e seem to have a bit of a ‘changing of the guards’ situation happening with FOCUS at the moment. It is with much sadness that we announce that, after 2 years of dedicated service, our fabulous Advertising Consultant, Nicci Seccombe, is leaving the FOCUS team to pursue a career in Brisbane. Nicci has been with FOCUS since we first opened our doors in Coffs back in 2010, and we have really enjoyed having her as part of our team. While we will miss her, we wish her all the best in her new venture. Go get ‘em Nicci!

But as one door closes, another one opens … or reopens in this case. To step in to Nicci’s shoes, we welcome back the lovely Kylie Soultanian. Kylie worked with us last year, and after a few months away has come back to join us. We are very much looking forward to having Kylie back on our team, and we are sure you’re going to be seeing much more of her around in the coming months.

An instant musical rapport between Jenni & Javier evolved into the Miel Crudo experience – a unique celebration of 'world' music. ow did Miel Crudo come to fruition?

Jenni: My lifelong friend, Jules, got us to meet up about 3 years ago, and we had an instant musical rapport with each other; however, we both needed a catalyst or kick start to get the music going. The catalyst was meeting each other – we seem to bounce off each other's music style with no stressful effort, which is a great thing.

Javier: That’s it in a nutshell – we just clicked.

You were originally known as Raw Honey. Why did the name change, and what does it mean?

Javier: The name change came about as we evolved as a duo. We had more original and exotic tunes, so we wanted a more original and exotic name which defined and reflected what we are now – hence the name Miel Crudo came about. In addition, as I’m of Spanish heritage, it seemed appropriate and extremely relevant – the name translates to 'Raw Honey' in English.

Jenni: 'Raw Honey' defined what we are doing – an unplugged feel without any additional instruments or special effects; however, we felt that the Spanish translation reflected our sound more accurately.

Introduce us to the members of Miel Crudo and the instruments they each play.

Javier: The band consists of two members – Jenni Willow, who is one of the most passionate and creative musicians I have had the pleasure of collaborating with, and myself, Javier Serrano.

I play a Maton acoustic guitar, which has a distinctive and unique tone to it, and Jenni plays a powerful bellowing Taylor, which acts as the motherboard of our combined sound.

Jenni: We also have the sweetest little 9 string acoustic/electric guitar (it was originally a 12 string, but we removed 3 strings to change the sound). Amazingly, we can play it to sound like a Mandolin, Balalaika or even a Sitar. It’s a joy!

Tell us about your style of music and its origins.

Javier: Our style of music is difficult to define, as it fits into many genres of music, each with its own unique sound. You could loosely call it 'Intercontinental' or 'World 4 coffs coast focus.

Music', as it originates from a collective memory of sounds and styles throughout both our lifetimes. Amazingly, this unique collective of sound just shines when we play together; mostly spontaneous, our music is never or rarely planned.

Jenni: To be honest, we just pick around and something comes together.

We don’t consciously set out to have a song with a theme; if it happens, it happens.

We often say, “Gee, that sounds Russian” or “Hey, that sounds Arabic” or “That’s a bit Irish”– and around the world we go!

Where did your passion for music, and in particular, this style, stem from?

Javier: I don’t really know where MY passion for music comes from; however, I have definitely been influenced by a number of musical genres, from hard Rock to traditional classical to Flamenco guitar, but most of what we’re playing as Miel Crudo tends to be spontaneous.

Jenni: We believe we have been bestowed with the ability to make wonderful music – an amazing gift! I can remember humming entire piano concertos when I was only 4 years old (I would hide in the cupboard and pretend to be the radio for my sisters). I’ve been playing piano since I was nine and love that medium just as much as the guitar. I’m not sure where my style comes from, but it definitely comes from the soul.

Who and what have been some of your influences throughout your career?

Javier: My love of music and natural curiosity for all things music amount to influences drawn from a massive range of genres and sub-cultures, from Van Halen and ACDC to Paco De Lucia and Julian Bream.

Jenni: From an early age, we had Classical music constantly blaring in our house; add to that the delicious 1960s cocktail sounds and the Tijuana Brass (which was so cool), and I feel it's safe to say my musical interests are eclectic.

However, I’m not sure if I’m influenced by that style of music, as I prefer not to mold myself on other music or musicians, but allow my music to take its own path; although, I’ve always been nuts about Jeff Beck. When I first heard his Truth album, I almost went into orbit. Way ahead of his time, that’s for sure.

Then there’s my love of Jimmy Page with his amazing riffs, Jimi Hendrix and Eric

Clapton.

You recently finished recording an album; tell us about that.

Javier: The album is the culmination of the music and energy that continues to flow between us – a documentation of our work. It features all original music, which is raw, sweet, yet a little quirky ... a tapestry of uniquely different sounds drawn from different cultures.

