Fay

Continued from front page

Fay, 50, joined the Jacksonville office from New York in 2014 to run operations for the Corporate and Investment Bank and his role expanded. Deutsche Bank’s Jacksonville operation is the Germany-based financial services company’s second largest U.S. presence after New York. A CRITICAL LOCATION

Deutsche Bank considers its Jacksonville operation to be a microcosm of its New York office with every business and infrastructure division represented. “There is no doubt the Jacksonville location for Deutsche Bank is a critical location from our global strategy perspective,” Fay said. The company occupies two campuses along Gate Parkway. It first moved in 2008 into the 200,000-square-foot, fivebuilding Meridian Business Park at 5022 Gate Parkway, eventually filling that. Last year it leased a 150,000-square-foot, threestory office building nearby at 5201 Gate Parkway. Together, the two sites comprise 350,000 square feet of office space, making Deutsche Bank one of the city’s largest office tenants. The Deutsche Bank campuses have capacity to reach a headcount of 2,800 in Jacksonville, although there is no timeframe for that goal as the bank hires as needs arise. The current 180 openings are across the operations with a focus on building Deutsche Bank’s Anti-Financial Crime Compliance team and its Client & Data Services team. Fay said he has been actively involved with the Client & Data Services team and is focusing on becoming more familiar with the compliance team.

FOCUS ON JACKSONVILLE

Slover also led Deutsche Bank’s Cary, North Carolina, operation. Fay said he will focus exclusively on Jacksonville. His years with the New York operation provided him the opportunity to move functions from there to Jacksonville. “I was pretty familiar with the local market. Seeing it firsthand, I’ve become quite a supporter,” he said. Jacksonville’s market has been able to support most of Deutsche Bank’s growth areas the past several years, he said. “The talent pool has been very good,” Fay said, crediting area schools and universities, especially the University of North Florida, for “quality graduates.” “We’ve been quite satisfied

not only with the graduates, but also the population that exists in the market for existing personnel,” he said. “Overall, it’s a very positive story.” Fay serves on the Business Advisory Council of the UNF Coggin College of Business. He will continue being active in the community through the company’s employee resource groups such as multicultural, pride and next-generation groups. “These are groups that help us grow,” he said. Deutsche Bank also remains committed to its community contributions through social investments, cultural enhancements and partnerships with local organizations and educational initiatives. Year-to-date, Deutsche Bank has filled 400 Jacksonville positions through new hires and internal moves. Fay said the 5201 Gate Parkway building provided capacity for expansion. “That created some runway, some breathing room for us to grow further,” he said. Fay said he continues to work with Deutsche Bank’s global operations for growth opportunities. “The immediate view is let’s fill the 180 we have open,” he said. The Anti-Financial Crime Compliance and the Client & Data Services teams “are areas that we feel we should grow in

to protect the bank in a more effective manner and essentially ensure we are supporting our U.S. businesses and U.S. clients.” Candidates can visit db.com/ careers/index_e.html for job postings. CITY MODEL FOR COMPANY

On a visit in August 2016, Deutsche Bank CEO John Cryan said he saw Jacksonville’s role as strong within the global bank’s footprint. “This Jacksonville site is a role model for how we at Deutsche Bank should be running our business globally,” he said. Cryan said under the leadership of Slover and Mike Drexler, the Jacksonville operation integrated well within the community. Drexler is Deutsche Bank’s head of Corporate & Investment Banking, Florida. “All of our people statistics here are better than elsewhere. Job satisfaction is higher, retention rates are higher, mobility is great,” Cryan said. Deutsche Bank opened in Jacksonville in 2008 with 100 employees. With four incentives packages from the city and state, the company has added thousands more. Deutsche Bank does not run a retail bank in Jacksonville. Instead, the Southside operation has evolved from a single function operation center to a multidivisional regional office like a micro-

