nline furniture retailer Industry West, which opened a new, larger headquarters in San Marco in March 2018, is moving again, this time to the historic building at 1001 Kings Ave. on the Southbank. “This building brought us an opportunity to plant a bigger footprint here and let people know that we are here to stay,” said Industry West co-founder Jordan England.

The 10-year-old company has grown to 42 employees and sales this year of $35 million to $40 million. Jordan and Anne England started the company as an e-commerce venture, moving from home to leased space and then to San Marco Square. That’s where they and investor-developer Andy Allen bought a 4,300-squarefoot building at 1407 Atlantic Blvd. in 2017, moving in the following year. They anticipate a more than $1 million investment in renovating the three-story, 13,500-square-foot building that was developed before 1912 and hope to move in during summer 2022. “Jacksonville is ready for more urban

September date set for Redwire merger

The Jacksonville-based space technology company is going public in the deal with Genesis Park Acquisition Corp. Genesis Park Acquisition Corp. set Sept. 1 as the date for its shareholders meeting to vote on its merger with Jacksonville-based space technology firm Redwire. Houston-based Genesis Park is a special purpose acquisition company that agreed in March to merge with Redwire. The merger, which should be completed soon after the shareholders meeting, will make Redwire Corp. a public company. After reporting first-quarter revenue of $36 million, Genesis Park said in a news release last week it is confident Redwire will meet its projection of $163 million in revenue for all of 2021. It said Redwire has $280 million in order backlog and $220 million in bids submitted that are awaiting a decision.

Duos Technologies impacted by COVID-19 delays

While moving forward with plans for a new Jacksonville headquarters, Duos Technologies Group Inc.’s business has been impacted by COVID-19 pandemic-related delays. Duos, which produces technology largely for railroads, has seen business slow not only because of contract delays with customers but also the global computer chip shortage, which affects its systems. “We are experiencing delays in receiving necessary components for our rail car inspection portals, including advanced cameras and high-speed servers, which are critical to our inspection portals,” CEO Chuck Ferry said in Duos’

GEE Group revenue surges 43.1% Jacksonville-based staffing company GEE Group Inc. reported a big increase in revenue last week for its third quarter ended June 30, compared with last year when the pandemic shut down operations of many of its clients. The company also said revenue rose from the second quarter this year. Revenue of $38.1 million was 43.1% higher than the previous year and 9.6% higher than the second quarter. GEE Group said adjusted earnings in the quarter were $1.6 million, or 2 cents a share. “There is no question that demand is returning to all our businesses since the lows of last year and we have now seen steady quarterly revenue growth and overall improving bottom line results since last year’s June quarter,” CEO Derek Dewan said in a news release. Dewan said GEE Group is looking for growth. “With a strong balance sheet, positive earnings momentum and enhanced cash flow, we also are preparing for future acquisitions and will remain true to our disciplined M&A strategy,” he said.

Inc. reported a big increase in second-quarter sales as it grows it business. Revenue jumped from $1.3 million a year ago to $6.7 million, and revenue doubled from the first quarter this year. LFTD reported earnings of 14 cents a share, 6 cents higher than the first quarter and reversing a loss from a year ago. LFTD moved its headquarters in January from Lake Forest, Illinois, to a home office space in Jacksonville provided by CEO Gerard Jacobs. It also changed its name during the second quarter from Acquired Sales Corp. to LFTD to reflect the name of its main subsidiary, Lifted Made. Lifted Made produces hempderived products from its facility in Kenosha, Wisconsin. “Having moved into our new facility in Kenosha in March, we have automated production and increased capacity to meet growing demand while expanding vendor relations to reduce costs, a great challenge in this business climate,” LFTD Vice Chairman Nicholas Warrender said in a news release. LFTD announced a $44 million deal in June to buy Irvine, California-based Savage Enterprises. While the deal is not completed, LFTD said Savage is growing rapidly with sales rising from $5.3 million in the first quarter to more than $10 million in the second. It added $5 million in sales in July, the company said.

