The First Amendment protects many of our nation’s core, fundamental rights: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people to peaceably assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”

A fundamental concept to understanding the Constitution and the Bill of Rights is that the federal government has no inherent power – but only the powers granted to it by We The People. A divine spark burns in each of us, waiting to ignite the light of wisdom and fulfillment. The spark will wither and die if we are denied the freedom to think and speak and express ourselves as our conscience dictates, unfettered by fear of government retaliation. This is not Birk my idea, nor is it a revolutionary idea today. Neither was it new to Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and George Washington in 1787 when they wrote the Constitution or in 1789 when James Madison wrote the Bill of Rights.
