Billie-Jo Porter is a singer/songwriter whose uplifting, fun vibe shines through in her music. You can find her playing lots of regular gigs at home here on the Coffs Coast and she has recently recorded and released some exciting new music.

H

i Billie-Jo. Can you tell us a bit of the back story as to how you got into writing and recording music?

I guess it all began in school at Quirindi, I really enjoyed singing and took advantage of every opportunity to have a sing.

When I moved to Tamworth I became friends with Rachael Kennedy, she was playing guitar and writing songs and I was so inspired. I had to be part of it, so I bought a bass and got some lessons and joined the band!

I hung out in Tamworth for a few years but ended up heading to Perisher Blue for snowboarding, then I chased that rainbow all the way to live in North America for several years. I started writing my first song in the carpark of a Walmart, just singing about my experiences travelling. That first song opened a can of worms and I have been writing ever since.

When my partner Kyle and I moved to the Coffs Coast I linked up with Mark Bergin and Peter Clarke in Bellingen for the music project Quasi Dada. We had a fantastic time experimenting a lot with sounds and songwriting and released a few music videos and an EP. We had a few great wins with a

Working with Pete and Mark inspired me to start gigging so I could get better at playing and entertaining.

Being able to test out the new songs we had written in a live setting was so important to building my confidence as a songwriter.

How would you describe your style of music?

That is a tricky question! I grew up loving the stories in country music like Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Brooks and Dunn, John

Williamson, and the queen herself Shania Twain.

I also loved listening to hit radio and also singer/songwriters like Carole King, Joni Mitchell and James Taylor. I also went down a rabbit hole of The Waifs, Jack Johnson, Bonnie Raitt and Michael Franti.

So when it comes to writing my own songs, I can draw from a wide variety of influences.

It is hard to pin down my sound, but it could be described as a singer/songwriter that fits somewhere between Folk Rock, Roots and Alternative Country.

You write a lot of your own songs, what is the writing process like for you from an idea to a finished song?

I write all the songs I release either solo or with friends. Inspiration for me comes from everywhere and anywhere. I always have a notebook handy for lyrics and ideas along with my voice memos on my phone.

Sometimes if I have something big going on and there are a lot of emotions involved, I will channel that into a song. Basically, I just have to be open and ready at any time for inspiration.

Sometimes in a co-write we might just start talking between us about what is going on at the moment and someone will say something, then we will decide to write about that.

about connecting with like minded people and writing songs non-stop for the duration of the retreat. Co-writing online has been really great to connect with songwriters all around the world.

I am really proud to have worked with some amazing artists on songs that have been recorded and released to radio including: Kylie Gale recorded a song we wrote together called ‘Upside Down’ and it is a really uplifting song that has a Sugarland vibe. It got some fantastic radio play around Australia.

Andrew Swift and I wrote a real barn burner called ‘Head Full of Honey’ which peaked at No.7 on The Music Network’s Hot 50 Airplay and is one of the tracks on his 2022 Golden Guitar nominated album, Art of Letting Go. There are a few more in the pipes for next year, so stay tuned!

Can you tell us about some of the songs you’ve released recently and anything else you’ve got in the works?

I am so excited about the music I have released! I am absolutely thrilled to have worked with multiple Golden Guitar and Aria Award winner Shane Nicholson, who produced my music at The Sound Hole studios on The Central Coast. You created a film clip recently for your song ‘Feels Like Us’, what was that experience like?

We had the best fun creating the ‘Feels Like Us’ film clip. The video was filmed at the historic Marrickville Town Hall under the direction of Bruce Dawson and Lawrence Lim from Tribal Apes.

WOOD FinCo

Manny and Jake come from two seemingly very different working backgrounds, but they do share a love of surfing. They have come together and combined their range of skills to come up with a very unique way of cra ing sur oard fins.

W

ood + Water FinCo are attracting attention from surfers all over and have received lots of positive feedback, including from a local world champion surfer.

Hey Jake and Manny, how did your paths cross?

Manny had been working in his shed for years where he creates beautiful timber baths and vanities, when he was approached to create surfboard fins in mid-2019 by Surf Hardware International and FCS. Jake was teaching computer-aided design at TAFE, and mucking around with 3D Modelling and CNC technologies when a mutual friend mentioned there may be a chance to collaborate. We met and discussed the project and Jake decided to purchase a Computer Numerically Controlled Router and Laser, a special piece of equipment used for 3D shaping and engraving the fins.

Timber is a typically unstable material, and has presented us with many challenges on our journey so far. We have experimented with a range of timber species so far and are always learning. Using resins means we are able to incorporate infinite colour tints and set items inside the fins to make them truly unique.

We have had a lot of good feedback regarding our driftwood, pencil and cork pieces and have some cool projects in the pipeline to incorporate works from other local artists. The core of the fin can be reinforced appropriately by adding the desired amount of fibreglass, balancing flex and longevity, meaning the way we are creating the fins has many possibilities.

What would be the dream, taking Wood + Water FinCo into the future?

Wood + Water FinCo has become our favourite part-time creative outlet, and escape from our regular jobs! We love the fact that we can combine creative and individualised concepts that showcase different material ideas, functionality, aesthetics, our craftsmanship and, of course, surfing!

DESIGN TRENDS FOR 2022 he past 12 months have unquestionably highlighted the relationship between our homes and wellbeing and the value of creating spaces that are comfortable, calming, enjoyable

and functional.

In 2022 those sentiments are set to continue with a focus on creating homes and spaces that not only look good but also make us feel good.

As we welcome the new year, here are this year’s interior trends to consider for your home: 1. Curves that Comfort This year we will see the continuance of curves in furniture, soft furnishings and design. Curves are soft to the eye and can feel less stressful than angular shapes. Curves help us relate to our natural environment and can create an overall feel that is relaxed and comfortable. Think rounded or barrel occasional chairs, curvy sofas, round or organic shaped mirrors, waterfall corners on desks, round ottomans and gentle curves in kitchen and bathroom design. This distinctly feminine theme can help create a space that feels cosy, safe and soft.

2. Natural Hues and Organic Textures Research shows that natural colour schemes and organic forms like those found in nature can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, increase productivity and creativity, and can make us happier. Neutral and natural colours never go out of style and this year our interiors will continue to become more about a connection with the natural environment, using a natural colour palette combined with our personal expression. 3. Luxurious Textiles To balance the neutral and warm tones in rooms, adding beautiful textiles can help create a more elegant feel, texture and depth to a space. One way you can achieve this is through layering with different fabrics, for example using textured throws and patterned beautiful cushions on a bed or sofa. Choose a colour theme and work within those tones.

4. Sustainable Materials, Upcycling and LocallyMade Products Now more than ever we focus on sustainability and eco-friendly materials in furniture, products, lighting and in how we design spaces. Materials that are reclaimed, recycled and ethically sourced are increasingly sought after. Our growing awareness of the environmental impact of buying mass-produced items has resulted in consumers embracing sustainability and upcycling. Sourcing furniture from second-hand online platforms or vintage stores, and searching for furniture made from recycled materials is becoming increasingly popular. People are also reupholstering old furniture or sourcing quality second-hand furniture and having it reupholstered in quality Australian fabrics and opting for more eco-friendly fabrics like linen. These one-off pieces add character and create a unique look.

Choosing locally handmade products, vintage items plus keeping our furniture for longer is also ultimately better for the environment.

5. Connection with Nature The nature-inspired trend reveals our desire to connect with nature and this is set to become more sophisticated during 2022 as we use more interesting plants and features like

garden-inspired wallpaper and wicker furniture.

