Hanania said his team looks fo r wa rd to relocating and becoming a Hanania part of Downtown. THE BASCH REPORT

Redwire stock jumps on first day of trading second-quarter results. Genesis Park’s stock closed at $9.87 on March 24 before announcing the merger and the stock reached a high of $11.15 on March 29, but it mostly traded in the $10s as the companies worked to complete the merger. When it was completed, Redwire said the transaction valued the company at $640 million. The proxy statement said the company would have about 60 million outstanding shares after the merger, so a value of about $10 seems right. After closing at $10.50 Sept. 2, the stock rose as much as $2.46 to a new high of $12.96 the next day as the name changed. Redwire trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker “RDW.”

MARK BASCH CONTRIBUTING WRITER

The surge started after the Jacksonville-based space tech company merged with Genesis Park Acquisiton. Other than the new name, nothing really changed when Redwire Corp. began trading Sept. 3 under that moniker. Still, the stock jumped higher on its first trading day as Redwire. Jacksonville-based space technology company Redwire agreed in March to merge with Genesis Park Acquisition Corp., a special purpose acquisition company formed to find a merger target. Investors have known for weeks the merger was targeted for a Sept. 2 completion and publicly traded Genesis Park would change its name to Redwire. Genesis Park’s proxy statement filed two months ago reported Redwire’s first-quarter revenue was $31.7 million, but the company has not updated the financial data with

Dick’s Wings owner filed delayed report ARC Group Inc., owner of the Dick’s Wings and Grill restaurant chain, filed its delayed annual report last week – for 2019. The Orange Park-based company, which also owns the WingHouse Bar & Grill and Fat Patty’s chains, still hasn’t filed its 2020 report. The company tripled its revenue to $29.1 million in 2019 because of the acquisition of Fat Patty’s in 2018 and WingHouse in 2019. However, ARC Group had a net loss of $2.6 million for the year.

The 2019 report did say ARC Group was impacted in 2020 by the COVID-19 pandemic and permanently closed some Dick’s Wings and WingHouse locations last year. ARC Group said as of the date of its 2019 report, there were 16 franchised and three company-owned Dick’s Wings restaurants in operation. WingHouse has 20 restaurants and Fat Patty’s has four. The report expressed optimism about the company’s results going forward. “We expect to begin generating net income during the next 12 months as we generate increasing revenue from operations through our new and existing company-owned and franchised restaurants,” it said.

New FIS director resigns over conflict The newest board member of Fidelity National Information Services Inc., known as FIS, was forced to resign last week over an unspecified conflict of interest. The Jacksonville-based financial technology firm said in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing that Mark Hawkins, who joined the board in June, has a conflict over his membership on the board of another company that cannot be remedied. Hawkins was named to the FIS board of directors in June. He is president emeritus of Salesforce.com, which provides cloud computing solutions.

FIS said when Hawkins was appointed he also serves on the boards of SecureWorks Corp., a provider of cybersecurity solutions; Toast Inc., a cloud-based Hawkins restaurant software company; and Plex Systems Inc., a provider of clouddelivered smart manufacturing solutions.

Azimuth raises $5.3M in capital Jacksonville-based Azimuth GRC Inc. said in an SEC filing last week it sold $5.3 million in equity and intends to raise $1 million more in capital. The filing followed an announcement by Azimuth that San Francisco-based venture capital firm Mosaik Partners led a round of new financing for the company, without disclosing the amount. Azimuth, founded in 2017, provides regulatory compliance technology for financial institutions.

Revalize expands with 4 acquisitions Revalize, which provides software for manufacturers, announced last week it is expanding with four acquisitions. Revalize was formed in June by AutoQuotes LLC and pri-

vate equity firm TA Associates, who said the company would be based in Jacksonville and create 100 jobs. The company said it acquired Attainia Holdings Inc., which provides technology for medical equipment companies; BCA Technologies Inc., which offers technology for manufacturers; LeadMethod Inc., which offers technology for distribution; and MicroD LLC, which provides technology for home furnishing manufacturers. Terms of the deals were not announced.

