Christina Monneron discovered her passion for Afro-Cuban rhythms while working as a Pharmacologist in Sweden. This led her on an incredible journey of self discovery through a deep connection to the spirituality of Cuba. After almost a year in Cuba, Christina returned home to Australia and is introducing the sensuality of the rhythms of Cuba to the people of the Coffs Coast.

o you remember being ing a rom an performer/dancer from early age, or is this something fe? that came later in life?

I have loved to dance all my life and used to make up my own dance moves when I was young, but I danced mainly for myself and got shy when people were looking. I remember after starting ballet at 8 years of age, my dad always wanting to put me on show to all his friends and the family at parties, but I felt incredibly uncomfortable being in the limelight!

Most people don’t believe me when I say I was shy most of my school years! I ‘broke the shyness’ briefly for a year when I enrolled in Year 11 drama upon our family’s move from Perth to Melbourne, where I thought no-one knew me as shy, but I was so nervous performing! I guess that broke the pattern somewhat, and I started to feel more at ease on a stage since!

You’re actually a medical scientist by trade, so how did you discover that dancing was your true passion?

Throughout my degree and scientific career, I tried different forms of dance, like Jazz Ballet and Ballroom, but when I discovered AfroCuban dance while working in Sweden, that was when I felt truly present in my body with that particular dance style.

I then wanted to take on board as much as possible, to learn all there was to learn about it.

I went on an exchange to Cuba in 1998 to learn from masters, brought it back to Australia to start teaching, and eventually took the risk and left the science life completely in 2003!

I felt my true passion was Afro-Cuban dance and wanted to embrace it fully and share it with as many people as I could, which in gratitude I did through pioneering the successful ‘Cuban Dance Academy’ in Melbourne for 10 years!

It was the sultry sounds of Afro-Cuban rhythms that got you hooked. What’s so enticing about Cuban dance in particular?

It’s the connection to the roots, coming from Africa, the rhythm of the earth and the rhythm 4 coffs coast focus.

Yes, we are very excited to be hosting international Bachata instructor Carlos Cinta from the USA on Saturday 25 August at Nambucca RSL. He will be teaching us the rhythm and roots of a Dominican Republic dance style called Bachata (whose roots are also in Cuban music). He is a fun teacher with a great sense of humour which puts everyone at ease, and he specialises in the very funky form of Caribbean Bachata.

The workshops are followed by a dance party for all to practice their moves, dance and have fun!

This month’s guest is David Manuel, a self confessed film

collectors corner enthusiast whose earliest memories of cinema and film Bruce Thomas were sitting in the projection room of the Coffs Harbour drivein theatre as a child. From there, his love of all things cinema developed, and he now boasts an impressive collection of film memorabilia, including a home cinema!

hat do you collect?

I collect cinema memorabilia such as projectors, films (8 mm super 8, 9.5 mm, 16 mm, 35 mm) cinema posters both new and old, autographed photographs of stars now and yesteryear, glass slides, lobby cards, movie programmes, movie cameras, movie props and drive-in speakers.

How long have you been collecting for?

I have been collecting for twenty years.

What prompted you to start collecting, and why film memorabilia?

My collection began when I gained employment in the position of projectionist at Birch Carroll and Coyle cinemas. This encouraged my vast interest in anything to do with the movies.

Do you remember the first piece that started your collection?

The first piece that started my collection was a Kodak standard 8 mm 1928 projector.

Tell us about the cinema setup you have at home to house your collection?

We have built a home cinema, including a projection room with port holes, full sized 6 coffs coast focus.

movie screen, theatre carpet, cinema seats, 1950s cinema wall paper, original theatre surround sound system, framed original movie posters and display cabinets.

This has created the atmosphere and the magic of the movies. On movie nights, original ticket passes are given.

Where do you find all your memorabilia, and is it hard to source?

Memorabilia is sourced from other movie enthusiasts, antique shops such as good friend Ludo from Ludo’s Old Wares, the internet and word of mouth. Some items can be difficult to source, but some items find me!

Is your collection still growing?

My collection is still growing, but I am more selective now.

Do you have one favourite piece in your collection?

My favourite piece is a 1948 full size 35 mm projector with carbon arc lamp house from the former Urunga Picture Theatre, which I fully restored to its former glory.

What makes your collection so unique?

The collection is unique due to the vast variety of memorabilia, and it’s set up like a museum.

Having over 120 projectors and numerous

posters, both new and old.

Vinyl theatre banners also add to the uniqueness. Historical films of Coffs Harbour are always of great interest to Coffs Harbour locals, such as former Tasma Theatre programmes.

Some off my memorabilia is rare and highly sought after.

Films that range from 1930s to now, including silent movies, black and white, musicals, westerns, comedies, dramas and actions.

Are you a member of any collectors and or enthusiasts clubs?

I am a member of Reel Deals magazine and National Film and Sound Archives.

You’ve also been involved in some special screenings, haven’t you?

Over the years I have enjoyed projecting movies for the Coffs Harbour City Council, retirement villages and nursing homes, Coffs Harbour show ground, Bunker Cartoon Gallery, Iluka events and Bellingen Jazz Festival.

Examples of movies screened include: Casablanca, 101 Dalmations, Strictly Ballroom, Night at the Opera, Moulin Rouge, Marx Brothers, Shine and Second Chorus.

Tell us about your passion for the preservation of theatre history.

I have a passion for the theatre industry and am aware of the importance of preserving our national history. Therefore, I have sent a number of films to the National Film and Sound Archives and have been involved in supplying various films for documentaries.

The owner of Coco 39 tells us about her boutique in Sawtell.

Rebecca, when did you open Coco39?

I opened Coco39 in 2009, with help from my dearest relative, Margie. I had originally envisaged a homewares and gift shop with a little fashion to complement my theme.

We all know Coco39 for fashion and styling; have things changed?

Yes, they certainly have. I moved into boutique clothing and styling services for women. I listened to my clientele, and they want more than simply another place to buy clothes. They want to be personally styled.

Is that a bar I see?

We have a bar, fresh Nespresso, bottled water and DVDs for the kids. I have just expanded and opened our Styling Lounge.

