City project will reshape Five Points intersection
A $4 million project that will move traffic beacon, turn Lomax Street into a one-way has some business owners concerned.
By David Cawton Staff Writer Some business owners in the Five Points neighborhood are nervously anticipating a pending road project that would turn Lomax Street into a one-way street, widen sidewalks and create a more pedestrian-friendly experience in the popular Riverside shopping, dining and entertainment district. After years in development, the $4 million project that will give the Five Points
five-way traffic intersection a makeover should begin later this year. It’s part of Mayor Lenny Curry’s fiveyear Capital Improvement Program adopted in September. The most notable change would be the conversion of Lomax into an eastbound, one-way street between the five-way intersection and Oak Street, with angled parking in exchange for two-way traffic. Hyatt Regency Jacksonville still working on renovations Pending permit shows the Downtown hotel is adding grab-and-go market along with restaurant private dining.
Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront guests still don’t know when the first-floor lobby and restaurant will reopen, but a pending permit shows a significant renovation to the groundlevel food options. Just as previous plans indicated before hurricane flooding and a sale, the Downtown hotel intends to add a grab-and-go market on the side of the restaurant nearest the elevators and registration desk.
Architect Jonathan Nehmer + Associates Inc. designed the project, shown as a $500,000 renovation of the first-floor restaurant and market. The 5,600-square-foot project is called Phase 3 of renovations to the hotel, which was affected by flooding by Hurricane Irma in September and a sale of the property in August.
