A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT

I

learned early in my career that you can have all the visions, plans, initiatives and programs in the world, but without people, none of it comes to life.

A mentor of mine used to say, "If it's meant to be, it's up to me." That phrase has stuck with me. It speaks to both the power of an individual and the responsibility each of us carries as leaders within our organizations and communities.

Much of today's conversation centers on "culture." While culture certainly includes benefits, professional development and flexibility, at its core it is about how people are treated and whether they find fulfillment in where they live and work. The real differentiator is not perks, but people: their dedication, their courage and their commitment to one another.

When I think about our region, some of our greatest successes prove this truth.

Projects like the FM Area Diversion, development projects across all our cities, or Innovate28, did not happen because of a single idea or leader. They became reality because people came together, trusted one another and chose to act with courage. I often think about the phrase, "people chose bravery over perfection."

That courageous spirit is contagious when you are in an environment of trust and respect, and it is what turns "what if" into "what's next."

But the power of people is not only visible in large-scale projects. It shows up in everyday moments too. Think about companies that have chosen to put people before profits. As an example, you’ll read about several Chamber members with employee ownership models and other innovative programs, showcasing that when people feel invested in, when they know they matter, the results can be extraordinary.

As I reflect on my mentor's words, I challenge myself daily to invest in someone else, whether that means offering a listening ear, creating an opportunity for growth or simply encouraging a colleague. Some of the most transformative ideas I have seen have come not from boardroom strategy sessions but from the people around me who felt empowered to speak up and share their vision.

The stories you'll read in this magazine demonstrate exactly this principle. Each showcases how investing in people creates the kind of ripple effects that strengthen our entire region and build the foundation for lasting success.

The growth and vibrancy of our region ultimately come down to this: people working hard, choosing collaboration over ego and investing in one another's success. That is the real power of employees. As you read these stories, I challenge you to ask yourself: How are you investing in the people around you? How are you creating an environment where that courageous spirit can thrive?

That is the story we should celebrate, because it is what sets our region apart.

Inside the

NORTH DAKOTA LEGISLATURE What businesses need to know from the 2025 session

T

he Chamber recently gathered business and community leaders to hear insights from six Cass County legislators: Rep. Steve Swiontek (District 10), Rep. Brandy Pyle (District 22), Sen. Kristin Roers (District 27), Rep. Greg Stemen (District 27), Sen. Josh Boschee (District 44) and Sen. Ron Sorvaag (District 45). They outlined the major outcomes of the session and what those decisions mean for North Dakota’s business climate and economic future.

Whether you're running a business, managing a city budget or addressing workforce challenges, here’s a clear breakdown of what happened and why it matters.

STATE BUDGET SNAPSHOT: WHAT’S BEING FUNDED AND WHY IT MATTERS North Dakota passed an approximately $20 Billion budget for the 2026-2027 biennium, which is a 3.5 percent increase from the previous budget cycle.

WHY THAT’S IMPORTANT: • Budget relies heavily on oil revenue, so future stability depends on market prices.

• About $5.4 Billion of that is going straight to local entities like schools, counties, cities and townships for local projects, services and infrastructure.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: • Ask local leaders what this means for your community.

• Share your business’s priorities with legislators during the interim period.

PROPERTY TAX RELIEF AND LOCAL BUDGET LIMITS HB 1176 passed, providing up to $1,600 in a primary resident tax credit for homeowners. At the same time, political subdivisions like counties, cities, school districts and park districts will now be capped at a 3 percent increase per year on local property tax rates.

If they don’t utilize the full 3 percent increase, they can carry over the remaining percentage into any of their budgets over the next five years. Additionally, voters can also choose to remove the limit for four years. That would let the local government raise taxes above the 3 percent cap during that time.

WHAT THIS COULD MEAN: • Tax relief for homeowners.

• Budget challenges for local governments.

BE ON THE LOOKOUT: • Recommended adjustments may be proposed by the interim Tax Reform and Relief Advisory Committee.

HOW YOU CAN ENGAGE: • Attend public budget discussions.

• Share your feedback with local and state leaders.

HOUSING AND HOMELESSNESS CONVERSATIONS

WORKFORCE AND CHILD CARE SOLUTIONS IN PROGRESS North Dakota has more than 20,000 job openings. Lawmakers responded with continued support for: • Operation Intern.