Coco39 has embraced customers’ needs and is making their shopping an enjoyable experience. Women love shopping together or with family. We accommodate this.

Do you have any other Coco39 stores, Rebecca?

Where have you been recently shopping for Coco39?

I have just returned from a month of shopping in Manhattan NY. The style in midtown and Soho Manhattan is wonderful. Coco39 stock is arriving now.

What can’t you live without, Rebecca?

My family, always. Coco39 is a passion and creative outlet. My favourite boots, Vigorella basics, Chanel lippy and iPhone are my daily must haves.

Les and Nan Cowling (nee Oxford) were married at Church of England Coffs Harbour on 18 August 1962.

Their reception was held at the C of E Hall in McLean Street and catered by the C of E Ladies Catering Group, with an afternoon tea for about 80 guests. Les and Nan celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary this month, and Nan shares their story with us.

ow did you and Les first meet?

Les became a family friend in 1955 while he was employed by Midco Butcheries on their relieving staff, travelling from Kempsey to Maclean to (work in) their shops. He finally moved to Kitch Willis’ Butchery, that was formerly Midco Coffs Harbour, in 1958.

Was it love at first sight, or did you strike up a friendship which then developed into something special?

Les was in and out of our home for many years before we fell in love in 1959, and it continued on until we married.

Do you remember your first date? Tell us about it.

We grew into this relationship over a long time. However, attending the pictures at the Tasma Theatre was a regular feature. Parking in High Street and chatting with all the locals on a Saturday afternoon, when all the shops except the cafés were closed. Body surfing at the Jetty beach every afternoon after work for nine months of the year was another regular date.

Things were a lot different back then. No need to lock your car or your home. We even left the keys in the car!

Were you living on the Coffs Coast when you started dating?

Yes. Coffs has been our home for over 60

years. With such a marvellous climate, why would you ever want to live anywhere else?

In August you and Les celebrate your Golden Wedding Anniversary. Congratulations! Can you take us back to the day Les proposed?

Who said Les proposed? He is a Libran and they do not like making decisions – so I asked him! It was May, and Les had taken me to Sydney to find work. He was heading back to Coffs. How could I let such a wonderful man leave my life?

So as the saying goes, the rest is history.

And what about the wedding day? Was it a big affair?

The dress was flock nylon with long sleeves, multiple tucks at the waist tying into a huge bow at the back. The wedding cake was made by the bride’s mother and iced by Meg King.

It was a beautiful day. Les was a great one for playing jokes, so we knew we were going to cop the works as far as the car was concerned. They did not disappoint. They smeared Vaseline all over the car and then rubbed confetti into it – even the windscreen and windows. What a mess!

So we drove very slowly out to Korora Bay Road and pulled off the highway to clean the windscreen. When we tried to start off again, we realised the handbrake had locked on. So we turned around and limped back to Coffs and gatecrashed the after party fun at the Hoey Moey.

GOLDEN A N N I V E R SA RY

Only for the pranksters messing up our car, we would not have been back in Coffs on the Sunday morning when we received news that our offer on the Coffs Squash Centre had been accepted, so our married life started at 31 Park Avenue. Wages were very low back then, so we started life with 2 borrowed single beds and a card table to eat off. We made do with second hand furniture, until two years into our marriage we bought a brand new twin tub washing machine on time payment. Up until then, all washing had been done by hand.

That summer was a particularly wet one, and all the visitors to the squash courts were hiring towels @ 1/- each. This meant lots of washing, and Les got blisters from wringing them out ... hence the necessity for a washing machine. No laundrettes in those days.

And 50 years on, you’re still happily married.

What will you be doing to celebrate this milestone?

We are repeating the reception of yesteryear in the same hall at the same time with the same food. It will take the form of an open house from 2 to 4pm, with an afternoon tea at 3pm.

This is a celebration of new and old friendships. Grahame and Janice Watt share our anniversary and will be 56 years married on that day and will be with us in helping us celebrate.

Grahame was the winner of the Bush Poet Laureate award at the Tamworth Country Festival in 2012. He is going to write a poem for this occasion.

Finally, what’s your secret to the success and longevity of marriage?

We both had similar interests but different passions and allowed each other to pursue our own passions. We were both heavily involved with tennis, squash and cricket. Les loved his fishing and horse racing, while I delved into family and local history and Coffs causes like Brelsford Park, the show ground and the Open Spaces campaign. We both supported one another on all issues.

Les could always see the funny side of any point and that has always helped to keep the peace – especially when I take things very seriously. Even when I suggested that I would like to stand for the upcoming Council elections, he didn’t put up any barriers in my way and said he would support me all the way. We have had a wonderful life together and are looking forward to the Diamond Anniversary.

I loved fishing and birds from an early stage and probably got the passion from my mother.

When I was young, I had a frog mouthed owl for a pet and when I would walk home from school, the owl would wait for me to do my chores and then I would take him around the farm and lift the tin up and he would get the mice from underneath. When we moved to our present address, the birds were always around, as my mother in law also fed the birds. I have lorikeets and people from around send birds that have been hurt to me to try to fix them. I also have turkeys and ducks that I feed wheat to. There are numerous birds that come to the house at feeding time.

I love looking after them, feeding and talking to them. They say that to feed birds helps blood pressure. The large volume of birds on the patio was not helping Jenny’s blood pressure, until my son, Simon, who is the owner of ‘Ossie O’ (Outdoor Screening Solutions) installed our screening systems, so now we have full control of the birds’ visits and the added bonus of protection in inclement weather.

You worked for the County Council reading meters; what was that like?

I started for the NRCC in 1967 as a linesman assistant and went on to meter reading and as the disconnection officer before leaving in 2007. It was a good job, and it went from Northern Rivers County Council to NRE, then Northpower and then Country Energy. When I was meter reading, there were quite a few dog bites – but I never blamed the dogs; it was the owners.

It was a lonely job being a meter reader; no one wants them to come, as it would mean a bill for them. I’m glad I’m not there now with the increases in price, as well as the big increase in the service availability fees.

We understand that since retiring you’ve developed an even greater passion for fishing and worming?