It has one other Florida station in the Tampa-St. Petersburg market. The company owns 64 stations in 51 U.S. markets. VTrips gets equity investment Ponte Vedra-based VTrips, a vacation rental manager, said Aug. 16 it received a significant minority investment from private equity firm Hudson Hill Capital. VTrips did not announce the size of the investment but said it now has more than $250 million available to pursue acquisitions. VTrips, founded in 2002, said it manages about 3,000 vacation rental properties mainly in the Southeast. “This significant investment represents another key milestone for our company as the

ParkerVision Inc. reported a second-quarter net loss of $4.4 million, or 6 cents a share, as the Jacksonville-based company continues with several patent infringement lawsuits against major electronics manufacturers. ParkerVision said it reached a settlement agreement with a Japanese company called Buffalo Inc., but it has not yet recognized any revenue from that settlement. The company has no current business operations and no revenue. It is focused on pursuing legal action alleging companies are illegally using its patented wireless technology.

quarterly conference call last week, according to a company transcript. “In response, we are taking certain steps to mitigate some of these issues such as obtaining long lead times in advance of formal notice to proceed in order to reduce the overall deployment time for technology systems,” he said. Duos said second-quarter revenue fell 67% to $649,000 and the company doesn’t expect to reach its revenue target of $18 million for the year. It now expects $8 million to $9 million in revenue this year. The company is optimistic about 2022. “To be clear, these challenges have impacted our financial results during the period, but are not expected to affect our long-term growth plans,” Ferry said.

Kaman building new aircraft in Jacksonville

Kaman Corp. said last week it will build a new aircraft at its Jacksonville facility for Transcend Air Corp. The Vy 400 High Speed Vertical Takeoff and Landing aircraft will be used by regional air travel company Transcend to provide fast travel between cities. For example, it said the aircraft will be capable of traveling from Manhattan to Boston in 36 minutes. Kaman did not announce the size or length of the contract.

Newfold acquires SEO company Newfold Digital said last week it acquired Yoast, a search engine optimization plug-in provider for WordPress. development in this part of the city and the core that’s bringing a new design element,” England said. “It’s a really cool building.” After renovations, Industry West will occupy the first two floors with showroom, office and creative space. Breeze Homes, one of the Corner Lot Companies, will occupy the third floor with 12 employees. There eventually could be a retail coffee shop on the ground floor of the southeast Kings Avenue and Prudential Drive building as the Southbank contines to develop pedestrian traffic. The Englands and Allen said a startup restaurant-entertainment concept will lease the San Marco Square building upon the move. Allen said it will consist of their “passion for golf and family.” IT’S ALL ABOUT THE SPACE

Jordan England said Industry West outgrew the San Marco Square showroom and workspace soon after it opened. Industry West’s workforce comprises about 12 people in marketing, HR and leadership in San Marco, with others at a New York City showroom and a leased nearly 125,000-square-foot Cecil Commerce Center distribution center. The Kings Avenue structure will provide room for 28 people, allowing the company to buildout more of its internal team. The Englands look forward to “putting our design stamp on it and creating a vibrant workspace environment like this so people can be creative and keep working on what we’re doing here, which is building a furniture brand that’s accessible to consumers and businesses alike,” England said. Allen said the area is referred to as the Design District because of architects and other creative firms that operate there, “so it is very fitting.” The e-commerce company describes itself at industrywest.com. It “curates modern, artisancrafted furniture and decor, with an emphasis on high-design. Our approach is guided by what we interpret as new classics—beautiful, functional pieces capable of becoming timeless.” Industry West works with manufacturers worldwide for furniture such as tables, desks, chairs, sofas, barstools and other products and accessories. It serves restaurants, hotels, high-tech startups and residences throughout North America. Customers include Google, Uber and Chanel and local clients such as M Shack, Orsay, Taverna and Bold Bean Coffee Roasters. Industry West’s showroom area allows customers to browse the company’s collection, and trade professionals a location to work with the team on new projects. At Kings Avenue, Industry West anticipates flexible space that accommodates photography and creative uses for social media content and other purposes. England said Industry West has outsourced marketing and website work. “We’re trying to now bring some of those jobs back in-house, so we’re going to hire quite a few marketing and folks in development.” He expects needing six to eight people. The Jacksonville Historic Preservation Commission approved a Certificate of Appropriateness for

NEW HOME FOR INDUSTRY WEST The owners of Industry West along with Corner Lot Companies paid $2.25 million in July for the building at 1001 Kings Ave. on the Downtown Southbank. After more than three years at 1407 Atlantic Blvd. in San Marco Square, Industry West, which sells furniture online, plans to renovate and move into the historic structure next summer.

