Merry Christmas

Pat Conaghan Federal Member for Cowper This year has been tough, arguably one of the toughest since the last time our nation experienced a major health pandemic in 1919. And for our region, it has been even harder because of the preceding bushfires and drought. C

While there remains a monumental task ahead to recover, we are making progress with state borders reopening and signs this holiday season will be great for our tourism industry.

It's been a tough year and you have helped us through. Let’s raise a glass this Christmas to all of our frontline workers, first responders, amazing volunteers and businesses.

Indeed we are in a fortunate position compared to many other countries around the world. Our health experts are suggesting a COVID-19 vaccine, if safe and effective, should be available for roll out early next year. This year the true Australian spirit has shone through. We have been there for each other and made sacrifices for the greater good of the nation and I thank you all. On behalf of my wife Ilona and our boys, I wish you a safe, happy and peaceful Christmas.

H

ey Robert, you’re bringing basketball coaching to the next level here on the Coffs Coast. Where did your basketball career begin? I was born and raised in Coffs Harbour and was introduced to basketball for the first time in Grade 4. My family and I had just started at Bishop Druitt College and I was invited to play basketball for the school, and I have been hooked ever since. I played for Coffs Harbour Basketball as a representative player all through my juniors until I received a basketball scholarship to attend The Scots College in Sydney in Grade 10. This then exposed me to highly skilled coaches at both the GPS level and also at a metro representative level. From this came the offer of a College scholarship in Canada. Being exposed to You grew up on the a higher level of Coffs Coast but had to basketball increases move away to pursue each player’s skill sets, a professional career however the costs grandstands on the in Basketball. All I wanted to be come at a cost to Being able to travel, was a player on the Coffs families. visit new places, witness State League team, so how basketball operates to be able to accomplish in different parts of the that, and be on the team that won the first world, and seeing what the game meant to Men’s State title for the association was a different communities was a great experience. special moment I will never forget. Playing against Jaylen Brown from the Boston You have founded North Coast Basketball Celtics in 2015 when his college team was touring Australia was another highlight. I am a here on the Coffs Coast. What made you want to start NCB and come back to the hardcore Boston Celtics fan and being able to Coffs Coast? match up against an NBA player was a surreal Coffs is my hometown and there really moment I’ll always remember. Also being able isn’t any other place like it. I met my partner to represent Australia at FIBA 3X3 in China Monica in Adelaide when playing there and last year was a humbling experience, but my she fell in love with Coffs when she first visited favorite highlight moment would have to be the area. Our future plans were always to winning the NSW State League Championship return to Coffs with an aim to support and with Coffs Harbour Basketball in 2012. When I first started playing basketball, going grow basketball in the region. CoronaVirus cancelled the NBL1 season, so I looked for the down to the stadium on a Saturday night to positives in this and took the opportunity to watch the Coffs Harbour Men’s State League return to Coffs Harbour. I feel very blessed and team play was the only thing I wanted to fortunate to be able to commit to North Coast do. My mum would take me to every game, Basketball full-time. I knew every player on the team, and the stadium was so full they had to set up portable I have worked in multiple not-for-profit

basketball associations throughout Australia for the last 12 years and have witnessed the inner workings of some of Australia’s largest and most successful associations. Developing the game and introducing the sport to young players in the greater North Coast region is something I am very passionate about. I saw first hand the sporting opportunities that kids in the metropolitan areas were exposed to and wanted to be able to bring this advantage to kids in the regional/country areas. Talented teams and players in our area have to travel to Sydney and beyond to be exposed to strong and consistent quality basketball. Being exposed to a higher level of basketball increases each player’s skill sets, however the costs associated with travel, accommodation and time commitments come at a cost to families. I have always believed that if we can develop a regional player program to a high level we can have this advantage ‘at home’ and continue to progress and grow the game across the North Coast footprint. For this to occur though, all neighboring basketball associations must work together to build a strong and cohesive basketball base. >>> COFFS COAST

a professional basketball player. The impact that small gesture had on my life was huge. It gave me motivation, direction, and a sense of purpose and I still have the shoes on display in my house today. I want to be like Rillie and help inspire young athletes to aim high and chase their dreams, I am very aware how small gestures can have a large impact on someone who looks up to you. I hope to inspire every kid I coach to try that little bit harder and apply themselves to whatever basketball or nonbasketball goals they set. Where do you see NCB heading into the future? The next step is to combine the best players from each association on the North Coast and have them train as a group and help them learn how to understand and play within advanced structure. Once the pandemic restrictions ease, these players will represent North Coast Basketball at some of the largest tournaments in Australia and

help create exposure to assist in progression to higher levels of basketball, both in Australia and in the US College system. My long-term goal is to have a qualified coach in each major town along the coast to deliver consistent programs under the North Coast banner. I can only be in one place at a time and believe it is important for kids to all access to a full-time coach regardless of their location. Once this is hopefully achieved, I would like to develop a NCB training venue complete with half courts and a weights room for players to frequently access training and workouts. I would like to provide a space for all basketballers to come and hangout and work on their craft in an encouraging and supportive environment. Aside from the physical skills, what else would you hope they get out of participating in the camps? My greatest strength as an educator is my communication skills and being able to transfer information in an effective manner. I believe I can help players learn by sharing

the mistakes I made as a player and the lessons I learnt along the way that allowed me to experience personal success in the sport. Helping players I coach to understand the mental side of the game is a key focus area. Once I progressed to the next level, I learnt how structured the game was, and that I couldn’t physically dominate a game against faster and stronger players. I developed an understanding that every player on the team has their own role to play in order for the team to be successful. I was always the strongest player in my region, but I struggled when playing in a teams with equal or stronger talents. Overcoming the mental mindset of going from a big fish in a little pond to a little fish in a big pond was a challenge – but necessary in order to progress. Once I accepted my role, I started to perform better on the court and my role gradually grew bigger and I was asked to do more for the team. It’s important for players to understand if they do not like the role they have been given or if they disagree with the limited minutes they are receiving, what are they willing and able to do to change that? So much blame is placed on the coach, but

all the coach is trying to do is effectively manage the team and challenge the players to improve. I think everyone needs to remember that around only 1% of the basketball population in Australia will play at an elite level, however the life lessons of participating in sport and a game you love are for life, including: the lessons learnt in both winning and losing; the generosity and kindness of volunteers; and the greatness that can be gained from being in a team and respecting coaches, community leaders and officials. My coaching style is holistic – teaching fundamental and high-level basketball skills whilst at the same time mentoring, guiding and supporting all players to play and be their personal best. It is important to me to help prepare the younger person to transition into the next stages of life during and after basketball – through goal setting, being accountable, strong teamwork, time management and how to remain mentally resilient. I am passionate about growing basketball as a community sport whilst at the same time providing opportunities and pathways for individual success. Tulli Stevens, Jimmy Waggs and Matt Day are the masterminds behind Skate and Create the place where art and skateboarding combine. We sat down with the crew to discuss the vision of Skate and Create to see what it's all about.

H

ey guys, Mullaway Creative Co and Lionheart Skateboard Academy are joining forces and are bringing “Skate and Create” to the Coffs Coast. Tell us your vision behind Skate and Create and how it’s come to fruition? Hey Focus, thanks for having us!! Skate and Create Woolgoolga came about one afternoon when Matty Day from Lionheart skateboard academy picked up his two boys from our Mullaway Creative Co after school art sessions. He asked “what do you guys think about joining forces with a Skate and Create facility?” Tulli and Jimmy jumped straight in with an enthusiastic yes and the wheels began turning. So began the brainstorming and location stalking until we found a location allowing us to begin our adventure. We were fortunate to find 20 COFFS COAST

you could imagine. At Skate and Create Woolgoolga we teach beginners the fundamentals and advanced riders how to keep pushing their limits. We have lessons and sessions for all skill levels and we recommend booking ahead as it’s already very busy. Why do you think skateboarding and art blend so well? Skateboarding is art. It is such a creative sport. From its roots in surf culture – taking roller skates and bolting them to a plank of wood to emulate surfing on the sidewalk,

discovering empty pools to skate in a Californian drought, the construction of various backyard ramps all the way through to the modern day skate park designs and boundary pushing mega ramps – everything about skateboarding is creative. Then there’s the art on decks, we encourage readers to dive deep into skate art, there is a very rich history there. From tic tacking to nollie heelflips, it all comes about through creative minds and that’s just the tricks, then add in everyone’s individual style and the culture that has evolved, it's endless. You have taken almost a gym style membership approach for people wanting to join, how does this work? The art space will be all that Mullaway Creative Co has previously offered plus more. Creative sessions, adult workshops, skate deck and ukulele painting and art therapy for NDIS. We hope the whole family will get involved, mum and son creating a masterpiece on the lounge or easel, daughter showing dad how to rock n roll on the ramp, or vice versa. Girls get your roller skates out! Tulli has been learning to roller skate with a few local ladies having a go too. Our ramp is far nicer to fall on than concrete, so great for the girls to have a go. What kind of art will you be teaching? Predominantly skills in the use of paint pens although we will expand into other mediums and techniques. We are open to the ideas of the community. Let us know what you want to do and we will do our best to accommodate it. Jimmy has been enjoying wood burning lately. Tulli has experience with a number of techniques and focuses on art as therapy, she has completed her advanced diploma of visual arts and is ready to share her knowledge. Lino cutting is fun, a new space allows us to spread our wings creatively. Do members need any skateboard experience or artistic skills to join? No experience is required. Matty Day of Lionheart Skateboard Academy is a very experienced skater and qualified skateboard coach, with over 30 years’ experience riding and 10 years’ coaching. Jimmy has 30 years riding experience and is in training to become a qualified skateboard coach. We welcome first timers, beginners, intermediate to shredders. Our hybrid skateboard ramp has 1.5ft,

2ft, 3ft, 4ft and 5ft transitions, allowing beginners to learn fundamentals on the micro and mini ramps and work their way up to the 5ft extensions. The ramp has some interchangeable sections, like a hump, a spine and more options to come. You have entered a new space to shred out of, how's everything been coming along? Well we have had help from the local tradies and spent late nights building super smooth, multi-levelled, fun but challenging skate ramps. We are currently focusing on setting up a comfortable creative space with plants, couches and maybe even crystals. The design, layout and construction process has been fun. We want a funky, inspirational space for the community to enjoy. How much work goes into creating an indoor skate park? A lot of hard yet rewarding work. Working on your passion is fun, there have been a lot of laughs, music education, tools education, sore backs and a very sore toe. “Shed of dreams – if you build it they will come.” We have utilised half of the space for stage one and once up and running smoothly we will at some stage embark on the construction of stage two, in total there will be 288 square metres of fun. Where do we find out more? Find out more on our social media accounts. Hockey Dad have been living the dream the last few years, TOURING AND TRAVELLING THE WORLD OVER. NOW, WITH THEIR THIRD STUDIO ALBUM BRAIN CANDY, the boys are back, fully inspired and ready to play live for their fans once again.

