Apart from it being the largest gathering of boardriders in the country, the festival also unifies all disciplines into one large event, compared to nearly a decade ago when each code was run separately. What do you think winning an Australian Title means to the competitors who take part in the festival? Local Coffs Harbour surfer and former World Tour surfer Lee Winkler said it best recently when he stated: “The Australian Title has and always will be the benchmark of grassroots surfing competition and something that is fiercely contended”. What are your hopes for the future of the event? At this time, we look set to remain in Coffs Harbour for 2016 and look forward to bringing some of Australia’s most talented boardriders to the area. Thanks Ethan.

BULARRI MUURLAY NYANGGAN

Born and raised Coffs Coast local Clark Webb has a passion for education and improving the future of the local Indigenous population, working passionately to preserve the Gumbaynggirr language and showing young Aboriginal people they can achieve success by setting an example. FOCUS sat down with Clark to find out more about the programmes and initiatives that he’s involved with.

an you tell us a bit about your connection to the Coffs Coast? I was raised at Nana Glen, where my parents always made sure I knew my connection to the whole of the Coffs Coast as a Gumbaynggirr person, especially Red Rock/Corindi, Moonee Beach, Nana Glen, Coffs and many other local areas. My grandmother was born in the sand dunes at Red Rock. What do you love about living in the area? The first thing that comes to mind is, what is not to love? There’s so much to do in the area. One can enjoy the beach, as well as the bush, and there are heaps of sporting and social clubs that one can join. We’re also lucky enough to be home to one of the oldest cultures in the world, as well as many different cultures and walks of life that can all learn from each other. How did you become involved in education? I went to the University of Sydney, where I became a founding member of the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME) in 2005. Since then, I’ve always been involved in increasing the educational and cultural achievement of Aboriginal youth. 8 coffs coast focus.

Explain what Bularri Muurlay Estate Aboriginal Reserve and Woolgoolga Nyanggan is ... High School. We then extended and set up Bularri Muurlay Nyanggan translates to another learning place at William Bayldon “two path strong” in the Gumbaynggirr Primary School in 2012. All the above was language. We started in 2010 through a partnership We see the learning of Gumbaynggirr as with AIME, Coffs Harbour Local Aboriginal vital to the programmes we run. By learning Land Council and Woolgoolga High School, language, we learn culture. Language gives after we stumbled on extensive research us a sense of pride that is unexplainable. The and evidence highlighting that after school pride we feel from learning language, culture learning is paramount to the development of and knowing who we are as Aboriginal young people all over the world. people forms the foundation for us to achieve So to kick off our programmes, we started in education, sport etc. with after school learning places at Wongala Therefore, language is at the forefront

“

of our after school learning places and cultural camps. We also run a community Gumbaynggirr language class. For me personally, I feel that I have achieved in education due to being proud of who I am. My parents always instilled in myself and my brother and sisters a sense of pride in our Aboriginality. Although we didn’t fluently speak language at home, it was always thought of and spoken about. My father would tell stories of his grandfathers speaking Gumbaynggirr and Bundjalung, but that he wasn’t allowed to learn or speak for fear of being taken away by the government welfare people. So now, learning language has given me a new dimension to knowing my culture and who I am. Just a few weeks ago we hosted a Native American man, Neyooxet Greymorning, who has developed a method of teaching Indigenous languages which has not only proved successful for his language (Arapaho) but also for many languages around the world. This method is called Accelerated Second Language Acquisition (ASLA) and it was taught to 15 Gumbaynggirr teachers and speakers. We are now very excited to implement the blueprint we have been gifted with in our programmes. How hard is it to learn to speak Gumbaynggirr?

focusinterview.

Basically, the goal of our programme is to ensure that our youth are highly educated, so that they can compete for quality jobs whilst at the same time being knowledgeable and proud of who they are as Aboriginal people.

It is a bit difficult to learn Gumbaynggirr, because there aren’t many fluent speakers of Gumbaynggirr in our community. It is therefore difficult to be immersed in the language. There are many historical reasons for not having many speakers. For a time, if a language speaker was caught teaching or speaking language, they could be thrown in gaol. And the kids who were most likely to be stolen from their parents were kids who were heard speaking language by the government welfare officials. Therefore, many people of my parents’ generation were banned from speaking language by their community, for fear of them being taken away. To compare the difficulty of learning Gumbaynggirr with other languages (e.g. French), if one goes to France, that person becomes immersed in French and hence learns much of the language (because they need to, in order to get by!) So the difficulty in learning Gumbaynggirr stems from the difficulty in being immersed in the language. Although there are difficulties, once the grammar of Gumbaynggirr is understood, speaking Gumbaynggirr is then really enjoyable. Hopefully we will have more and more fluent speakers in the near future, who will then be able to more easily pass it on to future generations. You are seen as a role model by both

However, unfortunately 20 minutes into the Grand Final I sustained a broken and dislocated collar bone and to make it worse, we lost the game. A high followed by a low. Other highlights are being picked in the Australian Universities Rugby League Team in 2005 and touring Tonga, Samoa and New Zealand; vice captaining the under 19s Men’s Softball team at two national titles (although we lost both Grand Finals by one run); touring Canada, America, Germany and Singapore for softball; and winning a premiership with Sydney University Rugby Union Club in the Sydney U20s competition in 2004. One funny highlight occurred at a packed Brookvale Oval in 2007, when I was playing footy for North Sydney in the NSW Cup (reserve grade) competition against Manly. I scored a try and as I jumped up and celebrated, I was met with a deafening silence. I had scored in front of only Manly supporters … that was awkward! Thanks Clark. coffs coast focus. 9

hat connection do you have with Coffs Harbour? I grew up on the Coffs Coast with my parents. The first time I moved was to the other side of the world. How did you get into playing basketball; what is it about the sport that got you hooked? I started playing ball when I was in third grade for Boambee Primary School. About two years later, my coach said I should try out for the representative team, so I trialled for the Coffs Harbour Suns U 14 team. Unfortunately, I didn't make the 1st or 2nd division team until someone dropped out and they called me up. After that, the rest is history. Before basketball I had tried every sport possible, but basketball became the first sport I fell in love with. I love the competitive nature of it; there are so many elements to the game, that you are constantly learning something new. I also love the team atmosphere that it brings. I have made so many amazing friends around the world, and I have basketball to thank for that. There just isn't any other sport like it. I thrive off it. What have being some of the highlights of your career? I've been very fortunate throughout my career; although I wasn't the most successful athlete through my younger years, I was persistent. Once I started playing State League for the Coffs Sun, we won a state championship in 2011, and I was awarded an All Star 5 award of the league as well as being awarded the MVP of the season. Throughout high school I also had the opportunity to travel around the globe on a travelling team called the East Coast Dunkeroos, which was organised by a local coach and one from Brisbane. I went on three separate overseas trips, and from these have been to over 20 countries around the world.

My biggest highlight though, was being offered a full scholarship to play basketball on the other side of the world. Growing up, I never thought it was possible until it became a reality. I always look back and remember when I didn't make that first team, but for some reason I never gave up - and that has really been how my whole career has gone. Have you had any injuries along the way? I have been incredibly fortunate to not have suffered any season ending injuries throughout my entire basketball career. I mean, I've had small injuries here and there, but none that have prevented me from missing a game or two. Where are you living now? I currently live in Austin, Texas, which is known as the “live music capital of the world”. It is an amazing city. From all the places I've been, I always struggle to compare them to home, because they are all just so different - and Austin is the same. Being the capital of Texas, it's definitely a city lifestyle, and there is always something going on. Unlike the Coffs Coast there is no beach, which I miss immensely, but fortunately there is a lake here and Austin has a very outdoors

atmosphere, which is Idaho College (NIC). In Growing up, I never had the great. My junior year at St Edward’s we won the Conference Championship, which sent us into the 64 team National Championship bracket for the first time in school history. That was probably the most exciting, thrilling and nerve-wracking game I had ever been a part of, but the result was worth it! What are your hopes for the future? Right now I've just extended my visa to be able to stay and work in the U.S. for another 12 months, and just last week I was offered a full-time position back at St. Edward’s as an office assistant to the Department of Academic Counseling. In the future I’d love to work in higher education, so this will be a great experience for me. After those 12 months I'll most probably come back to Australia, because if I didn't, my mum might be very close to making her way over and dragging me back. Thanks Aimme. coffs coast focus.

Bob Wallis CYCLES Bob Wallis Cycles’ fully equipped workshop has been running in top gear, providing repairs and servicing on all makes and styles of bicycles. We offer a 48 hour turnaround on servicing, to get customers back out riding their bikes. Today we would like to introduce our Workshop Manager - Matt Everett, who along with partner Monique are proud parents to young son Bentley. Matt started out riding downhill, racing National Series rounds; he still enjoys mountain biking, but admits to now being a fully fledged “roadie”. His favourite bikes are his Trek Madone Project One road bike and Trek Remedy Mtb. Matt, a qualified motor mechanic, moved into the bike industry in a large Sydney store, where he was trained in all aspects of bike retail, including mechanics and workshop management. He has now been with BWC for the past four years, leading the rest of the team in the workshop. If you are experiencing any problems with your bike, just call in to BWC and Matt or the team will give you a free inspection and quote on all your bike needs. JOHN RAGEN. COFFS COAST MOTORS What has been your greatest accomplishment in life?

M

y greatest accomplishment in life is being the best person I can be, being the best son to my parents and following their example of putting family first. I have always been a keen sports competitor, having played hockey from an early age and representing NSW on several occasions; I currently play for the Northern Beaches Hockey Club in the local competition and also enjoy a good game of tennis and golf. I am a proud father to two beautiful daughters, Aliesha and Natasha, stepfather to Karla and Neil, and my wife, Jennene, and I are loving grandparents to River, Indi, Bronte and Harry.

OF COFFS HARBOUR

HATTIE WATSON WATSON. TOORMINA GARDENS If there was one place in the world you could travel to, where would it be and why?

I

would release my inner child and travel to the Arctic Circle in Lapland, to visit Santa Claus in his real home. Something I really miss about celebrating Christmas in Australia is the seasonality that I grew up with in the U.K. It feels a little hypocritical to say I love winter, when I’m still more than happy to moan about feeling cold, but for me there are so many amazing memories wrapped up in log fires, dark nights and of course, fields of snow. It goes without saying that I would take my husband and children so they could experience the magic and make their own reindeer-filled memories.

But my first pick was d na my na - I love d an her so much still miss her heaps. She died y when I was in m mid 20s. ”

“ DAVID LAARHOVEN. A1 COFFS COAST TOURS What do you love/like about living on the Coffs Coast?