the project in June for changes to the at least 109-year-old structure’s exterior. The building is not in a locally designated historic district but is a local landmark. Matthew Snyder with Bold Line Design LLC filed the application on behalf of the previous owner, Upchurch-Sutton Inc. The six changes include storefront facade alterations; new canopies and door openings; a fire escape/roof access replacement; new signage; and a new skylight. The Jacksonville Planning and Development Department Historic Preservation Section will need to approve final plans before permitting. Allen said the group intends to open up the interior to provide more natural light. The landmark status application shows the building was developed before 1912. It is one of the few remaining commercial buildings reflecting the old City of South Jacksonville of 1907-32. At one point early on, a hardware store and a dry goods store occupied the first floor, with six apartments on the top floors. It recently housed offices. The group bought the property from Upchurch-Sutton Inc., which acquired the building in April 1999 for $250,000, property records show. City Council District 5 representative LeAnna Cumber is encouraged that the project will bring more activity to the Kings Avenue corridor. “The more activation and life that comes in, the safer the community,” she said. Allen and the Englands intend to continue their property investments in Jacksonville, ranging from historic redevelopment to new construction.

more direct-to-consumer sales. That mix now is more 50-50. Anne England said requests for proposals and qualifications are returning, “and next should be the money.” ROOTS AND BRANCHES

The Englands founded Industry West because the young couple needed some dining chairs and couldn’t find what they wanted at a favorable price. The couple lived in Beaufort, South Carolina, and began looking for the chairs for their new home. Jordan England connected with manufacturers and found the chairs they wanted. They realized that identifying the best furniture for individual and corporate needs could be a business. They registered England Trading Co. LLC with the state in 2011. They had returned to Jacksonville, where they had lived for a

while a few years earlier. “Industry West” was chosen because it represents the entrepreneurial spirit and the creativity of the people and companies they want to foster. They started as a home-based business and moved in 2013 to rented space at 1538 Hendricks Ave., next to Hightide Burrito Co. In February 2017, England Allen Holdings LLC paid $904,000 for the San Marco Square building, which formerly was Stellers Gallery, and renovated it. England said most of the company’s business has been outside of the region. While it does a good amount in Florida, mostly Orlando and Miami, England said California and New York are major markets. The Englands and Allen cite reasons for Industry West to remain growing in Jacksonville. One is JaxPort, which makes importing easier from the international factories that produce

the furniture. While Industry West brings in some shipments through other ports, “we need to use this port as our main port,” Jordan England said. “The port here is much better to work with.” Another reason is the opportunity to be part of the Southbank development and redevelopment. “You have all of this critical mass. It’s synergy and the domino effect,” Allen said. “It’s important to have local companies be part of that.” A third reason for Jacksonville is that Allen said the city needs Industry West. “We need you guys to help make Jacksonville cool,” Allen said to the Englands. “Your brand, your design, your furniture, everything.” KMATHIS@JAXDAILYRECORD.COM @MATHISKB (904) 356-2466

COVID IMPACT

COVID presented challenges, but the Englands are seeing some business returning. About 70% of Industry West’s sales historically has been business-to-business, including major hotels and large restaurant groups. At the start of the pandemic, that business shut down. England said Industry West moved to

THE MARBUT REPORT

Local attorneys are ranked No. 1 in the nation

MAX MARBUT ASSOCIATE EDITOR

The Jacksonville chapter of ABOTA is Chapter of the Year, Ingrid Suarez Osborn recognized by HUD.

Special to the Daily Record

From left, American Board of Trial Advocates Jacksonville 2021 President David Dunlap; Wayne Hogan; Joshua Whitman; R. Scott Costantino; ABOTA Jacksonville 2020 President Corinne Hodak; FLABOTA Immediate Past President Judge Nelly Khouzam; ABOTA Jacksonville President-elect Brian Currie; and Thomas Edwards.

Despite the restriction on person-to-person contact because of the pandemic, 2020 was an active year for the Jacksonville Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates. ABOTA’s national board awarded the 2020 Chapter of the Year Award in the 100 or more members category to the group of plaintiffs’ and defense civil attorneys for its community involvement. “It was the first year we passed the 100-member mark. I am so happy for our chapter,” said Corrine Hodak, 2020 ABOTA Jacksonville president. Hodak said the chapter started the year with a Trial Academy before the restrictions went into effect in March. In partnership with the Chester Bedell Inn of Court, chapter members who are experienced trial lawyers,

joined by local judges, presented a three-day instructional program for attorneys with five or fewer years of experience arguing cases in court. “I think the lawyers learned as much as the students learned and they established mentoring relationships,” Hodak said. The chapter also continued its tradition of supporting civics education in public schools. The annual “law school” programs for middle school teachers and students were presented on video, as was the annual literacy program for elementary school students. For the youngest students, the chapter provided a video presentation and copies of the book “Gracie for President” to 130 classrooms, Hodak said. The American Bar Association selected Jacksonville to be one of just a few cities that

would display the ABA’s 19th Amendment traveling exhibit, part of the annual national Law Day celebration. When COVID-19 closed the Duval County Courthouse, where the exhibit was installed, chapter members wrote a script and produced a video tour that was made available to Duval County Public Schools. “We had 80% of our membership participate in some program or in some way. We came together for the good of the community,” Hodak said.

