D

uval County probably welcomed its 1 millionth resident in the early hours of June 17, 2020. Or thereabouts. That’s not scientific, but it is based on U.S. Census Bureau numbers as of April 1, 2020, and the bureau’s estimate of 1,016,809 for 2021. The Florida Legislature Office of Economic and Demographic Research updated its county statisical profiles Dec. 16. Doing the math from those shows it might not have taken long for Duval to reach 1 million people after its population of 995,567 on Census Day 2020. Between then and the estimate for 2021, Duval County added about 58 people a day during that year, taking into account births, deaths, residents

moving in and those leaving. That number would include those who moved to the state during and after the COVID-19 pandemic that started in March 2020, as well as those who died during the time. If more numbers are of interest, the projection for 2022 was 1,033,533 almost 46 people a day for those previous 12 months. Duval could see a population of 1,076,935 in 2025 and, a quarter century after that, 1,278,118 by 2050. We report about the significance of the 1 million landmark in today’s issue.