Jenni: Our album Salt of the Earth is a juxtaposition of songs about daily life, observations, our surrounds, the random, the mundane, the exciting. It’s a musical journey that focuses entirely on the experiential aspect of sound, without any vocal additions.

We are both so proud of the end result and can’t wait to share the Miel Crudo experience through this album.

What other plans have you got in the pipeline for 2012?

Javier: Our focus for the coming months is to promote our album and to develop and foster ongoing relationships with venues/ clients with the objective of securing gig bookings up and down the East Coast.

We also have plans for another album.

Jenni: Our ultimate goal is to be out there playing. There’s nothing more rewarding than to have folks coming up to you and saying, “We loved that” or “You made me feel good”. That’s our utopia.

However, we understand the importance

of ensuring that Miel Crudo is ready from a business perspective (i.e. development and implementation of our online presence via our website and social media network marketing channels), so we have also concentrated our efforts on the actual 'business' side of things, so potential clients and fans have easy access to our music and direct contact with us.

Where can people find out more, and how do they book you for a gig?

Jenni: We have a dynamite promoter and marketing guru called Mel Cox of Marshmello Marketing. She is responsible for promoting and marketing Miel Crudo and is also focusing on the development and implementation of our online presence. She really believes in us and has been an absolute pearl.

ell us about your Aboriginal heritage ...

Giinagay (Hello, how are you) in Gumbaynggirr language.

I am a proud Gumbaynggirr/Bundjalung man, born and raised ba nggiirr/B on the Coffs coast. I was raised by my mum, a strong Bundjalung woman and have one sister who is much younger than me. Growing up, we didn’t know much about our Aboriginal heritage or language, but we did often use a few lingo words around the house such as niing (stop), buluuny (stomach) and jarjum (kids).

While growing up, I had an opportunity to learn more about my heritage, as I was given the chance in Year nine at high school to attend a ‘Gumbaynggirr Language class’ over at the Coffs Harbour Education Campus.

I was so excited to learn not only about the traditional language from our Gumbaynggirr Nation, but more about myself as an individual – as an Aboriginal man. I felt more of a connection to the land and spiritually from learning the language. Through participating in the course and building my knowledge, I was given the opportunity to teach the Gumbaynggirr language at several schools on the Coffs Coast, including Tyalla Primary School, Woolgoolga High and Primary Schools, Sandy Beach Primary School, as well as with very young koori kids at Kulai Preschool in Coffs.

I am currently teaching language at my old high school, John Paul College, which is fantastic. I truly feel like I am giving back to the community and helping to revitalise our language.

Was celebrating your cultural identity a part of your school life?

I went to St Augustine’s Primary School in Coffs and then attended John Paul College for my high school education. Both schools encouraged Aboriginal students to explore their heritage and identity through class activities,

What is happening in Coffs for NAIDOC Week that people can be involved in?

There is a lot happening in Coffs for NAIDOC Week. One of my favourites is the Official Opening and Flag Raising at the Coffs Harbour City Council, on Monday 2 July this year.

And if you want to see some deadly talent from local Aboriginal artists, come along to the ‘Goori’s Got Deadly Talent’ night being held at the Jetty Theatre Tuesday 3 July. If you enjoy getting down and having a boogie on the dance floor, why not come along to the CHASE ‘NAIDOC 70s Disco Fever’ at Club Coffs Friday 6 – you will definitely see me there!

MICHAEL CROSSLAND ichael Crossland is no stranger to challenges and adversities, as I am sure most of you know. After visiting Haiti in January to build a school for over 100 children, helping to break the cycle and bring much needed hope and education into the lives of these innocent children he says, “I will never be the same … these children have nothing, no mum or dad, no food or water, not even a roof over their heads, yet to them in their hearts they have everything they need – and that is life itself.”

After his visit in January to a destroyed orphanage that broke his heart, he knew he needed to do something to help. After a successful fundraiser in Coffs Harbour, Michael and his best mate, Simon Odell, will be heading to Haiti in July to rebuild the orphanage and film a documentary about the journey and these little lives that will be changed forever.

ucked away in the Combine Street Reserve, the Community Garden is fast becoming a place where locals meet on a Sunday to grow fresh food, learn, relax and make new friends. Even during the cooler winter months, the garden is flourishing with a mouth-watering array of fresh vegetables.

Broad beans, snow peas, celery, silver beet and broccoli will soon be ready for the community gardeners to harvest!

The Coffs Community Garden is a not-forprofit organisation managed by a dedicated group of community gardeners. It is driven by a simple ethic: care of the earth, care of our people and sharing our surplus. It is one of the key projects of the Coffs Coast Local Food Alliance, which aims to promote a strong local food economy so that all residents of the Coffs Coast have equitable access to affordable, fresh, healthy food into the future.