• Technical Skills Training Grants.

• Regional Workforce Impact Program.

• Career Academies for students.

They also introduced a new employer tax credit to support child care. This incentive is designed to ease the burden of child care costs by encouraging businesses to contribute to the availability and affordability of care for their workforce. By offsetting expenses, the credit aims to make it more feasible for parents to enter or remain in the workforce.

Legislators emphasized that workforce remains a top priority for the state. While key programs are funded and active, their success will rely heavily on strong public-private partnerships, local engagement and consistent accountability to ensure they meet employer needs.

Housing was a major theme this session, with legislators putting dollars toward: • Housing Incentive Fund ($25 Million).

• Homelessness grants ($10 Million).

Also proposed this session was funding for a Diversion and Deflection Center in Fargo, to provide homeless individuals with access to resources and services to help them get into stable living environments. Although the center did not receive funding this session, discussions around addressing homelessness across the state will continue.

• Support local initiatives and programs focused on housing such as the FM Coalition to End Homelessness, United Way, the Fargo Homeless Shelter and more.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR NORTH DAKOTA AND THE CHAMBER?

• $205 million for the Red River Valley Water Supply Project to develop a reliable supply of water to Central and Eastern North Dakota.

The legislative session shaped the framework, but much of the real work will happen between now and 2027.

• $45 million toward Hector International Airport expansion to support growth in travel and logistics capacity.

NEXT-PHASE FOCUS AREAS:

• Funding for the development of a natural gas pipeline from western to eastern North Dakota, aimed to encourage continued oil production and economic development.

MINNESOTA LEGISLATURE

What businesses need to know from the 2025 session

M

innesota’s 2025 legislative session is in the books. But this one didn’t follow the usual playbook. A tied House, special elections and power-sharing agreements made for an unpredictable few months in St. Paul. Still, lawmakers passed a $66 billion state budget and debated major issues, from business mandates and permitting to housing, taxes and workforce.

The Chamber convened four regional legislators at the recent Minnesota Legislative Wrap-Up event to break it down: Sen. Mark Johnson, Sen. Rob Kupec, Rep. Steve Gander and Rep. Jim Joy. Here’s what passed, what stalled and what it all means for your business and community.

BUDGET SNAPSHOT: A BALANCING ACT Lawmakers approved a $66 billion budget for the next biennium, which is an 8% decrease from the previous cycle. While key services were preserved, the reduction comes amid projections of a $6 billion shortfall in the 2028–2029 fiscal years.

WHY IT MATTERS: • Budget discussions reduced state spending while avoiding major cost shifts to local governments and increasing taxes on businesses and individuals.

• Maintaining state services or programs may become more difficult if budget deficits persist.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: • Monitor state and county-level funding changes that may affect your operations.

PAID LEAVE AND EMPLOYER MANDATES: PREPARE FOR 2026 Minnesota’s Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) program is set to launch in January 2026, but many raise concerns about implementation, administrative burdens and the cost to run the program. Minnesota’s Earned Sick and Safe Time (ESST) mandate continues to create compliance requirements for employers, adding another layer of complexity to workplace management.

BUSINESS CLIMATE: TAXES, INCENTIVES AND WHAT STALLED Tax debates ranged from a fifth income tax tier to sales tax changes, social media taxes and local aid reductions. The final package included both cuts and expansions.

Notably, lawmakers increased the cannabis tax, expanded the Research and Development (R&D) credit and approved new sales tax remittance requirements for businesses with large tax liabilities beginning in 2027.

• PFML’s maximum payroll cap was reduced from 1.2% to 1.1% (the current rate is 0.88%). and will be funded by a payroll tax split between employers and employees (cap lowered to 1.1%).

• New sales tax remittance rules for high-liability vendors (effective 2027).

• Cannabis tax rate increased to 15%.

• Border Cities Enterprise Zone program expansion stalled but remains a 2026 priority.

• Lawmakers expect adjustments after the PFML Jan. 1, 2026 launch.

• Moorhead’s Downtown Tax Increment Financing District extended.

• Moderate adjustments made to ESST program.