H

ey Guys. You’re heading up the Coast this month, stopping by Port for our Back In The Sun event which has everyone super excited. What's been happening lately and how’s prep going? We’ve just been keeping busy at home rehearsing and writing new tunes! Super excited to come up and play in Port Mac again. We are so stoked with any opportunity to play live. You’re no strangers to a studio album with Brain Candy being your third. How did you find the writing and creative process this time around and did you focus on changing things up a little? This record we had a little more time in the writing and recording process. We hunkered down in a little house in Bathurst for a few weeks to go through all the songs we had written. Then spent three weeks in the studio in Seattle recording the album. It gave us a chance to experiment with different sounds and types of songs for Brain Candy! You can't seem to put a foot wrong when 24 COFFS COAST

it comes to music. How's the past couple of years been for you guys professionally? It’s been kind of a dream ride. We got to play music and travel the world with awesome people for a job. Doesn’t get much better really. Who's been your main influence and inspiration over your music career? It’s hard to single out anyone in particular. When we were young we started playing with bands like Bad//Dreems and DZ Deathrays. Those fellas really took us under their wing and inspired us to really tackle the touring and band life! Unfortunately 2020 saw you cancelling overseas tours and changing dates for the Australian tour. You had to get creative both with your album release and to keep entertained. What's your experience been like during this time and what positives will you take away? It’s been a very weird experience trying to release an album during this year. We definitely had to get creative when it came to ways we could promote the album and play the songs live. We hosted a live stream of a set on release

night where we played the whole album from start to finish. It felt great to at least be able to celebrate the release with some kind of gig for our fans. We also hosted some drive-in gigs at the end of October which gave us the chance to play to fans in person again. It was also such a crazy new experience for everybody involved. Those gigs were probably our highlight of 2020. You've now released tour dates for the 2021 Brain Candy Tour, which has already sold out in Sydney and Melbourne. It must feel good getting back into it and knowing the fans are out supporting you. Yeah we’re so thankful for everybody who has been patient and stuck with us throughout this year. So keen to get back around Oz next year and play to everybody again! Thanks guys. T H E

Coffs Harbour is taking a stand and showing that "Coffs Harbour says No to Domestic Violence" through a series of signage on banners and buses around town. The campaign is designed to raise awareness and show that it is everyone’s responsibility to call out domestic and family violence within our community. We spoke to a few key people about the campaign, what resources are available, and how we can all do our part.

D

ENISE KNIGHT - MAYOR OF COFFS HARBOUR Council has funded 16 ”Coffs Harbour says No to Domestic Violence” banners along the highway as a key component of the ”Domestic Family Violence is Everyone’s Business” Campaign in Coffs Harbour. This coincides with the 16 days of activism. What is the message behind the flags that will be displayed? That Coffs Harbour LGA is making a community stance against this issue to reduce the negative impact in our community and to provide assistance to victims of Domestic and Family Violence. What is the message you hope will come through from this campaign? Domestic and Family Violence is everyone’s business and the people of Coffs Harbour are coming together to ”Shatter the Silence” and encourage people experiencing Domestic and Family Violence to seek assistance. ”Don’t be fooled. Domestic violence isn’t something that happens somewhere else.” ”Women and families that are affected by violence can be our mothers, sisters, daughters and friends. And their children. We owe it to them to take this issue seriously and make it our responsibility to create a society where domestic

Violence violence is unacceptable. Your intervention could keep a child, adolescent, and adults safe from further harm.” What changes would you like to see from this event? Open and honest discussions about DFV will result in increased awareness of this sometimes hidden issue resulting in positive community change and assistance for victims of DFV. ”All of us should be aware that by staying silent on the issue of violence, or by ignoring violence when it takes place, we all become part of the problem.” KIAH BOWEN, REGION DOMESTIC AND FAMILY VIOLENCE COORDINATOR, NORTHERN REGION, NSW POLICE In support of the overarching message that domestic violence is a crime, local domestic violence networks have worked together on awareness campaigns to reinforce the key messaging that the Coffs Harbour community does not tolerate domestic and family violence – and that domestic violence is everyone’s business. The hashtag to use for support for this campaign is: #dfviseveryonesbusiness. In addition to the banners which will be displayed along the highway, there will also be two local buses that have had the messaging ”Coffs Harbour says No to Domestic Violence” graphics placed on them which will be on our local roads for the

next six months. The buses were an initiative of the Coffs Coast Committee Against Domestic and Family Violence, and were sponsored by a range of local businesses and organisations who were keen to support this important message. A big thank you to the bus sponsors JZ Concrete, Mid North Coast Local Health District, Warrina Domestic and Family Violence Specialist Services, Mission Australia, Bularri Muurlay Nyanggan Aboriginal Corporation, Anything Earth, SERCO, Coffs Harbour Racing Club, Uniting and Wesley Mission. There will be various domestic and family violence awareness events and initiatives over the 16 Days of Activism which runs from 25th November to the 10th December. Head to the Coffs Clarence Police district Facebook page for more details. There will also be a oneday online forum “DFV is Everyone’s Business” on 25th November with presentations by Department of Health, NSW Police, Department of Communities and Justice and specialist DFV services. The link for the event registration is: https://bluesky.org.au/events/domestic-violenceis-everyones-business/ JANET CORMICK - DISTRICT MANAGER | INTEGRATED CHILD, YOUTH & FAMILY WELLBEING The Mid North Coast Local Health District promotes the importance of working together to stop violence, that it takes all citizens on all

levels to put an end to the cycle of domestic violence. The health service will be continuing to raise the profile of prevalence and how to identify and respond to domestic violence for patients, community and the Health workforce. Domestic violence prevention staff will be visiting local high schools to talk about how they can stop the cycle, as well as speaking in webinars to community and other organisations. What changes do you hope to see through raising awareness on this topic? That everyone has a shared understanding that there is never an excuse for violent or abusive behaviour. That it is everyone’s responsibility to call out disrespectful language and behaviour. Domestic violence is not a private matter. That those experiencing domestic violence will receive the support they need to live a life free of violence. That the Coffs Coast Community feel supported and empowered to seek support from and work alongside MNCLHD staff who are committed to delivering prevention programs and recognising and responding to domestic and family violence. CHIEF INSPECTOR GUY FLAHERTY, CRIME MANAGER, COFFS CLARENCE POLICE DISTRICT What is the main message for the campaign? Do not be silent. If you hear or see DV call 000, put their name to what you see, stand up for victims who often can't take that first step to change their situation, support victims with what they are going through and bring about change to their circumstance. What changes do you hope to see through

raising awareness on this topic? To reinforce that DFV is no longer tolerated, that action will be taken, that victims feel supported to break their silence, that those that can speak up and protect victims do so, that remaining silent should not be accepted, that there are avenues of support to bring about change not just to the victims but to the entire family that DFV impacts. GURMESH SINGH, MP What are your thoughts on domestic violence within the community and how can we expect the NSW Government to respond to this issue and support those affected? Domestic violence in our community is unacceptable. Everyone has the right to be free from harm and to live without fear of violence or abuse. Reducing the number of domestic violence reoffenders by 25 per cent by 2023 is one of the Premier’s Priorities, and this year the NSW Government has introduced additional funding streams to organisations providing support services. Earlier this year, the NSW and Federal Governments invested a combined $21 million to boost services and other supports during the COVID-19 pandemic. This funding helped local organisations Staying Home Leaving Violence Coffs Harbour, Warrina Women’s and Children’s Refuge, and Coffs Harbour, Bellingen and Nambucca Homelessness Support Service for Women. I applaud the ”Coffs Harbour says No to Domestic Violence” campaign and I was delighted to lend my support at the campaign

launch. I hope it has a long future promoting awareness and action on the Coffs Coast, and drives down incidents of domestic violence in our community. DANIEL DUNN, CRIME PREVENTION OFFICER, COFFS CLARENCE POLICE DISTRICT What are some places of contact for domestic violence? Domestic and Family Violence contacts include: “000” for an emergency or an incident that requires a prompt response. Coffs Harbour Police Station 6691 0799 to speak with a Domestic Violence Officer for friendly advice on criminal matters. The Police Assistance Line (PAL) on 131444 for all non-urgent Domestic incidents. Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000 for suspicious matters involving Domestic and Family violence. The Community Portal for on-line reports at www.police.nsw.gov.au . There is also 1800 RESPECT which covers the National Sexual Assault and Domestic and Family Violence Counselling service. Raising awareness through education is the key to “Shattering the Silence”. Domestic and Family Violence happens when one person in a relationship hurts another or makes them feel unsafe and it can happen to anyone — regardless of country, religion, sexuality, gender, social background socio-economic status, age or culture. Preventing criminal acts can be as simple as educating the perpetrators and breaking the cycle. Any persons, locally or otherwise have a role to play in reducing the risk of Domestic and Family Violence in the community. If you see it, report it. Ignorance is not a solution! COFFS COAST

We sat down and chatted to Matthew Jordan-Jones who owns Ernies Kitchen with Ernie to see what all the buzz is about with their unique restaurant...

M

atthew, Ernies Kitchen is considered to be one of most consistent and dynamic eateries on the Coffs Coast, why do you think this is? Ernest and I collaborate our seasonal menus with Carl our head chef – it’s a real team effort between the three of us. For example: Ernest or I may have a new idea for a dish, the kitchen team will then give the dish its technical capability and presentation, finally arriving to the customers with consistency and gusto. From here our guests embark on a food journey, as it’s not just about filling up your belly with us – it’s about having a culinary experience. Our Australian vibe concept is not totally dependent upon exotic dishes either, but by cleverly marrying known foods with native herbs and spices, with high quality produce sourced locally all cooked in house with love and passion. You're fully licenced now, how is that working with your menu? Ernest and I decided to offer our guests a “Champagne Breakfast and Lunch Package” to create another layer of service within the business, by offering linen napkins to give it that extra feel of luxury. Basically, you get a complimentary glass of bubbles alongside choices of cold pressed juices each, with a

choice of Crab Omelette, Crab Benedict or other menu options ($75 for 2). Lunch is similar, glasses of bubbles or white or red wines, which includes still or sparkling water with either fresh fish of the day, or a choice of meat dishes, plus other menu options ($90 for 2). In these difficult times, when overseas travel is on the back burner, we want our guests to feel even more pampered and special. The magic of Ernies Kitchen is all about pleasure by the way of not restricting your taste buds when dining with us – please make yourself at home and indulge. Is there a cocktail menu coming soon, rumour has it your Espresso Martinis are to die for? Yes, we are working on that now for our Summer menu. Some Australian vibe twists on a couple of classics. Once again, all the ingredients will be high quality and mixes made in house. Our new martini glasses are black and gold – total luxe – only the best for our guests! It’s been tough year for hospitality with COVID-19 worldwide, not to mention the previous year of drought, bushfires, floods here in Australia when Ernies Kitchen opened in mid-2019. What toll has that taken upon a new business like yours?

A tremendous toll – but you have to persist through these obstacles by working with the situation you’re presented with, instead of working against it. We adapted our business model accordingly to work with the constraints of guest numbers. Moreover, we believed in in our business and our team, we all nursed each other through these difficult times and (most importantly) our incredible customers kept coming in even when takeaway was the only option. Finally, the Coffs community spirit is like no other – we all support each other. Thanks Matthew.

