Planners respond to new virus

With the first case of coronavirus diagnosed in Duval County as of March 13, cancellations, postponements and closings are becoming standard. Hospitality-related businesses are among those affected as events are canceled and travel to the region decreases. Mayor Lenny Curry announced March 13 that city venues, libraries, senior centers and other nonessential departments would close by the end of the day until further notice. That means events scheduled at city venues will be canceled or postponed. The Players Championship was canceled March 12 for the first time in the tournament’s history. It typically attracts about 200,000 visitors for the tournament. Organizers postponed the Generation W conference scheduled for April 3 at the University of

Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry ordered all city-sponsored events canceled and all city-owned event venues closed indefinitely in response to the growing spread of the new coronavirus. The list includes The Times-Union Center for Performing Arts, VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena, TIAA Bank Field, 121 Financial Ballpark and the Prime Osborn Convention Center.

Curry said the closures extend to city parks and libraries and the Jacksonville Zoo. During a March 13 news conference in the City Hall atrium, Curry said his unilateral steps are to slow the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, in Duval County. “I have a mission and job to do. We as city officials all have a mission and a job to do and that is to make sure the people and families of Duval County, Jacksonville, Florida are safe,” Curry said. “The way we’re going to do that is slow the spread of the coronavirus and, eventually, eradicate the spread,” he said. use online methods to file documents and pay bills when possible. “We strongly encourage businesses and organizations to take similar actions,” he said. “We’re not mandating any of this currently, but we want people to be cautious and thoughtful.” Curry did not declare an official state of emergency March 13, but the mayor said he could reconsider that position as the state of the coronavirus evolves. He said he is in contact with the Jacksonville Port Authority, Jacksonville Aviation Authority and JEA about their operations. In a March 12 tweet, Curry shared his frustration with the speed of information coming from the Florida Department of Health. He wrote he was disappointed his administration learned of the first positive case in Duval County from local media. The mayor’s news conference came less than 24 hours after the first case of the new virus was confirmed in Duval

Visit Jacksonville, the city’s tourism and marketing bureau, surveyed hotels and found most had group cancellations and postponements. Most also experienced a drop in leisure and business travel bookings, stemming from corporate bans on nonessential travel. Visit Jacksonville President and CEO Michael Corrigan said in a statement that a drop in business travel is expected for the next few months. The agency also isn’t advertising or promoting the city to tourists. A spokeswoman said Visit Jacksonville had no advertising planned for March or April since the organization was planning to run more ads later in the year. “We are working with state and national travel industry partners and will provide updates and insights when possible,” Corrigan said. “Local attractions, events and area hotels are assessing the situation for the next few months as we all follow the recommendations from health and city leaders.” Florida Theatre President Numa Saisselin said the historic Downtown venue postponed all shows from March 13 through April 5. He hopes to reschedule as many events as possible. Saisselin said it’s typical for the theater

Because of the federal HIPAA law, Powers did not release the name of the facility during the news briefing. The patient is being treated at Memorial Hospital, according to Daily Record news partner News4Jax.com. Five first responders who were dispatched to the facility have been quarantined. Curry said the responders were not aware the patient was infected with the virus and were not wearing the proper protective gear to prevent infection from exposure when they arrived. City Council President Scott Wilson said he will coordinate with the administration before deciding whether to hold scheduled Council committee and board meetings over the next two weeks. She said the company was working on three trade show booths and all were canceled. “Our phones are completely dead right now,” she said. “No one is calling.” In The Rail Yard District near Downtown, wedding bookings at The Glass Factory haven’t been affected as of midday March 13, said Business Manager Lauryn Howell. A wedding was planned for this weekend. Howell said she would rebook clients who decide to reschedule, but none have canceled because of the virus as of March 13. “We’re carrying on with business as usual,” Howell said. “The more people who do that, the less impact we’ll see across every sector of business.