PERMITTING, INFRASTRUCTURE AND BONDING Minnesota passed a $700 million bonding bill to fund public infrastructure needs and passed a separate bill aimed at streamlining environmental permitting.

HOW TO ENGAGE:

• Local infrastructure projects such as water and wastewater treatment projects, flood protection, local and state facilities, and roads depend on bonding funds.

• Monitor infrastructure discussions tied to your sector.

• Support permitting improvements that enable responsible growth.

• Permitting reforms may help speed up economic development, though further changes may be needed.

• Moorhead and Clay County still seek $60 million for FM Area Diversion flood mitigation; the state included $9 million in statewide flood funding this session, which could help.

Child care, housing and workforce shortages remained central topics. Lawmakers also passed a jobs and labor budget bill with workforce investments and policy updates.

The session built a foundation for bipartisanship, but big questions remain around business mandates, critical infrastructure needs, regulatory and tax competitiveness, and workforce shortages.

IN HOUSING:

The Chamber is committed to advancing policies that support business growth, protect competitiveness and strengthen our regional economy.

• Statewide zoning standards were discussed but delayed over local control concerns.

• Communities adopting zoning/housing incentives will qualify for new support.

IN WORKFORCE AND CHILD CARE: • Overregulation remains a barrier to child care access.

• Bipartisan support continues for early education and workforce investments.

HOW BUSINESSES CAN HELP: • Collaborate with local workforce, housing and child care initiatives.

• Share hiring and retention insights with policymakers.

• Leverage state programs and grants where possible.

NEXT-PHASE PRIORITIES FOR THE CHAMBER: • Preparing for PFML implementation.

• Revisiting policies to incentivize housing development.

• Reform existing burdensome business mandates • Continue to analyze permitting processes to spur additional economic development .

• Securing funding for regional flood mitigation and regional infrastructure projects.

• Continuing advocacy for policies and programs that expand border city competitiveness.

T

he 2025 Midwest Technology Summit brought together leaders from across the Midwest to examine how artificial intelligence and data infrastructure are rapidly reshaping business, workforce, and regional development.

Hosted by The Chamber on August 14, the event drew executives, policymakers and innovators who share a common urgency to move beyond theory and confront the real-world opportunities and risks of today’s technology.

From AI implementation and cybersecurity challenges to the surging growth of data centers, sessions highlighted both the promise and complexity that come with these significant shifts. Attendees heard from national and regional experts representing sectors like healthcare, retail, energy, agriculture and technology.

The conversations shared a central theme: organizations, businesses and leaders can no longer afford to react passively to disruption. They must anticipate change, invest in infrastructure and embrace AI-driven strategies that will define competitiveness in the years ahead.

WHY THE MIDWEST IS POISED TO POWER THE FUTURE OF DATA CENTERS The demand for data continues to grow at an unprecedented pace, fueled by artificial intelligence, cloud computing, e-commerce and streaming.

Meeting this demand requires reliable, cost-effective and sustainable infrastructure. While the coasts have historically dominated the data center market, the Midwest is emerging as a serious leader.

At the Midwest Technology Summit, experts pointed out that the region offers a rare mix of advantages: affordable and abundant power, a growing renewable energy sector, a central geographic location, a stable climate that lowers cooling costs and a workforce that | 16 |

is both skilled and adaptable. Together, these factors position the Midwest as one of the most attractive environments in the country for data center investment.

The impact of these projects extends far beyond technology itself. Data centers bring high-quality jobs ranging from construction and trades to IT and long-term maintenance. They strengthen tax bases, stimulate infrastructure investment and attract other tech-driven businesses. For rural communities in particular, a single facility can become a powerful anchor for broader economic growth.

As demand for data accelerates globally, the Midwest is increasingly being recognized as a hub for digital infrastructure. The question is no longer whether the region can compete, but how quickly it will seize the opportunity to lead.

LOOKING AHEAD With demand for data showing no signs of slowing, the Midwest is positioned to become a national leader in digital infrastructure. Each new facility not only supports innovation in AI and cloud computing but also drives lasting economic impact in the communities where it takes root.

AI ADOPTION IN BUSINESS: OPPORTUNITIES, RISKS AND REALITIES At the Midwest Technology Summit, one takeaway rang clear: AI is transforming business, but its real impact depends on how leaders balance speed, security, human judgment and workforce growth.