LFTD expanding with Californiabased company

LFTD Partners Inc. announced an agreement last week to buy California-based Fresh Farms E-Liquid LLC, a company that says it produces alternatives to traditional tobacco products. LFTD, formerly known as Acquired Sales Corp., moved its headquarters to Jacksonville in January but has no operating businesses in the area. The company focuses on acquisitions of companies that make cannabinoid and vape products. The company agreed to pay $14.2 million in cash and stock valued at $31.5 million to buy Fresh Farms. The deal is subject to a number of conditions, including a capital raise by LFTD.

Readers unload on ivermectin story

MATT WALSH PUBLISHER

We knew it would happen. Readers would tell us how wrong and stupid we are and that we should stick to business, not science, in the Daily Record. They wrote in response to the column two weeks ago, “The Battle for Ivermectin.” This excerpt from one email pretty much covers the sentiments of those who objected to what we did: “Once again, and sadly, Matt Walsh opens his ignorant and ill-informed mouth in the “Review and Comment,” Aug. 27-Sept. 2, to spew forth inaccurate and potentially dangerous information. “Clearly, Matt has overstepped his bounds as editor (again) and tried to insert his Trump and DeSantis fawning in an inappropriate venue. Matt should stay out of the science realm since he clearly has no scientific expertise. The Business Observer should be just that, a Business Observer. “I subscribed as a small business to learn about local businesses and possibly connect with them to enhance my business. I can no longer stand to see Matt’s opinionated and useless commentaries not related to business. “In addition, when he tries to put forth his business opinions, they are typically incorrect and inflammatory. Why not just report the business news, factually, without all of the biased drama? Honestly, I haven’t looked up his credentials, but I definitely question every single word he prints.” This individual ended with the stern, blunt request: Cancel her subscription immediately, and refund what’s owed. She declined to have her name revealed. In addition to that slashing, here are a few more choice words from readers’ loveless letters: n “(The) article is just his misguided hearsay opinion.” n “An abomination” … “a disservice to the community for writing that drivel.” n “Take down that article.” n “Why don’t you keep these types of harmful BS stories to your Facebook and other social media cesspool groups?” Even newsroom colleagues at the Jacksonville Daily Record and the Business Observer winced and resisted what we published. And this week they urged we not publish in print readers’ chastising letters and responses to their criticisms from one of the pro-ivermectin doctors who co-founded the Front Line COVID-19 Critical Care Alliance. Wrote one editor in an email: “I think this falls way out of the Business Observer’s model and mission for readers. … I think most readers of Business Observer and Daily Record … are going to be like: ‘What the

hell is this doing in the Business Observer?’” Indeed, three letter writers said the same thing: Stick to business. When we published the original column, we admitted to readers it was out of the norm. But sometimes you need to challenge the status quo and conventional thinking. After all, isn’t that what a lot of you have done with your own businesses? You’ve said: “I can do that job better than what’s being done.” You challenged conventional wisdom. Isn’t that what Joseph Schumpeter called “creative destruction”? The act of taking new information and testing it to determine whether it’s better than what already exists? In the case of ivermectin, we for sure don’t pretend to know the science of clinical trials. But when we read “The Case That Cracked Covid” by acclaimed journalist and author Michael Capuzzo, the most startling aspect to the story was how the Washington and world medical establishments so summarily have dismissed this FDA-approved drug and the signs it was showing to fight COVID-19. Call us ignorant and illinformed, but we can’t help but ask the question: Why didn’t Dr. Fauci and all the other medical and Big Pharma know-it-alls do whatever it took to explore every therapeutic option? Think about this: Dr. Pierre Kory testified to the U.S. Senate on Mother’s Day 2020 to inform the Senate that ivermectin was showing signs of preventing people from dying from COVID-19. But the Senate ignored him. It took 10 more months before the vaccines began widespread distribution. In that time, according to the COVID Tracking Project, 442,829 Americans died from COVID-19, and more than 30 million cases of COVID-19 have been recorded overall. You have to wonder: How many of those deaths and cases could have been prevented if the same efforts had been applied to the efficacy of ivermectin as to Big Pharma’s vaccines? What’s more, consider the cost. U.S. taxpayers have spent $21.18 billion on the development and distribution of the vaccines. With 176 million Americans fully vaccinated, that equates to $120 per person for two vaccine shots. Ivermectin, in contrast, costs about $1.50 per tablet. It varies, but recommended treatment with ivermectin for five days to prevent early-stage COVID-19 would cost around $10. We’ll admit again: The ivermectin story is out of the normal bounds of the Business Observer and Jacksonville Daily Record. But it is definitely a business and economic story as much as a medical story. Just think how different your business and your life might be if aggressive research on ivermectin proved its efficacy and in turn avoided the disaster of shutting down the world economy. That research can and should be done. MWALSH@ JAXDAILYRECORD.COM