I

love the lifestyle and close networks, including strong bonds with friends, associates and family that are continuously forged amongst the friendly inhabitants. I love the close vicinity to the natural wonders that lay on our doorstep. I am forever gazing up at the towering escarpment of the Great Dividing Range that surrounds our city, in awe of the grandeur that lies within. This majestic ribbon houses numerous biodiverse regions such as the many State and National Parks, that host a wondrous array of endemic flora and fauna linked by habitat corridors flowing into the Solitary Islands Marine Park. To quote Plato: “Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder”. Who can argue with the fact we do live in one of the most biodiverse regions, with a backdrop and coastline anyone would be envious of.

HEIDI BRETT. VAST INTERIOR If you could have dinner with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

T

here were so many to choose from, but after much thought I decided on who would be my favourites to come for dinner - one dead, one alive. Alive, I’d pick Alan Rickman, because he is devilishly funny and has a wicked sense of humour - and who wouldn’t want to have dinner with possibly the most hilarious movie villain ever (think Sheriff of Nottingham and Severus Snape). But my first pick was my nana - I loved her so much and still miss her heaps. She died when I was in my mid 20s. There is so much of our family history that was lost when she died, so now as I get older, I wish I’d taken the time to really listen to everything she had to say.

DAVID BLACK. LA HACIENDA 101 If you could have dinnerwith anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

I

would have dinner with my children as a family for Christmas. Embarking on a sea change and following a dream I had with a friend 12 years ago of owning a restaurant café on the beach somewhere, it has distanced us on special days such as birthdays and Christmas. With my children living in Melbourne and West Wyalong, they support me in everything I have achieved so far at La Hacienda 101. The restaurant is very busy all year round, with Christmas Day the only day we close. This year my twin daughters will also be celebrating their 18th birthday on Christmas Day, so I would dearly love to have a birthday dinner this year. With Michael by my side and my children (or should I say, young adults) we would have a picnic on the beach, feasting on local produce, enjoying a swim and great company with games and laughter, then relax under the shade of an umbrella on Serenity Beach. This way I could share my piece of paradise and enjoy the company of those closest to me.

MICHAEL SMITH. LA HACIENDA 101 Where is your favourite place in the world and why?

M

y favourite place in the world is actually Emerald Beach. Having done the whole sea change thing last year from Leeton, NSW and joining David to create a wonderful little restaurant here, where we actually live in other people's holiday memories, so that they can either return or simply remember us as part of their life long journey or the time spent travelling through this region. Emerald Beach has the quiet little village atmosphere where people know people (or their dogs) stop and talk, wave and look out for each other. This little place has it all and is situated only 11 minutes from a regional centre and airport, but with all the wonders of nature on tap. I can walk my dog, Lucy, every day (well almost) and play fetch on the most gorgeous beach I've come across.

PAUL BASING. THE PIER HOTEL If you could have dinner with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

A

nybody who knows me can agree I love a joke, which is why I would have to say I would really enjoy dining with Eddie Murphy, kicking back with a few bottles of wine and listening to his story on life. Not only is he one of the best comedians, but also a writer, actor and director. Any person who has seen Delirious would have to agree your ribs haven’t hurt that much before, and you haven’t shed that many tears since your dog died. Imagine after having a few drinks and getting him to replay the scene of The Ice Cream Man!

OF COFFS HARBOUR

PAIGE SINCLAIR. DOLPHIN MARINE MAGIC How do you like to spend your spare time?

I

love to spend my spare time with my beloved OPUPs (other people’s unwanted puppies). We like to go for walks and enjoy many cuddles together. When we are not walking or cuddling, the “girls” are happy to sleep while I get busy painting in my medium of choice ... watercolour! Nearly 25 years on, I still consider myself a novice in this medium, but I simply cannot get enough of the magical and happy accidents this medium is known for. When I paint, I find myself immersed in a spiritual happy place this hobby allows me to be in. All of my day to day worries fade, and I enjoy the process of creating. I don’t always get the results I aimed for, but that is the beauty of life and this medium. I am happy being inspired by the opportunity and my ability to simply try!

S

inclair, tell me about some of the places you have filmed around the world. I have been very fortunate to have had some interesting assignments in places as remote as Easter Island and Tahiti, to the west coast of South Africa to Niijima Island, Japan and Brazil, but I never thought I would get the opportunity to work in Antarctica. Tell me about your latest adventure ... Since moving to the Coffs Coast almost ten years ago with my young family, I made the conscious decision not to travel so much. But when one of my clients, natural health company Blackmores, asked me to document the process of catching krill from its source in Antarctica, I jumped at the opportunity. What is krill? Krill are the tiny prawn-like crustaceans that are a rich source of omega-3s. Antarctic krill is known for its purity and potency, and that’s why Blackmores uses it in their products. How did you get there? It was a bit of a mission, with a flight from Coffs to Sydney then to Santiago, Chile, via

Auckland. We then had a three-stop flight to the Falkland Islands, where we landed at a UK military base to get to the main town of Stanley. Each side of the road was littered with active war mines from 1982. Stanley is a quaint little fishing village and one of the main ports for trips to Antarctica. From there, it was a five-day journey on a 200 m long Russian tanker across the Drake Passage to the Antarctic Peninsula. It was rough at times, but mostly a smooth journey. We then transferred onto a Norwegian fishing ship for eight days. Tell us about your first impressions of this great continent? Where do I start? I felt like I had travelled back in time. The sheer size of everything around us felt prehistoric, and I was half expecting a dinosaur to pop up! What struck me the most was the size of the mountains (up to 2,500 m) rising straight up from the ocean. To put it in perspective, it’s like standing on Muttonbird Island and looking towards Sealy

Lookout, but imagine it is eight times higher. Everywhere you looked there were glaciers meeting the ocean, with cliffs 300 m tall. The clarity and visibility of the water was also incredible - Tahiti is known for some of the clearest water in the world, but Antarctica is just something else. The floating icebergs were twenty times the size of our ship. They’re so big, that sometimes they get stuck between islands and stay there for years. What was the weather like while you were there? Thankfully it wasn’t as cold as I was expecting, with most days ranging from -10 - 0 degrees Celsius. This made filming relatively easy, but I was surprised at how quickly the conditions could change. One day it went from -2 and sunny to about -20 and snowing, with 70 knot winds in half an hour. However, the location is isolated and with two young children, the maintenance became time-consuming. “With our youngest daughter approaching school age, we decided it was time to move closer to town into an area where our children can play safely with other kids. Most importantly, we wanted a location that maintained its rural charm. ou’re back and have re-branded your business! Yes, Surf Street Café is the new name. I was excited about creating a brand new look and feel for

this restaurant. A trip through Southern France last year was the inspiration for several menu items - also the new décor. As we travelled around, I noticed how restaurant menus used only seasonal produce; if something was not in season, it wasn’t on the menu. Chefs changed their small blackboard menus regularly to allow for the availability of produce. With changing trends moving away from fine dining, my idea was to offer a variety of dishes, some complete meals and others that can be shared. At Surf St Café, your dining experience is more casual and affordable, so eating out can be any day of the week, not just for special occasions. If you just wanted to sit on the deck and watch the surf with a cocktail or glass of wine, there are several smaller, snacky items you can have. Who is your Head Chef? Dan Williams is my Head Chef, and we have worked together before. He has adapted some of the ideas I brought back from France. I have a great team in the kitchen right now. What’s on the winter menu at Surf Street Café? On the dinner menu there are warming rich meat braises, seafood chowder, duck with fennel and black forest sauce, just to name a few. The ocean board and vegetarian board are great to share at lunch or dinner, and there are also plenty of seafood dishes to choose from. Zucchini fritters with haloumi, kale, avocado salsa and poached egg for breakfast is already 28 coffs coast focus.

a hit. With dietary concerns these days, eating out can sometimes be tricky; we have tried to address this with several gluten free and vegetarian dishes. What events have you got running over the next few months? Every Thursday night is blackboard night; we have entrees for $10, mains for $20 and desserts for $10, and a glass of wine is $5. Enjoy a delicious global menu, and it’s different every week. What would you choose from the menu for dinner? I would have some freshly shucked oysters followed by the confit duck with braised fennel, witlof and black forest sauce. If I had any space left, it would be crème brûlée with rhubarb compote. Do you source your products locally? Yes, whenever possible that is the first choice; our vegetable and fruit supplier supports local growers. Our seafood and meat suppliers do the same. You are a very popular wedding destination. Tell us about your packages and how we go about booking ... Surf St Café is the perfect venue to celebrate your marriage or any special occasion. Right on Emerald Beach with unrestricted views overlooking the ocean and S.W. Solitary Island, your guests will love that you’ve invited them here! arents might remember schools having provided band programmes, choirs, recorder ensembles, violin classes and more as part of the daily curriculum. With the pressures brought upon schools through budget cuts and demands on already stretched teachers, music classes dropped to the absolute minimum and children began missing out on the vital aspects of music in their educational curriculum. There are 18 regional Conservatoriums in NSW alone, all of whom have lobbied together as the Association of Regional Conservatoriums NSW and now stand proudly as the Department of Education’s chief providers of music curriculum in schools. Our Conservatorium currently provides music programmes in 10 schools across the region, with a constantly increasing list of schools signing up for the programme. Lessons are offered in most instruments on an individual, shared and group basis, making tuition affordable and convenient for parents. Some schools have raised their own funds through P&C committees to provide free weekly class sessions. By including music in the school day, students benefit enormously in academic achievement and develop improved skills in concentration, group cooperation, fine motor development, memory, communication and self-expression. Extensive studies worldwide have proven the positive

effects of playing music in all of these areas, and the importance of keeping music in the curriculum is being acknowledged by an increasing number of schools. If your child attends a school that is not currently registered for the Conservatorium music programme, you can either talk to your principal regarding the introduction of the programme to the school, or attend the Conservatorium after school hours, where you have a choice of nearly 30 teachers in a wide range of instruments. The Con has a vibrant and growing range of ensemble programmes to bring together students of similar levels from all schools and provide support and performance opportunities. Many students who attend our ensemble programmes consider their ensemble sessions to be the highlight of the week and make close and positive bonds with other like-minded students. The performance programme at the Conservatorium has gone from strength to strength, and recent concerts have been sold out well before the day of the concert. All students are invited to perform at low pressure studio concerts for parents, then advanced students perform solos at public concerts and the ensembles perform their own full concerts throughout the year. Many of the teachers are high level performing artists in their own right and perform together, providing inspiration for students as well as vital enrichment and connection to their own passion for music.