AI’s promise lies in freeing teams from repetitive tasks, analyzing data instantly, and creating space for higher-value work. Yet adopting it successfully is not simply about choosing the right software. It requires a culture of agility, curiosity and responsibility.

Leaders emphasized that starting small can spark momentum. Automating routine workflows proves the value quickly, while giving teams confidence to scale AI into more complex areas. But strategies cannot remain static. With the pace of AI advancement, long-term roadmaps risk becoming outdated in months. Business strategies now need to be flexible, reviewed often, and built around rapid cycles of testing and iteration.

Still, technology alone does not guarantee success.

AI can generate results in seconds, but it cannot decide whether those results are relevant, ethical, or aligned with a company’s goals. Human judgment remains the compass. Teams that pair curiosity with critical thinking, asking questions, testing assumptions and comparing outputs with other perspectives, consistently reach stronger outcomes than any algorithm on its own.

At the same time, AI heightens the importance of cybersecurity. Every tool depends on data, and with that comes risk. Businesses need visibility into what software and information employees are using, clear boundaries for sensitive data and the ability to recover quickly if threats occur. Strong protections do not slow innovation; they enable it by giving companies the confidence to experiment safely.

Perhaps the most important dimension is the workforce. AI is not replacing people; it is reshaping roles.

When routine tasks shift to machines, employees can step into work that requires creativity, problem solving and collaboration. That shift creates new opportunities but also new responsibilities for leaders: investing in upskilling, career development, and building cultures where people adapt alongside technology. Companies that take this seriously will unlock both productivity and loyalty, while those that do not risk falling behind.

Taken together, these insights show that AI adoption is about more than efficiency. It is about leaders who can balance opportunity with responsibility, automation with human growth, and speed with security. Organizations that do this will keep pace with AI, and will lead with it.

ulie Fedorchak, Congresswoman and former North Dakota Public Service Commissioner, addressed The Chamber’s Midwest Technology Summit attendees on the intersection of energy, policy and artificial intelligence (AI), and why North Dakota is uniquely positioned to lead in this transformation. Drawing on 12 years of experience being deeply entrenched in energy policy, she highlighted the complexity of America’s energy systems and the policies that guide them.

She noted that North Dakota’s resources are increasingly recognized at the national level, citing recent discussions with U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright, who called North Dakota one of the bestgoverned states with extraordinary energy potential.

Fedorchak emphasized that the growth of AI hinges on large-scale, reliable energy to fuel its possibilities.

“AI is transforming everything: manufacturing, health care, national defense, agriculture,” she said. “But in order to make AI possible, and to really reach its full potential, we must have the power to fuel it.”

She concluded by tying the opportunity back to North Dakota: its abundant energy resources can not only power AI development, but also position the state as a hub for this industry. “This technology is going to land somewhere,” she said. “Making sure that those models are developed in a country with the laws, standards and ideals that America has is vitally important for the future of this technology, and for the future of everything that we’re doing.”

She described the ways her own office already leverages AI, from proofreading and workflow efficiencies to policy scans. She also shared realworld examples of AI’s positive impacts: • MEDICINE: catching cancers earlier, alerting doctors to strokes within minutes and identifying infections like sepsis before symptoms peak.

• PUBLIC SAFETY: wildfire detection, earthquake damage modeling and disaster response routing.

• ACCESSIBILITY: speech-to-text for the deaf and reading assistants for the visually impaired.

Fedorchak then outlined AI’s darker risks, from deepfakes and radicalized information loops to mass surveillance, behavior nudging and fraud. She warned of the dangers of AI in the hands of malicious actors, including terrorist groups and oppressive governments. “AI is a force multiplier. It can scale persuasion, deception and control to levels human beings have never managed before,” she cautioned.

The congresswoman stressed that U.S. leadership is essential. “Who do we want leading and developing this technology? Would we rather have this in the hands of governments who believe in freedom, capitalism and individual rights, or in the hands of tyrants who want control, who want to manipulate, and who want to brainwash their people?”

Tammy Miller's Mission to Transform American Business

Picture this: You wake up each morning knowing that the company you work for doesn't just employ you. You own it. Every decision you make, every customer you serve, every efficiency you create doesn't just benefit some distant shareholder. It builds your wealth, secures your future and strengthens your community. You have a real stake in the game.

