s a scientist at Medtronic’s Jacksonville office working on chronic infections, Matthew Myntti said he began to understand the lifethreatening nature of chronic wounds, and the infections that

come with them. He left the medical technology company in 2012 to start his own research focused on treating chronic wounds and keeping them from becoming infected. With that, he formed Next Science, where he is president and chief technology officer. Next Science develops products to reduce biofilm-based infections, which can lead to death.

A biofilm is a resistant form of bacterial infection, unsusceptible to antibiotics or gentle rinsing. If a biofilm is left unaddressed on a wound, it can cause deadly infections. It could mean amputation, which could create a higher risk for infection and death, Myntti said. “The outcomes if you have a toe amputated are worse at five years than breast cancer,” Myntti said. “So it’s not a good thing. It’s a terrible outcome on prosthetic joint infections.” Myntti said he was lucky to not face many of the financial challenges most startups see in their first few years. He met Australian investor Lang Walker through mutual connections, which resulted in Walker becoming the company’s main backer, and funded it through an initial public offering in 2019. It took three days to reach its $35 million IPO maximum, according to Stockhead.com. The stock value has increased 13.68% in the past year. Myntti had data from studies using his products that he selffunded at Montana State Univer-

That was enough for Walker to provide an initial investment that turned into a continuous one. “Normally when you have a startup company, you are always wondering when you’re going to run out of money, and we had the exact opposite problem,” Myntti said. “They were always willing to overfund if it was helpful. So we never went through that starvation phase on the journey. Nobody ever gets that. It was just somewhat of a miracle.” Myntti first developed the BLASTX antimicrobial wound gel, which deconstructs biofilms on wounds. While the first product he worked on was BLASTX, Myntti said its first patent was for Bactisure, a surgical lavage for prosthetic joint infections. That was licensed to Zimmer Biomet, a medical device manufacturer. It also has made the SURGX sterile antimicrobial gel, which reduces post-surgical site infections. The latest technology, which came out this year, is XPERIENCE, a no rinse, antimicrobial solution. The products are powered by XBIO Technology, which attacks and deconstructs the biofilm and defends against it reforming. Next Science is based in Jacksonville in Deerwood Park, with an office in Sydney, Australia. The Australia office has three employees - the CEO, CFO and an assistant. About 50 others are based in Jacksonville or are on the road selling the product.

Positions in the Jacksonville office include chemists, engineers, microbiologists, researchers, clinical study coordinators and regulatory affairs specialists who work with the Food and Drug Administration for approvals. Next Science sells to orthopedic surgeons and hospitals. About 100 sites use the technology. Health systems and hospitals

include HCA Healthcare, Barnabas Healthcare, Duke University Hospital, Scripps Mercy Hospital, Piedmont Hospital, UnityPoint Health and Sharp Healthcare. Next Science also sells its products to U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals to treat chronic wounds and amputations. While other companies make

similar products, Myntti said Next Science stands apart. He said the products are the only ones that are not toxic to the body and don’t need to be washed out of the wound. The company has 35 patents and counting. “There are other products out there to try to treat chronic wounds or to treat or prevent

s a cardiologist with a Master of Business Administration, UF Health Jacksonville’s Dr. John Catanzaro sees medicine differently. While he spends most of his time treating patients, a portion is spent looking for better, safer ways to care for cardiac patients, especially those with defibrillators and pacemakers. “It’s about looking for problems,” he said. “Along the way you notice there are problems, whether it happens to you or it’s a problem in the field or it’s a problem in the public. The better you can learn and understand the problem, the closer you can come to a solution.” Catanzaro has had a hand in developing two devices for those patients with a third underway. The latest is a phone case and shirt to protect patients with defibrillators from the magnets in the iPhone 12. The magnet in the phone is strong enough to disable the defibrillator if it is within 6 inches of it, typically in a shirt pocket. Apple issued warnings to users to keep their phones more than 6 inches from their defibrillators, or 12 inches if it is wirelessly charging. “It renders it inactive, so if you have a heart attack and the phone is in the chest pocket, the device won’t be able to shock you,” Catanzaro said. Catanzaro filed a provisional patent for his develop-

