DRAMA JAWS

April Boyd, Head of Drama Prince of Wales Island International School, Malaysia

On Thursday 20th September to Sunday the 23rd September, POWIIS hosted the FOBISIA Drama JAWS (Job Alike Workshops) with a total of 19 International Schools attending with 21 drama teachers.

The event commenced with a drama executive committee meeting on Thursday, 19 September followed by two and a half days of professional development and sharing best practice amongst drama teachers across Asia. The delegates from the international schools stayed at the Olive Tree Hotel in Bayan Baru.

The days were jam packed with numerous theatre workshops exploring various theatre practitioners, techniques and skills which were discussed, analysed and reviewed on how they could be implemented into drama lessons for all ages. Topics ranged from: using music within drama; how to maximize grades in IGCSE and A level, practically and written; creative ways to teach practitioners; innovative ways to devise; using technology to inform students’ performance decisions; nurturing independence within drama; and using rewards effectively to stimulate and engage students within lessons.

The evenings had a range of social events for the attendee drama teachers from visiting the Tree Monkey, Holy Guacamole and Ferringhi Gardens.

As drama teachers here at POWIIS we are proud to have hosted such an informative event where a collaborative and supportive environment encouraged ideas, knowledge and experience to be shared.

Many of the teachers that attended this event will be returning to POWIIS in late February and early March for the FOBISIA Drama Festival, where we will be hosting the ‘jaw’ stopping event, which will be remembered for years to come.

MEDIA STUDIES JAWS Amanda Kirsop, Head of English and Media Traill International School

On October 5th and 6th Media Studies teachers from FOBISIA schools came together for the JAWS event hosted by Amanda Kirsop from Traill International School. The eight participating attendees from countries including Malaysia, Hong Kong and Brunei joined forces for two days of inspiring workshops.

Media Studies is a relatively small subject throughout international schools so this was excellent CPD opportunity that we all really appreciated. Each attendee delivered a different session focusing on an aspect of teaching and learning.

It was a brilliant two days that was packed with obtaining new resources, collaborating with one another and sharing ideas and knowledge around the subject.

PE and Sport in International Schools Job Alike Workshop Jerudong International School Brunei Friday 9th-10th November 2018 This Job Alike Workshop is an opportunity for FOBISIA Secondary PE Jaws teachers across the region to get together to share good practice and new ideas about the teaching of PE. All participants will be actively engaged in creating the agenda to ensure that the two day event meets the needs and wishes of those attending. ​All sessions will be delivered by those participating in the workshop.

Some initial ideas for session topics are listed below: ● ● ● ●

Individualising Learning in Physical Education A4L - Assessing without levels Differentiation Using ICT in Physical Education

How to use all of the above to give students ownership of their learning.

The above sessions are merely suggestions and it is hoped that the agenda will evolve based on the experience and interests of those attending. A Google Drive Folder will be shared with all delegates to build the agenda collaboratively as well as sharing resources in the run up to this event.

The key objectives and aims of the JAWS are to support FOBISIA schools in the development of sustainable, multidisciplinary and exciting STEAM projects and curriculums, at both Junior and Senior school levels.

The workshop will look beyond the acronym of STEAM and aims to help teachers to develop their own projects and curriculum that suit the needs of their students and within their context. Every participant will gain useful and practical ideas to help to nurture, cultivate and enhance the necessary skills for our students to excel within this field.

During the Job Alike Workshop (JAWs) there will be an opportunity to network with teachers from other FOBISIA schools to share excellent practice across Middle Leadership roles. Primarily, this JAWS is targeted at experienced, current, Middle Leaders yet content would prove extremely useful, and positively challenging, for aspiring Middle Leaders.

Hosts This is a co-hosted JAWs event: the Friday will be held at Sri KDU and the Saturday will be held at The British School of Kuala Lumpur (BSKL). Programme coordinators: Andrew Wyeth (Sri KDU) and Aidan Edmanson (BSKL).

Programme There is an expectation that all attendees actively participate throughout the two days and so the full agenda will be completed once all of the delegates are registered. Likewise, once there is a final list, all participants will be contacted and given the opportunity to lead certain workshop sessions.
