ACTIVITY GUIDE WINTER 2026

WELCOME TO FNSB PARKS & RECREATION Dear Residents and Visitors, Welcome to the Winter Activity Guide for the Fairbanks North Star Borough. Winter is simply a way of life here in Interior Alaska. While the cold and dark can be challenging, they also create opportunities to get outside and enjoy experiences that make our community unique. Whether you're skiing on local trails, skating with friends, attending a community event, or trying something new this season, there are plenty of ways to make the most of winter. Our Parks and Recreation staff work year-round to create opportunities for people of all ages to stay connected and engaged. We believe recreation plays an important role in bringing communities Parks and Recreation Director together and improving quality of life, especially during the winter months.
Matthew Boyer
I encourage you to look through this guide and find something that interests you. Maybe it's a favorite activity you've enjoyed for years, or maybe it's something you've never tried before. Either way, I hope you'll get out and take advantage of all the opportunities available throughout the borough. Thank you for your continued support of Parks and Recreation. I look forward to seeing you out enjoying another Fairbanks winter. Sincerely, Matthew Boyer Director of Parks and Recreation

WHICH SWIM OPTION IS FOR ME? Aquacise is a 45-minute, low impact exercise class led by a Borough instructor that uses water resistance to raise heartrate. Wescott offers deep water aquacise, while Mary Siah provides shallow water aquacise. Lap Swim is swimming from one end of the pool to the other, often used for conditioning. All ages are welcome, but all participants must swim laps. Open swim is available to all ages and skill levels for unstructured pool use. Children age 6 and under must be accompanied by an adult (16+) in the water. Children ages 7–8 must have an adult present in the building, while those age 9 and older may participate without adult supervision. Family Swim requires one parent or guardian in the water with children 17 and under. Family swim is often limited to shallow water only. There are no slides running during family swim at Wescott. Water Walking is a self-led, low-impact cardio exercise. Floatation belts and barbells are available for use. Adult Swim (18+) (Mary Siah) Currently we are not offering adult swim until we have more staff. Check back throughout the winter. Two lanes are set-aside for lap swimming while the remainder of the pool is for water walking or other exercise.

BIG DIPPER ICE ARENA
OUTDOOR ICE RINKS
The Big Dipper Ice Arena, commonly referred to as "The Dipper," hosts public skating, figure skating, youth and adult hockey, and is the home of the Fairbanks Ice Dogs. A walking track is available and free to the public during scheduled hours. Once an airplane hangar in Tanacross, the structure was reassembled and repurposed, through the volunteer efforts of Hez Ray, as an ice arena in Fairbanks in 1968. Most areas of the facility, including the ice, are available for private rentals and events.
There are three outdoor ice rinks on the north side of the Big Dipper Ice Arena. As the weather cools, staff start building ice by spraying water on the rinks in thin layers. When it’s thick enough they complete the installation with the Zamboni. The rinks are reservable but are generally available for drop in use any time of day. The outdoor rinks are kept in great shape but are not maintained at the same level as the indoor rink. There are lights that can be turned on outside the rink for morning and evening use. If you need more info ask at the Dipper Skate Room.

Weather outside too frightful? The Big Dipper has an indoor walking track on the second floor of the building. There is no fee for walking at the Dipper, but we do ask that walkers sign in at the skate room. Please note that the walking is directional--clockwise on some days and counterclockwise others. There are arrows by the steps that will let you know which direction is the direction of the day. Strollers welcome!

GROOMED SKI TRAILS
Think before you sink! Breaking through the surface of groomed trails leaves holes and ruts which freeze and make conditions dangerous or unpleasant, and future grooming challenging. Use appropriate tire width and inflation. Wear snowshoes. Avoid fresh, soft snow. Wait for conditions to improve!

WHO HAS THE RIGHT OF WAY? When on trails, look for signs like the one featured here to know who has the right of way. Generally, motorized vehicles yield to everyone. Bikers yield to those traveling slower or with animals. Those on foot yield to skiers. Those on foot and skiers yield to those with animals. A good rule of thumb is to yield to those in least control.