Our focus on calming green and blue hues can be attributed to our growing love of indoor plants, our desire to connect with the environment and to create calming interiors with natural lighting, ventilation and a visual connection with nature.

After many of us have been shut inside during 2021, there will be a continuance of regaining our connection with nature via interiors using indoor plants and natural materials like rattan basketware and terracotta.

6. Multifunctional Spaces and Furniture Due to our collective experience of spending more time at home than ever before, this year we will continue to focus on creating homes that are an oasis where we want to spend time even if we don’t need to spend as much time.

Multifunctional spaces and furniture have allowed us to transform our loungeroom and bedrooms into home offices, studies and creative spaces for hobbies to meet our family’s needs. Statement furniture where functionality, practicality and aesthetics are equally as important, provide us with versatility and flexibility to adapt to different living situations.

This is especially important for smaller homes and spaces and allows us to easily transform a daytime workspace into a comfortable area to live and relax in.

Coffs Coast PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians And Gays) is a group of volunteers or allies who have either a child, friend or family member that they love who they want to support in the best way they know how. This acronym is global and whilst it only mentions a few under the LGBTIQ community it includes everyone in our rainbow family. Let’s make 2022 our time to shine and step in to support those around us!

anuary is a great time to make new starts, new beginnings and take a really good look at ourselves. It’s a time for a change for the better and to really re-evaluate what excites us and what sustainable changes we can make! I really believe this also translates to our attitudes - hitting that reset button! It’s often geared around things like giving up a bad habit or a health change, but have you ever thought about what you can do to be more to be a part of your community? I know we are all so busy - for me it is full time work and also running my own small business most weekends but I must say it is so satisfying to be able to actually make a difference in someone’s life being a part of a voluntary cause. This has been my experience with working in PFLAG too. I love those conversations in the street, on the phone or randomly conversing at events. I think 26 COFFS COAST

These may be related to family conflict or where other disappointments feel even stronger, such as a lack of family or friends to rely on, or questioning relationships.

we all love connection and Covid has robbed us of that human faceto-face for two years now - it’s who we are as humans and I have so many people who now say to me that they have relatives, a child or friends who are gay or transgender, and they want to know how to best support that person.

Sometimes just meeting with like-minded people or people in exactly the same situation as yourself is perfect. I am sure that’s the foundation of why these groups work. In 2022 I am revisiting more ways to entice anyone out there who would like to explore our group, that is growing in numbers too, to not be shy and

come along and meet new friends and share. It is a safe group where we meet and chat casually and share our stories and the feedback so far has been great. I welcome all ideas whether it is speakers, fundraisers etc but let’s make it easy, fun yet meaningful for everyone.

So Happy New Year and wishing everyone a great 2022.

Let’s sprinkle a bit of love and tolerance around at the same time!

Pandora Colledge has years of experience in health and wellbeing through her training in nutrition and fitness, and has been providing workshops to pass on some of that knowledge for some time now. And now, she has just released a new book, Nourished By Nature, that further shares some of her favourite recipes and wisdom.

i Pandora. You are both a qualified Nutritionist and Personal Trainer, how long have you been working in this field?

I became a personal trainer back in 2001 and qualified as Nutritionist in 2010 and Graduated as a vegan chef in 2016. I guess I have been working in this field for the last 20 years. Wow… Time flies when you are having fun. To be honest, Personal Training was really a stepping stone into my passion with food and has been a useful tool as a holistic approach to health and wellbeing alongside my Nutrition and Chef qualifications.

Is health and wellbeing something that has always been a priority for you personally?

Absolutely. I think I have always “walked my talk”. And life is about balance also. I do believe that food is our medicine and can be your poison. I am really not about diet culture and counting numbers. It is about getting the best out of your body to be able to do all the things you want to do. A little bit of coffee and red wine is also OK. Emotional health regarding food and health is also very important. My 30 COFFS COAST

inspiration these days comes from the lifestyles of Blue Zone people who eat predominantly plant based food and are inclusive as a culture, a bit of wine here and there and some dancing and good stress coping strategies.

Can you tell us a bit about what you offer through Pandora’s Plate?

I love doing workshops and teaching people some great principles about health and how to make healthy choices and create some simple and healthy recipes. I also provide private consultations, provide a service to NDIS clients and I write Cook Books now! I do have an

ulterior motive to change the world one bite at a time.

You have just released your first book! Can you tell us about where the plan for this book came from?

This idea was conceived about 30 years ago and I am so glad I waited this long to bring it out. I have a well rounded knowledge and understanding of health, wellbeing and nutrition now which is what I have brought to this book. I have always wanted to share my recipes as they are all developed with love and nutritional wisdom. My focus has been about

bringing more plants to your plate for your health and the planet, as planetary wellbeing is directly tied in with our food production and consumption.

You self-funded and published this book, what was that process like?

That was a whole new learning curve and I had some excellent advice from my beautiful friend who also is a self-published Author, Wendy Haynes. It is a whole lot of work but at the end of this project I knew everything inside out and it really gave me a good perspective on my whole project, and I certainly have a great appreciation for all self-published and We need to self-funded Authors. Two Tail Wines and Velvets Restaurant were based on something that you would see in the Hunter Valley or Margaret River. We wanted to bring the style and atmosphere of those locations to the Coffs Coast, with a completely different style of food and service that Coffs had had previously. Two Tails is open Wednesday to Sunday for lunch. We do night dining on special occasions.

Tell us more about the Cellar Door at Two Tails Wines?

Visitors are able to enjoy a range of locally produced wines made from grapes grown on site.

Two Tails vineyard has been operational for 30 years and showcases a unique variety of grapes such as Villard Blanc, Chambourcin, Jaquez along with other more familiar styles like Chardonnay and Muscat. Entering our cellar door, visitors are met by one of our helpful and engaging staff and are welcome to enjoy a wine tasting conducted by one of

BARREL RUN

Jaie and his wife Jade have always enjoyed visiting wineries and distilleries themselves on their travels up and down the East Coast, so when they started seeing potential in the high quality producers here on the Coffs Coast they decided to launch their own tours, and The Barrel Run has been received by the community with excitement and enthusiasm.

H

i Jaie. How did you first come up with the idea for The Barrel Run? My wife, Jade, and I have always loved doing fun things on our holidays, including experiencing the unique flavours that the artisan distilleries, wineries and breweries on our east coast had to offer. We really appreciated how passionate the brewers and distillers were about their products and the processes they used to produce their products. The dream was to bring something unique to our area and we had been pondering on the idea of a tour for a few years.

What was it that made you decide to leap right in and start this business?

We saw the market growing and knew there was going to be demand for something like this, and it was either us or someone else in time, so we jumped straight in “guns 36 COFFS COAST

a-blazing”. For us, it was all about the timing. Two Tails Winery was already established then in 2020 Critters Distillery opened up, producing the smoothest, award-winning vodka. We thought to ourselves “this could be the start of something good, we just need some local breweries”.

This was answered in 2021 when we heard that Woopi Brewing Co. and King Tide Brewing were under construction. Looking at one another we thought “This is it!”

After you decided to get these tours started, what was involved in getting yourselves up and running?

As everyone knows, a lot goes on behind the scenes before any business gets off the ground. We sat down over a locally distilled gin and came up with our name and the business plan. I knew Chris and Nicola from Critters, through working in construction, so we called them and asked what they thought of the idea of the tours. With some

positive feedback in our pocket, we set out to make the dream come to life, beginning our collaboration with the venues. Word about the venture was leaked and before we had the van or a website, we had locals contacting us for bookings! Once the vibe grew, we wanted to start touring before Christmas so we set about making that happen. We built every part of the business ourselves including procuring the bus from Brisbane in the middle of a Covid lockdown, the design and colour scheme of the branding and promotional products, the social media campaigns and the website – Jade is just a machine and just never quits!

