CORFE WESTS TIGERS MEDIA MANAGER BROCK CORFE IS AN EX COFFS COAST LOCAL WHO HAS BUILT HIMSELF AN AMAZINGLY

SUCCESSFUL CAREER IN SPORTS MEDIA. CURRENTLY WORKING AS WESTS TIGERS MEDIA MANAGER, FOCUS GRABBED A SEAT ON THE TEAM BUS TO FIND OUT MORE.

W

hat is your connection with the Coffs Coast? I was born and raised in the Coffs Harbour region. I grew up on a farm in Brooklana (near Ulong) and also lived in Coffs Harbour itself throughout my teenage years. I attended Ulong Primary School and St Augustine’s before completing my HSC in 2007 at John Paul College. I left Coffs Harbour when I was 18 years old and moved to Canberra for university. The majority of my family still lives in Coffs, so I try to get back as often as I can. Can you tell us a bit about your current role at Wests Tigers? My job title at Wests Tigers is Media Manager, which means that I’m the first point of call for media when they want to speak to a player, coach or club official. I’m also responsible for making sure the club meets its expectations from the NRL for media access each week. I organise three press conferences leading in to each game and work hard to promote ticket and membership sales. Another part of my role is contributing to the Club’s website - weststigers.com.au - with news 8 coffs coast focus.

stories, videos and photography. How did you get a start at the club? I completed a Bachelor of Sports Media at the University of Canberra, which was a three-year course. From there, I worked at a numerous sporting organisations, most notably the ACT Brumbies and Sydney Sixers, in parttime and internship roles. My “foot in the door” moment came in January 2013 when I picked up a full-time role at Wests Tigers as their Social Media Coordinator. I moved into the Media Manager role at the end of my first year at the Club, so this year will be my fourth season with the team. Do you have a background and love of the game? Rugby League has always been a passion of mine and is by far my favourite sport. I started playing Rugby League when I was five years old with the Orara Valley Tomahawks and continued all the way through to Under 18s with the Axemen. Dad got me playing footy as a youngster, and both he and Mum spent plenty of time

taking me to training and the games every week. I’m really thankful for them getting me involved in the sport - it’s a great way for kids to make new friends and stay active. Do you attend all their matches? Yes, I attend all Wests Tigers matches both home and away. I get to travel to some pretty cool places each year like Auckland, Townsville, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Melbourne. It definitely limits my weekends during the season, but I’m not complaining! Who do you think is a current player at the club with the x factor? I think a player who deserves more of a rap than he gets is Sauaso Sue. The guy is a machine, and I think he is in for an even bigger season this year. Look out for him to make a big impact in 2016. What do you love most about your job? Working in Rugby League is a dream job for me. It’s something that has always been a passion of mine, and I love going to work each day. Every day is different and we have a really great group of players and staff at

the Club. What advice would you give someone looking to get a start in the industry? My advice would be to do as many internships as you can and build relationships with people in your field. You’ve got to be prepared to put the extra hours in - even if it’s unpaid - to get a foot in the door. Do you have a great story from your time working at the club that you would like to share? I would say that one of my favourite stories from my time at the club is a very recent one. Each year the club visits a country area for the NRL’s Community Carnival, and this season Coffs Harbour came up for us! We visited around 50 schools in the area, and it was great to show some of the players around my home town. We even managed to go for a swim at the beautiful Scotts Head beach after visiting the primary school. What are your plans for the future? I’d love to continue working in sport for as long as possible - in what role, I’m not entirely sure just yet, but I’m really enjoying my job at the moment! I would love to live in Coffs Harbour again one day, but who knows! Thanks Brock.

hat is your connection with the Coffs Coast? I was born in the old Coffs Harbour Base Hospital; I’m a Gumbaynggirr and Bundjalung Young man. Coffs is my place of birth, and Sawtell is where I’ve done all my growing up. My mum and dad bought me, my oldest brother and sister up close to the salt water and always around Rugby League. Can you tell us a bit about your current job? I’m the Indigenous Australians’ Student Support Officer at Southern Cross University in the Indigenous Australian Student Services Team. I pretty much support all Indigenous students studying bridging courses, Bachelor courses and any other higher education degrees. I also have a major role with AIME (Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience) on campus, where I present and inspire our Indigenous high school students to aim to complete their Year 12, and we’ll walk with them along their journey, but mostly to instil into the young men and women that Indigenous Equals Success. What do you hope to achieve in this role? My goal is simple here at SCU: to give each and every Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander student the best opportunity of completing their study, to eventually become our next Indigenous leader in nursing or midwifery, law, psychology, teaching or anything that they desire. Also, making aware to the wider community “what it takes to be a UNI student” and all we have to offer. Have you seen an increase in Indigenous kids becoming interested in getting degrees and furthering their training over recent years? 10 coffs coast focus.

Yes, massive increases; it’s so rewarding for me. To work with Indigenous Students (with AIME) coming on to campus, seeing them apply for university as a life pathway to give them opportunities or to make their family proud is something that I work hard to support. In the four years I have been at Southern Cross University, I have seen increases in both locals and the wider community, which is great. Why do you think this is? I think now more than ever our Indigenous Mob is seeking further education. I feel that closing the gap has been a major factor in having Indigenous people, young and old, interested - because it can help close the gap of our life expectancy. Then you have those who have a passion to learn, the passion to lead, to create opportunities and pathways. What kind of support is out there for the younger generation to help them transition form secondary school to tertiary studies? There’s a lot of support, and it first starts within the schools, because each school has a careers adviser. The first stepis doing units in school to receive an ATAR/OP to get into uni; getting each student interested is another step. Looking at pathways (courses they’re interested in) they wish pursue. Then applying for an early entry, in SCU’s case STAR, which allows each student to receive an offer at the end or start of the year. The university also does school visits, information days and much more. You had a successful football career playing in the NRL; can you tell us a bit about that? My goal as a young man was to play first

grade Rugby League, and that was it for me - nothing else mattered. Although after getting down to the big smoke (Sydney), I realised it was going to be harder than I thought. My career started at the Wests Tigers, where I began training with the first grade squad at a young age and also managed a few trials. That led me to Souths Sydney Rabbitohs, where I managed to strike a first grade debut as halfback, one of the many halfbacks since they come back into the comp. All my dreams were met the night I played Penrith Panthers in 2003, as a young, blondheaded, skinny fella ... ha ha; it was a good night that night. And you’re also stepping up to be captain coach at Bello this year. I coached Bello back in 2008 and relocated from Canberra with my family. So, there was a feeling of unfinished business that was brewing up ... My cousin, Brad Hart, and I decided to take the co-coaching job on board and help the club out. Belingen Valley/Dorrigo Magpies have always had massive hearts. When they’re short of players, they always field an outfit throughout the year. With new players, I’m passionate about bringing structure to the club and most of all, to have a fun filled year ... What is the One Deadly Step programme? The One Deadly Step progamme is an event supported by the NRL, instigating communities to take One Deadly Step to Closing The Gap. Coffs Harbour this year are taking it and running with it by getting Aboriginal staff members from various workplaces to rally together to provide an event the whole community can be involved in and benefit from. Many staff will be involved in the 17

different health check stations: Galambila with the Ready Mob team, Mid North Coast Local Health District, NSW Government Health, Medicare Local are just some that have put together comprehensive chronical disease health screenings and the opportunity to find out what’s available locally to support your health. Rugby League stars will be attending and running training sessions for our future generation. All in all, the day will be One Deadly Day. How did you become involved? Because the NRL are in support of the day, the community came together and decided that we should get our local Group 2 coaches out there and put them on the invitation to exploit the day and enable interest from youth and community. Brad Hart, Clark Webb, Cameron Blair, Ronald Gordon and I were all asked to attend the day and help with the Rugby League sessions. What is the goal of the programme? The Goal is for community to come together, Close The Gap with getting your regular checks, and staying healthy through your local services. Instigating positive change through leadership and role modelling is important: showing our youth that it’s OK to be healthy, it’s OK to get regular health checks, it’s OK to be active on a regular basis. What are your plans for the future? At the moment my future plans are to watch my kids grow to be the best that they can be; 2016 is a big year for me and my little family. But in regards to work and football, I’ll continue to support and inspire those who require guidance and with Footy, make it through 2016 with Bellingen Valley/Dorrigo Magpies, and shock a few sides ha ha! Thanks Troy.

an you tell us about where you’re from originally? From Somalia, which is in East Africa. What is Somalia like as a place? Somalia is an amazing country with great buildings and scenery (Google it) that is full of wealth, with natural resources as well as oil. Unfortunately, Civil War destroyed everything. Right now, the country is growing and recovering at a rapid pace and is much safer. How did you come to live in Coffs? I moved from Melbourne in February last year to play basketball for the Brisbane Spartans in The South East Australian Basketball League, which is Australia's Premier 12 coffs coast focus.

Winter Basketball League. Then I stayed in Brisbane ‘til September last year and moved to Coffs Harbour. I began working with the Coffs Harbour Basketball Association to try to help develop the hard working country kids and also run my own academy, called "Hard Knockz Academy”, for the kids who want to be beasts. What is your current role, and how are you helping kids learn more about the sport? I run the Hard Knockz Academy to help

develop ball handling, shooting, plus all the other skills, and this helps with mental toughness. It's open to all kids, and I train them pretty hard so they can better themselves. When did you start playing basketball? I started playing ball at 12 and learned pretty quickly - always asking questions and training about eight hours a day, before school at 5:30am, during school, after school, and then with my team. When did you realise that you had talent and skills?

When I made my first rep team and I noticed I had speed and then skills that I learned playing on the streets of Heidelberg Heights against older people. In Melbourne? The streets of Heidelberg are in Melbourne, Victoria, where I learned to play ball, playing outdoors at the local primary school. After school and weekends we played until sunset. It was very tough, and we had a “no blood no foul” rule. What do you love most about the game? I love the competition, the hard work which is fun to me and also crossing people up. You spent time playing for Melbourne Tigers and Brisbane Spartans; can you tell us about those experiences?

focusinterview.

