At one time it was actually optioned, and I really wanted Celia Paquola to play the character based on me. She’s hilarious and self deprecating, but also got the vanity of the character. Plus, she’s got a big nose and is short! I don’t think she was impressed when I mentioned this. It has to be someone who can take a really self centred loser and make her funny and lovable. You still spend quite a bit of time behind the scenes working at different music festivals. What have you enjoyed most about working on the music scene for all these years? At a few festivals, like Meatstock and FOTSUN, I work backstage with the artists - and that is super fun, because it’s like hosting your own mini party, making sure everyone is fed and watered. I like the hostess role. At the other festivals I work in the campground and organise our camp marshals, our vollies and our traffic people to bump in and out all the campers. At Splendour we can put in about 20,000 people in two days. It’s amazing, and I love trying to make it more efficient each year. Or, maybe I’m a sucker for punishment? People may not know that you put a lot of your time into a charity called Red Goes Faster. What is Red Goes Faster ,and why is it so important to you? Red Goes Faster has been running for several years now, but has officially gained its not for profit charity status. It’s pretty amazing. We work with Wheelchairs for Kids, based in Western Australia. They box up rough terrain wheelchairs that are free to be sent to developing nations around the world. My grandmother and my aunt both spent the majority of their lives in wheelchairs as a result of polio and encephalitis. I can see how important mobility is not just for the person in the chair, but also for the family. This seemed like a great way to honour their memory and legacy and also do something to change the lives of young people in a positive way. https://www.facebook.com/ redgoesfastermorocco Since its inception, how many wheelchairs has Red Goes Faster has Red Goes Faster been been running for able to supply to children several years now, but has who have needed help? After my dad died, I was doing a lot of portraits of really sad, melancholy kids, 'cause that was pretty much my soul at the time.

I come from a very creative family, so it’s always just been part of my life. I worked in Paris as a portrait artist for a couple of seasons, so there I really mastered the ability to create a life-like portrait in a short time and run the business side of things as well. I love to create, and I also really enjoy collaborating with clients on commissions to tell their personal story as well. For me, art is my escape, but also my healer and my therapist. Glasses play a role in a lot of your artwork. Why glasses? Ha! After my dad died, I was doing a lot of portraits of really sad, melancholy kids, 'cause that was pretty much my soul at the time. One day I was looking

through photos and found one of my brother, Robin, who spent my childhood pinning me down and dripping spit within inches of my face. He, like me, was the kind of kid who loved to wear all his favourite things at one time. He had on a yarmulke that he bought in France, shorts, a striped shirt, cowboy boots and these thick glasses. I thought he was so funny and cute, so serious in his pose. I called my youngest son up, who has a similar personality to my brother, and dressed him up the same. I did a painting of him sitting on a giant squirrel with the word “SKWERL” written underneath, to teach Aussies how to pronounce it. It sold immediately, so I knew this character

resonated with more than just me. It has become a bit of a trademark now. How important is it to you to have a creative outlet to reset? Well, how important is breathing? It’s pretty much the same for me with creativity. Where can we find out more about Carmel Debreuil? You can contact me any time through my Facebook page as Carmel Debreuil - artist. My illegible last name makes it easy to find me on Twitter, Insta and all other social media. You can also check out my web page: www.carmeldebreuil.com - or stop in to Red Rock and ask for the Canadian chick. Thanks Carmel. COFFS COAST

I did most of my teaching degree in Coffs. After finishing my degree, I moved to the Gold Coast, where I spent my career teaching full-time, but mostly on a casual basis. Just shy of two years ago I met my partner, Tayla, who is funnily enough from Bellingen. I'm obsessed with Aussie bulldogs, so it didn't take long until our boy, "Vinnie", came along. You're a primary school teacher in remote Queensland now. How did that move come about? Yeah, I teach at Cloncurry State School, P 12. The school is in a small remote community about four hours south of the Gulf of Carpentaria in Queensland. A job opportunity came up, so we took the plunge. It was a difficult decision to make. I enjoy my surfing, and all our mates are on the Gold Coast. But, we were both keen to get a bit of the outback culture, live in a small community and save some money along the way. I'm the relief teacher for the school, but I'm employed on a full-time basis (so I get paid in the holidays). I call it the full-time casual! MARK HENDERSON Behind

THE LENS Mark Henderson is a local photographer WHO LOVES TO CAPTURE LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHS AND MAKE THE MOST OF THE COFFS COAST'S BEAUTIFUL LOCATIONS. Nicci Seccombe had a chat with Mark, to find out more …

H

i Mark. When did you first pick up a camera? I was given my first 35 mm SLR camera at the age of 14 and have been capturing images ever since. How do you make sure that the thing, person or landscape you want to shoot looks the way you want it to? Preparation is key. I like to mentally prepare for the image I want to capture by visualising what I want from the image, like the story it tells, composition, positioning and lighting. If it’s a landscape, I will look for a good foreground and composition, then wait for good light before taking the shot. Capturing people is more of a challenge, as you need to apply all the aspects of a landscape shoot and capture emotion and passion. People can be the most satisfying subjects to capture, due to the complexity of movement, lighting,

emotion and composition; when all these come together, you can capture magical moments. I love that. From your point of view, what makes a good picture? So many things make a good picture: passion, creativity, simplicity, complexity, emotion, colour, light, clarity; the list goes

on, but in reality what makes a good picture is in the eye of the beholder. Photography is an art - it's a form of expression. A good picture is entirely subjective to the viewer. In my opinion, any photo can be a good photo if it tells a story, shows expression or emotion, or simply captures the viewer's eye. Since the photography techniques and

equipment change quickly, it is important to stay up-to-date. What do you do to always keep up with the times? Equipment technology is changing continuously. In reality, it may help the photographer capture the image easier, but not necessarily any better. Some of the yesteryear photographers using outdated equipment still have outstanding images that compete even with today's standards; I think it's their passion and creativity that makes the

difference. It's prudent to keep up to date to a point, but it’s a very expensive exercise to do so. I update equipment only if there is a definite visual and usable advantage. Nowadays almost everyone has access to devices with which it is possible to take pictures. What do you think is the difference between a professional photographer and any other hobby photographer? In reality, not much difference; one gets

paid, the other doesn’t. In saying this, the hobbyist may vary in image consistency or quality. But at a professional level, a client will pay for the service based on prior work; therefore, a professional photographer should be consistent with his image quality and maintain a certain congruency. This is the expectation that the client has paid for, and in my opinion is the main difference between the two. >>>

Who influenced you the most? Is there any other photographer you consider as a kind of idol? Yes, I have a few photographers I consider as inspirational who have in some way or another influenced the way I photograph today. A good friend and fellow photographer, James Taylor, encouraged me to take my passion of photography to new levels, and I’m grateful for his encouragement (thanks, Jim). Since then, I have grown and gained further inspiration from world renowned photographers such as Ansel Adams, for his amazing landscapes; Joel Grimes, for his modern day artistic and surreal portraits; and Robert Frank, for his street photography. They have all helped me carve my own style of photographic art and expression.