What were you looking for when deciding on the venues you would include in the tour?

Ideally, we hoped to tour the whole of the Coffs Coast from the coastline and its lifestyle to the hinterland and the gorgeous countryside that never fails to amaze.

Conveniently, our tour venues are located perfectly to allow us to create the tour we envisioned. We wanted to provide something for everyone’s tastes but also wanted to create a new and exciting experience that encouraged people to step outside of the box and try new things. All of the venues we visit are passionate about our local area, supporting local business and sustainability and their products are outstanding.

What are some of the locally made beverages that people can sample with The Barrel Run? Critters have their ‘World Drinks Awards’ Silver award winning Vodka, their delicious Gin and more unique goodies on the way but our lips are sealed! Woopi Brewing Co. are producing quality, refreshing ales and lagers that really hit the spot, with their lager becoming a bestseller. Two Tails Wines have a great tasting paddle to enjoy while taking in the fantastic view of the vineyard after taking in the fresh hinterland air, and King Tide Brewing have a massive selection with their Bonny Lass making its mark as their mid-strength nitro infused beer but they have

some real heavy hitters on the menu too!

hat is the Liquor Accord? The Coffs Harbour Liquor Accord (CHLA) has been developed as a partnership involving the input and cooperation of the key stake holders. It is based on harm minimisation and Responsible Service of Alcohol principles (RSA) contained within the liquor laws.

The underpinning strategy is to address community issues by community members in a proactive way that will deliver best outcomes for all parties including local licensees, Police, Transport for NSW, MNC Area Health Service, CHCC, licensing authorities, the business community, residents and visitors.

Who is involved? Any licensed premises or business involved in activities within the industry is invited to join. Traditionally our members include all pubs, clubs and bottle shops in the LGA, however we also have event centres,

resorts, small bars and restaurants as members.

The CHLA is an incorporated association with a constitution and a yearly membership fee.

Local police and council representatives are also present and provide relevant data and feedback at our meetings. In 2021 we have 41 Members and these are listed on our website.

What do you encourage venues to implement in accordance? As a member you are expected to operate within the elected CHLA Terms. The terms include agreement to enforce lock-out times, RSA practices and more recently the MVB policy adopted by the accord.

The MVB policy sets out that any person who behaves poorly in any of the licenced premises can be banned from all accord venues for between 1 and 3 years. We currently have 90 local people on this list who are not welcome in our premises. Local Police endorse this policy and actively participate in serving barring notices to individuals. Additionally anyone under 18 found consuming alcohol on a licenced premises will be barred until they turn 19.

H

i Karen, when did you first become interested in cookery as a career?

I spent a lot of time in the kitchen as a kid, I learnt really quickly you got to taste test if you were being a helper, both my Mum and Nan were good cooks.

What training did you undertake and where was your first job?

I got a job as a dishwasher at Beach Hut Restaurant at Nautilus Resort when I was 12 and fell in love with the whole performance of cooking and presenting food. I started my apprenticeship at 14 and completed in the local area. In the early years of my career I honed my skills locally, then it was time to travel both nationally and internationally. I tried my hand at everything French, Italian, Greek, Vietnamese, Fine Dining, Patisserie, Buffet Cafes, Restaurants, Bistros, even mass catering in the mines. The best thing about this career is you never know everything, you’re always learning something new.

Where do you source new ideas from?

When creating a menu my inspiration comes from everywhere:

- The seasons - Availability of produce - Media, magazines, Facebook - Good old fashioned cookbooks - Chatting with people about what they’re eating, what they may like to see on the menu.

I love all cooking shows, even the bad ones can give you ideas. I’m addicted to Asian Cuisine. Their ingredients are amazing, I find it a challenge to recreate their dishes and to create my own using their flavors. Using fresh herbs and spices is a must for me.

What is your favourite dish on the menu currently and why?

We run a summer and winter menu.

I feel it’s important to change the menu regularly to keep both the customers and our staff excited about the food we are producing. there are some items we always have... you cant remove the all time favorites. I have featured two of our most popular dishes – The Buddha Bowl, our vegetarian goodies bowl which changes on a daily basis and most days it is also vegan. BBQ Pork Ribs & Buffalo Wings Combo – you can also purchase them separately.

Moonee Hotel has undergone a massive upgrade – tell us more? Since taking over in July we immediately wanted to make some fresh changes to the hotel.

As everyone knows, Daryl Braithwaite is an iconic Australian singer and songwriter and ARIA Hall Of Fame Inductee. He was the front man and vocalist for 1970’s band Sherbet, riding a wave of local and international success with songs such as Howzat and Summer Love propelling the band to superstar status. Daryl Braithwaite is gracing our shores again in January 2022 at the Moonee Hotel and I am so excited to be able to chat to Daryl directly!

aryl, Jon Stevens has been quoted this week as saying “it’s so great to see the world going around again” – how great is it to see the return of live music for you?

So great – it is for everyone because it is what we do and is so enjoyable. Recently we did do a live stream gig. It’s my first one as I didn’t really do them during Covid and now I know why!

We did this for the Doctors of NSW but the fact is that you play the song and then finish and then no applause – we love the applause – I’m thinking “we must be going bad or something, there is no reaction!” My friend James Reyne felt the same way as there is no feedback or reaction so it feels very strange.

You really are an Aussie icon – the song “Horses” which reached #1 on the ARIA Singles Chart and to this day remains an anthem for generations of Australians. I know you are well known for this song, but what is your personal favourite ?

I think the one that I love is “As The Days Go By” – it’s my first single on my Edge album and I wonder if it wasn’t picked up and supported then I wonder where I would be now. I look at Howzat and how much the crowd loved this and it goes back to 1976 with Sherbet and how that song was such a turning point in my life too.

How did you spend Covid and the lockdowns?

We had six lockdowns in Melbourne so the good side for me was I got to talk to my son, Oscar, more and our relationship has got so much better over the last two years so that was a plus. I live 5km from him but he would say (laughs) after a while on the visit “Now Dad go home, sit quietly, watch some TV and I’ll speak to you tomorrow!” I’m sure we will look back on this time and wonder how we got through, I cannot wait until it’s over.

I saw you have purchased a vibraslap, an instrument to use in your famous song Horses and I also saw it was derived from a jaw bone of a donkey and the teeth made the distinctive rattle sound! Are you looking forward to adding that into your song Horses?

Well, this year after we announced the engagement, I thought it would be nice to do a show full of love. We need all the positivity we can get right now and there are so many beautiful love songs to choose from, I thought it might be a feel good thing to do.

What sort of songs can fans expect to hear?

I’ll be performing some of my original love songs, songs I’ve written for Mark and Sullivan, some of the songs from my album Great Women of Country, like ‘Love Hurts’. Some classic songs like Joni Mitchell’s ‘Both Sides Now’ and Elton’s ‘Sorry Seems to Be The Hardest Word’, classic pop songs like ‘Say A Little Prayer For You’ and ‘Natural Woman’ and some jazz standards like Natalie Cole’s ‘L.O.V.E’… there are so many!

What is your favourite all time love song and why?

Ooooh, that’s a tough question – Bonnie Raitt’s ‘I Can’t Make You Love Me’ has to be up there.

What is 2022 looking like for Melinda Schneider?

Positive! Getting back on the road and doing what I love and getting married to my soul mate, it doesn’t get any better than that!

