Main & Six Brewing Company plans an expansion that would bring another dining option to Springfield and the neighborhood’s first rooftop bar. Owner Dennis Espinosa said he and his mother, co-owner Cindy Lasky, want to renovate a 3,600-square-foot building next to the brewery and connect the two. That space will house a restaurant, kitchen, barrel aging room and restrooms. He will add a 2,000-squarefoot rooftop space above the

addition. The rooftop beer garden will be about 500 square feet. There also will be office space on the second floor. In addition, he will add a 100-square-foot outdoor patio and pave the adjacent lot for parking. The expansion will bring Main & Six’s total space to about 7,200 square feet at 1636 N. Main St. Espinosa said he will start construction after the city issues the building permits. Main & Six already has a cold-

Main & Six Brewing Company owner Dennis Espinosa said plans to expand his business have been in the works for two years and were delayed by the pandemic.

A Jacksonville Icemen hockey team affiliate completed the $6 million purchase of the Jacksonville Ice & Sportsplex on March 15 as a $7.5 million incentive package to aid the deal nears a final City Council vote. JICE LLC, managed by Icemen majority owner Andrew Kaufmann, bought the ice rink facility at 3605 Philips Highway from PSF I Jax Metro LLC, according to the Duval County Clerk of Courts. Records also show Kaufmann issued a $6.1 million mortgage to JICE LLC on March 15. Team President Bob Ohrablo said Feb. 8 that the Icemen organization intended to buy the team’s practice facility and install a second full-size ice rink, a sports-themed restaurant and facilities to support youth and adult hockey programs. A legislative summary filed with Council Ordinance 20210113 breaks down the $18 million project to $6.1 million for the property and business acquisition and $11.9 million for renovations. Council is considering Icemen corporate arm SZH Hockey LLC’s request for a $6.5 million, 20-year construction loan at 3% interest and a $1 million completion grant to help finance the rink revamp. The loan and economic development agreement would be with team subsidiary company Icemen Igloo LLC, city documents state. Icemen representatives and administration officials say the deal would provide colleges in SEE ICEMEN, PAGE 2

Best Buy closes its Regency store Best Buy in Regency is closed permanently, according to the store’s phone recording and a sign previously posted on the door. The store at 9355 Atlantic Blvd. near Regency Square Mall is the only location in Jacksonville to close, but joins others in Illinois, Virginia, New York and Massachusetts, Business Insider reported. A sign on the door previously said, “This location is closed… permanently. We do not know why. We do not know who is moving in.” Fixtures are for sale in the store, according to the sign. Best Buy operates four other Jacksonville stores.

the North Florida region a home rink, create inner-city hockey and education programs and attract youth and adult hockey and figure skating tournaments from throughout the Southeastern U.S. The Icemen would form partnerships with the city’s Parks and Recreation Department and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Florida to operate the hockey programs. The Council Finance Committee voted 7-0 on March 16 to advance the legislation and the full Council could take a final vote at its March 23 meeting. The bill was introduced Feb. 23 by Council President Tommy Hazouri on behalf of the mayor. Kaufmann purchased SZH Hockey in 2019 from Al Acquisitions. The team also has a locally based investors group that includes former NFL and University of Florida quarterback Tim Tebow and Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Myles Jack. The Sportsplex is part of San Marco East Plaza, which is west of Interstate 95

at Emerson Street. Ohrablo said the Icemen, the ECHL affiliate of the NHL Winnipeg Jets, has been pursuing the deal for nearly two years. The team uses the Sportsplex as a secondary practice facility when its home rink at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena is not available. Ohrablo said buying and renovating the 103,570-square-foot Sportsplex will give the Icemen a permanent practice rink and corporate headquarters. According to Ohrablo, SZH Hockey negotiated with former Sportsplex property owner, Dallas-based Prescott Group, and leaseholder Marc Scheff to acquire the facility and business for $6.1 million. The Prescott Group bought San Marco East Plaza, then called Metro Square, in 2019. The Icemen have contracted Hollywood-based The Campol Consulting Group LLC to help develop the facility, according to Ohrablo. The firm helped plan the Florida Panthers IceDen in Coral Springs. food restaurant license, which it obtained over the summer when breweries could reopen during the pandemic if they served food. Main & Six serves cold sandwiches and other snacks from 1748 Bakehouse in Springfield and has food trucks on-site. Espinosa said he will apply for a fullservice restaurant license to operate in the expanded space. While owners haven’t finalized a menu, Espinosa said they selected a chef who will help design it. It won’t be too similar to the existing restaurants in the neighborhood — Strings Sports Brewery and Crispy’s Springfield Gallery. “We don’t want to necessarily recreate the wheel and have identical or similar food,” he said. Adding a restaurant was not in the plan when Espinosa and Lasky opened the brewery in 2017. Espinosa said he saw the success of

Wicked Barley Brewing Company in Baymeadows as a brewpub-style operation. He also read several studies from the Independent Craft Brewers Association that said brewpubs typically perform better financially than breweries that don’t sell food. Springfield has a handful of food options, and with one at Main & Six, Espinosa said he hopes more people will be drawn to the neighborhood. “It was kind of a two-fold thing: Get more people there and also stay competitive with some of the neighborhood places,” Espinosa said. “We’re not losing out business to those that do have food, but they could stay a little longer with us rather than come for one or two beers.” Espinosa said the project has been in the works for about two years. The coronavirus pandemic delayed it but did not threaten to keep it from happening. “(There was) never a point where we thought it wouldn’t happen,” he said. “We were always wondering when.”