Back in 2009, a small group of motivated locals got together and planted the idea of a community garden. The idea grew and, after many long hours of work and planning, a proposal to establish the Coffs Community Garden was submitted to Coffs Harbour City Council. The proposal was approved with overwhelming support from the community in 2010. The NSW State Government, through its Environmental Trust, also came on board providing a much needed grant to develop the Community Garden as part of the Local Food Futures Project.

Fast forward to 2012, and the Coffs Community Garden is now full steam ahead.

Communal gardening areas are shared by the community gardeners, all of whom enjoy the fruits (or vegies!) of their labour. Individual plots are also available for a small annual rental fee for those members wanting space to grow their own vegies, herbs or flowers. Being a community-based project, members are encouraged to assist in building their own plots before filling them to the brim with whatever they so desire! With plans for up to 40 plots, the Community Garden will be feeding plenty

of individuals and families into the future.

‘The Con’, as it is affectionately known, was formed back in 1984, and at that time offered music, drama and even some art classes.

These days, the Con specialises in top quality music tuition at its now permanent home at Bray Street Complex, right next door to the cinemas. There are twenty wonderfully talented music teachers on staff who offer a wide range of musical styles – from Folk to Jazz to Rock. The Con is not just for classical musicians and not just for accomplished players either. Many students are beginners, and quite a few are adults wanting to rekindle their childhood connections with music.

Playing music with friends is also a big part of the activities of the Con. Three guitar groups, a youth choir, two string groups, a brass and a wind group all feature in the weekly rehearsal schedule.

These groups all participated in the Coffs City Eisteddfod. Many prizes were won by Con groups and other students. The Con is truly a place where music lives!

e have been lucky enough to have a spot of gorgeous weather lately, but that chill is in the air. Winter is all about snuggly blankets, woolly jumpers and eating just a bit more than necessary! With lots of amazing local restaurants, clubs and cafés to choose from, how can we resist?

I love to cook, but I also love to feed people. If you come to our house, there is no way you are going to go hungry. Plumper, yes, but definitely NOT hungry! The Husband practically classes the word hungry as a swear word, and The Son (who loves to eat) doesn’t even know what it means! He arrives with his entourage, which consists of great big lolloping teenagers, mostly boys, who seem to be consistently hungry. I had a thought the other day that without this whole constant stream of food, what would happen? Could a reduction of delicious snacks be used as some kind of blackmail? (As I laugh, like a mother with a wicked idea.) I’ll get back to that later...

I recently attended The North Coast Wedding Workshop, staged by April Briscoe and Michaela Slater. This was the first of its kind in this area and was a huge success. The MC, Annie Blair, was dressed in a gorgeous long gown provided by Spurling Bridal and Formal Wear. I managed to slide out of there under the guise of being a social pages columnist with a goodie bag and a dish of delicious sample cakes from Modern Cake Creations. Before exiting with my stash, I was treated to a fabulous fashion parade and a glass of the bubbly kind. Guests of the day were given the opportunity to talk first hand with industry experts such as La Fleur D’Alyse, Special Occasions, Modern Cake Creations,

Fiasco Catering and Parrys Jewellers. The event covered everything needed to make your wedding a success and stand out from the rest.

If you fancy joining a group called The Gypsy Painters, you will be on the way to having a mighty fine time. This gathering of artists meets at the Guide Hall in Toormina on Thursdays, from 9am until 1pm. The group formed this year and have about 12 people on their books, with room for more! There are no joining fees, and even though there are no tutors, there are people who can help with many forms of art. The Gypsy Painters choose what they want to do and where.

Dressing up as a Gypsy is not compulsory, but they do it every now and again just for fun!

Got dolled up and attended the opening of the CHC Pharmacy at the new Specialist Medical Centre on the highway. We were greeted at the door by Mena Abdel Messih, Samuel Ledger and Lloyd Smith who, looking dapper in their Black Tie attire, were doing the meeting and the greeting. These gentlemen are the new Pharmacist Owners of CHC Pharmacy and were hosting the event to celebrate the opening their business. Allyson Schumer, the event’s organiser and owner/ manager of The Rainforest Café, provided the scrumptious cocktail food for the evening.

Allyson commented that this would be the first medical venue where regional doctors and nurses could meet with the business community of the Coffs Coast.

After Councillor Kerry Hines cut the ribbon and opened the event, guests were treated to musical entertainment and the added bonus of Moet et Chandon Champagne flowing freely throughout the night. The night was a huge success, with over 200 guests attending, including specialists, doctors and

supporters of this wonderful new venture.

Blush Makeup and Beauty Studio hosted a series of VIP make-up sessions presented by celebrity makeup artist, Nathan Kake.

Participants were given lessons in makeup application, pampered and given the opportunity to take home some gorgeous Napoleon Perdis products. Blush are introducing some exciting new services over the coming months, including lymphatic massage, so make sure you keep an eye on what they’re up to!