JIMEOIN If you’re ready for a good laugh this summer, Jimeoin is coming to Coffs Harbour on 13th January! We caught up with him ahead of his latest tour, here is what he had to say.

H

i Jimeoin. You’re about to start a tour of Australia and the UK, it must be nice to be hitting the road and touring again. How long has it been since you were able to tour overseas?

Yes I’ve actually been overseas for the last two months. I’ve been in the UK, I did 36 shows in 6 weeks. That was the first tour I’ve been able to do in a long time, it was nice to get back to the UK, it was autumn, I had a good time. I’m looking forward to getting back out touring here in Australia too.

You’ve been doing this comedy thing for a while now, how do you still manage to come up with new material?

I’m almost always writing new material, between shows. You have to just continually try things out, see what works. I get bored of doing the same material over and over again, so I’m always looking for new ideas in the everyday. Sometimes things work and sometimes they don’t! I don’t write much when I’m on a tour though, you need to stay in the rhythm of the current act. It’s a bit like learning a dance; if you’ve got all the moves in your mind and then you have to learn a new dance, you forget the first routine!

The Lillipilli Art Prize is an annual event that is hosted by the Woolgoolga Art Gallery and attracts entrants from all over the Mid North Coast.

Pottery Paradise entered a prize-winning piece to this year’s show and we caught up with Vicki Bartlett, who brought the group together, about their piece and their experience being part of the show.

ou are one part of Pottery Paradise, can you tell us about the group and how you started working together?

I run pottery classes at the Woolgoolga Art Gallery, where the Lillipilli Art Prize is held. Normally, it’s three classes of different levels, but I wanted to find a way to bring all the students together, and from that idea, Pottery Paradise was formed.

Anyone who joins the pottery classes is invited to participate in Pottery Paradise, from beginners to advanced students. It’s a fantastic way for the students to be part of an exhibition in a commercial gallery setting. To work together on a project is very special. I’ve found when working alongside

hair accessories and homewares in a range of colours and designs. I love it because the techniques are very similar to pottery, so I started with confidence. I was recently invited to display my Corindi Clay pieces at Kaleidoscope Collective Emporium in Coffs Harbour, which is very exciting.

In the past, I’ve worked with glass mosaic, acrylic painting, textiles, cake decoration, macrame, soap! I love to explore new mediums to see what happens. I especially enjoy making things that have a purpose, that people can wear and use.

Pottery Paradise entered the Lillipilli Art Prize at Woolgoolga Gallery recently, what made you decide to enter this exhibition?

This is the third year we’ve entered; it gets better every year! We like to support the Woolgoolga Art Gallery as we run the classes through it, and they are wonderful. Giving my students the opportunity to work towards something as a team is also a special feeling.

It fosters a sense of purpose, collaboration, and motivation. We work as a team, and all learn something from each other.

Can you describe the piece you entered?

‘Rainforest to the Sea’ is a conglomeration of individual terracotta clay pieces we installed on an old cupboard door. It’s

I’ve been back several times since then just to really take in the other works. It’s so energising to see what other artists have been working on, what they’re inspired by.

Can you tell us about how you went at Lillipilli?

We won the 2D category! We all cheered, we were just so excited. In the three times we’ve entered, we’ve had a Highly Commended and a win, so we’re very happy

about that.

It’s always so great to meet up with like-minded creatives.

As artists, we’re driven by similar values and it’s always interesting to see what other people come up with. Especially after a big year of isolation and working remotely on our projects, being able to finally get together and celebrate a win was very special. I’ve been back several times since then just to really take in the other works. It’s so energising to see what other artists have been working on, what they’re inspired by. This year it was noticed that many of the artists have worked on different types of mediums and have stretched their creative minds.

Lillipilli was postponed this year from September to December because of Covid restrictions, next year it will be scheduled back to September so Artists should put Lillipilli in their calendars for next year. The gallery are anticipating that their annual major exhibition will go from strength to strength and it was noted by the judges this year that the artworks were of a very high standard, making the gallery an exciting place to visit and should be on the tourist map for a visit, so whether you’re local or you are visiting the Coffs Coast this Christmas make sure you visit the Woolgoolga Art Gallery which is located at Turon Pde, Woolgoolga. You will not be disappointed.

Mid North Coast Physio is pleased to be launching its Community Care program, which will deliver a physio directly to your home, office, workplace or school to provide the care you need. We caught up with Aaron Hardaker, director of Mid North Coast Physio, to find out more.

What is Community Care?

The MNC Community Care program is our way of taking the caring, friendly, and highquality healthcare the Coffs Coast community knows and loves from our 4 clinic locations and making it more easily available to those who need it. We’ve recently had Ray Chen, an experienced and multi-talented physio, join our team to head up the Community Care program and ensure we have a dedicated therapist on the road to reach clients across the Coffs Coast.

Who will benefit from the Community Care program?

We understand some of the most vulnerable in our community are the ones who have the least access to the services they need. Our aim is to provide targeted care and support to clients at home including individuals and families suffering with pain, older adults including those with Home Care Packages, people living with a disability including those funded under NDIS, and those in our community living with chronic disease who can’t access our clinics. We can also provide services for post-operative rehab after hospital discharge along with workplace visits for injury prevention and injury management services as well as schools.

Who will be providing the Community Care services in homes and workplaces?

As mentioned, we’ve recently had Ray Chen join our team to head up the Community Care program. Before recently moving to Coffs Harbour, Ray worked primarily as a musculoskeletal/sports physiotherapist and clinical Pilates instructor.

He was the Head Physiotherapist at North Shore Mariners, also working at Central Coast Mariners and Manly United Football Club where he gained plenty of experience in the treatment and prevention of sporting injuries. Ray had a serious accident a few years ago that prevented him from working as a private clinician, but in his recovery found a passion for mental health and mindfulness. This led him to complete his Psychology degree and start his PhD in Mindfulness and Pain. He is so grateful for this life-changing experience as it allows him to now support his clients in both the mental and physical aspects of pain/ rehab management in his Physiotherapy work. Along with being a physio, Ray is also a Mindfulness Teacher and Researcher.

Together We Groove is a fun and unique dance experience for adults. It is a mix of guided but also creative dance, where we UNITE in very simple movements or rhythms and then you get to dance it in your own UNIQUE way. This is a class where you can’t get it wrong!

Together We Groove originates from The World Groove Movement by Misty Tripoli.

Misty inspired me by her inclusive and body positive dance classes for all ages, sizes and fitness levels and I thought... Everyone needs to try this! And every BODY can do it. There is nothing stopping you.

What type of music or dance genres do you usually explore?

Every class consists of many different music genres, you will experience everything from slow, delicious, meditative grooves to heart thumping and strength building cardio beats. Each song has 2-3 simple steps that are taught and then you are invited to bring your unique style to your moves. The perfect recipe to nurture your body, mind, heart and soul.

You are also a local doctor, how do you go about doing both? And what do you enjoy about doing the two very different jobs?

Being a GP, I love that I see people from all ages and walks of life, empowering them in the health of their bodies. Together We Groove is also about empowering people, especially women, to love their bodies, right

now. To feel good moving your body in delicious ways and to be grateful for your amazing body that can move.

I think they go together nicely... For me, my day job is very sedentary, so I love the movement that Together We Groove brings to my life! I feel like dance is more important than ever to get people moving, connecting and having fun at the same time.

We all know the health benefits of keeping active, in your experience what do you think often holds people back and prevents them from trying some exercise?

Fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of looking weird, fear of being uncoordinated, fear of not being fit enough, fear of getting it wrong.