For most American workers, this remains a distant dream. But for Tammy Miller and the 3,500 employee-owners at Border States, it's been reality for decades.

Miller spent 29 years at the Fargo-based electrical distributor, rising through the ranks to become CEO and Board Chair from 2006 to 2020. During her tenure, she didn't just lead a company. She orchestrated one of the most compelling success stories in employee ownership, transforming Border States from a $485 million operation into a $2.5 billion powerhouse while creating extraordinary wealth for workers at every level.

Today, after serving as North Dakota's 39th Lieutenant Governor, Miller has made expanding employee ownership her mission. And she believes the time has never been more urgent.

The American dream, redefined "Only 8% of the private-sector workforce participates in Employee Stock Ownership Plans also known as ESOPs," Miller notes, citing statistics from the ESOP Association. "That means only 10.8 million workers participate in ESOPs and nearly 160 million more could benefit from this model."

The numbers tell a stark story about economic opportunity in America. While traditional benefits erode and wealth gaps widen, Employee Stock Ownership Plans offer a different path. It's one where workers build significant wealth simply by caring for the company they own, and doing great work.

At Border States, this isn't theoretical. During Miller's 14 years as CEO, employee-owners accumulated significant wealth in their ESOP accounts – allowing for retirement security they never dreamed of – including hundreds of employee-owners with over a million dollars in their ESOP account. One employee who spent his entire career working in a branch service role (never making six figures) retired with over $2 million in his ESOP account. Truck drivers, warehouse associates and outside sales representatives all enjoyed wealth they never imagined possible.

The contrast became painfully personal for Miller when her younger sister passed away after a battle with cancer.

Her sister had worked 29 years as a legal secretary for an organization with a defined benefit pension. Because she hadn't retired and had no surviving spouse or minor children, her beneficiaries received only what she had personally contributed to the plan: just under $100,000.

"If she would have been in the Border States ESOP for her 29-year career, contributing zero of her own money, her two young adult sons would have inherited nearly $3.4 million," Miller reflects. The difference is staggering: company contributions that averaged 13% annually, combined with stock value growth averaging 17%, versus a traditional pension's limited survivor benefits.

Building the culture of ownership Border States' transformation didn't happen by accident. When tax laws changed in 1998, Miller helped convince the board to convert to an S-corporation and become 100% ESOP-owned. But the real work was building what she calls an "ownership culture" founded on four pillars: transparency, education, empowerment and accountability.

"Border States is extremely transparent, sharing all information except what was tied to nondisclosure or confidentiality agreements and individual compensation," Miller explains. "The strategic plan was regularly communicated to employee-owners, and they had clear line of sight to how their role supported that plan."

This transparency extended to monthly videos viewed at local branch meetings, where overall company and business unit results were discussed alongside progress on strategic initiatives and financial education. Employeeowners weren't just told they were owners. They were given the information and empowered to act like it.

The results speak volumes. During Miller's leadership, Border States' stock value grew from $161 per share to over $1,800, averaging more than 20% annual growth. The company consistently outperformed industry benchmarks in productivity, profitability and customer satisfaction.

The trifecta impact Miller describes employee ownership's impact in three dimensions that reinforce each other: wealth creation, business performance and community engagement.

Wealth Creation happens automatically for employeeowners who contribute nothing of their own money yet build substantial retirement security through company contributions and stock appreciation.

Unlike traditional 401(k) plans that require employee contributions, ESOPs are funded entirely by the company and tied directly to business success.

Business Performance improves because engaged employees who own the company are simply more productive. "Customers said it was hard to describe employee ownership, but they could see it and feel it," Miller recalls. "They would frequently say, 'We can't describe the difference, but we wish we could bottle it and take it back to our facilities.'"

That "secret sauce" of ownership pride and responsible behavior led to strong customer retention and made Border States an attractive succession option for retiring business owners who wanted to keep their companies locally and Americanowned while taking care of their employees.

Community Engagement flows naturally from the ownership mindset. Border States offers employeeowners 16 hours of paid volunteer time annually and established the Border States Foundation as part of their commitment to giving back. Employee-owners make a difference at many nonprofits and understand that their success creates responsibilities to their communities.