I have more time for fishing now, but when I first moved to town I loved fishing for mainly Blackfish and Jewfish. On the night of my sisterin-law’s 21st party, some of the guests said that I wouldn’t catch Blackfish at night. So I went fishing in my suit and caught 8 Blackfish off the railway bridge – and cooked them for breakfast the next morning.

I went to Station Creek a lot, and the reason I am a good fisherman is that I would study them. I applied for a professional worming licence years ago and did that weekends and holidays until I retired. I still love worming, but the seas have knocked the beaches around in the last 3 to 4 years. The biggest Jewfish I caught was 81 lb.

I made a lot of friends through fishing, which I still have to this day.

It is a good sport for anyone to get into.

There are a lot more rules around today, and I can see the reason why. We lived in the best times for fishing. Coffs Creek was a good spot for Blackfish but since the pylons have been taken away, there is no eddy for the water to go around and it is sanded up, which is a shame. Jenny and the kids put up with a lot for me to learn fishing. They would go to bed of a night and wake up to Jewfish in the bath tub, as there wasn’t ice in those days. They would be covered with a corn bag to keep them fresh.

Who is the most famous person you have taught to catch worms? Please explain!

I took Pauline Hanson worming, and she still buys my worms when she is going through Coffs Harbour. I have taught my sons to worm, and the grandchildren are keen. There are many others I have taught, and then there are some who just can’t catch them. My prices are the best on the Coast. I don’t believe in ripping people off.

Itt is is just that given the type of foods we like to play with at Zulu’s and with the intention of bringing new knowledge to you guys, the readers – I figured it was time to expose you to something a little left field, but something you probably have more exposure to than you ever expected.

Ultratex 4 (often simply labelled as Modified Starch) is what is called a cold swelling starch.

To do a little food chemistry 101, starches swell when they absorb moisture, trapping the moisture in the lattice like structures of the starch product. The more rigid the starch, the more complicated the molecule. Most starches are organic and so need heat, or at the very least warmth, to activate or swell.

Ultratex 4 has been modified, though, with acid. This breaks down the structure of the waxy maize starch (see: derived from organic sources) and allows the starch to bond with moisture easier, and hence the starch can swell even in cold liquids. We took an attitude a year ago not to charge people a room hire and we leave our bar at normal pub prices, so I think that’s why we have been so successful with functions. The

What would you say is your point of difference?

We have a busy six months coming up, with the local racing festival in August and that then leads into our now famous Pier Hotel adults only buskers festival in late September. This festival is one of our showcases for the year: 3 nights of adult only comedy during the Coffs Harbour buskers festival. After that, we have a bumper footy finals series to get through. Midway Store retains its two major specialisations, Asian groceries and fresh flower arrangements. It does this while still maintaining the corner store approach for customers who like to park right outside the door and drop in to pick up specialty goods or convenience items.

offs Coast Harvest is about recognising our local food industry, and in particular highlighting local producers and value-adders and those restaurateurs and businesses that are supporting them.

30 stalls that now attend each week, showing that consumers are keen to support their local producers,” Jenny said. Council was also responsible for the development of the Local Food Futures Framework in 2009 and have worked with the community to deliver a number projects identified in the Framework, including the establishment of the Coffs Harbour Community Gardens.

The publication is over 60 pages and includes more than 20 recipes from local chefs, with each recipe featuring locally grown and value added produce. It also includes the Coffs Coast Harvest Calendar – a seasonal guide to what’s available and when on the Coffs Coast, along with a guide to local Growers’ Markets and Community Gardens, and the ‘Harvest Trail,’ a map of the Coffs Coast highlighting more than 30 local food experiences, from the coast to the hinterland.

e are over half way through the year, and it’s the time when things start buzzing. More events are staged at this time of the year and of course, it’s the start of our local racing season. It’s no secret I am a bit partial to the racing scene – I love it! Le Dãin Designs Jewells was a sponsor for a couple of years, and we’ve had huge amounts of fun! We treat ourselves every year to the luxury of the corporate lounge for the Coffs Harbour Gold Cup Carnival – we get a table, we frock up and have a wonderful time. This year, Le Dãin Designs Jewells has joined forces with Barbara Wenman’s gorgeous clinic La Fleur D’Alyse, so there’ll be 20 of us enjoying race day excitement. Can’t wait!

Talking about getting dressed up, it never ceases to amaze me that these days teenage boys are also fashion conscious, and The Son seems to have more body splashes and hair products than me! He whooshes past leaving a trail of blokey cologne strong enough to compete with David Jones’ perfumery! I’ll get back to that later ...

I attended the Grand Opening of the new Coffs Harbour Westpac Commercial and Agribusiness branch.

It was staged at their brand new impressive building on Harbour Drive, where over 120 guests walked onto the red carpet and preceded to enjoy a fabulous evening catered by Allyson Schumer, who has just opened the Rainforest Café at the new Specialist Medical Centre.

This, of course, was all washed down with glasses of bubbles and fine wines. Guests were entertained with a presentation of the history of Westpac in Coffs Harbour from the original opening in 1905, and Steve Young Photography was there snapping away for the event. I keep bumping into Steve at various functions and as he has a swisher camera than me, I always try to wangle a great pic for the night. Thank you Steve!

Craig McGregor opened the night and thanked all their current and future clients for attending. He also thanked dignitaries such as Mayor Keith Rhoades, Andrew Fraser and executives Andrew Davis, Steve Hannan and Graham Jennings. It was a splendid way to launch Westpac’s new presence in Coffs.

I was looking in the work diary the other day and men do a bit of this, but not a lot. These little fritters are so yummy to share with drinks, and are also a guaranteed way to get little ones eating vegetables!

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

• 100 g besan flour (chick pea flour) • Pinch of salt • ½ teaspoon chilli powder • ½ teaspoon cumin powder • ½ teaspoon bicarb soda • Water to make batter • Vegetables – carrot, cauliflower, broccoli, onion, red capsicum.

• Approximately 12 green prawns

1. To make a batter, combine besan flour, salt, chilli powder, cumin powder and bicarb soda with water. Mix until it has a smooth consistency.