ment of a shirt and phone case with a blend of a material that blocks magnetic fields. Another was a catheter that releases a gel into the esophagus to regulate its temperature during ablation procedures. In that process, doctors use cold or heat energy to correct heart rhythm problems, such as atrial fibrillation. In that procedure, the esophagus, located next to the heart, is at risk of being damaged from the heat or cold energy. If damaged, a patient’s chance of death following the procedure is at about 80%. Catanzaro said he partnered with a material scientist to create a prototype, tested it on animals to prove it is effective. He now is working to take the product to clinical trials in the next year. The third invention was developed at UF Health Jacksonville. Catanzaro was the first in the world to implement it in 2018. Catanzaro developed a regenerative bio envelope to protect a cardiac defibrillator and keep tissue from growing around it, rendering it less effective. Rather than scar tissue growing around the device, new tissue with blood supply grows around it. With scar tissue, energy from the defibrillator is absorbed and less of it reaches the heart. Catanzaro said he is studying the envelope to show how it benefits patients over time. In addition to his role as a cardiologist and electrophysiologist, Catanzaro leads the cardiac electrophysiology fellowship and teaches future doctors. In that role, he encourages them to use new technologies and try to come up with their own. “It’s great to use other people’s toys, but when you can develop your own, it’s even more fun,” he said. “They really take a liking to coming up with your own idea and bringing it to life to commercialize something.” KGARWOOD@JAXDAILYRECORD.COM (904) 356-2466

acksonville University is preparing nurses for the hospital of the future, with help from a pair of robots and virtual reality technology. Driven by the COVID-19 pandemic, the trend in delivering medical care is telehealth, using technology to connect doctors and nurses with patients while limiting personal contact. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines telehealth as the use of two-way telecommunication technologies to provide clinical health care through a variety of remote methods. When the pandemic began during the first quarter of 2020, the number of telehealth visits increased by 50% compared with the same period in 2019, according to the CDC. There was a 154% increase in week 13 of 2020 compared with the same period in 2019. “Nurses have to learn how to com-

municate through this technology. This is the future of education,” said Amber Santos, clinical assistant professor of nursing and director of innovation and quality at Santos JU’s Keigwin School of Nursing. Originally developed for videoconferencing, the remotely controlled robots, nicknamed Nellie and Dunk’N after JU’s mascots, are about 4 feet tall and weigh 16 pounds. They have two wheels at the bottom, allowing for 360-degree maneuverability, much like a Segway. The software has artificial intelligence allowing the robots to avoid people and objects while navigating from one teaching area to the next. The devices have a tablet-size screen at the top with a camera, microphone and speaker that allows students to hear and speak to a simulated physician facilitated by the school’s IT staff. The robots can connect wirelessly to a student’s mobile device, allowing the virtual doctor to look closely at a wound on the medical mannikin, for example. “It’s an easy product to use,” Santos said. The robots were purchased with funds from the Entrepreneurism, Policy, Innovation and Commerce program. With

financial support from the state Legislature, EPIC was established at JU to attract, develop and retain in-state, qualified graduates in fields that directly contribute to the state’s economic prosperity. The school also uses virtual reality goggles connected wirelessly to computers. “The headsets were designed for gaming, but they are moving into education. The immersive environment evokes emotion. It goes from a lecture to an interactive environment. That makes students able to better retain information,” Santos said. Having access to virtual reality devices hasn’t changed the core of the curriculum, but it allows learning at a faster pace. Santos said some courses that took 16 months now can be completed in as few as 12 months. The technology has promise beyond teaching patient care scenarios. The robots also can help JU nursing students transition to the workforce after graduation by allowing potential employers to interview candidates virtually. “With COVID-19, some of our hospital partners want to interview remotely,” Santos said. and will be the first in the country to offer carbon ion therapy after that. Proton radiotherapy in cancer treatment allows for more careful and precise treatment compared with traditional radiotherapy. It presents an alternative, or addition, to surgery, chemotherapy and traditional radiation. Carbon ion therapy is used to treat cancers that may be resistant to proton beam therapy. It is a similar technology in that it can destroy cancer cells without damaging surrounding healthy tissue. Carbon ions are 12 times the weight and size of proton ions,