The challenge ahead

Despite these proven benefits, Miller sees significant barriers preventing widespread adoption of employee ownership: lack of awareness, complexity of setup and implementation costs.

Her solution is ambitious but practical.

Miller's goal is impressive: double the number of employee owners in the next five years. It's a challenge that requires action from business leaders, policymakers, educators, and communities across the region and nation.

"We need a robust Office of Employee Ownership in every state and at the federal level," she argues.

"These should be one-stop shops that provide connections and incentives for turnkey solutions: legal, valuation, accounting, communication strategy, administration and more."

Miller draws on her experience helping utilities and construction customers with turnkey solutions at Border States. "It was much easier and cost-effective for customers to turn over a project to a trusted advisor than try to round up the resources and do it themselves. How can we create a turnkey model for employee ownership?"

She also advocates for embedding employee ownership in university entrepreneurship curricula and establishing internships specifically at employee-owned companies. "Many students don't know about employeeowned companies," she notes. "Border States has many interns every year. They don't know about employee ownership when they start, but once they experience the culture through their internship, they don't want to leave."

"We know employee-owned companies are more successful and resilient," she says. "They create wealth for all employee owners and give back to their communities. We need to make this option more accessible and easier for business owners who are busy running their businesses and aren't ESOP experts."

The opportunity is particularly relevant as the "silver tsunami" of retiring baby boomer business owners creates an unprecedented number of succession opportunities. Employee ownership offers an alternative to selling to private equity, an out of state or foreign company, or closing operations. It keeps businesses local, American-owned and beneficial to entire workforces rather than just executives.

Living the dream For Miller, this isn't just about business models or economic theory. It's about giving every employee the opportunity to experience what she calls "the American dream:" working for a company you own and sharing in the wealth you help create.

"Knowing you have a stake in the game. Knowing you are empowered with transparent information, clear levels of authority and frequent education. Knowing you are responsible to take care of customers, fellow employee-owners and your community. And knowing you are rewarded for your good work with wealth creation and bonuses based on results."

This vision extends beyond individual success to community transformation. When thousands of workers build significant wealth through ownership rather than hoping for modest returns from distant investments, entire regions benefit from increased spending power, civic engagement and local business development.

Miller's call to action is direct: "Share the stories, create incentives and provide support so more employees can live the American dream."

The question isn't whether employee ownership works. Border States and thousands of other ESOP companies have proven that decisively. The question is whether we'll build the infrastructure and awareness needed to make this opportunity available to the millions of American workers who could benefit from it.

As Miller puts it: "Let's give every employee the opportunity to work for the company they own and share in the wealth they helped create."

The dream is real. The path is proven. The only thing missing is the will to scale it.

After two decades of this dedicated work, we submitted our Magnet application in August 2024, with more than 4,000 pages outlining our efforts.

In recognition of the strength of our submission, we were advanced directly to the site visit stage, a distinction achieved by less than 10% of applicants.

In February 2025, we welcomed ANCC appraisers for the visit, where they met with 87 of our departments to validate our application and confirm the culture of excellence we had built. Two months later, we were notified of our official designation, which applies to our hospitals and clinics in the Fargo metro area and served as a truly unforgettable moment for our teams. With this achievement, we proudly joined Sanford Bismarck as one of just two Magnetdesignated organizations in North Dakota.

At Light, we’re big believers in expanding our networks, both as an organization and as individual contributors. You never know who you might meet or what opportunities could come from a single connection.

YPN is a great way for our team to build relationships that benefit them personally and professionally, while also strengthening Light’s presence in the community.

Over time, what changes have you noticed in employees who have participated?

Team members who actively participate in YPN tend to grow their confidence right alongside their network.

So much of business is not about having all the answers yourself, but about knowing who to call when you need them. YPN helps our people build those connections, which is a huge value add both for them and for Light.

How has your company benefited from supporting this kind of involvement?

One of Light’s differentiators is what we call calm confidence. You build that by gaining competence and by getting reps outside your comfort zone. YPN gives our team members both; exposure to highly competent people as well as opportunities to stretch themselves in ways that build lasting confidence.

In what ways has the program impacted your workplace culture?

