After a 35-year career with the company, Gate Lands President Ken Wilson will retire Dec. 31 and be succeeded by Drew Frick, general counsel of parent company Gate Petroleum Co. Wilson, 67, joined Jacksonvillebased Gate, a privately held company founded by Herbert Peyton, in 1983 when it bought the real estate assets of Stockton, Whatley, Davin & Co. Wilson said he was 32 when he joined Gate but had worked with Joe Davin on the same large tracts of real estate three years before. “It’s not for the weak of heart,” Wilson said of real estate. “It involves taking risks and it involves riding the tide of economic cycles. Coming to work for Herbert, being an entrepreneur and a risk-taker, I learned a lot,” he said. With Peyton, he said, they developed some of the largest deals in the area. Established in 1884, SWD, as it was known, grew into the largest mortgage loan servicing company in the Southeast with a more than $3.8 billion portfolio in addition to about $100 million in real estate holdings. A high-profile Hendricks Avenue site on the Southbank is in city review for development into apartments, parking and retail space. The city is reviewing civil plans for redevelopment of the former Florida Baptist Convention property at 1230 Hendricks Ave. Jacksonville-based Chadbourne II LLC is identified as the developer of the 3.4-acre block bordered by Hendricks and Naldo avenues, Nira Street and the Interstate 95 ramp. Plans show 345 studio, one- and twobedroom units in a multistory building and a seven-level parking deck. There appear to be 68 studio units, 180 one-bedroom units and 97 two-bedroom apartments.
True Food Kitchen sets opening date True Food Kitchen announced Monday it plans to open Nov. 7 at St. Johns Town Center. The restaurant, which features healthy dining, is at 5205 Big Island Drive in the former Mitchell’s Fish Market space. True Food Kitchen says it plans to hire 130 workers and is holding a job fair at the restaurant from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Oct. 20.