Left the house with two giant bags filled to the brim with jewells from Le Dãin Designs. Le Dãin had the pleasure of being a Major Launch Sponsor of The Manhattan Project, along with Emma Rhoades Photography and DarkLab. I was off to bejewell over twenty-five ladies for a photo shoot for the launch of this new venture, a project of Fiona Foulkes. The shoot was staged in a warehouse, where some of Coffs Coast’s most stylish women were made up by Sammy O’Brien from Beauty on the Promenade, adorned with jewells from Le Dãin Designs and photographed by Emma Rhoades Photography. Apart from the shoot, a short film was made to add to the promotional launch of the project. Sawtell Bowling Club will be having their Sawtell Festival Week of Social Bowls from 17 July - 28 July. This is the 10th anniversary of this event. Many of the players from

interstate come to enjoy the week’s events.

Apart from the sporting side, Thursday is Market Day, which includes craft stalls, raffles, book stalls, a money board and plenty more. While you are there, try a fabulous Chinese meal from the club’s restaurant ... a great dining experience for all the family these school holidays.

We attended the opening of a bigger and better My Sister’s Wardrobe store now located in Moonee Street, and the joint was packed. With her usual flair, she had set the scene, with her girls all dressed up vintage style. Elyan and her girls are an instant show wherever they go; that’s why they were such a hit at the recent 25th Wintersun Festival.

Le Dãin had the pleasure of adorning Elyan for the festival and all other events. Anyway, we all had a fabulous time at the launch.

Bubbles and canapés were served, and us ladies got to enjoy a little retail therapy. A great girlie night out.

Now, as I informed you before, I am definitely not Mother Hubbard – and my pantry is certainly not bare! But I once had tried to threaten both The Son, The Entourage and The Nieces with: “If you don’t help me with the chores, I am not filling up the pantry or even going shopping!” It doesn’t work! They know full well that like my great friend Leonie (she knows who she is), we have a little shopping issue. One can’t buy just one type of cheese ... it has to be ten! So if you are waiting to hear how I won this time, wait on ... I love to shop, cook and feed everyone. I hate the expression, but it’s a win-win situation, and no-one goes hungry!

This month’s guest on Collectors Cornercorner is Bruce collectors Thomas, a self confessed Bruce Thomas camera nut.

After being a press photographer for over 25 years, Bruce has collected as many as 400 unique cameras – some with an amazing history.

hat do you collect?

For a while, I pretty much collected any cameras made earlier than 1960, but over the last 3-4 years the ‘focus’ has been narrowed to Graflex and other large press cameras in general – in particular US military cameras. Some of these were especially made for the military. Others are basically off the shelf cameras,, but with a metal military plate attached showing the military designation, contract number, etc.

Some of them were issued to military photographers in heavy cased outfits (camera sets), which included not only the camera but film holders, flash units, tripod and manuals. A few of the manuals have not only detailed information on the use, service and repair of the camera, but also details on how to destroy it if the enemy was closing in.

How long have you been collecting for?

Roughly eight or nine years. I haven’t really been a lifelong collector of anything.

What prompted you to start collecting, and why cameras?

Probably being a press photographer for over 25 years got me interested in the press type cameras. It is hard to believe the skills the early photographers had both in terms of operating the equipment and the knowledge of chemicals used in the processing of the images. Everything was so slow and equipment was very large and heavy, so my hat is off to them. The cameras, of course, require no batteries to operate, so nearly all of them still work perfectly, even 50-100

years after they were made. Like old cars, they can be worked on with a large screwdriver and a hammer!

How did this hobby eventuate as a career in photography?

It was the other way round, really. I was a photographer long before I started collecting cameras and should make the effort to use them more.

How many pieces do you have in your collection?

These days it is around 200, although it was up to almost 400 at one stage. I’m slowly thinning the ranks and selling the cameras that I’m not concentrating on. That’s not always easy to do, but the numbers were getting a little out of hand according to my wife!

Where do you find all your cameras, and are they hard to source?

Most of the military cameras are bought on the big auction site in the US, as they are almost impossible to source within Australia. Other press type cameras are sourced from the UK, Germany and occasionally other countries, so I spend a small fortune on postage. It is the postage or courier charges that prevent me from collecting some of the really large WWII aerial cameras that I would love to own.

Is your collection still growing?

Yes, although a little slower these days. It’s getting more difficult to find cameras I want that I don’t have now, but the main thrill about collecting is the chase to get what you want. It does take a lot of searching, but every now and then something worthwhile comes along. Most of the cameras are so bulky that the physical room required is a limiting factor.

What makes YOUR collection so unique?

Probably the military slant. I don’t know of any other collectors in Australia that specialise in these types of camera.