MEET LOCAL BUTCHER BRIAN GUEST, WHO MAINTAINS THE TRADITIONAL SKILLS OF BUTCHERY AND HAS A PASSION FOR WHAT HE PRODUCES ...

an you tell us a bit about your background? Butchering has been in the family for many years, with both of my grandfathers owning butcheries from the 1930s. My father's father had shops in Surry Hills and Redfern, and his mother's father had shops in Newcastle and Richmond. All of our five children know the ins and outs and ups and downs of our butchery too, as they have all worked beside us every day for the past 10 years. I did my butcher’s apprenticeship in Macksville at the co-op from age 17 - 21, and it was a hard slog - stuck in a little room with one tiny window, 12 hours a day. I learnt from old school butchers who broke down carcasses - not like today, where meat comes in cardboard boxes and gas filled plastic bags. At 21 I travelled the world doing all types of jobs for a few years, but returned to help look after my father, who had a stroke. What is your connection to the local area? My family moved to Urunga from Panania in 1988. After holidaying at Valla for many years, they decided to live in this beautiful part of Australia. I attended Bellingen High School and made many friends along the way, although the best connection is that all of my immediate family are living on the Mid North Coast too. What do you like about living around here? I don't think there is anything not to love about living in Valla (except for the unbelievably slow internet). We have a secluded rural home where we can bathe in the serenity, then a 10 minute drive to our shop at Valla Beach. So we

have a rural lifestyle, with the sea, surfing and fishing just on the other side of the highway. How has Valla Beach changed since you’ve been working there? from scratch, or even know what is going into the sausages that aren't made by them, but just delivered in boxes. Are there many young butchers taking on the trade? Butchering is a trade with many long and monotonous hours at not a great pay rate; there are not many passionate young butchers around willing to work hard and reliably. We feel like it is a dying trade. What is your speciality? We cure and smoke our own ham and bacon traditionally in a smoke oven. Our ham and bacon is broken down from Aussie pigs, pickled in pieces in our top secret cure, then slowly smoked and cooked for many hours in a keg oven. The whole process from pig to ham takes about a week, but so worth it. We are very proud of our sausages and every ingredient that goes into making them. We are always trying new recipes. Every piece of meat that goes into a Valla Beach sausage has been hand picked! Thanks Brian. coffs coast focus.

Y

ou’re certainly one of Australia’s greats on the comedy scene, but how does one get started in comedy? By accident. It was never something I set out to do. For me, aspiring to be a comedian was like aspiring to be taller, or French - it was out of the question and never a consideration. In fact, growing up, I would never have known that being a comedian was a job. In fact, I am still not sure that it is. A couple of months ago I was introduced to someone at a function as a comedian, and they said, “Oh really? What’s your real job?” And I thought, “You could be right”. Can one learn to be funny? Are there any secrets to telling good jokes? Like anything, you just have to do it often enough and you will learn (if the audience doesn’t kill you first). You have to want to do it enough, and like doing it enough, to be able to take the thrill of a successful performance with the humiliation, physical pain, grief and self-loathing that comes from a “not quite so successful one” - if I may put it like that. The constant pursuit of the perfect gig, the thrill of the chase, and the momentary pay-off when a joke works well, is possibly a little like being addicted to the pokies; there is lots of coin going in, lots of noise and lights, the joy of the pay-off, and the constant lure of the jackpot. Something makes you keep going back. I guess the audience will tell you whether it’s working or not. Will you let us in on one of your more embarrassing stage moments? No. I am a firm believer in denial being the best therapy. If I constantly recalled getting kicked in the head by a horse, why would I get back on? I know there is no gain without pain, but I only need to feel it once.

Having said that, I have to admit I have attempted tens of thousands of things in the cause of comedy - and on occasion have felt like Borat at a Texan Rodeo. And like Borat - if he was real - you just have to pretend it’s them, not you. Really, you should never blame If a joke doesn’ t the audience, non-competitive, he work… you just although it is , em th s it’ d en et even gives me his have to pr permissible , you gags. There are so many looks to select from, but basically you can choose to wear classic racing attire fashions, or follow the latest trends. Either way, if you are entering Fashions on the Field, you should always aim for elegance and follow a few basic rules and regulations. With House of Le Dãin Designs being one of the Major Sponsors for our Park Beach Fashions on the Field and sitting on judging panels both locally and at other racing clubs, I am constantly asked what is appropriate for which season etc. Simon Chladil from the Coffs Harbour Racing Club’s advice is that the judges will always be looking out for a well groomed appearance and attention to detail. ROBINA’s HAIR BOUTIQUE

ROBINA’S HAIR BOUTIQUE IS A HIDDEN GEM IN THE BEAUTIFUL TOWN OF WOOLGOOLGA. ROBINA AND HER TEAM ARE CELEBRATING A MASSIVE 40 YEARS IN BUSINESS THIS YEAR. WE CAUGHT UP WITH ROBINA TO FIND OUT A LITTLE ABOUT HER SUCCESS.

W

hen did Robina’s hair boutique first open? Robina’s Hair Boutique came about on the 1st July 1975, when the little salon down the walkway from the now “Benettos” Café, in the Don Clinch complex of “Surfside Plaza”, came up for sale. My husband, Geoff, and I had not long moved back to our home town, Woolgoolga, from Sydney after a few years there, honing our skills after finishing our apprenticeships in Coffs Harbour - me at the most fashionable “Salon Peter” in Grafton Street, and Geoff as a boilermaker at “Isles Forge and Engineering”. I came home to manage the “Lorelle Salon” for Shirley McHugh, a former Coffs Shire Councillor, when the salon in Woolgoolga came up for sale. What a gamble, wondering whether you have it in you to take that big step! But yes, I guess to believe in yourself and trust your ability, it was all systems go. So now, 40 years later, it’s hard to believe all that has passed. Where did you study to become a hairdresser? My journey began with applying for a job in The Advocate for an apprenticeship in hairdressing at “Salon Peter” in 1968, and I was successful. I was really wanting to join the Airforce, so I was waiting to turn 18 to apply, but yes, guess what, along came my future husband - so I didn’t want to go anywhere! The four years of my apprenticeship in the top salon in Coffs was amazing. Peter Voglesinger, as my mentor, taught me amazing skills, even singeing of long hair with a candle to get rid of split ends - gosh! Those halcyon days of debutante balls and footballers’ balls were full on;

38 coffs coast focus.

lots and lots of long hair up styles were the fashion in the late 1960s. It was a fabulous time, and when I got to Sydney, doing long hair “up” was what got me the jobs in various salons, as no one was doing long hair well. Later in my apprenticeship, in the early 1970s, wigs were the rage; nearly everyone had a wig - hard to imagine nowadays. We used to have clients drop in to have their wigs fitted, while they dropped off their “spare” to have it shampooed and set. Our “technical” work was done by correspondence, as there were no TAFE facilities here in Coffs. We did our practical licensing exam at the TAFE College in Ultimo, Sydney ... much the same as all apprenticeships in country regional areas - so scary and intimidating. So glad we now have a fabulous facility at the SCU in Hogbin Drive. During the early years of my apprenticeship in 1969, one of my strongest memories was watching man walk on the moon through the window of “Grahams Retrevision” in the main street - High Street. I used the excuse to leave work to go and get morning tea, knowing that the telecast was happening. We were eight deep in the street, trying to get a glimpse of the “tele” - wow, I will never forget that moment. Over the years I have trained five apprentices, which was so rewarding. All of the girls embraced hairdressing with the whole of their hearts and went on to do well in their careers. To teach my skills with the passion I have is something that will help me feel I have accomplished something from my time in business. After four years at Surfside Plaza, the opportunity came about to move into the main street. A lot of locals will remember Bill and Nancy Sanders, who were real estate agents; well, they were building two shops on their block of land in 1979

where the Credit Union is now, so I asked them if they had room for me - and the answer, thankfully, was yes. Yay! Bill took a piece from the front of both shops for his little real estate office and gave me one side (right through to the laneway), and Nancy, his wife, had the other for her haberdashery. I had an amazing eight years there, before the Credit Union bought the building. So onto another chapter, into another new salon at the “Balcony View” complex, where I currently am now. We moved in 1987, the year before World Expo in Brisbane - such an exciting time for Australia. Woolgoolga has been such a fantastic place to raise our three children, all of whom attended Woolgoolga Primary School (there were no other primary schools in the area - hard to believe now), and then onto Woolgoolga High. I think they are very fortunate to have started and finished school with the same bunch of friends. Now Geoff and I have three beautiful grandchildren ... gosh, everyone said to me, “Just wait ‘til you have grandchildren”, and they were so right. What a wonderful time of life. So that’s my story (abbreviated somewhat, otherwise I would bore you to tears). As I’ve said before, having the salon for so long, and going to “work” has not been “work” for me; it’s been a pleasure ... All the wonderful people I have crossed paths with over the years, with every day a different day. So it is with much sadness, but excitement too (as a new chapter unfolds) that I offer the salon for sale. I can’t believe that time has flown so fast. It’s time to hang up the scissors (so to speak) and be at home for my family. (I really need the grandchildren; or is it the other way round?) Thanks Robina.

Ramsay Health Care

W

IN COFFS HARBOUR JOURNEY

hat is your story, Elizabeth? I came to Australia from Scotland with my family 29 years ago, and we came directly to Coffs Harbour. My family continues to grow, and we now have a wonderful extended family and great friends here. My first years were spent working at what was then Coffs Harbour District Hospital in Victoria Street, from where I have many happy memories. Fourteen years ago I accepted an executive role at Baringa and Coffs Harbour Day Surgery. I am so happy that our private health service still works well and happily with the public health service in Coffs Harbour, and I believe that this enriches all of us as a community. Baringa Private Hospital was the company’s first medical and surgical facility, and it was also the first of Paul Ramsay’s regional hospitals in Australia. We have now been here on this site for more than 35 years. Ramsay Health Care is now one of Australia’s top ASX listed companies and is the biggest provider of private health care in Australia. It is now a global company, but it still reflects the strong

values of Paul Ramsay. What does your job entail? Well, I am part of an executive team of three: myself as CEO, Peter Parkes the Director of Clinical Services and Mike Gray, our Commercial Manager. We manage Baringa Private Hospital in Mackays Road, Baringa Rehabilitation, our outpatient allied health business also at Mackays Road, Coffs Harbour Day Surgery in Albany Street, and The Baringa Centre at the Specialist Medical Centre, adjacent to the base hospital. My role is to lead and manage the business, ensure compliance with all the rules and regulations entailed in running a health facility and to grow and diversify the business. It may not sound exciting, but it is, because it involves constant interaction with people. Peter (aka the best dressed man in the hospital) has many portfolios and is the go-to person for the day-to-day operation of the clinical facilities and of course, is responsible for the delivery of safe and quality patient care. Peter facilitates work experience and undergraduate student placements and drives the quality and policy framework that keeps the service cohesive and robust. Mike is our Commercial Manager and

