Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry said bringing a portion of the Aug. 24-27 Republican National Convention to Northeast Florida in August will be a boost for local small businesses. He held an early morning virtual news conference June 12 just hours after the Republican National Committee announced President Donald Trump will accept the 2020 GOP presidential nomination in Jacksonville. Curry said restaurants, breweries and small retailers, which were shut down by social distancing and crowd restrictions early in the COVID-19 pandemic, should benefit from the RNC. Larger businesses should too, he said. “Many (business owners) tell me the reopening is happening and they’re starting to get back on their feet, but they’re struggling,” Curry said. “This is a tremendous opportunity for them and their families and their customers to get money back in the economy and get people back to work.” Trump was to deliver his speech in Charlotte, North Carolina, but disagreements with officials there over COVID-19 capacity restrictions led to Trump and RNC officials teasing Jacksonville as a “top contender” for an alternate site, the Florida GOP said in a June 9 tweet. All of the convention is not moving to Jacksonville. A Duval GOP spokesperson said the business portion of the convention, including the party delegates’ official vote on Trump’s nomination, will remain in Charlotte. “We’re going to get a majority of the economic development in the events,” Curry said. ing majority” would be in Jacksonville. “The grand spectacle, what everyone perceives as the convention, the days of speeches culminating in the president, that will all be here,” he said. Black said the three-day event concluding Aug. 27 would feature numerous speakers with numerous off-site events and dinners. A lot is still in the works. Black said that companies and vendors interested in offering their services should contact the Republican Party of Duval County offices at (904) 396-4233. He said precautions will be taken to address COVID-19, including temperature checks and the sanitizing of facilities. There will be “a comprehensive plan to
Former two-term City Council member and past President Greg Anderson joined JAXUSA Partnership as vice president of business development. Anderson served as an at-large Council member from 2011-19 and as president for the 2015-16 year. He said he left TIAA Bank in January and joined JAXUSA, the economic d eve l o p m e n t Anderson division of JAX Chamber, in March. Anderson works with Aaron Bowman, JAXUSA senior vice president of business development. Bowman is serving his second Council term representing District 3. He was elected in 2015 and was Council president 2018-19. JAXUSA announced Anderson’s appointment March 24 and said he joined March 23. Anderson manages financial and professional services projects and clients interested in relocation and expansion business in the seven-county region. It said that Anderson is a 35-year veteran of the financial services industry, making him “a natural fit.” Financial services is a JAXUSA targeted industry. JAXUSA said during Anderson’s Council terms, he “partnered with JAXUSA often to help pass

Republican Party of Duval County Chair Dean Black said the organization is ecstatic. “My heart is filled with joy because Jacksonville is going to host the Republican National Convention and that is a great, great day for our city,” Black said at a news conference June 12 at the party’s offices at 3520 St Johns Bluff Road, Suite No. 3. Black said the bureaucratic part of the convention would remain in Charlotte, North Carolina, but that the “overwhelm-
Murray Hill self-storage project approved The city approved construction June 10 for a $5.83 million self-storage project at 3445 Plymouth St. in Murray Hill where a Jones College campus was demolished. The site is at northeast Edgewood Avenue South and Plymouth Street. The Silverfield Group and Morales Group are developing the three-story, 788-unit building of almost 98,000 square feet. Development is proposed in phases, with the self-storage and parking in phase one. The retail space construction will follow when a user is identified. They also plan a 5,000-square-foot retail building.

days to secure the money needed to pay for costs associated with bringing Trump’s nomination acceptance to Jacksonville. Curry said June 12 the RNC “is not an event that is paid for by the city of Jacksonville. Members of a nonprofit host committee will be announced soon, which Curry said will raise “tens of millions of dollars” from private donations to pay for convention expenses. Federal and state law enforcement will be brought in for security, and Curry said Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams will work with law enforcement agencies from surrounding counties. The Charlotte City Council accepted a $50 million security grant from the U.S. Department of Justice in April connected to hosting the RNC, according to The Charlotte Observer newspaper and news site. It also said the Charlotte host committee was charged with raising almost $70 million for the event. Curry said he didn’t know how the security money would be transferred to Jacksonville, but said the city could use cash on hand, dollars typically used as a stopgap for FEMA emergency relief aid during hurricane recovery, if the government can’t reimburse security costs in a timely manner. “We don’t expect to get into that situation which we’ve had in hurricanes. We don’t expect to get into that situation in this event. We’ve always gotten reimbursed and gotten reimbursed timely since I’ve been mayor of the city related to federal government commitments,” Curry said. The host committee released a statement June 11 estimating the RNC would bring more than $100 million into the local economy, based on studies from past large-scale events. Curry said June 12 that the numbers were based on available data from events like the

