Honoring the city’s ‘billboard buster’
San Pablo on tap for Florida Cracker Restaurant Florida Cracker Restaurant, an extension of the Florida Cracker Kitchen in Brooksville, is in development at Pablo Station at northwest Beach Boulevard and San Pablo Road. Robert Tilka, vice president of strategy with ServStar Management Group, said today it will serve breakfast and lunch and is the first Florida Cracker in Jacksonville. He said about 10 are possible through franchising throughout Florida. He said sites have been scouted for the next two or the in Northeast Florida. Tilka said there is no firm opening date for the Pablo Station location, but said it could be within 45 days. “It’s a great concept,” he said. Mathis

Attorney Bill Brinton, a warrior in fight against billboards and visual blight, now in battle against lung cancer By Max Marbut Associate Editor On Wednesday during a tribute to attorney Bill Brinton and his nationally recognized reputation as an advocate for scenic beauty and against visual blight, attorney Hank Coxe described Brinton as “one of those people who are capable of jousting at windmills.” Those “windmills” of seemingly insurmountable odds have included, Coxe said, billboard control, term limits for local elected officials and how
the city handles Human Rights Commission nominations. “Now, he’s jousting with another windmill,” Coxe added, referring to Brinton undergoing treatment for advanced lung cancer. Brinton, 64, was honored at a luncheon at the Main Library Conference Center attended by about 300 people. The event also celebrated the 30th anniversary of Scenic Jacksonville, the local all-volunteer nonprofit affiliate of Scenic America that promotes preservation and beautification.
Guests included city officials, members of the legal community and advocates for protecting Jacksonville’s natural scenic character. “It’s nice to see a room full of people who understand and appreciate what Bill has done,” said Ronald Fleming, urban planner and board chairman of Scenic America, who came to Jacksonville from Cambridge, Mass., to honor Brinton. Laura Street Trio project advances to City Council By David Cawton Staff Writer With the go-ahead from the Downtown Investment Authority, plans to redevelop the Laura Street Trio and Barnett Bank building can move to City Council for review. On Wednesday, the DIA awarded development rights to Laura Street LLC in advance of a new agreement to overhaul the site. The land includes the trio of buildings on North Laura Street between Forsyth and Adams streets, along with the adjacent Barnett Bank building, that have been empty for years. The rights will apply to the first phase, or about 30,000 square feet of the project, and will go with existing rights the developer has for the remaining space. Trio