Cedric LOPEZ HANGRY WOLF BBQ

H

ey Cedric, where did your passion for smoking meat come from? As a kid I have always been attracted to fire, the love of cooking on charcoal and wood. It all started when I was in my early teens and living in Uruguay, we used to eat assado a lot (Argentinian BBQ). I used to watch my dad building up the fire to create the perfect bed of lighting charcoal, and watching the meat cook slowly, to finally eat it with family and friends. A few years back, I got the chance to work for James Viles from Biota Dining at his popup in Sydney, and there he was smoking beef rump. The taste of that beef was like something I wanted to archive, so slowly I started smoking different cuts of beef and pork, chickens and veggies, it was so much fun that I decided to buy my first big smoker…

Cedric Lopez has experience as a chef working all over the world, and he and his family now call Bellingen home. After much of the hospitality industry was shut down with COVID-19 restrictions, Cedric took the leap and started his own business offering catering and private chef services, as well as starting his pop up stall Hangry Wolf BBQ. A whole lot of love goes into his cooking and when you taste his food you can tell! You're originally from France, how did did that experience influence your work you end up here on the Coffs Coast? today? Being a chef you get the chance to travel, At the time when I first got my head into and find work easily, and after working smoking meat before I bought my offset in Spain and England I decided to go to smoker, I was only smoking small cuts of Australia. meats on a Weber kettle. You spend your time catering for locals here on the Coffs Coast and beyond, when did you decide to go out on your own with catering and start your Hangry Wolf stall? BBQ is popular, because it is trendy, you see it everywhere – Netflix, social media – and it is now really accessible, anyone can give it a go, it's like fishing. But it's not until you give it a go that you realise how much work it takes to get it to perfection. That explains why people would take the time to wait in line to eat something that has been cooked for hours with love over fire. My business took off during COVID-19. I was out of work for the first time in my life, a little lost to tell you the truth, but after a few weeks of planning and thinking I made a big decision, and decided to go out on my own and start cooking for people in their house. WE TAKE A LOOK AT THE ART AND PROCESS OF CREATING MUSIC WITH YHAN LEAL AND WHAT HE HAS IN STORE FOR US WITH HIS NEW ALBUM RELEASE.

H

ey Yhan. Since we last spoke, you have created some new music. Can you tell us what your newest album is called and when it will be coming out? Manifesto is the name of the new album and I’ll be launching it on December 18 at the Jetty Memorial Theatre in Coffs Harbour. You write your own songs, where has a lot of your inspiration come from for this latest album? I've been inspired by so many things over the three years of writing Manifesto, but there have definitely been a few recurring themes like childhood, coming of age, love, friends, kind-hearted strangers, the overcoming of adversity, nature's beauty and mystery. These have fuelled a lot of the energy, mainly unconsciously, but as I became aware of them I let them take the lead and I became a sort of silent witness. It has been a beautiful process and I’ll treasure these songs for a very long time. Is there anything in particular that you do, or that helps you with the writing process? I try to give myself lots of time and space to do nothing, just to be open to inspiration. It’s the most exciting part, like knowing you’re about to open a present. Lyrically I avoid writing in a linear or restricted fashion, like if I’m writing about something that happened to me, I’ll try and move out like a circle to things that the event triggers in me, feelings, visuals, ideas, memories. This is my favourite way to find heaps of content for the song, then I’ll relate those things to the event or original feeling or idea.

Kindness KITCHEN

There was a real need for home cooked meals for the elderly and those who may not be able to cook for themselves here on the Coffs Coast.

T

hat's where The Kindness Kitchen got started. We chatted to Ebony Shalders about her love of helping others and why she started The Kindness Kitchen. Hey Ebony, where did the idea for The Kindness Kitchen come from? I’ve alway loved cooking and especially cooking for others. Since becoming a nurse and having many conversations with my patients, I’ve learnt that the people who need good quality home cooking the most are the elderly. It would surprise you how many elderly people live alone and are unable to cook for themselves. My plan was simple – cook good wholesome food and deliver. How does The Kindness Kitchen work? I create a menu of around 7

dishes which usually includes 2 sweets which are very reasonably priced. I post the menu and send texts on a Friday (all orders have to be placed by Friday afternoon), cook on Monday and deliver Tuesday! Why has it been so important to you personally to offer such a service? One of the best parts of my job is chatting to the elderly in the community, especially in Woolgoolga. They have such wonderful and interesting stories! But sadly so many of them are alone, lonely and not eating well. I love to cook, so why would I not cook for them? Where do you see The Kindness Kitchen heading into the future? I would like to expand the business and simply cook for more people in the community. Thanks Ebony.

THE ROCK SHOW OZ EDITION is coming to Coffs Harbour! The

Rock Show Oz Edition was the last in a long line of rock shows that the show’s co-producer, Coralea Cameron, produced

with her long-term partner, the late Aussie rock icon JON ENGLISH.

F

eaturing Steve Mulry from the Ted Mulry Gang, along with band members from Jon’s last rock show, Trilogy of Rock, Cameron says The Rock Show Oz Edition celebrates “an outstanding repertoire of classic Aussie Rock from the 60s, 70s and 80s.” Steve, the brother of Ted Mulry from hit 70s band the Ted Mulry Gang, who now fronts the reformed original band in his brother’s place, says he was humbled when asked if he’d help carry on the show in Jon’s memory. “Having lost my own brother, I of course understood how Coralea and the band members felt about wanting to honour Jon.” He continues, “I was a big fan of Jon myself, and I remember how he was one of the first to come to the party when Ted became ill. So of course I said yes straight away.” Masters Apprentices, Billy Thorpe, Bee Gees, LRB, Skyhooks, Aussie Crawl, INXS,

Angels, JPY, Cold Chisel, Air Supply, Divinyls, Russell Morris, Noiseworks, TMG, Stevie Wright, AC/DC, Peter Allen, Choirboys, Black Sorrows, Oils, and of course, JON ENGLISH, are just some of the iconic Aussie bands covered in the two-and-a-half-hour show, which Cameron says has only been slightly edited from the original version she and English had planned to tour. “We brought all our rock shows here to the area, including The Rock Show, Rock Show More, and Rock Revolution,“ she fondly recalls, “and they always sold out, sometimes two nights in a row.” Sadly, English passed away just before the tour of the Rock Show Oz Edition was due to kick off on a national tour. “He never actually got to perform this show himself,“ says Cameron, “but I know he’d be pretty happy we are seeing it through in his memory, especially for the locals in the area where he lived for the last decade of his life.”

Alyson PEARSON

ALYKAT CREATIVE

The past few months has been anything but slow for artist Alyson Pearson and she has taken the leap and created her new studio here on the Coffs Coast. We sat down with Alyson to talk about the big plans she has for the space in the future.

H

i Alyson. You’ve been busy the past few months setting up your new gallery space here in Coffs. Can you tell us where it is and what the setup process has been like? Alykat Creative Gallery & Studio is a slightly tucked away gem in the heart of Coffs City Central. Opposite Park Avenue Woolworths in Park Lane, and next to the Happy Frog café. You might’ve seen us painting the front of the building with Rainbow Lorikeets and slowly reinventing the quirky space over the last few months. The whole setup process was a combination of excitement and overwhelm and is still very much a work in progress. Though the first couple of times I found myself on my own with stuff everywhere and my artwork all over the place, I had a little pinch-me moment, as I never thought I’d reach this goal, especially this year. 48 COFFS COAST

What has been one of your favourite things so far about creating your own creative space? Funnily enough, decorating it! Having I really enjoy my partner recreate and curating and paint one of my original witnessing the Now that you’re in, designs on the outside how do you feel it excitement on other front wall, we both got will affect your artistic artists' faces and such a kick out of doing flair? it, and all the onlookers celebrating a shared Surprisingly, it’s watching the bright passion of art, actually backfired a bit. colours come to life Australiana and I’m fi nding myself doing was pretty amazing. Christmas. really long hours and I’ve really been not stopping for breaks enjoying collecting because there’s always quirky bits of furniture, something to do. So I’m having to put some hunting down vintage frames and discovering boundaries in place for myself. Yes it’s a dream the beauty of draping ivy plants, to really come true, but there are real life factors that create a positive and whimsical experience come into play, like not having a boss to keep for people who walk in, which reflects and you accountable, or workmates to have a compliments my artwork.

morning coffee and lunch with. This can result in working on freelance projects, prepping for TAFE teaching, and all the admin and business elements that keep Alykat on track, into the wee hours. In saying all of that, I’m really excited to make some time for my own creative work in the new year. The past few months have been focused on setting myself up so that I can do that, just gotta remember that! You have a group exhibition and popup event coming up in December called Alykat & Friends Australian Christmas. Can you tell us a bit about it? Earlier in the year I held a similar event for Planet Art Gallery and it was a huge success, which is something I want to continue doing; curating awesome local talent with a range of different artists. This time we’ll switch it up so it’s more commercial to help fellow local creatives and makers have an outlet to get in front of potential buyers, tourists and locals in the lead up to Christmas. It kicks off on Saturday 28th November and runs right through to Christmas Eve, so keeping COVID-friendly by avoiding a large gathering all at once. And since I haven’t had the opportunity for a Grand Opening due to COVID, I felt like celebrating the space, plus it’s lovely having my own work on display. But I really enjoy curating and witnessing the excitement on other artists’ faces and celebrating a shared passion of art, Australiana and Christmas. Who are some of the other artists involved? I originally ran the idea past three fellow local illustrators whose work is also Australian

inspired; Sarah of Flossy-P, Lauren of Thistle & Fox, and Lana of Lana G Creative, who were all immediately keen. Then I started discovering and connecting to more and more talented artists around the Coffs Coast area who also celebrate Australia in their artwork like; Mardi from Flo and Ebb, and Kelly Ann Finely. But it’s not all pretty flora and fauna, local lowbrow artist Aidan Jarvis will be exhibiting some of his crazy-cool Australian punk and alternative band illustrations that he’s been creating throughout Ausmusic Month, like Spiderbait and Tumbleweed. A couple of the tattoo artists I’ve met from being shopneighbours to King of the Hill; Megan and Amber, with their different take on Australian themed art too. There are many more amazing artists involved, with lots of art products and goodies to see and buy during the lead up to Christmas and the holidays, which I’ll be showcasing on the gallery Instagram @alykatcreative.gallery Do you have any other plans or ideas for how you’d like to use the new space? So many ideas! The space is for hire, so the options there are endless. I’m also excited to see King Tide Brewery open up in the laneway soon and have had exciting chats with other small businesses around the area about the potential of a live in the laneway mini local music festival, fairy-lit laneway food markets, casual drawing evenings in the gallery, the list goes on – lots of creative ideas being thrown around. Plus, I’ve already got the next group

exhibition in the works for February, which is to run alongside the Coffs Regional Gallery while they host the National Archibald prize exhibition, I will be curating a Local Faces portrait exhibition. Local artists creating local portraits and finding out about these characters in our community. Aside from getting Alykat Creative Gallery up and running, what else has kept you busy this year? It’s been a busy year. I do tend to juggle quite a few different projects, the nature of being a creative entrepreneur, I’ve discovered. I really enjoyed working with Deva Cacao in redesigning their compostable chocolate packaging, which ended up winning an Australian Good Design award and was a finalist in Frankie Magazine’s Good Stuff Awards for the same project – which is a huge personal achievement. I’m now finishing up another big project with local creatives SWIFF on their upcoming event, and teaching Graphic Design at TAFE Coffs Campus, while getting out to both Kempsey and Macksville where I was fortunate to work with amazing Indigenous communities on a very sensitive and important project; helping to design and create headstones for their loved ones’ unmarked graves. Those projects have been a very grounding and humbling experience amongst all the bright lights and fast talking I do on any other given day. Staying grateful and grounded, while running my own creative gallery and studio is important, I just want to keep it real and have some fun. Thanks Alyson. COFFS COAST

Marching Powder by Rusty Young

READ

Marching Powder is a shocking, sometimes darkly comic account of life in San Pedro. In this bizarre prison, inmates are expected to buy their cells from real estate agents. Others run shops and restaurants, and women and children live with imprisoned family members. Violence and crime are never far away, and the gaol contains some of Bolivia's busiest cocaine laboratories. In San Pedro, cocaine makes life bearable – even the prison cat is addicted to crack. Yet amid the corruption, brutality and the daily struggle for survival, Marching Powder is also the tale of an unlikely friendship, forged in the oddest of circumstances, between a drug smuggler and a lawyer. It is the story of one of the strangest places on earth, where horror is leavened by humour and where cruelty lives side by side with compassion.