Playing with Melbourne Tigers was amazing. I learned a lot from guys like Dmack, Anstey, Rashad Tucker, Corey Williams and Julius Hodge, Matt Burston and my favourite, coach Al Westover. What is the training regime like? I go to the gym about three times a week and also workout on the basketball court about four times a week, to stay sharp. Weekends usually include a beach session with sprints and parachute workout. I try to do something every day. No days off! You are also the captain of the Somali National Team. Do you travel back to Somalia often, and how is the level of playing there? No, we don't actually go back to Somalia; we meet about four days before tournaments at the location of the tournament and train. We don't have the funds to travel back, and I help pay my way with some support from the Somali community in Melbourne. Is it an honour to be the captain of your nation’s team? The position of captain, for my country is a great responsibility and a great honour, one that I take very seriously. What makes a good captain? The role of captain has its challenges, because you’re dealing with a lot of egos and personalities, and it requires a lot of patience and listening. You must be able to solve conflict on the fly and keep everyone on the same page. On top of all that, you can’t take things people say personally and need to try not to be too sensitive. Lead by example: that’s what Nathan Buckley told me at my time with Collingwood F.C, right before I played for my national team in 2014. Where around the world do the rest of

the Somali team come from? Most of my teammates live in Canada and America. They play for colleges and teams over there. h One must stretc What is your n ai m a lot to re favourite memory to xi ble and loose fle ere from playing Th . es ri ju in prevent , th basketball? is also the ice ba a ith w My first NBL te ha I ch hi w e on s it’ t game, the very first passion, bu ry ve co re st possession I crossed of the be up and scored on a guy methods . ” who later became like a brother to me. I think teamwork is very important, but you still have to have an individual’s work ethic. That way everyone improves individually, hence makes the team better collectively. You need to be selfless and pass on a good shot for a better shot - also to be in sync offensively and defensively. What advice would you give to young players who want to make it to the top? I'd tell any individual who wants to be a professional athlete to work harder than the hard working, sacrifice going out with friends but instead work out, be persistent every day, have faith in yourself and in a higher power, and you will be successful. SMITH TRUDY SMITH IS A POPULAR ARTIST WITH A STRONG CONNECTION TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY AND ENVIRONMENT. FOCUS WENT ALONG TO HER STUDIO TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT HER LATEST PROJECTS.

W

hat is your connection to the Coffs Coast? My connection to the Coffs Coast goes right back to 18 months old; growing up with my twin sister, Judy, and three other sisters, going to Orara School and then marrying a fellow local, Alan Smith. I have found it very easy to connect with the Coffs community through my art, as we became known as the “Smith Family Face Painting Team”, working around Coffs for many years with the help of my two daughters, Bonnie and Meeka. Over the years I have been reinventing myself and expanding my art projects to encompass teaching art, being commissioned for public artworks like the Hospital and private artworks, as well as parties and festivals. Could you briefly describe how you became involved in art? I have always been creative, but I really literally just fell into it. I have really just learnt and developed my style over the years. There were a few people that encouraged me, my parents and my nan Connie Laverty from Taylors Arm always believed in my talent, she entered a sketch that I did for pop and her, the exhibition was held at the local community hall, the sketch was of the iconic Pub with no beer, I received first prize, nan was ecstatic. I also have a close friend that I grew up with, Cherie Windows, and her and my husband have both encouraged me. Cherie‘s boss at the time asked if I would paint a mural in his bathroom, and this was so well

What have been some of the favourite works you’ve created? I have many favourite works that I have been involved in. The large commission murals located at our local Coffs Harbour Hospital is one. I have been told that they deliver a sense of calmness to patients and parents. Others murals include the Coffs C.ex, motels, Bishop Druitt College, Mexican restaurants, Park Beach Shopping Centre, Just Be Nice Café, some private homes and wedding portraits. It’s a privilege when clients commission me to paint portraits of themselves, children or their pets. Clients trust me to design a unique piece of art work for them, and what I love is when clients see their artwork for the first time and they get emotional. As an artist, it is so satisfying when I can deliver what they really want. What are your plans for the future? To keep re-inventing myself and creating and designing artwork. I am keen to continue down the line of commercial work with the assistance of digital printing on to many different surfaces like vinyl, that could be used for large corporate billboard signs, cars, or even wheelie bins. At the end of the day, the choices are endless. I will continue my face painting and body art, as this has a strong standing in our community and is well established. Anita Kleyn NEWCASTLE PERMANENT BUILDING SOCIETY WELCOMES NEW HOME LENDER: ANITA KLEYN REJOINS THE COFFS COMMUNITY AS NEWCASTLE PERMANENT’S NEW LOCAL HOME LOAN EXPERT.

A

nita comes from managing Newcastle Permanent’s Grafton branch and home lending, and joins the well-established branch team in Coffs led by Branch Manager Erica Farag. The branch, which celebrated its 10th anniversary, has been part of the local community’s Give Me Five for Kids campaigns since 2011 and hosted four Newcastle Permanent’s Cinema Under the Stars events. Erica and her team of Kylie, Kym, Jessica, Keri and Peta provide friendly every day banking support to Newcastle Permanent customers in the convenient Park Beach Plaza branch. Anita is based in the branch as well, but is also available to meet customers in their homes. What can Anita offer Coffs Harbour home buyers? With more than 20 years of experience in financial services, Anita can help families achieve their home ownership dream. Rejoining the Coffs Harbour community after five years living in Grafton working

as Newcastle Permanent’s Branch Lending Manager, she is excited to return home and help build the local community. “I really enjoy working with families to figure out the best way for them to achieve one of life’s big milestones - buying a home that will be the centre of so many memories and special occasions,” she said. “I’m fortunate to work with Erica and the exceptional branch team to make home buying a straightforward and pleasant experience for our customers, and I’m confident that we offer some of the best home loan products on the market,” Anita added. Why choose Newcastle Permanent? Newcastle Permanent is one of the most awarded home lending financial institutions in Australia, having recently taken the Best Mutual Lender in the 2016 Australian Lending Awards, and Money magazine’s 2015 Home Lender of the Year, Personal Lender of the Year and Building Society of the Year awards. “The Coffs Harbour community warmly welcomed Newcastle Permanent when we opened here in 2006, when customers were

finally given a strong, competitive alternative to the major banks, which also put the community before its profits,” Anita said. “One of the key differences for our customers is offering a day to day relationship that’s personal, attentive and knowledgable we can help take care of all of their personal banking needs in one place and treat our customers as real human beings and members of our own community, not just a number.” Here for the Coffs Harbour community ... Newcastle Permanent is here for good. As a customer-owned building society, we have no shareholders to pay. Instead, we return our profits to our customers and the regional communities we operate in through better interest rates, competitive fees and financial

support through our community involvement and extensive sponsorship programme. Our Community Support Programme helps children and their families to lead healthy, active and happy lives by investing more than $1.5 million every year in children’s education, sport and community events. In its fourth year, Newcastle Permanent’s Cinema Under the Stars attracted 3,500 people to Coffs Harbour Showground this February. “This year’s Newcastle Permanent Cinema Under the Stars in Coffs Harbour was a fantastic way for me to reconnect with the local community, which continues to support the events year after year,” Anita said.

If any more boxes arrive at Love & Kisses, they’re going to start bursting out the front door! This week they’ve received eight huge cartons of those lovely soft little Slumbies slippers, in lots of great new patterns and colours. The cosy new winter styles will be perfect for Mother’s Day - they’re the comfiest things you could ever put on your feet. They weigh almost nothing, so they’re perfect to pack for travelling, and they’re machine washable - it doesn’t get better than that! And ... for the first time ever ... you’ll find some kids’ sizes too, as cute as, in camo patterns. Judy says the things she had the most fun buying at the recent trade fairs are dozens of little handbags - some fun, some cute, some smart, some plain, some painted, in every colour imagineable, and all under $20. Definitely worth a look. And while you’re there, check out the new Infinity Bracelets in Italian Napa Leather with slide on charms - they’re the hot new thing. When you need a gift or you, or for someone you love, at a price that will make you happy, Love & Kisses is definitely the first place to go.

PLAZA

CAR WASH & DETAILING

Although we live in a most beautiful environment here on the Coffs Coast with access to many stunning beaches, it is not so good for our cars. FOCUS spoke with Plaza Car Wash and Detailing to find out how we can care for our cars here on the Coffs Coast. Why should I wash my car? As we live on the coast, your car has excessive exposure to salt. The salt, as well as being in the air, is on the road, and as a result it ends up coating your car. Salt (NaCI) is a highly reactive substance that silently works away on any surface. Rainwater won’t necessarily remove the salt, but washing with soap will. How often should I wash my car? It is recommended that you wash you car weekly due to the amount of salt that it comes into contact with. We recommend that twice a month you drive through our Rainbow Wash and Dry, which removes the salt from the car, including underneath the car. On the alternate weeks you can use our self-service bays and rinse your car with high pressure soap and water. I hate washing my car; how can I avoid it? Washing your car is not a chore at Plaza Car Wash and Detailing. Our automatic washes only take between six and eight minutes. You don’t

18 coffs coast focus.

have to drag the hose out, and put it away or find the bucket, soap and sponge, that has by now built up a small supply of sand and grit which creates beautiful swirl marks on your car duco as you wash. Washing at the Plaza Car Wash is a breeze. Our self-service bays have high-pressure hoses and long handled foaming brushes made from pure hogs’ hair. If I can’t wash my car, how can you assist? If washing your car is no longer possible, we will do it for you. Our attendants are on duty from 9am until 3pm daily. We can guide you through the automatic wash, or do it for you. If you would like it hand washed, then call us to book it in for a convenient time that suits you. Alternatively, if your car needs a little more attention, then book it in for a Mini or Full Detail. If the interior of your car is in desperate need of a thorough clean, but you can manage the exterior in our automatic wash, then book it in for an Interior Detail.

