from the Welcome to the SEPTEMBER EDITION.

his month we celebrate our 10th year of publishing Coffs Coast FOCUS, making us one of the leading publications in the region. With over 116 editions, we have never been more connected to our readers. It’s a nice time for us to reflect on the past 10 years and how it has shaped the Coffs community by giving local people a platform to share their stories. We are often asked how we plan on competing with the digital space, but nothing beats grabbing a cuppa, sitting on the sofa and turning our beautiful glossy pages … reading about the weird and wonderful people that make Coffs Harbour the best place in the world. To the many business owners who have chosen FOCUS as their marketing solution and advertised with us for the last 10 years, the people that make FOCUS possible … thank you! M I C H A E L C R O S S L A N D Michael Crossland's motivational speaking had taken off over the past few years. Unfortunately, with a blink of an eye, that all changed. The recent lockdown gave Michael the opportunity to spend quality time at home focusing on the things that matter most, even finding time to write his second book, "Everything will be OK".

H

ey Michael. We last caught up over three years ago. What have you been up to since? How time flies and how the landscape around the world has changed. Three years ago we announced that we were having a baby in February 2018, but as you all know, life doesn’t always go according to plan. Our little baby boy arrived on the 12th December, nine weeks early, very unwell. After four weeks in ICU at The Royal Hospital in Randwick, we were told by the doctor that they believed he had contracted a horrible illness called sepsis, a blood disease which could possibly kill him. I remember praying out loud, saying, "Take my house, take my car, take everything I’ve ever worked for, but please don’t take my little boy". After two months of fighting, we were finally allowed to head home. It was the first time in my life I had walked a day in my mum's shoes. He is now a healthy, beautiful little boy, and we are so grateful for what he has already taught us in such a short period of time and for the joy he’s brought into our lives. My speaking world has gone crazy. Last year I was on 180 flights, speaking across 22 countries, getting a chance to share the stage with the likes of the Dalai Lama and Sir Richard Branson. Standing on stage at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in front of a sold out arena is something I will never forget, and featuring on many different TV shows, including Ridiculousness on MTV in the USA, Ifish on Channel Ten, broadcasting on Fox Sports and many other programs, getting an opportunity to share some

Understanding my 'why' has been a key component in being able to keep getting back up time and time again, when the voices in my head tell me to just stay down.

And this book was all put together during lockdown! How did the restrictions, not only nationally but internationally, impact you? My entire year has been cancelled. Receiving a call in March by my agent, telling me that my calendar for the year had been completely emptied was a very tough phone call to receive. Also, hearing that my tour as the closing speaker for Tony Robbins was cancelled was very disappointing. With a very weak immune system, I do not have the freedom that so many take for granted. There are no trips to the shopping mall or hanging out with groups of friends, as the risk is just far too great. But for me, it was a really incredible moment in my life to be able to stop, prioritise what was truly important and spend some quality time with my beautiful wife and gorgeous son. I also had a chance to really 14 COFFS COAST

invest in my mental state of mind, filling it with the knowledge that was going to empower me to stay optimistic and resilient through these turbulent times - and for that, I’m extremely grateful. I have begun to realise that we learn in the light what we so desperately need in the dark. To be able to recall those lessons now when my mind starts to dip and I walk in the victim path, I feel as though I am equipped with the tools I need to get back on my feet. Understanding my "why" has been a key component in being able to keep getting back up time and time again, when the voices in my head tell me to just stay down. I know that everyone reading this, everyone on this planet, we all have a story, we all have pain and suffering -but it is not our pain and suffering that is so different; it is our solutions. I was taught as a very young little boy that it is not our adversities that define us; it is how

we deal with them. When we begin to master our mindset, I think that’s when we begin to master life itself. Another congratulations! You've also just announced that baby number two is on its way! It has been a rough road to be blessed with baby number one, but now to be pregnant with baby number two, we cannot begin to tell you how excited we are. To know that our little boy is going to have a brother or sister early next year brings so much joy and happiness to our lives ... Not so much joy and happiness for our son, Lachy, as we constantly try to get him to kiss Mummy’s tummy, where the new baby is, and his response is always,“No way!" I know having one little boy who is full of energy is a handful and adding to it with a new addition will be crazy, but I think with patience, persistence and perspective we will be able to show our kids they are loved. What legacy do you hope to leave

I want to know that because of the way I lived my life, people continued to push through the coolness of their shadows, so they could have the opportunity to enjoy the warmth of the sunshine!

behind? I feel right now that it’s really important for me to not only leave a legacy, but also to live into my legacy. I want my kids to know that I may not be around for the rest of their lives, but I will certainly love them for the rest of mine. I want to be that kind, compassionate and caring husband that my amazing wife truly deserves. I want to be a person who inspires people to never give up, regardless of what challenges they get thrown - to be the hope for those who are hopeless and to give strength to those who are weak. I want to know that because of the way I lived my life, people continued to push through the coolness of their shadows, so they could have the opportunity to enjoy the warmth of the sunshine! This year has given us all many ups and downs, to say the least. If you could give a few words of hope and optimism to

our readers, what would they be? I think right now it is critical that we as human beings see that this is an opportunity for humanity to reset and begin to prioritise what is truly important in life. We must get out of bed each day and challenge ourselves to do something that our future self will be proud of. We need to remember that through great darkness, these are our discovery moments. We do not discover how unfair our life is, but rather we discover how powerful we have been created. Whether you have been dealt crappy cards or not, whilst you are being dealt cards that means you are still in the game, and when you are still in the game, it’s about how you choose to play those cards. They will ultimately determine the quality of your life. Thanks Michael. COFFS COAST

WAVE E BUBBLE BEYOND TH

With technology literally in the palm of our hands, filmmaking has never been more accessible. From its humble beginnings, Coffs Coast Nextwave expanded to what is today - the largest Youth Film program in Australia. David Horsley and Kate Howat offer youth in regional and remote areas the opportunity to gain the skills needed to make short films, while supporting their creativity.

H

i David. Nextwave started as a collaboration a few years back. Tell us about the Nextwave initiative? Kate and I started as a little local Coffs Harbour initiative with Gary Maher from headspace Coffs, to give local young people a reason to make their first short films, and to help break down the stigma around mental health - and it just kept growing. Six years later, it’s now the largest regional youth film program in Australia. Screenwave International Film Festival (SWIFF) was growing and Nextwave was growing, so we decided to merge Nextwave into SWIFF. It just made sense. The thing with filmmaking is that the technology is now here, in the palm of everyone's hands, and Nextwave shows young people all across Australia how to use it. You have Beyond the Bubble and the Nextwave short film comp currently underway. Tell us about these. Beyond the Bubble is a joint initiative between SWIFF and Coffs Harbour City Council, to hear from young people in the Coffs community and find out what their vision of a brighter future is beyond the bubble of COVID. Anyone who lives in Coffs LGA aged between ten - 25 years can enter. All they need to do is make a film under one minute using their smart phone in portrait mode and include the phrase "What’s Next?" in their film. It’s pretty easy, and you can win a new 128GB iPad! The main Nextwave Short Film Comp is

16 COFFS COAST

an Australia-wide search for the next young regional Australians filmmakers. Films have to be under five minutes, and also include the phrase “What’s Next?”. Filmmakers in Coffs Harbour can enter both competitions with the same film. There are tens of thousands of dollars in awards and prizes up for grabs, including a brand new PlayStation 5! Both competitions close on September 21st. More details at www.nextwavefilm.com.au What makes a good short film submission? Short, sharp, and punchy. Something personal. A good story is better than a fancy camera every time. Be bold, put yourself out there, and get creative. How have recent restrictions impacted Nextwave? Before COVID-19, we had Nextwave filmmaking workshops lined up in 70 regional schools across NSW. Then we went from a full schedule to zero paying projects overnight. We took a step back and figured out how to turn pandemic lemons into lemonade; what would it take to bring Nextwave to all young regional Australians, not just those we could physically travel to? That’s how Nextwave Online was founded, and three months later we now have schools in every Australian state and territory signed up and learning filmmaking. The service is available remotely for all students and teachers to host in classrooms or from home, year-round and at their own pace with an emphasis on making film learning fun, easy and accessible.

You’ve partnered with Southern Cross University to bring an online program to more youth. What’s covered in the program? SWIFF have partnered with Southern Cross University with "Film For the Future", a new initiative that offers select regional Australian schools fully-subsidised access to the new Nextwave Online national film education program. The main aim is to equip young people in remote, rural and regional areas with the tools to make a great film and show the important link between creativity and mental health. We want to give regional kids the same opportunities; it’s about film skills for jobs, creativity, making friends, and mental health. Share some examples of how Nextwave has helped our regional youth in the past. The main success isn’t necessarily what’s on screen; it’s the anecdotes we hear from parents or teachers, telling us about what making films has meant to people giving it a try for the first time. Six young Nextwave filmmakers have come up through the ranks and are now studying at university to become career filmmakers. Proud as punch. For those who want to learn more about filmmaking, what advice would you give them? For people in primary school or high school, head to www.nextwavefilm.com.au and register your interest to learn filmmaking with Nextwave Online. For students leaving high school or in the 18 - 25 age group, check out Southern Cross University’s film programs.

Evie McClelland grew up here on the Coffs Coast and found herself being offered modelling work time and time again, so she gave it a shot - and things took off for her from there.

S

he is now based on the Gold Coast, has built an impressive portfolio of work and is modelling as her fulltime job. Hey Evie. When you first started modelling here on the Coffs Coast, did you think it would become something as serious as it has? Gosh no! When I originally started in Coffs Harbour, I was actually more interested in acting and photography, as they were both senior subjects of mine and hobbies I loved doing (oh, and swimming at the Promised Lands every weekend was a top priority back then also ha ha). I was shooting occasionally and still enjoyed the creative side of things and the people it surrounded me with! But I never thought in a million years it would lead me to the opportunities where I am today or become my full-time job! I still pinch myself a little every day! When did you first start taking it more seriously? My nan and mum would always encourage me with modelling, and when I was 17 I entered a modelling contest in a Gold Coast Shopping Mall, in which I placed third! From here, I was kinda like, OK - this is pretty cool! The agency of the competition then lined me up for my first magazine shoot, and this is

18 COFFS COAST

focus

where I just fell in love! At the time I was still living in Coffs Harbour, so began taking my social media platforms more seriously, working on them, organising test shoots and driving up to the Gold Coast when needed. It was a lot of hard work, but I’m so glad I stuck to it! What do you enjoy most about the industry? Everything! The people you meet are just simply amazing! Creatives motivate me daily. Everyone in this industry is really just having a go, which is so amazing to see. They are people

who have a concept/idea, and they believe in themselves enough to execute it! Whether it be starting a brand, creating an editorial, doing a crazy makeup look, experimenting with new lighting, it's always just trial and error - learning and trying without the fear of failure! Plus, everyone is so supportive of one another! What would a typical day in front of the camera look like for you? This is probably where the glamour of being a model gets removed ha ha!

