decade after construction halted on the 18-story Berkman Plaza II condominium project, a buyer wants to transform the Downtown structure into a hotel. Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry confirmed Tuesday that a developer, which he did not identify, bought the unfinished Berkman Plaza II at 500 E. Bay St. Downtown. Atlanta-based Choate Construction Co. has owned the building and the 2-acre site since 2014 but did not immediately respond to calls or emails. A deed was not recorded as of Tuesday afternoon. The mayor said the developer plans to renovate what’s left of the concrete structure into a hotel, with a parking garage and entertainment element. “For three years now we’ve been work-

City reviewers are looking over construction permit applications for the $40 million West Kernan Apartments at 12517 Beach Blvd. Waypoint Residential proposes the 301-unit project on 26.3 acres

it has under contract at northwest Kernan and Beach boulevards. Boca Raton-based Waypoint said construction is projected to start in the third quarter with completion in the first quarter of 2020. Waypoint Residential is headquartered in Boca Raton and has regional offices in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Denver and Stamford, Connecticut.

Rebecca Willis, assistant vice president of marketing and communications, said the luxury apartments will include a clubhouse with a resort-style pool, grilling stations, an enclosed outdoor dog run and park, groundfloor garage parking and wraparound porches overlooking a lake. Permit applications show 161 one-bedroom, 124 two-bedroom
