for a while, and we are learning from them, our Australian conditions are unique, and there will be challenges. The

At "Murungidyal Farm" nestled in the Orara Valley, Dale and Breea Morris of Morris Organic are leading a powerful shift toward truly regenerative, toxin-free farming. Driven by cultural knowledge, deep respect for the land and a passion for clean, ethical food, they’re showing how small-scale farmers can help reshape Australia’s food future.

W

hen did you rst learn about regenerative arming and why did it matter to you?

My understanding of regenerative farming began long before I had a farm of my own. I spent years in the bush immersed in different ecosystems, constantly observing how nature functions when it’s left undisturbed noticed that rainforests ourish without synthetic fertilisers, relying instead on natural cycles like leaf litter breaking down through worms and microorganisms. I observed animals thriving without vaccinations or drenches, using instinct and biodiversity to stay healthy. These experiences made it clear that “Mother Nature in her natural state works,” and I became determined to understand why.

As I learned more about the damage caused 66 COFFS COAST focus

by traditional farming practices like soil degradation, chemical dependence and declining biodiversity, I realised how essential regenerative farming is for repairing our food systems and environment. This approach aligned deeply with my passion for the land, and I wanted my future farm to embody this natural ow of life y the time we began our own farm, Murungidyal, I knew we wanted to work with the land, not against it. Regenerative farming became not just a method, but a purpose: to heal soil, restore ecosystems and offer our community healthy, toxin-free meat. ow did the idea or orris rganic urungidyal arm take sha e?

As first generation regenerative farmers we recognised early that the level of toxins in our food system needed to change. We saw gaps in the meat industry and misconceptions around what “good meat” really is. Traditional farming

methods often compromise soil health and livestock wellbeing, and we wanted to offer an alternative.

We immersed ourselves in learning about soil biology, holistic management and natural animal nutrition hen we urchased our first property, we named it Murungidyal, a Wiradjuri word meaning “healing” which has since guided everything we do. As a Wiradjuri farmer, incorporating cultural knowledge and helping heal Country was always a strong calling.

We wanted to produce clean, grass-fed and finished meat that was com letely free from pharmaceuticals, vaccines, herbicides and esticides meat that re ected the health of the land it came from. Eliminating chemicals protects not only our livestock, but also our waterways, soil microbes and surrounding ecosystems.

Our vision was simple: deepen our connection with nature, nurture soil health, and bring

truly natural meat directly to our community.

This mission grew into our paddock-to-plate business, Morris Organic.

Small-scale regenerative farming is, we believe, the future of Australia’s food system. We need more farms working with nature to restore soils, rebuild biodiversity and offer clean, seasonal food. We envision communities where farmers sell directly to locals, where markets thrive, and where mass-produced, chemically-dependent food is no longer the norm.

What does grass ed nished harmaceutical vaccine ree mean in daily o erations?

To us, it means our livestock are genuinely “fed by nature.” While the term grass-fed is widely used, our cattle and sheep are offered far more than grass, they graze multi-species pastures, shrubs legumes trees and even beneficial weeds that provide a full range of minerals and nutrients. Animals naturally self-select what they need to stay healthy, which reduces the need for vaccines and pharmaceuticals.

This approach requires intensive management.

We use time-controlled grazing and regularly monitor pasture growth, soil conditions and herd behaviour. Though it is labour-intensive, the outcome is worth it: animals that are healthier, land that regenerates, and meat that is clean, nutrient-dense and free of toxins. hoosing grass fed finished harmaceutical & vaccine free” meat isn’t just good for human health, it supports the health of the environment as well.

Our legacy is simple: to leave the land healthier than when we found it. We aim to restore biodiversity, rebuild soil structure and use holistic practices that regenerate rather than deplete. With climate challenges intensifying, regenerative farming is essential for healing landscapes and reducing environmental impact.