Others have some military cameras in their collections, but haven’t quite got the variety.

My favourite is the 1915 Thornton Pickard Mk III Hythe machine gunners training camera, which is fitted with a film chamber and large lens instead of a gun barrel, so gunners in Sopwith Camels and similar WWI aircraft could hone their skills using film instead of bullets. Much safer.

Are you a member of any collectors and/or enthusiasts clubs?

Yes, I’m a member of the Coffs Harbour Collectors Club.

We meet at 7pm on the first Wednesday of every month at Novotel Pacific Bay Resort. There is a huge amount of collecting knowledge in that group, as nearly everyone collects something different. Our recent annual Collectors Fair held at the showground was a huge success this year, and it is amazing how many collectors are out there.

A desire to record his extensive travel experiences to far flung places around the world introduced primary school teacher Aaron to the joys of photography. The sometimes confronting cultural differences he found now form a permanent record through his unique images.

Aaron Verbruggen here did your passion for photography start?

I never owned a proper camera until two years ago. I lived overseas for two and a half years, where I spent about half the time travelling and the other half living in London. It was a combination of seeing some amazing sights and wanting to document them that made me interested in photography.

Are you self taught, or have you undergone any formal training?

I am definitely self taught. I have a few friends who have helped out along the way and given me some pointers on my photos, but it has been mostly a lot of trial and error ... continually changing the settings on my camera and seeing the effect it had on the photograph. I've taken so many out of focus or washed out photos along the way!

You have been fortunate enough to have travelled the world with your camera in hand. Tell us about some of your most recent journeys and the standout moments you've captured.

I spent some time in North and South America with a group of mates. We bought two vans in New York and managed to get one all the way across the states and through Central America to Panama. The other broke down and was left behind in Acapulco, Mexico.

We then travelled from Colombia to Brazil via Peru and Bolivia. In Peru we completed a five day 100 km trek to Machu Picchu; we also rode down the world's most dangerous road, El Camino De La Muerte in Bolivia, on bicycles.

My last trip was a solo trip from London to Australia via Turkey, Jordan, Iran and India. I was able to visit Petra and Wadi Rum in Jordan, and Persepolis, Shiraz and Isfahan in Iran.

I spent longer in India, beginning in Rajasthan before heading to Varanasi, Agra and New Delhi. After that I went north to the Punjab region and up into Kashmir. The people and lifestyle of India was just crazy. Poverty was so widespread, and such a huge percentage of people lived their lives in absolute squalor. I remember arriving at a train station in Varanasi in the middle of the night and taking a cycle rickshaw through the city to a hostel on the Ganges. On the way, I passed what seemed like a thousand homeless people curled up in every doorstep, rickshaw or gutter. It was definitely a confronting place.

You have taken a huge variety of images – landmarks, people and everything in between. What is your favourite thing to photograph, and why?

I definitely enjoy photographing local people wherever I go. Some of my favourite places are Middle Eastern or Arabic countries. Places like Jordan, Morocco, Egypt, Iran and Kashmir are completely different to any other parts of the world I've been to. People live so differently and look so different, and I loved getting a chance to photograph some of those people going about their daily lives. They were also so friendly and loved having 24 coffs coast focus.

They say that a picture tells a thousand words.

What are some of the stories behind the photos?

There are six photos from India. There is no backstory to any of them, because it is so easy to find a good photo in India. The colours of people's clothing and the things which go on daily in that country make each photo so different. The photo of the man in Srinigar, Kashmir under the arch took a long time to take. I saw the fort in the distance and made sure it was right between the arch, then I waited as this old man pushing his bicycle made his way down the road and passed me until he was right in the middle of the arch with the fort above him.

The photos from Jordan show exactly what the country is like. It is just a vast empty nation full of sand and rocks. Then in the south of the country, hidden in a deep valley is this amazing ancient city carved perfectly into the rock. The photo of Machu Picchu from a nearby mountain was a tough photo to take. It had been raining in the morning and fog was ruining the view. Then it lifted for a short time. The climb up the mountain was treacherous, but it was perfect to get a shot of the entire Incan city. We walked for days through jungles, across rivers, in the rain and up snow covered mountains to get there, but it was worth it.

The photo of me was taken in the grand canyon national park. During a huge 16,000 km road trip, my mates and I camped out in the national park. We climbed out onto a sheer rock face with our gas stove, and cooked breakfast as the sun rose over the canyon.

When you're composing a photo, do you start with a 'story' in mind, or do you photograph things simply because they look good?

I just go looking for things which seem interesting – if it doesn't interest me, I don't want to take the time taking the photo. Whether it is a famous landmark or a family walking in the street ... if I am at a place like the Taj Mahal, which has had its photo taken so many times, I try and look for something different ... a different angle, maybe some interesting lighting or some locals in the shot,to make it not just a photo of a famous building.