such as immunotherapy, where a patient’s immune cells are removed from their system and engineered in a lab to make them better able to locate tumor cells and destroy them. “That’s especially useful for leukemia and lymphoma, and especially for patients who don’t respond to anything else and have a limited life expectancy,” Dronca said. In addition to the existing forms of cancer treatment, Dronca said Mayo Clinic Jacksonville is participating in about 250 clinical trials for different forms of can-

team approach is crucial in treating cancer and finding new ways to do it, according to two Mayo Clinic Jacksonville oncologists. Dr. Roxana Dronca, an oncologist at the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center in Jacksonville, said the hospital’s approach to cancer treatment is unlike many others and involves doctors and specialists from across the campus. “Cancer is a team sport really, from the multiple treatment options available and ways to approach it and the therapies we have,” she said. “It’s truly an art and having multiple minds coming together to evaluate everything has been the most valuable experience.” While Mayo Clinic Cancer Center already offers treatments like CAR-T cell therapy, immunology, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and others, it is working on bringing more to the Jacksonville campus. UNF MEDNEXUS: EDUCATION COMBINED WITH TECHNOLOGY

he University of North Florida is expanding its health care education influence through an initiative called Med-

Nexus. Supported by a $6 million appropriation in the 2020-21 budget approved by the state Legislature, UNF MedNexus is building a nurse training and simulation center at Florida State College at Jacksonville’s Deerwood Center campus, establishing a health care teaching site in Palm Coast in partnership with Daytona State College and expanding the medical technology innovation lab on UNF’s campus in Jacksonville. The hub-and-spoke structure of UNF MedNexus is designed to be the first comprehensive, university-based medical and health care nexus in the U.S., partnering with local medical centers to connect health care providers with university students, faculty and researchers. “I came up with the idea when a board member said it would be great to have a medical school – but that’s not likely,” said former UNF President David Szymanski, who will transition to full-time CEO and executive director of UNF MedNexus on Sept. 17. While it is not a medical school, MedNexus gives the university a regional health care educa-

tion footprint and it is “uniquely UNF,” Szymanski said. “We’ll be able to train the people who work in hospitals – nurses, physical therapists and counselors,” Szymanski said. In addition to Daytona State College, MedNexus partners include the city of Palm Coast, AdventHealth and Allete Energy. The program also is working with public high schools in Palm Coast to develop career paths for students to enter higher education and then the health care workforce. “Florida’s population is growing and aging and there is a shortage of health care professionals,” Szymanski said. The second phase will be expansion of the medical technology and research facility at UNF. Szymanski said specialized equipment, such as mass spec-

trometers, will be used to develop diagnostic techniques that could lead to early detection of cancer and neurological disorders. The facility also will conduct biomedical and pharmaceutical research. In partnership with Johnson & Johnson, 3D biomedical printing technology will be developed to manufacture medical devices, advanced prosthetics and skin grafts for burn patients, Szymanski said. “There really are no bounds for MedNexus. With original research, you don’t know where it will lead,” he said. VIRTUAL REALITY AT FSCJ