A typical day for me is usually getting up before 6am to start, whether it be driving to location, makeup call time, sunrise shoot, doing my own makeup etc. But, generally you're always needed before 6 or 7am lol; lucky I’m an early riser! Before a day in front of the camera, the night before I ensure I’ve done my routine for skin and hair prep! Mornings, I always start with a coffee - der! I then drive to wherever the shoot location is. I love hair and makeup, because I get to sit and relax for one or two hours and just talk to everyone! However, if the shoot is a commercial, I use this time to go over the call sheet, lines and running plan. During this time, photographers set up and test lighting, the brands go over the call sheet and plans for the day, stylists get their racks ready and pretty much once makeup is done, it's shoot time ... Which means lots of posing, getting creative, and remembering what you’re showcasing (for example; if it's hair, accentuating and drawing focus to the hair using your movement). The biggest thing really is, just keep moving! There will always be

I couldn’t model for over six months, and I was ready to quit. But then, I got accepted into Miss Universe Australia, where I met some seriously amazing people, and my love for the industry was re-sparked!

multiple outfit changes, but you get pretty quick at getting changed! Generally the team will have a little run over the photos/videos, to ensure they got the shot, then that’s a wrap! After shoots, I always go for a beach walk just to move my body, clear my head and get outdoors. Then, I'm ready for the next day; I love it ! What was your most transformative shoot thus far and why? It would have to be my first shoot after my recovery from an incident I had overseas. I was actually in Turkey for modelling, where I got bitten by a mosquito, which left me hospitalised. Unfortunately, I was unable to continue working, so from there I was then flown home to Coffs Harbour, where my beautiful mumma took care of me. I couldn’t model for over six months, and I was ready to quit. But then, I got accepted into Miss

Universe Australia, where I met some seriously amazing people and my love for the industry was re-sparked! I guess you could say, it made me believe in myself again ... So after a long road of recovery and a substantial amount of time off, I competed in Miss Universe and had my first shoot in forever - and here we are! I haven’t looked back since. What advice would you give others who may be wanting to follow a career in modelling? Just go for it! You only ever regret the things you didn’t do, so take the leap and try something new. On top of that, just start doing simple test shoots to build a portfolio, use your social media platforms as a business tool and work hard! And, always stay positive and remember you’re beautiful. Where can we see more of your work? You can find me on my Instagram @ eviemareee. For my portfolio and professional images, head to www.eviemareee.com Thanks Evie. COFFS COAST

IS IT TIME TO

FUTURE?

2020 has redefined how we live, prompting many people to reconsider what’s really important. While we all have different dreams and aspirations, there are a few values we all have in common - that’s the importance of community, finances and lifestyle.

D

ownsizing from a large home presents a range of new opportunities; it’s a chance to create the lifestyle you’ve always dreamed of, by freeing up both your capital and your time. Naturally, some people feel daunted by the prospect of downsizing. However, for most people who make the change, their only regret is they did not do it sooner. The key motivations for moving from the family home are usually linked life stage, finding a new home that fits in with current and future lifestyle needs. These needs can relate to the size and ongoing maintenance of the home, establishing new community connections, unlocking equity in the family home or relocating to a preferred location. For many homeowners, downsizing is the first chapter to a new life but when contemplating your future, it’s important to look at the available options first. LIVING WITH FAMILY OR IN A GRANNY FLAT Living with family or in a small flat on family property many decide is the best cost saving option. However, those looking for more independence may decide this option not as desirable. RENTING A HOUSE Private rental delivers a certain amount of flexible options. However, renting can have a number of negatives to consider, such as short lease agreements and security of tenure. APARTMENT LIVING Apartment living may be a good option, with

locations in inner city districts, walking distance to amenities and entertainment precincts. Ensure allowances are made for the high body corporate fees. HOUSE AND LAND PACKAGE Brand new house and land packages are a popular choice, with modern homes in brand new suburbs. New housing estates are generally geared for medium to large sized blocks of land and floor plans, defeating the downsizing objective. RETIREMENT VILLAGES On the surface, people find it difficult to compare the affordability of different villages with their complex or different legal and financial arrangements. While no two retirement villages are ever the same, there are major differences, and it can be confusing to navigate. OVER 5OS LIFESTYLE COMMUNITIES/ LAND LEASE COMMUNITIES Australia’s over 50s lifestyle communities, or land lease communities, are emerging as a strong sector, setting new benchmarks for affordable accommodation. High quality, modern homes are set within a master planned community, featuring resortstyle facilities - including gold class clubhouse facilities, swimming pools and bowls greens - in a secure, gated community-focused complex. The popularity of the model is its simplicity! The resident pays for the house and owns it, and they rent the land. This ensures a much more affordable entry price point and eliminates the need for residents to pay stamp duty.

Residents may also be entitled to claim rent assistance through their age pension. Some lifestyle living providers - such as Ingenia Lifestyle - do not charge entry fees or exit fees, meaning the owner retains all capital gains. Jack Dixon has an accounting business here on the Coffs Coast, and his newwave take on accounting and what he can achieve in this role is one of the things that is setting him apart. He is a surfing, outdoorsy, young family man and may not fit the “typical” stereotype accountant look, but don’t let the long hair fool you! This guy knows his stuff.

H

ey Jack. Living in quite a few places around the world, what led you to settle here on the Coffs Coast? Honestly, this place just felt like home almost immediately. I have a young family and we’ve always been outdoorsy types; the Coffs Coast seems to be full of people like us, and it’s not surprising that it’s been a good fit. We live north of town and I can never quite tell if I’m living in a sleepy little surf village or someplace super vibrant. It’s a beautiful mix. Also, the diversity of this place is amazing ... The ocean, the mountains, there’s a solid rotation of festivals and markets throughout the year, good bands come through town. In terms of outdoor activities, you can do everything here. I like to surf, but we used to rock climb before we had our daughter, and a fortnight ago we were out at Glenreagh with friends doing some climbing again. Downhill MTB has been on the to-do list for ages, and there’s a scene here to explore when the little one’s a bit older. We are absolutely aware of how fortunate we are to be living here - this place is paradise! Some of your time overseas time was spent in Montreal, Canada, where you met your wife. Unfortunately, a lot of people still have this perception of their accountant as being an expense they have to pay for once a year, without really even knowing what they’re paying for or why. The thing is, the role of accountants is changing, largely driven by technology, and it’s freeing us up to play much more of a “business partner” role, working with businesses to make smart, up-to-date decisions on the go. We’ll still do tax returns but - if you wish - we’re also able to contribute a whole lot more. In light of the above, I want the business to do the basic things well. The first is to keep abreast of technology that can make life easier on either my side of the desk or for my clients. Secondly, to strive to communicate in terms that my clients understand. Good advice isn’t all that useful if it isn’t clearly understood. Finally, I’d say I just try to be a real person. Be genuine and take an interest beyond the working relationship. Minecraft

Following eleven individuals with Autism on their quest to find "the one", Love on the Spectrum is undoubtedly the most heart-warming addition to Netflix's recent flurry of dating shows - though the Autistic community have varied thoughts on it. Love on the Spectrum is built like a typical dating show: we meet the 11 daters, and their friends and families, and follow them in various dating scenarios (speed dating, blind dates, etc.).

The game involves players creating and destroying various types of blocks in a three dimensional environment. The player takes an avatar that can destroy or create blocks, forming fantastic structures, creations and artwork across the various multiplayer servers in multiple game modes. Minecraft can be a real blast when played solo, but it's often a lot more fun when you've got friends messing around in the world alongside you. Minecraft can actually be good for kids too. Minecraft encourages kids to be creative and imaginative. Minecraft gives kids creative freedom similar to the way building with Lego does. It also teaches patience and perseverance. There is no instant gratification in the game. They have to work at getting what they want, and it takes time. When playing Minecraft they have to use their memory, planning, organisational and problem solving skills. Minecraft is also free of any graphic violence or anything scary. Sure, you have some monsters - but they are blocky monsters.

The Chicks Gaslighter As usual, The Chicks did not disappoint with Gaslighter! I have always loved them for not being too predictable, with each of their albums being different from each other! Not many artists are "brave" enough to take that risk of going a different direction with each of their albums. The strong vocals, coupled with their famed two-part harmonies and excellent musicianship are very much still a major part of the trio and are the bonuses of this album. In short, it is a masterpiece!

i Tiga. Please introduce yourself and share your connection to the Coffs Coast. My name is Tiga, and I’m the head trainer in the Marine Mammal Operations department at Dolphin Marine Conservation Park. I’ve lived in Coffs Harbour since I was three years old and have always wanted to work with animals. I still live locally, and I enjoy the outdoor lifestyle of the Coffs Coast. year anniversary of my career at the park. What an amazing role you have here at the park. How did you start work in the industry? Everyone’s story is unique when it comes to getting a job in this industry. Some people go to university and study Marine Biology or Zoology, while others study at TAFE in Animal Studies, Vet Nursing or Captive Animals. It is also important to have hands-on practical experience. One way to gain animal experience is through volunteering at a zoological facility like DMCP.

Other experience, such as voluntary rescue work through WIRES (Wildlife Information and Rescue Education Services) and ORRCA (Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia) is a fantastic way to gain additional practical experience. I did some volunteer work at a local veterinary practice, however, soon realised I preferred the more exotic species to domestic or farm animals. I applied for a volunteer position at DMCP and worked one day a week for over a year. In 2011, I accepted a

18 months later she was rescued again, with over 15 kg of fishing line and rubbish wrapped around her, which caused so many injuries to her body and damage to her fluke that she was unable to be released.