IVERMECTIN STORY PROMPTS RESPONSES Two weeks ago, we urged readers to read a long magazine article on the use of the drug ivermectin to treat COVID-19 — “The Drug That Cracked COVID.” You can read it at rescue.substack.com. Written by New York Times bestselling author and journalist Michael Capuzzo for his and his wife Teresa’s Pennsylvania magazine, Mountain Home, the article chronicled the struggles of renowned academic medical researchers and physicians Drs. Pierre Kory and Paul Malik and Kory others to convince public health agencies in the U.S. and around the world of the efficacy of ivermectin in the treatment of COVID-19 and that this FDA-approved, generic drug should be authorized for doctors to prescribe. As expected, we received numerous emails. Some applauded us for bringing the story to light and told us how the drug had saved people’s lives. Others stridently chastised us, accusing us of promoting the use of the drug and promoting it over vaccines. We were doing neither. This week we are publishing emails of those who opposed what we did, along with Kory’s responses to readers’ concerns and criticisms. In addition, we are publishing one letter (of many we received) in support of our publishing Capuzzo’s story. MATT WALSH, PUBLISHER

Take down article A family member of mine had a serious case of scabies at a local nursing home in Jacksonville. The nursing home wanted to give her ivermectin. After reading the possible side effects and how those effects related to my family member’s health, I told them to not give her the medicine. Instead, they ignored my request. As a result of one single dose, my family member was admitted to a hospital and almost died. Ivermectin is not a cure for COVID. The advice of the majority of physicians with years of education and experience about Ivermectin needs to be heeded, not just a handful of doctors hand-picked to support your non-medical opinion. These types of COVID misinformation kill folks. I would like to see you take down this article before someone takes Ivermectin at your unprofessional advice, becomes severely ill and possibly dies. TAMMY MYERS, JACKSONVILLE

Dr. Kory responds: In nursing homes and prisons throughout the world, during scabies outbreaks, ivermectin is distributed and administered to all residents, inmates and staff as a standard practice for controlling outbreaks. In fact, one of the first signals of efficacy of ivermectin in COVID-19 came out of a group of nursing homes in France, where one home had suffered a scabies outbreak such that all residents were treated with ivermectin. Administrators noticed that infections were halved (10.6% vs. 22.6%) and zero deaths occurred in that home compared to the 4.9% mortality rate among the surrounding nursing homes where residents had not been treated with ivermectin. Further, ivermectin is one of the safest medicines in history, having been mass distributed across continents to both young and old, healthy and unwell in the eradiction of disfiguring parasitic diseases. The WHO has stated in its guideline document for scabies that the majority of side effects are “minor and transient.” Lastly, in the words of Dr. Jacques Descote, world famous French toxicologist who just completed a comprehensive review on the safety of ivermectin, “Severe adverse events are unequivocally and exceedingly rare.” Finally, in that same review, Dr. Descotes could not find one provable instance of a death caused by ivermectin, even considering the case reports of massive overdoses.

