Vendors showcase products for RNC Daily Record At an event for the host committee to choose preferred businesses, owners say they’re seeking opportunity, want to make up for COVID-19 losses.

About 77 business owners gathered at the Prime F. Osborn III Convention Center on July 9 to showcase their products in hopes of being selected as vendors for the Republican National Convention. The RNC is planned for Aug. 24-27 Downtown at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena. Vendors at the showcase said they did not know what the planned marketplace would look like, where it would be, or how many businesses would participate, but welcomed the opportunity for a boost in revenue. “I look at it as tourism coming to the city,” said Lee Livingston, owner of The 3 G’s Grill & Soul Food Catering in Jacksonville. “If they need our services, we want to be available to them. I just look at it as a great opportunity for our company.” The RNC Host Committee invited some businesses that applied to be vendors at the convention to the showcase. The first 75 or so businesses that responded to the invitation could attend the showcase. Convention planners invited those that fit the needs they said they would have. The showcase featured caterers, bakeries, florists, event planners and breweries, among others. Members of the host committee and delegations walked

Terracon Consultants consolidating its offices

Company is taking space in the former State Farm Operations Center in Baymeadows. An environmental engineering firm is moving toward reusing part of the closed State Farm Jacksonville Operations Center in Baymeadows. The city is reviewing a permit application for Terracon Consultants Inc. to use 35,112 square feet at 8001 Baymeadows Way. Holtsinger Construction Inc. is shown as the contractor for the estimated $909,362 buildout. David Haynes AIA Architect is the architect. Corporate spokesperson Brenda Kramer said July 8 that Terracon likely will move in the fourth quarter and consolidate two Jacksonville office locations. The move will result in slightly more space, she said. The company has 85 employees in the Jacksonville area. She said Terracon expects to have one of the largest materials testing labs in the area at 7,100 square feet. Gunster law firm moving to Wells Fargo Center After 12 years at Enterprise Center at 225 Water St., the Jacksonville office of the Gunster, Yoakley & Stewart law firm is moving to Wells Fargo Center. Dav-Lin Interior Contractors Inc. will build-out 38,562 square feet of space on the 22nd and 23rd floors at 1 Independent Drive at a job cost of nearly $2.7 million, according to permits issued July 4 and July 6 by the city. “We are committed to Jacksonville, obviously,” said Bill Adams, managing partner in Jacksonville. The new space is designed for up to 35 attorneys and staff. The firm plans to move by the end of the year, he said.

employees at the site in 2014 before starting to downsize. It closed the location in late 2019, relocating some functions to other facilities in the country. Terracon would be just one tenant in the 302,440-square-foot building and it would sublease its space. State Farm sold the building in November 2013 but continues to hold a master lease that expires in November 2028. Michal Brower, the spokesperson for State Farm in Florida, referred questions about the sublease to Terracon. “We can share that we have multiple tenants and we are committed to a multi-tenant sublease strategy for the remainder of our master lease at this time,” Brower said July 9. She said State Farm has more than 150,000 rentable square feet available for sublease at the building. CBRE is the leasing agent. A brochure shows one space is leased and the remaining parts of the building can be subdivided into several spaces. GuideWell Connect uses space there, according to signs on the property. The structure was built in 1976 and renovated in 1989. Terracon says on its website it is a 100% employee-owned consulting engineering firm that has provided engineering services since 1965. It says it has evolved into a multi-

through the showcase to select the vendors. Businesses not invited to the showcase still can be chosen as a vendor, and businesses can continue to apply. The host committee does not have a deadline for applications and will be signing contracts up until the week of the convention. Businesses selected from the showcase will participate in a marketplace during the week of the convention. They must meet deadlines, provide a certain amount of products, and their products must be made in the U.S. They also will be placed on a preferred vendor list that delegations and other organizations involved with the convention can use for their own events. Booths in the marketplace are $500 and vendors keep the profits. Amy Hales, owner of Rummies & Yummies, said she was not sure what criteria would be used to select vendors. The Jacksonville-based bakery sells rum cakes online. After seeing revenue decline because

Terracon maintains an advanced geotechnical laboratory that it says is regularly evaluated, inspected, and validated by agencies such as the Florida Department of Transportation, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials. It says the laboratory and drilling resources are complemented by a Jacksonville staff of more than 50 employees and 11 registered professional engineers. She said she had concerns about safety if she were selected as a vendor, but is doing what she can to lessen the risk. She kept her rum cakes in sealed containers, wore a mask and planned on wiping down her vendor table as people passed through. “Obviously, there’s additional risk because you’re around more people, but you have to take the precautions,” she said. Anita Comisky, owner of Amelia Toffee Company, said she hopes to be part of the marketplace and be a vendor for the convention’s welcome gift bags. With many attendees planning on staying in Amelia Island the week of the convention, Comisky said she hopes it will bring additional revenue with the increase of tourism in the area.