Our dolphins are descended from rescued animals - including Calamity. Calamity came to us because of entanglement in discarded fishing line. She was cut free and released, as our main priority has always been rescue and rehabilitation of marine life. However, 18 months later she was rescued again with over 15 kg of fishing line and rubbish wrapped around her, which caused so many injuries to her body and damage to her fluke that she was unable to be released. Our sea lion family includes Adelaide, who was rescued as an orphaned pup on the South Coast of Australia. She was homed here with us due to our extensive knowledge of this species. The other sea lions are descendants of previously rescued animals. What’s involved in the daily care and training of these beautiful animals? Our day begins very fishy at 7am, with hand-sorting 100 kg of fish for the animals’ personalised and nutritionally balanced diets. Other morning tasks include water tests, sweeping pools and ensuring each enclosure is meticulously cleaned (this involves the glamorous job of picking up faecal debris - a.k.a. POOP!) And that is all before 9am! Usually, the rest of the day involves meeting and educating guests about marine conservation and animal biology in our daily presentations and interactions with all the animals. Here at DMCP, all of the trainers have developed very strong, trusting relationships 28 COFFS COAST

with the animals. These close relationships allow us to provide a very high level of welfare to the animals. Through the use of operant conditioning and positive reinforcement, we are able to condition our animals to participate in their own healthcare, which is a critical aspect of the trainer/animal relationship and can only be achieved through trust. These important husbandry behaviours can include the collection of voluntary blood samples, ultrasounds, X-rays, dental hygiene and eye care. Are there any interesting dolphin facts that we may not be aware of? Did you know that dolphins are mammals, just like us! They share the same five characteristics of humans - they breathe air, are warm blooded, give birth to live young and nurse with milk ‌ and they have hair! Baby dolphins are born with moustaches! They have tiny whisker-like hairs on their

rostrums, which fall out after seven - 10 days. These hairs are remnants of their evolutionary past. The other thing people may not know is that the many different noises you hear dolphins make actually come through their blowholes - not their mouths, as many people believe! What do you love the most about your role? I love being able to spend my days actively involved in animal rehabilitation, education and marine conservation. I enjoy sharing my passion for animals, and I love inspiring people to take action for our wonderful marine life! Thanks Tiga. COFFS COAST

This month I decided to chat to Mel Fitzpatrick, who lives in Bellingen, is involved with Bent in Bello and is a DJ! I had to find out more …

el, what is Bent in Bello? Bent in Bello is a FB page we set up so that queer people in the Bellingen region could connect and find out about events and generally get information coming from various community groups. We knew there was a pretty solid queer community in Bellingen, so Bent in Bello was a bit of a portal to get everyone together. Me and a few others, Kyles, Mego, Pats, Rachel and Paul are involved in organising events like the Bello Homo Muster (a party we hold twice a year as a fundraiser for Bello Be Young and Proud), Queer Beers (monthly at the Fed) dinners and bushwalks, so it seemed like Bent In Bello was the best way to get information out. What is Extra Dirty ... and tell us about DJ Feisty! I’ve been a DJ and club promoter in Sydney for more than two decades. I’ve been able to continue DJing (as Feisty) and promoting in Sydney, even though I moved to Bello eight years ago. I’ve been lucky to play loads of big parties, including Mardi Gras, for most of my career. Extra Dirty is the name of my club event. It was a party that started small and was called Dirty (referring to the dirty techno sound we played) but then we went

Plant-based lifestyles are on the rise - and for good reason. Not only does Amy Barrett create visually appealing food that spiked our interest; it also gets the taste buds flowing. Amy tells us why her passion for healthy living opened the door to a career in holistic nutrition.

H

i Amy. Please introduce yourself and share your connection to the Coffs Coast. Hey, I’m Amy aka Chocdaisy. I’ve lived on the beautiful Coffs Coast for 12 years now. We are so pleased to live in such a stunning and diverse part of the world! I love that I get to meet new people on a daily basis at Raw Bar, which is one of the reasons I started the business just over 18 months ago. It is a way to connect with the community and share my love of great-tasting and top quality food. You create visually beautiful treats for your business, Chocdaisy. What was it that got you started in the food industry? Thanks very much! It has been quite a journey. I grew up with a great interest in food! As a kid, you’d find me beside my mother in the kitchen. One might say I was food-driven. After school, I studied floristry and began my Advanced Design in Floristry course. I worked in the flower industry for 20 years, and during that time my own health journey sparked a thirst for more knowledge on the human body and nutrition. I went on to complete a Diploma in Holistic Nutrition. All the while I still loved creating new dishes with whole plant-based food and have been

doing so for around 15 years. With cakes and chocolate being a favourite, I turned my hand to perfecting refined sugar-free, gluten-free, dairy and egg-free treats that had to look as good as they tasted! It's important now more than ever to eat and live well, but equally important not to feel guilty when having a sweet treat. Tell us what you have on offer. Exactly! People are really becoming aware of what they are fuelling their bodies with, and there is a real movement towards a plant-based lifestyle - which really excites me! The ethos we stand by is a wholefood plant-based approach to food; it needs to make you feel great, look good and taste even better. We offer nourish bowls, cheesecakes, a range of chocolate bars, picnic nourish boxes, and celebration cakes - all 100% gluten-free, vegan, refined sugar-free, and all our sweet treats are organic. What would be your best seller and why? Oh, that’s tough! It is transient, so I will give you the top five: Snickerz Bar; Twix Bar; Espresso + Vanilla Creme “Cheesecake”; Nourish Bowl; and Cake Pop. The Snickerz Bar is very, very close to the original, which I believe is what makes it so popular. It consists of a nougat base topped with dreamy caramel and roast peanuts, finished in our house-made organic raw

chocolate. What is it that you love most about your role? I guess the fact that I’ve created my dream job is pretty rad! I love so much about it, but I’d have to say the most rewarding part is seeing children’s faces light up when their parents say, “You can eat anything in here”! Raw Bar caters to so many different food intolerances and allergies, so when people seek us out and taste our food, they don’t feel like they are missing out. It fills us with joy! What are your passions outside of cooking? Recycling, upcycling and repurposing! My husband is amazed that I keep every jar we empty! Our planet is precious and if we all do our bit, it will collectively make an impact. I love being outdoors, gardening and spending time with my family. I also love researching different techniques and foods for my recipes, sharing nutrition tips, and creating plant-based video content with my friend for our YouTube channel, “Chocdaisy’s Rad Plant Living”. ART WALK

EMERGE LIKE A BUTTERFLY FROM A LONG, DARK, ISOLATED WINTER ... and come and experience an event like no other!

T

imes may be tough, but ArtWalk is Port Macquarie’s favourite event, and it will be going ahead (albeit in a different, more socially-distanced format). We need art and creativity in our lives now more than ever! It will still be edgy, delightful and surprising but instead of a one-night festival, you are invited to explore multiple locations across the Port MacquarieHastings region, over an entire week. We may not be able to meet in large gatherings or encourage getting up and close and personal, but that’s not going to stop ArtWalk from offering the perfect platform for celebrating the creativity that resides in this perfect piece of paradise. So, what will ArtWalk 2020 look like? ArtWalk is heading to the streets and into local businesses by encouraging artists to use shop front windows as their very own gallery for a week. Day or night, you will be able to

wander and enjoy all this region’s creatives have to offer. Event elements include: • Longest Footpath Art Gallery - artists located in businesses within the CBDs • Artist markets located within the CBDs • Public art installations in locations around the region • Glasshouse Window Banner Gallery • Satellite events, including exhibitions and workshops • The event program will be available online at www.artwalkpmq.com.au from midSeptember to help you plan. Plus, Port Macquarie in spring is a glorious thing (wonderful weather, whale-watching, walks and swims, hinterland delights, nature in full bloom, food and wine aplenty), and ArtWalk is perfectly timed for the October school holidays. We can’t think of a better way to spend our days than wandering around this beautiful region, getting creatively

inspired, sightseeing, eating and drinking … bliss! Visit www.portmacquarieinfo.com.au for places to stay, trip ideas, itineraries, places to eat and drink, galleries and museums to visit, and events to experience. And please … be COVIDsafe. If you’re feeling unwell, or you reside in (or have recently visited) a COVID hot spot, please stay home. When you attend ArtWalk, please abide by COVIDsafe health guidelines. Let’s keep the Mid North Coast healthy and happy!

LOOK GOOD FEEL GOOD

with CAROLE BEROS FROM LE DÃIN DESIGNS

MOVING INTO SPRING, LET’S HOPE WE ARE FINALLY MOVING TOWARDS BRIGHTER TIMES. It is going to take us a while to feel even semi normal again! In the meantime, I will try to steer you in the right direction.

T

his month I’m covering the topic of wearing colour and how it helps lift your mood! If you ask a child to select something to wear, you can guarantee they won’t choose black! As a stylist, I mainly wear black because I can showcase jewellery or layer with a coloured jacket, scarf or coat to demonstrate to my clients. Black or white is an ideal base to pop a colour on an outfit! So one option, if you must wear black, is to team it up with big, bold, colourful statement jewellery! Everyone can wear any colour; it just depends on what shade it is. For instance, if you have red hair like the model in this column, I wouldn’t put her in straight orange, but if you pair the apricot orange with this gorgeous shade of turquoise, cobalt blue or a regal purple, it looks sensational! Yellow and red however, would not be a choice I would suggest for redheads but pink, depending on your tone, works amazingly well, from the palest to hot pink. Moving on to how colour affects

42 COFFS COAST

your moo .... Pablo Picasso once remarked that colours had the ability to change your emotional state, and I do believe this works! Bearing in mind you wear the shade that suits your hair and skin, I think we all need to colour up to cheer up! Red is a colour that exudes power; it is charged with emotion and is an absolute standout! Wear it with confidence and strut your stuff! Yellow projects happiness and has a fun element to it. It reminds us of sunshine and gives us a burst of positivity. Green is a colour with many shade connotations; bright green looks fresh, whilst muted green gives you a relaxed feel. Blue conveys calmness when the shades are light, whilst dark blue gives and projects confidence. Whatever you choose to wear, fluro green or the palest of pink (which guys actually rock as well!) ... Let’s get out of the drab and dreary and cheer ourselves up with a burst of … colour! Model Lillian Sallie, Image ajcophotography

i Tom. Tell us about the initiative and the people behind it. The farmers behind North Arm Farms are Kaycee Simuong, Tom Macindoe, Camilla Bonicci, Bryce King, Alex Columbe and Kerryn McFarlane. We’re a motley (and given the age of the average Aussie farmer, pretty youthful) crew of mostly first generation farmers, with the exception of Bryce, who grew up on a wheat-sheep property in Western Australia. Kaycee and Tom both have environmental science backgrounds, Camilla was involved in ecotourism, Kerryn in bush regeneration, and Alex and Bryce both in carpentry and the arts. So, a pretty diverse bunch, but all of us have a love of good food, a passion for the environment and the selfsufficient lifestyle. FIRE recovery Black Summer ran from July 2019 to February 2020 in New South Wales, burning 5.37 million hectares. Forestry Corporation of NSW, managing more than 2 million hectares of NSW State Forests, is one of four firefighting agencies in the state - and it was a busy season for their firefighters.