Together We Groove is great because in this class, we embrace our differences, we are meant to look different! The focus is on bringing our own style to the dance in a no pressure environment. It is about starting from where you are now, no preparation needed.

What has some of the feedback been

like after people attend Together We Groove?

Feedback from my beautiful participants has been that they dance more at home or whilst walking on the beach now, I love this!

Also, the benefits of better coordination and balance in other activities in their lives, so important as we get older. And the awesome social connection from dancing and having fun with others, we all need a bit more of that right now.

What benefits have you noticed amongst people that attend?

I notice that people become more confident and creative in their bodies as they do more classes. They start to explore other possibilities of movement and style as the fear falls away and confidence builds. This brings me so much joy.

he holidays are upon us now, long lazy days relaxing, well sometimes! As parents, these sometimes moments are few and far between. The longed-for quiet moments may be interrupted by parents’ raised voices and stress levels for both parents and children. Creating harmony over the long summer holidays can be difficult, and how do we navigate a less stressful option?

As parents, we need to set our own boundaries and schedules. It isn’t easy, but we need to recognise we are not personally responsible for meeting everyone’s expectations.

Use this time as a learning opportunity to develop your child’s competence in shared decision making by holding a family meeting to discuss options. Each person identifies the most important thing or event that makes the holidays special for them. Schedule these priorities on your family calendar. Remember the positive parenting tools of acknowledgment, praise and appreciation. Acknowledgement- “I noticed you all listened well to each other”; Praise- “You all did a fantastic job working together” and Appreciation- “Thank you for a productive conversation, we have lots of things to look forward to in the holidays”.

Parents need to relinquish control when it comes time for their child’s scheduled event (I know this is hard!) Yes, parents would have planned the day differently than the child; however, if we lean into the experience and have fun, you will see the joy and love in your child’s eyes; it will be worth it. New ideas can sometimes bring families the beginnings of new traditions.

Sometimes our everyday routines go astray during the holidays. However, is it important to remember how important routines are for families and children. Daily routines assist families to run more smoothly. Provide children with a sense of security, develop life skills and build healthy habits. Good routines are well planned, regular and predictable, and help families feel organised and less stressed. Discuss what routines are essential to maintain within your families, such as bedtimes, rest and quiet times, daily jobs; hopefully, these conversations will minimise arguments.

The holidays can be difficult for anyone touched by divorce/separation, a family member’s death, loss, family disagreements, or other significant family changes. Holidays can be especially difficult for children and teenagers as they may have to split time between households or spend time with stepparents or stepsiblings. If your family has gone through a recent change, it is important to encourage children and teenagers to talk about their feelings.

Acknowledge their feelings and let them know their feelings are normal. Remind them it is alright to express their frustration, and it is okay to cry. Rather than argue or try to change your child’s feelings, accept their feelings. When emotions are strong, “be with” your child. Sit quietly with your child after acknowledging and accepting your child’s feelings. Using the three steps of acknowledging, accepting, and “being with” assists the child to process their emotions rather than suppressing them. Feelings are just feelings, and all are acceptable, however not all behaviours. Released emotions lead to healthy

functioning, mental health, resilience, less physical and emotional pain and difficulties.

As adults, we also need to acknowledge our feelings and that being a parent can be messy, imperfect, and acceptable. When we feel frustrated, threatened or angry, adrenaline is released into our bloodstream. Adrenaline is responsible for the sensations we feel when under threat – increased heart rate, hotness from the increase in blood flow, rapid breathing and sharpening of our senses. When threat activates stress, we often lose our ability to ‘think’ or speak during conflict or stress. We may sometimes say things in the ‘heat of the moment’ later regretting what we have said. Fortunately, we can restore physiological and emotional responses by implementing a few strategies.

A few tips to assist in staying calm under pressure include; name your feeling out loud, such as “I’m feeling frustrated.” Announce the steps you are going to take to calm down, say out loud “I’m going to sit down, breathe slowly and think about how to solve the problem.”

These calming strategies contain powerful antiadrenaline properties that assist our body to reset to a calm state. These strategies also provide an excellent model for your children to learn to calm themselves down.

DANIEL SMITH 8 WEEK CHALLENGE WINNER This past 8 weeks I took part in the Anytime Fitness 8 week challenge thanks to Anytime Fitness for putting on our challenge. Even through the hail storm that ripped apart the roof we were able to train at Coffs Harbour Anytime Fitness. Most of the credit goes to my PT Jake O’Brien putting together a very personal and effective training program and diet plan that I followed to the tee (plus regular check ins). I was able to go from 93kg and 16% body fat and finished off at 102kg and 10% body fat! Also special thanks to Anytime Fitness Manager Callie for running the 8 week challenge, putting those gold stars up every session made me more accountable! CALLIE Most of you know me as the club manager of Anytime Fitness, few of you know I was a foundation member of the club first, you may just have not recognised me. My starting weight was 106kg when I started training at Anytime Fitness, my body weight now sits between 70-75kg. I went from avoiding social events to being a competitive powerlifter and rugby union player, however, my biggest and favourite transformation has been my quality of mental health. DR MARILYN CLARKE Dr Marilyn Clarke isn’t comfortable with terms such as ‘trailblazer’ when describing herself, but that’s exactly what she is. As the nation’s first Aboriginal Obstetrician, Dr Clarke is a leader in her field – a respected medical specialist and proud Worimi woman.

er new role as the Director of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Coffs Harbour Health Campus draws on her many years of experience and allows her to mentor the next generation of clinicians.

Hi Dr Clarke. Congratulations on your new role as head of Obstetrics at Coffs Harbour Health Campus! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and what made you decide to get into Obstetrics?

I credit my mother Grace Kinsella for encouraging me and my siblings into medicine.

Growing up in Port Stephens north of Newcastle with my twin sister and younger brother (Dr Marlene Kong and Associate Professor Kelvin Kong) we saw that our mother was a real trailblazer in her own right. She inspired us all.

Our mother was probably one of the main influencers as to why I am where I am today.

Her burning ambition was to do nursing, but she really struggled to get into nursing because of racism. She eventually got to where she wanted to be, going on to do midwifery, and then became one of the first 78 COFFS COAST

independent women’s health nurses in NSW. She really started that legacy of women’s health nurses we now see around the state.

And she did all this as a single mother!

My father (Malaysian-Chinese Dr Kong Cheok Seng) was also a doctor living in Malaysia so medicine was certainly in the genes!

It has been a long journey. I studied medicine straight from high school and was 33 when I eventually finished my specialty qualification.

Pregnancy and birth are big moments in a woman's life, what is it like for you being part of those special moments?

I never tire of helping little ones into the world. It’s an absolute joy. I enjoy every single delivery and helping to support women through that really special time in their life. The miracle is never lost on me.

What have been some of the most challenging and rewarding aspects of your job?

One of the hardest challenges for me is that no-one had been in my situation before, so there was no mentoring available.

It was a lonely journey because there were no other Aboriginal obstetricians and there were very few Aboriginal doctors and there still are too few Aboriginal doctors. You don’t have the people in front of you to see what can be done and what is achievable. I

It is so important to provide woman-centred care and that means we need to individualise that care and ensure we are always communicating and collaborating.

would like to see more mentors in place for our next generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander trainees.

The most rewarding part of my job has been empowering women to understand what their options are and informing them in a way they can understand. I want to continue to empower women to make decisions about their healthcare. This should be our everyday practice.

What might a typical day as an Obstetrician look like?

I don’t know that there is really a ‘typical day’ in Obstetrics and that is part of what makes it such an exciting career. There are so many facets to Obstetrics and Gynaecology – from assisting birthing women, to performing surgery or meeting women for consultations. Teaching and mentoring others is also an integral part of my role.