Is salt the only substance destroying the duco of my car? No, as well as salt, bird and bat droppings, tree sap and mould are also quietly eating away at the paint on your car. These need to be removed as soon as possible. In some cases when they are left to bake in the sun, they becomes difficult to remove. We have the skills and equipment to remove these substances without harsh scrubbing. Does my car need polishing? Yes. Have you ever noticed, when washing your car with a sponge that it doesn’t glide over the car? If this happens to you, then you need a polish. Nasty substances, like bird droppings and sap, stick better to unpolished paint. Wax and polish is applied automatically during our

Rainbow Wash or Rainbow Wash and Dry. Alternatively, you can book your car in to have it hand polished. Where can I get more information? Find us on Facebook www.facebook.com/ plazacarwash to see videos of how Plaza Car Wash works, or call us on 6658 0199. Plaza Car Wash and Detailing is open from 7am to 9pm, seven days a week. Customers who use our automatic washes receive our loyalty card that entitles them to a free Rainbow Wash and Dry after six washes and VIP membership. That’s a 15% discount. If you are having a fundraiser, please contact Plaza Car Wash on 6658 0199 or info@ plazacarwash.com.au and we will be happy to supply a car wash package for your event.

hat brought you to the Coffs Coast, as I detect an accent? I came from Switzerland and travelled three years around the world before settling in Australia quite some time ago. I also lived in many places along the coast, but find this region by far the best for many reasons, such as the sub-tropical climate. This region has the least amount of weather change and no humidity (qualified by the CSIRO). I also love the cruisey, laid back lifestyle and the sense of community. I have been living in Coffs Harbour for the past 15 years. My success as a parent has echoed through my two children, who excel as young adults. When Brian Hopwood introduced me to Pearl, I immediately fell in love. Tell us a bit about “Pearl” ... Imagine a secluded, captivating natural environment, away from the hassle and bustle yet only minutes to all amenities, where you could come home to unwind after a hard day’s work. ow long have you worked as a bartender? Like many, I started as a dishy/bar back. I was the one stocking the fridges, replacing ice, cleaning toilets. I took a liking to the bar life when I was 18 and slowly climbed up the ladder. I was 19 before I was working as a bartender. Can you briefly describe a typical routine for a shift? A typical routine starts with a good breakky. That’s vital. But it usually involves cruising in one hour or so before service to prep up your mixes/ juices/booze. The routine is always different for each bar you work at. For example, at The Spare Room the afternoons are quite chilled. This is a good time to interact with your customers, as you have the time to have a yarn. Come 6 or 7, you get a lot of dinner traffic, which usually involves predominately wine and beer. From 9 ‘til midnight is usually peak hour on the bar. Where have some of the places you have worked? I learnt the ropes at a bar in Coffs Harbour called Old Johns. I spent around 18 months working in there before heading to Europe for 10 months. I did most of the major cities: Barcelona, Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Dublin, Edinburgh then spent six months in London. I spent most of my time on the other side of the bar drinking, which I think is vital in any bartender’s experience. When I came back to It’s such a fun y Australia, I lived in Sydney lifestyle . You’re always going to find negatives with whatever it is you're doing. The only one I can think of is probably not being able to attend events on weekends. But insead of spending money, you're putting it in the bank. Can you tell us an interesting story or anecdote from your time behind the bar? There are always some interesting things happening in the wee hours of the morning, when copious amounts of alcohol are consumed. I'm not sure if most of them are suited to a coastal living magazine. On one of my first shifts behind a bar, I had a shocker. I was encouraged to taste everything that I made, which I think is crucial. Just don't get carried away and make sure it's just a taste. After a few too many "tastes", I was making a cocktail that had a number of blueberries as a garnish. As I handed it over, I placed it on the edge of a stack of napkins. Needless to say, the drink with all its blueberries stained this poor girl’s brand new outfit from the dress to the shoes. Don't work behind a bar after

too many drinks. What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about a career as a bartender? Do it. It's such a fun lifestyle. No early wake ups; you can literally get a job anywhere in the world. It's really rewarding seeing people enjoying themselves in an environment that you've helped create. Drink at good bars as much as possible. Some say the apprenticeship of a bartender is done on the other side of the bar. Don't drink at bad bars. Travel. What sort of training is required to be a bartender? You can do formal training courses. Personally, I've never done anything like that. I think if you're working with bartenders who know their stuff, that's the best training you can get. Just listen. There's a lot more to it than meets the eye. If you're at a good bar, get chatting to the bar staff. They will pass on a lot of knowledge. There is much to tap into and such a diverse range of booze. Thanks Toby. coffs coast focus. 21

FESTIVALS • BASS MUSIC • TECHNOLOGY

Hailing from New Zealand, based in Melbourne, Opiuo creates a sonic palette that delivers a Funkadelic, Glitch-hop, G-funk roller coaster ride that oozes with pure fun. Recently, Nicci Seccombe sat down with Opiuo to talk about festivals, bass music culture, and the technology that is driving his sets.

W

here did you grow up? In the countryside at the top of the South Island, New Zealand. How did you get into music? My parents used to have parties and festivals on their land from when I was super young. Being a little kid running around, I was exposed to the early days of NZ electronic music. How would you describe your style of music? Do you have one? Funkadelic bass music is a broad term I fully support. What kit do you use/what instruments do you play? I produce on logic and rock a tonne of soft synths plus my hardware Access Virus and Moog Voyager get a lot of work. I've played the drums most of my years growing up. Live, I use drum machines, keyboards, laptops. What are you listening to now that’s inspiring you to make music? Right this second I'm listening to some Maribou State. These guys are inspiring as. Plus, I love the new booty shaking bassy broken house that's coming out. I like turning inspiration from music quite different to my own into something new. When you travel, do you produce tracks? Or are you a studio dweller? I'm a studio guy. I need my speakers and the lack of distraction to get anything proper done. I sometimes wish I could write on the road though. When it comes to your solo work as Opiuo and The Opiuo Band, how much crossover

is there? There's some crossover for sure, as we play a bunch of the same music, but it's performed in two very different ways. So I guess on paper it might look similar, but I think the end product is very different, which I love. A couple of my favorite Opiuo tracks include the Good Thymes remix and Robo Booty. What are some of your own favorites? Oh wow, all of them ha ha. If I had to pick one that's released, it'd probably be Quack Fat. What's the craziest gig you've ever played? Atop a giant structure breathing fire and freaks in the middle of the desert at Burning Man in front of tens of thousands raving crazies. Where do you like to play the most? So many places, I wouldn't know where to start. I played in 21 countries last year alone. What can we expect at your 2016 East Coast Tour? S*@tloads of brand new music, plus a dope as brand new light show, all mashed together into one down right dancing, funkin, night long party of mega proportions from the depths of bass heavy joy town. Thanks Opiuo.

Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular comic operetta, The Pirates of Penzance, is a delightfully funny tale of a band of tender-hearted pirates. Mistakenly apprenticed to a pirate (instead of a pilot) by his nursemaid Ruth at the age of eight, the handsome Frederic is now twenty-one and, though quite fond of the group of fun-loving pirates, chooses to abandon his profession and return to respectability, dedicating himself instead to the pirates’ eradication. Shortly after leaving them, he encounters a gaggle of beautiful maidens (the eldest, Mabel, steals his heart) and their father, the eccentric Major-General. They narrowly escape being captured by the pirates themselves before escaping on the false premise that the Major-General is an orphan: a fact these tender-hearted pirates cannot help but take into account, given the fact that they are orphans themselves and feel sorry for him. Just as Frederic is ready to lead a band of lily-livered policemen to take out the Pirate King and his men, a secret is uncovered that will change his fate forever, but, naturally, all comes out right in the end.

PIRATES OF PENZANCE

Beloved since its premiere in 1879, The Pirates of Penzance (or The Slave of Duty) is a delightful farce of a classic that will appeal to all.

ver the various events since January 2015 through to the Race Day on Sunday 10th January, the committee raised over $100,000 - bringing a total of over $530,000 for the better health of the local women of the Coffs Coast community. CHPSPT chairperson, Tanya Johnson said, “We were supporting six wonderful beneficiaries this year, which will initiate new health services and better assist local women in our area. This enormous achievement would not be possible without the continued support of the Coffs Coast community and our truly generous sponsors and donators.” CHPSPT adage of “Covering all the bases of local women’s health” was viewed throughout the community, with the town turning PINK, with many prominent businesses involved in turning pink that weekend - all with a clear understanding of the valuable work this committee does to raise more funds, support and resources for our local women. When the event originally started in 2007, it was aimed at raising funds for Breast Cancer research, but the rapid growth and huge support of the Pink Silks Ladies Day has now evolved into a registered charity committed to raising awareness and funds for local women

Certainly it will be a night to dress up and dust off your dancing shoes. Keep an eye on the Facebook page or website - final details and tickets are expected to be available mid April. The Pink Silks committee is now inviting local women’s organisations and services to apply for funding for the upcoming year. They are also currently in negotiations to undertake a major project - hopefully to achieve a service that will benefit many members and age groups in the local community. While details are still under wraps, it is hoped that a special announcement can be made in the very near future. How did SUPPLY come to be? Todd had been working as a barista at a number of local cafés and became increasingly aware that there was a inquisitive and educated coffee market emerging. People with a passion for good coffee didn’t want to just enjoy their coffee - they wanted to know about it. Where are the beans sourced? What are their characteristics? What is the roasting process? FACTS

A GOOD HAIRCUT IS REALLY EMPOWERING.