Sony PlayStation 5 With the PS5™ console upon us, it's a big time for those who love video games. For Sony Playstation® fans, the PS5™ will offer a heap of technology that backs up Sony’s next-gen claims and showcases the company’s desire to push the boundaries of gaming. Sony likes to keep things close to their chest, so not a lot of detail about their new console has been released. Sony is promising the PS5 is the future of gaming, and if it’s right, gaming is in an impressive space.

PLAY LISTEN WATCH Rufus Du Sol’s Live from Joshua Tree On March 4, the Australian band revealed their “Live from Joshua Tree,” a 45-minute live concert film shot and recorded alone in the desert. The film takes the viewer through some of the band’s most recognizable tunes, presented in an immersive and awe-inspiring format. From “Eyes” to “Innerbloom” to the previously released footage of “Solace,” fans are sure to delight in the breathtaking composition of these beloved songs. Available to watch on YouTube.

Starting Over - Chris Stapleton It’s strange to think that Chris Stapleton only released his debut album five years ago. Before then, the Kentucky-born musician had spent over a decade writing hit songs for other country music stars, from Kenny Chesney to Luke Bryan. Upon releasing 2015’s Grammy-winning Traveller, though, he went from one of Nashville’s best-kept secrets to one of its biggest artists. On Starting Over, his fourth record, Stapleton manages to reconcile his more rebellious side with his salt-of-theearth, homebody character. He goes full outlaw with the brawny “Devil Always Made Me Think Twice”, but is tender when it comes to his gorgeous harmonies with his wife and bandmate, Morgane Stapleton, on “When I’m With You.”

he Sneaker Lounge. Love the name, what is the concept and who designed it? The Sneaker Lounge is the next phase of E Degrees (our sister store). The concept is simple – to provide a chilled and homely space for people to shop and share their love of sneakers. We designed the store ourselves – many a late night… haha. We can’t take all the credit though, it’s important to have builders who can understand your vision. Wayne, Chris and Dan of Meraki Built brought our ideas to life! Why did you decide to open a second store? We needed to expand, we were running

AMY & GRAEME WRIGHT

The SNEAKER

out of space in E Degrees. We realised the sneaker industry is bigger than just a shoe wall in a clothing store, it’s a culture and a way for people to express themselves. You gotta wear shoes right, so why not make a statement! When the opportunity arose, we thought why not, let’s give the Coffs Coast a good and proper sneaker store. Where did your inspiration come from? We’ve always done things a little differently, so when it came to drawing inspiration for The Sneaker Lounge we had to look further outside the box than ever before. First and foremost, we wanted to create a relaxed shopping environment. Secondly, we wanted each brand to stand out within that space. To do this, we took cues from each label and their global concept stores.

First and foremost, we wanted to create a relaxed shopping environment. Secondly, we wanted each brand to stand out within that space.

Lastly, we took inspiration from our own personal love of sneakers and street culture. What are some of the brands and labels you stock? We stock the most relevant brands in the market today – Nike, Adidas, Reebok, Lacoste, Puma, Asics, Converse, Vans, Dr Martens, Timberland, Birkenstock, G-Shock, and some we can’t talk about just yet. Most of our products are exclusive and can only be found in city stores. Over the last 12 months we’ve also worked hard to expand our ranges with more exclusives, that are only offered to accounts that earn the right over time – this is the cherry on top! We now have access to the Dr Martens Made In England catalogue, Converse elevated product with the Chuck

70 and Vans now give us Anaheim Factory re-issues. Adidas Boost products like NMD’s and the Nite Jogger, which have been almost impossible to get outside of the major cities until now, are now also available through The Sneaker Lounge. And this is just the beginning. What are the benefits of being able to shop with afterpay? It’s a take home layby, who doesn’t love that! What footwear is currently on trend? We are seeing the return of many retro or heritage profiles. Nike are celebrating 30 years of the Air Max 90, Adidas are celebrating 50 years of the Superstar (think Run DMC) and Dr Marten’s usher in 60 years of their iconic 8 eye 1460 boot in 2020. As

well as this, there is a lot of heat around white sneakers. Honestly though, we now live in a world where expressing yourself is the trend, so really anything goes. How did COVID-19 impact your business and what have you done differently? COVID-19 was a definite turning point for us. The Sneaker Lounge was scheduled to open at Easter, but when everything stopped, we had to take a moment to figure out our next move. In a way it has actually helped our business. It gave us the kick in the butt we needed to get online and more time to think about those small details with the new store. Overall our business is thriving! Where are you located and how can we get in touch? The Sneaker Lounge is located directly across from E Degrees at the Woolworths entrance of Park Beach Plaza. You can also shop online at www.thesneakerlounge.com.au Thanks Amy and Graeme. COFFS COAST

Look Good FEEL GOOD with CAROLE BEROS FROM LE DÃIN DESIGNS

CELEBRATING CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR We are all well aware that we have to abide by COVID safety rules and regulations, but a er 2020 and we have somehow managed to slide towards Christmas... any festive celebration is welcomed whole heartedly!

A

s this is a ‘Feel Good’ column I am going to stress that you don’t have to be going out to party to have a good time with friends and family. Any celebration is a good one. We should count ourselves lucky that we are here on the Coffs Coast and able to get out and about! Just be mindful when you send those ‘Happy Snaps’ overseas! Remember they may be more restricted than us, so send some from home or, better still, plan a little Virtual Christmas or New Year’s Eve Party. I checked how other countries that were in lockdown would cope and how important Virtual Celebration Parties are to keep connected. There is no denying how valuable apps such as Zoom, Houseparty and FaceTime have become. You’re a click away from FaceTiming a family member or playing a game of charades with friends! If social distancing has taught us anything, you don’t have to see your friends and family in real life to celebrate! So if this is the case, and a festive virtual party has to be had, DRESS UP TO THE MAX and share the love Zoom style! A friend of mine overseas mentioned that they were organising a massive Virtual Christmas Party and everyone was dressing up in something silver or gold... thank goodness it’s cold over there as my friend’s husband was wrapping

56 COFFS COAST

himself up in silver tin foil!! Not a great idea if that look was donned in Australia eek! 30 degree heat... cooking like a turkey! She went on to say that the good side to these parties was if you get too tipsy, you just switch off and fall into bed! Talk about looking for the positive! Fortunately here on the Coffs Coast, we have the luxury of being allowed to venture out. There are limitations, but after the year we have just experienced, I think we should get dressed up to the nines and make the most of everything! If you’re going out to dinner, make the effort, get you best gear out and attempt to look like a million dollars. If it’s an event you’re attending and it’s festive fancy dress, go to the next level… completely ‘over the top’ would be a good piece of advice! I have heard that a local business has booked a restaurant for their staff Christmas Party and the theme is ‘Dress for a Christmas Wedding’… so Op Shops have been searched and old wedding attire has been dragged out of the wardrobe. The idea is a mix of tinsel and bridal. I hear there’s a NYE party – not to be missed – Nicci from FOCUS and Nicole from the Surfclub are hosting an exciting event to bring in the New Year... The Met Gala. Think feathers, sequins, glitter and gold… all of the pretty things. Make sure you pop into my store

for personal styling for this event. It’s what I do! We can’t have the Social Pages back for a while, but I certainly would have loved to have taken a few photos at this one! Make this the year that you decorate the outside of your house and light it up to make someone smile as they drive past. We may feel jaded but just remember it’s such a magical time of year for the children… so get your houses sparkling. My family is involved with the Sawtell Chamber of Commerce. For the second year in a row, we have erected a giant twinkling Christmas tree in the middle of First Avenue. Festoon lights have been strung at both ends of the street and shop windows have been decorated. If I say so myself, it all looks amazing! Drive down and have a look, it’s guaranteed to give you a festive boost! If it’s just the two of you at home or you live by yourself, get a Christmas tree, any size or colour, or just put up some decorations and cheer yourself up. Invite someone over who might usually be alone and have some fun. Whatever your beliefs are, let’s all just celebrate the fact that we have got to the end of 2020, we have given it our best and next year will definitely be better!! Wishing you all a happy Christmas, and a healthy, safe and brighter New Year!!

To follow, Barbara applied a series of peptide treatments specific to each area of the face to lift, smooth and moisturise the skin. 24Kt. gold lifting serum along with eye, face and neck creams were used to prepare the surface of the skin for the application of the makeup. Barbara Wenman and her team chose a navy eye-shadow with gold highlights for the eyes and a red lipstick to compliment Janemaree’s creamy complexion. e’ve been home bound for month and we’ve explored our own backyard. In the process, we’ve been reminded what a beautiful place we live in and now the long-awaited decision to open the state borders has been made. We are itching to go. Should we go? Whilst the decision is ultimately up to the individual and your own circumstances need to be considered, we’ve put together some tips to consider before packing your bags. You have the experts on your doorstep in local travel agents so use them. They are experienced, well-travelled and trained in all things Australian (and overseas). Booking through a local travel agent will help you navigate the sometimes tricky COVID conditions that might apply to your destination. And as a bonus, you’ll have someone to turn to if things change before your departure. Travel agents also have access to exclusive packages and rates and they are experts in their field, so you’d be crazy not to use them. COVID has forced many hotels, attractions and tour operators to completely reinvent their booking conditions. It is more important than ever to carefully consider the amendment and cancellation fees, particularly if you have to make last minute changes. Sometimes it’s worth taking

Steve McEWAN REPTILE WORLD

Steve McEwan’s love of reptiles began as a child and, lucky enough, that passion followed him through to adulthood as he now lives out his dream of caring for these scaly reptiles every day. We caught up with Steve to chat about his journey and share some of his expert advice this snake season.

H

ey Steve. Your passion for all things reptiles started in childhood. What was it about these cold-blooded, scaly creatures that got you so hooked that you made a career out of it? Like every child, I was attracted to them because they were different. People thought of them as scary – I thought of them as “cool”. As I grew older I felt the need to get to know more about these interesting and unique animals and so it began. When I was a teenager I was very lucky to get a volunteer position at Eric Worrell’s Reptile Park which was located on the old Pacific Highway about two kilometres north of Gosford on the Central Coast of NSW. At the age of 15, I was then offered fulltime work as the Reptile Keeper looking

and provided information for their school projects and assignments. It is rewarding to think that by showing them that reptiles are such a big piece of wildlife ecology, they realise they play a major role in the animal world. I suppose I just get a buzz out of changing people’s opinions and attitudes towards reptiles and helping them to see how truly amazing they are. Reptile World is a family affair with each member taking on varied roles on the team – of course your sidekick Cooper is right there too. How is it working alongside each other? Yes, it is very much a family affair. My wife Debbie is my silent (and sometimes my not-so-silent) partner. And now my son Matt is also working with me in a managerial role, bringing a younger perspective to the job. My daughter Sarah is also involved, her veterinary skills proving very useful. Cooper, my sidekick of course, is here as often as I am, supervising activities. Coming into snake season, which snakes should be aware of and keep an eye out for in particular? The warmer months are when snakes are more active, particularly in the mating season which is September/October. There are a variety of snakes in the Mid North Coast area and some are very common. You may

regularly come across the good old carpet python who is extremely helpful controlling the rodent population or a red-bellied black snake just out enjoying the warmth of the sun. The common tree snake is quite often seen in backyards which have a lot of plants and maybe a fish pond. They love frogs and frogs love water, so if you are going to build a fish or frog pond don’t forget you may have a harmless tree snake visiting one day. What are some do’s and don’ts should we come across a snake? Avoiding the snake is the best way to avoid a bite. If you find yourself very close to a snake – keep still as snakes react to movement. Once you feel safe to do so, move away. DON’T try to kill or catch the snake as this is when most people get bitten. Be observant when out walking. Wear appropriate clothing when in the bush. At night, use a torch as a majority of our snakes are nocturnal. If gardening, wear a long

sleeved shirt and gloves. Keep your property clear and tidy around the house and your grass short. Snake repellers are ineffective. How can we best prepare for a snake encounter and what first aid basics should we all be up to date on? The Pressure and Immobilisation First Aid Technique for Snake Bite was developed by Professor Struan Sutherland from the Commonwealth Serum Laboratories in Melbourne in 1979. This requires the use of pressure bandages, so the best way to be prepared in case of snake bite is to have a snake bite bandage kit available to use. Bandages of choice are the indicator bandages which assist you to apply the correct pressure. A concise summary of how to perform correct first aid can be found on the Australian Venom Research Unit website. Not surprisingly we have indicator bandage kits and first aid information available at Reptile World. Thanks Steve. COFFS COAST

Physical Culture is more than just a sport – it enriches the lives of young girls and inspires the to be confident hile e bracing fitness as a ay of life. Allison Cook Pitt has been immersed in Physie since the age of five, heads up the Coffs Coast Physie Club and this year in particular could not be more proud of her students’ resilience and courage.

