anuary is peak season at the Hoey Moey and this year delivers one of the biggest summer lineups on the offs oast ith live music five nights a week and major touring acts coming through, the Hoey remains a key stop for locals and visitors looking to experience summer entertainment.

The venue was recently named Coffs Coast Business of the Year and also won awards for os itality ourism and vents which confirms its position as a leading live entertainment venue in the region.

The Hoey will host a full calendar of live events throughout January, including Thirsty Merc,

Through January we also have two amazing live reptile displays with Steve from Reptile World, musical bingo, kids face painting and magnet making workshop. We have weekly bingo on Mondays and trivia on Wednesday nights.

You’ve got a great reputation for food, any summer menu highlights or new dishes/drinks people should try this month? We are kicking off our new summer menu at the end of December with a refreshed cocktail

menu too. Our daily bistro specials change often and can sell out quickly due to popularity – so it's best to keep an eye on our specials board!

How does the venue adapt to holiday crowds and warm weather?

Any unique January experiences that set you apart? We have a huge outdoor area with large grassed areas for children to play, a new playground and new outdoor under cover seating area that has been finished ust in time for the busy holiday season. As well as plenty of indoor seating and areas for our guests.

For group catch-ups, birthdays, or summer gatherings, what do you offer in terms of bookings, functions, or spaces? We offer 3 different indoor dining areas, as well as covered outdoor seating and grassed outdoor seating with plenty of umbrella coverage. We have more space than your average pub with plenty of room for the kids to run around and pets are also welcome.

A er the huge success of the Awake Is The New Sleep 20th Anniversary Tour, Ben Lee is hitting the road once again, this time for a 40-date regional tour that brings him back to the grassroots spirit he loves most about performing. Ahead of his Bellingen Memorial Hall show on Wednesday 7th January, Ben chats with us about the freedom of touring without a plan, the magic of regional audiences, and why making music still feels as exciting as ever.

here s no logic mean there are a handful of songs that I play every night - the “hits” so to speak, but then there is a lot of room to play and evolve and explore because I have such a big catalogue built over 3 and a bit decades After so many years of touring, has your relationship with life on the road changed?

ou’re bringing the Starlights Tour to Coffs Harbour this summer, what can fans expect from this show compared to past tours?

having been part of their lives is just such a great shot to the heart. You often don’t see it as people are consuming music in their homes and personal lives so when we play, we get to see that connection in real time and it doesn’t get old…it’s getting more and more powerful.

We are just going all in on a big show. It’s a huge setlist and the set has some great dynamics and unique moments and we fully appreciate that a lot of the audience might not have seen us for a very long time so we want to bring something that really delivers. We haven’t done a run where there are multiple shows a week for a very long time so we are looking forward to having the live machine really dialled and when that happens the shows are pretty electric. You can expect to see some very energised birds on stage.

How does the energy of regional audiences compare to capital city crowds, and what do you most look forward to about playing the Mid North Coast?

Your music has evolved so much over the years. How do you strike the balance between celebrating the classics and showcasing the newer material on tour?

Good question as that is one thing we still struggle with after all these years and to be honest that’s always the challenge with putting a set together. We are always wanting to put new or older deep cuts in to change this up but it’s not always well received. There is always going to be a hardcore smaller group of folks who want those songs but it can often go over the heads of the casual fans who just want the known quantities. I think it really depends on the type of show and venues too.

Sometimes you think you’ve got it right putting in some more challenging works but then on the night the vibe is just a bit of a party so we are always ready to pivot and play to that energy.

After so many years of touring together, what excites you most about stepping on stage as Birds Of Tokyo in 2026?

It just becomes a deeper appreciation of what a privilege it is to still be doing this after so many years. We take nothing for granted anymore. Watching how deeply some of this music resonates with people as

their own parents is a real stoke. Bands like Birds can only exist for as long as we have, which is about 23 years now, because of the support of this audience. Everything we have achieved we owe to these people and thank them dearly for this.

Looking back on your journey so far, what moments still stand out as career highlights?

itchell, take us back to the beginning. What rst ins ired you to ursue a career in ood and how did that ath eventually ue era?