D

uring the season its staff played a significant part in the bushfire response and were deployed for more than 250,000 hours in firefighting and incident management, while still managing the production of timber, safety of forest visitors and protection of the environment. At the end of the season, over half of the area of State Forest had been protected from fire, with 910,000 hectares impacted by fire. Forest Corporation has over a hundred years’ experience in fire management and maintains high levels of fire planning, preparedness and suppression capacity. Staff are trained to the highest standard and are available for deployment across the state. Outside of the fire season, the focus is on minimising fuel loads to reduce the intensity of wildfires through the implementation of prescribed burning and grazing. After responding to fire outbreaks across an enormous land mass over summer, Forestry Corporation then turned its mind to the recovery from these fires - the salvaging of fire-affected timber, repair of fire-damaged roads and bridges, and regeneration and regrowth of the forests for the future. This feature follows the story of forest firefighters and the recovery efforts underway in NSW.

uke Secombe, a forest technician based on the North Coast usually spends his days inspecting and marking up areas prior to harvest, looking for rare animals and plants, finding hollow bearing trees to protect and ensuring we protect waterways and other special areas. Over summer, Luke worked on fires starting in mid July, inland from Casino, and finishing mid February in Bombala. He worked as a crew leader in back burning operations and wildfire suppression; supervised heavy plant working on containment lines; and assessed and dealt with problem trees. Luke said the hardest part was comprehending the sheer scale of loss on every level. “Going to work each day and wondering if my own land and property were going to be there when I got back and sending my family and pets to town for a number of days, because it was just not safe for them to stay home ... Over the season I saw so much heart-break in other people - animals injured, homes and farms destroyed, people in tears time and again, said Luke.

Dean said with so much fire in the communities, there were times when they were directed to fall back and proceed to protect their own homes. “Every little win counted, whether it was holding the fire up for a day or two for more containment lines to be built, saving homes, and sometimes the same homes again over a week-long period. The support and gratitude from the community for the efforts we were making trying to save their properties really helped,” said Dean. How well do you think all the agencies worked together/supported each other? ake us back to the beginning ... Tell us about the history of Coffs Harbour Surf Life Saving Club. The roots of the Coffs Harbour Surf Life Saving Club started with the establishment of The Jetty Surf Club, founded in 1909 due to the increase in popularity of surf bathing amongst the public. The club grew steadily until 1914, when World War I took all the district's young men away; however, it was reborn by 1920, when the survivors of the Great War drifted back into town. In the 1922 - 1923 season, the first life saving awards were gained. These members provided a vital service until 1937, when the Jetty Beach was fully enclosed, leading to the club's demise. In 1923, a new club was formed at Park Beach, the Coffs Harbour Surf Life Saving Club, with the founding members attaining their Bronze Medallion in 1924. The clubhouse was initially built on Coffs Creek and was relocated to where the current club stands today. A rich history with many Coffs locals and their generations of family members has laid the foundations for our club; it is steeped in the traditions of surf life saving, and the founding members have left a legacy for the community to benefit from. The building has evolved, with multiple extensions to incorporate a fully licensed restaurant as we have today. Tell us about your connection to the Coffs Harbour Surf life Saving Club. Our members can be involved in a variety of activities: board paddling; surf swimming; beach sprints; flags; the more traditional events such as the march past and R&R; and for the thrill seekers amongst us, the team atmosphere of surf boat rowing. The club has scheduled board training available for all members three times a week during the season, and the boat crews train regularly to improve skills and technique. We encourage participation and welcome all members to be involved in the surf sports division, competing for Coffs Harbour at carnivals throughout the season. ith the spectre of COVID-19 hanging over us, it’s great to see so many people doing the right thing, and life returning slowly back to normal for most of us. In Government, we have had to keep the wheels turning and the last few weeks have seen a flurry of activity from ministers and departments delivering good news right here on the Coffs Coast. In late July, the Minister for Skills and Tertiary Education, Dr Geoff Lee, joined me to open the new Allied Health Hub at the TAFE NSW Coffs Harbour Campus. This $3.2 million investment into our local TAFE will expand the capacity of our local campus to deliver hands-on training in key health skills such as Dental Technology, Aboriginal Health, and Aged Care. MEET the PRINCIPALS

Peter Watts, Michael Carniato, Troy Baker and Liz Watts are the principals of the four Coffs Harbour Catholic Schools which, together,

educate over 2,500 local children. It was great to chat with these four educators today. We’re looking forward to hearing from them each month.

iz, we hear so many wonderful things about MHOC in the community. What one thing makes your school such a special place? Liz: Strong partnerships between school, home and parish are the key to making MHOC such a great place. Our dedicated, passionate staff, our caring parents and grandparents and our supportive faith community work hand in hand to grow great kids. Are your schools part of a wider network of schools? Liz: Our schools are parish schools, and we are but four of 45 Catholic schools in the Diocese of Lismore. There is a Catholic primary school in Bellingen and a small but beautiful one in Dorrigo. Our low-fee schools provide a comprehensive, quality education in a welcoming, secure environment. So, do children need to be Catholics to attend Catholic schools? Liz: The majority of our families are Catholic but no, children do not need to be Catholics to attend; everyone is welcome. Our points of difference are quality religious education, rich prayer experiences and a commitment to living the Gospel of Jesus Christ in all we say and do. What are you particularly proud of? Liz: There’s so much I could say here but, in this time and place, I’m feeling very proud of the hope and optimism of our students, staff and parents. There have been so many changes this year, and I’m inspired by the creativity and can-do attitude of our teachers. Lots of innovation! 60 COFFS COAST

Tell us a bit about your graduates. We have a strong history of outstanding academic achievement, and I am very proud of the young men and women who graduate from SJPC. Some go directly to university to study the traditional fields of law, medicine, education, health and engineering, others go on to further training, whilst others enter the defence force or workforce. Our graduates are working all over the world in diverse industries, and we love hearing of their many successes. We invite a past student

to speak at our graduation ceremony each year; we've had business owners, lawyers, artists, entertainment industry specialists, media personalities, athletes, the list goes on. Our students know that anything is possible beyond school. What is your hope for your Year 12 students as they move toward the end of their time at school? My hope for all our graduates is that they know they are valued for who they are and have a sense of purpose and direction. I hope that they are reflective, discerning and compassionate individuals who speak with confidence, but always remember the value of listening. I hope, and know, they will be the "salt of the earth" as they go out and make a difference in the world. You’re about to begin a significant building project. Tell us about that. We’re very excited! The state of the art library and learning centre will be incredible, with breakout spaces, cutting edge technology and a rooftop community hub. The new Sport and PE precinct will be

a centre of excellence for our many talented athletes and teams. These will add to the high quality spaces already available to our students, including the College Theatre and our industry-standard hospitality kitchens, metalwork and timber workshops, where students can contribute towards an industry recognised training certificate. Why do you think families want to enrol in the College? We are a faith-based school and time after time, the biggest compliment we hear is that students feel safe and cared for at SJPC. We are known for creating a feeling of belonging and community, and the bonds built in our feeder schools are strengthened and expanded at SJPC. Many of our parents are past students and still have an affinity for, and relationship with, the College. Our reputation is the result of many years of hard work and commitment by all of our staff - our best resource by far. Peter, Michael, Troy and Liz - thanks for your time today. COFFS COAST

i Mathew. Please introduce yourself and share your connection to the Coffs Coast. My name is Matthew. I moved to Dorrigo and the Mid North Coast when I was two years old and completed primary school and high school in Dorrigo, whilst working in various cafés and restaurants. Currently I am in a permanent role as a support worker and work in both the Life Skills Centre and In-Home and Community, supporting customers to access their supports and services, as well as achieve their goals. You’re passionate about inspiring people with disabilities to live a full life and to gain the practical skills required to work in the field, you committed to education with TAFE NSW. Tell us about this experience. By the time I had finished school, I kind of had an idea of what I would like to do as a career, so I started studying with TAFE NSW. I enrolled in the Certificate III in Disability Individual Support and having completed the majority of the theory, started to look for work placement. Having accessed Northcott and the Spina Bifida Clinic, Northcott was one of few services I looked at. I completed three months of work placement at Northcott's Life Skills Centre and was offered a casual position. Since starting with Northcott, I’ve completed a Certificate IV in Disability Individual Support and am currently doing a leadership course through TAFE NSW at the moment. What are you doing now after graduating from your Certificate IV in Disability Services? I’ve been working with the Northcott Society in Coffs Harbour for close to three years in both their Life Skills Centre and In-Home and Community work. As a support worker I have various roles and responsibilities, probably none more important than acting as a mentor and role model and being a voice for people with disabilities. This is a cause close to your heart, as you were born with Spina Bifida and understand there are daily struggles for people with disabilities within our community. Share a little about your story. I was born with Spina Bifida; this is a condition that leaves the spine exposed and easily damaged after birth. There are many different ways that having a disability can affect a person’s life and I think at times, our wider community and society in general don’t always take these things into account. I am extremely lucky to be where I am today, and I think I owe a thank you to so many people

along the journey, from the doctors and medical specialists right through to my family and friends, particularly my mum, who has done so much for me over the years. There are three different types of Spina Bifida. These are Occulta, Myelomeningocele and Meningocele. These can all have various complications, which range from mild to severe. I have Spina Bifida Myelomeningocele. What do you love most about your daily role, and where do you see your career leading into the future? I love being a role model for the customers I work with and sharing my own experiences with those around me. I love being able to go to work and make a difference in someone’s life. As someone with a disability, a huge thing for me is to act as an advocate and a voice for those I work for and with, helping to empower them and let them live their life to the fullest through a variety of supports and services. It is vital they are receiving the right support and services. I’m happy with where I’m heading with my career and my current role. UPDATE with NICK JOHNSTONE