I

t can not only turn any bad hair day into the best one ever, but your new added layers or bangs can completely sky rocket your self-confidence, leaving you feeling like you can take on the world for weeks to come. The big chop seems all the rage during the warmer months, but whether you’re thinking about a pixie or you’re just trying to take a few inches off your locks, there’s a thing or two you should know about cutting your hair. Below are six little known facts about cutting your hair, and some tips to help you get the best out of your hair. 1. Cutting your hair more often doesn’t make it grow faster: getting rid of the ends of your hair doesn’t directly affect hair growth. Trimming simply keeps hair healthier as it grows, by cutting off the split ends so that they stay intact, instead of fraying and breaking off quicker than your hair actually grows. Lauren explains, “Millimeter trims - I like to call micro trims - make a huge difference when trying to grow your hair.” 2. Layer accordingly: when cutting your hair, you should layer it according to your hair texture. Tighter curls work best with layers that aren’t perfectly even, while straighter hair works best with more even layers. However, don’t look past the very fashionable solid cut, at that LOB (long bob) length. 3. Love an (on-the-go) wash and wear hairstyle:

MICHAEL HAS RECENTLY JOINED THE PALMS PHARMACY AND HAS BEEN A PHARMACIST IN THE COFFS COAST REGION FOR THE PAST TEN YEARS, WORKING AT GOOD PRICE PHARMACY AND MANAGING WOOLGOOLGA AMCAL PHARMACY.

it’s important to let your stylists know how you style at home, so that they can address this and cut accordingly. In most cases, wash and wear styles are best cut dry. 4. All bangs aren’t cut equally: if you’re thinking about getting bangs (fringe), know what works best for your face and for your hair texture. Long, wispy bangs usually work best for a long face or high forehead, while softer, shorter bangs work best to frame a round face. However, if you have a dreaded cowlick, remember - is it worth all that work! 5. Short hair takes work: cutting off your hair doesn’t mean less trips to the salon. To keep it maintained, shorter cuts usually require more frequent trips to the salon to keep the shape and style fresh. But don’t despair - you’ll find it’s outweighed by the ease of styling it at home. 6. Bring options: sure, we’ve all got our Pinterest boards full of haircut inspiration, but make sure you bring multiple options. When you get to the salon, your stylist may explain that a certain cut won’t work with your texture, or that it will actually require much more work. So keep an open mind and trust the stylists, because that is what they are trained to do. Be brave, embrace a new you and come and speak to one of the Premier Stylists at Living Doll today. Michael and his team are continuously striving to deliver a holistic approach to all his patients’ healthcare needs. He enjoys building relationships with the community and, in the lead up to this winter season, wants to help educate the community about influenza (commonly known as “The Flu”). With Flu season on its way, it’s a good time to take a look at four of the most common misconceptions about influenza. Pharmacist Michael’s Top Four Flu Myths! • Influenza is Not Serious Unfortunately, it can be. Influenza is highly contagious and, in some cases, potentially

deadly. Often, even healthy young people can take weeks to fully recover from the illness. Flu sufferers with pre-existing illnesses have a 40% increased chance of serious complication or even death due to influenza. • Vaccination can cause the Flu. Myth! Australian influenza vaccines do not contain live viruses, so it is not possible for them to cause the flu. • I was vaccinated last year, so I should be fine for this year. False! The influenza vaccination is required annually. Most strains of the virus in the community change from year to year as they evolve. Ensure you are vaccinated yearly to provide maximum protection. • Sick people shouldn’t get the flu shot. Think again! If you have a minor illness without a fever, vaccination is fine and is especially recommended if you have a chronic illness.

I’m very exited to present the research and work of Julie Wiebe, BSc, MPT, who has over nineteen years of clinical experience in both Sports Medicine and Women’s Health in the form of two workshops, part 1 and 2. Many pelvic floor problems and dysfunction occur due to: • Holding or bracing our abdominals too much • Incorrect breathing • Poor posture • Girls going through puberty • Pregnancy • Menopause The aim of both workshops is to: • Teach your pelvic floor how to deal with pressure brought on by a cough, sneeze or a jump • Teach your pelvic floor to bounce! Your poor feet! The objective of the workshops is to help you realise how important your feet are in relation to quality of life and the impact they can have on your whole body. Workshop 1 aims to release, stretch and strengthen the intrinsic muscles of your feet to manage or prevent a number of foot conditions from ever happening. Workshop 2 will then take you through harder methods of release and exercise once you have prepared your feet from workshop 1. Simulation is not just about the technology of the manikins or equipment; simulation provides the stimulation for a conversation, resulting in an educational experience involving extensive reflective learning. Testing new facilities, new beds or new monitoring equipment ensures that healthcare is safer for patients. What are your hopes for the future of the centre? I hope the centre continues to grow and influence the care and outcomes for patients throughout the Mid North Coast. I hope it continues to provide an environment that allows participants the opportunity to make mistakes, learn from them and have experiences that will assist them to provide high quality, evidence-based practice when caring for patients and clients. o Leane, tell me about the Thank You for Your Service Campaign ... The Veterans Centre Mid North Coast, or VCMNC, looked at ways we could support the services provided by the various local RSL sub branches. After some discussion, we came up with the idea of how the community can show their gratitude to all those ex service and serving members who have served our nation. Background for the campaign ... With the Thank You for Your Service campaign, we want to show the men and women from the past and present, who served in our Defence Forces, that we will always have their backs. Today, with multiple deployments both combat related and aid to cival communities around the world, many ex-service members are feeling the effects of their service, with injuries that are both seen and unseen. It is reported that 20% of Defence personnel are facing issues with mental health problems, which includes experiencing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety and many other serious issues. Ride for Country Kids

A team of riders from local company Infracraft took part in this week’s Royal Farwest Ride For Country Kids. With support from staff, local residents and local businesses they raised $16,000 towards the final result of over $500,000 in funds raised for the charity.

T

he ride, which was a gruelling 380km ride over 3 days, started last Sunday in Port Macquarie and took the riders on a spectacular tour of the mid North Coast region of NSW, riding on some of Australia’s most scenic cycling roads. The riders passed through Kempsey, Macksville, Bowraville, Nambucca Heads and Bellingen, where they hosted community dinners and met with children and families from local schools and communities before finishing in Coffs Harbour on Tuesday. Infracraft were invited to participate by

FDC Constructions, a Sydney based client of the company who are major sponsors of the event. Infracraft took up the challenge, with 5 riders joining the total of 108 participants in the fundraising adventure. All net proceeds raised from the charity ride will be directed to supporting the health and wellbeing of country kids, providing essential support across a range of areas including child development and learning, speech and communication, mental health, autism spectrum disorders and oral health.

MEN’S AND LADIES’ INSPIRATIONAL FITNESS INTERVIEW

DANIELTEMPEST 30 YEAR OLD PERSONAL TRAINER, GROUP EXERCISE I N S T R U C T O R A N D C O F F S C O AS T C A M P U S M A N A G E R O F THE AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF PERSONAL TRAINERS.

Thank you for such a positive response to last month’s story about our amazing Adrian. This month we are catching up with and profiling the local Personal Trainer who educates the new crop of Personal Trainers, to hear his inspiring story.

M

eet Daniel Tempest; he is the man charged with the responsibility of educating the next generation of Personal Trainers here on the Coffs Coast. Dan is the Campus Manager for the local arm of The Australian Institute of Personal Trainers, where those interested in becoming a Personal Trainer learn how to be one in a real gym, with real experiences instead of only online or in a lecture theatre. Dan, where did you grow up and go to school? I am originally from the Central Coast, but when I was 10 years old, my family moved to Bellingen, where I attended Bellingen Primary and High School. Why did you become a Personal Trainer? Having sport integrated into my whole life, I have always been linked to training and practising a fit and healthy lifestyle. It was only natural that I would gravitate to the industry. Personal training has provided me the perfect platform to share my passion for health and fitness with the Coffs Coast community and provided me different roles in sport. I liked the idea of putting together programmes and seeing my clients prosper from them. What’s the most exciting thing you’ve done so far as a Personal Trainer? During 2015 I spent three months in Baltimore, USA, completing an internship at the Under Armour Performance Centre, learning from elite trainers and athletes in all facets of health and fitness in a state of the art gym. During my time there, we coached workouts to over 60 wounded warriors (returned service veterans) and a range of other specialist groups at the Baltimore Ravens practice facility.

48 coffs coast focus.

Why did you want to teach others how to become a successful Personal Trainer? During my internship, our mentor, Reed, was always so enthusiastic and passionate; it really showed me my “why” as a Personal Trainer. My job is to help people become the best version of themselves they can be, and an opportunity to help others do that as a career excites me. I quickly learnt that the greatest currency I have is the positive effect I can have on others around me, so that’s what I focus on. Do you have a recent student’s success story? AIPT as a registered training organisation has the highest qualification to employment ratio in the market, and our qualified students are also the most sought after. My first intake of students here in Coffs was October last year, and already one of my students has recently become qualified, registered with Fitness Australia and started work at Beachbodies as well as Mass Nutrition. Her commitment and dedication to her study was exemplary, and it has certainly paid immediate dividends. How can anyone interested in becoming a Personal Trainer get more information about it? They can call me directly on 0432 579 221, follow me on social media or visit our website at www.aipt.edu.au to get an understanding of the course content. Thanks for sharing, Daniel, and if you’re looking to kickstart your own inspirational fitness story, drop in to see me at Coffs Coast Health Club Toormina or our NEW CLUB in MOONEE! You can also contact Daniel on 0432 579 221 to get started today.

Leaks Le THE

STOP THE LEAKS – DOES YOUR PELVIC FLOOR NEED HELP? With one in three women who have had children experiencing incontinence, it is a huge health problem across the population. Leading local physiotherapist Aaron Hardaker catches up with Emily Campbell, a physiotherapist with a special interest in the pelvic floor, who has recently joined the growing Mid North Coast Physio team.

T

ell us a bit about your background, Emily? I grew up in a small coastal town on the South Coast of NSW and did work experience at the local physio practice, which ignited a passion for physiotherapy. After studying at Sydney Uni, I worked in a number of great practices along the East Coast and in Tasmania and have since completed additional training in the assessment and management of incontinence and pelvic floor conditions. I have moved to the Coffs Coast with my husband, a Woolgoolga local, and my three children and am really pleased to bring my skills and knowledge to help the women of this area. What is incontinence? Incontinence is any involuntary or accidental loss of urine from the bladder (urinary incontinence) or any involuntary loss of bowel motion or wind from the bowel. It’s a really common problem, with as many as one in three women who have ever had a baby experiencing urinary incontinence. This can be due to a number of factors, including pelvic floor weakness. That’s why good pelvic floor health is so important. How can physio help? The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that sling between the pubic bone at the front of the pelvis and the tailbone, or coccyx, at the back. These muscles help to control

the bladder and the bowel. They also act to support the pelvic organs and therefore prevent pelvic organ prolapse. Like other muscles in the body, the pelvic floor muscles can be made stronger with exercise, which is where physio can help. A thorough assessment can help to work out exactly what is causing your incontinence and then you can begin a suitable exercise and treatment programme for your needs. With many people performing pelvic floor exercises incorrectly, it is also really useful to have expert feedback on your technique. Why should people seek treatment for incontinence? The simple answer is because it can dramatically affect your quality of life. In many cases, incontinence can be treated or cured, so that you can cough, laugh, run or jump without worrying about leaking. It is also important to have a pelvic floor check before returning to sport after having a baby, to ensure that your body is ready to cope with an increase in exercise. Thanks for sharing, Emily. For women who think they may have pelvic floor weakness or incontinence, Mid North Coast Physio is offering 5 FREE Pelvic Floor Pre-Assessments to meet Emily and discuss your concerns. Call NOW on 1300 273747 to secure an appointment before they are all gone.