We’re committed to educating the next generation through our upcoming “Future Farmers” bush school, which will teach young people the principles of regenerative agriculture and how they can create positive change.

Looking forward, our farm shop at Upper Orara and future market stalls will provide the community with fresh “nature-fed” beef and lamb, strengthening local food access. On a broader scale, we contribute to soil rejuvenation, ecosystem restoration and carbon sequestrationcapturing CO2 through healthy plants and storing it safely in the soil. This is a vital part of addressing climate change.

Visitors can experience traditional dance, storytelling, music, ceremony, language, and art while connecting with locals in a spirit of joy and respect. Meanwhile, Birrpai: Dancing Beyond the Lens of Thomas Dick at The Gallery reframes historic photographs through a modern Aboriginal perspective, celebrating strength, continuity, and cultural reclamation.

Live performances are a highlight, blending traditional and contemporary acts. Emerging

singers, dancers, spoken-word performers, and bands join established First Nations artists on stage, combining highenergy performances, ceremonial moments, storytelling, and dance to create an unforgettable experience.

It’s a space where culture is shared proudly, and everyone, Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike, is invited to reflect, celebrate, and be inspired.

Cultural workshops give visitors a hands-on connection to tradition.

Join traditional weaving circles, try canoemaking, or explore lino printing under the guidance of Aboriginal artists, all offering tangible memories to take home. Food adds to the festival atmosphere, with family-friendly favourites like coffee, ice cream, and food trucks, alongside stalls featuring bush tucker and native ingredients.

Beyond the festival day, Saltwater Freshwater supports Aboriginal creatives year-round through exhibitions, professional development, youth mentoring, and the National Aboriginal Design Agency. Just 1 Cookies is the newest communitydriven initiative from local changemaker Troy Arvidson; a simple idea with a powerful mission: buy a cookie, help feed someone in need. Built from the same passion that fuels his grassroots food-relief project, Food Fix. Creating sustainable support for local charities and making it easier for everyday people to make a real difference.

hat was the moment that inspired the idea for Just 1 Cookies?

The community were helping out as much as they could with donations for Food Fix, but I didn’t want to keep asking every time something came up. I was also funding a lot of the projects out of my own pocket. The need in the community was increasing, and my constant thought was ‘how do I make this sustainable?’. Then one day the idea came to me. That was two years ago.

This is such a simple concept: buy a cookie, help feed someone in need. Can you share a bit about how it will run and work with local food services to distribute meals?

Just 1 Cookies will be sold at local outlets.

Funds will be channelled back into reputable organisations that provide food relief for individuals in our community. Currently Food Fix Coffs Harbour and Action Care Macksville, are su orted through the rofits oth organisations have a genuine investment already in the community and are working to support people. They will continue to feed their community but will have the resources to do so effectively. Action Care and Food Fix will be directly responsible for distributing and

promoting sales in their area.

You’re launching the project in Coffs arbour rst what does it mean to start this initiative in your own community?

It’s especially meaningful because it allows me to begin in my own community; a place where I deeply understand the needs, the gaps, and the potential for real impact. I’ve seen firsthand how much this initiative is needed here, and I know our community will genuinely get behind it. Starting locally means I can draw on existing relationships, local knowledge, and community support to create something that is not only effective but truly connected to the people it’s designed to help. It’s an opportunity to make a difference right where I live, and to show what is possible when a community comes together around a shared need. very dollar o ro t goes straight back into local food charities. Why was the 100% give back model non-negotiable? his was non negotiable because it re ects the whole purpose behind Just 1. I wanted this project to genuinely foster community spirit where every single purchase directly helps someone in our own community who is doing it tough y buying one cookie you re making an immediate difference to a local person in need. Keeping the model at 100% also shows that Just 1 is fully committed to funding local

You’re personally funding all the setup, marketing and packaging yourself. What made you decide to take that on?