FROM BISHOP DRUITT COLLEGE

ecently, tens of thousands of Australians took part in protests calling for an end to Indigenous deaths in custody. These protest marches included children and teens from our schools across the Coffs Coast. This worldwide social movement has raised a variety of questions in our schools about the role of protests in our democracy, the issues surrounding the trigger points for the Black Lives Matter demonstrations, and the ongoing issues of racial inequality throughout Australia. In this article, I will highlight discussions that have occurred within our school community and in particular with our secondary school Goori Group. Bishop Druitt College has two Goori Groups: a primary school group with 27 Aboriginal students, and a secondary school group with 28 Aboriginal students. The secondary students were asked why they marched or why they thought others marched in the recent demonstrations. The answers were extensive and included the following concepts: • ongoing concerns regarding racism • looking for social change on the Indigenous over-representation in death in custody and incarceration • to increase their political voice due to a feeling of social indifference • to create a sense of solidarity with all people of colour, but particularly in creating a sense of pride within Aboriginal peoples. KEY EMPLOYMEN T MOONEE BAKERY! Family owned business "baking up" opportunities on the Coffs Coast!

T

ell us about Moonee Bakery. The Moonee Beach Bakery is proudly family owned and operated. We have enjoyed great success and been blessed with the opportunity to have our family working here together in Coffs. Even my dad, a retired baker of 77 years young, still comes in to help us out. I previously owned and operated a bakery in Tasmania for over 25 years and starting the business in Moonee in April 2020, I believed I was setting up my own sons (Brody, Hamish and Dylan’s) future. I firmly believe we can bring our tried and tested methods to the Coffs Coast and feel our dedication to product and customer service is helping us thrive. We are building our reputation on quality products, friendly service and dedication to our customers. We are passionate about producing exceptional bread, pastries, and cakes. My sons and I work seven days a week to satisfy our customers and produce the largest range of products in Coffs Harbour. We are very proud to say we source our ingredients locally, and everything is made on site.

How do you find working with your sons? I never picked my sons to become bakers, but I have tried to pass on everything I know and their dedication makes me proud each and every day. Being an old school baker myself, I find great pleasure in bringing some of the tasty treats of yesteryear back into production, and we’re finding our customers are responding to it with great appreciation. We still use my dad’s sixty year old recipe for our bread - a recipe which has won us many awards in the past - and we claim it as the absolute best! It’s honestly great to be passing on my knowledge, which had come from my own dad, down the line. Do you have other staff besides your sons? Absolutely; all our staff are wonderful. We’ve got Dayna, Krystal and Jesse all providing excellent customer service over the weekends, and the boys are in the kitchen from midnight every night preparing our bread for trade the next day. As you can imagine, we are pretty busy all the time, so developing a partnership with a local employment service

has proved an excellent move as we grow our business. We’ve been working with Key Employment now since our establishment and found them to be helpful at every turn. They’ve made the process easy and rewarding to our business, as we add more faces to our dedicated team. Recently joining us with the help of Key Employment were Shakira and Carly as our customer service superstars, as well as Shane, who is our new apprentice baker/pastry cook. We honestly couldn’t be happier with all of them! Sometimes it can be difficult to organise an apprentice when you are as busy as we are, but Key Employment have assisted us every step of the way. All our new staff have become part of our growing family business, and we take great pride in offering opportunities where we can to our local community. Key Employment has helped us find some excellent new staff and it’s great to give these young people an opportunity here in Coffs, where it is often so hard to find work. Our partnership with Key Employment has made that possible.

Animal RESCUE COFFS HARBOUR

Our four legged friends share our most basic needs to survive: shelter, food and water. But we all know that kindness, love and compassion make us better human beings and it's exactly the same for these animals, who find themselves under the care of Animal Rescue Coffs Harbour.

H

eather Watkins is the Deputy President of ARCH and sees firsthand the importance of these attributes towards dogs and cats, who really just want to be loved and cared for. Hi Heather. Please introduce yourself and share how you got started with the organisation. My name is Heather Watkins, and I moved 66 COFFS COAST

focus

to Coffs Harbour about four years ago. I was a foster carer with a rescue group in Wollongong and when I moved to Coffs, I knew I wanted to be involved with another rescue group. It was actually my husband who found ARCH, at a Bunnings sausage sizzle of course. I got to meet the team and then became a foster carer. After a time, I realised I was happy to be part of the committee also, as I do have the time to volunteer. I am now the deputy president

and love doing what I do and being part of an awesome group of dedicated people. When was ARCH established, and how does it differ from other animal shelters? ARCH was established in 2013 by a small group of people, and we are still run completely by volunteers. We have a board committee, as well as members who support our activities and objectives. All our funding comes from donations and adoption fees. And all money goes directly to meeting ARCH objectives - primarily the veterinary costs of animals in our care. ARCH is very different to animal shelters, in the way that we do not have a shelter at all. We rely on individual foster carers to look after the animals we rescue in their own home. This gives us a much better idea of the animal’s personality, and hopefully, allows us to rehome to the perfect home environment. The shelter environment can be very stressful on animals and may even cause them to shut down. This is where ARCH has a big advantage, in that the animals are in a home situation, most often sleeping inside and surrounded by loving foster carers. The animals will be exposed to many things in their foster environment, depending on the carer. This could include other animals or birds, and other family members including children. Tell us how the animals end up in your carers' homes and how imperative these foster carers are? ARCH rescues dogs and cats mainly from country pounds, where they may be at risk of euthanasia. We operate quite closely with the wonderful pound attendant at the Nambucca Shire Pound, who works tirelessly to ensure that no animals in her care are put to sleep. One of our members will drive to the pound to collect the animal, and we then match the animal with a suitable foster carer - for example, some carers can only care for small dogs, some carers can only look after cats or kittens. Foster carers are the most important part of our rescue organisation; without them, we could not operate as we do. We supply some items for the animal, and ARCH pays for all vet work. The foster carer just needs to supply a loving and safe environment and in some cases, such as puppies especially, provide some basic training. Foster caring is a very rewarding experience, and we encourage animal lovers to open up their homes and hearts to enable ARCH to rescue even more animals.

Once the pets are with their foster homes, what role does ARCH play, and what comes next for those animals moving onto adoption? All animals that come into the care of ARCH have any relevant vet work completed. This not only includes vaccinations and desexing, but can also mean expensive dental work and other surgeries that are required. We had a recent dog that was unfortunately injured whilst at the pound, and ARCH was contacted to ensure that urgent veterinary treatment was undertaken, which did result in an amputation, but as the dog was young and healthy, she is now living a great life with a new home of her own. ARCH ensures all animals are kept up to date with flea and tick treatments and also worming. And then, once an application is received for an animal, we contact the potential forever. Another issue is that another aspect to consider when adopting or people may think an older dog will not be as purchasing a dog. loyal or obedient as getting a puppy may be. Animals need basic care, such as food, This is definitely not the case, and if you rescue water and shelter. They also require veterinary a dog and bring him home and show him attention as needed, and this is a financial unconditional love, you will have a best friend commitment to be considered also. All animals

need to be microchipped and registered with their local council. ARCH also believes that all animals should be desexed as soon as appropriate for their age. The advantages of adopting through a rescue group such as ARCH is that all of this is normally included in the adoption fee. All animals, especially dogs, should have identification tags and have their microchip details up to date in the awful situation that they go missing. A big part of responsible pet ownership with dogs is ensuring they get adequate exercise and mental stimulation. We encourage all new puppy owners to undertake puppy preschool or training with a local trainer. With adult dogs, training is also a great way to establish and strengthen the bond between yourself and your new dog. Socialisation is another important aspect - it is all about getting your dog comfortable with all types of things in his environment. This includes other dogs and animals, people, cars and new situations. Cats and kittens certainly benefit from playtime also, and if inside only, love to have scratching posts and play towers to climb on. Most importantly, remember to have patience and compassion, and best of all, be ready for a lifetime of love! Thanks Heather. possibilities for the remote workplace. There are an entire collection of people travelling the world constantly, stopping for a few months at a time and immersing themselves in the destination before moving on to another destination, all the while logging in and working remotely. Whilst we’re all stuck at home right now, it won't be like this forever. If you’re stuck in a rut and looking for a new adventure, looking to challenge yourself with a foreign language or an international cuisine, then get yourself ready for travel experiences in the future by learning a foreign language, or take a cooking class in your own town. You’ll be prepared and ready for the genuine experience, because nothing beats experiencing a culture first hand. When you first arrive in a foreign city, it’s the overindulgence of all your senses that drives you to return time after time, and nothing beats the feeling of satisfaction after you’ve challenged yourself to something new. It’s becoming increasingly common to celebrate special occasions somewhere exotic, and this has seen an increase in people travelling to visit or celebrate with family and friends. There also continues to be a large number of young school leavers travelling for the traditional “Gap Year”, before settling down for further education. In 2020, our celebrations might be a bit closer to home, but there are still lots of excellent opportunities to celebrate in style. One thing is for sure; travel changes the way we view the world. It helps us be more accepting of our differences, and it is true when they say “of all the books in the world, the best stories can be found between the pages of a passport”. Dream now; travel later.

arch 23rd will always be a significant day for all of us at Coffs Coast Health Club and many other gyms and businesses across Australia. We were notified that we would close by 12pm. I started my day by entering the gym with no idea whether we had our jobs. With all my might, I tried not to cry. That lasted 30 seconds. I cried; my first client cried. Actually, I think I cried with all of the clients that morning! All I knew at that point was I needed to do everything in my power to help the people around me keep some kind of normality. Little did I know that being forced to change the way I delivered my service to my clients and members of the gym would lead to me discovering a calmer version of myself. We have been told and heard many times that exercise is good for mental health, but I hadn’t discovered its true power until I was forced in front of a camera to share myself in people’s living rooms, gardens and poolsides. Blindness and AMPUTATIONS

The Genuinely Scary Risks with Diabetes!

with AARON HARDAKER With over 5% of the Australian population already diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, it is a disease that is having an enormous impact on the health of our community. Often dismissed as a simple problem that you just need to keep an eye on, you may be shocked to know that T2 Diabetes is the leading cause of both blindness and amputation in Australia! We caught up with Sam Brown, Exercise Physiologist at Mid North Coast Physio, to find out how to better manage Type 2 Diabetes.