2. Thinly slice the vegetables.

3. Ensure the green prawns are peeled and deveined. Slice in half length ways, and then cut into small pieces.

4. Add prawns and vegetables to batter.

5. Deep fry tablespoon sized portions of the mixture in hot oil until fritters are golden brown.

6. Serve with yogurt mixed with chopped fresh mint and coriander.

Quilt Exhibition & Craft Fair

Coffs Harbour Regional Conservatorium has an annual program designed to support budding young musicians with their music studies. Each year around $20,000 is applied to scholarships, bursaries, family discounts and to the Con’s ensemble program. Right now the Con is inviting applications for the 2013 Scholarship and Bursary Program. There are Junior Scholarships for instrumentalists and singers aged 8 to under 15 years and Senior Scholarships for those aged 15 to under 25 years.

“Scholarships and Bursaries pay for about 80% of the fees,” says Director Carol Hellmers, “so they are well worth having.” Scholarship applicants need to present themselves at a short audition in early November – there is plenty of time to prepare. Bursary applications, which help families at a financial disadvantage, just require a statement of family earnings. Applications are open now! Anyone can apply but if successful, tuition must be taken at the Conservatorium. The closing date is Saturday 22 September, so phone now – 6652 1592 for details. Coffs Quilters & Needlecraft Inc will be holding its annual Quilt Exhibition and Craft Fair at the Coffs Harbour Race Club and Function Centre, Howard Street, Coffs Harbour.

Everyone is invited, and you will not want to miss this popular once a year event.

The Coffs Quilters and Needlecraft Inc. meet on Thursday mornings and have over 100 members who love to come together to share knowledge and ideas on quilting and needlecraft projects. The Exhibition is an opportunity to show these projects, but to also fundraise for local charities. Their main charity is the Coffs Regional Cancer service, and last year they donated $10,000 to this service.

The Quilt Exhibition and Craft Fair starts on Friday 24 August and goes right through to Sunday 26 August.

Opening times are Friday and Saturday, 9am - 4pm, Sunday 9am - 3pm. There will be a vast array of magnificent quilts and fine needlework on display, as well as a huge assortment of trading tables. There will be workshops and raffles, as well as professional traders and members trading.

Entry is $5 only, and morning and afternoon teas as well as lunch will be available.

Calling all former students of Austin College in Armidale Austin, the youngest of the UNE colleges, has provided accommodation for more than 10,000 UNE students since its opening in 1972. The Austin College 40th Anniversary weekend in October 2012, is entitled ‘Only at Austin!’ and has already generated huge interest from alumni.

The celebration events include Bierfest on Friday, Saturday will begin with breakfast and then a chance for alumni to catch up and relive their memories! Booloominbah will be open for tours until midday. We’re offering a BBQ lunch, followed by a free afternoon to explore the campus. There will be an exhibition of photographs from Austin’s history in college, plus ‘spot yourself’ photo displays that go back to 1972! Dr Brian Seppelt’s portrait by artist Jane Nash will be unveiled.

We are recreating some ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s themed bedrooms to trigger their memories, and our brave alumni can choose to stay in their old room – luxury!

EMILY PARKES. Coffs Harbour mountain bike rider Emily Parkes has her eyes fixed on the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and at just 16 years of age, she is currently the under 19 female champion of the All Mountain Cup National Mountain Bike Series. We catch up with Emily for a chat ...

W

hen did you first start riding competitively?

Ever since I was very young I’ve enjoyed sport and as I grew older, I refined that to fast sport. My parents were the family that received phone calls from concerned neighbours that they had seen me zooming down the hill AGAIN on my skateboard at speeds far too fast to be safe. And then I discovered that bikes can do the same! I was introduced to mountain biking by my sports loving dad and after a few races, a local bike rider noticed that maybe I had what it takes to be a really good racer. And so Justine Leahy (former Australian 24 hour champion) took me under her wing and started to coach me.

What have been some of your greatest achievements in mountain biking so far?

Justine and her partner coached and accompanied me on tour in the 2011/12 Australian National Mountain Bike Series. I raced in Perth, Adelaide, Mt Buller (VIC), Mt Stromlo (ACT) and Awaba (NSW). My first national series, and I won the female Under 19 category!

My current sponsor, Torq Australia (sports nutrition and fitness consultancy) then recognised my future and accepted me into their Mountain Bike Team of Australian elite riders – a huge honour and a massive boost to my career. In June this year I came third female in the half marathon at the National Marathon Championships in Canberra.

You recently travelled to New Zealand for the Oceania Mountain Bike Championships, where you represented Australia ...

Following my National Series win, I was then selected into the Junior Mountain Bike Long Team and asked to represent Australia and race at the Oceanias in Rotorua, New Zealand, in March this year. This was my toughest race. The New Zealanders knew the track well and had incredible skill. Although I was the winning Australian, I still only managed 4th place. Despite intensive efforts, I still have a long way to go!

Are you riding in the Pleasure and Pain Mountain Bike enduro in September?

Of course! I always enjoy racing locally, and 24 coffs coast focus.

especially on the Pleasure and Pain Track! On 9 September this year, Refusenix Racing will deliver their second Pleasure and Pain endurance event in conjunction with Coffs Harbour Cycle Club’s MTB wing. This is a 25, 50 or 100 km teams or solo race set in beautiful Pine Creek. It is a very popular race, catering for all ages (providing you can ride a minimum of 25 km on dirt!) and all levels of racers. I look forward to this race as a solo racer; although, I have not yet decided on the distance, as it will depend on my training at that time, which needs to fit around national racing. I enjoy this race, as it really shows off the Coffs Coast – lovely forests with some fun and challenging track!

Tell us about your involvement with Refusenix Racing and the Numbers 4 Em initiative.

Racing is a very expensive sport. I require several bikes depending on conditions and type of race/training I do. Travelling around Australia to compete in races such as marathons, state races, 24 hour races, road biking tours, training camps etc is also very draining financially. I was thrilled to be approached by Refusenix Racing, who suggested a fundraising idea for me ,which I am very excited about. Refusenix Racing is an event organising business based in Coffs Harbour that aims to promote rider-focused events in CrossCountry and Gravity disciplines. Racers can help me out by bidding for a race number. Racers register for Pleasure and Pain and choose a race plate number, then bid on that number to ensure they win their lucky number! Funds raised will help me further my racing career around Australia and hopefully further.