I chose to personally fund all the setup, marketing, and packaging because I wanted to make sure it started the right way. Taking it on myself allowed me to set things up gradually, refine the conce t and build a strong foundation without rushing or compromising the vision. It was important to me that the community could see that I’m fully invested both emotionally and financially in making this initiative work. Covering the early costs also means that from day one every dollar of rofit can go straight back into local charities, which is e actly what ust is all about y taking on this responsibility myself, I’m showing my commitment to the project and ensuring it grows in a meaningful and community focused way.

Bellingen has always had a strong yoga and wellness culture. Holistic, progressive health is “on brand” for Bello, so bringing a boutique hot yoga studio here felt natural. Summer also makes it easy to heat the studio, and locals are pretty heat-tolerant even if they’ve never tried hot yoga!

The response has been incredibly positive.

I’m proud of the space I’ve created with my builders and tradesmen, and it’s been exciting to see locals embrace the studio with curiosity and support. Bellingen was clearly the right place for this concept.

The studio itself is beautiful. How important was it for you to create an environment that feels both calming and uplifting?

Creating a homely, calming space was essential.

In a small, open-plan studio, this helps the nervous system settle the moment you walk in.

Hot yoga naturally challenges you to stay calm under stress, a form of positive stress training, so the environment needs to balance that intensity. I wanted the space to feel relaxed, safe and clean so everyone could find their own sense of ease.

What can new clients expect when they walk through the door of Hot Bello for the very rst time?

You’ll be greeted by friendly staff and shown around the studio ur teachers are certified and experienced, and we check in on injuries or experience level to guide you safely. Depending on the class, expect some heat: Bikram Yoga is around 38–40°C, other classes 28–30°C.

You’ll break a sweat but feel supported and encouraged the whole time.

Who do you feel Hot Bello is ready for? Seasoned yogis, complete beginners, or everyone in between?

I’m proud of the space I’ve created with my builders and tradesmen, it’s been exciting to see locals embrace the studio with curiosity and support. Bellingen was clearly the right place for this concept.

“He crawled into my lap like he chose me”

was deep in addiction. Drugs, alcohol - it had taken everything. I was living in a one-man pop-up tent that wasn’t even waterproof. When it rained, the fear was overwhelming. You don’t know anxiety until you’re lying in a soaked sleeping bag, trying to keep your dog dry, wondering if you’ll make it through the night. That tent was my home - and my dog, Kruize, was my only constant.

I lost my family. My friends. I was surrounded by people who were just as broken as I was, doing all the wrong things. I had nothing left.

But Kruise… Kruise stayed by my side. He didn’t care if we were sleeping under a tree or in a car. To him, home was wherever I was.

I remember the day he chose me. I was delivering a litter of puppies for a mate.

Kruize was the runt that no one wanted. He crawled out of the laundry basket, over the centre console, and into my lap. That was it.

He picked me, and I’ve never forgotten that moment. It was like God sent him to me. Like he knew needed saving And I did. I had to completely destroy myself before I could rebuild. I had to hit rock bottom, it was long, painful, and necessary.

Recovery wasn’t easy. It took years. But Kruise was there through all of it. He gave me comfort, and a reason to keep going. I wanted to be better, not just for me, but for him.

Did you know the Women’s Health Centre turns 40 this year?

This year marks a remarkable milestone for the Coffs Harbour Women’s Health Centre as we celebrate 40 years of caring, supporting, and advocating for women’s health and wellbeing. What began in 1986 as a small, two-room service on Park Beach Road has grown into a cornerstone of health and community connection on the Mid North Coast.

B

orn from the passion and determination of local women campaigning for better health, safety, and reproductive services, the Centre was founded during a period of powerful grassroots activism. Within hours of opening, appointments were booked out for three months — a clear sign of both community need and community trust.

The Centre’s early decades were rich with community programs such as Tai Chi, meditation, relaxation classes and a much-loved carers’ program — all reinforcing its longstanding commitment to nurturing women’s physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Our feminist philosophy anchored in fairness, social justice and equality, has guided our belief that women deserve access to informed choices, respectful care, and a health service built by women, for women.