S

am, what is Type 2 Diabetes? Diabetes is the fastest growing chronic health condition in Australia, with 280 new cases daily and total of 1.7 million people living with the condition. Type 2 Diabetes is a lifestyle disease, meaning it is developed with unhealthy lifestyle habits and in most cases is preventable. It develops through long term exposure to high levels of blood glucose. What are the potential health effects? High blood glucose can damage the body's blood vessels and nerves and as a result, can lead to many secondary chronic health conditions. It is the leading cause of preventable

blindness and amputations in Australia and significantly increases your risk of kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, heart attack and stroke. How is it treated? Medication is often required initially to help improve insulin efficiency, but exercise and diet are the two most modifiable risk factors to prevent Type 2 Diabetes. Muscles require energy to move, and the primary source of energy is glucose. So, regular exercise reduces blood glucose without the need for insulin, and this continues following exercise to replenish glucose stores within the muscles. Resistance exercise helps to increase lean muscle mass, which in turn leads to an increased ability to reduce blood glucose during exercise. Exercise is also important in reducing the risk of secondary health by reducing blood pressure, cholesterol, improving circulation and reducing body fat. Thanks Sam. Mid North Coast Physio offers specialised group exercise programs for people with Type 2 Diabetes. Medicare rebates are available for these groups with a specific referral from your GP. PLACENTA LIFE Sally, what exactly is your business about? Placenta Life is dedicated in supporting new mothers wishing to benefit from using their placenta to boost their postnatal recovery. I specialise in preparing and dehydrating the placenta, which is then ground down into a fine powder and placed into “easy to swallow" capsules. There are different types of preparation and methods, which are detailed on my website. Giving birth is such a significant event, but those first days and weeks of motherhood are just as important! I am passionate about helping to nourish and heal new mothers during this fourth trimester. What are the main benefits of taking the capsules?

72 COFFS COAST

focus

New mothers who have their placenta encapsulated consistently report improved mood and increased energy levels when taking their placenta capsules. They also find the capsules support a healthy breast milk supply. I think that if the placenta can play such a crucial role in pregnancy by providing essential nutrients for your growing baby, then why not benefit from these rich nutrients and minerals after your baby is born. What other products do you make from the placenta? I can supply face creams, balms for both mother and baby and also tinctures. With every placenta encapsulation I also offer a complimentary placenta print and umbilical cord keepsake, which new mums love!

W

hat inspired you to study and become a naturopath? It was by pure accident. I was studying a Bachelor of Exercise Science & Nutrition at Southern Cross University and did a placement working in stroke rehabilitation. I was so frustrated when I was doing everything the research told me to do and I wasn’t achieving any of the outcomes I was seeing in the research. It was that frustration that led me to have a light bulb moment. It was all about what was happening on the inside! A few of my units at university crossed over with these people called naturopaths; I’d never heard of them, let alone understood what they did. So, I sat in on a few classes and was hooked. It all seemed so logical. I doubled my degree to finish with a Bachelor of Exercise Science & Nutrition and a Bachelor of Clinical Sciences double major Complementary Medicine and Naturopathic Practice. What kind of conditions can you help? There is not a health condition that a naturopath cannot support. After graduating in 2011, I worked in many areas of health to see which area I was most inspired by. Four years ago, I opened my own practice, specialising in male and female hormones, fertility and

pregnancy preparation. What treatments do you use? To best identify which recommendations and treatments are going to be most effective, with the least intervention, I research current health, symptoms, diagnosis and conditions, which I use to formulate a report of findings. Individualised treatment plans typically consists of: • Diet, lifestyle and self-care measures • Vitamins, minerals, enzymes, probiotics • Botanical Herbal medicines • Homeopathic and Flower Essence medicines • Exercise and movement therapy • Stress management and Lifestyle recommendations • Circadian support for optimised sleep/wake cycles Referral to other health care providers, including medical doctors and/or adjunctive care such as massage, acupuncture, and physical therapy if needed. How can we get in touch? You can find me via my website www.kinandtonics.com.au to schedule a complimentary 15 minute naturopathic assessment to ask your questions and see if I’m the right practitioner for you, on Facebook at Kin & Tonics, Instagram katy_lawryk_at_kin_ and_tonics or via email at clinic@ kinandtonics.com.au

SNAPPERS W O M E N ' S R U G BY U N I O N

Women's rugby union has come a long way over the past few years and with opportunities on the Mid North Coast expanding, the future of the game is looking very positive. We caught up with Tanya and Ashlee from the Coffs Harbour Women's Snappers, to chat all things footy.

H

i Tanya and Ashlee. You’re well into the rugby season. How is it to be back out playing again with your team after such an intense start to 2020? It’s great to be back out on the field with the team. It was a bit of a shaky start and there was a lot of uncertainty as to whether or not we would be able to play. Thankfully, our club (and others) worked really hard to put together a competition for us. The team members are super keen to redeem ourselves after our disappointing Grand Final loss to Port Pirates last year. In what is a typically male dominated sport, you women step out onto the field each week and show people what you can do. What's that like? I’ve played a lot of different sports in my time, but nothing beats the comradery of Rugby. The pregame nerves in the dressing sheds, the feeling of running out on to the field with your team mates, the sound of that first hit, and singing the club song after a win. I’ve been fortunate to play with (and against) some really talented women. Being able to show people we can tackle hard, kick well and run a gap just as good as the guys is very satisfying. There is demand and determination to grow the game. What does the future of women's rugby look like?

74 COFFS COAST

focus

I started playing rugby 20 years ago, and we were lucky to get one or two games a season. There was no competition and the closest women’s team was three - four hours away, or in the city. We continued to train, despite the lack of games and relied on tournaments like Sawtell 7s and Byron 7s to get a run. Today, I am very envious that there is a lot more opportunities for women in rugby. We now have a Mid North Coast competition, which is slowly growing. It started as a 7s competition, and now we are playing 10s and the way women’s rugby is growing, soon enough we will have a 15s competition. There is nothing better than seeing more and more young ladies have the opportunity to play in the Friday night junior competition. The success of the Australian Women’s 7s side and the inception of the Super W competition in 2018 proves there is popularity and growth in women’s rugby. It’s exciting to see two former team mates play in the Sydney competition this year, which is a stepping stone to the Super W. The future of women’s rugby is looking good. What's the support been like from friends and family? As a team, we always have family and friends come out and support us on game day. Having people you know come and support always makes you play that little bit harder. It’s always nice receiving positive comments from other supporters, letting you know the team played

well. What have you learnt about yourselves since starting out? For a lot of us, women’s rugby is not just a sport. We love everything about the game and what it teaches us. We have learnt to be strong, confident and determined not only on the field, but also off the field. Playing rugby has also taught us commitment and respect for our team mates. And most importantly, it’s where many great friendships can be made. Outside of football, what roles and responsibilities do you have/play within the larger community? Tanya: During the day I can be found at I-med Radiology, where I work as a radiographer. It's a job which has been beneficial to some of my team mates over the years. My children are members of Woopi Nippers, so I also dedicate some of my free time helping out the committee. Ashlee: Outside of rugby, I work at McGrath Real Estate in a sales support role. But on the weekends and afternoons you will always find me setting up the day for rugby games, as well as organising events for the club. I love being a part of the committee for the Coffs Snappers. The support from the other committee members, who are all volunteers, is so incredible. We all just want to ensure that our club is the best that it can be for all of its players and supporters. Thanks ladies.

hat is Holistik Health and how did it come about? After experiencing many traumatic events throughout my life, from infancy through to adulthood, the effects became evident - and I endured years of ill health. During my 30s, I got proactive about my health and spent over a decade completing studies in health sciences, nutritional medicine, mental health, trauma, EMDR, fitness, meditation, yoga, reiki and more. I changed my diet and lifestyle, incorporated natural supplements, started processing unhealed traumas, began my spiritual, mental and emotional health journey, created my own wellness script,

and regained health, happiness, peace and passion for life. I created my own therapeutic health and wellness service in order to reach, inspire and support others struggling with sub-optimal health; Holistik Health is my way of sharing my knowledge and experiences in order to help others. The current health crisis has people stressed and concerned. How can Holistik Health assist them? Two of my specialty areas are immunity and mental health. I love showing people how they can optimise or modulate their immune systems (including those with autoimmune issues), along with showing clients how they can effectively learn to manage stress, anxiety and depression, sustainably.

What other services do you offer? Nutrition and nutritional medicine, EMDR Trauma Therapy, meditation, personal training and more. I tailor my evidence-based services to meet client needs and ensure that we address all areas of their health and wellness, Holistikally! Final say ... I

offer physiotherapy services which include treatments of any musculoskeletal injuries, such as muscle tears, tendonitis, lower back pain, rotator cuff and shoulder injuries, knee, ankle, elbow, neck etc. ... basically, you name it, I can treat it. I also provide patients with exercise programs and post-operative physiotherapy for ex. post knee replacement. My style is very hands-on, including massage, dry needling/acupuncture, joint mobilisation, and exercise, as opposed to utilising a lot of machines. My special interest is in working with people with chronic pain. Conditions like chronic low back pain, sciatica, osteoarthritis, chronic headaches and/or migraines, fibromyalgia, nerve damage, etc. This also includes working with people with chronic diseases or disabilities. What makes me unique as a physiotherapist is that I put an emphasis on mental health as part of my treatments. Often, poor mental health or past trauma can make a significant impact on a person's pain levels, so treating them physically is not enough to get a great outcome. I am trained in utilising CBT

(cognitive behavioural therapy) for chronic pain management, but also utilise other techniques to help people with their mental health in conjunction with their physical health. If it's beyond my scope, I have a good referral base in the community with counsellors and therapists that I can set the patient up with. Anyone suffering from chronic pain or pain whilst also battling depression, anxiety, or any other disorders would be an ideal fit. I have also enjoyed working with young athletes as they rehabilitate injuries and help them get their confidence back before returning to sport. Lastly, I also offer mentoring opportunities to young people in our community. This is mostly focused on young males only, because I feel I can relate to them more myself, but is open to females as well. I have had a few young men close to me commit suicide due to struggles with money, relationships, and general life stresses. It's my way of passing on things that I have learned to help young people reach their goals and avoid being another statistic. I am working with headspace, in town to continue to build this up further.

