Aldi closing Southside store Nov. 26 Aldi Inc. will close its Avenues-area Southside Square store Nov. 26 for renovation as it invests nationally to remodel and expand its stores. Matt Thon, Aldi Haines City Division vice president, said Tuesday the company would provide details later on the grand reopening, which has not been scheduled. He said Aldi intends to reopen the store in the winter. The store at 9041 Southside Blvd. was the Germany-based discount chain’s first in Duval County and one of the first in the area when it opened in 2015. Aldi wants to renovate the 21,089-square-foot grocery store at a cost of $900,000, plans show. It invested about $900,000 in converting the former Circle K Furniture store in 2015. Aldi has been opening standalone stores as well as converting second-generation space within shopping centers, like at Southside Square. Aldi has 11 confirmed sites in Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns counties. It opened its first area store in October 2014 in St. Augustine.

Steller Group Inc. is building the threestory building at 5491 Dolphin Point Blvd. on the north end of the campus at a construction cost of $20 million. The building will house the Keigwin School of Nursing, the School of Applied Health Sciences and the School of Orthodontics. Associated programs include speech pathology, mental health counseling, occupational therapy and kinesiology. “Jacksonville University’s academic breadth and brand in the healthcare space inspired the creation of this 103,000 square-foot building,” said Interim Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs Christine Sapienza in an email.