H

i Allison. Please introduce yourself and share your connection to the Coffs Coast. My family and I, Matt, Chelsea and Bronte, have lived on the Coffs Coast for over 20 years. Originally from Sydney, Matt and I thought it was time for a “sea change”, so we moved to Bellingen (almost to the ocean!), became the managers of the ever popular Federal Hotel for six years and had two beautiful daughters (Chelsea and Bronte). Since the Federal Hotel days, we have ventured into numerous businesses, with the Urunga Cellars being our main hub. Along with Physie of course! Tell us about your love of Physie, when it began and why you dedicate your time sharing your passion with others. My love for Physie stems back many moons ago to when I was competing as a five-yearold. However, I felt that my calling was in teaching Physie not competing in it! Although

achievements for 2020, and the Physie season hasn’t ended yet! In mid-October, our Juniors and Ladies competed at Zone level. Considering all competitions prior to this were cancelled, Zone was our first comp for the year and our club certainly proved that the highs and lows of 2020 weren’t going to affect any amazing results and club camaraderie! For our Juniors weekend, we were awarded 16 individual prizes, and three of our teams placed first! Let alone an abundance of finalists, that in a “nonCOVID” year these girls would have the opportunity to compete in Sydney for a “second chance” to perform at Nationals. On our Seniors/Ladies Zone weekend, we were awarded six individual places, out of only 13 Seniors/Ladies this year to compete (again, thank you COVID!) AND our Ladies team along with our 15 year/1st year team were both awarded the Zone Champions! We thought the year couldn’t get any better, however a couple of weekends ago BJP Physie held their annual Championship Teams competition in Sydney. To even be eligible for the Championship Teams

weekend is a “big thing” in the Physie World! Eligibility of a club is determined by the success of that club as a whole over the current and past years. Coffs Coast Physie, who are classed as an A Grade club, decided to take our 1314 year team, to compete against other A Grade Clubs. They were the only “Club from the Country”, and not only did we win our Section, we went on to win overall A Grade Champions! 2020 has certainly proven to be a year of difficulty! A lot of class practices have been held online, making a team practice not as easy as other years. However, in Physie individual pursuit is great and there’s nothing wrong with setting personal goals and shooting for them. But there’s something very special about being part of a team – where everyone’s working towards the same goal, where the teacher instils a common purpose, where it’s not about how good the individuals are but what the group can do together as one. We also have our Seniors, Open Over 40s Ladies and our placegetters at the Junior

and Ladies Zone competitions all competing at State Level over the coming weeks! I am SO excited! Physie’s not just about competitions. What does this unique form of dance teach and offer our young girls? Physie isn’t just about dancing or competitions. Physie is about empowering girls with the skills to become confident, strong women. It’s about getting fit and healthy and having a place where you feel encouraged, supported and valued. With great role models to look up to, Physie girls learn about positive body image from a young age. They’re taught to embrace fitness as a way of life and focus on what their bodies can do, rather than how they look. For anyone that would like to find out more or give it a go in 2021, how can they do so? They can contact us at ccphysie@gmail. com, like our Coffs Coast Physie Facebook page and send us a message, or visit our website, www.coffs.physie.com.au Thanks Allison. COFFS COAST

WHAT A YEAR IT’S BEEN… Coffs Coast shines during uncertain times

E

ven though 2020 has been one of the most challenging years many of us have ever lived through, we wanted to reflect and celebrate some of the achievements, innovations and stories from the Coffs Coast that have emerged during this unusual time. As a community, we celebrated when two major events came to town in early 2020. Firstly the excitement and fantastic family atmosphere of January’s Big Bash League Cricket – the Sydney Sixers playing the Adelaide Strikers, complete with nail-biting finish. Then in February the Coffs Coast went bananas for Sir Elton John and his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour concerts over two HUGE nights. Music fans, local residents and businesses came together, joined in the celebration and sparkled all over! When the world-wide pandemic hit in March, we planned and pivoted as a community. While hardship was evident in our region, the opportunities that were created by numerous businesses who innovated and continued to provide products and services was remarkable. B E N A D A M S Gavin Moroney sat down with Ben Adams to talk about what it’s like behind the lens and about the opening of his new studio Blank Avenue.

H

ey Ben, where did your journey behind the lens start? My background was initially in graphic design. I had been designing for about seven years before I picked up a camera for the first time. When we started FROM ZION (our fashion label) on the kitchen table in 2013, I knew that if I could buy an entry-level DSLR and learn the basics, then we would save loads of money by not having to outsource the design and photography... so that’s what I did. What would best describe your type of work? People know me mostly for my studio work (although I’m not limited to the studio). I like to think of my work as bold, creative and hopefully inspiring. It’s generally clean and professional with a strong emphasis on lighting. I love working in the studio with the ability to control light. When you can control 70 COFFS COAST

felt like home. We moved back from the Gold Coast about six years ago. Despite the stigma that it’s hard to build a business here, I think if you can build good relationships in business, you’ll have success in business. Coffs has been a huge catalyst for that. Describe your ideal shoot? I love it when people come to me with a vision. It gets me excited to work with them and allows me to inject my expertise. I like shoots where there is a partnership of ideas, the images are strong and we can have a lot of fun in the process. If I was to think of a particular project I’d like to work on, it would be to be commissioned to shoot for a highend magazine. You have recently opened a studio, how has that process been? Yes, I opened Blank Avenue Studio about three months ago. Setting up a studio isn’t cheap and it comes with a lot of hurdles, but

it has been an exciting process. I realised Coffs didn’t have a dedicated commercial studio space – in fact, you’ll struggle to find one between Byron Bay and Sydney. I really wanted to explore the possibility of building something that many people in the area haven’t had access to before, without having to travel to a major city. The space is large and has a lot of natural light and makes shooting in there a dream. What is your advice for the emerging photographers out there? Focus on shooting, not on followers. What I mean is, we can get so caught up with thinking followers equals dollars, or that followers will give us a level of importance. The

problem with that approach is people change their work to suit a popular trend in hopes to get famous, rather than doing what they love. Someone once asked George Lois “What do you think the trends in advertising will be in the coming year?”… his reply was “Beats me, I’ll know it when I do it”. As confident and possibly as arrogant as that sounds, he was focused on his own work, not others. That’s my point. Where can we see more of your work? You can follow me on both Instagram and Facebook. The handle is @blankavestudio or visit my website www.blankavenue.com.au For inquiries please email info@blankavenue. com.au Thanks Ben. COFFS COAST

round this time last year I received an unfortunate phone call telling me that I needed to return home because the bushfire crisis in Coffs Harbour was heating up, so to speak. I remember flying home with a feeling of apprehension and seeing nothing but smoke out the window of the plane. Landing at the Coffs Harbour airport and not being able to see the sky or very far in front of me was a scary time. These were very hot and windy days, which are terrible conditions for fires. We had a very nervous few days. We lost nearly 17 homes in the Coffs Harbour electorate, and many more homes in our neighbouring electorates of Clarence and Oxley. This was obviously a very emotional time for many people. One year on, Woolgoolga Rural Fire Service captain Jeff Luke described that day on local radio. He described how they were not certain that they were going to make it out of those fires. Listening to that one year on certainly brought back a lot of memories for a lot of people. Later in the year there were many more bushfires in the Sydney area and especially on the South Coast, which seemed to get more and more severe as the year went on. This Month’s Inspirational Fitness Story comes to us courtesy of Kristin Cameron and her Personal Trainer Jen McCulloch.

first met Kristin in July 2019. Kristin had suffered with breast cancer and through different treatments, medications and obviously inactivity that being sick can cause, she had gained weight. When I first started working with Kristin she had already lost some weight on her own and was looking for accountability and help with understanding what exercises would benefit her the most. Right from the start there was a clear determination in Kristin’s spirit to get fit and healthy. She knew that she wasn’t going to let what had happened to her impact the rest of her life. Kristin’s secret weapon is ‘Consistency’. Each morning, whether she was coming to do PT with me, join a class or do her own program in the gym, she walked through the door at our Moonee Beach gym. She walks every day to get her steps up and has educated herself about creating a calorie deficit in her diet, while still getting to have the food she enjoys. Using her diet and daily steps to lose the weight and the time in the gym to learn how to move well and get strong. Due to all of this, not only was she consistent in her life, she was consistent in her weight loss. Week on week, month on month. A true champion! IS YOUR

HEADACHE

COMING

NECK? with AARON HARDAKER

Y

ou might be surprised to learn that an estimated 1520% of headaches actually come from the neck, and not from the head. A neck headache (also called a cervicogenic headache) results when your nervous system gets a bit confused. The upper three cervical spinal nerves share the same pathway to the brain as the nerve that carries messages from your face to your brain. So sometimes the pain in your neck is misunderstood and the brain “feels” as though the pain is coming from the head. Leading local Physiotherapist Aaron Hardaker shares all the information you need to know about getting some relief from these types of headaches. What causes a neck headache? This type of headache can originate from dysfunction in the neck joints, muscles, the vertebrae or the spinal covering; so the possible causes are many and varied. The most common cause is dysfunction in the upper three neck joints. Headaches can result if these joints are too stiff or locked into an abnormal position due to poor posture. Too much joint movement is also a problem, so you can get a headache if your neck muscles are weak, allowing the joints to move with less support and control. The neck and shoulder blade muscles that originate in your

neck can also cause headaches if they become overworked, knotted or go into spasm. A fall, sports injury, whiplash or arthritis may also lead to a neck headache. How do you treat neck headache? The good news about neck headache is that relief is often immediate, once diagnosed and treated correctly. The specific treatment will depend upon the source of the problem. Stiff neck joints may need to be treated using gentle joint mobilisation techniques. Hypermobile joints may require deep neck muscle strengthening exercises to support and control joint movement. Stretching, massage or dry needling may be used to relax tight or over-active muscles, while weaker muscles usually require specific strengthening exercises. Your physiotherapist will work with you to determine a program of stretches, massage, joint mobilisation and exercise that will alleviate the problem with your neck… and ultimately will relieve the pain in your head. If you suspect that you might be suffering from a neck headache then book a FREE Physio Assessment with one of Mid North Coast Physio’s friendly physiotherapists. Whether or not Christmas is important to you, it’s pre y impossible to ignore.

ome people love everything about this time of year, and others dread it. Whatever your outlook, it’s likely to be an intensive time of social activity, financial demand, and juggling multiple expectations. So – how do we look after ourselves and each other? The images of the Christmas season often show happy, shiny scenes of family, fun and food! Presents, harmony, laughter. But for many LGBTIQ people the reality of Christmas and New Year can be very different. What if you are not ‘out’ around family and are invisible in many conversations? Or if you have to carefully monitor what you say about LGBTIQ topics? How do you handle being invited solo even when you are in a relationship, when others have their heterosexual partners invited? Or, as a transgender person, what if your requests to use your chosen name, or preferred pronouns, are ignored or ridiculed? This time of the year can bring up painful feelings. These may be related to family conflict or where other disappointments feel even stronger, such as a lack of family or friends to rely on, or questioning relationships. Money pressures can go up, with expectations to buy presents, provide food and drinks, or shout rounds at the pub. For people avoiding alcohol, drugs and/or

cigarettes, increased social activities can be root of the problem, but it might be a break, testing. especially if you’re not feeling in a good place People who are shy, or struggling with for difficult conversations. mental or physical illness, or other big events Volunteering can be a way to focus on like a break-up or job loss may just not feel helping others such as delivering meals or able to keep up with social demands. hampers for people who are homeless or in As Christmas and New Year approach, poverty, or visiting people in hospital or aged weighing up who to be with and how to care. feel safe are important steps in taking care Look for gatherings organised by LGBTIQ of ourselves and each related community groups other. or amongst friends, Being selective, or So – what are some or even organise one finding compromises of the ways to get yourself. might be possible, such as through all this? I had my own unanswered questions that were causing extreme stress and anxiety. How will this be treated? Will I need chemotherapy or radiation therapy? Am I going to die?