UberEATS food delivery service launches in Jacksonville European Street, which lost its San Marco restaurant to flooding, hopes service can help fill revenue gap. By David Cawton Staff Writer When Andy Zarka arrived at his European Street Café location in San Marco days after it was flooded by Hurricane Irma, he knew it was going to be a long time before it would open again. “I was shocked honestly,” said Zarka, an owner. “I didn’t see the actual flooding, but the silt left behind told the whole story.” Antiques and decor that adorned the restaurant at 1704 San Marco Blvd. for 20 years were gone, as was his busy lunch and happy hour crowd. Zarka has focused on his three other locations while the restoration process begins. He said his regular customers have followed, too. “It’s good to see those familiar faces,” he said. “Everyone knows it could’ve happened to any of our locations, so we’re happy our regular crowd continues to support us.” One thing that he said will help make up for the loss in revenue is UberEATS, the food delivery service he’s using. It’s an offshoot of multibillion dollar ride-hailing company Uber, which launched in Jacksonville on Thursday. The service, which runs 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily, already has service contracts with more than 100 local restaurants, according to UberEATS Florida General Manager Juan Pablo Restrepo. He was in Jacksonville on Thursday to launch the ser-

vice and to announce a $25,000 donation to the First Coast Relief Fund that’s helping with Irma cleanup. “We are going through a massive expansion,” Restrepo said. “We’re operating in 150 cities around the world, and 60 of those are in the U.S.” He said UberEATS plans to be in 100 U.S. cities by the end of the year. In 2013, Jacksonville was Uber’s first Florida city, but the food delivery service is not. The company instead focused on efforts in Miami, Tampa, Orlando, Gainesville and Tallahassee. UberEATS will cover the Beaches, most of South Jacksonville, San Marco, Riverside, Downtown, and Northwest Jacksonville inside the Interstate 295 beltway. That is good for Zarka, who has restaurants in those parts of town. Customers pay a $4.99 delivery fee, but a $5-off promotional code is available to new users. Restrepo said the service also shares some information it col-

lects from customers with its restaurant partners, “reviews and things like that to help them figure out how to optimize their delivery service.” “It’s going to expose our brand to thousands of people who may not want to come in or for some reason just want to sit at home and enjoy a meal,” Zarka said. He said the initial demo work and cleanup at the San Marco restaurant, which closed days before Irma hit Jacksonville, is wrapping up. The renovation process will take much longer. “I’d say four months is a good estimate right now,” he said. For now, he’s moving staff to his other locations with some focused on handling the to-go orders. “The timing could not have been better with the other store shut down,” he said about UberEATS. “It’s keeping us going.” dcawton@jaxdailyrecord.com @DavidCawton (904) 356-2466

Stein Mart

Indoor skydiving facility should be open by October 2018. From staff A spokeswoman for iFly said by email Thursday that the iFLY Jacksonville location is now confirmed. That comes after a July 18 statement by Sky Entertainment LLC Managing Partner Chester Schwartz that his group signed a contract the previous Friday for 2.5 acres for development of a $10 million to $12 million iFLY project, an indoor skydiving venue. He said then that iFLY, which would be south of Topgolf along Interstate 295, should be

completed by October 2018. Sky Entertainment representatives Duke Addison and Amanda Kinkade with Addison Commercial Real Estate Inc. said in July the land sale should be completed early next year. They also said that Sky Entertainment doesn’t need the entire site and would market 1.4 acres for another entertainment or restaurant user. Schwartz said iFLY would be 60 feet tall. IFLY, based in Austin, Texas, calls itself “the experiential entertainment company that created modern indoor skydiving.” It developed technology that creates a wall-to-wall air cushion generated by giant fans in a flight chamber.

parts. Hawkins said a million cars in the Houston area alone were damaged by Hurricane Harvey and will have to be replaced or repaired. Texas and Florida, which saw a statewide impact from Hurricane Irma, are Stein Mart’s two biggest markets. Hawkins said it’s too early to see if sales are bouncing back in those states as residents recover. While hurricane-related spending might help the overall numbers, apparel sales have been flat and department store sales dropped 4.2 percent in the first half of this year, he said. One ongoing trend hurting retailers is a shift in consumer discretionary spending away from goods to “experiences,” such as travel, he said. Consumer spending used to be more evenly divided between goods and services, but data shows spending on services has risen from 54 percent three decades ago to 68 percent now, Hawkins said. “That’s one of the things we’re really struggling with,” he said. Of course, the trend that has grabbed everyone’s attention is consumers making more purchases online. “Now you have the phenomenon of people not wanting to go to the mall,” Hawkins said.