Abomination and drivel Your article pushing Ivermictin as a “cure” or “preventive” or whatever for COVID was an abomination. There has been a large increase in calls to the Poison Control Line from people taking that compound. It is not approved and has not been shown to be effective against viruses, in particular against COVID-19 or its variants. You did a disservice to the community for writing that drivel, which will hurt more than help. Vaccines should be promoted as the only proven way to stop this pandemic. I hope that soon you will publish an article retracting your views on Ivermectin and set the record straight. STEPHEN COOPER, EMERITUS PROFESSOR, MICROBIOLOGY/IMMUNOLOGY UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

Dr. Pierre Kory responds: The most easily quantifiable way to describe the indefensible lack of “approval” for ivermectin in COVID-19 is to note the actual amount of supportive clinical trials evidence in COVID-19, both randomized (31) and observational (32), including more than 26,000 patients with the near majority of all studies finding at least some important benefit with treatment. Then compare that evidence to the average amount of evidence relied upon to formulate the treatment guidelines of the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA): In a 2010 review of 65 of its most recent guidelines, the IDSA found that 50% of guideline recommendations were made without any trials evidence in support and were termed “expert opinion only.” Another 31% of guideline recommendations were based solely on observational studies, while only 16% of all recommendations were based on at least one randomized controlled trial. In other words, the number of legitimate clinical trials for ivermectin have been far superior to those for the IDSA’s treatment guidelines. Furthermore, ivermectin was approved for the treatment of scabies by the WHO based only on 10 randomized controlled trials, including 852 patients. Despite the fact that these trials found ivermectin inferior to the cream it was being tested against, it still won approval due to its low cost and ease of administration. We cannot recall the last pandemic of scabies that cratered health care systems and societies across the world. Yet, the WHO was able to arrive at such a bold recommendation without the pressure of a pandemic, given it was based on such a seemingly small evidence base. We also emphasize that the NIH Guidelines for COVID-19 have multiple strength levels of recommendation available to them, from weak/“consider” to making use near mandatory. The public should demand from the IDSA and NIH credible explanations for this monstrous anomaly of not arriving at even a weak recommendation for ivermectin, one of the safest, inexpensive and widely available medicines known to man. What you are witnessing is just the most absurd example of a decades-long war on repurposed (a.k.a. “non-profitable”) medicines. Finally, no credible physician or journalist recommends that people self-prescribe with veterinary forms of ivermectin. Experts such as the Front Line COVID-19 Critical Care Alliance have been working tirelessly for months to persuade the public health agencies to provide more specific guidance to physicians on using ivermectin to treat patients with COVID-19. The increasing calls to poison control centers are a direct result of their failure to provide such guidance and education to U.S citizens.

Media blackout a disgrace Thank you for having the courage to write that piece. The media blackout is as disgraceful as the government’s ignoring of the science. And to think this is happening in America is scary. DAVID HEEKIN, JACKSONVILLE

Trio CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

If the full Council approves the deal Sept. 14, the city’s total investment rises to $26.67 million. “It’s gratifying to have a unanimous approval from the Finance (Committee). It’s a big deal. There’s been a lot of time and resources invested in (the Trio),” Atkins said after the vote. “I’m anxious to get through next Tuesday. That’s the last check of the box for us in terms of diligence to close. Then we’ll be mobilized as quickly as we possibly can.” City officials said the lien on the Trio is a $4 million bridge loan from the nonprofit Local Initiatives Support Corporation Jacksonville tied to SouthEast’s renovation of the Barnett National Bank building completed in 2019. That structure is across the street from the Trio. The total lien outstanding on the Trio is $4 million, according to Charles Shealy, LISC Jacksonville real estate and lending program officer. Shealy said Aug. 20 that US Bank, SouthEast’s construction lender on the Barnett, would not approve a second lien on that building. LISC financed against the Trio, owned by Atkins through Laura Trio LLC, to secure the bridge loan. This is the second time the Council could grant SouthEast incentives for the Trio – but the first time the developer would receive any money. In 2017, the Council approved $9.8 million in grants and a tax refund for SouthEast and its then-development partner The