Coffs coast nutrition Our team provides a nutrition, health and fitness service with a difference. We understand that everyone has individual requirements and that the “one size fits all” nutrition plans and exercise programmes offered by many gyms and Personal Trainers are not ideal.

Tai CHI Traditional Tai Chi is much more than a low-impact exercise programme. By learning the techniques, students can develop their balance, core strength and ability to live in the moment. Tai Chi is a traditional Taoist practice, which Blue Unicorn Tai Chi teacher, Chris Lewis, first came across when studying Taoist and Buddhist philosophy 20 years ago. “Most people come for the health benefits of Tai Chi. It is a non-impact, dynamic exercise routine that really strengthens you and gives you flexibility.” Tai Chi offers particular benefits for older people, given its benefits in balance, strength and the gentle nature of the movements.

One thing that makes us unique in Coffs Harbour is the fact that Louise Williams and Nicole Clothier are Personal Trainers who also have a Masters degree in nutrition. This enables us to offer customised meal plans and in-depth nutrition advice in addition to our fitness services. We can also assist if you need help managing a medical condition. This type of nutrition advice is outside the professional scope of practice of most Personal Trainers. Fitness sessions can be carried out in our studio gym or outdoors - whatever you prefer. Feel free to either arrange some one-on-one training or join the growing number of our clients who enjoy participating in a session with their child or partner. Our fitness instructor, Col Williams, caters to varying abilities and specialises in motivating each person to achieve their fitness goals without fear of feeling intimidated or judged. Don’t wait any longer. Contact Coffs Coast Nutrition today - we’re here to help!

Toormina Physiotherapy Are you suffering pain during or after running, walking, sport or physical activity? From the way your foot meets the ground at heel strike, to the way it rolls in midstance, or the angle your back makes with your pelvis, a number of factors can influence the force through your body when moving. Does your pelvis drop to one side at heel strike, does your thigh internally rotate too far during stride or are your core muscles turning on at the right time? Is a short calf muscle causing shock through your leg and back, or is the balance between the different parts of your quadriceps muscles putting strain on your knee cap? SKATEBOARDING IN COFFS HARBOUR RECEIVED A MASSIVE BOOST WHEN THE LOCAL PARK OPENED IN 2014. FOCUS TAGGED ALONG WITH BEVIN NEWTON A PASSIONATE LOCAL SKATER WHO IS INVOLVED IN ORGANISING COMPS AND SPONSORING RIDERS TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE LOCAL SCENE AND THE BENEFITS OF FINALLY HAVING A SKATE PARK IN THE CITY.

H

ow long have you been skating? I’m 27 now and I started skating when I was about 12, so I guess that means I’ve been skateboarding for about 15 amazing years. What is it like skating in Coffs? The skate scene here isn’t too bad; there is a great group of skaters and some amazing talent here. I have a lot of friends elsewhere though, and seeing what they are doing with skating sometimes makes me a bit eager to get out of here and be involved with what they are doing. On the other hand, I think I am here for a reason, and they probably look at what I’m doing here and think the same thing. Do you enjoy the skate park? The skate park here is great compared to what I grew up with skating here. I mean, every park has good things and bad things, but overall we are pretty lucky to have something like this right in the CBD. Does the park get crowded? It does sometimes, but as long as most people know how to use it properly, there aren’t too many issues. Is there any sort of order when people are dropping in; do you take turns, or is it first in, first served? Absolutely. Unfortunately, some people are not aware of skate park etiquette. This is something you learn growing up around the skate scene.

What advice could you give to younger kids Some people learn it the easy way; some people who are learning to skate? learn it the hard way. Don’t be shy. Skate parks seem intimidating Is skateboarding very popular in Coffs? sometimes, but there is a community that love Skateboarding has its ups and downs, but helping out. Skateboarders are generally great there is a solid crew in Coffs who will always people, and some of the best people be skating. Skateboarding will never I’ve ever met are skateboarders. If die. For the people who call you want to know anything or themselves skateboarders, need a little help, don’t be it’s a lifestyle and it’s never afraid to ask. about who is better and D on’t be shy. What is it that you like all that - it’s just good to Skate park s about skating? hang out with people ing seem intimidat Skateboarding is who love what you love. e ther sometimes , but at defi nitely addictive: the What setup do you th is a community thrill, learning new tricks ride? ” t. love helping ou and the vibes are great. I skate Z-flex decks; However, the thing I love they are made in most about skateboarding Mexico by one of the best isn’t even skateboarding. It’s skateboard manufacturers in that I can travel anywhere I want the world, so I’m hyped to ride in Australia and have a couch to crash their boards. I also ride DSCO Bearings, on, because no matter where you go there which are an Australian company. As for are always skateboarders. And skateboarders are everything else, I kind of just like trying new things, so I’m always swapping and changing. I’d family! Tell us about the worst injury you have have to say Spitfire’s F4 Wheels and Independent suffered ... Trucks are my favourite. I had never broken a bone up until about two What do you do when you are not skating? years ago. I broke a bone in my wrist, which I own and run the local skate shop (Popsgood) needed a bone graft from my hip; it’s still not in Coffs Harbour, I hold skateboarding events fully recovered. I also broke my ankle in two at local skateparks and do some skateboard places on the opening day of the skate park in coaching clinics ... Other than that, hanging out Coffs Harbor when I was doing a demo, which with my daughter, Abby, travelling and if I can required a plate and a few screws to put it back ever make it to the snow, I love snowboarding.

“

together. Does it take time to get your confidence back after injuring yourself? It definitely takes its toll. I was at my peak just before I broke my ankle, and I’m nowhere near the level I was at then. I’m coming back though, and hopefully better than ever. I’ve basically been in recovery mode for the last two years. Maybe I’m getting a little old ... But I’ll never be too old. Of all the board sports, skating is the toughest and hardest to master; would you agree and why? I think so. A lot of people won’t skate because it’s “too hard”. Also, the fact you are landing on concrete is off putting to some people, rather than landing in water or snow. You’ve got to be a certain type of person to be a skateboarder. I’ve also noticed a lot of kids these days like to take the easy way out and are picking up scooters instead of taking the time to learn to ride a skateboard; it’s a bit disappointing, really. Do you have any sponsors? I skate for Z-Flex skateboards and DSCO Bearings; they send me free products to ride, shirts, hats, decks, bearings and they support the shop I own and run - shout out to Craig and Cheets for always looking after me. Other companies are always sending me free products to try out too, and it’s great to be a part of the Australian skate scene! Support your local skate shop! Thanks Bevin. coffs coast focus. 53

dave Brighton FLOOR SANDING CARING FOR YOUR TIMBER FLOORS • It is not recommended to wash your timber floors nor put floor coverings on top of your newly polished timber floors until they are 100% dry and cured; this normally can take up to 28 days for max cure. • Do a daily sweep with an electro static mop or a soft broom over all the traffic areas. • Vacuum about once a month with the brush head or if you apply felt to your vacuum head, this reduces the chance of scratching your new timber floor. • Wash your timber floors with a recommended floor wash, NOT a silicone based floor wash.

54 coffs coast focus.

• It is recommended after 28 days that you put down floor mats in high traffic areas e.g. external doorways and in work areas such as the kitchen sink. • If you have an office, it’s best to place a nonabrasive mat or protective sheet under the office chair wheels. • Watch for wear areas near dining room tables and chairs in high work areas and doorways. • Place felt under your furniture legs to avoid damaging your new timber floors. Are you in the market for a new timber floor or even a sand and polish on the Coffs Coast? Speak with Dave Brighton Flooring!

Coffs Coast Forests State Forests of the Coffs Coast are a special place, offering a range of activities that others can’t match. Stretching more than 30 km north and south of Coffs Harbour along the coast, and around 40 km west to the ranges, these forests represent a massive outdoor facility for visitors and locals alike. Timber Plantations Dean Kearney is the Senior Manager of Planning for Hardwood Forests in NSW. Here, Dean discusses the role of hardwood plantations and his experiences in visiting NSW State Forests.

D

ean, tell us a little about your experience with hardwood plantation timber forests ... I’ve been working in the hardwood plantations across Northern NSW for nearly 20 years now, amazing given that my first job was only meant to be a temporary six month contract! Prior to that I did a research thesis at the ANU looking at growth and development of two species of eucalypts, Blackbutt (Eucalyptus pilularis) and Flooded Gum (Eucalyptus grandis). They are the major species growing in plantations across Northern NSW, and they also grow naturally in the forests too. During my studies I visited the Coffs Coast to measure trees growing in plantations west of Nambucca and around Coffs Harbour. I fell in love with the landscape, the trees and the awesome climate of the North Coast. How much timber on the North Coast is in State Forest plantations? We have about 35,000 hectares from the NSW Central Coast to the Queensland border. The oldest ones were planted in the 1960s and 1970s, another in the 1990s. We are in a phase of harvesting and replanting the older ones now. The timber goes to local sawmills, and areas are being replanted with the best local species in terms of growth and utilisation. What do you enjoy about your work with timber plantations? There is an amazing sense of growth and renewal when you work in plantations over a long period, especially as the local tree species we plant are so dynamic in the North Coast climate and soils. When we harvest an area, we plant it the next year with 1000+ trees per hectare, so when you return over successive years if feels as if the trees are literally bursting out of the ground, changing from tiny seedlings to large trees in only a few years. One area I pass through regularly has trees planted in 2003 that are now more than 25 metres tall. 56 coffs coast focus.