In February, UNF MedNexus and FSCJ established a partnership that expands FSCJ’s health care education resources at the college’s Deerwood Center campus. Build-out of the new classroom

and medical simulation facility is scheduled for completion in January. Szymanski and FSCJ President John Avendano also signed a memorandum of understanding for an academic partnership that will create a master’s pathway for FSCJ students toward UNF’s graduate-degree nursing programs. The Health Honors Direct master’s program allows students in FSCJ’s nursing program to enroll in up to nine credit hours in UNF’s nursing master’s program. UNF MedNexus will locate its nurse training and health care simulation center to be used by students within UNF’s Brooks College of Health at the FSCJ Deerwood Center. The simulation lab will allow students to learn hands-on skills and give them an opportunity to practice clinical scenarios on

patient care situations, the same way students are learning at FSCJ’s North Campus. With $2.3 million in state funds, the college established virtual reality simulation labs that are used by students in the nursing program, said Neal Henning, FSCJ dean of health sciences. Students receive up to 50% of the clinical rotation part of the curriculum in the virtual reality and simulation labs. “The usage before the pandemic was incredible. It is even more now as clinics are limiting personal contact,” Henning said. Students interact with high-fidelity medical mannikins – virtual patients – and perform simu- Henning lated assessments, examinations and procedures much as they would with a live patient. “The students are more comfortable because it’s not life-and -death. The equipment records what the students do and then it is reviewed with faculty,” Henning said. The facility comprises four patient rooms with a nursing station and an operating room. Vital signs telemetry and electronic medical records are simulated. “It is realistic. The mannikins react like a real person. We can even program the virtual patient to be cranky,” Henning said. “Time on task is critical for students to become better and more comfortable with their craft. JAX CHAMBER: TAKING A NEW APPROACH TO FIND SOLUTIONS Open innovation helps identify needs and problems and then asks the community for solutions. BY KATIE GARWOOD STAFF WRITER

To help foster innovation in Northeast Florida, JAX Chamber Chief Innovation Officer Carlton Robinson wanted to take a different approach than the chamber had taken in the past. In a method called open innovation, Robinson said he and the chamber decided to work with some of the region’s largest health care providers, identify their needs and problems, and put a call out to the community with solutions.

“The more and more I researched that concept, I thought the chamber could be a really good c e n t e r p i e c e Robinson because we have a relationship with the small business community and we have a relationship with the corporate community and we’re trusted,” he said. “We put something in place, worked with three or four large enterprises to identify their use cases and we put that out to the entrepreneur community.” The chamber put out the call to innovate in March. It was the first project for the chamber’s Open Innovation Center at the Jacksonville Regional Transportation Center in LaVilla. Robinson said the chamber

partnered with Brooks Rehabilitation, UF Health Jacksonville and Florida Blue/Guidewell. The call to innovate had about 50 applications, he said. Those were pared down to seven finalists, who were selected based on how well they solved the issue posed by the company. Pitches came from five states, Robinson said. “It was a really good exercise for us and it’s a format we can continue in other areas,” he said. Finalists’ products included an app for teledentistry to encourage preventive care, a remote patient monitoring device, a virtual care platform designed by doctors, and a health services listing hub that provides users with health care services based on their needs. Sean Hall, founder of Hangtech LLC, a health care software development company, pitched a post-surgical neurological track-

ing app that can track pupil size, heart rate and other symptoms so doctors can check on patients virtually as they recover. He responded to Florida Blue/ Guidewell and UF Health Jacksonville’s request to deliver virtual care in underserved communities for in-home programs such as rehab, self-management, pain programs and post-surgery recovery. Hall was connected to UF Health Jacksonville to help implement the technology and is working with the hospital on more of its software development needs. The goal of the call to innovate wasn’t to serve as an incubator and help entrepreneurs develop their products, but rather connect them to companies that have a problem they can solve. “Once you get into these types of technologies, we’re really just facilitating and making introduc-