analyses the business in all its strands and makes it possible as a team for us to make the best decisions for the growth and direction of the business. This may sound a bit dry, but Mike makes it all exciting and imbues it with a sense of endless possibility. Besides that, he is the office comedian and one never knows what messages may be waiting for you on your door in the morning! We always appreciate that we are part of a much larger close knit team. We celebrate things together, and it speaks volumes that they were among the top fundraising hospitals in RHC for the Nepal Appeal. They are truly people caring for people. What is the best thing about your job? The founder of the company, Paul Ramsay, passed away last year after a stellar 50 year career building this company. Paul bequeathed his major shareholding in this company to a charitable foundation. This means that we work substantially for a charitable institution, one that we will be hearing about in coming years. What services does your health service offer? It would be easier to say what services we do not offer. We have some of the best doc-

tors in the country! In partnership we offer a wide range of services, including most surgical specialties, at both Baringa and Coffs Harbour Day Surgery. We have a large and successful rehabilitation business, which ranges from inpatient, to day patient and outpatient care. Three years ago we established Bindarray, an inpatient mental health unit at Baringa. We provide day medical services, including chemotherapy, and our medical unit offers a range of medical inpatient services, including palliative care. We provide IVF services in partnership with Genea, who bring their scientific team to Coffs Harbour three times a year. What is the future of Ramsay Health Care in Coffs Harbour? We have grown a lot in the last few years and will continue to do so to meet the needs of our growing population. From an organisational perspective, we wish to work with our teams and stay at the cutting edge of emerging pharmaceuticals and technologies. This brings its own challenges, but we believe our community deserves to benefit from scientific advances. Any tips on running a business? Always employ people smarter than yourself!

It was an exciting time, taking in new trends and techniques to bring back to the wonderful Coffs Coast celebrity clientele. XO Dolls.

Park Beach Dental Surgery A commonly asked question here at Park Beach Dental is “What is the best age to start bringing your child in to get their teeth checked?” We believe that around the age of 18 months, when the first back teeth (molars) start to erupt, is a great time to bring little ones in to be gently introduced to the dentist, the staff, and the equipment that is used. We strive to make this a fun visit, with a ride up and down in the chair, maybe a little peek into their mouths by the dentist with a mirror (only if they are ready and allow it!), and lots of smiles and encouragement; of course, there is a small treat at the end as a positive reward. This encourages good feelings about the dentist, so that in the event that a little accident occurs, as often happens with small people exploring a big exciting world, they are just returning to visit some familiar people to be fixed up, and will feel comfortable about any treatment needed - and so will Mummy and Daddy! Also, with regular checkups from an early age, any small problems can be dealt with before they become even bigger problems.

sagging pelvic organs known as prolapse. They are much like “hidden hernias”, and the symptoms can be very distressing and lead to social isolation, embarrassment and restriction of many usual activities. Dr Ward has over 15 years’ experience in South Africa, Canada and for nine years in Australia in managing these symptoms and offers complete diagnostic work up, including Urodynamic studies (bladder function and efficiency test) conducted with Meagan Kelly, Physiotherapist, who has a special interest in pelvic floor management. At our centre, we have a full range of continence devices and supportive technology like our Neocontrol chair, to assist with exercising the pelvic floor muscles. We liaise with an excellent regional network of trained continence advisors and physios. Dr Ward has performed more than 800 prolapse and incontinence surgeries in Australia alone. He is a surgical prolapse teacher with Boston Scientific and travels in Australia to mentor prolapse surgeons on site. He has presented his large database internationally and continues to be involved in research to find the optimal solutions to this silent epidemic, as one in three post menopausal Australian women have this condition.

Bellingen Healing Centre is an Accredited General Practice, established 23 years, with an emphasis on preventative and holistic medical care. Health is a journey with your practitioner to wellbeing, asking the question, “Why is this illness or disease present in this person?” The Practitioner integrates orthodox medicine and complimentary therapies to treat the disease and prevent further illness. Our practice consultations include women’s, men’s and adolescent health, immunisations, travel medicine advice, vaccinations, skin checks, wound care, aged care, mental health plans, naturopathic consultations, nutritional advice, vitamin and mineral supplementation, chelation and intravenous vitamin therapies, herbal medicine, bio-balance and counselling. We also provide Visiting Medical Officer services to Bellinger River and District Hospital and Bellorana Aged Care Facility. Our practice of bio-balance, which is a natural treatment system based on current science, recognises most human beings have nutrient imbalances due to genetic and environmental factors that can cause health problems. Through blood and other testing, the balances can be addressed and more optimum health outcomes achieved. It is particularly applicable to anxiety, depression and other mental disorders. It can help minimise the use of orthodox drug medicines.

Our goal is to provide patients with cost-effective, efficient and cosmetically appealing solutions to vision problems. The original “flip up flip down” polarised clipons, which have been available for many years, had limited popularity as they were cosmetically unappealing, rarely matched frame shapes and added significantly to overall weight. When shape-matching customised magnetic clip-ons were first introduced about 15 years ago, I had reservations about their success. However, while not achieving universal acceptance, they have proved to be popular as a particularly cost-effective option for converting prescription spectacles into polarised sunglasses. This is especially true with advanced technology lenses. Domani Clikons offer polarised lenses and an extremely effective patented lock on system which prevents the clip-on from dislodging, even with vigorous activity. They combine the best quality acetate material which is designed and polished into highly fashionable frames. These can be combined with Transition lenses, which are less effective for driving, as the windscreen absorbs the ultraviolet which triggers the colour change. Polarised lenses are extremely effective in cutting out reflected glare from road and water surfaces. To see the full range, visit alanburrow.com.au. Click on Frames and then Domani.

SELINA,SIAN & SALLY INSPIRATIONAL FITNESS INTERVIEW

In healthcare

who have all discovered the posture, flexibility and strength benefits of Pilates.

Thank you for such a positive response to last month’s story about Penny. This month we are catching up with a small group of Pilates devotees and their Personal Trainer, Jacqui Barnett, to hear their inspiring story.

W

hat is your exercise background? Selina: I have always been involved in some sort of sport my entire life. Currently I play hockey, I attend pump class twice a week and I attend a Pilates class with Jacqui. Sian: I had never been in a gym until five years ago, but now can’t imagine it not being part of my week! I also love my daily walks - usually about 11km, weather permitting! I wear out shoes very quickly. What are some of your exercise/fitness goals? Sian: I have some quite restrictive back injuries (from nursing) and being physically fit, by lifting weights and the core strength that I get from Pilates significantly reduces any nasty recurrences. Why did you choose Pilates as an exercise option? Sian: I have been doing personal training for a few years now, and it was my trainer’s suggestion that I also add in some Pilates to mix things up a bit and to help with my core strength. Sally: After having my third child seven years ago, I wanted to strengthen my core muscles. My gym instructor recommended Pilates and advised it was a fantastic way to focus on core strength. At the time, Jacqui was running a small class teaching the principles of Pilates, so I joined in. I really enjoyed the exercises and learning the theory behind it. I like the mind/body focus you require in Pilates. You do Small Group Pilates with Jacqui; how has this benefitted you? Selina: Small Group Pilates has not only assisted in improving my abdominal muscles and back muscles, but it has also improved my posture and flexibility. Each member of our group has different strengths and weaknesses in our body, so were lucky that Jacqui’s teaching method is such that the lessons are taught to suit each person and exercises are regularly reevaluated to ensure they are appropriate for that person.

Sally: Technique is so important in Pilates, and because we have a small group, it means that Jacqui can correct our posture in any exercise if something we are doing is not correct. Working in a small group with others at the same level really pushes you to challenge yourself. Why did you select Jacqui as your Personal Trainer, and what have you been doing together to achieve your goals? Sally: Having previously worked with Jacqui, I knew how much she gives to each client and that she would get the best out of me. I have always enjoyed Pilates, so when Jacqui told me she was starting up a class again, I was really keen to work with her. What goals have you achieved so far? Sian: Stronger core particularly, but a good all over increase in strength. Selena: So far I have gained immense strength in my back and abdomen, and as a result of Pilates with Jacqui I have also noticed improved posture, flexibility and an all over body awareness. What are your goals for the future? Sally: I’d like to incorporate the postures that I have learnt through Pilates to help with my posture and to strengthen my back muscles. What is the most useful advice you could share? Sian: Give it a go! If you haven’t tried Pilates, then you should today! Selina: Don’t be embarrassed to give something a go even if you have never done it before or give up because you thought you weren’t very good at it. I think all too often we compare ourselves to others. Remember, no one is actually watching what you are doing; you only think they are. Thanks for sharing, girls, and if you are looking to kickstart your own inspirational fitness story, drop in to see me at Coffs Coast Health Club. You can also contact our reception team on 6658 6222 or Jacqui on 0421 971 155 to get started today.

focusinterview with Samantha Wardman of CornerPost Consulting

T

he wedding scene on the Coffs Coast is going from strength to strength, being named in the most recent Bride Magazine as “the new Byron Bay”. Passionately leading the charge is Lauren Fraser. Her company, North Coast Luxury Weddings, has some swoon-worthy venues on their books and is highly sought after for couples seeking a wedding without the cookie cutter approach. They’ve also shared an office with the CornerPost Consulting team at The Promenade. Here we talk to Lauren about the business of weddings … Tell us about how your business, North Coast Luxury Weddings, came about? Seven years ago I arrived on the Coffs Coast from Sydney, leaving behind a career in event management that I loved. The move prompted a change from event to venue management. I enjoyed it at the time, but my love for organising events endured, and I needed to be challenged more professionally. I had started noticing a shift in the wedding market. Gone were the days of cookie cutter weddings. Couples wanted a more personalised approach and distinctive venues to make their day unforgettable. Thus, North Coast Luxury Weddings was born. What services do you offer clients? Ultimately, we make a wedding happen! We manage all the details and logistics, planning a seamless event. Sometimes this is from the very beginning, or just when they need a helping hand. We do the legwork, we schedule, we liaise with everyone, we manage the suppliers, we negotiate pricing, we set-up, we solve problems and once the day is over, we pack it all away. We basically take the stress away and make sure those big plans and intimate details turn out just right. Our specialty is producing weddings at private properties. Everything has to be hired and brought onsite, from plates, furniture, linen, the kitchen, lighting and often even power … we have to organise everything. But this makes the wedding completely bespoke and allows us to fit within a range of budgets, which is amazing. We are grateful to have been selected by three luxury properties (Marlowe House, Orara Valley Estate and Villa Vivante), as their exclusive wedding planner. We operate primarily on the Coffs Coast, but extend up to the Byron Bay region and south to Port Macquarie. We love weddings and love travel, so if people would like us to be a part of 44 coffs coast focus.

but also make some great connections with industry leaders. This is one of the perks in what is a fun industry to be part of! Customer service is an important aspect to any business. What is your philosophy on this? In the wedding game it is all about relationships. Weddings are emotive, families are complex, and the stress levels can be high. Delivering superior customer service is of the utmost importance, but it becomes somewhat irrelevant if you cannot connect with your clients. Yes, this is a business, but the wedding business is personal. We work hard to build our client relationships, which in turn builds the level of confidence they have in our ability to manage their wedding effectively. I am also very selective as to whom I employ. The one skill that any of my employees must have is that they must be brilliant with people. This foundation is a great starting point for us to manage our couples’ expectations and then overdeliver on performance. As we are essentially the production managers, it is imperative that we only partner with the most talented, professional and respected vendors, whose work has proven to be of a consistently high standard. We are spoilt for choice on the Coffs Coast, with a vibrant wedding industry made up of some of the best in the business. So far our approach has been successful. We’ve just hit the two year mark, and we’ll hit 100 weddings in November. Thanks Lauren.