It is so important to provide womancentred care and that means we need to individualise that care and ensure we are always communicating and collaborating.

You are Australia’s first Aboriginal Obstetrician, what message do you

hope your success gets out into the community?

Growing up and experiencing disadvantage to a greater degree than most of my peers certainly provided me

with a different perspective. I am always conscious of this for others and work hard to remove barriers to their healthcare.

I hope other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders can use my journey as an example of what can be achieved when you have a passion for supporting and empowering women.

Moving into your new role, are there any ideas or changes you would hope to see happen in your field heading into the future?

I’m really excited because I have grand visions of how to continue to improve services for women in the community. I think we need to listen to women more and what their needs and wants are. That way we can shape the care for women around what their needs are and put them at the centre of everything we do.

Why did you want to be a Hygienist?

When I left school in Macksville I was intrigued to work in a dental surgery. I started out at a practice in Nambucca Heads and soon after joined Sharon Marinucci’s first practice in Urunga in 2004. I was enthralled by the dental industry and what we can do to help people, so decided go to university to study Dental Hygiene with my now husband. We left to the Central Coast to study for 3 years but I graduated and worked there for 7 more years, gaining experience. We decided to return home to the Coffs Coast together with our kids to enjoy more time with the rest of our family. Here I rejoined Sharon’s team and am now working with her new practice, Welcome Dental in Urunga, as I’ve always loved working with her.

Starting at a New School

W

hether in Kindergarten or year 7, or another other time, we have all started at a new school at some point in our lives. In my school, we have 202 new students starting in a variety of different year levels at the end of January. The purpose of this article is to share some advice to parents on how to settle your children in quickly and who to speak with about any concerns or questions. To make it easy to navigate I have created a top 10 list for parents to help get their children, new to school or not, ready for their next step.

PARENT TOP 10 Tip 1: Be positive - the transition to a new school can be stressful for parents and students. It is your responsibility to build excitement by talking about all the new opportunities for friendships and activities they’ll have. Visit the school for a tour with your children and walk around with the Head of School or the Principal.

Tip 2: Practice the new trip to school - it might sound silly but practising the walk, drive or bus trip beforehand will reduce the anxiety. Make sure the students know the bus number and the drop-off and pick-up zones as well as what to do if things change. Have a plan B. Tip 3: Arrange a chat with an older teen who’s been through it. If there’s a neighbour or cousin who’s started at a new school in the past, organise for them to hang out and hear what it was like. If not, talk with the school during the enrolment process about student mentoring, orientation programs and school buddy programs.

Tuition in groups or ‘teams’ has often been misunderstood.

Many people have thought that ‘individual’ is the best way for the tuition of their child.

W

hile it might be for some students, most benefit more from team tuition. At The Education Centre, we are careful to put like students together in the same team, making the most of the collaborative effect.

“Team tuition is highly underestimated,” says Liz Stevens, Proprietor of The Education Centre.

“Team tuition can make it more interesting for the student for the social impact as students are more likely to ‘want’ to be there.”

“Academically, team tuition is excellent as the students are carried along by each other as well as by the guidance of the tutor”, says Liz. “This gives the students a chance to mature as they learn how to discuss the subject and make positive contributions to the group learning. The focus is not just on one student ‘performing’; it is shared by the other members of the team reducing the pressure felt by individual students.”

The Education Centre promotes team tuition in many different subjects to enhance the students’ participation and to maximise their outcomes. Some examples are:

Working Maths: For years 5 to 8: A course of maths to give students a deeper understanding of the topics that the students are doing at school and how they will impact on a given career path. This class is enhanced by hands on activities.

Entertaining English: For years 5 to 8: This course brings English to life and is designed to have a more vocal and interesting content by the addition of acting and speaking.

Foundation for High School: For Years 5 to 8: A series of term assignments designed to enhance the students’ ability to prepare higher class assessment tasks; focussing on planning, research, editing, essay writing and speaking.

This course also covers basic maths reviews to help students stay up to date with this subject.

FAST FORWORD Liz is excited about the newest addition to The Education Centre programs: ‘Fast ForWord’. Fast ForWord123 is a unique 3 step, evidence-based method for increasing students’ capacity to

learn. It is a powerfully effective and scientifically validated method for improving learning outcomes where English is the language of instruction.

Fast ForWord123 builds cognitive skills essential for learning, and simultaneously improves the four components for learning-inthe-English-language: listening, reading, writing and speaking.

The program is usually completed at home over 5 days per week for the nominated period.

The course can be structured so that students can do some days at home and some in our Centre, so that students can enjoy the social part of learning as well. We will have trained tutors who will follow up on students’ progress regularly throughout the program.

Katrina BENNETT

Katrina Bennett is the mother of two daughters who have excelled at school and ended up working well beyond their year group level. We spoke to her about the ups and downs of what that can mean for gifted children and how she has worked collaboratively with their local schools to provide support and opportunities for these children and their families.

ey Katrina, how did you come to be living here on the Coffs Coast?

I was born and raised in Coffs Harbour but moved away for university and work

Your daughter is attending school locally and is working at school beyond her year group level. How old is she and what level of schoolwork is she currently doing?

Gifted children need to experience challenges in younger years to prepare them for harder work in high school and their life beyond schooling.

Our eldest is 11 and has just finished Year 6 at Mary Help of Christians (MHOC). She will be heading off to St John Paul College (SJPC) in 2022. Early in her schooling we discovered she required additional challenges in the classroom and so the school implemented some in-class differentiation techniques for her.

During Year 4 (2020) the school decided further challenges were required and so she started doing three of her subjects with the Year 6 class

every day. The school has been amazing and coordinated classes so those subjects ran at concurrent times. At the end of 2020 we had a discussion with MHOC Principal, Liz Watts, and the Leader of Gifted and High Potential Learning, Craig Warnes, and it was decided our eldest would grade-skip Year 5 and do Year 6 in 2021.

The school also coordinated with SJPC so that she could do English extension work with one of the SJPC English teachers. Based on everything

What are some of the ideas you have come up with?

My husband and I started the Facebook group ‘Coffs Coast Gifted Families Support’ because knowledge sharing is our most valuable resource. We also had discussions with Gifted NSW about creating a Coffs sub-branch, so our area is included in any state or national initiatives. As a result, Gifted NSW held a one-day workshop in Coffs in early 2020, shared information and specifically highlighted support options for Twice-Exceptional (2E) children – children identified as gifted, who have another exceptionality such as ASD, ADHD, dyslexia etc. We also try to attend courses and on-share external extension opportunities with both the school and people in the group.

Teachers are incredibly time-poor and trying to accommodate many different student profiles in their classrooms, so we have tried a collaborative approach. Going forward, I would love to establish a more formal mentoring program in which we can help connect local schools and all children with subject matter experts in various areas of interest (i.e. we already have an established connection with a London-based Egyptologist who has made himself available to answer students’ questions).

How can others find support in similar situations?

A formal gifted assessment can make conversations with schools easier. We went to Sydney for ours but there are local options and some schools provide on-site assessments. Start researching but keep an open mind. One of my favourite sayings is ‘You have met one gifted child, you have met one gifted child’, there is no one-size-fits-all scenario with gifted children and what works for one child may not work for another.

CYBER GURUS TAFE NSW has intensified efforts to upskill the next generation of cyber security professionals amid a critical skills shortage in the industry and a dramatic spike in cyber attacks during the pandemic.