Does your family also enjoy visiting these plantation forests? Absolutely; sometimes it feels like my family is growing up with the trees. Before children, my wife and I would regularly run on weekends through Tuckers Nob and Pine Creek State Forests plantations. Our track would change depending on where the trees were being harvested and replanted. Now we take our boys, Banjo and Clyde, out there. They just love being out in the wide open spaces. There are some really interesting historical aspects to these plantations remnants of old farm homesteads, usually just an old chimney stack or a few fruit trees, that my boys love exploring. Last weekend Banjo directed me to his favourite old lemon tree - unfortunately there were no lemons, but in just one hour we saw an eagle’s nest, snakes, monitor lizards, wallabies and hundreds of thousands of trees of all ages! Are visitors catered for in plantation forests? Yes, there are a variety of visitor areas in plantation forests along the coast. Swans Crossing in Kerewong State Forest west of Kendall is a popular spot. It’s surrounded by plantation Blackbutt forest and offers places to camp, picnic or just enjoy Upsalls Creek. Closer to home, the World Rally Championships take place annually in State Forests of the Coffs Coast. Wedding Bells State Forest is a popular family rally day, although the organisers are concerned about how fast the plantation is growing - apparently it’s starting to block spectator views! Our North Coast timber plantations are sustainably managed and fast growing, supplying timber and carbon stores for life as future wood products. They are the backdrop to many visitor experiences in NSW State Forests, and I especially enjoy working in this area. Thanks Dean.

COFFS PICTURE FRAMING BUYING & SELLING A BUSINESS If you are thinking of selling your business, you need to be “Buyer Ready”. Ensure that all-relevant business and financial information is up to date. In particular, have current financial statements (balance sheet, profit and loss statements) going back at least two or three years. It is also useful to have a current business valuation, either from a licensed business valuer or from your accountant, based on business appropriate valuation methods. If you are considering buying a business, ensure an appropriate due diligence exercise is done to thoroughly research that you are getting value for money. Remember the old day saying: “caveat emptor” - let the buyer beware. You can avoid unnecessary legal risks, cost and stress by engaging your accountant and lawyer. Business advisors can add value, and it is a better option than warranty/insurance claims or litigation.

East Coast Cabinets moved into Lawson Crescent in the early 1980s, and for many years was “down the laneway between Coffs Harbour Power Tools and Comet”. In 1987 the opportunity arose to move around the corner into a brand new building at No 17 with street frontage, off street parking and easy access for trucks to unload down the side. The New Year of 1988 saw the beginning of a continuing very successful residency. During this time, many employees have come and gone (some have done that a few times). We have successfully seen nine apprentices, including one female, through the process of becoming tradesmen, and we are currently training another. There have been a lot of changes in technology during these years. When the new factory was set up, one double power point was all that was needed in Deb’s office - for the electric typewriter (very flash) and a calculator. There are now ten! These are used for telephone, alarm, NBN equipment, computer, printer, scanner, photocopier and other ancillary items of equipment which are all required to survive in the modern business world. Production equipment also requires updating at times, in order to manufacture to the best quality possible.

What is your area of expertise? Architectural glass walls and specialised glazing - Frameless automatic and pivot door assemblies, shopfronts and all glass repairs. What makes your business stand out? The ability to deliver a high tech product being able to build compliant structurally engineered glass walls. We have robotic and craned suction equipment to lift glass up to 600kg per panel into place. When and why did you start your own business? In 1998 I decided to go out on my own after a long lengthy stint as a sub contractor, I guess I always wanted to run my own show and have a more flexible lifestyle. What the is the best thing about your job? I love my trade. Glazing as a trade has a huge part to play in architecture. Pick up a magazine on the latest building designs and it’s all about glass. It’s usually the first visual impression. What makes your business stand out above your competitors? I think it’s the quality of our product. I’m always sourcing

high quality hardware. Commercial jobs should be looking and functioning for decades. Quality equals zero defects or callbacks, these types of mistakes can really cost a business. What plans do you have for 2016? Currently we are in preparation for a new project, The Vault in Harbour Drive. It will have a new glass facade held together with high quality stainless steel fittings and multilayered glass up to 22mm in thickness. There also is an infernal glass fit-out. So things are very busy for the rest of the year. How do you keep your men motivated? A few years ago I inlisted the services of Aaron Hogben ( MOVE Personal and group training ) to do some specific training to help the boys cope with the sometimes physical nature of the glazing trade. It’s been a huge success with the crew still training early one morning a week at the PCYC followed by a breakfast meeting. What do you enjoy about working on the Coffs coast? Being able to live in one of the best places in the world, where it is easy to manage a vibrant, healthy business and lifestyle.

When did you realise that you had talent I run the Hard Knockz Academy to help and skills?

SCOOTERS & MOBILITY Scooters & Mobility has been established in Coffs Harbour for more than 10 years, and caters for all sorts of mobility needs with its personal caring service. We cover an area from Kempsey to Dorrigo and as far north as Grafton. The best thing about the business is being able to make a difference. Besides scooters, we stock power chairs, walking sticks, lift chairs, toilet aids, shower chairs, as well as stair lifts, which we also install. Previously, wheelchairs were the only form of transport for people with little or no mobility. Now there is a huge range of scooters and power chairs available. The beauty is you don’t need a licence, you don’t need rego, and there is no fuel cost. They are a wonderful form of transport that enable the elderly and disabled to get around. You are classed as a pedestrian and can travel up to 10km/h, and they can be fitted with walking stick holders, canopies and shopping bags, and more. Amputees can have their scooters modified from left to right hand drive if necessary. We also hire our scooters out, so people don’t have to bring them when they come on holidays. We try to give the best service we can, in fixing and repairing everything from scooters to walkers.

loose to prevent injuries. There is also the ice bath, which I hate with a passion, but it’s one of the best recovery methods. How important is teamwork? I think teamwork is very important, but you still have to have an individual’s work ethic. That way everyone improves individually, hence makes the team better collectively. You need to be selfless and pass on a good shot for a better shot - also to be in sync offensively and defensively. What advice would you give to young players who want to make it to the top? I'd tell any individual who wants to be a professional athlete to work harder than the hard working, sacrifice going out with friends but instead work out, be persistent every day, have faith in yourself and in a higher power, and you will be successful. Monthly Deals & Specials Expert Fitters & Advice WHAT IS “PHUBBING” YOU ASK? “PHUBBING” (V) THE ACT OF SNUBBING SOMEONE IN A SOCIAL SETTING BY LOOKING AT YOUR PHONE INSTEAD OF PAYING ATTENTION.

T E TS.

A

ccording to recent research, the act of “Phubbing”, or phone snubbing, is a very real epidemic and aside from being rude and inconsiderate, may also come with a few more insidious results, including serious negative impacts on our relationships. Recent research published by Professor James Roberts of Baylor University’s Hankamer School of Business in the journal “Computers in Human Behaviour” found that 46.3% of respondents said their partners “Phubbed” them and 22.6% said it was causing issues in their relationship. It may seem inconsequential to look down at your phone every once in a while; however, the study results suggest that these few seconds start to weigh heavily on your partner’s mind, eventually contributing to an overall feeling of dissatisfaction, or perhaps inadequacy within the relationship. Not surprisingly, couples that reported higher partner “Phubbing” fought more and were less satisfied with their relationship than those who reported less “Phubbing”. If you are curious as to whether you are guilty of “Phubbing”, you can try answering the following questions (however, I really think we already know the answer!) On a scale from 1 (never) to 5 (all the time) answer these questions: 1. During a typical mealtime that my partner and I spend together, I pull out and check my mobile phone. 2. I place my mobile phone where I can see it when we are together. 3. I keep my mobile phone in my hand when I am with my partner. 4. When my mobile phone rings or beeps, I pull it out even if we are in the middle of a conversation. 5. I glance at my mobile phone when talking to my partner. 6. During leisure time that my partner and I

spend together, I use my mobile phone. 7. I use my mobile phone when I am talking with my partner. 8. I use my mobile phone when my partner and I are out together. 9. If there is a lull in my partner’s and my conversation, I will check my mobile phone. If you are concerned about your answers, you’re not alone! “Phubbing” has been labelled by etiquette advisors as “The End of Civilisation.” If you still don’t get it, think about these statistics: • An average restaurant will see 36 cases of “Phubbing” per dinner session; this is equal to spending 570 days alone, while in the company of others. • If “Phubbing” were a plague, it would decimate China six times. • 87% of teens would rather communicate via text than fact-to-face. But don’t despair … I too am guilty of “Phubbing”, and I can clearly see that it is having a negative impact on my relationships with both my partner and my kids. So I’ve decided it’s time to make a stand and I am challenging us adults to revisit our habits and behaviours. I’m challenging us to reclaim our life, to reconnect with our partners and our friends, but most importantly to stop endorsing “Phubbing” in front of our children, as their “Phubbing” is a learnt behaviour … Taught by us! You never know; you might find you prefer a real smile rather than an emoticon! For a bit of fun, check out www.stopphubbing.com and you can have your say and vote against “Phubbing” or find some other fun downloads like “Stop Phubbing” posters for your home or business. Together, let’s beat this epidemic before it ruins more relationships. Cyber Mum. www.cybermumaus.com facebook.com/cybermumaus coffs coast focus. 65

COFFS COAST HAS A BRIGHT FUTURE A NEW DRAFT TOURISM STRATEGIC PLAN HAS BEEN DEVELOPED TO ENSURE THAT OUR LOCAL ECONOMY CONTINUES TO GROW THROUGH A SINGLE VISION MANAGEMENT PLAN FOR THE COFFS COAST.