keep us safe,” he said. When asked about wearing masks and social distancing, Black said, “We will take precautions consistent with those recommended by our leadership at that time.” “We have a government that has a demonstrated record of dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic,” Black said. We are used to hurricanes, sometimes back-toback. We have exceptional Republican governments and an exceptional business community, a Downtown that is second to none, and we are going to show that off to the world.” Black said he refused to accept hosting the event as divisive.

legislation that would announce eight projects encompassing 2,100 jobs during his presidency as well as countless others while in office.” “With Greg’s experience in both the industry and government leadership, we are fortunate to welcome him to the team as we advance our business development efforts in financial and professional services,” said JAXUSA President Aundra Wallace in the release. Anderson joins the business development staff six months after 17-year JAX Chamber veteran Cathy Chambers, JAXUSA senior vice president of strategy and business development, left in September to take a position with Florida Power & Light Co. Anderson has a bachelor of business administration degree from the University of Georgia Terry College of Business and a master of arts in liberal studies, with a focus on leadership studies, from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.
Curry said he didn’t know until it was announced by media that the national GOP settled on Jacksonville over other bids from Nashville, Tennessee, and Savannah, Georgia, as the site for Trump’s acceptance speech. Curry said in the news release June 11 that Director of Intergovernmental Affairs Jordan Elsbury and Chief Administrative Officer Brian Hughes worked to bring the event to Jacksonville. Curry said Elsbury, Hughes and Visit Jacksonville President and CEO Michael Corrigan secured more than 10,000 hotel rooms and worked with ASM Global, the manager of VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena, to line up venues. The city will have COVID-19 safety protocols in place in and around the event venue, Curry said, but his administration had not released details June 12. When asked by a reporter from Politico if Jacksonville had to make upfront concessions to forgo face masks when Trump gives his speech, a condition the president publicly pushed back on with the North Carolina governor, Curry did address face coverings specifically. Curry said “there are no guarantees” in public safety. “Clearly, the RNC wants a large event with a lot of people. I want that too. By the way, I want sports back with a lot of people in arenas and stadiums, and it seems we’re heading in that direction. That’s how we’re planning and reacting given the data that we have,” Curry said. “At the same time, I want to get people back to work in this city,” Curry said. “This is a major event that will bring jobs and economic recovery to a whole lot of people in this city.”

“It’s only divisive if you choose to make it so. There is nothing wrong with every citizen of Jacksonville joining hands with their brothers and sisters and saying look, we may disagree politically, but we are all American, and together we can celebrate the grand spectacle,” he said. Black said the next step for the organization was recruiting volunteers. “We will need thousands and thousands and thousands of volunteers,” he said. He said past conventions have had 7,000 volunteers. Black said so far there are 800. Those interested can visit rncvolunteer.com “We should all be overjoyed. This is a great day for all of the citizens of Jacksonville and I mean exactly that,” he said. MZICKUHR@JAXDAILYRECORD.COM (904) 356-2466
Most recently, Anderson was the community development director for TIAA Bank, managing the company’s efforts in business development, nonprofits and government relations, according to the release. The New York-based TIAA financial services company moved the headquarters of TIAA Bank to Jacksonville after it acquired EverBank in June 2017, and the bank employed 1,117 people in Jacksonville at the end of 2018. Anderson’s LinkedIn page shows he was an EverBank market leader from August 2006 through January 2020, and also was community development director from 2014 through March. TIAA said in May it is offering voluntary separation packages to 75% of its U.S. employees. However, the company is not saying how many jobs it expects to cut. It also is not giving details on how many jobs may be lost in specific offices or business units. KMATHIS@JAXDAILYRECORD.COM @MATHISKB (904) 356-2466