One of my favourite photos is one I took from Agra fort. There is a group of men viewing the Taj Mahal in the distance. It gives you a different and original perspective of the Taj Mahal.

In your opinion, what makes a good photo?

Something you've never seen before. Originality is sometimes hard to achieve, but if you can find a shot of something that no one has, it can make all the difference. That's why I enjoy photographing the

people in countries I visit. Whereas you know all the big famous buildings in the world, chances are you've never ever seen any of the people in the photos I have taken.

You work as a primary school teacher, but do you ever see a career for yourself in photography?

I love teaching and can see myself doing it for a long time. But if anyone wanted to pay me to travel the world and photograph it, I'm sure I wouldn't take too much convincing.

nfluenza is a severe viral infection that should not be mistaken for the common cold, affecting mainly the nose, throat and lungs. Symptoms of influenza include the sudden onset of high fever, aching muscles, headache, tiredness, non-productive cough, sore throat and sinus.

Every year, influenza causes an estimated 3,000 deaths in older people, nearly 300,000 doctor visits and around 18,000 people being admitted to hospital, in addition to the countless number of work days lost by local communities.

Vaccination is one of Australia’s key defences against this very serious virus, which claims the lives of millions worldwide every year, including young children.

But I had a vaccination a year or two ago; do I really need another Fluvax?

With the cooler seasons upon our doorstep and many people preparing to rug up for the winter, this is a question that I am asked almost daily in the community.

The answer is most definitely, yes! Every year the formulation of influenza vaccine changes, and these changes are determined by recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO), as to the three most harmful strains present that year. Current research also suggests that it can take a number of years (and repeated vaccinations) to gain proper protection from the different types of influenza virus, and this virus is always changing.

So who should be vaccinated?

Well, the short answer to that question is EVERYONE! Even those who are not in high risk groups should be vaccinated, not just to protect themselves, but also their families and other members of the community. Can you really afford a week or more off work with such a debilitating condition?

Everyone 65 years or older should have the flu vaccine. As well, at any age, you should be vaccinated if you have an ongoing 32 coffs coast focus.

Help stop the spread of influenza by always covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze, regularly sanitize your hands with an alcohol based hand sanitizer and employing the use of face masks, which should be changed regularly.

Nicole Bourne would love to hear from other families of children hild or any adults with limb deficiencies to start a local support network.

We share her story. e discovered at the 20 week scan that Lily had an absent left Radius bone and no thumb; they couldn’t see the right arm very well and were concerned about what they couldn’t see. We were then sent to John Hunter, where we had more scans and spoke to several specialists to confirm these details and discuss what the consequences might be. Quite often bilateral absent thumbs is part of a syndrome, most commonly a heart condition or a blood condition; – both of these being lifelong major medical issues.

Lily was delivered at 37 weeks because the placenta was failing. If she wasn’t delivered she would not have lived, as she wasn’t getting any food.

At the delivery she was checked over and it was found that the right thumb was also missing and more than likely the tip of her Radius bone. There was a small tag thumb, but nothing that would ever function well.

After 10 days in hospital, many scans, blood tests, and heart monitoring, nothing was found; we could finally go home.

Lily did have other issues; she was deaf in both ears for the first week and had no reaction to the hearing tests. By the end of 10 days and another hearing test, her left ear was fine, and the right ear was OK. Months later it would improve to almost perfect; she still continues to have a very small ear canal, which you can’t see into.

She was also born with double dislocated hips and spent 5 months in a Pavlik harness. She still continues

to be monitored, as her hips are not great.

Many specialists and appointments later for various things, at about 8 months we found out Lily did not have a spleen, which makes her susceptible to becoming sick easily and very quickly. We do have what I call a ‘fast pass’ through emergency.

After still more blood tests, they had found no syndrome that Lily was a part of, so it seems there was just a spontaneous birth defect. Lily is an IVF baby; there seems to be a higher rate of birth defects with IVF than natural conception.

At almost 2, Lily had her first operation at Westmead with Professor Tonkin, who is the leading Paediatric hand surgeon in Australia and one of the top 3 in the world. Her right Index finger was relocated to create a thumb, so she has 3 fingers and a thumb, which most people don’t notice. Her next operation is scheduled for 27 July, where they will straighten and pin her left hand; it sits at a 90 degree angle, because there is no radius to keep it straight. Then at some stage in the future, they will create a thumb on the left hand. It is also possible she will have another operation to correct her hips.

We would love to hear from other families of children or any adults with limb deficiencies, so our children will know they are not alone and so when new babies are born, the parents can have a network of people to call on for information and support.

Ryan O’Donnell’s been working as an undercover cop for so long he’s lost sight of who he really is. He doesn’t much like the man he’s become, but he can’t see a way to turn his life around.