T

he draft plan was derived from months of engagement with local businesses, community representatives and interested parties through a series of consultation workshops and online surveys. The Draft Coffs Coast Tourism Strategic Plan 2020 has three key directions that benefit the wider community, including a strong management direction, destination development and destination marketing. The management approach has included the development of a collaborative committee with representatives from businesses and the local community. The management work group, Destination Coffs Coast Committee (DCCC) is made up of Tourism industry operators from Coffs Harbour and Bellingen, as well as Councillors and staff for both local councils. The plan includes key management directions around marketing activities to increase visitor numbers, target repeat visitors and encourage longer stays through the promotion of quality nature based experiences. The strategy for the Coffs Coast destination looks at a holistic approach, with key programme activities designed to identify opportunities for the sustainability of tourism business growth in the area. The local tourism industry contributes around $490 million annually and has the opportunity to significantly grow through strategies that target increased visitors to the Coffs Coast area. The draft plan highlights the development and engagement of working groups to improve services such as local transport services, planning for the Pacific Highway upgrades and increased air services. The increased air services strategy is highlighted, with the recent announcement from Tiger Airways to

add an additional Saturday flight to their weekly return flights from Melbourne, plus the recent announcement of the direct air service between Coffs Harbour and Brisbane with Fly Corporate, which will commence flights on 11 April. Fly Corporate tickets are now available for purchase at www.flycorporate.com.au. The provision for future planning will also include supporting the development of infrastructure so that Coffs Coast remains an attractive place to visit, to live and to do business. The strategy was developed with the provision to support tourism product development and upgrades that will provide visitors with quality experiences in the region. The Destination Marketing activities include innovative strategies to promote leisure, nature based, events and cultural experiences that will build a strong visitor economy for the Coffs Coast to 2020. Key goals of the Marketing Draft Strategy include: • To position the Coffs Coast as the leading regional destination for sports, tourism and innovative events and festivals. • Develop an annual Coffs Coast Tourism Marketing Plan, including a digital and social media strategy, which is inclusive of the whole destination region and supported by industry stakeholders across both local government areas. • To establish a Destination Coffs Coast Brand Review Group (BRWG) to review and evaluate the stakeholder perceptions, brand identity, key messages and brand communication. • Continue the Coffs Harbour City Council review of visitor information services within the Coffs Harbour area to determine an alternative, market-led delivery model. www.coffscoast.com.au

Marina Bay Sands Think Vegas meets luxury resort, and you’ll be half way there. Marina Bay Sands is extravagance beyond belief. Three towers of 57 stories with an infinity pool perched on top of the towers, shaped like a boat. The resort is only half the story, with a luxury shopping centre so large that there are gondola rides inside the centre in the indoor canal. Gardens by The Bay and Botanic Gardens Singapore is home to some of the most spectacular gardens in the world. Gardens by the Bay are 101 hectares of green space in the heart of the city. With tree shaped vertical gardens up to 16 storeys tall linked by a suspension walkway, the bird’s eye view of the gardens is spectacular. But the beauty doesn’t stop there; in the cloud forest with the world’s tallest indoor waterfall you’ll find plant life from tropical highlands up to 2,000 metres above sea level. More traditionally, Singapore’s Botanic Gardens are home to the National Orchid Garden, home to 60,000 orchid plants. e shouldn’t complain, as it enables us to still enjoy the great outdoors for a little longer. I think it’s called an Indian summer! If you happen to be a fan of golfing, the Bonville Golf Resort hosted the 20th Qantaslink Ladies Golf Classic just recently, with over 200 attendees to this event, from 59 different golf clubs in NSW, Victoria, Queensland, ACT and even the Northern Territory. General Manager Brad Daymond commented that the attendees should be congratulated. They travelled from far and wide to celebrate the 20th running of this fabulous event. The weather was perfect, and the golf course in pristine condition. The celebrities, Deborah Hutton and Kerri-Anne Kennerley, both members of the Australian Golf Club, had some great wins also, Deborah taking out the “Nearest the Pin” on hole 11th and 17th hole on Day 1, and Kerri-Anne was the day two winner in Division 2 with 31 points. For some fun and frivolity, Friday night’s cocktail party was a great success. The roaring ‘20s theme was whole heartedly embraced by one and all. Even the Bonville Golf Resort staff were dressed up to the nines and ready to party. Over $2,500 was raised for the Breast Cancer Foundation on the night. It was a big night for one of our local girls, Erin Jackson from Bonville, just recently. She represented the Coffs Harbour Community and Show Society at the Regional Zone 1 Showgirl finals in Grafton. Erin was competing with 16 other showgirls to represent Zone 1 at the Sydney Royal Easter Show to compete for NSW Land Showgirl title. To get to this stage of the

competition, Erin has had to show knowledge of her local region, politics and agriculture. At the regional finals, Erin and the other girls were judged on an interview where they needed to know about local, state, national and international politics, agriculture and general knowledge. Erin had an interview on stage at a formal dinner and spoke about her love of horses and equestrian activities, as well as her role in organising The Young Farmers Challenge at the 2015 and 2016 Coffs Harbour Show. She spoke of her desire to raise funds for cancer services to provide better support for rural people and putting money into research for underfunded cancers like brain cancer. She was up against strong competition and unfortunately did not progress further into the competition, but she did the Coffs Harbour community and Show Society proud. Erin recommends to any girls who are interested to get involved in the Coffs Harbour Show Girl Competition, as it has offered her some great opportunities and has provided her with a great deal of personal growth. Touching on some information about this year’s Showgirl Competition, Le Dãin Designs is proud to be their Major Sponsor being involved with these lovely young ladies. This year’s competition includes interviews, a cocktail party and participation in The Grand Parade at the Coffs Harbour Show on 23rd April at the Showground. It is open to any woman between the ages of 12 and 25 years, and entries are due by Friday the 15th April. Judging criteria is based on personality, confidence, ambitions/ goals, general knowledge, rural knowledge, presentation and dictation/speech. The winner

of this year’s competition will represent Coffs Harbour in Coffs in 2017 at Zone. The winner of the Zone Competition will then go to the Royal Easter Show in Sydney for a week, all expenses paid, for State Final Judging. Whilst in Sydney, the Showgirls attend a variety of functions and activities, in addition to presenting awards to various winners in agricultural competitions taking place at the Show. The Showgirl Competition aims to find a young woman to act as an ambassador for rural NSW; for further details, please contact Mel on 0418 292 411 or mel@fxcoffs.com.au Bit of excitement at the Coffs Harbour Airport just recently. FOCUS attended the Official Launch of the regional airline, Fly Corporate, who were announcing that they are introducing a direct air service between Coffs Harbour and Brisbane. Flights will commence in April, with daily services leaving Coffs Harbour at 7:15 and returning from Brisbane at 5:30pm, using 34 seat Saab 340B Plus aircraft. With a flight time of just 60 minutes, this will allow day return passengers from Coffs Harbour a full business (or shopping trip ... ha ha) before returning on the afternoon service. I was also lucky enough to meet up with the Corporate Air Executive Team and Flight Crew, who were staying at the Opal Cove Resort this month. They were enjoying pre dinner drinks and canapes on the Terrace at Opal Cove, whilst watching the sun set surrounded by a backdrop of the Solitary Islands. Afterwards, a divine dinner was enjoyed by all at the Horizons Restaurant and Bar. The Corporate Air Team were treated to Ocean View rooms and luxury apartment. Gift bags included Costa Berries, and Choc Dipped Bananas were a

surprise treat for each guest. I atteneded the “engagement” party of Russ Holland and Kirsten Howton just reccently. These two local fundraisers sprung a surprise wedding on their friends and family. The garden was transformed into a tropical paradise with the help from Special Occasions and flowers from Jane and Alice from Biggest Bromeliads and Traditionals. What a fabulous evening of love and laughter. Ever popular photographer Emma was there from Emma Rhoades Photography, making forever memories, and guests were treated to delicious dishes from Savouries with a Twist whilst enjoying the music from Rowland Moye. FOCUS attended the 2016 International Women’s Day breakfast hosted by C.ex Coffs. 300 local business leaders and students came together to celebrate the achievements of women around the globe. The event saw the winner of the IWD Coffs Harbour Woman of the Year Award 2016 go to Charlotte Young for her impactful work through Warrina Domestic and Family Violence Specialist Services. The sponsors of the event were the Zonta Club of Coffs Harbour, Business and Professional Women and Coffs Coast Business Women’s Network. I hear the next event will kick start the “Business After Dark” series for 2016. There will be an evening of fine art, champagne and canapes provided by “63 FIRST AVE” (formerly Mother’s Milk) at Sawtell, and First Avenue Gallery will play host to the evening. ROB HOY HOYS PHYSIOTHERAPY

R

ob, you’re a Coffs local. Tell us about your background. My parents moved to Coffs in the early ‘70s. I was only three when we moved to what was then a small coastal town with a population of 10,000. I’m the oldest of four boys (even though everyone thinks Brendan is older). I attended Narranga and Coffs Harbour High. Growing up we participated in Rugby Union, League, swimming, Nippers, surfing and cricket. I completed my physio degree in Sydney and following uni, spent a few years at St Vincent’s Public Hospital, where I gained great experience in all areas of physiotherapy. I then travelled overseas for two years on a working holiday with my now wife, Kerri. From our base in England, we travelled in the UK, Europe and Africa. I returned to Coffs in 1996 and worked as a physio at Baringa Private Hospital for 10 years, before starting the business. Kerri and I married in 1996 and have two teenage daughters. What can you tell us about Hoys Physiotherapy? My cousin, Matthew, was also working at Baringa. We launched Hoys Physio in 2006 at Coffs and Sawtell. We borrowed money from family and started simply with a few ideas, a little equipment, but lots of energy. We’ve grown from the two of us to a staff of almost 20 that includes physiotherapists, exercise physiologists, remedial massage therapists and a naturopath, as well as our skilled and loyal admin team that includes our long-suffering wives, Kerri and Kate. We think they’re very lucky to have us, but they may have a slightly different take on that! In 2007 we acquired Northern Rehabilitation Management, a local business with a staff of nine that helps injured workers and businesses deal with WorkCover and the return to work process, and this year we also opened rooms in Toormina to meet the growing needs of the area. What are your areas of specialty in the field 70 coffs coast focus.