Online Safety or Cyber Tips for Parents with Caroline Bleechmore, Park Beach Plaza.

CYBER

MUM

ONLINE SAFETY TIPS FOR PARENTS

DAVID STRATTON

CYBERBULLYING TAKES MANY FORMS. ONE FORM PARENTS NEED TO UNDERSTAND IS A TERM CALLED “EXCLUSIONARY CYBERBULLYING”, AND IT’S A TOPIC THAT IS NOT GETTING MUCH ATTENTION.

S

o what is “Exclusionary Cyberbullying”? The example goes like this … Your child misses out on an invitation to a party. We’ve all been there when our child is the one who’s been left out, because it’s a numbers thing. What has changed in today’s world of social media, however, is your child now has to watch the party go down online. Photos start appearing on Instagram or Snapchat while the party is on. Understandably, your child is upset and left feeling hurt and excluded. Yes, that’s life, and our kids have to learn to cope with these situations and basically toughen up; I get that! But the difference is when the kids attending the party start “tagging” your child in the photos! So even if your child is trying hard to ignore what’s being posted, they are now given no choice but to look at everyone having a great time as they are receiving notifications about the photos they are not even in! It’s kind of like having their faced rubbed in the fact they are not invited. Another technique and a growing trend amongst teenage girls and boys, is the “Friends List”, where kids are listing their “Besties” in their “bio”. This is common practice on Instagram. Kids are then using this list as their power and adding or deleting friends to make a point and demonstrate their power and ability to exclude the other child when and as they wish. In fact, kids are using the inclusion “In My Bio” as a bargaining chip to manipulate others to do as they wish. The power of delete is probably the most confronting form of “Exclusionary Cyberbullying!” Kids use social media to punish others by deleting photos that their friend (now ex friend) is in. Photos that were once lovingly posted to declare their friendship discarded at the click of the delete button in an attempt to send a message of power to the now exfriend. In its worst form, this bully attempts to cover their tracks by liking other people’s photos

D that include the deleted friend, just to mess with the poor child’s head. These online behaviours have a shocking impact on the victim and as innocent as they may seem to the bully, the child that has been deleted, tagged, or excluded is left having to deal with what is the silent and confronting humiliation that to them is very apparent but hard to explain to others. These “Exclusionary Cyberbullying” tactics are confronting, hurtful, manipulative and premeditated. They are intended to be mean and exclude a child, as there is no other purpose for the behaviour. “Exclusionary Cyberbullying” can be tricky to spot, because many young people who are being bullied don’t want to tell teachers or parents, because they feel embarrassed. The things to look out for include: • Is your child upset after using the internet? • Is your child spending longer than usual online, or refusing to use the computer at all? • Do they exit computer activity as you go past? If the answer to any of the above is yes, chances are your child is being excluded online and is perhaps feeling powerless to do anything about it. So what can and should you do about it? Talk to them … Sometimes all they need is to know you have their back! Take time every week to sus out who’s talking to who and saying what and ask your child how they feel about it? Be interested and engaged, but not nosey! Ask if everyone is remembering to use their digital manners? Then remind our kids to use theirs! Don’t ban your kids from social media; it’s not the answer. This will ultimately isolate them further. Encourage your kids to not be afraid to call friends/users on their online behaviour. Empower your child to tell the bully that’s inappropriate and if they continue the behaviour, block the person. Blocking with explanation and reason sends a very clear message.

T H E N E W FAC E O F S AW T E L L C I N E M A

avid Stratton has been passionate about cinema since long before he became a household name as a film reviewer on SBS’s The Movie Show and then ABC’s At The Movies. He understands that great films are made to be seen in great cinemas. Which is why he has stepped forward to support our iconic Sawtell Cinema. In July, a major crowdfunding campaign will kick off to raise funds for the Cinema’s new seating, and David Stratton will be the face of that campaign. We spoke to him about life after television and the importance of regional cinemas. We all miss seeing you on At The Movies! What have you been doing since the last episode aired in December? I certainly haven't been idle. I still review films and attend previews for The Australian, and I still lecture on film history in the Continuing Education programme at Sydney University. Plus, I'm hosting screenings on cruise ships in July (in the Mediterranean) and January 2016 (New Zealand). In addition to all this I'm writing a book on Australian films. So I'm pretty busy. I’ve read that your favourite film of all time is Singin’ in the Rain. Is that true and if so, what is it about the film that is so endearing and enduring? From a very early age I was an avid filmgoer, and in the late ‘40s, and for most of the 50s, musicals were one of the most popular genres. A new musical was released just about once a fortnight in those days. I enjoyed them all, but Singin' In The Rain was by far the best of them - not only a beautiful piece of cinema, but a truthful examination of the problems associated with the arrival of talkies. I don't claim it's the BEST film ever made, but it's my personal favourite. When you are watching a movie for review, what are the key things you consider in your assessment? First and foremost I consider the attitude of the filmmaker(s). Was the film made with passion and commitment, or was it merely an assignment? And then I look at the story, the screenplay, the dialogue, the acting, the cinematography, the use of music and all the other elements that make up a movie. You have long been a champion of the Australian film industry. How would you rate the current state of Australian film? I love Australian films, because at their best they provide an antidote to the American

films that swamp our cinemas and television screens. But Australian films struggle to find an audience, not because they're bad, but because we lack the finances for adequate marketing and promotion, so often they're simply overlooked. I always tell people that if they want to see a particular Australian film, they should go on the opening weekend - after that it may have gone. On Australia Day just past you were honoured with an Order of Australia for service to the film industry. How did it feel to be so highly awarded? I was very pleased to be honoured with an AM on Australia Day. It made me realise for the first time that what I've been trying to achieve since the 1960s has been worthwhile and is appreciated. Your autobiography is titled I Peed on Fellini. Is there a story behind that title? In 1966 I attended my first Venice Film Festival, representing the Sydney Film Festival. At the opening night party, held in the Palazzo del Doge in St. Mark's Square, I'm afraid I drank rather too much champagne and when I finally located a toilet, and found myself standing next to the director whose work I admired so much, I made the mistake of turning towards him - he was not amused. You are supporting the reopening of the Sawtell Cinema - for which we are very grateful. How important do you think local cinema is in regional Australia? Regional cinema is incredibly important, because films were made to be seen on a cinema screen, with an audience, not on a television screen or, heaven forbid, on a smart phone. Where I live in the Blue Mountains we have a small, privately owned cinema that shows the films the major cinemas ignore, and they have a loyal and passionate audience. I'm sure the Sawtell Cinema will fill the same role. Will you be coming to Sawtell to see the new cinema when it opens? Yes, I plan to come to Sawtell early in 2016 to see the reopened Sawtell Cinema. I believe that the crowdfunding campaign offers the opportunity to join me for dinner and a movie at the Sawtell Cinema. I’m looking forward to it! Thanks David. To find out more about the Sawtell Cinema’s crowdfunding campaign, go to www.sawtellcinema.com.au. Dinner and a movie with David Stratton … that must be every cinema buff’s dream! coffs coast focus.

here has been an incredible amount of work involved as we lead into the event, and my deepest appreciation goes out to the small group of committed volunteers who have worked tirelessly to ensure the smooth and successful operation of all involved with a successful Chilli Festival. My sincerest thanks also to those Sawtell businesses who have supported the event by way of donation or feet on the ground and of course, our media and corporate sponsors. Without you, the Chilli Festival would simply not happen. The Sawtell Chilli Festival, amongst other enterprises, has succeeded in putting Sawtell on the map and bringing visitors and locals alike to sample what we have on offer in our beautiful village. Without the Festival and our constant marketing and promotional programmes, Sawtell runs the risk of becoming one of those “has been” coastal villages where people stop visiting and the economy runs dry. We must therefore continue to work

hard on these projects and keep Sawtell very much alive. Thanks again to the wonderful volunteers who understand the importance of such. So in saying all that, let's turn up the heat! Don't forget on Friday, July 3, there is an open invitation from the Sawtell Hotel to support the Westpac Rescue Helicopter by participating in an exciting raffle offering hampers of wonderful chilli products, gift items, sporting memorabilia, as well as holiday packages, a health club membership and beautiful items to enhance any home. Local businesses and stallholders alike have come on board, donating these wonderful items to the raffle in a collaborative effort to support this invaluable service. The raffle will be drummed in by the Rafiki Connection, young drummers from Burundi, who will perform a welcoming routine from their native land. The hotel will provide live music, with Chilli Miranda making an appearance, and Ilias the Greek will be among the crowd to make sure that everyone is greeted with “Yiasatis!” (to your good

health.) And of course, the main event on July 4! The Sawtell Chilli Festival kicks off at 10am and will be opened by our mayor Denise Knight and the town cryer. The Festival will provide a showcase for both local businesses and a stunning range of innovative chilli products from around the state and elsewhere. Visitors will be amazed at the range of products on offer, such as relishes at every heat-level on the chilli spectrum, the world’s hottest chilli and chilli wine, but to name a few! Sawtell’s famous restaurants will serve up their best, and you’ll find wonderful ideas, gifts and bargains at Sawtell’s many beautiful boutiques. There will be live music and entertainment all day, including appearances by Big Dog, Chilli Miranda, The Smurfs, jumping castles and much more. Entry is by gold coin donation. So this year not only mark your diary for Saturday 4th July, but Friday night July 3rd. Two extremely fabulous events not to be missed in Sunny Sawtell. Look forward to seeing you!

CHAU & HENNESSY PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTANTS Self-Managed Superannuation Fund (SMSF) specialists.

