Florida State College at Jacksonville chose John Avendano, president and CEO of Kankakee Community College in Illinois, as its next president. The college district board of trustees made the selection Wednesday. Avendano, 56, replaces interim President Kevin Hyde, who has served since the retirement of former FSCJ President Cynthia Bioteau in May. The selection caps an eight-month

national search through a 16-member presidential search committee, assisted by Washington, D.C.-based AGB Search, an affiliate of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges. Avendano has more than 30 years of community college experience and has served as president and CEO of Kankakee Community College since 2009. His educational background includes a bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology and a master’s degree in adult continuing education, both from Northern Illinois University.

Permit issued for Baptist emergency center The city issued construction permits for Baptist Health Properties Inc. to expand into Southwest Jacksonville with a free-standing 20-bed emergency center. The $23 million facility is scheduled to open in early 2020 at 9868 Family Place near Oakleaf Town Center at Argyle Forest Boulevard and Merchants Way. It will offer adult and pediatric emergency care. Perry-McCall Construction Inc. is the contractor for the project – a 19,826-square-foot building and a trash enclosure on 2 acres – at a construction job cost of $10 million, permits show.