We caught up with Carole Beros from Le Dãin Designs, to learn about HER STORY AND FIND OUT WHAT HER PLANS ARE for the future ...

arole, how long have you been living on the Coffs Coast? I am originally from Jersey, which is situated off the Coast of France. The name of our store, Le Dãin, is Jersey French and is my family name. I moved up here from Sydney’s Northern Beaches over 25 years ago. We bought a house in Sawtell and started a family. We are still in that same house and still loving the area. How long have you been in the fashion industry? It seems like most of my life on and off, really. I was initially going to follow a career in fashion design in London, but ended up in Australia. I ran a wine bar and catering business in Sydney and followed through with that here. So, fashion and food have been the major players in my working life! I have always been involved in fashion, writing, styling and design, so I added the racing industry and FOCUS to the list. I guess I could say I have been pretty busy ha ha! The store in Sawtell has been open for seven years, and the label Le Dãin Designs was launched 15 years ago. Did you have a business plan during the closure of your store during COVID lockdown? Yes! We launched a Facebook Boutique, which ran from my personal and Le Dãin Page. We had specials running and made fashion videos to sell from and to entertain our customers, or anyone who needed some retail therapy. We

also offered free delivery and a fast and friendly service. To be honest, the hard work paid off, and it actually really kept us afloat! We have decided to keep this addition to the business going. What are your plans for the future? We had a few events lined up, but we will just have to wait and see. At FOCUS I obviously can’t provide you with a social page just yet, but I am going in with a positive attitude and hoping for the best! We hear you have a new concept to add to the services at Le Dãin Designs; tell us about it. We have always advocated that we dress ladies of all sizes at any age for every occasion and as times have changed, we have seen the need to make life easier for our customers. We will be joining forces with other businesses, to create a combined service where you can get styled and dressed, beauty and hair appointments arranged, and advice given about where to go to get ahead with being mentally and physically healthier. La Fleur D’Alyse Cosmetic laser and Medispa, which is owned by Barbara Wenman, will be involved with the beauty side of the venture. We can also look after the gents; we liaise with the team at Jack Simmons Mensland, to spruce up your man! Great present idea! You will also be offered a before and after mini shoot to inspire you! This is not just a spending spree, and it’s not all about sales! We will also have a few free feel good services available. We will be choosing some lucky ladies to participate in our first "before and after shoots", which will be lots of fun! The first one will be completely free of charge! H

i Rachel. You have only discovered art somewhat recently. Did you know you had such a talent? I studied art during my HSC and have always been a fairly creative person. I've maintained an interest in art and design, but painting is a newfound ability, and I'm most definitely a learner. What are your favourite mediums to use? I love texture and colour and have tried many different mediums. I paint mostly with my hands, as I find brushes at times a little uncooperative. I would say acrylic over Impasto would be my favourite way to paint, but I often add detail with pastels, watercolour, whatever works. I love textured effects, so I'm often guilty of borrowing household bits and pieces as creative tools. I'm also very interested in experimenting with some much larger scale canvas. How would you best describe your style of art? I would describe my style as exactly that ... mine. Some days I paint right-handed, some days left-handed, and mostly with my fingers. I often describe my work as scribbles, loose and somewhat abstract. I paint and draw the way I see things, and I'm extremely messy! What do you find most challenging about creating a new piece? I often just stand in front of a canvas and start with a colour. I don't usually sketch or plan out, so that can be challenging in itself. But, I love the fact that the canvas can then

I was classically trained for seven years and have been writing my own music since I was 12. I grew up listening to a mix of music from gospel choirs to pop, but my biggest musical influences growing up were Alicia Keys and Jewel. I loved Alicia for her piano playing and vocal runs, and Jewel for her art of storytelling through music. This inspired me to share my own stories.

It is through music, film, speaking books that I deliver them out into the world. Barney and I brought out our feature documentary in 2016, called You and Me, about our journey. We take the film to high schools around the country and finish with a Q&A and then a performance by me. We are both very passionate about inspiring the upcoming generations to find their inner strength and empower them to be authentic in their journey. We also wrote a book, The Essence of You and Me - a more in-depth invitation into the stories that make us who we are and brought us to this moment. After a pretty turbulent start to 2020, what goals are you ready to start kicking? Well, our turbulence actually started early 2019. What was supposed to be a routine surgery for Barney quickly turned into partial kidney failure, 12 major life saving surgeries and an entire year of being confined to a hospital bed both in hospital and at home. So, coming into 2020 we were already adjusted to this new way of life when lockdown hit. It has been nice to finally start getting out and about and back to living in the outside world again. My goals are all based around writing, recording and releasing music and to start performing again soon. I’m thinking I might even start doing some small intimate backyard shows - within the restrictions of course. So if anyone wants me, hit me up. For anyone who would love to purchase your music or listen to you, where can they do so? You can listen to my single, Capital Beautiful, on all digital streaming platforms. H

i Peter. Tell us about yourself and your connection to the Coffs Coast. I moved here permanently from Armidale in 1999. I had been coming to Sawtell since the early '70s and working down here during the frosty months of the Armidale winter. My parents built a holiday house in 1983, and it was a natural progression for me to make the move. Have you always worked in the golf industry? No, I did my carpentry apprenticeship in the family building business in 1976, and then became a licensed builder and then a partner in the family business. Golf has always been my passion, and I did always hope to find a way into the industry. I was very fortunate to get an opportunity to buy this business at the right price and the right time. Now, I'm thoroughly enjoying the ride. You recently took over the business and have made some big changes here. Tell us about these recent renos. I saw an opportunity to take this from a place where people just came to hit golf balls, to a place for family entertainment. We want everybody to feel comfortable at the Driving Range. In December last year we opened C.ex Coffs Coast Mini Golf, and this has made a terrific impact on the business and opened up a whole new market for us. Around the same time we also opened up our all weather short game facility. This is a 30 COFFS COAST

This is an area for our members to come and work on their short game, whether it be just putting, hitting a few chip or pitch shots, or even getting into the bunker to blast a few out. We want to make this a one stop shop for all your golfing needs, and having a short game area is a crucial part of that. We have two Trackman launch monitors to enable us to not only offer the highest level of teaching service, but also the most comprehensive club fitting service possible. We take pride in these services and have a commitment to our customers, to ensure that they leave with the correct product for them. We want to always be progressive and offer our clients as much exposure to technology as we can. Tell us about your team. We have two fully certified PGA members, Richie Gallichan and Andrew Campbell. Richie handles all day to day operations, as well as giving lessons and club fitting. Andrew also gives lessons and club fittings, and most importantly brings terrific energy to the place. Andrew and Richie are long time best friends, and between them they have changed the complexion of the place and have big plans for the future. But the real unsung hero is our other fulltimer, Tim Standing. Tim does all the jobs that nobody else wants to do and possesses an amazing work ethic. Every successful business has someone behind the scenes doing the jobs that customers may not directly see, but

make a big difference to the overall running of the place. We are very fortunate to have Tim on our team. You offer golf lessons, whether it be for putting, short game or long game. If you are looking to excel in your game, why is it important to have these professional lessons? Well, it's like anything in life; if you want to improve, you must seek guidance from people who know more than you. Our professionals are highly trained and both have played the game on different tours around the world, with Andrew still actively doing so. This credibility is crucial, and to have these two guys as available resources is a huge positive for our business. I can't stress the importance of getting high quality golf lessons, even for the accomplished golfer. The boys use Trackman radar technology, as well as a video camera during the lesson and perhaps most importantly, post lesson video analysis that is emailed to the client. This ensures the client experiences the highest quality lesson and has the feedback to take home and refine their swing. What would you say is the best thing about golf? I would have to say the handicap system. Golf is the only game where two friends of completely opposite ability levels can go out and compete with one another. The relationships forged through this shared love are often lifelong. Thanks Peter.