You have a bright future ahead. What are your goals for the next 5 years?

This year I will again compete in the Australian National Series. I am also training for selection in the World Cup to be held in Austria later this year. My five year goal though, is ambitious, but I believe achievable – 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Mountain Biking in Australia is a relatively new sport and to be a female in the sport makes my goal an even tougher one. It’s a tough sport though, and I believe I have what it takes!

ou’ve been on the Aussie Hip Hop scene for a while now. What do you think was the defining moment in your career, where you really thought, “Wow …

I’ve made it”?

There’ve been a few, I guess; thankfully they keep happening! Probably the first one would have been when I got my first album pack from the presses, then the first time I heard one of my tracks on Triple J, then the first time I got to headline my own tour.

You mentioned Triple J. They’re obviously a great platform for launching the careers of a lot of Australian artists, and you personally have had a few hits on the Hottest 100 over the years. So how do you think the station has helped you?

They’re pretty vital to how well the Australian music scene in general is doing, I think. They’ve been really supportive of me. I grew up listening to them, and they have really backed me over the last few years. They’ve definitely played a massive part in my career, particularly with being able to tour; because they’re a national broadcaster, they hit everybody. So they’ve been really important to me.

And you got to do a ‘Like A Version’ with them as well! What was that like?

That was a few years ago now, but we got asked to go on there in the early days. Did a Pixies cover, Where’s My Mind. It went pretty well … I stayed up all night the night before freaking out that what I was doing didn’t make any sense. But thankfully, people dug it!

Well, it’s on my playlist!

On the new album we’ve actually got Where’s My Mind Part 2, which is pretty much the same thing, just taking all the beats from Aussie Hip Hop songs from the last 3 years and making a new song out of them.

Oh, that’s exciting! So let’s talk about the new album now …

Bring It Back is your third album; how does it differ from your first two releases?

It definitely has a lot more of the traditional Hip Hop sound to it. There’s no sung choruses, other than stuff that I’ve done myself. There’s a lot more DJ cuts, scratches, and it’s a much more traditional Hip Hop sounding album from what I’m sort of known for. It started out as a passion project … I was just recording some tracks in between albums, we’re working on the follow up from The Chase at the moment as well, but then it started to take shape and the tracks kept piling up.

So I thought we’ve probably got enough here to make quite a good album, so we ended up putting The Chase sequel on hold and we got stuck into Bring It Back ... and that’s how it came about.

What was it like actually writing that album then, in between other things?

It was a lot of fun. Because it was done without the intention to begin with of releasing it as an

album, it was just writing for the sake of writing.

On The Chase I didn’t have any guest verses, and on this one there’s a sh*tload. Half the bloody Aussie Hip Hop scene are on the record! It was a lot of fun getting everyone involved and being able to work with a lot of mates, which I don’t usually do.

I usually stick to a small circle of people, so it was a really different recording process.

Simply summed up, it was sort of stepping out of my comfort zone, but stepping totally into my comfort zone as well. It was good.

You mentioned that you got to work with a few artists. Obviously on The Chase you collaborated with Owl Eyes, and on the new album you’ve worked with the likes of Pez, which is pretty cool. What’s it like collaborating with such awesome artists?

It’s a blessing, really. I’m very fortunate to be able to do it. A lot of the dudes that are on Bring It Back are some of my favourites in the country, whether that’s producers or emcees. I’m stoked they think highly enough of me to lend me their voices!

Everyone brings their own style to the table, so it’s a more communal approach to making music, which is definitely something new for me … and it’s awesome!

So who are some of the artists and bands that you’ve drawn inspiration from over the years to create your own music?

On the Aussie Hip Hop scene, definitely Hilltop Hoods, Drapht, Bliss n Eso … I’ve definitely taken a lot from them both personally, or just from watching how they go about doing what they do. Closer to home there’s M-Phazes, my DJ and one of my best mates. He’s a constant source of inspiration, just because of his work ethic and his talent. I’m very lucky to be surrounded with mates and people whom I can find inspiration from almost constantly.

We have a pretty awesome Hip Hop scene in Australia, don’t we?

We really do. It’s going to be interesting … I don’t know if people from overseas would be open to it. There’s definitely the skill and the quality there, it’s just sort of, I guess, the right songs, but I think there’s potential there.

I was watching an interview on TV recently with Will.I.Am. He was talking about how he came up with his rap name, and it got me thinking … what’s the story behind ILLY? I don’t have a good story at all! In all the years that I’ve been asked, I haven’t even just made one up … I might have to do that! But my name is Alasdair, and my little sister used to call me Ally.

Then my friends as we were teenagers started calling me ILLY, and that’s it! (Laughs.) It’s just my nickname … there’s absolutely no cool story. But I like that, because it meant that when I was starting out, I didn’t come up with something like MC F-ing Legend or some awful name that I’d have to change!

You’re about to tour the country with Bring It Back. What are some of the tracks of this album that you can’t wait to perform live?

The next single, the one with Pez, I’m really looking forward to doing that. Hopefully we’ll be able to get him to some of the shows. Heard It All, the first single, I’ve done that twice now, but both

times it was before they’d played it on radio ... so no one knew it, but now people do; so I’m really looking forward to that one. And just a few of the more really different sounding tracks from what I’m known for. I think they’re going to go down really well … they’re really energetic, and I’m confident that the set is going to be one of our best.

Now I must admit that The Chase is one of my favourite Aussie Hip Hop albums, so PLEASE tell me that there’s going to be some of the old favourites in there as well …?

Of course! We’re going to throw a few of those Friday Flips in, we’re going to throw in a handful of tracks off the new album, and then all the hits, mate!

You’re stopping at Coffs Harbour on the tour.

Have you been here before?

Actually, I came up for a holiday in January this year. We stayed about 10 minutes north of the town in a caravan/camping park, and we had one of the huts right on the beach. It was awesome. So I have been up there, but not for shows. We went to the Bluejuice gig while we were up there, and we got kicked out … that was awesome! I think that was at the venue we’re playing at this time, so I’m really looking forward to going back … and hopefully not getting kicked out!

Hopefully not! We’d be a little disappointed if you didn’t show up! Ha ha!

(Laughs.) Yeah, get kicked out of my own gig!