Jeff M A RT I N

At just 50 years old, Jeff Martin has lived through an experience he will never forget. In 2020, he was diagnosed with a Squamous Cell Carcinoma which saw his life turn upside down. Throughout the journey, Jeff was cared for by some of the best medical teams in Australia and, as we move in 2021, Jeff looks forward to bringing in the New Year surrounded by family and friends.

H

i Jeff. You're a long time local of the beautiful Coffs Coast region. Please introduce and share a little bit about yourself to our readers. I moved to Coffs when I was 14 after my Dad retired from the Royal Australian Navy. I went to high school here at Orara High before going to University in Lismore to become a Registered Nurse. I have nursed at St Vincent's Hospital in Darlinghurst and worked in the Cardiothoracic Ward looking after post-operative heart surgery patients, heart and lung transplants, as well as in their Intensive Care Unit. I’ve also worked in

Coffs Base Hospital in Intensive Care and left in 2005 to work for the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood. I turned 50 last year, have two daughters, Jera (25) and Hunter (22). I live with my partner Cindi and my Staffy called Cooper. I surf almost every day for around 2-3 hours before work and sometimes longer on my days off. I love to travel and surf in Indonesia, where I usually stay for 1-2 months escaping winter here. 2020 has certainly been a huge year for you – you were diagnosed and treated for a Squamous Cell Carcinoma. Take us back to those early days, your diagnosis and your referral to the Chris O'Brien Lifehouse,

specifically, A/Prof Carsten Palme who specialises in head and neck cancers. 2020 has been a huge year for me and my family. It started earlier last year when an ulcer developed under my tongue that just would not heal. I saw my GP who tried antibiotics before sending me to see a local Ear Nose and Throat Specialist. He did a biopsy which came back as an Autoimmune Disease called Oral Lichen Planus. This disease can affect 1% of the population, and 1% of cases can turn into cancer. The ulcer was removed by the surgeon in Coffs, and I thought that was the end of it but, three months later, it returned. The specialist tried a number of medications, but nothing worked. Eventually, I was given another referral to see an Oral Medicine Specialist in Sydney (Dr Sue-Ching Yeoh) at the start of this year. By now the lesion was almost 2cm round and very painful. This specialist took a biopsy in her surgery and told me that the ulcer looked extremely sinister. The following day she advised me that the lesion was in fact a Squamous Cell Carcinoma. I had readied myself for bad news but, once it comes, you realise you can never be ready. Dr Yeoh told me she was well connected with the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, a world class cancer treatment centre and fully operational cancer hospital in Sydney. Dr Yeoh passed my details onto Associate Professor Carsten Palme, and I received a call from Carsten’s secretary (Shandelle) within a few hours and they had organised organised for me to see A/Prof Palme in Sydney the next Monday. Before the appointment I had CT scans, X-rays and blood work taken to make sure the

cancer hadn’t spread. Really stressful days and nights followed; I had to tell my 2 daughters the bad news (this was probably harder than receiving the cancer diagnosis), let my parents, brother, sister and work know. Every question I was asked I didn’t know the answer to. I had my own unanswered questions that were causing extreme stress and anxiety. How will this be treated? Will I need chemotherapy or radiation therapy? Am I going to die? We travelled down to Sydney the day before the appointment. To say the least, it was a sleepless night. Walking into the hospital the next morning, it didn't really look like a hospital at all with its modern architecture and design. I knew this was the right place to be for my treatment. Associate Professor Carsten Palme is a highly specialised Otolaryngology Head and Neck (ENT) Surgeon with over 20 years’ experience in his field. A/Prof Palme showed me into his office, had a general get-to-know-you chat which put me at ease, and he looked me in the eye and said “I’m going to fix you.” They were the exact five words I needed to hear. The cancer

I had a lot of pain in the first few days, but it slowly eased. As the days progressed, the nurses started to remove some of the drains and tubes, telling me with each one they removed I was getting better.

seemed to be localised to my tongue, and there didn’t seem to be any lymph node involvement. The procedure I was to have is called a Partial Glossectomy (the removal of part of my tongue) with a reconstruction using a piece of muscle and skin from my hip, plus all the lymph nodes removed from the left side of my neck. Hard news to take, but the best news at the same time. A/Prof Palme immediately put me at ease. He was my type of guy with his mannerisms, the way he spoke and his professionalism. It was like talking with an old friend. I was booked in to have my surgery and the next seven days of waiting were pretty tough, but I kept reminding myself I was going to the best cancer hospital in the country, and I was going to be treated by the best doctor for this type of surgery in Australia, possibly the world. Tongue cancer is quite rare, however it is something that surgeons and doctors are

seeing more of, even in younger people. What was involved in your surgery and recovery? The surgery took seven hours. I woke up post op with tubes and drains in my neck and hip. I had intravenous fluids and a tube in my nose. A sight to behold! A/Prof Palme told me the surgery went well and I would be spending the next five days in Intensive Care. I had a lot of pain in the first few days, but it slowly eased. As the days progressed, the nurses started to remove some of the drains and tubes, telling me with each one they removed I was getting better. By day four I could feel myself getting better by the hour, and on day five I was transferred to the ward with the only thing really stressing me being the pathology report. It would let us know if the cancer had been completely removed, and whether it had spread to my lymph nodes. >>> COFFS COAST

It was hard for an amphibian like myself to be out of the water for so long, and being back in the ocean with Brad hustling for waves and ge ing barrelled was the perfect therapy I needed to finalise my recovery.

By day seven, I finally had some real food to eat. It was around this time that Carsten came and told me I could take my feeding tube out as I was eating well enough. When Carsten left, I went into the bathroom and started taking out my own feeding tube. Nurses will be nurses! It was halfway out when I could hear Carsten call out to me. I went back out into my room and he looked at me and said “What are you doing?” I said “Getting rid of this tube.” He’d meant for his nursing staff to do it! I just couldn’t wait. Then those magic words: “The pathology just came back, we got all the cancer and the lymph nodes are clear.” That was it – Associate Professor Carsten Palme was now at Super Hero status. I was laughing, crying and cheering with a bloody tube hanging halfway out of my nose! I’ll remember that moment forever. Three days later and I was back home eating pureed food and soup while the graft on my tongue healed. I spent a fair bit of time on the couch, went for slow walks but I just had to be patient and recover. As a registered nurse, you understand that patient care is integral to one’s journey. Tell us how the expertise, and support of the whole medical team at Chris O’Brien helped you through this difficult time. I am a Registered Nurse, and believe me, 84 COFFS COAST

it is rare to come across a surgeon with a personality like Carsten. As I said before, I have been an Intensive Care Nurse, but I'd never been an Intensive Care patient. The care I received was second to none. Every nurse, physio, speech pathologist, dietician and doctor were absolutely marvellous. So caring, professional, and helpful. All of these professionals looking after me were reassuring and empathetic. Once a month, A/Prof Palme offers our community members access to high quality medical care and consultations right here at the Focus Medical Centre in Port Macquarie, meaning people can be seen and treated locally. From your personal experience, what positive benefits does this offer? The fact that a world class ENT Specialist and Surgeon can be seen so close to home is a game changer. This provides the most outstanding opportunity for people in this region to be examined, assessed and attend follow-ups locally. As far as my follow-up appointments go, I can see A/Prof Palme in Port Macquarie with the trip to Port from Coffs only taking two hours, so I can attend my appointment and get back home within five hours. Travelling to Sydney was a three-day mission

and very expensive as we had to arrange accommodation as well. Putting a really horrific year behind you, what are you most grateful for and what are you looking forward to? Around two months after my surgery I began surfing with my brother again and what a feeling that was. It was hard for an amphibian like myself to be out of the water for so long, and being back in the ocean with Brad hustling for waves and getting barrelled was the perfect therapy I needed to finalise my recovery. Knowing my kids have a healthy dad is really important for me. My mum always says “Family is everything” and she is 100% right. I’m so lucky that I didn’t leave an empty seat at the table and I plan on staying around for a long time yet. The five-year survival rate for my type and stage of cancer is 70-80%. I intend to beat these odds. I believe when you are challenged, your chances of winning are directly related to how fast and hard you turn around and fight back. I love winning and will win this game of life. I have great backup and support from my family and friends, and I have my Super Hero A/Prof Carsten Palme in my corner too. How can my team and I not be victorious? Thanks Jeff.

i Meagher

Taking a holistic approach to our health has never been more important and while mind, body & soul are complex individual aspects of the being, Harrison Meagher’s unique approach has us looking at them as a whole.