hen did you first become interested in cooking? I first became interested in cooking whilst still in school. I wasn’t really interested in school, so I decided to pursue a career in hospitality. My first job was as a kitchen hand here in Coffs Harbour, when I would finish school and then work in the kitchen until late at night. After realising I had an interest in kitchen operations and how they run, I applied for an apprenticeship at Bonville International Golf Resort. I completed my apprenticeship and then left Coffs Harbour to expand my knowledge base and see what Australia had to offer. I worked for a lot of large companies on the Gold Coast, such as the Marriott and other smaller operations such as Restaurant Barcelona on my days off. I spent quite a few years at the Marriott, before switching to Curran Cove located on Stradbroke Island, then after a number of years I moved to the Sheraton Mirage located in Port Douglas. Following this, I opened a successful restaurant, which operated for a number of years, then due to family commitments

Quick turnaround crops are the best place to start. Enjoying the reward of your home grown produce in a short amount of time can really motivate a first-time grower to keep growing! L

ucy, please tell us about your bespoke and delicious grazing boards - how was this idea born? I’ve always been the "snack enthusiast" in my family and social circles. I love creating plates to bring along to barbecues etc. My husband would hover over my shoulder asking, "Oooh, is this another ‘LucyBelle Board’?" It's a name he coined for my style years ago. Pretty soon, friends of friends were asking me to make boards for them. I did some training in food handling, and LucyBelle Boards was born. Have you found during COVID-19 that people have found these to be a great gift to send someone, or to celebrate a special occasion with? After the social distancing laws were introduced, I had all my weddings and event bookings cancel or postpone indefinitely, which was a little scary. So, I

thought I’d go for a different approach and create some "date night" boxes, for couples and families stuck at home on a Friday night. I was expecting maybe five or six bookings; the first night I made 28 boxes! Since then I’ve found more and more people "gifting" boxes to loved ones who can’t be together right now. I’ve even had orders placed from interstate. What are your most popular requests? Every grazing box, board or table comes with my hand finished sugar cookies. I think that’s what really sets my style apart. I always encourage people to think creatively when personalising their cookies. Personal jokes are the most popular - things you wouldn’t expect to read on a cookie are just hilarious! How can people find you? Where and how did you gain your knowledge in Australian broadcasting? I commenced my time at CHY at the young age of 11 and was on the air in a variety of roles for seven years. Costa BLUEBE RRIES

The Corindi farm here on the Coffs Coast is ONE OF THE OLDEST BLUEBERRY FARMS IN AUSTRALIA AND IS ONE OF THE REGION'S LARGEST EMPLOYERS. FOCUS caught up with horticultural manager Andrew Scheuer, to learn a little more about their farming practices.

H

i Andrew. Please introduce yourself and share your connection with the Coffs Coast. My name is Andrew Scheuer. I studied horticulture at Missouri State University, then grew fruit in Oregon for five years. I moved to Corindi Beach six years ago to work as a horticulturist at Costa. I have three little kids and like to garden and enjoy fishing and surfing with my family. You are the horticultural manager here at the Corindi Costa Berry Farm. What does your role involve? I lead a team of eight very talented horticulturists, who provide direction to the operations teams on how to grow the best crop. That involves how to water and fertilize the plants, controlling pests and disease, pruning and training the plants and how to best prepare for planting. hat’s something you’ve missed doing over the last few months? During the current restrictions there have been a lot of changes to the way we do things - how we do business, how we relax, and how we get together. One thing we’ve been lucky enough to continue doing on the Coffs Coast is getting out and about to unwind in nature and enjoy our wonderful wide open spaces. Walking and hiking trails have become a very important part of any destination for both visitors and locals. Here on the Coffs Coast we are lucky to be surrounded by a great variety of locations and environments that are perfect for short strolls, longer meanders, hikes in rainforests, or walks along the beach. And in case you’re unsure of where some of the best trails are, we’d love to share some of our favourites. The Solitary Islands Coastal Walk is a 60 km stretch between Sawtell in the south to Red Rock in the north, linking a string of idyllic golden beaches, rocky headlands, lush rainforest, and beachside villages along the Coffs Coast. You'll be hard-pressed to find a more beautiful walk on the east coast of NSW, and unlike many walks, you can dip in and out of this trail and do as little or as much as you want. The walk has numerous access points that are close to villages and towns along the coast. No matter if you want to complete the full walk over several days, or just take the kids for an hour-long stroll over a headland to meet the kangaroos, the Solitary Islands

uch has been written about independent schooling over the years, but for me, this discussion is fundamentally about freedom and choice. The discussion should not really be concerned with public vs. private. It should, however, focus on matching students’ needs and parental expectations with an individual school and, in my experience, the quality of a school is based on six key factors. Leadership - the vision, the drive and the personality of the leadership group are essential to making a school successful. One of the early American Presidents said it best: "If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader". This is the principal’s key role - to create this passion and to light the fire. Quality School Experience - this sounds obvious, but is often overlooked in the busyness of the day to day. A highquality schooling experience must be showcased throughout the school, from the classroom teaching practices to the telephone interactions with the office staff, and even the state of the buildings and grounds. Today, parents expect the schooling experience to also extend into the online world and to after school hours opportunities like camps, service clubs, performing arts, and sports. hat does your role involve? Being a trade qualified linesman and cable jointer, my team and I install and repair high powered electrical lines and underground power systems. Working on the Essential Energy network, we bring the power from the grid to our clients' properties; this may be a rural or residential subdivision, transformer upgrades, and street lighting. Due to the nature of the high-risk work, there is a strict process to ensure the work is completed safely and to the highest standard. This involves working with certified electrical plans, constructing the build to specified design standards, and working within a time frame on the network. Before the project is completed, many test procedures are required to be completed, such as transformer testing and cable testing. These testing procedures ensure the

equipment and installation meet regulated specifications. What is the best thing about your job? One of the best things about my job is the variety. One day I get to work in the mud, and the next anywhere between 12 to 18 metres up in the air. The job is also rewarding - building the project and seeing it through to the final connection and completion. Whilst I enjoy working locally, the job also takes the crew and I all over northern NSW, to some interesting places such as Lightning Ridge, Wee Waa, Mungindi, Boggabilla, Urbenville and Boggabri. What do you enjoy the most about working on the Coffs Coast? What’s not to enjoy about working here when you have beaches, mountain views and spectacular rainforests? The Coffs Coast is also a wonderful place for my family to grow up; there is a real sense of community and local support.