Helene Young, aviator and award-winning author, is winging her way to Coffs Harbour Library this August to meet with readers. FOCUS asked Helene, also a friend and reading champion for the 2012 National Year of Reading, about her latest novel – Burning Lies.

What inspired it? Real life and amazing people from several years ago when my husband and I found ourselves caught in a wild bushfire and powerless to help, with no resources, no local knowledge and no training. The desperation of fire fighters and a community under threat remained vivid in my mind while writing some scenes. When investigators revealed the arsonist was a volunteer fire fighter, it made me want to explore the psyche of someone like that.

What is the major theme? The main theme is identity, or the loss of it through someone else’s actions. Burning Lies also touches on disempowerment, as well as the generation shaped by the tragedy of World War 2; people like my 90 year-old mum and those in The Tablelands, which was a staging post for troops during the war, where relics remain today.

Where do you write? Juggling a busy day job as senior Captain in Australia’s largest regional airline means I spend time in hotel rooms, so I’ve learnt not to be picky about my writing spot. Story telling is a compulsion, like a tap that’s impossible to turn off, so I write when and where I can.

Describe yourself in three words? Loyal, tenacious, generous.

What three things do you dislike?

Dishonesty, rubbish dropped on the beach, cleaning wooden blinds!

What three things do you like? Rain on an iron roof (I’m a Queenslander), burying my toes deep into soft sand, the view from the flight deck.

hat attracts you to working in disability employment?

There is nothing more motivating than to see someone secure employment, especially in the face of quite significant barriers.

Australia is one of the lowest ranked OECD (Organisation for the Economic Co-operation and Development) countries for employing people with a disability, and that’s driving government to look for organisations, like CHESS, with expertise in linking people with disabilities into work.

Why the focus on finding jobs for people with disabilities?

People who have disabilities are still people with skills and abilities who want to work. Quite often in the past, people have had to overcome their problems alone and as an organisation, we have smashed that practice.

When people are unable to work in our society, they feel shut out of the community and of little value. Research has shown us that working can be the best assistance to their own recovery, that they can contribute meaningfully in our economy and this can reduce health care costs to the community in the long term.

They need specialists, such as CHESS, to help them to overcome their barriers to work to instead become job-ready, to find employers willing to give them a go and to support their transition to work.

What if the barriers to work come from the jobseeker themselves?

Often they do.

Not all disabilities are as visible as a wheelchair, and people who have suffered episodes of anxiety, depression, eating disorders and other mental health conditions don’t see themselves as disabled and are too embarrassed to ask Centrelink to refer them to CHESS. You can imagine if someone has held down jobs before, particularly responsible jobs, they would want to conceal they have burntout in the past or suffered a mental health episode.

Why should they go to CHESS? They don’t know that a disability employment service like CHESS will have greater insight and understanding into finding them work that is ‘do-able’, suits their passions, and is meaningful work that enhances their wellbeing.

Sometimes these jobseekers are tertiary educated or highly experienced people with good career track records and references. They may have only been out of work for a short period of time and are keen to work. They are sensitive to being seen as a ‘failure’ or less than what they have achieved prior to having had a mental health episode.

Our business consultants will sit down with these ‘WHITE COLLAR’ candidates to identify what they would like to do and provide support similar to an executive recruitment agency to match them to employers.

They can be referred to CHESS, or they can contact us direct to see how we can assist them.

How do you know when they are ready to work?

Once a person takes responsibility for their mental health, then we consider them job-ready. They will be able to acknowledge their problem and its impact on others, as well as take their medication and see their medical practitioners regularly. They have insight into their mental wellbeing and are accountable for managing the impacts of their condition.

Where have you come from to lead CHESS? While I took over from the long-serving John Mandile as General Manager a year ago, I was already in CHESS in a HR role. Previously I was CEO of First Pacific Credit Union in Lismore.

What is it like to lead a not-for-profit company?

Just like in credit unions, which exist to serve their members, in not-for-profits there is no confusion about our focus or priority. We are there to service our clients, so we are never conflicted about the interests of external shareholders. We still need to be efficient and to focus on quality, and we need to make some profit to buffer against risk and fund future programs.

What attracted you to surf lifesaving?

I grew up in surf lifesaving, and I still like to do my patrols and occasionally compete in the master surf boats. When I was in the Ballina club, the biggest buzz was winning a silver medal in master surf boats at the Australian titles. I am now looking to join a local club.

Youth Directions invites all local high schools to participate in the Challenge to offer their students an opportunity to meet local chefs and learn first-hand about the realities of working in the industry.

Now in its fourth year, the Future Chef Challenge brings local experts into classrooms to share their knowledge and experience with students.

Students have several weeks to practice at home before the chef returns to the classroom to judge a live cook-off.

Students work individually or in teams to produce and plate a dish within a set time limit. Judging criteria include technique, hygiene, flavour and presentation. The winning cook/s receive/s a restaurant voucher sponsored by Youth Directions.