That would suck! It’s been a few years since that’s happened … ha ha!

So what are you looking forward to about the regional shows?

It’s always good playing them, because people really appreciate you going. They’re not always as big as some of the capital city ones, but I’ve found some of my favourite places in the country are the regional shows, because the crowds just really appreciate you being there. I don’t understand why more acts don’t do more extensive regional shows.

People need live music all over the place, not just in the capitals, so we do what we can about it.

Now I’ve got one final question for you … if you could have dinner with anyone at all, dead or alive, who would it be?

I dunno … Winston Churchill? He’d be pretty good. I mean, there’s the obvious ones like Jay-Z or someone, but Winston Churchill’s a pretty awesome dude. He ended a war … and he was a pisshead!

Some of his quotes when he was drunk are amazing! So I reckon he’d be good value!

Perhaps you and him could get kicked out of the pub together!

Builders and tradesmen are climbing over each other to find work; and their rates are competitive. Now is the time to renovate and jazz the place up a little. Why wait ‘til another boom, when all the trades are busy.

That’s a fair assessment. What does the future hold if the economy picks up? A busy spring and with all the fantastic products around, outdoor entertaining is very attractive. Large pavers, BBQ areas and stained timber decks are a great acquisition to any home. With a good concept and imagination, anything is possible.

s a frequent Fashions on the Field contestant from the Gold Coast to Melbourne and more recently, the ambassador for Grafton’s Race Carnival, I assure you that Coffs Harbour is no exception to this – I have seen all sorts!

No matter which part of the racecourse you plan to spend your day, whether it be competing in the fashion stakes or simply enjoying Coffs Harbour’s biggest social event, there are some guidelines as to what is race-appropriate: Consider the weather. August is still winter; incorporate a jacket, or wear longer sleeves. Also, gloves or hosiery will really polish off the winter-look.

Headwear is a MUST. Again, it is winter, so felt or heavier fabrics are most appropriate, but you should at least have something on your head. And be careful it doesn’t give you a headache – you must keep it on all day.

Keep hair and makeup classic. Closed in shoes are most appropriate, especially if you’re wearing hosiery; however, a peep toe is also OK. You can wear any heel height – but just remember that you need to keep them on ALL day and you need to be

able to walk like a lady, not a truckie, so at least wear them in!

Racewear is best when it is feminine and pretty – think garden party, not dance party.

Don’t wear a strapless, spaghetti strap or one shouldered number. It’s winter! Save that little number for spring or a night club and seriously reconsider the thigh-high splits, any flash of midriff or Erin Brockovich-style cleavage.

It is not a formal event – so if it’s ground length, satin, sequined, strapless or been worn to a school formal, a wedding or anything similar, it’s not the day to bring it out again!

No matter how fantastic your legs are, put on your race dress and put your arms by your side. Do your fingertips reach longer than your hemline? Yes? Ask for a refund.

Keep tanning to a minimum. That ‘healthy glow’ is a sign of skin cells in trauma (or in my opinion, a woman with too much time on her hands) not good health. If going for a spray tan, be careful of the citrus look.

Basically, if it can be worn to a nightclub, then now is not the time to wear it.

One last thing to remember, particularly if considering entering Fashions on the Field, is your deportment. All the annoying things that Nana consistently reminded me of while growing up, are actually just as important as the outfit itself. Stand up straight, shoulders back, walk elegantly in your shoes, and maintain this all day.

As Coco Chanel said: “A woman should always be two things: classy and fabulous!”

Last race season, I interviewed Kate Waterhouse, so I couldn’t resist the opportunity when it arose to interview Kate’s mother.

She is, of course, the hardworking, multi skilled woman who has been labelled Australia’s female racing monarch – Gai Waterhouse.

I

have just finished reading your book, Gai: In My Words. With your extremely busy lifestyle, it is hard to imagine how you keep up with your blog, let alone find time to turn it into a book. You obviously enjoy writing; can we expect another?

I totally enjoy writing my daily blog, and it only seemed fitting to turn it into a book.

Together with the help of Editor Stephen Howell, we created a book which is the product of my thoughts, philosophy and the events which were documented each day over a period of three years. As my blog is an ongoing process, there is always a possibility of a second.

It is also the matter of finding the time.

With your busy lifestyle, you have a very early start; I bet you are one of the first trainers at the track. What time do you start your working day? And how do you keep your energy levels up?

I start work a lot earlier than most (laughs) – usually about 3am. You could say I am one of the first at the track. The first ride is at 4am, and then the horses start their training between 4.30 - 5am. In regards to keeping my energy levels up, I lead a quiet life, eat well and try to look after myself. Having a sleep during the day helps me, together with regular daily massages.

I also like to retire at 9.30pm every night. It’s all about routine.

How do you know what the horse needs and if it has potential?

When I look at a horse, I can see if it has potential, then I focus on what can be improved. What can I live with? No horse is perfect! The horse has to get fit, but they also need rest and play time. I watch certain things.

Does the horse need more conditioning? Is it on the right programme? You can’t run a horse into the ground and expect it to win. Detail is everything!

To keep up this fast pace, you must have a dedicated and loyal team working for you?

There are many that make it all work, and here are just a few: My driver, Damien Gaffney. We make quite a team; we travel together everywhere. (Laughs.)

You could say we are like Batman and Robin!

Jane Ormsby is one of my Personal Assistants, along with Susie Loewy. They look after my social life, organise the days at the races and schedule all of my meetings and charity events.

Natasha Kent is my Racing Manageress, who is responsible for programming the horses, booking the jockeys and putting together programmes for the Racing Carnivals.

Bruce Slade is my Racing Manager. He is multi skilled and helps buy and sell the horses. His job also entails placing the horses with the new and existing owners. He keeps me in the loop, so to speak.

Another person on the team is Sonja, my housekeeper. I may switch on the oven (laughs), but she is the one who cooks the meals and organises the house!

These are just a few, but we all work together very well to make it all happen.

With a husband and son who are both successful bookies, I can’t see you discussing much more than racing when the three of you are together!

It is true to say that when we get together we spend a lot of time discussing the racing world.

All the family have always been passionate about the lifestyle; they have dedicated themselves to it. Along with enjoying the family, it’s what we love.

