“I truly think we will come out of this stronger and go back to business similar to the way we did business before,” said Steve Jacobs, owner of office furniture store Interior Fusion at 8409 Baymeadows Road.

Steve Jacobs, owner of office furniture store Interior Fusion, said the pandemic has not changed his business a lot, but realizes that could change. Jacobs said his business at 8409 Baymeadows Road is considered an essential service and did not close during COVID-19. “We have to stay open for people working from home who want to buy a desk or a chair to keep working,” he said.

Interior Fusion supplies office furniture primarily for commercial use, with only 5% of sales from walk-in traffic, which slowed from the coronavirus. “For us it’s been business as usual. I don’t know if it’s going to affect us a month or two later on the back end,” Jacobs said. Jacobs said Interior Fusion is working on large projects with churches and other clients that continued their work. He said those customers knew “this would be over sooner or later, so they had to continue to buy to keep up with their plans or fall behind the eight ball.” The company started with a staff of three, including Jacobs. “We all pitch in to do whatever it takes to get things done,” he said.

KEEPING CLOSE – FROM A DISTANCE On May 4, the state began a phased reopening of some businesses shut down to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The Daily Record is reporting on small businesses as they confront the challenges of social distancing and financial hardships brought on by the pandemic and its aftermath.

With the COVID-19 pandemic reaching a new phase of businesses reopening, Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta President Raphael Bostic is focusing on three questions about the recovery. The first two concern how the country deals with the continuing public health crisis and how businesses go about the reopening, Bostic said May 20 during a webinar hosted by JAXUSA Bostic Partnership. “The third question is, really, to what extent is the relief working?” he said. Numerous government programs are providing financial help to unemployed people and businesses struggling to keep going during the pandemic. Bostic said if those programs are working as intended, companies will bring their employees back from furlough. “If we can do that, if we can make as many of those job losses temporary as possible, there’s a very good chance we could make this recovery happen in a robust way,” he said. Bostic said the Federal Reserve’s role is providing a bridge to get the economy through the crisis. “What we’ve tried to do is really be mindful that before the virus arrived, the fundamentals of this economy were quite

Vacation rentals reopen in Duval Vacation rentals in Duval County, including Airbnb units, can reopen after state-mandated COVID-19 closures. Florida’s Department of Business and Professional Regulation approved the city’s plan to reopen rentals May 20. “Tourism is a major part of our local and state economies,” Mayor Lenny Curry said in a statement. “By getting these businesses back up and running in a responsible way, we are helping employees and their families get back on their feet and return to some sense of normalcy.” Rental operators must follow social distancing requirements.

strong,” he said. The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity reported May 22 that the April jobless rate in the Jacksonville metropolitan area was 11.2%, a 10-year high. Nonfarm businesses reported a loss of 77,400 jobs from their payrolls from March to April, a 10.6% decline. In a conference call with reporters after the webinar, Bostic said he won’t be drawing conclusions from the unemployment data. “We know the numbers are going to be bad. But we also know they’re driven by something other than the fundamentals,” he said. The Fed’s strategy has been to preserve the fundamentals so the strengths of the economy will remain in place “when we get to the other side of the pandemic,” Bostic said in the webinar In the early days of the crisis, the Fed was focused on the financial markets as stock prices plummeted. “There were real questions about whether those markets would continue to function,” Bostic said. However, the markets did not need financial help from the Fed or others. “They weren’t turning to the credit markets so those could be preserved for other things,” Bostic said. That prompted the Fed to provide support for businesses in a way the nation’s

