Authority. Williams worked with Moody in the 1990s when Moody was part of Broom, Moody, Johnson & Grainger. Williams returned to work with Moody in 2018 at Moody Appraisal Group. In addition to becoming Moody Williams Appraisal Group, the company also moved office spaces. It previously occupied about 2,000 square feet on the ground floor at 1300 Riverplace Blvd. Last month, it moved to about 4,000 square feet on the sixth floor. Moody said he likes the office’s location and its proximity to Downtown.
The Downtown Investment Authority continues to support setting up a naval warship museum in Jacksonville. The DIA board unanimously approved a resolution Jan. 15 to enter a one-year development agreement with the Jacksonville Historic Naval Ship Association Inc. The association would relocate the USS Orleck DD-886 to Pier No. 1 at the Shipyards near TIAA Bank Field. If the nonprofit meets the terms, the resolution gives DIA staff the authority to negotiate a 10-year licensing agreement to dock the warship in the St. Johns River with two five-year renewal options. That could make the Orleck a Downtown attraction for 20 years. The USS Orleck has been a working museum in Lake Charles, Louisiana, for the past 10 years. It is named after Lt. Joe Orleck and launched May 12, 1945. Its primary service during the Vietnam War was in the 7th Fleet in the Pacific. This is the second time JHNSA has tried to bring a warship Downtown. JHNSA spent years trying to bring the 437-foot USS Charles F. Adams to Jacksonville. It secured $2.8 million through donations, private capital, bank loans and

Ron Moody and Mark Williams open Moody Williams Appraisal Group, a “one-stop shop” for real estate appraisals. BY KATIE GARWOOD STAFF WRITER
Five years after starting Moody Appraisal Group, Ron Moody and Mark Williams have created a “one-stop shop” for real estate appraisals. As of Jan. 1, Moody Appraisal Group became Moody Williams Appraisal
Group. The purpose is to provide the full spectrum of real estate appraisal services. “We combined two well-known appraisal professionals to form an even larger, stronger appraisal group,” said Moody, chief executive officer. “I like to think of us as a full-service real estate appraisal company.” Moody’s specialties are in litigation support, eminent domain appraisals, bank work for mortgages and appraisals for divorces, estates and partnerships. Williams, the company’s president, has expertise in bank work, marinas and large retail or multitenant properties. Moody has 47 years of appraisal experience and Williams has 36. A spokeswoman said the deal is a sale-leaseback. The property long was known as the Canada Dry Bottling Co. plant operated by Southeast-Atlantic Beverage Corp. It was recognized for its large water tank painted as a 7UP can. In 2016, the city issued a demolition permit for the tank and its foundation. state grants to refurbish the ship and move it Downtown. The U.S. Navy decided not to donate the Adams and instead salvage the ship. The deal provides the nonprofit no city money, but the development agreement needs approval from City Council. The proposed ticket-taking facility that will be the museum’s entrance also has to receive design approval from the Downtown Development Review Board. JHNSA President Daniel Bean said Jan. 15 that the best-case scenario would have the USS Orleck docked in Jacksonville by late April. Bean said it could be later pending city approvals and a six- to eight-week drydock inspection period in Port Arthur, Texas. DIA Contract and Regulatory Com-
pliance Manager John Crescimbeni said that to protect the city from unforeseen expenses, the nonprofit will have to escrow 110% of the cost to tow the Orleck from the Shipyards to a naval scrapyard in Brownsville, Texas, should the ship become structurally damaged or the nonprofit fails financially. The deal requires JHNSA to reevaluate the cost to tow the ship every five years. According to the nonprofit’s latest estimate, it would cost $243,500 to tow the Orleck to Texas from Jacksonville. The DIA has to give the nonprofit a 90-day notice should it decide to terminate the licensing agreement. Bean said the museum’s hours likely will be 10 a.m to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. “We located down here on purpose and that’s really to be a part of the Downtown revitalization,” Moody said. “We’ve been watching it happen.” Moody Williams employs about 15 people, Moody said. He said he’d consider adding a few more, but would do so slowly. The total would likely not exceed 20 people. “At that point when you get too big, it’s no fun to manage,” he said.
Moody, 68, and Williams, 58, said they believe in helping younger appraisers grow in the field and develop their skills. It’s their goal that eventually, the two will turn the company over to some of the younger associates in the company. “One last ride, 10 more years and then hand it over,” Williams said. “We’ve had some really, really good and talented young kids and we want to establish that legacy for ourselves and for them to hopefully grow into.” KGARWOOD@ JAXDAILYRECORD.COM (904) 356-2466

Made In Space establishes headquarters in Jacksonville The company was the first to manufacture hardware far above the Earth’s surface. BY KATIE GARWOOD STAFF WRITER
Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Jan. 17 that Made In Space will relocate its corporate headquarters from Silicon Valley to Jacksonville. Made In Space develops space manufacturing technology and was the first company to manufacture hardware outside of Earth. It has operated in Jacksonville since 2015 at 8226 Philips Highway in the Baymeadows Business Center. Frank DiBello, president and CEO of Space Florida; Mike Snyder, Made In Space chief engineer; and Austin Jordan, Made In Space communications manager, along with Made In Space President and CEO Andrew Rush were present at the announcement at the Made In Space offices. DeSantis said with the move, Made In Space will invest more than $3 million into the new facility. “This really is the foundation of which we’re going to build and continue to build the transformational future of space,” said Rush. Part of the reason to relocate is Jacksonville’s proximity to Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Center, joining other aerospace companies that have relocated some operations to Florida. Those include Boeing and Lockheed Martin. Made In Space was founded in 2010 in Mountain View, California. The city approved a permit Oct. 4 for the company to expand into 18,207 square feet of space at a cost of almost $550,000. Before that expansion, it operated in 19,381 square feet, bringing its total footprint to 37,000 square feet in Jacksonville. “I’m proud of what we offer in Florida. I think we take pride in having a positive business climate,” DeSantis said. “We want companies like this to succeed because we think that’s more opportunities for the citizens of Florida.” Made In Space also will add jobs in Jacksonville. Rush said the company already has hired 50 employees, and expects to hire more. The Jacksonville facility can employ 150 employees, he said. There are more than 70 currently in Jacksonville. “By expanding our presence here in Florida, we expect to capitalize on the value offered by Florida’s business climate and its position as a world leader in aerospace research and investment,” Rush said. The 16 current Jacksonville job postings include “spacecraft lead” with at

least eight years of experience “participating in breakthrough manufacturing technologies for space and terrestrial spin-offs.” In August, Made In Space listed 17 job openings in Jacksonville, including business development for in-space manufacturing and assembly and for spaceenabled materials. Jobs included engineers, a project manager and a human resources manager. In July, Made In Space received a $73 million NASA contract to demonstrate Archinaut, the company’s autonomous robotic manufacturing and assembly platform, on a flight mission. “The difference between now and when the space program was big during the Cold War is the amount of private sector involvement. It’s just incredible,” DeSantis said. “I think Made In Space is just an example of that.” The corporate headquarters relocation to Jacksonville is a homecoming for Rush, who received his bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of North Florida.