I have seen you in action, and you are furiously passionate about your job. Do you still have the drive and enthusiasm that you had when you started out?

It is funny you ask that, because I was looking at an old book I was given a while ago, and I can honestly say that even though the hats have changed (back then they were a bit

outrageous), the photo of me smiling out with a look of total enthusiasm is the same woman I am today. I am a very driven person; obviously my family comes first, but I live and breathe the racing world.

What can we look forward to from the Waterhouse stables this spring?

There is so much to look forward to. We have just taken over the training of Rock ‘n’ Pop from Te Akau. Trainer Jason Bridgman brought him over from New Zealand, and we are going to shape his future stallion career. He already has a top class reputation, and he is a listed winner and Group One in New Zealand. He is the most exciting stallion prospect to come out of NZ since So You Think, and I intend to add an Australian Group One to his CV. We see him with the Epsom Handicap as a spring target.

I have read that you’ve had an ongoing relationship with David Ellis, who runs the Te Akau Racing and Breeding Operation.

Please tell us about that.

Yes, that is true (smiles). Actually, David Ellis gave me ‘Te Akau Nick’, who was my very first Group One Victory in 1992 Metropolitan Handicap in my first year of training.

When you take some precious time off from your busy schedule, what do you enjoy doing?

I love to spend time with my family and also enjoy travelling. If the two go hand in hand, it’s even better.

You have enjoyed another hugely successful season. What is one of your best memories of the Autumn Carnival?

There are some great memories. I predicted last spring that the colt Pierro was a potential for the Golden Slipper. I am sure I surprised a few when he delighted us all and won the $3.5 million Golden Slipper this year!

With twenty years of unprecedented success under your belt, what are your dreams for the future?

I would love to win at Royal Ascot. I love the racing and the area. I just want to train as many

winners as I can and carry on doing what I love, and do it well!

On a lighter note, Le Dãin Designs has had the pleasure of designing some jewels for the Waterhouse Ladies and your charity events, and we would like to find out a few of your fashion secrets! We know you are the ambassador for David Jones; have you got a favourite designer, and who is your milliner of choice?

My favourite milliner at the moment is Neil Griegg, who is renowned for his hand designed flowers. Also on my favourite milliners list at the moment is Jane Lambert. One of the designers I love is Camilla, who always manages to capture the colours and the warmth of the Australian sunshine in her styles. She is remarkable with her designs.

You have just attended your daughter Kate’s wedding. As mother of the bride, which label did you wear for the big event?

For Kate’s wedding I wore a beautiful outfit designed by Alex Perry. He is another of Australia’s outstanding Couturiers. I also have to mention that the gorgeous bridesmaids were dressed by Carla Zampatti.

When I interviewed your daughter Kate, I asked her how many hats she owned, and she laughed and said not as many as you!

Is this true? Do you need a walk in hat robe to store them all?

Well, to be honest, I think I have more hats than my daughter Kate, but I don’t keep them all ... I do give a lot away to charity. Actually, I don’t have a walk in robe, but I do have a beautiful glass cabinet where I store all of them. Dressing up for the races is part of all the excitement of the day.

From once utilising a preview room in your office, where the client would come to view the ad, we can now just email them an mp4 file, and they can approve it from any device they choose, albeit an iPhone, PC, Tablet – the flexibility is there. By embracing technology, we can turn around ads quicker, but still with the highest level of quality – which is great for us and our clients.

Being a successful small business owner, are there any tips to success that you can share?

The most important tip I think I can reinforce is to enjoy what you do and have a passion for it.

When you do this, success will always follow. It’s not about the money. I also think it is important to have a point of difference from competitors and to never compromise it. My aim is to make good quality TV ads, and I never compromise on this guiding principle.

You mentioned that having a happy work environment and staff is an important part of a successful business. How have you achieved this in your business?

It’s important to have a balance with work and play, and this extends to staff. In my business I have strived to really create a flexible work environment, where give and take is encouraged, as long as it doesn’t affect work commitments.

It works, because of the mutual respect and understanding I have with my staff. I also think rewarding staff with incentives is really valuable at empowering them to go the extra mile. And I don’t mean sales incentives! We sit down and talk to our staff about things they enjoy in their lives and reward them with something they really want. For example, one staff member wanted to get into BMX riding, so we decided to go halves in the cost of a new bike for him.

Do you have a mentor? Tell us about him/ her and how they have helped you in your career/life?

My dad is probably my biggest mentor. He lives in Sydney and runs a successful retail fashion

business. He’s always the first person I call if I need business advice. He’s very proud of what I’ve achieved, and I can definitely attribute a lot of my success to his guidance and unwavering support.

Jack McCoy has also been a big influence on me. He taught me so much about filming and to never compromise. He was always the first on the beach and the last to leave at sunset. His commitment and dedication always ensured he got the most amazing shots, and that’s why he’s undoubtedly the best surfing cinematographer in the world.

You recently won the Coffs Harbour Westpac Bank’s small business grant for innovation in small business – congratulations! What does this award mean for your business?

We were very honoured to receive this award from Westpac Bank. Coastal Media has always tried to invest in the latest equipment and technology, and this grant will allow us to keep on the edge of innovation with our work. We recently produced an ad for the C.ex Group filming a car out on the Jetty and edited it using new 3D technology.

I want Coastal Media to be able to compete with the large metro media businesses and not just be seen as a small regional business. So it’s very important to be up to date with the latest filming capabilities and editing technologies in this industry – otherwise we’ll be left for dead!

You’re also involved in many local community events ...

I have set up a company called Village Sports with another local, Mick Maley, and one of the events we are running is an Olympic Distance triathlon in early March 2013. We’re really excited to have secured BCU as the major sponsor for the next 3 years.

All profits will be donated to local children’s charities. The interest has been overwhelming.

We’re so lucky to be able to showcase Coffs with a spectacular swim course in the harbour, a ride out along Hogbin Drive and a run around the jetty foreshores.

Young Inventors Solar Challenge Youth Directions is encouraging local students to take action against climate change and global warming by participating in the annual Young Inventors Solar Challenge.

Teams or individual Year 7 and 8 students studying Science and Technology are challenged to design and produce a solar powered device with a practical application within a set budget.