I started cooking when I was 16 in Port Stephens, so coming back to the east coast feels a bit like a homecoming. I spent a big part of my career in New Zealand and London and those years were paramount in shaping how I cook and who I am. After so much time away, it felt like the right moment to build something personal. With Bar Que Sera, and my partnership with Jason and Duane, I’ve had the chance to channel my experience into a beautiful coastal restaurant. ar ue era has built a strong re utation or elevated coastal dining ow would you describe your ersonal ood hiloso hy and the style you bring to the menu?

Simply put: I cook the food I like to eat.

berries, tomatoes, stone fruit. Everything feels lighter, brighter, and more expressive. It’s a great time to cook, and a great time to dine.

Great food comes from a great team. Tell us about your kitchen crew.

We’re unique in that it’s just myself and one other chef, Nick who I’ve worked with before.

I actually pulled him straight out of high school, and he did his apprenticeship under me. In a small team, trust and understanding are everything. When we reopened Bar Que Sera, I needed someone with passion, curiosity, and enthusiasm equal to my own.

Nick fits that erfectly e communicate intuitively, which is essential when you’re working in such an intimate space.

As Head Chef, how do you balance creativity with consistency, delivering dishes that evolve while still meeting guest expectations?

Creativity drives you forward, but consistency builds trust. For me, the two go hand in hand: creativity isn’t about constantly reinventing the wheel it s about refining and elevating what we do. Sometimes the most meaningful change is a small tweak, a better oil, a new herb, a small shift in acidity. Those

adjustments keep the menu alive without losing the essence of the dish, and because we print our menus in-house, we can make those changes as soon as inspiration strikes.

Since becoming Head Chef, what has been one of your proudest moments?

Our reopening, without a doubt. Working with Jason and Duane on a project that genuinely re ects our shared vision for dining and hospitality has been incredibly rewarding.

Seeing the dining room full and buzzing, watching guests connect with the food, the wine, and the atmosphere, that’s the moment you realise all the long days were worth it.

The Coffs Coast dining scene is evolving quickly. How do you stay inspired and keep the menu fresh for returning guests?

It truly is evolving, and we’re proud to be a part of that. Inspiration comes from everywhere, the produce, other chefs, travel, even just walking through the market, but staying inspired is really about staying curious.

Because our menu changes frequently, often weekly, guests always have something new to look forward to. And the wine list evolves alongside it, which keeps things exciting for both the kitchen and the dining room.

Running a regional restaurant comes with

unique opportunities and challenges.

What do you enjoy most about cooking on the Coffs Coast?

There’s a genuine sense of community here.

People care about food, and they care about the people making it. That connection motivates us, and the access to beautiful produce, from seafood to vegetables to fruit, is an absolute gift. For a chef, that’s heaven.

Looking ahead, what can diners expect from you and Bar Que Sera in 2026?

We’re always brainstorming, about food, wine, how we deliver hospitality. We want Bar Que Sera to continue evolving, and we want to keep contributing to the local dining culture ou ll definitely see more of our monthly wine events, and we have a few ideas simmering away that we’re excited to bring to life. or rst time visitors what s the one dish they absolutely must try?

I honestly can’t choose just one. For newcomers, the “feed me” option is the best introduction, a surprise menu, perfect for sharing. It allows us to showcase the full spectrum of what we do. Sit back, relax, and let the dishes arrive.

Its charm lies in its chameleon nature. Rosé can be made from almost any red grape, each variety offering its own accent. Provence still holds court with its pale, whisper-delicate styles built from Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah, wines that feel like a breeze off the Côte d’Azur: crisp, mineral and quietly assured. Head west and the rosados of Navarra and Rioja glow deeper in colour, offering juicier red-berry tones. osh, King Tide Brewing has become known for brewing beers with local businesses and creatives.

What drives your interest in collaboration?

Collaboration allows us to build connection with the people and the businesses around us. Every time we start a new collab project, we learn, grow and make new friends.

