The U.S. economic expansion will be 10 years old next month and if it continues into July, it will become the longest ever, says Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics. During a presentation May 21 to the World Affairs Council of Jacksonville, Zandi said he fully expects the expansion to reach that record length and beyond. “I think in the next six to 12 months, the outlook is good,” he said. “Barring the trade war going off the rails, the economy is fundamentally in good shape,” Zandi said at the event at The River

City Council President Aaron Bowman on Tuesday nominated At-Large Group 3 council member Tommy Hazouri to serve as the group’s vice president in 2019-20. Council members voted 18-0 to support Hazouri, a Democrat, as the next vice president to serve with newly elected President Scott Wilson, a Republican who represents District 4. The only council member who did not vote was the absent Danny Becton, who represents District 11.

Hazouri, 74, is a former mayor, state legislator and Duval County School Board member who is completing his first term on council. The next four-year council terms start July 1. The next council year will run through June 30, 2020. Hazouri supported Republican Mayor Lenny Curry’s successful reelection bid this year. Auto dealer Terry Taylor intends to develop the Pickettville Chrysler Dodge Ram Jeep dealership in West Jacksonville. The city is reviewing a permit application for construction of the almost 51,000-square-foot project on 9.8 acres at 7030 Commonwealth Ave. at a cost of $8.5 million. The location is at southwest Commonwealth and Interstate 295, near Pickettville Road. No contractor is listed. Dasher Hurst Architects is the architect. The permit shows the design of a dealership that includes a car showroom with front offices, customer lounge and service drive with a service shop. The plan shows a Chrysler Dodge Ram showroom and a Jeep showroom. In February, TT of Pickettville Inc. bought the property for $4 million from N.G. Wade Investment Co. Flagler joining the Northeast Florida trade zone Flagler County is joining Northeast Florida’s Foreign Trade Zone No. 64. The current members are Bradford, Columbia, Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau, Putnam and St. Johns counties. Businesses in the trade zone have access to JaxPort’s seaport, as well as reduced or eliminated fees on imported goods and materials until they leave the zone. Flagler will have to be approved by the U.S. Foreign Trade Zone Board, which can take up to 30 days.