RLE ELECTRICAL & ENERGY What is your area of expertise? Reg Latter Electrical (RLE) has always provided a wide range of electrical and associated services, from same day hot water repairs to ongoing commercial maintenance and large-scale projects. We pride ourselves on our versatility and ability to deliver results to our clients. Over a decade ago, RLE branched out and became a Level 1 service provider in the Essential Energy area, constructing underground and overhead network power reticulation services for new

We also do new home mains power connections, street and park lighting, housing subdivisions, substation upgrades, pole and crossarm replacements and commercial projects. At present, RLE employs a dynamic team of local people, who all pride themselves on attention to detail combined with great customer service skills, enabling them to complete their work professionally and efficiently.

hat is your area of expertise? I’m the artistic director at the Coffs Conservatorium and a

professional violist. What is the best thing about your job? I love being able to offer music experiences to the local community. Whether it’s starting a youth orchestra, having a lesson with a Conservatorium teacher or offering a masterclass for our advanced students, I love being able to promote and encourage music education along the Coffs Coast. What makes your business stand out? The Coffs Conservatorium stands out by providing both exceptional music education classes and outstanding concert experiences. Our teachers are of the highest calibre, coming with years of experience, offering the best advice and education available on the coast. The annual Sunday Concert Series is the premiere concert series on the coast and sees some of the country’s best musicians visit Coffs Harbour and perform to sold out audiences at the Con.

What plans do you have for 2020/2021? Although we’ve had to postpone our events due to COVID-19, the Con has a number of exciting plans, including live stream concerts, workshops and masterclasses and collaborations with local performing arts companies. You have a family as well - how do you juggle it all? It’s always tricky trying to juggle a strong family life and the challenges and time commitment of work. My family always takes priority, and I’m lucky to live close to the Con, so I’m able to get home for lunch most days to see my wife and little boy for a little bit during the day. This helps take away the stresses of work and keeps me motivated to provide the best possible learning and musical experiences to the Coffs Coast. Share some expert advice with our readers? Don’t underestimate the value of music education! The experiences and learning advantages students have because of their music education has been proven to put them ahead at school, increase their quality of life, both young and old, and improve mental health and critical thinking.

and an à la carte menu Monday to Saturday nights. The bar offers a selection of local and imported beers and wine; guests can also enjoy an outdoor meal in the BBQ area. Let’s talk staff ... General Manager Justin Murphy first made contact with Key Employment, a Disability Employment service, in 2015. Kolin, Key Employment Consultant, and Justin have now been working closely for five years, placing and supporting several staff with disability into the business, from grounds keepers to administration and kitchen roles. Our business has also made place for local youth to complete and gain necessary work skills through work experience activities, all supported through Key Employment. Our vision is to continue to work with Kolin

and Key Employment for many more years to come. We feel proud that our business model provides opportunities for people with disability and believe every person should have access to the same training and opportunities in our local community. Do you have any success stories? Yes, one example that comes to mind is our employee Edward (Ted) Fitzgerald. Ted was placed through Key Employment and has been employed with us for over 12 months. He has proven himself to be an exceptional and valued employee by focusing on his work ethic and keenness to succeed every day; you just can’t buy that kind of dedication. Sometimes changes need to be made in the workplace for people with disability to perform a job. The Australian Government provides funding through the Employment Assistance Fund (EAF) to cover the costs of making these workplace changes. This can include buying equipment, modifications or accessing services for people with disability. Kolin, through Job Access, has been able to access the EAF to support Ted and our business with the purchase of a Hydraulic Bin Lift, Ride on Mower and Gutter Vacuum, to ensure his employment is sustainable for years to come. Would you consider hiring a person with disability through Key Employment again? Without a doubt! Key Employment has been instrumental in the initial support and ongoing development for many of our staff, and they listen to our business’s needs. Key Employment maintains regular contact to assist us with any of the little speed humps or hiccups we face - no issue too small or too big; they are here to guide us through. They have also been able to offer some very generous wage subsidies to assist offset some of the ongoing costs of employing staff. We at Country 2 Coast Motor Inn Coffs Harbour recommend Key Employment to any local business owners out there looking to diversify their staff with dedicated people, just like we have. Just call Steve on (02) 6691 9999, and he will assist you any way he can. Thanks Justin.

From musician to AWARDWINNING INTERIOR DESIGNER, Marcus Phillips’ innate creativity has been the guiding hand along his career.

Marcus PHILLIPS

Y

DESIGNER LIVING KITCHENS

ou started out as a musician; how did you become an interior designer? I’ve played in a number of bands since I was 15, so I pursued my love for music and went to Art School (Julian Ashtons, the Rocks, Sydney) as soon as I left high school. I continued studying music at the Academy of Guitar, Bondi, while working in the publicity department of the ABC. Eventually, through a series of events and natural job progression, I joined the team at Impala Kitchens in Sydney. I worked my way up to become their head designer and moved to Brisbane for the job. While there, I enrolled in interior design and completed the advanced level in the ‘90s. What do you think makes your work stand out? Good training in balance, aesthetics, proportion,

function, colour and product knowledge is an advantage. I like to design in a clean, isomorphic simplicity that allows the whole kitchen to be a feature, rather than having a feature that stands out to the extent that it’s too strong in its relation to the whole. What interior design rule do you like to follow or break? I like breaking the "Work Triangle". This term was invented by a German kitchen hardware company to flog products. When I was holding kitchen design seminars, I called it the "Work Tangle", because clients would trip over themselves trying to figure out how to achieve it. At the end of the day, there are so many other factors involved in creating a functional and great working kitchen - clients shouldn’t have to worry about these concepts.

ey Tash. You have recently taken on a trade that is often overlooked by women - metal fabrication. What first sparked your interest to work in the metal industry? Throughout high school I enjoyed metalwork, and I think there are so many interesting things you can do using metal. I enjoy shaping and forming blank metal into something functional. You are the first female metal fabricator to work at Faircloth and Reynolds. Why do you think this industry is so male oriented? Because some women might feel uncomfortable being in a male dominated industry - thinking they might not be given an opportunity, because it is not an industry many women get into. I also think that being an apprentice can be scary, especially at a mature age, because I had only done it’s like starting from metal work when I the bottom again was at high school, in the workforce. What advice would you give other women thinking of getting into a trade like yours, or trying a career that might be a little different from the norm? Do not be afraid to try something that you want to do, even if it is something women don’t normally choose to do. You can certainly prove to anyone you can do anything. IF THERE WAS EVER A TIME WE ALL NEEDED SOME MENTAL THERAPY AND SUPPORT, IT WOULD BE NOW. We spoke with Angie Laussel and Rowena Bianchino from the Harbour Therapy Clinic, as we wanted to find out more at this relevant time.

