Tractor Supply Co. wants to build a Jacksonville location in the Arlington area at northeast St. Johns Bluff Road South and Bahia Drive. Lawyer Paul Harden applied for a zoning exception at the site on behalf of land owner Pozin Six Children LLC. The exception is for permanent or restricted outside sale and service. The vacant 8.27-acre site is south of Atlantic Boulevard. Plans show a 19,097-squarefoot Tractor Supply Co. store with a fenced outdoor display area. Tractor Supply Co. has six area locations in Jacksonville at 9025 New Kings Road and in Orange Park, St. Augustine, Saint Johns, Macclenny and Yulee. The company, based in Brentwood, Tennessee, operates 1,900 stores in 49 states. It was founded more than 80 years ago. The company calls itself the largest rural lifestyle retailer in the U.S. and a one-stop shop for recreational farmers, ranchers and others. It sells products for the home, land, pets and animals with a focus on the needs of those living “Life Out Here.”

Preschool laying off 89 workers A preschool facility at the Citicards offices on Jacksonville’s Southside notified city and state officials it will have to remain closed for a least two more months, leaving 89 people out of work. Bright Horizons Children’s Centers at 14000 Citicards Way said it is “taking this action because of COVID-19-related business circumstances that were not reasonably foreseeable.” The preschool furloughed the workers April 30 expecting a closure of less than six months. Also, government contractor Amentum notifed the state that 13 workers at Naval Air Station Jacksonville may be laid off Oct. 26 because of an expiring military contract.

Whole Foods is coming to 2050 S. Third St. in the Pablo Plaza shopping center.

Whole Foods to open store Oct. 7 in Jacksonville Beach It will be the Amazon-owned food chain’s second area location in 12 years. BY MARK BASCH CONTRIBUTING WRITER

More than five years after plans for the site were revealed, Whole Foods Market will open its Jacksonville Beach store at 7 a.m. Oct. 7. The 40,000-square-foot store at 2050 S. Third St. in the Pablo Plaza shopping will be the natural and organic specialty grocer’s second Jacksonville area location in 12 years. Whole Foods opened its first store in the Mandarin Landing shopping center at 10601 San Jose Blvd. in 2008. Features of the Jacksonville Beach store include a sushi and wok station, a fullservice butcher and seafood counters and an in-house bakery. Whole Foods also said the store will offer more than 800 local products from more than 150 suppliers. Equity One Corp., then owner of the

shopping center, announced plans for the store in May 2015. Publix Super Markets Inc. leased the site at the time. Publix moved its supermarket out of that space in 1995 when it opened a new store in the South Beach Parkway center south of Butler Boulevard along Florida A1A. Publix sublet the Pablo Plaza space to Office Depot. Renovations for Whole Foods could not begin until Publix’s lease expired in November 2018. Jacksonville-based Regency Centers Corp. acquired Equity One in 2017 and continued with Equity One’s plans for an extensive remodel to the shopping center. Office Depot relocated to another space in Pablo Plaza and its former site was demolished and rebuilt for Whole Foods. Austin, Texas-based Whole Foods operates 487 U.S. stores, 14 in Canada and seven in the United Kingdom. Amazon.com Inc. bought the company in 1987 for $13.2 billion. MBASCH@JAXDAILYRECORD.COM

Community First Credit Union moving into LaVilla HQ About 75 employees will work in the renovated building. BY KATIE GARWOOD STAFF WRITER

Community First Credit Union is moving into its renovated LaVilla headquarters after purchasing the former Diamond-S and Elkins Building in November. The credit union acquired the 1.7-acre lot, the 32,300-square-foot building and the parking lot for $4.6 million. Building permits say the renovation cost $1.7 million. About 75 of the credit union’s employees will move into the expanded headquarters. They started a phased move-in the first week of September, the company said. The renovation included interior and exterior updates, new finishes and furnishings and upgraded technology. The news release said repurposing an existing building was half the cost of constructing one. “This repurposed building gives us the room we need to grow for the next several years,” John Hirabayashi, CEO and president of Community First, said in the release. “We are proud to continue to contribute to a vibrant Downtown.” The credit union employs about 340 people. It has grown 80% since 2002, a news release said. Its former headquarters at 637 N. Lee St. will continue to house operational and administrative offices, including loan departments, marketing, accounting and finance, along with training and other supporting departments. A November news release said the

Boulevard West and St. Augustine Road. “Basically, we are consolidating the four locations into one so everything can be in one place,” Morse said in July. Deerwood Center is off Philips Highway and Baymeadows Way West. Snowbird Technologies makes airconditioning units for the military that can withstand extreme weather conditions, long term and in all environments, such as heat, sand, dust, saltwater and fog. Morse expects $10 million in sales this year, up “significantly” from last year. The company also sells parts, which generates profits if U.S. Department of Defense contracts are slow. Morse said Snowbird has “a very healthy spare parts business.” “Even if we are not building units, the company is profitable based on spare parts sales,” he said. Morse bought Snowbird, founded in 1992 in Jacksonville, in 2013.

Snowbird buys the components and assembles and tests them in the Jacksonville facility. It employs about 20 people. “Our units are deployed by every military service and they are deployed all around the world,” Morse said. He said thousands are used globally.