H

i Harrison. Tell us when you first became interested in this way of life and why you share it with others? In my late teens and early 20s, I was quite destructive to my body and health. Luckily, I eventually saw how in control I was of both my negative health symptoms and the rejuvenating cures I needed. Around 25 I became obsessed with holistic health and what it meant to improve, optimise and enhance from this wholesome viewpoint. I realised there was so much I didn’t know and strangely this was what intrigued me most. The act of showing someone else how deep and expansive one’s health can really go quickly became a passion and it is what led me down the path I am on now. How would you explain holistic health and what are its benefits? Holistic health approaches healthy living and longevity considering the main components impacting an individual positively or negatively, both internally and externally. When someone comes to me with a specific health goal I look at their sleep hygiene, exercise habits, nutrition protocol, stress management, exposure to environmental toxins, spiritual practices and even their relationship with their passions and purpose in life. Its main benefit is treating a person as a wholesome and complex unit. Assisting and overcoming challenges within a complicated machine, rather than segregating and bandaging up isolated symptoms. 88 COFFS COAST

focus

Tell us about your unique approach to holistic health? Helping someone from this holistic health perspective can at first be daunting, as there is so much to consider. Also while I love all of this, not everyone is as enthused. I aim to start every interaction from this place and come at it with an open heart. My main approach is twofold. First I break everything down into a simplistic and easily digestible manner. I try to emphasise that while many components may be challenging, they are all doable and with a bit of patience and discipline any health goal is possible. Then I compassionately empower each client with the tools needed to help them see that their body loves them, their body is amazing and it is full of healing potential just waiting for them to unlock and harness. What are some of the changes people should first make when trying to live a healthier lifestyle? I start all my clients off with a four-pillar approach. These pillars or components I consider to be the most important and you want to lock them down first for any healthrelated goal or objective. First is movement. This would include a healthy exercise regime of functional strength training, high intensity interval routines, some steady state cardio for mental clarity and deep stretching or Yang yoga for flexibility. Second is recovery. Making sure we schedule and implement enough rest and down time during exercise sets and busy life events. I like to teach meditation, breath work,

foam rolling and restorative Yin yoga within this pillar so we can provide our bodies the peaceful stillness they desperately desire. Third is sleep. Probably the main component in terms of importance. If sleep is unhealthy, we have trouble gaining muscle, losing weight, keeping focused, controlling our emotions and even staying on top of food cravings. Eliminating blue light from technology at night, not eating or exercising too late and making sure you are in bed for at least 8 to 9 hours are my biggest recommendations for healthy sleep. Fourth is nutrition. There is not one diet or style of eating that fits everyone, However, one thing that most of us do have is a damaged gut/leaky gut. Based on this I recommend eliminating all added sugar, most non-organic or non-fermented grains and rancid vegetable oils. When these elements are combined with the gut issue we see problems related to weight gain, inability to grow/sustain healthy muscle tone, neurological implications, joint inflammation and even chronic disease. If people want to find out more about your services and get their health on track, how can they connect with you? I am always open to taking on new clients and offer a free consultation to get started. To get in touch with me you can either check out my website at www.harrisonmeagher. com, give me a call/text on 0434 231 749 or look me up on all social media platforms at @harrisonmeagher. Thanks Harrison.

Saint Augustine's Primary School Principal, Peter Wa s, looks back over an amazing year.

espite all of the COVID restrictions, the school was able to deliver a show-stopping musical. Tell us how you did it! Rehearsals had begun before the rules and regulations came into play so we were already committed to some extent. The regulations stated there was to be no singing as a group and no parent audience but the students were so excited we decided the ‘show must go on!’ We decided to record each child individually and for the chorus parts voices were digitally mashed up to create an amazing result. On the actual performance the children lip-synced to the recording but you would never have known. An extraordinary performance and exceptional effort from staff. What were some of the challenges faced and how did you overcome them? As the pandemic worsened earlier in the year it became clear we would have to adapt quickly to many children learning from home. We were aware that there would not only be academic but social challenges for many students so the teachers worked very hard to create an engaging, achievable program but also contacted all children via Zoom regularly through each week. We also allowed families to borrow laptops and iPads from school, with 350 devices in homes (and returned!). The staff were amazing in quickly grasping new technology and ways of teaching. 92 COFFS COAST

W

hat are some of your highlights during this unusual year at the College? I want to start by saying how impressed I was with all our students, their approach to learning during the lockdown periods and the way they continued with what was important for them at the time. Our students needed to be resilient (like all students) and they discovered that they were able to get through difficult periods with support and I am so proud of their positive attitude and their willingness to change and adapt as required. One of the most popular developments this year has been our very own custom-built mobile coffee van ‘The Screaming Beans’ where staff and students can start the day with their favourite brew. This new venture provides inhouse barista training for our Hospitality VET students who can reach their competencies on campus during school time. Without doubt, the generosity and expertise of staff during a difficult year is one of the things I will remember most from 2020. The way that they adapted from face-to-face to online learning, visits that they made to student’s homes, the support they gave to families who struggled and their genuine team approach to the many never-before-seen challenges we

2020 – the year of resilience and gratitude. In a year filled with many challenges, the power of community shone through, highlighting that together, we can get through anything! We had a chat to Principal, Michael Carniato to find out more... faced together. They are an amazing group of professionals. Can you tell us a little about the Social Justice Program that the Year 12 students focused on this year? The programs this year supported the good work of Pete’s Place, a drop in centre for people experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness and OZ Harvest the local food rescue organisation which distributes food to local charities. The students set out to donate funds and also their time to these organisations as they wanted to make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate at a local level. This year the graduating class raised over $12,000. Social justice initiatives such as these give our students the chance to take action and empowers them to be part of a solution. Being ‘good citizens’ is an important part of who our students are called to be. We were also involved in a crazy sock day promotion raising money for Catholic Mission in Cambodia, the students raised $875 toward educating the poor. You have had some outstanding student success this year, tell us more. Even with the many restrictions this year, our students continued to excel across multiple fields. Some outstanding achievements include: • Emily Mitchell 1st place Year 12, Keegan Ford 2nd place, Benjamin Niethe 3rd place • Outstanding HSC major works: Maya Hallawell

- ARTEXPRESS selection. Major work on display at the Art Gallery NSW (Feb-Apr) • Amy Hancock - NESA nomination for OnSTAGE. • Charlotte Hart - major award winner 2020 STANSW Young Scientist Awards • Ausrae Harrison - Selection to the Samoan Nation U21Netball Squad • Nathan Zawadzki - Australian Olympic Change Maker Award • Keegan Ford - ADF Innovators Award • Tournament of the Minds - Honours Award for the Mid North Coast - Autumn SearleDomberelli, Samara Satyanand, Lilly Gleeson, Connor Gleeson, Kai Robinsen, Harrison White and Ava Harrison • Bond university scholarships: Olivia Wilson - Judge John Newton Mooting Excellence Scholarship; Paulini Kaidrokia - Excellence Scholarship. What is on the horizon in 2021 We are really excited about the new buildings which will be ready during 2021. The new PDHPE precinct will open in February and the Library and Learning Centre in September. These two buildings have been designed with the latest innovations in learning spaces in mind, our students will continue to be able to work in contemporary spaces with a focus on engaging the learner. appy 40th birthday MHOC! How did you celebrate this special occasion? As you can imagine, there were many plans – including dinners, family picnics, visits from previous principals, presentations and performances – that had to be cancelled due to the COVID restrictions, but we were still able to mark the occasion with a digital photo library, the opening of our time capsule and a very special birthday cake. May I take this opportunity to pay tribute to the families who were involved in the establishment of the school in 1980. Your vision and commitment have borne much fruit! It’s pretty special when a community comes together to build a school. Tell us more about the school’s beginnings. The school was originally part of Saint Augustine’s parish and opened in 1980 with 130 students. I believe the land was donated by the Hargreaves family and, over the years, a defining characteristic of the school has been the active involvement of families. We’re old enough now to be seeing our past students enrolling their children in the school, something we love to see. 96 COFFS COAST

Toormina High School is a comprehensive co–educational high school with one of the largest Special Education Units in NSW. The school enjoys a beautiful environment and excellent facilities and has a fine reputation within the local and wider community. Toormina High School celebrates its 40th Anniversary in 2020 and we catch up with Robyn West, Careers Adviser, who has worked at the school for the past 20 years, to talk us through some of the school’s proudest moments in that time.

H

ow has your Special Education Unit met the needs of our students with a disability? At Toormina High School, we focus on a whole school approach to improving learning outcomes for every student. Over the years we have worked hard on integrating students with a disability into whole school activities such as main stream subjects, elective subjects, year camps, formals and the Student Leadership Team. One of the highlights for our Special Education Unit is the café we run twice a term. By inviting the community into our school, students engage in developing work-related skills which has proven to be extremely successful. How important is it for students with a disability to get early career support? It is so important to set students up to succeed in the workplace. At Toormina High School, we focus on support that assists with access, travel, and work related skills such

as communication, punctuality and work ethics. We also partner with community organisations like Key Employment (KE) to deliver transition to work programs. These processes have been developed to ensure success for all of our students. Why is it important to partner with organisations like Key Employment? Toormina High School has worked in partnership with KE for over 20 years. Programs such as KAPOW and KIKSTART have assisted our disengaged students over the years by offering alternative education pathways and meaningful employment. It is vital for us to work with organisations like KE to ensure every student does succeed. KE have also been big supporters of our school community, donating the coffee machine for our Special Education Unit Café and more recently giving us free access to their new facility at West High Street including the youth hub and grounds.

Does Toormina High School have any success stories? We have had many success stories over the past 40 years, too many to list individually. We have seen students who have gained apprenticeships, found meaningful employment and gained their driving licence with assistance from KE. Recently one of our students completed a traineeship in car detailing and is successfully fulfilling his work dreams. We are grateful to be able to work alongside organisations like Key Employment to assist our students to achieve their dreams. We hope to be doing the same and even more over the next 40 years. If you are a part of the Toormina High School community and would like to hear more about the transition programs Key Employment can offer, speak to Ms West or feel free to give Simon Booth at Key Employment a call on (02) 6691 9999.

he Coffs Harbour Regional Conservatorium is the main provider of music education and performances on the Coffs Coast and contributes to the local arts and culture industry through visiting artist concerts, staff and student concerts, exceptional workshop and learning opportunities, school music programs and inhouse music tuition. 2020 has certainly been a challenging year for the region, with arts and cultural activities suffering significantly at the hands of COVID-19 restrictions. The Coffs Conservatorium has continued its education and performance programs, though the way these have been delivered has changed throughout the year. With online lessons to live streamed online concerts, the continued service provision to the Coffs Coast community by the Con has been something to be proud of as our region deals with the pandemic. As the year draws to a close, I look back on the past 12 months, how we have negotiated the challenges, our commitment to exceptional music education and performances and I look forward to a fresh new start in 2021.

The Coffs Con has an exciting concert series planned for the upcoming year, with some of the country’s finest professional musicians visiting the Coffs Coast to perform to our audiences and work with students from the region. We’re in the process of launching a fundraising campaign to begin the refit and renovation of the adjacent building, which will become new teaching facilities once completed. The project involves building a state of the art drum room, a dedicated Early Childhood Music room and extra teaching studios to accommodate the ever growing education programs at the Con. If you would like to contribute to the project, please either go to the ‘Support Us’ page on our website (www. coffscon.org.au), call 6652 1592, or come in and chat with me, Patrick Brearley, to see the existing space to be renovated and plans for the future. EDUCATION