H

i Angie and Rowena. Can you please tell us more about the Harbour Therapy Clinic and what services you provide there? Harbour Therapy Clinic is a well-respected local service, that has been based down at the Jetty for many years now. We believe that looking after your mental and emotional health is just as important as looking after your physical health, and with us, you can do it all. We offer an integrated approach to mental health and wellbeing, where people can come and replenish both mind and body - we have psychotherapy, relationship counselling, courses in mindfulness, counselling and psychology, art and play therapies, plus massage, nutrition and yoga. Our program offers employers a practical way of supporting their staff through tricky times: and unlike the national providers, we understand local issues, can be timely and responsive, and importantly, we tailor our services to the needs of both small business and large organisations. Have you found your services are in demand, as 2020 has been a stressful time for everyone? 2020 has been a difficult time for many people in our local communities - we’ve had bushfires, floods, and then of course, the Coronavirus. These events have been taking their toll in many ways: individuals grappling with fear, anxiety, low mood or depression; couples struggling with the extra pressure on their relationship; children feeling overwhelmed,

frightened, unsure and frustrated; and businesses that are worried about their staff wellbeing, as well as their own capacity to survive. As a registered NDIS provider, we’ve also had clients experience extra anxiety and loneliness as a result of social isolation. Our team has grown to help meet the need in our community, and we are pleased that people feel they can reach out for help. Now more than ever, we need to look after all aspects of our health and wellbeing. What advice would you give our readers when they may be wondering if they would benefit from your therapies? What types of symptoms would someone exhibit that could worry them? People feel uncertain about the future right now and may find themselves wondering whether it might help to talk with a professional therapist about their concerns, feelings of sadness, or that something in their lives is feeling “just not quite right”. Many of our clients felt the same way before they came to Harbour Therapy Clinic, and discovering they don’t always have to face things alone has helped them make the changes they were hoping for. There are some things in our lives we want to share with another, but would prefer to do in a neutral and confidential space. Anyone who has noticed their thoughts

are going around as if on a hamster wheel, whose sleeping or eating patterns have changed, who might be getting pains in the tummy from worry, and just seeming more agitated than usual - or the opposite of this, feeling numb a lot of the time, with little interest in the things they used to do - these are all signs it would be helpful to reach out. Couples have also been under a lot of strain with social isolation, and this has been a pressure cooker for old resentments and past hurts. Communicating with your partner about these things is not always easy and left unsaid, tend to fester and create distance. It is so much easier to share these difficult emotions with the guidance of an experienced counsellor, and we encourage people to consider relationship counselling earlier rather than later. We also assist people in relationships to regain the intimacy and connection that might have got lost in the busyness of life. Harbour Therapy Clinic has a diverse team and as the region’s leading inclusive relationship and family counselling service, we’ve worked alongside many couples to help them build a stronger relationship foundation, so they can come through this time intact. How can we get in touch? Call us directly on 6652 1120 or send us an email to enquiries@harbourtherapyclinic.com.au Thanks ladies.

ell us a little about yourself. After completing my Masters of Physiotherapy at the University of Sydney and working in a range of different roles in Sydney, I made the move to Coffs a couple of years ago. Before working as a physio, I completed a Bachelor of Psychological Science, served in the Defence Force and worked in international medical assistance. What do you commonly see with athletes you’ve coached or treated? Just because you're active doesn't mean you just have to accept having a sore back or aching knees and shoulders. People are often reluctant to seek help, because they worry they will be told the only way to get better is

to stop training or stop competing in the sport they love. As a physio, I consider keeping you active and regularly training as vital to your treatment. I can help you, and will work with your coaches or trainers, to adapt your training to keep you progressing while you overcome any obstacles. Does that mean you only work with athletes? Not at all! Physiotherapy can be beneficial to everybody, and for some people the demands of their job are just as taxing as a sport! My goal is to help you understand any physical challenges you may have and empower you to overcome them. Whether that is recovering after joint replacement surgery or treating long term back pain, I will work with you to reach your goals. Thanks Julian.

The welfare of animals is intrinsically linked to that of us humans. THE VOLUNTEERS HERE AT RSPCA COFFS HARBOUR PLAY A CRUCIAL ROLE IN HELPING KEEP OUR ANIMALS SAFE, WITH THE ULTIMATE GOAL OF MATCHING FAMILIES WITH THEIR NEW PET. H

i Kate. Please introduce yourself and share your connection to the Coffs Coast. My name is Kate Conaghan; I'm the shelter trainer at Coffs Harbour RSPCA. I have a Certificate IV in Companion Animal Services through the Delta Institute and a Post Graduate Diploma in Psychology through SCU. I've been working with RSPCA Coffs for the last couple of years, but I've worked in the animal industry most of my life. I live on 100 acres just north of Coffs. My family and I moved from Brisbane as a lifestyle choice nine years ago. I love the shelter in Coffs Harbour the green space, the birds, the sea breeze. It's good for the soul. I love that the Coffs coast has so much beauty to explore, not just the beach, but forest and country side all doable in a day! Tell us a little bit about your role here at Coffs Harbour RSPCA animal shelter. RSPCA

and I put in place the behaviour plans and rehabilitation plans to meet the behavioural needs for our animals while they are in care. During the recent months, many people decided it would be a great time to adopt a pet. How many pets were adopted out of Coffs Harbour? From the 2nd April 2020 through to the 14th June 2020, Coffs Harbour shelter successfully adopted out a total of 75 animals - 21 canines, 44 felines, seven livestock and three others. Our statewide stats shows our adoption rates throughout the year have increased 4%. It is heart-warming to see Australians turn to animal companionship during these unprecedented times. We were happy to be able to find homes for animals in need, given the challenges surrounding the global pandemic with our "Adopt from Home"

campaign. Although the process may have changed, our commitment to finding the right homes for the right animals did not, and we still vetted applications through a number of measures, including online application forms, phone and video calls, and meeting the prospective buyers at their residence. What process is involved for anyone considering adopting a pet? A successful adoption is about matching the needs of the family adopting with the needs of the animal, and giving the family skills and information they may need to ensure success in the home. Usually this is done by having a detailed chat about the animal and what the family is looking for in a pet, and then arranging an opportunity for the animal and family to meet. If they are looking at adopting a dog and they already have a dog, then we

look like. It also helps us teach animals about going for walks, having quality people time and learning basic skills that will assist them in the home. Foster care is the same. Sometimes foster care provides us essential information that we may not be able to gain in the shelter alone. This can give us amazing feedback on how an animal fits into a home environment and again, helps us form a picture of the type of home that animal might best be suited to. Sometimes, just having some time off from being in the shelter is nice too. What after care and communications does the RSPCA offer people who adopt or foster an animal? We are always here to help, and we love to see the progress of our animals in their new homes. Sometimes settling an animal in a new home can be difficult; after all, for people, we know that moving house is one of the most stressful things you can do! It's not always that different for our animals. Hopefully we have addressed most of the possible difficulties and best management options at the time of adoption, but sometimes surprises come up, and we are always available Seeing people and to talk through animals work together difficulties with and learn about each other is settling in. always my greatest joy. COVID-19? Most animals (including people) don't deal well with sudden change, so where possible, making a plan for your return to work is the key to success. This might mean building a little independence by having your animal spend some time outdoors or in an area where you are not present for a small amount of time throughout the day. Where possible, make a plan for how your animal is going to spend their day now that you aren't able to fill it with outings and pats! You might hide their food around the house or yard, or leave them an old blanket or jumper that smells like you. Leaving the TV or radio on can be helpful also. Considering the enrichment plans you are going to use to help your pet stay stimulated while they are at home alone is really important and of course, keep finding time to have some quality time together every day! Your volunteers are the reason that RSPCA is able to do what they do. Their dedication to help day in and day out sees thousands of animals get the care, love and protection they need. What is the most rewarding part of your role? Seeing people and animals work together and learn about each other is always my greatest joy. We don't always speak the same language, but when our minds are open and we really think about the animals' experience, this is when true connection can occur. Whether it is a new family adopting, a staff member or a volunteer or a foster parent, these are the moments that make me smile. RSPCA NSW is a non-government organisation. As a charity, you receive less than two per cent in regular funding from the NSW Government and zero percent from the Federal Government. For anyone who would like to donate or volunteer their time, how can they do so? The best place to start is at the RSPCA NSW website. This will give you all the information about the many programs we offer and how you might like to help out. If you don't have access to the internet easily, then contact your local shelter and have a chat about their needs. If time is scarce for you, then just pop in for a visit sometime and feed some treats to our animals and help us spread the word in the community. Thanks Kate. COFFS COAST