ANN FLETCHER KANNELLA COFFS HARBOUR PHYSIE

Kannella Physical Culture Club is about to celebrate their 50th year running, and they are very proud of their history here as part of the Coffs Harbour community. Ann Fletcher is the head teacher at the club and has been involved almost since the beginning, teaching at Kannella for an impressive 43 years!

i Ann. You are the head teacher at Kannella Physie here in Coffs, can you tell us a bit about Physie and what you love about it?

Physie is just my favourite form of movement to music. Physie provides a full, well-rounded exercise routine for all ages, from 3 year olds, right through to mature ladies. We offer a syllabus especially tailored

for age and physical ability. While the 'heart' of physie is core strength and posture, our girls learn beautiful routines that exercise all muscles from top to toe. Combine this with carefully selected music and the end result is a graceful, controlled, fully inclusive exercise routine. We also include a modern dance in our syllabus. How could I not love it!

Everyone learns a new syllabus every year and we are always excited to see what that holds. I have been teaching for 43 years

and can't believe I never get bored with it but every year offers new challenges, new students and a whole lot of fun. It's quite a community too. We have a number of families, mothers, daughters and even granddaughters that all love their physie.

It seems to get in your system. Our club "Kannella" (which is an Aboriginal word meaning 'dance') prides itself on our caring, supportive approach. We love new members as well as our old ones.

The members enjoy designing their own leotards, adding lots of bling for a sparkly presentation... after all the work they put in, they deserve to look as pretty as they can.

What sort of skills are learnt through doing Physie?

Apart from the physical benefits mentioned above, it really aids concentration, focus and memory. Physie requires discipline and attention so that is what we encourage.

We hold competitions annually (for both teams and individuals). While, for me, the emphasis is not so much on results but rather the pride and sense of accomplishment that accompanies our performances.

What have been some of the highlights for you over your career at Kannella?

Highlights... "Open Senior Girls" is the most challenging section within our school.

The girls are aged between 19 and 25 and perform at a very high level. Kannella Coffs Harbour won the State Championship teams event in this section. It is the only time the trophy has left Sydney!!! To say we were elated is an understatement and the trophy came home with its own seat belt, in the back of the car.

When are classes on and how often does the club participate in competitions?

Our classes are held in the Banksia Room at Coffs Harbour Showground. It is a great little studio with a wall of mirrors and a sprung floor. We are very at home there and love it. We have junior classes on Saturday mornings and teenagers and older on Tuesday evenings.

Our competition season usually starts around August with friendly, local interclub challenges and continues through, to Zone and State levels, until the end of November. It is important to remember that competitions are not compulsory though.

I have learnt how to lead on the field by motivating my fellow players through encouragement, making sure we are all working as a team to get the job done and always calling out positive behaviours and attitudes. I have a strong feeling of protection too as I want all the younger players to feel like they belong and this is a family for them, as it is for me.

Lastly, what advice would you give to other young people?

Don’t ever limit yourself because of your race, culture, experience or past life. Be open minded to try more and be more. You can change your life path and make your dreams come true.

i Nick. Can you introduce yourself to our readers?

I’m Nick Fairbanks, I’m 16 years old. I’m just finishing year 10 at Bellingen High School. I love playing the violin, and hope to make it my career. I’ve been studying the violin for 7 years, under the tuition of some of Bellingen’s finest musicians. From an early age I have always had a deep fascination with music so, lucky for me, growing up in the Bellingen Shire (which has such a strong creative and musical community) has strengthened my already existing passion.

Over the last 3 years, I have spent many, many hours in the practice room (the average is probably 4-5 hours, but I have been known 98 COFFS COAST

to spend up to 7 or even 8 hours practicing), working hard to bring my standard of playing to the level required to further my studies. I have done both Suzuki and AMEB Exams, and I’ll take my final exam early next year, the “Licentiate in Music” – then I am licensed to teach violin. I’m about to venture away from home to Sydney, so that I can continue to learn as much as I can in a bigger place, which will have more students and opportunities to challenge and inspire me.

Can you tell us about your music journey so far? Where did you first start lessons and what groups have you been a part of?

I began violin lessons with Elizabeth Scott at Chrysalis Steiner School. Everyone starts playing violin in class 3 at Chrysalis as part of

She introduced me to “The Hundred Day Challenge”, this is a challenge to practise every day for $1.00 a day. At first I was keen to earn an easy $100 to be honest, but actually, I forgot about the money as I realised what regular practice could do! Practising daily meant that I started to play music that sounded pretty good! Miss Scott was a really great first teacher, she made lessons fun and was very inspiring, always encouraging me to keep practising my pieces.

My next teacher was the amazing Jacqueline Gill who kept on inspiring me and taught me lots about performance. Jacquie played in a local group called “Honey and Knives” so she was a great performer herself!

Jacquie was really patient and trusting, and she always kept me interested, working on pieces that were fun but challenging.

During this time I started to play with the Bellingen Youth Orchestra, directed by Anne Phelan. This was SO great! I had been hanging to play in an orchestra and finally I was there. I also played in a High School String Group before school. Playing with all these high school musicians was really exciting for me as a year 6 kid! Annie Phelan

became a mentor for me. I think she knew what I hoped to do with my violin, and I am so happy I have had her support. She has been the most amazing teacher. Bellingen High School is so lucky to have her. She leads the BYO with such enthusiasm and dedication, we all love Annie leading us. We have such a great time, we have even played several combined schools concerts at The Sydney Opera House.

At the end of year 7, I began lessons with Amber Davis. Amber had recently moved to the area from Sydney. Amber played violin with The Sydney Symphony Orchestra for 25 years, so starting lessons with her was exactly what I was dreaming of! After I finish my HSC, I would like to do a Bachelor of Music in Sydney at the Conservatorium or maybe in another State.

Beyond that I would love to continue my studies overseas, travelling the world, studying what I love and performing in amazing places. Sharing my passion for music with others all over the world will be such an incredible dream to follow. Who knows where I’ll land? I know it’s one step at a time, but I almost can’t wait!

ongratulations for winning the “Retailer of the year” at the Coffs Coast Business Awards. How does it feel? In a word, amazing.

We feel honoured to be recognised by the local community for the hard work we’ve put in to building up our Bottleshop, both in the range of products available and staff knowledge to assist our customers. We are also extremely grateful to the local community for their support. Our business wouldn’t be the same without them, especially with the challenging time we’ve all had over the last couple of years.

What makes you an award winning business? We work hard to create a supportive, empowering environment that allows staff flexibility and autonomy in their positions. This autonomy has been instrumental in the success of growing our sales in the bottle shop by encouraging staff to bring us new

products, and create new promotions when they find something they think would fit our clientele.

Working with local and national brands we have created an ever-changing array of products to suit all tastes. We currently stock a range of between 25-35 Australian craft beers, taking advantage of seasonal variations. This has led to a constantly rotating stock base that follows craft beer trends throughout the year.

How has the venue evolved over the years? When we did renovations in late 2019 we built a brand new Bottle Shop to meet our customers’ requests for more

variety in their selections. Our square footage increased dramatically and our range expanded allowing us to meet the demand of our customers, who were going to Coffs Harbour in search of a variety. We have put a focus on Australian products, in particular those from the Mid North Coast such as Critters Distillery, Sanctus Brewery and King Tide Brewing.

What plans do you have for the future?

To keep striving for excellence in our customer service. To continue growing our range to meet our customers’ needs. To support local and national Australian businesses and our local community.

ommunity Care Options (CCO) was very proud to be the winner of the Excellence in Workplace Inclusion Award for 2021. A huge thank you to the wonderful team at CCO – each and every one of you. This is recognition for your efforts in living our values every day – we support people to live and participate in their community, and it is an honour to do so.