BEYOND NOW SOLUTIONS Beyond Now Solutions is a professional business advisory firm specialising in business efficiency, growth management and financial management of small to medium businesses in the Coffs Harbour Region. The business owner, Natalie Ryan, is a Chartered Accountant who has worked with many businesses across the Coffs Coast over the last 16 years. What are the key factors limiting a small business owner’s ability to move forward? Business has many moving parts. A couple of key factors are: Lack of organisation and systems in the areas of quoting, invoicing and collection of money. Lack of capital or misdirection of capital to non-income producing activities. No or little understanding of the business numbers - profitability and cash flow being the key drivers. What can business owners work on to get off to a good start for the 2016 financial year? Most business owners started or bought their businesses for financial and lifestyle freedom. Unfortunately, many are not realising that dream. It’s critical to sort out systems and processes so that generating revenue, paying suppliers and increasing profitability and cash flow become easier and quicker. The business owner can begin to reap the lifestyle and financial benefits for themselves and their family. This includes reducing stress, personal growth, increasing family time and health aspects of life. What is the best approach to sort out and organise a business? There are a number of methods, but the key one in the current business environment is incorporating the use of online tools and technology. This will leverage up big outcomes for a business. In our current tech world, it’s confusing, so we provide insight and solutions as to how to transition and use tools to benefit the business. What is your favourite tool that businesses

could benefit from in the 2016 financial year? Hands down, my favourite tool is Xero. It is an online accounting system that creates amazing efficiencies in the areas of quoting, invoicing, paying suppliers, collecting money from customers and providing real time financial reporting. We work with clients to bring together other tools available in the cloud eco system to really drive efficiency and performance in the business. Many business owners are asking their accountants and bookkeepers about Xero. We are huge advocates and have seen first hand amazing results for our clients. We have also seen many businesses who have Xero and are not using it to its full potential. With a little bit of education and training, we have seen big changes in these businesses. How can you help businesses who want to move to Xero? We are offering all Coffs Coast businesses and invitation to contact us, and we are happy to discuss the merits of Xero compared to their current system. We also have a demonstration booth in our office, so you can see firsthand how it works. Further you can register your interest to attend an upcoming seminar at annie.vanbest@beyondnowsolutions.com.au. We are happy to work with their accountant and bookkeeper. We are a Silver Partner for Xero and can access low cost transition arrangements for local businesses. What sort of businesses should be considering Xero? It is suitable for most businesses; however, we have seen amazing outcomes for trade-type businesses across various industries, as well as trade based suppliers. Specifically, improved quoting, improved payment and collection of money, improved organisation of bookwork, improved financial reporting and importantly, improved profitability and cash flow. Contact us for a no obligation discussion on 6652 2221.

As at the end of March 2015, superannuation assets in Australia now total $2.05 trillion and there are estimated to be more than 534,000 SMSFs operating, holding close to one-third of Australia’s retirement savings. There is no doubting the importance of superannuation to your financial future and the biggest question now facing many Australians is, how much will I need in retirement to provide the lifestyle I desire? And with life expectancy continuing to increase, good planning from an early age is now critical. So is an SMSF for me?

HELPING business grow The Critical Factor exists to help our clients grow. We do this through a problem solving approach that has a very clear focus on tangible, measurable outcomes. We consider “how” we achieve our success to be just as important as what we achieve, and we do this through a clear focus on integrity, open communication, client satisfaction and leadership as an organisation.

complete PEST CONTROL What is a pest and termite specialist? It takes knowledge, experience and the latest equipment to successfully protect a home from pests - and especially termite attack. The annual damage bill to homes in Australia from termites is estimated at more than $100 million, so it’s essential to have someone that will take the time to understand your house and the issues you have. Who uses your services? We have a large number of domestic clients, as well as a host of local restaurants, clubs, businesses, builders and senior villages. We still provide our customers with individual personalised service. No person

is ever the same, so no property is ever the same. What makes you different to other pest control services? Besides our dedication to quality of work and value for money, seeing that we are one of the largest pest companies on the Mid North Coast, one thing I’m so proud of is Complete Pest Control is 100% local. I went to school at Toormina, my kids will go to school here, my partner is a nurse at the hospital, and all jobs stay local. We sponsor two rugby league teams, as well as a local Motocross rider and other events in our community, and there are plans for further sponsorships into 2015 and beyond.

Specialising in working with individuals and businesses that need help; we work with you to identify issues and problems; we create pragmatic and sensible plans to drive change whilst supporting you and your team as you work for a different result. Recent Case Study - A recent client was having trouble recruiting the right candidate for a role. They had employed two candidates over the past 12 months for a role, and both of them proved to be unsuitable. This was costing the business time and money. Using specialised interview techniques and some psychometric testing, we were able to add value to the recruitment process and provide insights and advice over their top three candidates for the role. This client now has the right person in the right role in their business. At around $700 per candidate, this service soon pays for itself and helps to avoid costly hiring mistakes that can take many months to resolve.

Why use The Critical Factor - Principal Tim Kitching has over 20 years’ experience in leadership positions in both the Public and Private Sectors, including the NSW Police Force and the National Australia Bank. He has coached literally hundreds of people to success as a Leader within large organisations. Tim’s philosophy is simple. Success, in any endeavour, is ultimately about Direction, Planning and People. Concentrating on these three things will always result in change and coaching is, after all, about positive change. Tim’s proven track record of success, combined with a deep knowledge about leadership, people and planning for the future, makes Tim the perfect partner to help you succeed in business.

MANAGING HEAD SPINNING GROWTH It was only 18 months ago that Jasmin Adams posted an image of the moccasins she had made for her son on Instagram, asking if anyone else would like a pair. Today, she and her graphic designer husband, Ben, work full time running their global company fromZion, and managing a team of two part time staff and five casuals. The business has over 46,000 Instagram followers, a professional ecommerce website and international retail distribution for an expanding range of moccasins and apparel for children and adults. That’s head spinning growth! When we granted Jasmin one of MJ Accountant’s 2015 Business Excellence Scholarships, we hoped we could help stop her head from spinning. After five months working with our business coach, Jennifer Holman, Jasmin spoke to me about how she’s handling the growth. Mel: What’s the secret to growing your business so quickly? Jasmin: We have been so lucky that our business has grown so rapidly by itself. I’m so excited that people are loving our brand! The problem for us isn’t growth; it’s knowing how to handle the growth. It’s hard to keep up and know we’re doing the right thing. Mel: What has been your biggest worry? Jasmin: Cash flow was our biggest concern when we started seeing Jen. We have to pay for stock six months in advance, so there’s a lot of money tied up in inventory. Because we are such a new business, we couldn’t get banks and lenders to take our sales projections seriously. There just wasn’t enough trust. Mel: Was your business coach able to help? Jasmin: Jen had confidence in our projections.

50 coffs coast focus.

So she tied up appointments with banks that MJ Accountants already had a relationship with, and came along to the meetings to vouch for us. We finally reached the outcome that we needed.

UPDATE

Mel: That must give you confidence. Jasmin: Yes. Having Jen involved has made us feel safer in what we’re doing overall - confident we’re doing it right. Ben and I often have chats about the business and we’ll say, “Let’s email Jen.” She’s so easy to talk to, and she simplifies things into language I can understand. Mel: What are some of the complexities you have to deal with? Jasmin: Because we are a multi-national business, we need to deal with all those different tax rates and laws. That was getting way too confusing and overwhelming for us. Jen explained it all to us, so we now feel confident that we’re doing it right. Mel: What about your business structure? Jasmin: When we first met with Jen, she advised us to move from a sole trader to a company right away. Our business had grown too big, too quick. We weren’t even thinking about this. We would have had no idea how or when to do this. Mel: So would it be fair to say that having a business coach has helped you to manage growth? Jasmin: It’s been good having Jen. We kind of feel like she’s in fromZion with us. She calms me down when I’m overwhelmed and helps me to focus on the really important things. And she gives me confidence. She reassures us that we really are doing well. MJ Accountants is here to help our clients grow and thrive. If you need help managing growth, give us a call today.

Quadrant Travel & JOURNEYS

Kerry Moss ARABIAN PENINSULA Have you caught up with the buzz of the Arabian Peninsula? We asked our travel writer, Kerry Moss from Quadrant Australia, to tell our readers a few of her favourite things about Dubai and Abu Dhabi ...

K

erry, tell us about what you love about Abu Dhabi ... When I first arrived there, I was blown away by the luxury; it’s a paradise for grown-ups. You can never be prepared for the feeling of walking into the grounds of the luxurious Emirates Palace - its unprecedented extravagance, with a private beach and 114 breathtaking domes decorated in gold and marble. If the architecture doesn’t capture you in Abu Dhabi, then maybe the dining experience will. It’s the only place in the world where my cappuccino was dusted with gold instead of chocolate. If fast cars and speed light your fire, then a trip to Ferrari World is a must. It’s the largest indoor and first Ferrari theme park in the world. But undoubtedly the most iconic landmark in Abu Dhabi is the Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque, truly a feast for both the eyes and the soul. It’s open to the public and is one of the largest mosques in the world, with capacity for an astonishing 40,000 worshippers. The main hall is dominated by one of the world’s largest chandeliers, 15 metres in height and 10 metres in diameter. Many of our readers have been to Dubai. What did you discover, Kerry? I’ve always found Dubai to be so much more than the glittering luxury of high-rise buildings and public displays of wealth. A first time visitor should definitely visit the insane shopping malls. They’re a shopper’s paradise and a sight for your eyes, when you discover that under one roof you could swim with sharks, buy yourself a Tiffany ring and ski on world class snow slopes. Within walking distance (not that anyone walks anywhere!) is Burf Khalifa, which is the world’s tallest tower and from the

observation deck has unparalleled views of the surrounding sand dunes. If you stand at the bottom of it and crane your neck, you genuinely cannot see the top. If you’re the adventurous type, you should also take a tour in a 4WD out to the sand

Local Tour Company Quadrant Australia is offering readers a chance to visit Vietnam, with their Vietnam Farm Tour departing in December. Travellers will get the chance to visit Vietnam to experience the country’s vibrant culture, its food, history and its people. It’s an opportunity to enjoy the contrast of tranquil villages with the bustling cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) whilst visiting small scale farms growing tropical fruits, sugar cane, rice, sweet potatoes, corn and vegetables and learning about the cooperatives that are the basis of agriculture in Vietnam. Travellers will get to observe rural life in picturesque villages and be inspired by breathtaking scenery on a cruise through Halong Bay. If you like the sound of visiting colourful local markets and participating in a Vietnamese cooking

school, all in a country with fascinating history and architecture, then be sure to drop in to see the team at Quadrant in Vernon St, Coffs Harbour to find out more about this tour. Quadrant Australia has been operating international tours for more than 30 years. Some of their tours, like the Vietnam Farm Tour, are specially designed for people from the land who enjoy meeting with local farmers and learning about farming methods in Vietnam. In 2016, Quadrant will be offering more than 20 specialised tour to countries such as Italy, Spain, USA, Canada, UK and South Africa. If you would like to be placed on the exclusive list to be one of the first people to find out about these tours, give the team a call on (02) 6651 1555.