UPDATE with NICK JOHNSTONE

FROM BISHOP DRUITT COLLEGE

PATHWAYS BEYOND CAREERS EDUCATION

C

areers education is more important than ever before. In past decades, careers education consisted of one week of work experience and learning how to write a CV and application letter. Times certainly have changed. Careers education in more recent times focuses on a suite of initiatives. These provisions need to include: 1. A stable careers education program that starts in the primary years with dedicated professionals 2. Learning from regional and national labour market information and trends 3. Addressing the needs of each student with personal careers coaching 4. Linking the curriculum to the careers program 5. Building partnerships with employers, other schools and wider community 6. Encounters with employers and employees on and off campus 7. Regular work experience placements 8. Encounters with further and higher education opportunities 9. Moving from education, to partnerships and then to pathways. Careers Education has evolved recently and is often referred to as Pathways Coaching. This new name highlights the importance of schools to move outside their traditional boundaries and into the community to build partnerships and create genuine pathways for each student. The new process supports students in their subject selections, ensures regular meetings with parents and students and researches individual pathways. The Bishop Druitt College (BDC) careers program leaves nothing to chance. Each 102 COFFS COAST

focus

student has an extensive lead into Years 11 and 12 with our nationally recognised Careers Pathways Coach, Mrs Gina Driscoll. Gina is supported by the student’s Tutor Teacher, Year Coordinator and their Academic Mentor. This support mechanism is complemented by our onsite careers days, local and regional careers events and tours, as well as mini-classes and taster courses to assist each student's vocational development. Year 10 students participate in two full days of career development activities and compulsory work experience. Many students also seek additional work experience outside of this designated time. For some students this careers planning process leads them to either internally-run VET courses or external VET courses held at TAFE. Many students also move to School Based Apprenticeships or Traineeships during Years 11 and 12 as part of their HSC studies. For others, their career plans can include transitioning to full- or part-time work, cadetships or full-time apprenticeships. Most of our students, however, move through a more traditional university pathway. This process too has changed with some of our students starting university while still studying in Year 11. This pathway ensures that the student is accepted prior to completing their HSC. This year, Bishop Druitt College has experienced a record number of early enrolment offers from universities across the country. This year, 70% of our Year 12 cohort have applied for university study. This figure is more than twice the regional mean. BDC encourages students to apply for early entry schemes and participates in the SCU Headstart program and School Recommendation Scheme Early Entry Pathways processes. This year, over one quarter of our students received early offers or

scholarships from a variety of universities prior to the start of November. HSC students have often completed an accelerated HSC course by the time they enter Year 12. The BDC leadership team works closely with each group of students to ensure their senior common room, senior study hub, library access and holiday tutorials are assisting them with their final years of high school study. BDC prides itself on instilling a level of trust and confidence in our senior students. The often quoted ‘it takes a whole village to raise a child’ is an essential one in the context of careers education and pathways coaching. In recent months, the Australian Independent Schools NSW office has supported Bishop Druitt College, Clarence Valley Anglican School and St Andrew’s Christian School in Grafton in forming the Coffs Clarence Independent Schools Careers Hub. The aim of this new organisation is to provide a key contact for employers to engage with local schools to create long term partnerships, to share industry wisdom and ultimately to provide careers education opportunities and pathways for our young people. If you are interested in supporting careers education contact your local school or if you are keen to support this new Careers Hub, contact Gina Discoll - gdriscoll@ bdc.nsw.edu.au. Finally, I wish to recognise a new Commonwealth Government resource for our young people. The Your Career website (https://www.yourcareer.gov.au/) appears to go a step beyond the existing government websites that many schools have used in the past such as the MyFuture or JobOutlook resources. It also includes access to the school leavers’ information kit.

hould I buy a motor vehicle in my name or through my business? Whether to buy a vehicle personally or through your business (let’s say, a company) is a question we’re commonly asked. The answer is… It depends. But there are some guiding principles to follow. Firstly, be honest with yourself about how the vehicle will be used, whether for work or personal reasons. Buying the wrong way around could create more admin headache than it’s worth if you don’t consider this up front. Next, it doesn’t really make sense to have expensive cars owned by your company. There’s a cap (currently $59,136) on how much depreciation and GST can be claimed on a vehicle purchase. Also, these caps aren’t considered on sale of the car so if you paid $120,000 and sold for $99,000, your GST claim would be capped at $5,376

when buying but you’d be liable to pay GST of $9,000 on sale. GST in general can be claimed in both cases, whether personally (by a sole trader) or by the company. Of course it’s important that the buyer is GST-registered and that it’s only claimed in line with the work use of the vehicle. In determining a work use percentage, individuals can use either use the Logbook or the Cents-Per-Kilometre method. Companies claim all vehicle costs but “square up” the personal use of the vehicle through paying Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) or via a contribution from the person using the company car for personal reasons (think of it like renting the car from work). Motor vehicles are fundamental to many businesses and so long as they’re priced below the cost limit, can often be claimed in full. For more tailored advice on motor vehicles, contact CharterNet Coffs Coast today.

ith two Sydney locations, what made you choose Sawtell for your new French Basket? About a month and a half ago, we came up this way to visit family and we saw the “For Lease” sign when we were cruising through Sawtell. So at the beginning of November, we came back with our manager from Sydney and signed the lease! Jacobe is originally from Byron Bay, so he grew up this way for camping, surfing, fishing and just enjoying the Coffs Coast. We have wanted to make the move for a while, so it worked out well. What aspects of French culture will you bring to Sawtell? In French culture, great importance is given to food and it’s all about being social. On the weekend, we always invite friends over and have good conversations while we enjoy a charcuterie and cheese board together with some quality food paired with a nice glass of wine. This is what we want to bring to Sawtell at night – the French way of doing tapas and drinks. During the day we will have our traditional French bakery with bread and pastries, which are baked in-house daily all day long. Also, takeaway coffee is not really a thing in France. an you tell us a bit about your career and what led you to start Estetik MedKlinik? I graduated from University of New South Wales with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery in 2001. After completing my resident medical officer years in Sydney, I specialised in General Practice. Since 2004 I’ve practiced family medicine in the Coffs Harbour area, and in 2007 I was awarded my Specialist General Practice qualification FRACGP. Apart from providing exceptional holistic medical care to my patients, I followed my passion into cosmetic medicine. Three years ago, I opened my clinic, Estetik MedKlinik. I became the principal cosmetic doctor, practice manager and social media administrator, all rolled into one. To tell the truth, for someone technology challenged, becoming my own social media expert took me on a steep learning curve. Being a solo practice, my patients know they’ll see me for all their assessments and treatments. I find it really rewarding to talk with and give advice to my clients. Often, I see women who’ve never had any cosmetic procedures before, or had them done a long time ago. They notice skin changes on their face over time, and wish to improve them, but don’t know where to start, or what their options are. So I take the time to explain all 106 COFFS COAST

ell us about yourself, Sam Wardman, the creative woman behind Sama & Co. I’m a local, born and raised here and have run a marketing agency for the best part of the last decade. When did you first decide to become an interior designer and how did you get 108 COFFS COAST

started with your business in the design industry? When I started to get asked by clients a few years back to help them design the brand experience in the physical space rather just in digital and print. I have always had an interest in interiors and home décor, so the transition was not hard for me and it made logical sense to start in commercial interior design. Since then, I have been further studying interior design and am now ready to embark on a stand-alone business offering commercial and residential

interior design services. Is there a particular design style you favour and do you have your own design aesthetic? I absolutely love mid-century modern meets Palm Springs style homes, and I probably err on the side of modern architecture than more traditional structures. But I respect all styles of architecture and can usually find a connection to it in some way. Interior design in residential spaces is very personal so it’s about working with the client to achieve an aesthetic that

I enjoy loads of designers and architects I find on Instagram and in magazines from around the globe. What is your business ethos and what services are on offer for those who chose to collaborate with you? Our ethos is about creating residential and commercial spaces that are engaging, memorable and inspiring. We find ourselves in a time where it's important our homes function well and make us feel good. What advice would you give to anyone looking to revamp their home? I am a big believer in people always renovating homes or choosing décor that makes them happy rather than fits a style. Because ultimately, they have to live in it, and it should bring them joy more than kudos. So, start with exploring what you like and create a mood board, either in Pinterest or a physical board to get your design aesthetic for the space clear. This research phase then makes it easy for you to pick selections and finishes that fit within the design theme of the space. Secondly, measure everything! Know your ceiling height, floor space and furniture dimensions. Because it's critical to choose pieces that will be functional in the space and not overwhelm it because they are too big or too small. Let's get personal... what else are you passionate about besides your work? I love to travel and get a lot of creative inspiration from different things I see and experience. Whether it’s colours, architecture, landscapes, art or food – the different cultures are vibrant and inspiring. I also enjoy swimming, walks and exploring the different cafes and restaurants around the Coast. When I am not out and about, I like to learn new dishes to cook and try them out on willing friends and family I have over for dinner. None have complained yet, so that’s good. What’s your most treasured belonging? Gosh that’s a hard one! I think it is probably a framed photo of my nana (who passed away) and my mum which sits beside my bed. I also really enjoy the original artworks hanging throughout my home. What's something people may not know about you? If you haven’t met me, then it would be the very loud laugh that I boast! I greatly dislike runny eggs and I love any type of Asian cuisine. What can't you live without? Coffee!!!... and I should say my partner Reid. Thanks Sam. COFFS COAST

SolarBright

R

obert – please introduce yourself and your role at SolarBright. I moved to Coffs back in 2004 to be closer to family that had moved here. I love Coffs and the lifestyle and community here. My role at SolarBright is an energy consultant. I sit down with families or businesses who are considering solar, look at their bills and energy usage, and advise them on the best solar solution to reduce their power bills. It’s very satisfying. My customers get a solar system that pays for itself and puts money in their pockets for years to come and I also help them lower their carbon footprint. A typical home 6.6kW solar system saves about nine tonnes of carbon emissions per year! What are the advantages for locals using a company with a local presence like SolarBright? Since 2011 over 700 solar companies have come and gone in Australia, leaving thousands of families stranded with worthless warranties, so it is important to choose your solar provider

I sit down with our customers, answer questions and help them make the right choices. And their system is supported by a family owned business that has installed over 12,000 systems since 2008. Having been around for 12 years, SolarBright is a leader in the field in terms of the products, pricing and service. Can you tell us a bit more about the systems themselves and how small and big you can supply? As a Clean Energy Council Approved Solar Retailer, SolarBright supplies the best solar technology from the leading brands at accessible prices. LG solar panels are the best due to superior lifetime power production backed with a 25-year product warranty. They

are perfect for coastal areas like Coffs due their corrosion resistance. We are one of only 25 LG Solar Platinum Partners across Australia as well as being a Certified Tesla Powerwall Installer. System sizes can range from 5kW upwards for homes, and right up to 100kW commercial systems for businesses. For a business, installing a solar system is a smart decision and pays for itself. Why should people switch to clean energy? Clean energy from solar not only helps the environment, it also reduces your power bills! It’s a home improvement that pays for itself and puts money in your pocket, adds value to your home, and helps protect you against rising electricity costs. Clint and Sam own Gu erVac here in Coffs Harbour and they belong to the world’s first and largest gu er vacuum cleaning network! We had a chat with these guys as we wanted to find out more….. CLINT AND SAM

H

GUTTER V A C

i Clint and Sam, what is actual gutter cleaning about and why is it important to engage your services? Many people think it is just leaves that are required to be removed from a gutter, but under the leafy matter, you will generally find a layer of ‘sludge’. This sludge is the real problem in a gutter as it can not only block the gutters but also rust the gutters. Overflowing gutters can cause extensive water damage to a property. When a gutter is blocked and water is overflowing, a fair amount of the water goes over the back of a gutter and into the ceiling cavity or down the walls of a property. This means that over time, you can really have extensive damage to a property. When and why did you start your business? We started our business 10 years ago when we moved with our four children to Coffs Harbour. We had quit our jobs and sold our house in Victoria and picked Coffs Harbour for a sea change. The kids ranged in age from 13 to 1 so we wanted a business that suited our lifestyle and a service business seemed like it would best for our family. THE SELLERS MARKET

G

’day, for those who don’t know me, I have been an Real Estate Agent on the Coffs Coast for the last 15 years, and as a little side story, I was actually the original Real Estate column writer when the Coffs Coast Focus Magazine started here many years ago. Apart from being a Licensed Real Estate Agent, Licensed Stock and Station Agent, Auctioneer and Business Owner, I was also a Board Member of the Real Estate Institute of NSW. Like everyone, I am still learning more every day, but let’s hope I have a basic understanding of how the property market works. Lots of things have changed over those years and, let’s be totally honest, it seems like the world has gone mad in 2020. The COVID pandemic has also affected our property market in many ways. In my opinion, as with many outside influences that are beyond our control, the changes have really been brought about by our fear of the unknown. At present the market has really become a ‘sellers market’, with some unbelievable prices being achieved because of buyer demand and competition. But what has caused this? Put simply, the fear of the unknown has led many potential sellers to put off making the decision to place their homes on the market and, as such, the volume of properties coming to market has greatly reduced. 126 COFFS COAST