And so the timing of the Sawtell Chilli Festival could not be better!

On Saturday July 7 at 10 am, the 14th annual Sawtell Chilli Festival gets underway, and this year should be bigger and brighter than the very successful festivals of years past. The festival has certainly grown in reputation and attracts visitors to Sawtell from across the country. It has become a highlight on the winter calendar for many people.

This year, the Chilli Festival will showcase over 60 stalls, with many exhibiting chilli products and goods from across the world.

Along with the wonderful array of food and goods for sale from our visiting stall holders, the celebrated Sawtell ‘foodies’ will be presenting their own culinary treats and samples of the cuisine that has seen the village become renowned for great dining.

Sawtell is also known for its eclectic mix of boutiques and specialty stores, and these outlets will also be presenting their goods and services, with many Chilli Festival bargains to be found on the day. A shopper’s paradise as well!

thought I would share some important information from the REINSW about the announced changes in the NSW State Budget relating to first home buyers purchasing ‘new’ homes ... no doubt a plan to assist the ailing building industry.

1. What is the First Home Owner Grant (New Home) scheme?

The First Home Owner Grant (New Home) Scheme provides a grant of $15,000 to help eligible first home buyers to purchase or build a new home. It will replace the current $7,000 First Home Owner Grant from 1 October 2012.

2. When does it apply?

The grant of $15,000 applies to eligible transactions entered into on or after 1 October 2012 and before 1January 2014. The grant will then be reduced to $10,000 from 1 January 2014, with no end date set.

3. What is an eligible transaction?

An eligible transaction is: (a) a contract made on or after 1 October 2012 for the purchase of a new home in New South Wales, or (b) a comprehensive home building contract made on or after 1 October 2012 by the owner of the land in New South Wales or a person who will on completion of the contract be the owner of land in New South Wales, to have a home built on it, or the building of a home in New South Wales by the owner builder if the building work commences on or after 1 October 2012.

4. What is a new home?

A new home is a home that has not been previously occupied or sold as a place of residence, and includes a home that is a substantially renovated home and a home built to replace demolished premises.

5. What is a substantially renovated home?

A substantially renovated home is a renovated home: (a) that is new residential premises within the meaning of section 40-75(1)(b) of the A New Tax System (Goods and Services Tax) Act 1999 of the Commonwealth, and (b) that, as renovated, has not been previously occupied or sold as a place of residence. Under that legislation, `substantial renovations’ of a building are defined as renovations in which all, or substantially all, of a building is removed or replaced. The renovations may, but need not, involve the removal or replacement of foundations, external walls, interior supporting walls, floors, roof or staircases.

6. What is a home built to replace demolished premises?

A home is a home built to replace demolished premises if: (a) the home is a new residential premises within the meaning of section 40-75(1) (b) of the A New Tax System (Goods and Services

Tax) Act 1999 of the Commonwealth, and (b) the home, as built to replace the demolished premises, has not been previously occupied or sold as a place of residence, and (c) the owner of the home did not occupy the demolished premises as a place of residence before they were demolished.

7. Does the price of the home need to be under a limit to receive the First Home Owner Grant (New Home)?

Yes, effective from 1 October 2012 the First Home Owner Grant (New Home) Scheme is capped to $650,000. The grant will only be available for properties with a total value not exceeding that amount.

8. How is the Total Value of the home calculated?

For a contract of sale of a home, the total value is based on the greater of the following: • the consideration for the eligible transaction • the unencumbered value, as at the commencement date of the eligible transaction.

For a comprehensive home building contract, the total value is calculated by adding together: • the consideration for the eligible transaction, and • the value, at the commencement date, of the relevant interest of the land on which the home is to be built. For a building of a home by an owner builder, the total value is calculated by adding together: the unencumbered value of the home, at the date the transaction is completed and the value, at the date the transaction is completed, of the relevant interest in the land on which the home is built. The value of the relevant interest in the land on which the home is to be built is the greater of the following: • the consideration paid or payable for the interest • the unencumbered value of the interest.

9. From October 2012 do I get a grant if I buy an existing home?

No, from 1 October 2012, the First Home Owner Grant will only be payable on the purchase of new homes. The $7,000 First Home owner Grant is still available for purchases of existing homes entered into before 1 October 2012.

10. Does the First Home Owner Grant (New Home) apply to replacement contracts entered into on or after 1 October 2012?

A contract for the sale or transfer is not eligible if: (a) it replaces an agreement made before 1 October 2012, and (b) the replaced contract is for the sale or transfer of substantially the same property.

11. Can I get the First Home Owner Grant and the $5,000 New Home Grant?

If you receive the First Home Owner Grant, you cannot receive the $5,000 New Home Grant for the same property.