Four decades later, the Centre operated by regional based,

values led charity Health Voyage continues to uphold its founding values of equity, access, dignity, and compassion, delivering vital services including women’s health GP care, counselling, nursing, sexual and reproductive health, group programs, outreach services and specialist clinics such as the Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain Service.

We look forward to sharing our 40-year celebration throughout the year with our community and our service partners so keep an eye on our socials for updates and opportunities to get involved.

As we celebrate this significant anniversary, we honour the generations of women, who built, who run, and who continue to rely on this vital care. osh, can you tell us a little about Chapman Support ervices and how it rst began?

What inspired you to start the business? My introduction to support work started in the United

States through a summer camp program where I was a team leader. What began as a short experience turned into a six-month working holiday and it shaped the way I see care, inclusion, and what people can achieve with the right support. When I returned to Australia, 88 COFFS COAST focus

my partner Steph and I ran an SOS Phone Repairs franchise in Lismore, but we moved back to Coffs Harbour in August 2021 to be closer to family. I started casual support work locally in September 2021 and quickly realised this was where I was meant to be. n ebruary the oods severely im acted our Lismore shop. After doing everything we could to rebuild we made the difficult decision to sell the business. That was the turning point.

Rather than start over elsewhere, we chose to invest back into the Coffs Coast community

and launched Chapman Support Services in June 2022.

You specialise in support for people with higher and more com le needs What does that look like in practice, and how does your team approach this kind of care di erently? For us, complex support means being calm, consistent, and safety-focused. It can include personal care, manual handling, mealtime and feeding supports, epilepsy awareness, behaviour support, and supporting clients who communicate differently. We

That includes working with allied health, support coordinators, and, most importantly, families so they have real input and feel in control.

What qualities do you look for in your support workers, and how do you build a team culture that feels safe, respectful and empowering for clients? We can train

skills but we look for character first: calmness respect, reliability, accountability, and genuine care. With complex supports, we often hire people with home-care experience and then build strong client s ecific training on to How important is local connection to the way you operate, and in what ways do you work with other providers, allied health professionals or community organisations on the Coffs Coast? It’s huge. We work alongside local providers like NeuroABLE and Coffs Coast Speech Pathology (Health on High), plus OTs and planners.

Good collaboration means shared goals, clear communication, and consistency.

What are some common misconceptions people have about disability support or complex care, and what would you like to see change in the industry? A common misconception is that the NDIS only supports people with physical disabilities. In reality, it also provides essential funding for people with psychological, intellectual, neurological, and sensory disabilities, many of which are less visible but just as complex. I’d like to see greater public understanding of hidden and lifelong disabilities and a system that better explains and supports the diverse needs of participants and their families.

Looking ahead, what plans or goals do you have for Chapman Support Services in 2026 and beyond? Now that we’re registered, we’re growing our high-complex care team and e loring our first o ortunity while continuing in-home supports. We’re also building our mental health supports through community access and capacity building.

TIME FOR BIG SCHOOL – SCHOOL READINESS - WHAT IS IT?

chool readiness” refers to the collection of skills, knowledge, and behaviours that help a child engage successfully in school.

It is not about pushing formal learning earlier, but about supporting the whole child - their physical development, social and emotional wellbeing, communication, and early cognitive skills.

Having our youngest students ready for kindergarten hel s them settle in from the first day of school.

Modelling friendly behaviours and showing their importance reinforces key social skills such as listening quietly, taking turns, following instructions, cooperating and playing with others, expressing needs and emotions, and managing change. Preschool, play dates, social stories, and simple games all help build independence, curiosity, and confidence in learning Physical Readiness Excitement about school uniforms and bags offers a chance to practise before school starts. Children can show off their uniform to family, try on their hat, and carry their bag to build familiarity. Fun games that involve running, climbing, jumping, and throwing across different playgrounds help develop confidence and su ort active lay Building expectations for your school’s

ver two hours a day, or 14.4 hours a week. That is how long Australian teenagers are reported to spend on social media platforms, according to the Australian eSafety

Commissioner.

