Mayo Clinic CEO: Health care transforming in the digital age

Leaning into telemedicine, artificial intelligence and home-based medicine will be key to transforming health care

The Lake Gray Boulevard virtual maintenance project supports the U.S. Navy P-8 aircraft fleet based in Florida.

One benefit of the pandemic was the introduction of telemedicine, he said. The technology already had been around, but health systems didn’t think people were ready for it. Now, about 25% of all visits at Mayo Clinic’s campuses are virtual. “We also now have to take the next step, which is integrating telehealth into routine care, so it’s not an either/or option – which it predominantly is now – but it’s part of how care is delivered longituSEE MAYO, PAGE 3

and solving its issues such as access to and affordability of care, said Mayo Clinic President and CEO Gianrico Farrugia. Mayo Clinic can be the one to lead the charge, Farrugia said in a presentation Sept. 21 to the World Affairs Council of Jacksonville at The River Club Downtown. “Who we are drives us to seek who we need to become,” he said. “We need to have a commitment that we are going to continue to lead a patientcentered transformation of health care in the digital age.”

Boeing to open training center in West Jacksonville

The Boeing Co. scheduled a ribbon-cutting and open house Sept. 28 for its Boeing Jacksonville Training Systems Center of Excellence in West Jacksonville. The aerospace company developed the 23,000-squarefoot center at 6225 Lake Gray Blvd. Chicago-based Boeing said Sept. 22 that the new virtual maintenance training center for military aircraft, including the U.S. Navy’s P-8 fleet based in Florida, “increases Boeing’s competitive edge while serving the Navy’s mission-ready requirements.” The city issued a permit March 22 for Tenant Contractors Inc. to renovate the space at a cost of $400,000, although at the time Boeing did not announce the functions it will serve. Boeing said that in addition to P-8 and F/A-18 virtual maintenance and engineering simulators, the renovated facility includes four conference rooms and two classrooms. “With this opening, Boeing is

Mayo Clinic President and CEO Gianrico Farrugia said the pandemic has lifted the use of telemedicine. “We also now have to take the next step, which is integrating telehealth into routine care,” he told the World Affairs Council on Sept. 21 at The River Club Downtown.

Gianrico Farrugia says technology including telemedicine, home health care and artificial intelligence are changing the industry.

expected to add new P-8 aircrew trainer positions in Jacksonville,” it said. The event is 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Boeing says that as a global aerospace company, it develops, manufactures and services commercial airplanes, defense products and space systems for customers in more than 150 countries. The Meek Companies of Jacksonville manages the Lake Gray property. Craig Meek of The Meek Companies said previously that CBRE First Vice President Bruce Jackson represented the landlord in the transaction. A group of investors owns Lake Gray Plaza through Montreal-based Lake Gray Plaza LLC. Meek said the Boeing lease will bring the 100,000-square-foot business complex to full occupancy. Boeing issued a statement Feb 4: “In the Jacksonville area, specifically Cecil Airport and Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Boeing supports the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy with maintenance, repair and overhaul work as well as comprehensive training for various aircraft and products so they meet mission requirements.” NAS Jacksonville and Cecil Airport are in West Jacksonville. Boeing said that in Jacksonville it developed and supports the U.S. Navy’s P-8A Training Facility at Naval Air Station Jacksonville. It also said teams at Boeing Cecil Field support the F/A-18 A-D Hornet, F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. On Dec. 17, Boeing and the Jacksonville Aviation Authority announced an agreement for a new hangar and office space at Cecil Airport that eventually will replace the existing Boeing Cecil Field site footprint. Boeing said it entered into a 25-year lease agreement with the aviation authority to increase its maintenance, repair and overhaul operations at its Cecil Field site at Cecil Airport. It anticipates a start date of opera-

tions in January 2024. On July 27, the Jacksonville City Council awarded The Boeing Co. a $425,000 city infrastructure grant to support the company’s $116.5 million plan to expand its maintenance, repair and operations hangar at Cecil Airport. The Council approved the grant to assist Boeing with an estimated $3 million in infrastructure expenditures for the project over three years. KMATHIS@JAXDAILYRECORD.COM @MATHISKB (904) 356-2466

MAYO CEO ON MASKS In response to an audience question about types of masks and when they should be worn, Mayo Clinic President and CEO Gianrico Farrugia said the most important thing is that masks are effective in preventing the spread of COVID-19. “There are many questions that need to be answered but we should never distract ourselves from the core,” he said. “The core is masks work. Masks prevent the transmission of infection time and time again, masks have shown to make a massive difference.”

Mayo CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

dinally and seamlessly,” he said. Farrugia said telehealth improves patient satisfaction and quality of care and reduces costs. Another crucial part in transforming health care is to find more cures for chronic diseases. He said that means a new way to conduct clinical trials. In the coming weeks, a national clinical trial coalition will be announced, which he said would allow for broader participation. Artificial intelligence and data also can be useful in finding new cures for diseases, as well as ways to prevent them. Farrugia said a Mayo physician developed an algorithm from 7 million patient electrocardiograms to predict heart problems before they occur. “We’re finding a tremendous amount of value in mining existing data to create new knowledge and help more people,”

While there are other questions still to be answered about the virus, such as developing new therapies for treatment and what is a safe distance to keep from others to prevent transmission, Farrugia said masks are one thing that have been proved to be effective. “This is not something you should waffle about,” he said. “There are certainly very strong, well-done studies that show why masks work for COVID-19.”

he said. Another initiative the health system started was an advanced care at home program. It began in Jacksonville and is now rolling out across the country. It allows patients to receive care from Mayo Clinic doctors virtually from their homes. Patients are sent home with the appropriate tools and devices to receive hospital care at home. Farrugia said for those in the program, readmissions into the hospital were reduced by half. Even with the oncoming digital revolution of health care, Farrugia said there will still be a place for hospitals. “The need for hospitals is not going to go away,” he said. “It will be a very different type of facility. We have to design hospitals that come to the patient rather than the patient being moved around the hospital.” KGARWOOD@JAXDAILYRECORD.COM (904) 356-2466