tions and relationships,” Robinson said. “The technology, we’re not experts in that area. That’s why I thought if we can position ourselves as a vetting mechanism for quality entrepreneurs and make those introductions to the corporations, the majority of which are our members, that could be a really good thing for our community.” Robinson plans another call to innovate by year-end. RV One wants to convert the existing automotive sales and service center into an RV sales and service center. The project includes renovating the building and reworking the parking lot to accommodate RVs. Auto Boutique, which previously occupied the Dames Point site bought by RV Retailer, intends to build a new dealership at the site of the former Playtime Triple Family Drive-In Theater in West Jacksonville. Auto Boutique seeks to rezone the vacant property at 6300 Blanding Blvd. for auto sales and repair uses and build a 30,000-square-foot dealership with 1,021 parking spaces for vehicle staging. Almond Engineering is the civil engineer. Kirill Fesenko of Auto Boutique said his group leased the 8281 Merrill Road dealership until RV Retailer bought it. Memorabilia firm bets on Trevor Lawrence THE CARD The Trevor Lawrence 2021 Leaf Pro Set rookie card featured on the Collectable Sports Assets website at Collectable.com. The company plans to sell 3,200 shares of a basket of 20 of the cards at $5 each. Collectable says the cards are graded SGC 10 Pristine and that only 0.5% of the print run of more than 56,000 cards meets that standard.

The company sells shares in sports collectibles featuring the rookie Jaguars quarterback and other sports figures. Jacksonville Jaguars fans aren’t the only ones expecting big things from quarterback Trevor Lawrence. A sports memorabilia firm that sells shares in collectibles added Lawrence trading cards to its long list of items connected to legendary sports figures. White Plains, New Yorkbased Collectable Sports Assets LLC has registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission to sell shares in sports memorabilia. The company said in SEC filings its business gives fans the opportunity to invest in items that may be out of reach financially for the average consumer. “In creating fractional ownership investment oppor-

tunities for collectibles, we aim to provide accessibility, enhanced security, increased socialization and community, and a fully regulated approach to memorabilia ownership,” it said. “We have targeted and plan to continue to target the acquisition or consignment of sports collectible assets ranging in price anywhere from $10,000 to $20,000,000. Our mission is to democratize wealth

accumulation within this asset class by providing access, liquidity and transparency within the class.” The inventory of collectibles in its SEC filings includes items connected to sports legends such as Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson and Wilt Chamberlain. Lawrence is the only athlete who was on the list before even playing a professional game. Lawrence’s cards first were listed by the company in SEC

filings in July. The most recent filing said Lawrence is “widely considered to be one of the best amateur quarterback prospects.” Collectable Sports Assets is selling fractional shares in a basket of 20 Lawrence cards issued by a company called Pro Set. The company seeks to sell at least 3,200 units in the Lawrence card set at $5 per unit.

After years of job cuts, CSX now struggling to hire

CSX Corp. is trying to hire more workers as freight traffic picks up, but the continued COVID-19 pandemic is creating challenges for its existing employees. “211 employees out with COVID today at CSX, and that’s down,” CEO Jim Foote said in a Sept. 10 investor conference sponsored by Cowen Inc. The Jacksonville-based railroad company had about 19,000 employees in its operations throughout the Eastern U.S. as of June 30. That’s about 8,000 lower than its headcount at the beginning of 2017. After years of cuts, CSX began to hire more staff for its rail network about a year ago. Like many other businesses, the company is having difficulty finding workers, Foote said in the webcast conference. “The number of people we could find that wanted to come and work was greatly

diminished from what we had historically seen,” he said. “We have been trying all sorts of different ways to increase our workforce.” One initiative was an employee referral program that brought in about 1,500 applicants, but not all of them followed through and entered the company’s training program, Foote said. “It’s something that all of us face. I think the truckers have faced it already for a long time and we just didn’t wake up and say that could be us some day,” he said. “I think it’s the new Foote norm and we’d better get ahead of the curve.” Even if CSX is fully staffed, the company continues to face “disruption, chaos, call it whatever you want” from supply chain shortages that have hurt its freight customers, Foote said. The impact of Hurricane Ida on much of the Eastern U.S. also affected freight traffic. “I’m waiting for the meteor to strike and then the locusts to come and then we can discuss what the fourth quarter’s going to look like,” he said. However, Foote remains confident about CSX’s outlook. “We’ll get back to where we were” before the pandemic, he said. “We’ll move more freight