“We have been working together for 15 years.” In January, they added an accounting employee and during the height of the pandemic in April added a salesperson and a marketing employee. The business maintained regular hours, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday. Jacobs applied for Paycheck Protection Program funding because of the “uncertainty of not knowing what was going to happen to the business and how long we could stay healthy without it.” He understands the PPP funding guidelines and will use it if needed to keep payroll stable or take it as a loan. Jacobs said the office furniture industry should not change much because of the pandemic. “I don’t think remote working due to the pandemic is going to affect office size and the need for office furniture,” he said. “I think that anybody working from home for two months, if you have a spouse and kids, will be ready to go back to work in offices.” With the easing of work-at-home restrictions, “we think our workflow is going to pick up because the procurement agents will now be back in the office, ready to pick back up on projects that they had to step away from unexpectedly back when the quarantine orders went into place,” Jacobs said. As to effects of the pandemic on workspace design, Jacobs said, “both social distancing and hygiene will certainly be taken into consideration when designing workspaces. Knowing this, since early

central bank had not done before, he said. It includes a Main Street Lending Program to provide help for small and medium-size businesses. Although it is designed for smaller companies, the program is open to businesses with 15,000 employees or less and annual revenue of $5 billion or less. As he looks for signs of recovery, one aspect Bostic will be watching is “basic foot traffic.” Businesses may reopen but he is watching to see if consumers feel safe enough to go back into stores and restaurants. “You really have to get that public health issue in place,” Bostic said. “I really think if we can restore the confidence that the average consumer has and do that quickly, then the fundamental confidence will be preserved,” he said. Bostic also is watching how businesses adapt to the “new normal” of limited customer capacity and social distancing. “That adaptability is going to be an important additional factor in what our recovery is going to look like,” he said. The JAXUSA webinar was held in place of the economic development organization’s quarterly luncheon. JAXUSA is the economic development division of JAX Chamber. Bostic said he was supposed to be in the Jacksonville area all week because of an annual Fed financial markets conference in Amelia Island that was canceled. “I was really disappointed that conference didn’t happen.” MBASCH@JAXDAILYRECORD.COM

April we’ve been working really close with our suppliers looking for ways to create a safer work environment.” “Offices will be going vertical, making walls higher using Plexiglas and glass to existing shorter walls in order to create physical barriers between coworkers. Like face masks, Plexiglas is in very high demand right now with most of it being used in the workplace. Possibly an alltime high for Plexiglas,” he said. Jacobs said some companies will decide to extend work-from-home for their staff. “Realizing this, we teamed up with one of our furniture suppliers, AIS, to create personalized work-from-home stations that can meet the various space requirements.” “I truly think we will come out of this stronger and go back to business similar to the way we did business before,” he said. Jacobs worked in sales at Florida Office Interiors when it opened in 1990. In September 2017, the owners sold the business to a New York investment group. Jacobs said the group shut down the business. Jacobs, with Tampa-area business partner Rich Fendley, acquired the business from Florida Office Interiors in September 2019. Fendley owns the Interior Fusion office furniture business in Largo and welcomed the opportunity to expand to Northeast Florida. “I was a part of it so I could not let it go. I had too many clients out there. Some of the clients I still do business with from 1990. I got together with some employees and reopened,” a few days after it closed at the same location with the new name, Interior Fusion, Jacobs said. “We didn’t miss a beat, kept the current clients intact,” Jacobs said. The first public hearing is being conducted pursuant to Chapter 190, Florida Statutes. The purpose of the second public hearing is to consider the imposition of special assessments to fund the District’s proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2020/2021 upon the lands located within the District, a depiction of which lands is shown below; to consider the adoption of an assessment roll; and to provide for the levy, collection, and enforcement of the assessments. The District’s special assessments are annually recurring assessments and are in addition to previously levied debt assessments. Below is the proposed schedule of operation and maintenance assessments for FY 2020/2021; the increase in the amount of proposed assessments from the current fiscal years assessments is primarily attributable to additional funding for capital reserves. Amounts are preliminary and subject to change at the hearing and in any future year. The amounts are subject to early payment discount as afforded by law. The proposed FY 2020/2021 operations and maintenance assessment for each of the 680 single-family lots within the District boundaries is $935.64 (gross). The special assessments are collected on each lot owner’s annual real estate tax bill issued by Duval County (City of Jacksonville), Florida. Failure to pay the assessments will cause a tax certificate to be issued against the property, which may result in a loss of title. All affected property owners have the right to appear at the public hearings and the right to file written objections with the District within twenty (20) days of publication of this notice. The public hearings and meeting are open to the public and will be conducted in accordance with the provisions of Florida law for community development districts.