The internet, and social media in particular, has layed an increasingly significant role in the social and emotional lives of Australian teenagers. From Snapchat streaks to TikTok trends, ‘get ready with me’ reels, and group chats on Messenger, for many young people, it’s as much a part of daily life as doing homework or watching TV.

A national survey on children and social media

by the eSafety Commissioner revealed that most 8 to 12-year-old children in Australia have used social media or messaging services, despite being under the age limit. So how will this new law be enforced?

“The government released its Age Assurance Technology Trial Final Report in August 2025. he key findings of this re ort were that age assurance can be done effectively in Australia and that there are a range of possible a roaches to this but no one si e fits all solution. Hence, the social media platforms are likely to use a range of different approaches, which include requiring holders of social media accounts to rovide identification documents biometric age verification and arental control The approach taken is likely to vary between different platforms,” Ms Holt said.

While the new law may encourage face-to-face over digital interactions, for those affected by the ban, it may leave others feeling isolated or disconnected.

“We have to understand that this generation of children have grown up as digital natives and a lot of their social engagement and sense

of community actually comes from the online world,” Ms Holt said.

Educators often report that students struggle with concentration and productivity due to excessive social media use. The ban could potentially improve focus and academic outcomes

“Social media can really pull in two different directions for children.

There are the very wellestablished harms, but it's also quite important in helping marginalised children find their eo le For example, children who are neurodiverse, children who are struggling with their mental health or their sexuality, or from a particular ethnic background it can really hel them find other kids in the same situation and to connect.

It can also help regional and rural kids who might not have the same access to community.”

The ban will also restrict their ability to mobilise politically. A great example of this is Greta Thunberg and her powerful Student Strike for Climate that went global via social media in 2019 when she was only 15 years old.

According to Southern Cross University Professor of Counselling, Ebi Cocodia, social media is a primary source of news and information for many young people.

“The ban may lead them to seek information from less reliable or potentially harmful underground platforms,” Professor Cocodia said.

She says it can also lead to increased feelings of social isolation.

“For young individuals who struggle with in-person social interactions, social media serves as a crucial means of connection. The ban could exacerbate feelings of loneliness

and exclusion.”

Professor Cocodia says the social media ban could also lead to positive outcomes, including a reduction in cyberbullying, increased physical activities and outdoor engagement, strengthened social skills and face-toface relationships and improved academic performance.

“Educators often report that students struggle with concentration and productivity due to excessive social media use. The ban could potentially improve focus and academic outcomes,” she said.

“Restricting social media use may also contribute to improved sleep patterns, reduced anxiety, and lower rates of depression among young people.”

A more effective approach than an outright ban might involve implementing measures to ensure young people’s safety while allowing them to engage with social media in a safe manner.

“Government regulations should hold social media platforms accountable for safeguarding young people, while parental guidance and digital literacy programs can equip youth with the skills needed to navigate social media responsibly,” Professor Cocodia said.

“Social media use is deeply ingrained in contemporary society, and rather than prohibiting access, efforts should focus on protecting younger users from commercial exploitation and harmful online experiences.”

Law Honours student Jayne Phillips takes the argument further, arguing that greater regulation of social media platforms is required to protect both adults and children from harm.

“In fact, greater regulation is necessary to protect our system of representative democracy itself,” Ms Phillips said.

Here, visitors learn about these shy marsupials while viewing some of the resident koalas.

They’ll also meet the carers who rehabilitate sick and injured koalas brought in for treatment.

For those seeking a more active experience, Wildnets Adventure Park offers Australia’s largest suspended playground. With rope- and net-based adventures scaled safely for the ages 3 and up, you can compete challenges, play in the treetops or ride a zipline.

