Developers are advancing a scaled-down version of an apartment building planned for the Downtown Southbank one year after a neighboring property owner sued the group over the scale and scope of the project.

The Downtown Development Review Board will review additional modifications Thursday for Jacksonville-based Ventures Development Group LLC’s “Ventures Residential Development,” a 185-unit apartment building on 2.9 acres along Prudential Drive between the Eight Forty One building and the Acosta Bridge. Venture’s new design is about half the size of the 13-story, 300-unit proposal approved by the Downtown Development Review Board and Downtown Investment Authority in 2017.
Florida-based Baer’s Furniture Co. Inc. plans to build its first store in Jacksonville at northwest Gate Parkway and Point Meadows Drive, across from Ikea. Jason Ryals, principal with Colliers International Northeast Florida, said Baer’s paid $3.2 million for about 4 acres from Tampa-based Brightwork Real Estate. The acreage is part of more than 13 acres Brightwork bought for $7.7 million from the Skinner family, he said. Ryals said Baer’s intends to build a store of 80,000 square feet. He said construction likely will start next summer with completion by year-end 2019 or early 2020. A Baer’s representative was not immediately available Tuesday for comment. Baer’s, with 16 locations statewide, describes itself as “Florida’s premium furniture and mattress store.” It sells furnishings for living room, dining,

St. Johns River Ferry back in service Nov. 1 After months of repairs, the St. Johns River Ferry will return to service Nov. 1. The Jacksonville Transportation Authority began working on the ferry vessel, the Jean Ribault, in September. The project also is replacing slip walls, fenders, walkways and bulkheads.