FINANCE EXPERTS

W

hat is your professional career background? We both commenced in the finance industry in 1989, working for a corporate in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. We moved home to Newcastle for a couple of years, then Craig was promoted to Commercial Banking Management roles in Tamworth and then Orange. Christine held positions across personal, commercial banking and financial planning during this time. In 2002 we chose to relocate to Coffs Harbour with our young family. Craig was Senior Commercial Manager until 2013, then a leadership role as Regional Executive North Coast and New England until 2016. Christine held the position of Home Finance Manager since 2009. What is the history behind My Mortgage Manager? My Mortgage Manager was founded in Coffs Harbour in 2012 by Director Christine McGregor. We are an independent (nonfranchise) locally owned family business providing bespoke finance advisory services to individuals, businesses and corporations. The name typifies what we do, which is having an intimate ongoing relationship with our clients, being the consistent partner, ensuring their finances are structured in the clients' best interests for now and in the future. You have recently commenced dual businesses with launching McGregor Finance and undertaken re-branding? We felt it was important to differentiate the businesses between our areas of expertise. My Mortgage Manager, operated by Chris, provides advisory services in residential and investment property lending, whilst Craig, who

had been trading under the same name, will now operate as McGregor Finance, servicing our business and commercial clients. It also provides a collaborative approach for our clients, to ensure they are obtaining specialist advice in each area. Our original logo was a product of us doodling on a drive to Newcastle one weekend. The design carried our ethos of holding our client’s hand through the loan process and into the future, making them feel safe and secure. We felt it was time to refresh and come up with a logo to be used across both businesses, whilst maintaining the original theme. We engaged with Outspoken Entourage and are thrilled with the outcome. The new logo embodies this original theme, whilst being more simplified, concise and relaxed … generally how we approach our dealings. What services do you offer? We specialise in finance for first home buyers, residential and investment purchases or refinances, investment property portfolio management, commercial property investment and development, business and cashflow finance across all industries, SMSF (LRBA), motor vehicle and equipment finance. We offer our clients a holistic service, utilising our expertise in finance and extending that to our business partnerships across real estate, legal and conveyancing, home builders, financial planners, accountants, property maintenance and other finance and property related specialists. We have established a loyal client base due to our delivery of superior service and outstanding results for our clients. We see you have expanded into Newcastle. We now have offices at two locations; The

Promenade, Coffs Harbour, and 755 Hunter Street, Newcastle. Our clients can be located anywhere in Australia; however, the majority are located on the east coast between Brisbane and Sydney. Tell us about your community involvement. Chris is a committee member of Pink Silks, which is an amazing charity raising much needed funds for health initiatives on the Coffs Coast. We support, sponsor and donate to the Coffs Comets, Northern Storm FC, CHBC (Coffs Boardriders) and RISE Academy via our My Community Partnerships. These are all leading local clubs that have very strong values and principles around youth and culture in our community. In addition, we are regular donators to Pink Silks, Diabetes Australia and Cancer Council. What do you have planned for 2021 and beyond? Further investment in technology to assist clients to have improved financial education and be in greater control of their finances. We are launching a Seminar Series via Podcast, which will provide updates on finance and other associated industries. ell us about your team ... and what does the loan application process look like? We are a true family business. Our eldest daughter, Emma started in business in 2016 and currently manages our Newcastle office. She provides direct support to Chris in the client manager role, completing loan assessment and research. Our son, Lucas started in the family business in 2017 as client assistant, completing clients' loan pre-assessment tasks and file audits. We start by meeting up with you at a time and place that suits you. During the initial consultation, we discuss what your financial and personal needs and goals are, now, short term and long term. We then request from you supporting information for loan assessment, work on structure and commence researching many different products from a range of 30+ lenders, to ensure we provide the right solution that meets your needs and goals. We then present you with our recommendation and loan proposal. We will manage the application process right through to settlement. We then remain in constant contact via our CRM (Customer Relationship Management) with regular calls, SMS or emails, with updates on market-leading products and interest rate updates. What are some advantages in using My Mortgage Manager?

The relationship we build with our clients is based on trust and understanding.

We have a focus on delivering outstanding customer service and a carefully considered, strategic approach. This advisory is centred around enabling you to fulfil your property and wealth creation plans. The structure of your finances has a massive impact on the amount of wealth you can create through property. Having access to a wide choice of lenders provides a borrower the greatest opportunity to maximise their borrowing capacity based on their personal situation. We spend time educating our clients, ensuring they understand finance, as it likely to be one of their biggest life decisions. The relationship we build with our clients is based on trust and understanding. We are engaged by our clients and have a long term interest in that relationship. We are their consistent partner. What does your typical client look like? What is great is that we have no two customers alike. Our clients consist of young

first and second home buyers, upgraders or renovators, singles and couples refinancing to save or implement an investment strategy, experienced property investors with multi-million dollar property portfolios. It is great to now also see some of our clients moving along their property investment journey as a way to create wealth. We welcome new conversations, open communication and real engagement. What recent changes are you seeing from lenders? A combination of tighter home loan lending regulations and the uncertainty in our new COVID experience have people finding out the hard way that it's not as easy to get a home loan approved as it used to be. The simple reason for this is that financial regulators have set tighter rules for lenders. Now they are required to look more closely at your daily living expenses, to gain a better idea of your ability to make your repayments now and into the future. There is no better time than now to have a finance expert.

Supported by Konrad, who has experience in and around business and finance, we form a solid team. Our role as finance advisory conduit between our client and lender or bank, gives the business owner back time they spend dealing with lenders, to enable them to concentrate on managing and growing their business. We work with many of our clients, business partners, accountants, solicitors, property agents etc. to ensure the optimum outcome. We provide direction and solutions to the business owner, use our experience to skilfully implement debt placement strategies, undertake negotiations with existing and/or alternative financiers to structure and/or restructure debt and security, and ensure optimum interest rates for risk and maximising the return on their equity. We have an expansive knowledge and experience

with our clients across many industries, such as accounting, construction, earthmoving, hospitality, legal, manufacturing, medical, property, real estate, transport and wholesalers. Who/what are some of McGregor Finance's commercial clients and their successes? We are grateful to be involved with many local successful businesses, which inspires us to deliver valuable results. Our approach to strategically structure their financing has enabled the below businesses to grow and prosper, and to take opportunities when they are presented. At times, this results in using multiple lenders, as it may not fit an existing bank's current lending appetite. The Provedores, food wholesalers and distributors, has been a true local success story. Commencing in late 2016 employing a handful of staff, to relocating to new larger warehouse premises and acquiring businesses in Newcastle and now servicing a geographical area between Byron and Gosford. Other clients benefiting from our services include a global wine distribution company, multi-site childcare operator, furniture wholesaler, national joinery business, leading earthworks companies and road transport.

hy is seeing a financial planner so important in the current environment? Given the current volatility of the financial market, heightened by a global pandemic, it is now even more important to seek financial advice. Typically, when there is uncertainty, people are more likely to make erratic or poor decisions. A financial plan, backed by the support of a financial planner, will ensure that long term goals and objectives aren’t railroaded by short term emotional decisions. Do you think there is still the potential to grow wealth during this period? Whilst timing the market is always difficult to achieve, there are certainly opportunities to take advantage of quality growth assets such as shares and property, that have seen a recent decline in value off the back of COVID-19. Regular and long-term investing are a fundamental element to building wealth through all market cycles. What steps should be taken to protect wealth? Protecting your wealth is an extremely important step in benefiting from a comprehensive financial plan. Australians typically insure their possessions; however, when it comes to protecting themselves through death, accident, illness or loss of income - we are not so good. Wealth protection ensures you and your loved ones are protected should something unforeseen occur. It provides some peace of mind

86 COFFS COAST

focus

that you can continue to live life as normally as possible post the event, with relief from financial pressures. Wealth protection also comes in the way you choose to select and manage investments. We often meet people who are "returns" focused and want to see their investments growing as fast as possible. Where we can add value is in factoring in risk for you. By examining the risk you are comfortable taking, and providing insight into a level appropriate for your situation, we can balance out your investment strategy. This gives you a greater chance of preserving wealth in market downturns, while still growing over the long term. How concerned should we be about current super performances? Superannuation by design is a long-term investment, with strict rules on accessibility. Accumulators that are still working and have a longer timeframe until retirement should not be overly concerned, as their employers are paying 9.5% Superannuation Guarantee Contributions into their nominated super accounts on a regular basis. This will assist navigating through shorter term volatility and will ensure that longer term gains are still achieved. Even those who are about to enter retirement or perhaps are in retirement should not be overly concerned either, as retirement timeframes are still long term. Financial advisers can provide clarity and understanding of your risk profile, capital value

and abilities to generate a certain income that will give you the necessary understanding to make informed lifestyle decisions throughout retirement. Markets move up and down; that is normal. A good investment strategy will factor in significant downturns as well. While we can't predict when they will happen, we do know that they occur and recommend that people are prepared for that. This largely points to the balance between risk and return. If your investment strategy takes both of those elements into consideration, and they also reflect you and your goals, then you are well positioned to ride out the storm. If you are unsure, now is the best time to get an expert opinion. Advice you can trust We provide advice with a difference; we have a vibrant, dynamic team of five financial planners who want to see you achieve your dreams and goals and live your best possible life. Our planners Ben Warren and Brendan Biddle established Invest Blue Coffs Harbour 15 years ago and now have over 20 years of experience behind them. Through strong client relationships, trust, and a determination to provide advice that makes a difference to lives of their clients, the business and the team have flourished, with Tom Merrick, Gretel Chiswell and Nick Grady joining the team. They are supported by our relationship managers Tracee Wuoti and Simone Wills, who are an essential part of ensuring we deliver quality advice you can trust.