ou've had a fulfilling career before the Butterfly House. Can you share some highlights? I qualified as a veterinarian with a special interest in dolphins. I spent eight years working abroad with river dolphins in Cambodia and South America, whilst undertaking two Masters degrees, and I’m currently completing my PhD in dolphin epidemiology. I’ve been the veterinarian for Sea Shepherd for nine years and started a charity. Plus, I was a soletrader for my own veterinary locum business for nearly 10 years, giving me the financial freedom to follow my dreams. What brought you to the Coffs Coast? I first came to Coffs in September 2001 for work experience, while studying veterinary science at the University of Melbourne. I spent two weeks at the Pet Porpoise Pool, where I met my husband Troy, the manager at the time. I returned yearly to volunteer for the following five years, before leaving to go to live in Cambodia. You've made awesome additions to the Butterfly House since you’ve owned it. North Coast V-Twins has been LOCALLY OWNED AND OPERATED BY THE BEATON FAMILY FOR THE PAST THREE DECADES. On the 4th July, they opened the doors at their new location. We had a chat to Ashley Beaton, to find out more …

T W INS

H

ow did the North Coast V-Twins story begin? With a passion for motorcycling ... A love for everything with an engine. In 1980, my wife and I opened a small appliance sales, repairs and service store, Beaton’s Home Appliances, at 44 Marcia Street, Coffs Harbour. At that stage it was mostly appliance repairs, but my Ducati Darmah was never far away. I was known to do most of my own repairs on my bike and also a few jobs on other mates Ducatis, as not too many local motorcycle stores were interested in working on Ducatis back then. Then in 1989 Fraser's Motorcycles, the importer for Ducati at the time, approached us to take on the franchise. What started as North Coast 84 COFFS COAST

Ducati evolved into North Coast V-Twins when Harley-Davidson joined us in 1996. When did motorcycles become a part of your life? From a very young age I was told of my father's, Norm’s, exploits on a range of English motorcycles at local shows. Dad was part owner of a Holden Dealership in Gloucester, which sold various other products back then, such as Honda, Stihl, Victa, and there was usually a trade-in motorcycle I could practice on after school. I was never able to emulate my father’s talent on one, though. When I was a teenager, I remember leaving our local picture theatre in Gloucester, and one of the local lads had his new Ducati 750GT parked at the front doors of the theatre. As my friends and I were leaving, the GT burst into life, with both booming

Conti mufflers shooting their magnificent note straight up the stairs to where we were standing, leaving an impression on my soul only a musician would understand. Back then V-Twin motorcycles, particularly Ducati, did not have a good reputation for reliability and weren’t a popular choice of bike. I was riding a CB 500 /4 at the time, but I knew after that moment that one day I would have one of these impressive machines. Little did anyone, especially me, believe that first impression would grow into the incredible business we have today, North Coast V-Twins. It wasn’t for about another six years after that until I was able to get my first Ducati, but the 1978 900SD Darmah was my pride and joy back then - and still is to this day. How long have you been living in the Coffs community? We moved from Gloucester in 1979. We didn’t know where we were going to end up; we just packed up and headed north. Once I got to Coffs Harbour, I ended up taking a job doing appliance The local trades we great visibility from repairs for a local had on board really the highway, with company. The local trades we had on board really went above and beyond to do what needed to be done; their workmanship is really on show here. My son, Beau worked closely with us on the electrical, technical and aircon on side of things, which was a mammoth task. We had a lot of expectations to manage throughout the fit out too. Harley-Davidson like to do things their way, and Ducati like things done another way - and so do KTM, but from all reports, we have ticked all their boxes. The feedback and response has been all very positive and truly amazing. You can see people’s minds are blown from the moment they walk in. It is such a huge space; everything in there is big, and it has come together better than I could have ever imagined. >>> COFFS COAST

North Coast V-Twins is not the only one ... tell us how Coffs KTM and Port City HarleyDavidson came about ... Good things come in threes, right? North Coast V-Twins was the beginning of the beast, then in 2011 we opened Coffs KTM. We found the demand for Harleys was seeing us do more and more business in the Port Macquarie and Taree region, so in 2015 it became an obvious move to open up Port City Harley-Davidson, our solo Harley-Davidson store on Lake Road in Port Macquarie. The experience of the team that heads our stores is second to none. Ben Middlemiss has been a long-time family friend of ours, and he is the brains on the front line of Coffs KTM. Garth McIntosh has been with the V-Twins team for over twenty years and moved down to Port Macquarie to work with Karissa on opening PCHD, and now he is our general manager. Ian Carrett is my right-hand man at North Coast V-Twins; he has also been with us for twenty plus years. These guys, along with the rest of the team, are the best in their field. Nothing would be possible without these sort of team players backing me up, day in, day out. How important is staff training? I have always heavily promoted and invested in staff training; what you put in, you get out. Harley-Davidson even have their own university, with online courses and regular teacher led programs held in Sydney. We have always been supporters and believers in the apprentice and trainee programs; we have sponsored the annual Norm Beaton Automotive Apprentice of the Year Award since 1999, and we have seen some great talent come out of that. The award is in honour of my father, who sadly isn’t here today to know just how much of an influence he has had on my work ethics and values as a person. 86 COFFS COAST

You’re a family operated business. Have the original values and goals remained with growth? Most certainly. Our core values remain the same: fairness and honesty, with a dynamic team delivering quality service and knowledge. To have a team who are all passionate about motorcycling and the industry makes our goals easy to achieve. We all live and breathe motorcycles; if we aren’t working on bikes, we’re out riding them. We are renowned for our customer service; it is our competitive edge. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" is instilled in our team of staff. How important is customer service in your industry? We have built our business on quality customer service. We pride ourselves on it. At the end of the day, the service is the one thing that can set you apart from any other motorcycle store. The customer has so many options; they can buy online now, they can easily find another dealer, but we like to think we have a place you

want to come, staff you want to see, and the experience and knowledge about what we’re selling. What part of the business are you most proud of? What we have built. What North Coast V-Twins is today - this is the dream. But what really makes us proud is the people involved: our family, staff, customers, friends, and community. They are the people who have contributed to the making of what North Coast V-Twins is today. They are what make it all worthwhile. Tell us about the brands you stock. We are the home to the iconic US brand Harley-Davidson®, and the famous Italian motorcycle Ducati, and now we’ve add the Austrian-made KTM to the all-star lineup - three of the leading prestige motorcycles in the world under one roof. I am not sure if there is any other dealership in the world that can hold that claim to fame but if we are not the only one, then we are one of very few. In my opinion, these three brands all bring their own bragging

rights to the table and complement each other nicely under the one roof. I mean, who wouldn’t want one of each of them in their shed, right? It’s a "best of" kind of set up. Aside from bikes, what else do you stock? At one point during the move, I wondered how we were going to fit the bikes in; the range of riding gear and merchandise we have was filling up the space before we got the bikes in. Karissa spent a lot of time on working through what brands we wanted to carry, making sure there would be something for everyone, no matter what you ride or your budget. So, aside from the genuine gear from Harley-Davidson, Ducati and KTM, we also are proud stockists of Dianese, Shoei, Arai, AGV, Shark, Airoh, RXT, Eldorado, RST, Merlin, RJays, DriRider, Moto Dry, Wiley X, Ugly Fish, Resurgence and Bullit Jeans, Cardo, Sena, TCX, Alpinestars, Five, Kryptonite, just to name a few. It’s been a big effort to get North Coast

