A message from FOCAL: After two years of the FOCAL virtual awards ceremonies, it is great to be back live and inperson to celebrate the 19th Annual FOCAL International Awards. Since their inception in 2004, the FOCAL International Awards have championed creativity, integrity, and sustainability in screen culture. The inaugural Awards were created to reward the often-unrecognised skills of archive and preservation professionals, with 10 awards being presented across various production categories and personnel working in the audiovisual industry. Over the years we have seen a huge increase in the appetite for archivedriven biographies and alternative narratives, major streaming platforms such as Netflix, Disney, Amazon are becoming more engaged with archive-based productions. Today the FOCAL International Awards are honouring 61 shortlisted nominees across 15 award categories. This is the highest number of nominees since we began the awards in 2004. 39% of the submissions we received were from UK, 33% from the USA, 23% from Europe and 5% from the rest of the world. Alongside FOCAL’s Mentoring Programme launched in 2022, aimed to help and provide guidance to people willing to grow a career in all areas of the archive industry, we are delighted to continue to work with the National Film and Television School who took part in the Student Jury Award for Most Inspiring Use of Archive. In addition, this year we decided to invite international students to take part. We were so pleased INA Sup, France accepted, which gave an interesting discussion to the shortlist nominations hearing the different viewpoints between the UK and France schools. We would like to thank all our jurors; the 2022 Awards received a wide variety of submissions making it a challenging but rewarding deliberation process for our dedicated jurors across the globe; a testament to the continuing and growing power of archival storytelling. A huge thank you to all our Awards sponsors, without your support we would not be able to hold the Awards, not forgetting the companies who gave up their time to help us prepare for tonight’s event. The last two years have been a difficult time for everyone as we learnt to deal and work under intense conditions regarding the COVID pandemic. Whether you work in an archive library, production company, are a researcher, archive producer or a service provider, thank you for all your continued dedication and exceptional hard work to ensure this industry keeps going. We hope you enjoy the night – this is a celebration of your work. The FOCAL International Lifetime Achievement Award 2022: Bríd Dooley The FOCAL International Lifetime Achievement Award is gifted by the FOCAL International executive board to an individual who has contributed to and supported the audio-visual archive industry within their career and through the body of their work. We are delighted to announce that the 2022 recipient is Head of Archives and Library services at RTÉ, Bríd Dooley. Bríd Dooley has dedicated her entire professional career spanning over 30 years to audiovisual archives. A graduate of the University of Westminster, she first worked in the ITN Archives in London before moving to GMTV. After returning to Ireland, she joined the Irish National Public Service Broadcaster, RTÉ, to lead the station’s television archive project of 2000, before being appointed as Head of Archives and Library services in 2003. Bríd paved the way for the professional development of a modern digital archive by launching a series of strategies to ensure the long-term future of the collections and services. The ambition would be benchmarked against best international practice. Bríd was instrumental in creating a vibrant sales and licensing service, while in parallel pioneering a major project to deliver public access through online curation of the broadcast archives. Today the RTÉ Archives website connects with up to 4million visitors annually. From the outset, Bríd recognised that creating a global network to inform the transformation, of RTÉ’s Archive was essential. This was achieved by active participation in the International Federation of Television Archives – FIAT/IFTA - and by connecting with the footage industry represented by FOCAL International. Bríd served two terms as General Secretary of FIAT/IFTA from 2006 - 2012, during which time she fostered stronger co-operation and dialogue within the CCAAA, Coordinating Council of Audiovisual Archive Associations. She has been an active leader in devising the annual UNESCO World Day for Audiovisual Heritage.
She was an early promoter of the Save Your Archive initiative of FIAT/IFTA founded in London in 2012, which has since gone on to support a wide range of projects for global endangered archives. Bríd has continued to champion this initiative by partnering with industry to create more opportunities to keep the flame alight and safeguard at-risk world audiovisual heritage. During her two terms as President of FIAT/IFTA from 2016-2020, she led the organisation with a renewed focus on revitalising the network and its mission, creating exciting and engaging conferences and knowledge sharing seminars. She also redesigned the annual FIAT/IFTA Awards to recognise and showcase the professionalism and expertise of audiovisual specialists, a highlight of its annual conferences. Over the past decade she has led and promoted a strategy to fund and deliver a major digitisation project at RTÉ. She is currently leading a programme of change management as part of RTÉ’s overall digital transformation to create a state-of-the-art integrated digital archive service for all stakeholders. The world of audio-visual archive is one of constant innovation and change. Bríd continues to seek out opportunities to further collaborate and partner with cultural heritage and industry bodies at home and abroad and is currently serving as a member of the supervisory board of the Europeana Foundation. Bríd remains determined to ensure that audiovisual collections, and especially broadcast archives are championed, so that their precious content will be available for future generations as a valuable cultural resource and an essential component of the media sector in the creation of new and exciting stories.

This award recognises the vital work being carried out to safeguard the world’s shared media heritage and the efforts undertaken to present this heritage to the 21st Century audiences through the careful adoption of contemporary technologies.
L’A v v e n t u r a
Production Company: Cinematographique Lyre Partners: Cinématographique Lyre, L’immagine Ritrovata (Bologna, Italy), Hiventy (Joinville-le-Pont, France), L.E. Diapason (Paris, France). Archival Highlights: In our opinion, restoration is as collaborative as the original production of a Film may have been. Thus, we were very keen and happy to reproduce, with our technical partners, the spirit of collaboration between France and Italy that gave birth to L’AVVENTURA in 1960. The evolution of technology in the very last few years and the level of expertise reached by each of our technical partners – three of the very best in the world, coming from France and Italy – ensured that the project would result in a truly unique, never-before-seen quality rendition of the full Cannes Version of Antonioni’s work of art. To this day, L’Avventura remains one of Cinema’s most outstanding films and it is a pleasure to present to all audiences, young and not so young, this 4K restoration which captures like never before the beauty of the images and the haunted quality of the soundtrack.
Sambizanga
Production Company: L’Immagine Ritrovata Partners: Cineteca di Bologna, The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project at L’Image Retrouvée (Paris) in association with Éditions René Chateau and the family of Sarah Maldoror. Archival Highlights: Trapped in a web of legal disputes that made it inaccessible for almost two decades, the restoration of Sambizanga took three years to be completed. During this time we tragically lost Sarah Maldoror, one of the very first woman pioneers in the history of cinema, a poet and a free filmmaker. In the words of her daughter, Annouchka De Andrade :”This film is also the story of a political awakening. The protagonist’s continual displacement is also Sarah’s, and it defines women in the African diaspora”. Restoring Sambizanga entailed making sure that the beauty but also the fragility of this film was respected, that the film was not over-restored, that the grading could bring back the lights, the colors and the tragedy of the battle.
Celestial’s Shaw Brothers Collection: King Boxer Production Company: L’Immagine Ritrovata SRL Partners: Arrow Films in collaboration with National Film Archive in Hong Kong, L’Immagine Ritrovata in Hong Kong/Bologna and R3Store Studios in London Archival Highlights: All the materials were digitized 2K and restored in 2K. Each film restored was sourced from the original camera negatives held at the National Film Archive in Hong Kong. The soundtracks were sourced from the original sound negatives (the vast majority of these titles included soundtracks recorded for Mandarin, Cantonese, and English), with separate main and end title picture sections for each, altogether a lot of material to assemble and keep track of.