Is Your Technology A Fire Risk In Your Home?

Y

ou love your technology and probably have a lot of it at home. You might not think of computers, smartphones, printers, or routers etc. as a fire risk, but they are, and they can do real damage to your loved ones and your home. So, what should you do? Keeping in mind that your technology generates heat when it’s switched on - that’s why it’s designed with venting - it’s crucial that they are maintained correctly, to minimise the risk of fire. Desktop computers have fans to push out the hot air, but they can get clogged with dust, dirt and pet hair and even become blocked. Often, we’ll see computers that have been pushed up against a wall, covered with papers, or kept in a small alcove that gets no airflow. Some tips to prevent overheating and ensure that your computer isn’t working harder than it needs to be: • Keep the room cool that your computer is stored in • Don’t store items on top of or around your computer • Keep the outside case clear of dust • Have your computer thoroughly cleaned annually Laptops can also overheat and catch on fire. People often sit with their laptops literally on their lap, or on a blanket or pillow. If you’re blocking the device’s exhaust port, the laptop can’t cool down. Some tips to keep your laptop cool and functioning effectively:

• Always use your laptop on a hard, flat that are plugged into them, injury from surface electrocution and fire. Treat swollen batteries seriously; remove power to the device and turn it off, store it in a fireproof box, and get the battery replaced as soon as possible. Another tech-related fire threat is the rat’s nest of cables hiding behind the desk and the "piggy backing" of power boards - both can be extremely dangerous. James ANDER SON M O O S E C R E AT I V E

We spoke to James Anderson, the guy behind Moose Creative, about how he got started in video production and the kind of work he’s doing based here on the Coffs Coast.

J

ames is passionate about his work and his drive and creativity are not only pushing his business towards success, but he is clearly determined to also get behind many other local businesses and use his skills to help to build them up too. Hey James. Where did your love of filmmaking begin? I’m a Coffs local, and my company Moose Creative has been around since 2015. Growing up, a few mates and I would make videos for fun. We entered a few competitions, but it started as a hobby. Then I studied communications and found my niche within video production, which is important for any young filmmakers - learn how to do everything at a basic level, but find your niche and become an expert at it! I found my passion in video production recently; it’s this middle space between storytelling and small business marketing, trying to help businesses grow through content production. It’s well known that video is important for engaging an audience on social media, but it’s no good creating one video when social media demands regular content. I’ve tried to fit into this space. Do you have professional training as a video editor, or did you learn the ropes through trial and error ? I’m self-taught in video editing, but I have a Bachelor of Communications, which has

94 COFFS COAST

focus

helped me craft stories for my clients. I’ve learnt all the technical skills by trial and error. The real challenge in production is story-telling; that’s a craft I’m still learning. It’s pretty easy to learn how to edit, or how to light a subject now with YouTube and heaps of learning platforms available online. But telling a story is the creative process that takes years of trial and error. What's your creative process when it comes to creating a new piece of work? First, I meet with a client and understand what their needs are. In most cases, clients come to me asking for a video, but in reality they require a solution to a problem. So, we have a meeting to figure out what the problem is, and how to solve that problem. In most cases, video is part of the solution, but not always. Once I have a brief, I love putting pencil to paper. That’s the first step for me - a brainstorm session getting everything on paper; whether it’s drawings or word maps, it helps start the process. Then I try to make sense of the mess I’ve made, and usually a storyboard comes from this, which I digitise. Which is the most challenging project you’ve worked on and why? Which was the most enjoyable? Our latest project was for a TV series airing on ABC called The Sound. The show was put together quickly as a response to COVID-19 and each week featured Australian music legends past and present, as well as actors

and media personalities. We were asked to be involved as production crew up and down the Mid North Coast filming for the series. We had to deliver all the footage within six hours of filming, which was a challenge but an exciting project to be part of, filming local stars like Bryan Brown and Jack Thompson. The set-up was also a challenge to work through, as the director and producer were on a Zoom chat working with the talent, whilst we filmed in their homes. The most enjoyable projects include working with national brands that are based here in Coffs Harbour, like Smarttek or Planet Lighting. These are massive companies in their industries that most of Coffs Harbour wouldn’t realise are based here in our community. We’ve got some big plans for Smarttek’s video production over the next 12 months; it’s great to be involved with brands like this. What types of projects would you like to be working on in the future? I would like to one day work on larger productions with teams of creatives - in video production you get some amazing results when you collaborate with experts. For now, I love what I’m doing and the space that I’m in - working with small to medium businesses on their creative marketing, and freelancing on bigger projects. Thanks James.

i Wayne and Chris. Please introduce yourselves and share your connection to the Coffs Coast. Chris: I was born here on the Coffs Coast and started my life in Emerald Beach. Later the family moved into town, and I completed high school at Orara High. You could say I had the typical "Coffs kid"upbringing, which consisted of surfing, football, fishing and dirt bike riding in the bush. Our typical mode of transport was a rusty old bush bike, with surfboard racks bolted to one side. It was through these years that I started building my appreciation and connection with this beautiful area. As I grew older, I travelled and moved around a lot more, which made this connection grow stronger. I always knew

the influence of our fathers, who are both builders. Wayne was a bit more reluctant to start with, hailing from Canada. He tells horror stories of having to work outside in the Canadian winter, but stuck with it throughout his teens until he moved to Australia. I, on the other hand, saw the lifestyle of my dad as a builder on the Coffs Coast, and this seemed an appealing option - particularly for a kid who was not so interested in the classroom. In both cases, we were inspired by our dads, who paved the road before us. As for starting the business, both Wayne and I are big believers in challenging ourselves and self-growth, and our business is just a manifestation of that. Plus, being your own boss has its perks. A company is only as good as its team. Tell us about the one you have here. Couldn’t agree more! We are very proud of our Meraki team. We all have 15 to 20 years of experience and are very capable individuals, each bringing our own style and flair to the

table. We all play different lead roles at different times, which keeps it interesting for everyone. We believe that a good team culture cultivates quality workmanship, pride in our work and a happy and healthy work environment. With the addition of a few new staff members this year, Meraki is looking stronger than ever! People are really leaning into their own style and conveying that through their homes. How do you help conceptualise this for your clients? Actually, conceptualising a project is now easier and more exciting than ever, since the addition of visual media and apps like Pinterest and Instagram. The first thing we do with a client is sit down and go through a bunch of inspiration pictures, so they can show us concept and design elements that they like and dislike, and we can advise on the spot. This preliminary sit-down works well, as it allows everyone to get on the same page and for the process to become a lot more

streamlined. We appreciate how important this step is for people designing their abode, and we take the time to make sure they are happy. With the addition of visual media, concepts have become a lot more than just painting a different colour on a wall and calling it a "feature wall". There are some wild designs out there today, probably something our fathers didn’t have to wrangle with in their building careers. We are far more adapted to the times and are always up for a challenge! What do you most enjoy about the concept design process? The preliminary design/concept stage is always fun. The initial sit-down with the client to get the creative juices flowing somehow always ends up becoming a frenzy of inspiration, with pictures being sent back and forth in the following weeks. This gets everyone excited and makes for a fun way to build rapport with our clients. But the thing we love most about the concept design process is coming out the other end with a plan drawn up, ready to go to council - a plan that not only looks great, but is super functional too. >>> COFFS COAST

What makes Meraki Built unique? We like to keep our team small. This creates space between us and larger building companies, as it allows us to maintain great communication across the board, keep our quality of workmanship high and adopt a more personable approach. We are a team who love taking on a challenge, particularly where our creative flair meets functional design. As mentioned earlier, this means we not only like our work to look good, but we take the time to think about the functionality aspect as well. You’ll see this not only in our home renovations, but in the various shop and café fit outs we’ve completed across the Coffs Coast. What other creative processes do you enjoy outside of work? Creativity flows into so many different areas of our life. From renovating our own homes to shaping surfboards, building toys and BMX jumps for the kids, gardening, playing guitar, cooking, the list goes on we get creative with everything! hat was it that made you choose Marcus from Designer Living Kitchens to design and build your dream kitchen? When we met Marcus, it was clear he had many years of experience and was passionate about designing kitchens. We saw some kitchens that he had designed, and they looked really well thought out and well executed. We wanted a kitchen that had clean lines and a simple layout, with a big walk-in pantry with extra bench space running behind to store appliances etc. Marcus had some great practical suggestions for our kitchen, such as the wingline pantry door that looks just like a normal cupboard door, but reveals the full pantry behind and is easy to walk through once it's open.

are building or renovating their homes to apply for a single payment of $25,000. This program is offered for construction contracts that are entered between 4th June 2020 and 31st December 2020 for a new home build, where the property value does not exceed $750k. Many people who meet the criteria could also be eligible to access the grant for a knockdown rebuild or significant renovation up to $750K. Plus, the grant can be given in

addition to the First Home Owners Grant. “This government grant program has seen us welcome triple the enquiry and triple the sales from people who had previously been considering a build, but had lost a bit of confidence due to the circumstances surrounding the pandemic. “With the extra $25K, we’ve seen first home buyers, downsizers, people with knock-down rebuilds and growing families regain confidence and seriously consider taking up this opportunity that most likely won’t be repeated for some time,” shared Rick. “Lots of first home buyers are jumping at this chance to get into the market, with a great leg up from the government seeing them apply for both the HomeBuilder

ey Martin. How did you come to call the Coffs Coast home? I was living on the Tweed Coast at Cabarita Beach and on one of my surfing adventures, I discovered the fabulous point break at Arrawarra. I began to visit the area more regularly after that, and one day I got chatting with a local beach fisherman and ended up renting his beachfront house opposite the point break. I moved my business with me and happily lived there for several years. When and why did you start your business? I was employed as a diversional therapist by the Uniting church in Kingscliff, when I woke up to the fact that I needed to step up and challenge myself by starting my own business. I began one of the first wheelie bin cleaning businesses in that area in early 1998, and from there I evolved into a house and building washing specialist. It wasn't long before I began to take on large strata complexes and resorts. What services do you offer? I now specialise in external cleaning and washing of residential homes, large strata complexes and commercial premises. I also offer cleaning of driveways, pathways, large car parking areas, the underside of verandah, carport, patio roofs and retainer walls,