V-Twins to where it is today; whom do you want to thank? My family, first and foremost; that’s where it all began. My wife, Jill, has stood by me through thick and thin, and let’s be honest most people our age should be retiring! Instead, we’re going bigger and becoming busier than ever. I wouldn’t have it any other way; I love what I do, so it’s really not work for me. My children, Richelle, Tonya, Karissa and Beau; they’ve all been involved in the businesses over the years. Karissa has worked with me for 20 years and somehow survived. Karissa has been the driving force behind this move, the design, and the fit out; it would not be what it is without her. My son, Beau, has given us a lot of his time and knowledge during the fit out, and it has been great to have him involved. Tonya has always supported us and given us her time and input on design elements and the finer fit out details. I am grateful for the talented crew of staff we have and find great honour in having people who have worked with us since the early days. We could not have succeeded without their

support, willingness, and knowledge. Our community, customers, the local trades, and businesses and all our friends; what we have achieved, where we are at, you have all helped us get here - so thank you. We are beyond excited to be able to share the all new North Coast V-Twins with our local community and those from afar. We have worked tirelessly on making sure this was more than just a motorcycle shop. We have made it a destination, your new hangout, and if you buy a bike while you’re in here - then that’s a bonus. I would like to close by saying that the thing Jill and I are most proud of is our children. I have a deep respect and gratitude for them and what they do for us; they have always and still do mean the world to us. Followed by our team of staff; I believe Jill and I have instilled a great set of moral fibre within, and we all have the same goals to keep our quality, honest, fair customer service strong and at the forefront of our businesses. WORLD EXPEDITIONS

with SAM WARDMAN

H

ow did you come to call the beautiful Coffs Coast home? Our family was one of the first Punjabis to arrive in Australia, and my maternal great grandfather settled along West Korora road in the late 1930s. I was born in the old Coffs Base Hospital. I spent nearly 10 years overseas, managing the World Expeditions office in San Francisco (where I met my wife, Tara) and London (where my first born, Amaia, was born). Once Amaia came along, we decided we’d return, so she could be surrounded by family and enjoy the simple natural pleasures that I did as a child. You’re based remotely in your role at World Expeditions. What does it entail, and what services do they provide? Working from home, for me, is no different to working in an office. I connect with people online or by phone, so it doesn’t really matter where I am. I actually find it more distracting in the office and while the kids might pop in from time to time at home, it’s a welcome distraction and I feel blessed that I have been able to see more of them growing up. As Marketing Director, I pretty much dip my hands into most of the brands at the World Expeditions Travel Group (12 and counting!), but my main focus is on the parent company, World Expeditions. We are very hands on and prefer to build in-house knowledge, so my day could go from digital marketing (advertising to content creation to SEO), making new websites, liaising on projects with tourist offices or promotional partners, checking budgets, mentoring junior staff in Australia and our international offices, liaising with PR or design,

analysing metrics, or planning new strategies for the various brands. What has been a standout for you so far? We were the first Australian company to offer trekking in Nepal in 1975, so we’ve attracted many adventure legends over the years, which have opened doors. I worked closely with Sir Edmund Hillary’s son, Peter, on a series of treks to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first ascent of Mt Everest. When Sir Ed sadly passed, Peter invited me to his father’s memorial at Windsor Castle, hosted by the Queen. It’s the many unique experiences like this that the role has provided that has made it easy to stay motivated through the mundane. World Expeditions offer some pretty unique travel and adventure experiences. What are your tops picks for Australian-based travel? Our six-day Larapinta Trek in Comfort in the Red Centre is our most popular walk. We have developed semi-permanent eco-camps along the trail to add more comfort, which have won us three awards. While Tasmania has a bunch of classic walks, like the Overland Track, Walls of Jerusalem and South Coast Track, our multiactivity trip Cycle, Kayak and Walk trip from Launceston to Hobart is a cracker. My personal all-time favourite is the Franklin River Rafting expedition. There is so much history attached to that river, and this is true wilderness adventure. You carry everything in and out (including human waste!), sleep under a cave overhang, see Aboriginal art you’ll never see any other way, and drink water straight from the river. It’s not a thrills and spills trip; most reasonably fit people can do it.

What marketing channels do you find the most successful and why? They all have their place, but digital is perhaps winning out, because it can be hyper-targeted, cheap, and easily measured. Remarketing to those who show an interest and creating automations to deliver the right content to the right person at the right time is critical for companies with a large product range. There’s a reason Dan Murphy’s always asks if you’re a member! For smaller businesses, my suggestion would be to really pay attention to their earned (reviews) and owned (databases) channels. It’s cheap and easier than you think. Don’t be bamboozled. Strategies online are the same offline; it’s just a different method of delivery. COVID-19 must have impacted the business significantly. How has the organisation and team handled it? It’s always been the case for us that each week there seems to be a different part of the world that presents some challenge to operate a trip as advertised. But I never thought I would see the day that the whole world would have a travel warning placed on it - it’s a story for the grand babies! Thanks to a well-established Australian program and domestic operations in each country we have an office, we’re better placed than many others, but time will tell. A month into lockdown we offered a $0 deposit on trips, and that brought in 400 bookings in two weeks. Demand is there; we just need access to the wilderness, and fingers crossed things settle down and borders stay open. We’ve completed COVID Clean risk management plans in every state we operate. Thanks Brad.

Modern Awards and underpayment: A legal minefield

U

nderpayment of employees is a significant issue in Australia. It has recently made headlines in the news, from Woolworths’ $400m underpayment of its salaried employees to celebrity chef George Calombaris underpaying his restaurant workers by a whopping $7.8m. While there are some brazen examples of employers intentionally underpaying vulnerable employees (remember the 7-Eleven wage theft cases?), many experts consider that the vast majority of underpayments in Australia arise unintentionally. This is often due to the complexity of the Modern Awards system. Admittedly, it can be difficult for employers to determine which of the 122 Modern Awards apply to their employees and sometimes, multiple awards apply. It can be even more difficult to determine a particular employee’s classification within that award; an employee’s classification can depend on the duties she or he performs, as well as their underlying skills and competence. Nonetheless, employers have an ongoing obligation to ensure the correct allowances, penalties, loadings and overtime are paid to their employees, taking into account the innumerable rules in the award and the law in general, as well as the exceptions to those rules. In my experience, many employers attempt to bypass this

administrative burden by paying employees a flat annual rate that accounts for all allowances, penalties, loadings and to a certain extent, overtime. This is commonly known as an annualised wage. However, annualised wages do not come without risk. From 1st March this year, employers are required to perform an audit of any annualised wage at least every 12 months. This means employers must maintain records of starting, finishing and break times of each employee, then compare the annual wage to what the employee would have been paid under the award, to ensure all minimum entitlements are met. Employers should be aware that, in addition to having to pay back any underpayments to affected employees, interest and penalties may be imposed. In 2017, the maximum penalties payable dramatically increased, and the Attorney General is now considering imposing even harsher penalties, including possible criminal sanctions. FATHER

MICHAEL ZIPPY AND

Starting out with a career in teaching, Michael Alcock always felt like something was missing. It was a calling that niggled for many years and when he made the decision to dedicate his life to the church, he never looked back. Father Michael presents services each week and offers a lovely alternative service to the norm - all with his whippet right by his side.