The 2010 winning team from Toormina High School went on to compete on the ABC’s New Inventors program. Two of their inventions – a clothes line cover triggered by rain and a wheelie bin propelled by a dynamo motor were featured on national television. Other solar powered devices designed by local students include: cattle prod, LED house numbers, mobile phone charger, scarecrow and portable boom box.

Youth Directions invites all local high schools from Macksville to Maclean to participate in the Young Inventors Solar Challenge.

Entry forms must be completed by 14 September, and students must submit their inventions by 23 November. Winners will be announced at the Youth Leading the World Environmental congress in early December.

Youth Directions is a locally grown, not-for profit organisation creating opportunities for young people to realise their potential.

She researched where she could study and where work was available and set her sights on a TAFE course just outside Maroochydore. She saved up, submitted a strong application with all the paperwork, found a place to rent suitable for her pet bird, got her driver’s licence and co-ordinated a move.

lenn Soper Electrical is a local employer keen to see more women electricians and willing to consider jobseekers with disabilities.

Before Rubii headed off for the bright lights of Maroochydore, CHESS Employment asked Glenn Soper for some last-minute advice.

“We find the best in their field are also professionally generous, like Glenn Soper Electrical,” said CHESS General Manager, Paul Kelly.

When Glenn Soper heard Rubii’s story, he asked one of his experienced electricians, Paul Tomlinson, to give her some pointers on her career.

Paul encouraged Rubii to be patient, ask lots of questions in class and not to worry about the challenging course.

“I would definitely look at employing women, as female electricians are often brilliant at the technical aspects of the work, Glenn said. “Female electricians are an important part of the future of the trade.”

Electricians now perform highly complex work, as integrated data and communications systems are now installed.

“Our business was one of the first locally to diversify into data communications, so we understand the need to invest in training variety and also mentorship,” Glenn said.

“For us to consider a person with disabilities, they would need to be able to handle the physicality of the job, be reliable and able to concentrate in what is dangerous work.

“I would need to know the job agency could manage the risk for me employing someone with a mental health issue, to be responsible for any problems that came up, so I can concentrate on training them as well as I can.

“Electrical work is complex and dangerous, making mentoring important, so we only hire one apprentice every four years and pair them with one or two tradesmen,” he said.

Glenn was so impressed with Rubii’s efforts to become an electrician, he invited her to phone him for any future mentoring she needed.

s I have mentioned in previous articles, I disagreed with much of the hype that was being spread by some international as well as national commentators in relation to the so called ‘Australian Property Bubble’ and how it was going to burst. The figures are now in and over the last year, property prices across the Coffs Harbour Local Government area show only a miniscule dip in house prices of 0.72%. What makes this figure even more impressive is that the figures are actually now trending upwards.

Selling in a reasonable time frame is every genuine vendor’s aim, second only to selling for the highest possible price. Yet most agents say that the hardest sale to make is the one that comes along in the first days of marketing.

Inexperienced vendors are often unaware of the mechanics of the marketing process. They think that if Purchaser One is prepared to pay ‘X dollars’ in the first week of marketing, then Purchaser Two will pay ‘X dollars plus’ the next week. Or the other fatal trap: they believe they may have listed too low. They say things like: “If the first ad brings in this sort of response, what will the second one bring?” It’s as if price increases incrementally with time.

Vendors should be aware of the processes that are set in motion when a property first comes on the market. A property attracts the greatest amount of attention, if marketed properly, when it is first presented. If you were to plot this information on a graph, you would see a large spike of enquiry in the first week, which begins to taper off from about week two. All the purchasers that have been looking for their ideal home for weeks and months converge eagerly on a new listing. These are the qualified purchasers – the ones who have done their homework and know exactly what their money will buy. New listings attract numbers, and numbers mean competition, and it’s competition that creates the climate that generates the highest offers. This is the time when a purchaser who falls in love with a property will be afraid that someone else will snap it up before they do. The longer a property is on the market at a given price, the more the sense of competition fizzles out, and the more likely subsequent purchasers are to feel they have plenty of time to make up their minds.

The feeling that time is on their side gives purchasers the psychological edge. Basically, they feel they can afford to offer less with more chance of getting a bargain; it’s not hard for them to work out that a property is getting stale.

purchasers ask an agent during an inspection is, “How long has it been on the market?” A property starts to go stale once all the ‘qualified’ purchasers have inspected it. Those who come on the scene subsequently are new to the marketplace and have yet to work out what their money will buy. Naturally, new purchasers are unready and unwilling to commit themselves until they have done their homework.

In the final analysis, the vendor’s two main aims are not separable; they are two sides of the same coin. Selling for the highest price usually means getting serious about that early offer.

Vendors who fall victim to First Offer Syndrome often regret their early refusal to negotiate when they discover that further down the track they end up settling for less.

Vendors and purchasers frequently ask for advice when negotiating on property.

Vendors want to know how to respond to a purchaser’s first offer. Purchasers want to know what sort of offer to make – interestingly enough, not because they are looking for a bargain (although some people are!) but because they like the property so much they are afraid their offer will offend (although some aren’t).

Purchasers who have done their homework are their own best advisers – especially since a more professional agent will always be acting for the vendor. By the time purchasers are ready to make an offer, they know what is selling for what price. But they need to be realistic – a ridiculous initial offer on a competitively priced property rarely ends up the bargain the purchaser was hoping for. Vendors who are offended often refuse to come back with a counter offer, and the purchaser misses out on the opportunity to buy.

Many people forget that negotiation is a two-way process – a kind of adjustment where two parties evolve slowly to a position they find mutually satisfactory. Vendors who won’t negotiate miss out on genuine purchasers and end up selling for less in the long run when the property becomes stale. Only very skilled negotiators know when refusing to negotiate is the best strategy. Whether you’re a purchaser or a vendor, leaving a window open for negotiation usually means you won’t get the door closed on the sale. A non-negotiation stance is confrontationist and leads to a breakdown in communication and a no-sale. Vendors who don’t negotiate never find out the highest price their would-be purchaser is prepared to pay.

Even if they don’t like the highest offer, the information is useful for future comparison with other offers.