A confident employee doesn’t need to be micromanaged, and they tend to thrive with autonomy.

That’s a big reason we are able to accomplish so much as a team. When our people are confident in who they are, whose they are and what they know, it speeds up the game of business and allows us to operate at a higher level. YPN helps build that kind of confidence.

How do you identify or encourage team members who would be a good fit for YPN? During our annual development plan reviews, we talk about areas for personal and professional growth.

If a team member’s goals align with what YPN offers, it’s an easy yes. And with Drew specifically, we’ve seen proven results from that involvement, which makes it even easier to encourage others to get involved.

What’s one memorable success story you have seen from a participant?

Drew was involved in YPN for about a year I think before stepping into an officer role and leading the Marketing Committee. The confidence she gained from that experience helped set her up for success in leading our organization and serving as Board President for GiGi’s Playhouse just a few years later.

It’s a great example of how YPN can build leadership skills that carry over into every area of life.

Why do you believe it is important for businesses to continually develop their young professionals?

If you’re doing it right, your young professionals will have your job someday. Why would you not give them the tools they need to be ready for it? Supporting programs like YPN is an investment in their growth, and ultimately in the future of your business. If your team members are willing to show up, engage and invest in the experience, the value will be there for them and for your organization.

DREW'S YPN PERSPECTIVE AS AN EMPLOYEE What inspired you to join YPN? I was fresh out of college and in my first “real” job, so my professional network was pretty small. Even though I’ve lived in the FMWF area for most of my life, I hadn’t been a part of the business community before. YPN felt like the perfect way to change that; a chance for me to meet new people, build connections and get a front-row seat to all the opportunities our community has to offer.

Before getting involved, what were you hoping to gain from the experience?

I wanted to meet other young professionals who were at similar stages in their careers and life. As someone new to the business world, I was looking for people I could learn from, grow with and share connections with. Building a strong circle in the local business community was a big goal for me.

What’s one thing you have learned or experienced that you continue to use in your work today?

One thing that’s really stuck with me is that who you surround yourself with matters a lot. It sounds cliché, but it’s so true. Building meaningful relationships takes effort, and the payoff is huge. In our community (and in my company), word of mouth is everything. When you show up, be genuine and invest in your network, you create opportunities that last way beyond the initial conversation.

How has being involved in YPN impacted your confidence or approach to your career?

Most of us battle with imposter syndrome at some point, and maybe it never fully goes away. However, being involved in YPN, especially through the Leadership and Marketing Committees, helped me prove to myself I have what it takes. Even when you don’t have all the answers, there’s always a way to figure it out. Those roles gave me the confidence to use my voice, and I’ve carried that into my career at Light. Because of YPN, I approach my work with more influence, more ease in building relationships and a stronger ability to inspire others.

Have you taken on any new roles or responsibilities at work since becoming involved with YPN? My role has evolved a lot over the past few years.

I’ve grown into a leadership position where my voice is trusted within the team, and I manage several projects under Sarah West’s umbrella as both a project manager and a voice of reason. One thing is certain…I am never bored working at Light Consulting!

How has your employer supported you during your time in the program?

My employer, Sarah West, has always encouraged our team to be the best version of ourselves and is willing to help us do almost whatever it takes to get there. Sarah has also seen the positive impact it has had on me at work, so supporting my involvement was an easy yes for her.

If someone is considering joining, what advice would you give them?

Absolutely go for it. Show up, get involved and see what happens. Whether you’re looking for friends, mentors, a new job or just a reason to get out of the office once in a while, YPN has something for you. The more you put yourself out there, the more you get back and you might be surprised at how quickly it pays off.

Eventide’s leadership takes a proactive approach to listening to its employees. Each year, staff members participate in engagement surveys, and their feedback directly shapes new initiatives and workplace improvements. This commitment to responsiveness helps foster a culture where employees know their voices matter and where change is not just possible, it’s expected.

Professional growth is another cornerstone of Eventide’s success. The organization has implemented training programs designed to equip staff with the tools and confidence they need to excel. The New Nurse Training Program, for example, provides all newly hired RNs and LPNs with additional training in their first month of employment, laying a strong foundation for their future with the organization. Other opportunities include training for current team members throughout the year, ensuring that learning and growth are continuous.