H

i Father Michael. Please introduce yourself and share your connection with the Coffs Coast. The Bishop of Lismore rang me, just over five years ago, and asked if I would like to look after Mary Help of Christians Parish in Sawtell on a temporary basis. At that time I was loving being the Parish Priest of the Nambucca Valley Parish (NVP) which includes Macksville, Nambucca Heads, Bowraville and Taylors Arm (famous for the “Pub with No Beer”). It’s funny, you know! I remember wondering what the future held for me, as my six year term in the NVP was coming to an end. Apply for another six year term? Take long service leave? Apply for another Parish? But as always, the Lord works in mysterious ways, and I ended up in “Sunny Sawtell” with very little notice. 94 COFFS COAST

Catholic Church, can you explain what your role is? Just to clarify: because of the temporary nature of my appointment here in Sawtell, I am officially an Administrator and not Parish Priest. Having said that, however, the roles are basically the same. Which is, as I understand it, to be an authentic witness of God’s love. I do this with all my giftedness, while also acknowledging my human frailty, weakness and sinfulness. This plays out on a daily basis by me: presiding at weekend and daily masses, which take place in our newly refurbished church in Sawtell or in our beautiful chapel at Sawtell Catholic Care; celebrating marriages, funerals and baptisms; visiting the sick at home and in hospital; visiting the Mary Help of Christians Parish Primary School; being available to people who may need a “God” person to talk to. You have a bit of an alternative method of worship, and you also have a sidekick. Tell us about Zippy the whippet and how you two became a pair. Our family did not have a dog when I was growing up in Murwillumbah, which might explain why I was never a big “dog” person. It was suggested to me, when I started living by myself for the first time ever (in Nambucca Heads), that a dog may be a good companion. I did not like the idea at first, as I thought it would restrict my annual overseas “Board Meetings” (yes, that’s right - we get four weeks' holiday each year). I did, however, warm to the idea, and when Sue from Dorrigo had one whippet puppy left to sell, I snapped him up. Zippy arrived in Sawtell one month after me, and we have been inseparable ever since. When we got home, I set Zippy up with his bed in the undercover area outside, as that is where dogs are supposed to be, right? I mean, I had no idea. The only way I could stop him whimpering that night was to let him inside, and he hasn’t left my side since.

He has me very well why? I understand that trained! ne of our very first group of Marian Grove New Release residents shared her feelings about moving into her new

home. Peggy was looking for almost two years before she found out about the New Release, back when it was still a building project. “I think being on my own, after a couple of falls and having two acres to look after made me think about things,” she said. “I wanted to find somewhere where I didn’t have to worry about maintenance, or mowing the lawns; I wanted somewhere I could just shut up the place and go. “I looked at Woolgoolga, and Urunga, but then this place came up and I thought, 'That’s exactly what I want - somewhere close to everything, the airport, the hospital, the beach' ... that was the best thing about it. That’s why I decided to come and have a look.” When she saw the location and the plans, Peggy was even more excited. “I wanted somewhere I could be up and have a view, and have a brand new place; it really appealed to me. I thought this could be my home until I get old!” Peggy says she is independent and likes to do things her own way. “Your kids have their own lives, but here 108 COFFS COAST

That’s exactly what I want somewhere close to everything, the airport, the hospital, the beach ... that was the best thing about it. That’s why I decided to come and have a look.

I’m close enough to them to walk and see them, walk to watch them play soccer and just come back and be comfortable in my own home, or have them over to visit me.” So what about that move? “Oh, there were plenty of things going on,” she says, “but I had all the help I needed to get organised. It was marvellous customer service; Michelle was there with me every step of the way, answering every question and making it all as smooth as possible.” Now that she’s settled, Peggy has no regrets. “l’ll be honest; I did have a moment where I thought, 'Have I done the right thing',“ she says. “I mean, coming from two acres, with a house with a wood fire and all the animals and the space, it does make you wonder. But then I remember the first night I was here; I just kept finding more and more cupboards to put things away in - it was like Christmas! "My sister came to visit, and she couldn’t believe it. 'It’s just so homely,' she kept saying, 'look at the bathroom and the kitchen; I can see why you felt the way you do'. It’s like a brand new start for me.”

Peggy looks forward to the time when COVID restrictions ease and she can travel again, but for now she’s got plenty to keep her busy. “Oh, I love it. There’s the gym downstairs if you want to use that, but there are all the walks, I can walk down to the Grove Café and meet a friend, the wetland walk which I haven’t done yet - but I plan to soon. Everything I need is here!” Thank you, Peggy, for sharing your Marian Grove New Release story with us; welcome home!

BROOKLANA

t blows me away still that after nearly 30 years of exploring on the Coffs Coast, there’s still "stuff" out there to be found. Generally when we go for an explore up in the hinterland past Ulong, we head towards Nymbodia and cross the stunning Bobo River. It's a low level bridge just wide enough for one car and if you look upstream, you’ll see the amazing Brooklana Siding bridge. This beautiful and stunning steel trestle bridge has survived many years of weathering and use when old steam trains used to run along the Glenreagh - Dorrigo rail line. It's a nice spot to stop, stretch the legs, and admire the bridge, rail line and a few other relics. But the other day a good mate (Tommo from Coffs Coast 4x4 Bush Adventures) wanted to show me one of his new finds. Located within a stone's throw of the bridge

is an ageing steam boiler. Now, what gets me is that we go to this spot constantly to explore and have never seen such a magnificent piece of machinery. The area is extremely thick with privet and other trees and is very hard to see. Some 50 feet away is an array of steel wheels, cranks and other paraphernalia used when there was a sawmill here. Not on any maps or documented is that there is a little loop service line here, where timber was processed then loaded for the run down the mountain for export. It was the Brooklana Timber Company that was the main player out here for many years, and throughout this area there were several narrow gauge timber rail tracks where horses pulled the carriages to the main lines for loading; plus, they were used to drag logs from the forest to the sawmill. Brooklana "station" had a short wooden platform and

was used to load and unload passengers plus goods. It's still possible to find the old Brooklana sign made of thick concrete (I’ve heard rumours it was made in the USA), line switching levers and a few other relics. Good to see these things have lasted 51 years, without being damaged. What gets me is just how the old timers got these juggernauts in place with such precision and generally without damage, and that’s after communication was sent back to a manufacturer with an order, then there was the logistics getting the machinery to these remote locations. While we are finding more and more relics in the bush these days, finding the right information is like putting a puzzle together, due to a lot of mis-interpretation, no records, and realistically a lot of the workers and families of the time have passed away.