Stein Mart has been revamping its stores to make them more attractive to shoppers. The preference for “stress-free shopping” has nearly caught up with finding “a good deal.”

Survey data shows consumers like an easy shopping experience almost as much as they like to find bargains. The percentage of consumers who consider “stress-free shopping” a major factor in their shopping preference has grown from 53 percent in 2014 to 61 percent this year, he said. Meanwhile, the percentage preferring a “good deal” has slipped from 64 percent to 62 percent. Stein Mart has been trying to increase sales through its website but like all retailers, it faces difficult competition from Amazon.com.

“They have set a bar for those of us in e-commerce that makes it hard to compete,” Hawkins said. “We’re in it (e-commerce) and it's growing like a weed. But it's got to be profitable for you,” he said. Hawkins said he’s confident that traditional retail will make a comeback, but it will take some time. “It’s tough out there in retail,” he said. “We remain optimistic at Stein Mart.” mbasch@jaxdailyrecord.com

Mayor Curry touts public safety spending in city’s new budget

DEVELOPMENT TODAY

Millions for more police officers, two new fire stations.

CHURCH, OTHER RELIGIOUS Trinity Baptist Church of Jacksonville, 800 Hammond Blvd., contractor is Chastain Contracting Co., alteration of wall type, $8,000.

By David Cawton Staff Writer Mayor Lenny Curry reaffirmed Thursday that his $1.273 billion budget, which City Council approved Tuesday, is a step toward improving public safety. “We all work together for the same cause and are like-minded in how we keep our city safe,” said Curry, who was joined by Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams, State Attorney Melissa Nelson and Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department Chief Kurt Wilson. Curry’s budget includes $410 million for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office that increases the employee cap by 100 sworn officers, a point of contention for some Northwest Jacksonville council members seeking more accountability from the JSO. “I would disagree that there’s no accountability,” Williams said. “Police misconduct and staffing are two different issues.” Included in the budget is $1 million for the construction of a Crime Gun Intelligence Center. “It will allow JSO’s detectives, ATF’s agents and our prosecutors to work together in a space in order to address gun violence,” Nelson said. The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department budget includes money to build two fire stations and hire 42 additional firefighters.

Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department Chief Kurt Wilson, Mayor Lenny Curry, Sheriff Mike Willams and State Attorney Melissa Nelson talk Thursday about the public safety aspects of the new city budget.

JFRD Chief Kurt Wilson said the stations will help reduce call volume. “Call volumes are through the roof,” said Wilson of the St. Johns Town Center and Argyle Forest areas. The fire stations are being built on city property at Interstate 295 and Baymeadows Road, and at Old Middleburg and Collins roads. The department’s $217 million budget includes millions for new and upgraded equipment. “Much of the JFRD equipment was outdated,” Curry said. “We need to make sure when these men and women put their lives on the line, they have the best stuff to keep them safe as well,” he said. KIDS HOPE ALLIANCE

Also Thursday, Curry announced his administration would reintroduce legislation creating the new Kids Hope Alliance, an organization that could

replace the Jacksonville Journey and Jacksonville Children’s Commission next year. “Since our original legislation, we’ve had an opportunity to continue our work with various community partners and groups to gain valuable input,” Curry said in a news release. The legislation also adds what the mayor calls “essential services.” Mental health, behavioral health, emotional health and physical disability programming will be added to the early learning category. The legislation calls for a seven-member board appointed by the mayor and confirmed by council. The legislation will be introduced Monday by District 4 council member Scott Wilson and would take effect Jan. 1 if approved. dcawton@jaxdailyrecord.com (904) 356-2466