Molasky Group of Companies to renovate the Barnett and the Trio. However, that deal fell through after the DIA said SouthEast missed a construction deadline for the project’s parking garage. The garage project was later taken over by VyStar Credit Union and is under construction. In September 2019, the DIA and SouthEast begin renegotiating the city agreement to ensure the Trio is renovated. The result was a $24.656 million incentives package through the DIA’s Downtown Preservation and Revitalization Program comprising: ■ A $9.377 million five-year forgivable loan. ■ A $10 million five-year forgivable code compliance loan. ■ A $5.279 million deferred principal loan. According to Atkins, losing the Barnett grant made repaying the full LISC loan on the Trio a challenge. “I basically agreed to absorb the second $2 million into the Trio pro forma, so we asked for the initial ($2 million). We thought that was fair given all the work that went into Barnett,” he said. Atkins said the Barnett renovation went over budget by $17 million, reaching $55 million from the estimated $38 million. He said without the city incentives, SouthEast had to apply for federal New Market Tax Credits to finish the project. The credits are a U.S. Department of Treasury program that provides incentives to attract private investment to distressed communities. SouthEast and the DIA had not previously raised the lien as an issue. Attorney Steve Diebenow of Driver, McAfee, Hawthorne &

Diebenow represents Laura Trio LLC. He said Sept. 8 that the city’s $2 million forgivable loan would partially satisfy the LISC loan and allow the nonprofit “to reconfigure their debt that exists on the property today.” It would allow “the entire deal to move forward,” he said. Atkins’ holding company, Southeast Holdings LP, bought the property in March 2013 through Laura Trio LLC. The Trio buildings, built between 1902 and 1912, are historic and contributing structures to the Downtown Jacksonville National Register District, which makes the adaptive reuse project eligible for the DIA historic incentives program. If Ordinance 2021-0453 is approved next week, Atkins said he expects site work to begin by early November. He said foundation work on the addition will be completed simultaneously over 10 to 11 months with structural remediation on the existing Trio buildings. That would ensure it is safe to begin vertical construction, he said. The full project will take 24 months, Atkins said. “This Laura Street Trio project has sort of been the flagship of Downtown development and stalled for number of years,” Council member Michael Boylan Boylan said Sept. 8. He introduced the amendment. “To see this back on course, I think, sends a message to our community as a whole that Downtown development is on its way.” MMENDENHALL@ JAXDAILYRECORD.COM @MIMENDENHALL (904) 356-2466

in memory that a single individual has purchased a highrise building Downtown to put a name on it. Hanania registered Hanania Riverplace LLC with the state July 27. He said that entity, which is part of Hanania Automotive Group, bought the property. The 10-story Class A building has 200,627 rentable square feet and an adjacent six-level, 525-space parking garage. The property comprises 1.92 acres. Hanania has not decided on which floor he will locate his team, which needs 10,000 square feet of space. He said in July he would move about 25 employees there. Hanania Automotive Group now is based among its Blanding Boulevard dealerships. He said one of his first moves will be to recruit tenants. He said the building is 40% occupied, with about 120,000 square feet of space available. He also said the change in ownership will be seamless for existing tenants. “We have a great team in place to help us bring this building to its best use,” he said. Hanania bought the property from an affiliate of Virginiabased Lingerfelt CommonWealth Partners. LCP 1200 Riverplace LLC bought the garage and building, developed in 1985, for $23.625 million in 2016, according to Duval County property records. Hanania said Commonwealth Commercial will continue to manage the property.

Lingerfelt CommonWealth Partners had scheduled the property for auction but Hanania negotiated to buy it. Lingerfelt CommonWealth Partners Vice Pesident Robert Valentine issued a statement July 26. “We are happy that our sale of 1200 Riverplace to Hanania Automotive Group will bring additional jobs and investment into downtown Jacksonville,.” Jacksonville-based fashion retailer Stein Mart Inc. had its headquarters in the building, but the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in August and went out of business, vacating its offices. The Stein Mart name was removed in November. On the Downtown Northbank, Hanania and an investment partner, Joe Hassan, own the six-story historic DyalUpchurch Building at 6 E. Bay St. and the three-story Title & Trust Company of Florida Building at 200 E. Forsyth St. The automotive group employs about 1,000 people among the office and dealerships, including 600 in Jacksonville. Hanania’s group has 16 auto dealerships in Florida, Alabama, Pennsylvania and Tennessee. A 17th is scheduled to open in 2022 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Hanania Automotive Group dealerships include Acura, Audi, Honda, Hyundai, Genesis, Infiniti, Subaru, Volkswagen, Ford, Chevrolet, Mitsubishi and Buick GMC. It also has three collision centers in Florida and Alabama. KMATHIS@ JAXDAILYRECORD.COM