This document still guides Guulabaa’s management today.

Guulabaa is grounded in deep collaboration with First Nations communities, from integrating traditional cool burning practices to reduce bushfire risk and restore forest health, to sharing of culture and language.

This approach also enabled the use of local sustainably sourced native hardwoods in construction, with the support of the North Coast timber industry. Guulabaa sets a benchmark for ecologically responsible and culturally informed design with Caring for Country in mind.

THE FUTURE IS ‘GUULABAA’ uulabaa serves as a agshi model for forest based conservation infrastructure in Australia. hat is the most common mistake people make when caring for reptiles?

Refreshed tax guidance released on short-term rental income and deductions

he ATO has released Draft Taxation Ruling TR 2025/D1 clarifying how individuals who are not in business should treat income and deductions from rental properties, including holiday homes and short-term rentals.

Draft Practical Compliance Guideline PCG 2025/D6 outlines the fair and reasonable apportionment of losses and outgoings relating to a property used for both income-producing and personal purposes.

PCG 2025/D7 explains the ATO’s proposed compliance approach to determining whether an individual’s holiday home is used (or held for use) mainly to produce assessable income.

Holiday homes As per Draft Taxation Ruling TR 2025/D1, if the rental property is also a holiday home, certain deductions for costs related to owning or using it will be denied because it is considered a leisure facility, unless an exception applies (S 26-50(1)).

Whether a property is a holiday home depends on its actual pattern of use for holidays or recreation, including by family or friends, even when unoccupied. Deductions cannot be claimed for expenses related to ownership or personal use, including (but not limited to): nterest on borrowings to finance the ro erty Council rates

Who is your greatest influence in business?

I dont know that I have one, but I think that a lot of my inspiration comes from building a legacy for my children. I grew up living in a busy house with only one working parent and times were incredibly tough, we went without a lot. I don't want that for my two babies. So I've gone all in, I give my all in every aspect. ve ust finished a ni Degree in Nursing and they were my driving force for that too.

What does a typical day on site look like for you at the moment, from toolbox talks through to handover stages? For myself, it’s a bit of a hybrid role. I’ll do invoicing and paperwork early in the morning and after that, I’ll go to site. I still like to be on the tools for a few hours each day if possible. This handson approach means I can see most problems before they happen. The remainder of the day will be made up of meetings with clients, trades and suppliers Clients often say building can be stressful.

How do you and your team support them through the process and keep communication clear? We have regular site meetings with our clients so they stay informed on progress and have a clear understanding of what is happening now and into the future with the build. There are a lot of decisions the clients need to make when building their home. We try to give them plenty of time to make these decisions so they don’t feel rushed.

With a balanced combination of lifestyle appeal, regional migration, development & infrastructure projects and growing confidence from both buyers and renters, the latest data provides a clear snapshot of how land, houses and units have performed during 2025 and where the opportunities lie ahead.

Property Sales Market Trends After a period of market softening in 2023, the housing sector in Coffs Harbour has delivered a solid rebound. The median house value hit $807,543 in November 2025, an increase of $22,336 (2.9%) since the end of 2024. Over the most recent 12-month period, 362 houses were sold. Of note is the substantial 51% increase in median house prices in the 5 years from 2020!

Days on the market have eased significantly to 48.5 days as of September 2025, down from 62 days a year earlier, showing that properties are moving more quickly as demand strengthens.

New listings have remained steady, with 348 new house listings in the last 12 months.

The strongest activity occurred in the $600,000 - $800,000 price range with 138 sales in Coffs and 300 sales for the LGA. In the $800,000 $1M price range there were 110 sales in Coffs 118 COFFS COAST focus

and 334 for the LGA. Of note in the $1m $1.1m price range there were 61 sales in Coffs and a whopping 333 for the LGA! There were 30 sales over $2m in the LGA!

The rental market remains a key driver of overall