Our team brings a wealth of experience to brewing beers, but there are so many rich and diverse ideas that emerge when we work with people outside of the brewing world. This keeps us from getting stuck in our own rhythm and helps us stay part of the broader community.

You have done a collab beer with Hope Road Espresso for three years running.

What has made that collaboration last?

The thing I am most proud of is that we raised enough money from the roceeds of that beer for ink ilks rust to buy a new defibrillator for Defib ero which is now located at the oambee ervo In addition to collab beers, you have also been doing custom beer cans for locals. Tell us about that?

We saw an opportunity to get customised beer cans into the hands of locals for corporate gifts or special occasions. We

Skotty; Not expected it, but we did speak openly that when the window of opportunity presented itself, we’d kick it wide open; say yes to everything once and promise that everything we did say yes to was done well.

The band formed after you guys reconnected back in your now hometown of Woolgoolga, what made you go “we should start something” at this time?

Greg; hen we first started laying together again it was supposed to be just a casual jam for old times sake while our kids had a play-date, but it didn’t take long for that old chemistry to take over. Skotty’s always been a 110% guy, so, once it started getting legs he’d already run halfway down the road! ow would you describe oss tom in your own words?

Skotty; the bite size catch-phrase we’ve labelled our own sound is “ Swamp Stomp Garage Rock”; but I think some of the descriptives we’ve been called this year are pretty funny if not comically accurate; “Ash Grunwald on Acid..” “.. Grunge band of the blues..” “the epitome of

fuzz-drenched resonator rock” and my personal favourite “ two metal-heads playing blues and roots”…

The live shows are a huge part of your reputation; chaotic, funny, loud and full of energy. What do you hope people take away rom a oss tom gig?

Greg; We genuinely want people to have as much fun as we are having up there and give them something they’re going away to talk about.

Skotty; Yeah, I think Fun is the objective here. As either participants or as spectators, I hope people take away the feeling of having had fun. I don’t

ever want a Boss show to be boring for the people in the room.

We wrote, recorded, mixed, and produced the record, then concepted and created the promotional artworks that adorn it. It’s all us. As artists, that’s bucket-list stuff.

You’ve known each other for more than 30 years, how does that long friendship translate on stage and in the studio?

Greg; I think the chemistry within Boss is a big part of its appeal. We’re genuine and people can relate to that. The two blokes joking with each other between songs is no act, that’s us 365 days a year doing what we’ve always naturally done.

res onse meant or your con dence as artists?

Skotty; Yes, I agree with that. It’s been a year I'll never forget that’s for sure. From playing the Big Banana to interstate travels and everything between; just mindblowing.

Greg; It’s a nod in our general direction that what we’re doing is a great thing. Musically speaking, we’re a bit of a black sheep; not really this, and not really that either. There’s no obvious genre we fit into and with that comes a little uncertainty as to how we’ll be received.

Your debut record DUST KICKER has been central to this whirlwind year, what does that album represent for you at this point in your life?

Skotty; Well I think Dust Kicker has been the “Carrot and the Stick” in moving us forward.

We set the goal to have an extended release out in our first year and that s been a huge motivator in so far as grown family men forging the personal time to pursue our own creative potential.

From open mic nights to the main stage at the Airlie Beach Music Festival in just eight months is an incredible leap, what was that like for you personally?

Greg; t s significant for us in that this is the first project where we backed ourselves and created 100% of the product! We wrote, recorded, mixed, and produced the record, then concepted and created the promotional artworks that adorn it. It’s all us. As artists, that’s bucket-list stuff.

Viewed through those lens’s, receiving the kind of radio support we’ve been receiving is a very welcomed affirmation that we re doing something right Sitting on the cusp of national attention, what does the next 12 months look like for Boss Stomp and what’s your biggest goal as artists right now?

Greg; Well, there’s a follow up release coming out in the first half of the year with live appearances booked well into 2026.

Skotty; Yep, bigger supports on offer, mix bill invites and we’ve also been approached by a number of festivals after our Airlie appearances, so fingers crossed that all lays out well and the momentum keeps rolling.