Leadership development is equally important. Each year, Eventide’s Leadership Academy brings together every leader from across the organization for two days of collaboration, learning and relationship-building.

This event reinforces a shared vision and strengthens the bonds that make Eventide’s culture unique.

Eventide also plays an active role in developing the next generation of health care professionals, sponsoring CNA training, partnering with the Moorhead Career Academy for clinical experiences and working with local high schools to introduce students to careers in health care. These efforts ensure a steady pipeline of talent while inspiring young people to see the difference they can make in the lives of others.

For many employees, Eventide is more than a workplace—it is a place where careers grow and personal goals are achieved. Vice President of Clinical Services Sharilyn Althoff knows this firsthand. Since joining the team in 2016, she has advanced from Resident Care Manager to Director of Nursing to her current role, crediting Eventide’s commitment to professional development for much of her success. Through the organization’s Student Loan Reimbursement program, she was able to pay off her nursing school debt, and she continues to expand her skills through formal training, conferences and involvement in community organizations.

“Eventide fosters growth and development and goes above and beyond to invest in their employees,” she says.

“The team at Eventide is one of the many reasons I stay. No matter what department you work in, everyone works together to ensure resident care needs are met.”

For many employees, joining Eventide isn’t just about starting a new job, it’s about finding a place where they can truly make a difference. Tara Lee’s story is one of career growth and making a difference in the lives of residents and team members. She began her journey with Eventide Fargo in 2020, moving back to Fargo from Florida to be closer to her family. Encouraged by her daughter Kylie, who already worked in Eventide’s dietary department and spoke

highly of the positive, supportive environment, Tara decided to bring her own experience in skilled nursing care to the team. From day one, she embraced her role as a caregiver, finding deep fulfillment in forming meaningful relationships with residents and making their days brighter. “Being a caregiver is more than a job—it’s a calling,” Tara shares. “Eventide gives me the opportunity to do what I love every single day.”

Tara found that another way she shines as a caregiver is by sharing her love of cooking. She is now in charge of the restaurant at Eventide Fargo. “As Restaurant Coordinator, I have the opportunity to make the most of my combined previous work experience of food service, management and skilled care,” says Tara. “Not only do I get to offer residents healthy, tasty and fun food options, but I am still offering care by incorporating their favorite foods to bring back memories, providing healthy options and warming their hearts. I also have the opportunity to pass those rewarding feelings on to the employees who work for me by keeping them involved with the whole process. They don’t just cook or serve, they also help with input on menu options and other aspects of the restaurant. By keeping them involved, we are all rewarded by the appreciation of our residents every day.”

Meet the Center for Civic Engagement A bold new initiative by The Chamber The Chamber’s Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) is a bold new initiative that empowers employees, employers and community members to become more active in civic life. The Good Jobs Challenge (GJC) goal and target industries:

To enhance our regional workforce by helping over 900 individuals in Minnesota and North Dakota secure Good Jobs by Sept. 30, 2026, in the following industries: • Advanced manufacturing • Cybersecurity/information technology • Precision agriculture/food industries

The impact is real GJC Participant: Vivian Sehwah, CNH Industrial CNH utilized GJC to educate, train and recruit welders, in partnership with North Dakota State College of Science, a GJC education and training partner.

“I’ve worked in human services for many years, but I’ve been trying to do different things to provide a better life for my kids. I applied to CNH for an assembly position and a welder training position. I got a call for the welder training position, and I was super excited because I like to learn new things. I came for orientation, and I went to the training, and I liked it. I’m so grateful I did it, because I have a new career path and that will help me provide a better life for my kids.”

GJC Participant: Mason Hagerty, Perham High School student Perham High School utilized GJC to educate and train students in Commercial Driver's License (CDL) studies, in partnership with Minnesota State Community and Technical College, a GJC education and training partner.

Thanks to GJC, Mason earned his CDL while still in high school, setting himself up for a bright future in the transportation industry.

The GJC offers students and participants like Mason financial support to help them gain valuable skills and certifications, preparing them for in-demand careers even before earning their diploma. “I’m pretty proud about having [my CDL] before I graduate,” Mason said to The Perham Focus in an interview. “It’s a really great thing they are doing at the school.”