sel’s 22nd annual Leigh Curry Award, the highest national award in OGC. Honorees are recognized for sustained excellence in the provision of legal services and exemplifying standards of

excellence and integrity. “It was a nice surprise,” Osborn said. Chief counsel in the Jacksonville Field Office, Osborn joined HUD in 2002. She has closed nearly 650 multifamily and health care real estate transactions. Osborn presented at the HUD Closing School in Washington, D.C., and served on the Closing School Planning Committee. Locally, Osborn served as a volunteer judge in the 4th Judicial Circuit’s Teen Court program, a pre-arrest diversion program for at-risk youth. FIRST INSERTION JACKSONVILLE HOUSING FINANCE AUTHORITY SINGLE FAMILY MORTGAGE CREDIT CERTIFICATE PROGRAM The Jacksonville Housing Finance Authority (the “Issuer”), hereby announces its intention to sponsor a program to reduce home loan financing costs within Duval County, Florida (the “County”). The Issuer intends to establish a mortgage credit certificate program which will entitle first-time homebuyers and borrowers of qualified home improvement loans and qualified rehabilitation loans to a federal income tax credit (the “Program”). A tax credit is a direct reduction of taxes due. Under the Program a homebuyer would receive a mortgage credit certificate entitling homebuyers to reduce their taxes by ten percent (10%) to fifty percent (50%) (such percentage to be determined by the Authority from time to time) of the amount of interest paid on their home loan (not to exceed $2,000 per year if the credit percentage exceeds 20%). The tax credit is available each year that the borrower continues to live in the home financed under the Program. In order to qualify for the Program, federal law requires that a homebuyer satisfy each of the following guidelines: 1. Principal Residence. The homebuyer must occupy the home financed under the Program as his/her principal residence within a reasonable period, not to exceed 60 days, after the financing is provided. A principal residence is a home occupied primarily for residential purposes. A principal residence does not include a home used as an investment property, as a recreation home or a home 15 percent or more of the total area of which is used in a trade or business. 2. First-Time Homebuyer. Each homebuyer must be a first-time homebuyer. Any person who has not owned his/her principal residence at any time during the three years prior to closing a loan financed in connection with the Program is considered a first-time homebuyer. This requirement does not apply to loans in certain areas designated as targeted areas (collectively, the “Targeted Area”) or to qualified home improvement loans and qualified rehabilitation loans or to loans to veterans if such veteran has not previously qualified for and received financing under either a mortgage credit certificate program or a qualified mortgage revenue bond program. 3. Purchase Price. Under the Program, the purchase price for residences may not exceed 90 percent (110 percent with respect to residences located in Targeted Areas) of the average area purchase price applicable to the residence. For this purpose, the “average area purchase price” is based upon the average purchase price of single family residences determined pursuant to applicable federal law with respect to both new and existing one, two, three and four unit residences. The current maximum purchase prices for homes under the Program are as follows: Non-Targeted Area Targeted Area $275,000 $275,000 These limitations are subject to adjustment periodically. 4. New Mortgage. The mortgage loan financed in connection with the Program is required to be a new mortgage loan and may not replace a prior mortgage loan on the home (whether or not previously repaid). The mortgage credit certificates are available in connection with any not to exceed 30 year, fixed rate mortgage loan which is (i) a government loan eligible for purchase by GNMA, (ii) a conventional loan eligible for purchase by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac, or (iii) a special loan offered by lending institutions and approved by the Issuer. Any lending institution is eligible to provide mortgage loans in connection with the Program as long as they are willing to follow Program requirements. A list of lenders that have agreed to follow Program requirements can be found at www.ehousingplus.com. 5. Income. A “qualified rehabilitation” is a rehabilitation of a building that meets certain specific requirements as to the building’s age, the amount of the structure retained in place and the expenditures for the rehabilitation as a percentage of the mortgagor’s basis in the residence. Under the Program, mortgage credit certificates will be issued to eligible borrowers on a first-come, firstserved basis. The certificates are available in connection with only those types of new mortgages as discussed in paragraph 4 above.