of physiotherapy? Our aim is to meet the needs of all our clients, from toddlers to the elderly. We have a strong focus on treating chronic spinal and joint pain and on providing solutions via hands on treatment, spinal strengthening, core stability classes, hydrotherapy and exercise physiology programmes. Sports physio is also a strong focus of mine and involves diagnosing, treating and managing acute injuries, be it for the weekend warrior or the elite athlete. My work has also resulted in an involvement in many local sports over the past 20 years, such as Rugby Union, League, AFL, soccer, basketball, soccer and surf life saving. I’ve also had the privilege of travelling with the Australian Touch teams internationally to South Africa, Scotland and a number of times to New Zealand to assist in their successful attempts at winning World Cups and Trans Tasman titles. Tell us of any challenges you’ve faced as a small business. Small business always presents challenges you just have to roll up your sleeves and do the hard work to provide the level of service that customers require. For us, this involves long hours, recruiting the right staff and ensuring our office and backroom procedures are in place so that our therapists can provide quality care to our patients. One of the biggest challenges for any small business is managing growth. There are only so many hours in the day, and juggling work, family and personal commitments can be difficult. The last decade has shown us that employing quality, loyal staff and having a trusted team of advisors from which to draw advice and knowledge is vital. At one stage we grew far too quickly, and Matt and I spent a lot of time running around in circles, as our infrastructure and staffing levels couldn’t

cope. Being busier doesn’t mean you provide a better service or are more profitable. We decided to take a step back, review our business, and improve our planning. Keeping pace with the ever-changing world of IT has also been a challenge. We evolved from paper notes and an appointment diary to specific practice management software, online notes, online bookings and an interactive website all accessible from phones, laptops and tablets. How do you strive to set yourselves apart from your competitors? We pride ourselves on providing one-on-one treatment and care in a professional and relaxed environment. Being in pain is not a pleasant experience, and being able to trust your therapist in terms of treatment, advice and management options is hugely important. We strive to provide treatment solutions for acute pain and long-term management of chronic pain, so patients can return to what they most enjoy - be it sport, work or leisure activities. Patient needs are extremely individual, and each and every patient requires a thorough assessment in order for us to provide the very best care for them. What do you find the most effective ways to promote your business? Word of mouth referrals and recommendations are the most powerful ways for us to promote our business. Marketing our services directly to GPs, specialists and other Allied Health professionals is also an extremely important and effective way to communicate the range of services we offer. Involvement and sponsorship of community events and sporting clubs allows us to put something back into the community, as well as helping promote our business. It’s also something we’re extremely proud of. Of course, playing in

a charity golf day or two and having a few cold beverages along the way is always a nice way to catch up with other businesses and let off a little steam. How do you use social media in your business? Matt is our social media and electronic marketing guru. He assures me that it’s important he feature in most of the Facebook posts! Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts allow us to provide the latest research and information about a wide range of conditions. Matt also produces a monthly newsletter that is available on our website and distributed through social media. Each month, our newsletter focuses on a hot topic and profiles one of our therapists. Any great health tips for us all to look after ourselves better this year? If you have an injury or are in pain, be sure to get it assessed and treated as soon as possible, so you can get back to what you like doing sooner. Ignoring pain, which is the body’s warning system, will only prolong a problem that may have been easily resolved. Another tip is to move and exercise daily. The latest catchcry is that “sitting is the new smoking” and it’s true - we’re designed to be active. Movement encourages the release of those feel-good endorphins in the brain, which improves your mood and body function. At Hoys, we want everyone to enjoy an active and healthy life. What’s your work/life balance like, and how do you unwind away from work? The work/ ife balance is always a challenge in small business, and having time “off the tools” is vital in staying fresh, enjoying the all-important family time and having some time to yourself. From the outset, Matt and I have scheduled time off during the week for catching up on life and for catching our breath. Thanks so much Rob.

real estate update THERE ARE NUMEROUS INDICATORS THAT THE COFFS COAST PROPERTY CYCLE IS GAINING MOMENTUM AND THAT CONFIDENCE IN THE AREA IS BUILDING.

acant land sales are performing particularly well (where there are lots available). • Developers are constructing and sales are flowing on numerous new multi-dwelling sites across Coffs Harbour. • The NSW Government’s draft North Coast Regional Plan has determined that Coffs Harbour will be officially recognised as a regional city for the first time. It sets out the NSW Government’s vision for the region over the next 20 years, focusing on jobs, homes, transport and protecting the natural environment. • The Coffs Harbour bypass was last month listed as a nationally significant project by Infrastructure Australia, hopefully bringing it closer to reality; although, with another election in the near future dialogue may not match action, as we have seen all too often in the past. • Coffs Harbour City Council through continued submissions and representations received the fantastic news that they have been awarded $5 million in grants for a major facelift of the Jetty Foreshore and further development of the Coffs Coast Sport and Leisure Park. Again, we now need to see action, not continued circular dialogue to present our great city in all its glory. I recall the President of the Coffs Harbour Chamber of Commerce pleading to Council recently in a speech to “get the Harbour back into Coffs Harbour”. Perhaps the biggest challenge ahead for council and indeed our city as a whole is where and how

we accommodate the forecast 29% or 22,000 people that are expected to call the Coffs Harbour LGA home in the next 20 years. Even at an average of 2.2 people per dwelling, that is around 10,000 properties required to meet the demand. Council recently released and commenced community consultation around the Draft Coffs Harbour Residential Strategy, which will lay the foundation for future zoning and design elements around the residential aspect of development approvals for the next 20 years. This is a very important process, and I would encourage anyone who has the desire to be a part of the future planning of our great city to go to the council website www.coffsharbour.nsw. gov.au and search Draft Residential Strategy. For those who currently own property, or those looking to purchase property in the established areas of the Coffs Harbour LGA (particularly investment properties close to facilities) the basic fundamentals of supply and demand bode well for strong rental demand, and increased price growth as demand continues to outstrip supply in the short-term. This will insulate us from any potential down-turn in the market that the capital may experience - just another reason things are looking very positive to the local property market. Drop me a line at martinwells@mcgrath.com.au if you’ve got a topic of interest or query that you would like to see us cover. Yours in Property, Martin Wells.

ou have won some pretty prestigious awards over the past couple of months. Tell us about them ... At the annual Australian Real Estate Results Awards night, we were named “Boutique Agency of the Year - Regional”. This is an amazing honour, competing against some of the very best independent agents from around Australia and New Zealand. The venue at the Sydney Town Hall with the cast of Phantom Of The Opera performing was a once in a lifetime opportunity and truly a gala event! This year also marked a first in that in addition to the team award, we took home two individual awards. Shane Hessenberger was named NSW Agent of the Year, and Kendall Devine brought home the New Agent Of The Year award. Whilst we were super excited with the team win, the two individual awards gave us a real buzz. How does it feel to be voted the Number #1 Most Recommended Real Estate Agency in Coffs Harbour? Amazing and grateful! Last week our team was named on ratemyagent.com.au as most “Recommended Agency in Coffs Harbour”. These awards are based on the agency who has received the most reviews from satisfied sellers and buyers. Providing our clients with an exceptional experience is what we strive to do every day, and it really is the sum of why we love what we do! As anyone who has bought or sold a property will attest, selling or buying your home can be right up there as one of the most stressful experiences you can go through. Helping clients through the process is our job … Ending up with clients that loved the process and the result is what really matters at the end of the day!

What makes you stand out above your competitors? We are constantly in a phase of improvement. Our entire team trains weekly to ensure that we are at the forefront in our level of skills and knowledge. From pricing strategies, to buyer physiology to negotiation skills, real estate is no longer about being a good “salesman”. It is about being building relationships where people trust you, understanding the importance of marketing in getting a great result, and knowing how to negotiate so that both the buyer and seller feel like it was a positive process. As our team will tell you, we are always implementing! Whether it be a new system, a new marketing idea or a new technology, we are open to new initiatives and enjoy pushing the boundaries. Real estate is a rapidly evolving industry. What was exciting, new and cutting edge three months ago, can very quickly be replaced by a better, smarter or more efficient way of doing something. It is all about the best way to achieve the best result. How competitive is the real estate industry in Australia? Real estate in Australia and on the Coffs Coast is always very competitive. After many years in the industry, we both still retain a genuine passion for what we do, the team we lead, and the people we do business for. If we don’t exhibit these traits, how can we expect our team to? We have been lucky to come to work every day enjoying what we do. That said, it does have plenty of high stress moments! If you

don’t love the job, the competition, the long hours and the hard work, then you won’t last in this industry. Who are some of your stand out agents, and what are their achievements? We are really proud of the culture we have here at Nolan’s. Every team member from front office, to property management, sales and admin forms an integral part of our “brand”. There is no hierarchy. Whether you are ringing our front desk, emailing a salesperson or calling looking for a rental, our expectation is that everyone will have the same positive experience, whoever they are dealing with. Our team work really well together and are constantly challenging and encouraging each other to do well. Don’t get me wrong; everyone works hard and is competitive, but they still enjoy each other’s successes. How do you keep your team motivated? We are firm believers that you have to lead from the top. If the team see you wanting to constantly improve and upgrade after 20+ years in the industry, they generally want to come along for the ride. You can’t expect them to do something that you wouldn’t do yourself. The success of doing a great deal, receiving a positive review, or providing an awesome experience for someone is plenty of motivation to do it again and again. Real estate is a highly dynamic, exciting and interesting profession, where technology and marketing ideas are constantly changing. Our team view change, disruption and challenge as a motivation, rather than a

barrier. What is the key to running successful real estate agency? Clear goals, a shared vision, a passion for the industry, a desire to see people learn, grow and succeed are just some of the keys. As someone once said to me: “If you take care of the people, the money will take care of itself”. This is especially true in real estate, where the only real asset we have are the people who work with us. When we started out nearly 30 years ago as a young family raising four children, it was more about paying the bills and putting food on the table. Now, it’s more about building a legacy - something that we can be proud of. It’s not all about making the most sales. We both get a huge satisfaction out of helping our team become successful people in their own right. That’s what motivates us now, and why we still love what we do and why we believe we are still so successful. Tell us about some the new, exciting projects you are working on now and in the future. There is so much happening in the next few years - we have already launched a number of projects in the past 12 months which have seen unprecedented “off the plan” sales. New high-rises, townhouse complexes, land subdivisions together with our existing residential sale and property management business means there is plenty of exciting things on the horizon to look forward to. Even after many years and much success in the business, we still love what we do and our core values remain the same. There is still so much more that us and our team can achieve! Thanks Scott and Melissa.