Workplace inclusion is about being a business that facilitates the needs of all of its employees and customers. This can be a tough call. With a very diverse client group, covering 3 LGAs, we require a very diverse staffing base. We also need to be able to communicate with them effectively, with largely a workforce that is dispersed, working alone in client homes.

To be inclusive you need to have some key strategies in place – a sound values framework, a code of conduct and ethics, clear policies

and procedures for both client care and human resource management, and effective support systems. CCO undertakes skills and interests audits of our staff as a means of getting to know them better as people, but also to better match these skills and interests with client skills and interests.

We employ people based on our values framework. This has allowed us to increase the diversity of our workforce. The aged and disability sectors are growing and require a diverse workforce to support this growth. I would urge anyone not currently working, to think about whether they could work in this sector. It has tremendous benefits for personal growth, and to give something back to the community is very

When I wrote the award submission, we had only been trading for 8 months. The biggest achievement has been our increase in referrals through word-of-mouth. Currently over 60% of our referrals come from word of mouth. When people are trusting us with their family and friends it tells us that we are providing a good service – I am most proud of that.

We are set in an old house, which is decorated with local artworks,

antiques and set in a lovely garden – it feels like home.

Our team offer a wide range of services; including general dentists, dental therapists and dental hygienists and visiting specialists to assist in catering for our patients needs.

I

n Australia, we are lucky that government subsidies can help with the costs, but you will have to jump through hoops to be approved. And you may have long waiting times before the government money becomes available (particularly home care).

This article takes a quick look at the three steps for approval.

Step 1 – Register with MyAgedCare You first need to register with MyAgedCare.

You can lodge an application online at myagedcare.gov.au or you can call on 1800 200422. MyAgedCare complete a quick eligibility check by asking basic questions about your health and how you are coping.

It is a good idea to have a family member (or friend) with you to help with the answers.

You can also nominate this person to be the MyAgedCare contact point for the rest of the process.

Step 2 – Referral to ACAT If you pass this first assessment,

MyAgedCare pass on your contact details and the information collected to an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT).

Assessors prefer to do the assessment in your home so they can see what the home environment is like and how well you are coping. This can help with the discussion around whether home care or residential care might be more appropriate.

If the ACAT teams are busy, you may find several weeks delay between your first contact with MyAgedCare and your assessment appointment.

Step 3 – Assessment results After the assessment, you will receive a letter in the mail detailing the results. If approved, it will indicate approval for a Home Care Package – at Level 1, 2, 3 or 4 – and/ or respite residential care and/or permanent residential care.

You can be approved for more than one care option, which may give you flexibility to adapt as circumstances change.

Mobile phone technology meant that we became more mobile and contactable, and the technology improved rapidly. Within a decade we had gone from STD phone calls on a Saturday night to 10 years ago, free FaceTime and video working for a calling.

10 years ago, working for a big national or international company meant relocating to a large city where these companies

are often headquartered. It could have also meant a lot of travel and time spent away from family members, friends, and community.

Modern workplaces, due substantially to the COVID pandemic, have had to allow employees to work from home. And we’ve seen people take advantage of that in huge numbers.

If you can work from home, and home can be anywhere, we will start to see more and more people decide to move to Regional NSW, or to hire people from Regional NSW for senior roles.

Technology has opened the door to opportunities for young people to further their careers while living in the best address in the world instead of a cramped Sydney apartment.

This will change the face of our local economy as well as our local demographics.

Giving people more options was always the promise of technology – and now we’re seeing it come to fruition.

Every block is different, we like to incorporate design excellence which creates energy efficient homes and therefore we concentrate on light, access, and cross-flow ventilation, to name a few.”

“We love this ability we have to sit with our clients and design and create their dream home,” explains Rob. “From the outset clients know exactly what they are getting and it is exciting to go from these initial ideas, to seeing the build progress, until we hand over of a beautifully crafted home.”

“Every site has its challenges, but you just have to use smart design to get around them,” explains Todd. “There are numerous points to consider when building on sloping sites, with access to the site, yard space and how you’ll use the land all coming into play.”

I thought this month I may go off on a little different tangent to start the new year.

W

hat do horror movies and real estate have in common I hear you ask? Easy, in a lot of horror movies the home is central to the plot. I recently read an article explaining this reasoning, please read on...

1. Nosferatu (1922) There’s nothing like making the property sale of your life, only to find out that your dream client is a member of the blood-sucking undead. This movie is notable because it was an unauthorised adaptation of the book “Dracula” by Bram Stoker. Recently, improved copies of the original movie have been made accessible to the public. This film introduced the concept of vampires being severely harmed and/or destroyed by sunlight.

2. The Amityville Horror (1979) Perhaps the most extreme case of buyer’s remorse in a film to date, “The Amityville Horror” is based on Jay Anson’s novel of the same name. A family purchases a big house with a big lot in a nice neighborhood for a low, low price... you know that there has to be something wrong with the picture. And there is. A lot wrong. Fortunately for the viewer, the supernatural events claimed to be true in the book and the movie have not been reported by the family presently living in the house. That folks we call ‘non disclosure of material fact’.

3. Poltergeist (1982) The Australian Dream: the kids, the car, the 126 COFFS COAST

house... wait... The house has a few problems.

Faulty wiring – the living room television turns on by itself. Not level – the coffee urn keeps moving. Weed problems – a tree outside trying to grab the kids and hurl them into a parallel dimension. And having the house implode on you is always another indication that things aren’t entirely sound. You may want to pass on trying to sell this one.

4. The Lost Boys (1987) A movie that illustrates what’s important about the phrase, “location, location, location”. When you’re looking for a place to raise your two teenagers, perhaps “the murder capital of the world” shouldn’t be your first consideration. That and all those damn vampires.

5. The Haunting (1963) This is the 1963 version and not the unwieldy 1999 remake. Might keep this one in mind if you decide to check out a house with a dark past. A team of paranormal investigators find that an old mansion contains more sinister forces than mould and termites and loss of equity.

6. The Tenant (1976) Roman Polanski plays a man who becomes afraid that his landlord and neighbours are trying to mould him into the previous tenant so that he will commit suicide too. This film isn’t a sparkling example of landlord-tenant relations, but it does bring in a good creep factor to rental property investments.

7. The Uninvited (1944) And no, it’s not about the relatives coming

to visit, it’s another case of a well-appointed house being purchased at a suspiciously low price. Of course, the new owner finds that there are some supernatural squatters who make life... difficult. As in, make it difficult to stay alive. As with many other older films, watch this one instead of its remakes.

8. Psycho (1960) Traumatising shower lovers for nearly 50 years, Psycho features the brooding Bates house that overlooks the Bates Motel. It would be a better investment if its owner wasn’t channelling his murderous mother, but you can’t expect everything.

9. Arachnaphobia (1990) A doctor moves his family away from the big, bad city to end up fighting big, bad spiders.

It’s what you get when you find a cheap house in a safe neighborhood: something always comes along to threaten your life. Classic tale for those who are unconvinced of the need for a pest inspection before buying – big South American killer spiders could get YOU. 10. Hot Fuzz (2007) Not a horror movie per se, but still an exceptionally violent film illustrating that sleepy, well-to-do, neighbourly towns with picturesque heritage houses ALWAYS have something wrong with them, like secret cults murdering wayward villagers.

I suppose although it is a bit of a laugh, it does show us the importance of doing your due diligence when purchasing a home.

In any case, hope you all have a wonderful 2022 and it brings you all you wish.