dunes, followed by dinner in the desert under the stars. It’s a little touristy, but a must for a first time visitor. What I really love about Dubai though, is the multicultural mix of luxurious hotels and world-class cuisine alongside authentic souks (an open-air marketplace) and Mosques. I love that Dubai surprises me. Every time I think it has reached its limits, something new is created. Last time I was there, my taxi driver told me that over 20% of the world’s cranes were currently in Dubai on various construction sites. We all know that taxi drivers hear the real stories of a city. What about the surrounding countries; is it safe there? I live by the mantra, “You never learn anything standing still”, and I believe that travelling allows you to experience cultures, experiences and people that you may not experience otherwise. But even so, I found the Arabian Peninsula to be a wonderfully safe and welcoming destination. Even when off the beaten track in Oman or travelling on my own with a local driver, I never felt too far from my comfort zone. Would you go back to these places, Kerry? Absolutely yes; in fact, I have already. We’re really fortunate in Australia to have an alternate route to Europe now via Dubai so if you’ve always wondered, then it’s an ideal stopover on your way to Europe. Thanks Kerry. We look forward to hearing about your next adventure. coffs coast focus.

Emma Donovan grew up singing church songs with her maternal grandparents on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales. Her first secular gigs were singing in The Donovans, a band comprised of her mother and five uncles. With her mother, Emma sang country for years, and in her youth was a fixture at the Tamworth Country Music Festival. Emma is a member of The Black Arm Band and currently plays with The Putbacks, who will be appearing at the Bello Music Festival.

2006 I was asked to become part of “The Black Arm Band”, which I am still part of today. Can you tell us about The Black Arm Band? The Black Arm Band is more of a company; they have large ensembles and great productions. It's very important to me; I find it very uplifting working with the band. Recently I did a bit of touring with them, and we went to the Northern Territory to visit communities there. It was called, “The Bush Tour”. Part of what we do is for some of the artists to go out to these areas early before the whole band rocks up and maybe play at the local school, work at the youth centre and be part of the community - which is awesome working with the kids and young people, sharing the music. Currently you're working with “The Putbacks”. Tell us a bit about this experience ...

Yeah, it’s beautiful. I love working with them; they are like another family to me - like brothers. We recently opened for Paul Kelly and The Merri Soul Sessions, which was amazing. We were really spoilt; we played in Victoria, Wollongong, Sydney, at all of these amazing theatres that Paul Kelly and his mob had organised. Is Paul Kelly someone you have drawn influence from? Yeah, I have always liked his songs, and he has written for some of the artists that I really respect and look up to - Renee Geyer and Christine Anu. My father is a big fan. Now that he has discovered iTunes, I help him out with his iPod and he always says, “Make sure you put Paul Kelly on there”. Are you looking forward to playing at the Bello Festival? Yeah, for sure. It sounds like it's going to be awesome, and

I am looking forward to collaborating with some of the artists who are going to be around. There have been a few invitations flying about, so it should be a lot of fun and a great weekend. What are your hopes for the future? Record a few albums with “The Putbacks”, working with Hope Street recordings; they do amazing work - pressing vinyl still and that sort of thing, which I find exciting. Mainly keep making music, as it's such a big part of my life. I would like to maybe make a gospel, country music style album as respect to the music that I was influenced by. Also, to put together some songs for the kids back home; I work with the Muurrbay Aboriginal Language Centre in Nambucca, and they translate the kids' songs I write into the Gumbaynggirr language, which is awesome and something I want to do more of. Thanks Emma. coffs coast focus.

eButton I A N

K I N N Y

After observing his elderly neighbour try to maintain his independence and struggle with existing emergency alert options, eButton Inventor Ian Kinny knew there must be an easier way. With a background in engineering and an appetite for innovation coupled with a determined attitude to solve any problem that arises, he has created a dynamic and innovative solution for an ageing population.

H

i Ian. Tell us a bit about your background and your connection to the Coffs Coast ... I originally came to Coffs Harbour as a Civil Engineer to establish a precast concrete facility producing bridge girders for a major contractor in 2008. My wife and I liked it here so much, we decided to stay. I became involved with programming as an undergraduate in the 1970s, taking a computing elective in my final year. I have been involved with computers and programming at some level ever since. Can you briefly explain what the eButton does? The eButton is a simple to use emergency alert and personal safety device. It enables you to call help with just one click. It is a mobile solution that works wherever your smart phone has coverage. One click on your eButton initiates the free app on your mobile smart phone.

54 coffs coast focus.

There is no need to touch your phone. It is that simple. So if you are feeling faint or you are unable to access your phone, perhaps you have had a fall or are feeling threatened, you can quickly and discreetly click your eButton to alert the people you trust that you need assistance. You don’t need to fiddle with passwords, locate an app or contact on your phone, and dial for help. The eButton alert also gives your location and updates for locations if you move. One click calls help. Simple. Where did the inspiration come from for the solution? I was talking with my neighbour, who had recently undergone major heart surgery. He had an active social life and was always off somewhere playing tennis, bridge, going to restaurants and leading an active life. He was experiencing fainting episodes, and this caused him and his family concern. We discussed some of the help devices on the market, but they were not portable, and Bill really did not want to be confined to his home. He needed

something that was simple, worked wherever he went, and told people where he was if he needed help. I discussed it with my wife and son, and the whole concept developed from there. How long has it taken to develop? The development of the android version took around six months of solid work to bring to fruition. The Apple side has taken quite a bit longer. The original Apple development stalled for a while. I have found a different way forward, and the Apple version is now very close to being released. What hurdles have you had to overcome in the production of the eButton? There is a lot of cutting edge technology built into the eButton. There wasn’t a lot of documentation available for these technologies, and this meant a lot of trial and error in the early days. Finding a suitable pathway to comply with Apple’s requirements has been another big challenge in developing the eButton. The

Apple version of the eButton was stalled for over a year until I found some newly emerging technologies that overcame Apple’s restrictions while still giving the same simple, easy to use experience for the eButton. Are there other devices on the market that are similar or is the eButton unique? eButton is unique in that it is mobile and has a modern, sleek design. The eButton will work wherever your mobile phone has reception. Other alternatives on the market have a base station that is often hard wired to the home, and the device can be quite bulky to wear. Many have ongoing fees. With the eButton, you choose who you want to contact when you require assistance, and only those trusted people are ever contacted should you need help. The eButton enables the user to have walks, go shopping, socialise and even hang glide (they do say adventure before dementia). How does the eButton compare with your competitors on price? eButton is roughly half the cost of the next cheapest competitor. There are no ongoing costs after the initial purchase. I priced the eButton deliberately so that cost isn’t a barrier to safety. That way, more people can benefit from the peace of mind the eButton

brings. Do you need to re-charge the eButton often? A great question. One of the many features of the eButton is that you don’t have to constantly recharge it. The new low energy bluetooth technology built into the eButton means the eButton runs on an ordinary coin cell battery and typically has a battery life of over a year. The eButton battery level is monitored by the app, which alerts you when the battery is need of replacement. Who is likely to use the eButton? The eButton was originally intended as a medical emergency alert button. The more I talked to people about the idea, the more ideas came up about where it could be used. It is now obvious that the eButton has extensive applications beyond its original intended use. Almost every week someone comes up with a new possibility for its use. It really surprises me that people can see so many possibilities. I’ve had a lot of people interested in getting an alert device for their parents who live independently and are getting a little older. I’ve also had a lot of interest from mums whose teenagers travel on public transport, have late finishing jobs or attend lots of parties. Quite a number of

business people have indicated that they are concerned about their Workplace Health and Safety obligations when they require staff to see clients alone. They feel the quick and discreet nature of the eButton may be a significant tool in improving employee safety and ensuring that they, as the employer, meet their duty of care. But the uses go on and on. I think the discreet use of the eButton would have an application in domestic violence situations. One use that really appeals to me is having my son carry an eButton as he travels overseas. I find I don’t worry quite so much. Do you see a lot more things becoming connected over the next few years? Imagination is the only limitation as the technology accelerates into every facet of our day to day lives. It is an exciting time to be alive. Although some friends believe I should be looking at retirement, I am excited about developing more ideas in the years to come, being inspired while enjoying time in the great coffee shops around our beautiful town. What’s next for the eButton? The release of the Apple version of eButton is imminent. We are extremely excited to finally have found a work around that meets Apple’s requirements. With the Android app, anyone

with a mobile phone can be a help contact. It is not restricted to just Android users. Similarly, the iPhone app will be able to have help contacts who are Android users. I have some more exciting ideas about what comes next for the eButton. I’ll keep these under my hat until I get a bit closer to a release date. What are your hopes for the future of the device? The eButton has been created to help people. If the eButton can save just one person in a crisis, all the hard work will have been worth it. It would give me immense satisfaction to have the eButton help one of our senior citizens to get help after a fall, to help a student being harassed on a late night train, or to get a timely intervention when someone is being threatened. If the eButton can reduce the amount of anxiety that family and friends feel for the people they love, or can be instrumental in getting help to someone in a crisis, then the eButton will be a success. It is a wonderful project to be involved with. Where can people find out more about yourself and the device? Go to our web site "http://www.ebutton. com.au" for more details. Ruby or Garnet will help you feel grounded, taking away some of the dilemma.

hat connection do you both have with the Coffs Coast? These days Matt and I are proud Sawtell locals. We both grew up on the Coffs Coast and have returned to give our three kids the same wonderful lifestyle we received in the area. Did you know each other when you were growing up? We did; we met in Year 7 homeroom! We were good friends, but I lived at Diggers Beach and Matt was from Sawtell. It may as well have been two different countries in those days! We didn’t get together until the end of school. I like to say I've travelled around the world to end up back home with my childhood sweetheart - we even have a white picket fence! Briefly tell us a bit of background about what you both do and how you came to be involved in that industry ... We’re both television producers. Between us we’ve worked on various shows over the past 20 years. Discovery documentaries, Beyond 2000, MasterChef, Big Brother, The Amazing Race, and a stack of others - some we don’t mention! For the last couple of years I’ve worked in post production on The Block. I’m really

lucky; I have fantastic bosses who allow me to work from Sawtell. I have a home edit suite and fly down to the office as and when I’m needed. Matt actually trained and worked as a registered nurse. He fell into TV when I was working in San Francisco on MythBusters. Our sound recordist quit and we decided to train him up to take over. The rest, as they say, is history … Was MythBusters fun to work on? Fun is an understatement! We busted all kinds of wacky myths and got to blow lots of stuff up along the way! The highlight was in the Mojave Desert outside of LA - it’s an aeroplane graveyard. We purchased a fuselage for 10 grand and essentially blew it up to test whether a gun fired on a plane could blow a hole in the side. It can’t by the way - of course, this was all pre September 11 - I don’t think you’d get away with that these days. The greatest thing about MythBusters is that it’s an Australian idea, it’s Australian crew behind the scenes, and now it’s an international hit - that’s really satisfying. What have been some of the highlights of your careers? Highlights … too many to count … lowlights … a few of those too!

