MICHAEL FREED

Former FIS execs surface at NCR

Winner hopes to grow his faith, “make the profession a little better.” By Max Marbut Associate Editor

T

he Jacksonville Bar Association recognized Michael Freed as the 2018 Daily Record Lawyer of the Year at its annual meeting and Law Day luncheon on Thursday. Freed has practiced law since 1995 and joined Gunster’s Jacksonville office in 2014, but was selected not for his substantial career accomplishments, but for his dedication to helping people who can’t help themselves. He said as he accepted the award that his goals in life are to grow his faith “and make the profession a little better.” In June, he laced up his shoes and ran six marathons in six days, covering the 157 miles from the state Supreme Court building in Tallahassee to the steps the Duval County Courthouse to raise funds for Jacksonville Area Legal Aid. Along the way, Freed gained support from members of the legal community and raised nearly $70,000 to be donated to JALA, $30,000 more than the goal he set when he began the project. JWLA triumphs at annual JBA golf tournament Lessons, practice pay off for group competing in event for first time. By Max Marbut Associate Editor When an attorney has a case that’s headed for trial, the key to prevailing is preparation. The Jacksonville Women Lawyers Association took that same approach with the group’s inaugural entry into the annual Jacksonville Bar Association Member Golf Tournament. When the scorecards were tallied Thursday at Deerwood Golf & Country Club, the group’s two foursomes accepted the trophies for first place in the women’s division.

The team of Katie Borello, Patricia Dodson Lauren Johnston and Randall Richardson, husband of JWLA President

Jennifer Richardson and a fully vested member of the association, turned in a 64 to win the net score title.

First place gross score, 80 strokes, was carded by the team of Kayla Haines, Francine Palmeri, Lynne Rhode and Cyndy Trimmer. When the association decided to make its debut at the event, team members spent four weekends taking private group lessons at Blue Sky Golf Club and then competed against each other in an informal scramble to warm up for the tournament, said Jennifer Richardson. Taking home trophies on the first try has inspired Team JWLA to head back to the practice range for more work on the fine points of the game. “We definitely need to do this again next year,” Richardson said. mmarbut@jaxdailyrecord.com (904) 356-2466

A month after retiring as chairman of Fidelity National Information Services Inc., Frank Martire last week joined another financial technology firm, along with another former FIS executive. Atlanta-based NCR Corp. named Martire executive chairman and also announced it hired Michael Hayford as chief executive officer. Hayford served as executive vice president and chief financial officer of Jacksonville- Martire based FIS from 2009 to 2013, when Martire was CEO of the bank technology company. H i s a sso ciation with Martire goes Hayford back even further. Martire was CEO and Hayford was president of Metavante Technologies Inc. when it was acquired by FIS in 2009, and both executives then joined FIS. “Frank and I have worked together since 2003. Together we have successfully built and grown Metavante and later built FIS into the global industry leader for financial technology,” Hayford said in an NCR conference call with analysts last week, adding he looked forward to working again with Martire. NCR, founded in 1884 as National Cash Register, now provides electronic financial transaction services.