We hear you’re working on a documentary about the local Sawtell Cinema; tell us a bit about it? What’s happening with the Sawtell Cinema is a really important local story. We’re both huge supporters of the cinema being open again, and we think that process should be recorded. It’s our town’s history, and to be able to throw our skills into the ring and make a documentary is really exciting. Do you still get the same sense of excitement when you see a production that you have worked on, aired for the first time? Definitely. n fact, the Coffs Coast is being splashed in tourism information campaigns as part of The Legendary Pacific Coast (TLPC) touring route. The CSIRO has nominated the local region as having the world’s BEST climate! No wonder we can enjoy so much all year round! A fine example was staged at the Coffs Harbour Racecourse just recently. Usually Mother Nature can be a bit harsh for this annual event, but it turned out to be a great weekend, with everyone rugged up and perusing what the 4WD, Caravan and Camping Show had to offer. If you ever had the urge to tour around the countryside like the Leyland brothers ... (I’m sorry, couldn’t resist that!) Well, there was definitely something to tempt us all. Great show, as usual. Another annual event which is an outside affair was the Sawtell Women’s Bowling Club’s Major Minor Triples. Eighteen teams entered the competition, and a great day of bowls was enjoyed by all. Winners for the day were Marelene Sharman, Jan Formann and Nancy Little (Sawtell). Runners up for the competition were Kath McPhail and her team from Urunga. Third place getters were Isabel Petit and her team from Urunga. The ladies all enjoyed a fabulous lunch and a great day of their favourite sport. The next big event on the calendar for the Sawtell Ladies Bowling Club is Kojaks Festival of Bowls in July. They are expecting a great influx of visitors from all states throughout 60 coffs coast focus.

It may be getting a bit chilly, but it’s definitely not stopping the Coffs Coastians from enjoying the great outdoors.

Australia, and everyone is welcome to enter. Kirsten Howton’s Biggest Morning Tea Fashion Event was a massive success as usual. This annual charity event is held at the Bonville Golf Resort. The MCs for the day were Michael Crossland and the delightful Alice Williams. Entertainment came from the multi talented Christina Monneron, who has just been awarded the International Women’s Day Award. This lady can light up any stage; her vibrant spirit shines through in all her performances! A delicious morning tea was provided, as the ladies got to enjoy the fashion parade. House of Le Dãin Designs from Sawtell’s Show was opened by our Mayoress, Denise Knight. Fourteen dedicated ladies, who had four changes each, put so much into the show, and I would personally like to thank them all. A special thank you goes to Pauline, who was such an amazing help for the Le Dãin team from start to finish! Fashions flowed, from floating autumn kaftans, fabulous fur, gorgeous millinery, easy casual wear and dressy evening attire; the store certainly got to promote the fact that they can dress all ladies of all ages all sizes for any occasion. Parry’s Jewellers from Coffs Harbour literally glittered on stage, when they showcased their beautiful jewellery as part of the show. Their ladies were bejewelled to the max and certainly tempted the audience. So much effort goes into these events provided by so many people, and it proves we really are so very generous on the Coffs Coast!

For example, Emma Rhoades Photography was there again to snap all those fine times and happy memories. Beautiful flowers were provided by Flowers on First at Sawtell and hairdressers such as Michelle from “Hair at the Promenade” and makeup artists from the ever generous La Fleur D’Alyse Cosmetic Laser and Medispa donate their precious time. So many donations from so many people help these charity events make a difference. Kirsten’s event raised over $12,000 for the Cancer Council. We recently attended the launch of Warren and Kay Skinner’s “Cellar Lounge”. This is the next step in the journey of The Pier Hotel. All 16 boutique rooms have been renovated and completed. They are definitely something special; it’s just the place to reward yourself with some much needed R and R! So much time and effort has been put into renovating this amazing hotel. When chatting to Warren, he commented that all the timber that can be seen in the Cellar Lounge was dismantled from the building, sent to the local joinery and recycled into the Cellar Lounge. Beautiful features can be seen throughout. Guests attending the launch enjoyed bubbles and canapés, whilst celebrating the start of something special. We can’t wait to attend the next “Jetty Club Catch Up”, which is also being held at the Cellar Lounge at The Pier Hotel. Oh! I also forget to mention the bar has a delicious Tapas Menu and wood fire! Woohoo to that!

Beachfront Opal Cove Resort was the venue of choice for The Garrards Roadshow Pest Control Conference. This was a day out for the Pest Control Tradesmen. The seminar attracts tradesmen from this industry from far and wide and whilst the seminar was all about work, they all enjoyed a delicious meal as part of the roadshow. It’s not just the ladies that do lunch! Representing FOCUS, I arrived to a packed house at the C.ex Coffs for a BWN breakfast meeting. The guest speaker was Australian lawyer Lydia Shelly. Apart from being a lawyer in Sydney, she is a member of many civil liberties organisations, including the NSW Council for Civil Liberties. Guests got to enjoy a delicious breakfast whilst listening to this strong and inspirational woman. The next meeting will be a Christmas in July event with the outrageous Jean Kittson. The date to remember is Friday17th July from 6pm - 8:30pm. This one is definitely not to be missed! Nicci and I from FOCUS got dressed up to attend the Camp Quality Ladies Luncheon, which was held in the Jetty Harbour Room at Novotel Coffs Harbour Pacific Bay Resort. The event’s theme was “Giving Women a Voice”, and the inspiring guest speaker for the day was the effervescent Emma Alberici. The luncheon was in celebration of International Women’s Day and was certainly enjoyed by all. Carole, Le Dãin Designs.

hat types of things do you need to consider when renovating or designing a bathroom? First thing to decide on is whether to have a vanity unit or a pedestal and wall basin, or just a wall basin. If a vanity unit, is it to be floor or wall mounted and height is to be considered, also drawers and how many, and whether one, three or no tap holes. If retaining a bath, you have to consider whether a built-in or freestanding style and either plain or spa bath - again, consider style of bath for the cleaning aspect. Style of toilet is important and can be either conventional, back to wall or an “in wall” type of cistern. Bathroom mirrored cabinets can be considered in place of mirrors, which can be plain, or fashionable with lights, and even the radio system as an option. Tapware is a major consideration, as it can be conventional or mixers and can be wall or hob mounted, and a varied choice of styles and colours are available. Showers are a very personal choice and can be standard from wall, overhead from the ceiling on long or short arms and heads can be large or small with various functions, or can be on long slider rails with removable hand pieces.

Accent Bathroom and Kitchen Centre belongs to an Australian National Buying Group of over 100 independent stores, with the buying power allowing them to be the most competitive store in the Coffs Harbour area on warranted quality products. The large difference is, of course, that both businesses are locally owned, and Coffs Harbour benefits because of that. What local businesses do you work with that can help with your renovations and kitchen/bathroom design? Accent Bathroom and Kitchen Centre work with the majority of designers and architects in the area, and Sawtell Kitchen Centre do all their own designing in house on the CAD design system and work with locally produced bench tops, timber doors and splashbacks. Both businesses service the entire Coffs Coast, Bellingen and Nambucca Council areas. What do you and your husband love about living on the Coffs Coast? In the 39 years we have lived here, we have seen the area grow from a small country town with no traffic lights to what it is today. Like most people, we love the climate and the environment and are proud to say our children and grandchildren still reside in the area. During our business years our customers have given us much joy, as they return again and again, and wonderful acquaintances have been formed - which is unique to a local family owned business.

Our finance and construction departments have great influence over this decision; however, ultimately it is the responsibility of our sales department to source the land with the best interests of our clients in mind. Our clients desire properties with close proximity to local shopping centres, schools, hospitals and transport. These areas need to be well regarded safe areas of the community and suit the market with land price, so that we can offer a great value completed home.

Consultation is held with the local Councils, developers, property valuers and real estate agents to seek advice on the area as well as conducting further research, so that we are comfortable to offer each property to our valued clients. live invest With two dwellings behind this one facade, the Live Invest plan offers a great dual income opportunity! The main dwelling comprises three good sized bedrooms - the master bedroom, with its own private ensuite and walk in robe, while the other two bedrooms are equipped with built in wardrobes that include hanging space and shelving. The main bathroom includes sleek vanity, shower, bath and toilet suite. The carpeted formal living room is separate from the open kitchen/family/dining area for more private entertaining, while the flow from the dining room continues out to the covered alfresco for desired outdoor living. modern stainless steel appliances and a good sized walk in pantry. Single garage with remote control and internal access. The second dwelling is a granny flat style accommodation incorporating two bedrooms with built in wardrobes, a main bathroom and an open plan kitchen/dining/living area that opens onto a large covered alfresco, also with its own garage, space and remote control for automatic operation. Each with their own separate landscaped and fenced back yards; this is a neat design filled with great versatility.

Clearview Every time you arrive at this home, you will be impressed by its grand facade. A great deal of design and market research has taken place to produce this modern home, which in fact is a dual residence. Hibbards are creating affordable housing, and with this design both residents get the advantage of its impressive appearance - without the price tag that one

would predict to be attached. These two dwellings are combined to create a magnificent looking home, yet each has its privacy and plenty of space to feel like it’s freestanding. The dwellings are joined by a common wall that has been built for safety and complete privacy. The four bedroom dwelling has its entrance at the front, while the three bedroom dwelling has an

entrance to the side. Both are greeted with the formal living room upon entering. As you walk through, you will find each of the homes make great use of space, including the combined kitchen, dining and family room, which then flows neatly out to the covered alfresco area and onto the private backyard. All bedrooms have built in wardrobes, with the master

bedroom having the convenience of its own ensuite. The kitchen has a walk in pantry and plenty of bench space at the breakfast bar. This package is fantastic value for any purchaser and can be a combined purchase of both dwellings, or each can be purchased separately for greater affordability.
